Integrating Pottery with Comic Art: The Break Pot Project
00:00:40
Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about what I am currently doing to make my voice that I'm working on come to life. So you see, for a while now, I've had this idea in my head that I kind of want to create like almost a comic book with my with my pottery. I had this idea for a long time and I thought,
00:01:07
Speaker
that I was going to use what I learned in high school, which is called a break pot, which is basically break a pot and then you paint over it. And I was basically going to try to use that to make my my vision come to life. After a while, I learned that one, I don't really have a good amount of resources for that in order to kind of get started with that.
Challenges and Shifting Focus in Pottery Vision
00:01:32
Speaker
And then two, that was just going to be way harder is going to take a lot longer for me to find my voice because I don't have the necessary skills that I want to make that kind of vision come to life. You see, I'm not very good at painting.
00:01:49
Speaker
really anything or drawing really anything and it takes me forever to paint and draw so i had to figure out a way to make my vision kind of come to life while still being able to use my own strengths my own things my own resources that i have already so i started thinking a little bit on what can i do to kind of make this vision come to life
00:02:14
Speaker
And then I don't really know what kind of spurred it on, but I had this idea to just start sculpting characters onto like my pottery. And so I just kind of started doing that once I kind of had that idea. I have no idea where this idea came from. It's kind of like really just popped out out of nowhere.
00:02:36
Speaker
And I started doing that once I came up with the idea and I started practicing my sculpting comic book type characters onto my pottery. And I just started practicing and practicing. And now this is something that I enjoy doing because I started doing it now. But now this brings it to my point. So what am I going to do to make my voice come to life?
Developing Superhero Characters in Pottery
00:03:02
Speaker
because it has changed a little bit. So the first thing that I have done is I have found a theme that I like for my pottery. You see, my theme is superhero characters, not comic book like comics.
00:03:19
Speaker
Like I said in the beginning, it's superhero characters and it's just everything that has to do with like superhero and making that thing kind of come to life. I want to make my own superhero characters. That's what I want to do. Not so much make the comics, but that's what I want to do. That's my theme. I'm making superhero characters. Next, I have to tell you about how your ideas are going to your ideas are going to change a little bit. But what is important is if you have a theme
00:03:45
Speaker
then it doesn't matter if your ideas change or not. If you have a theme, you can stick to that theme. And if your ideas change, great. Now you have a new vision, you have a new focus to go on, but you're still gonna be able to stick with your theme.
Importance of Action Plan and Daily Practice
00:04:01
Speaker
So the second thing that you should be doing after you have found your theme with your pottery, and what I have kind of done is write down an action plan or have an action plan in your head.
00:04:14
Speaker
You see, I'm not really so much of a person to kind of write down every single step, every single thing that I must do, but I just kind of have a vision of what I am going towards and I am working towards that vision. I'm doing things that allow me to work towards that vision of what is in my head and bringing it out into the world.
00:04:37
Speaker
So having an action plan or having an action plan in your head gives you kind of step by step things that you must take to do right now. Like, for example, right now, because I'm not very good at sculpting the characters yet, all I'm doing is simply practicing and practicing the things to make the sculptures look better.
00:05:00
Speaker
And I'm not even putting it onto like mugs or vases or anything yet. I'm only just practicing on flat clay and that's all I'm doing. And I'm literally just practicing and then recycling. Practicing, recycling, practicing, recycling, practice, recycling. It's like a repeated process until my skills are a little bit better. And that brings me to my third point here. You have to make time to practice daily. That is what I am currently doing right now. I am making time to practice daily.
00:05:28
Speaker
It could be 10 minutes a day or it could be an hour or more a day. As long as you are practicing daily, your skills are going to build upon one another and one another, and you're going to grow 1% at a time. But that's why it's important to practice daily. If you aren't practicing, then you are never going to be able to make your vision come to life.
00:05:52
Speaker
So you have to start practicing daily. Not like every once in a while daily. Make time daily just to practice so your vision comes to life, so your theme comes to life. 10 minutes is all it takes per day. 10 minutes, that's it. You can do a lot in 10 minutes. Just practice for 10 minutes and get really good at what you're trying to do on.
00:06:15
Speaker
So the first thing that I am doing right now is I am focusing solely on one thing at a time. I'm not going on into other things because that's going to distract me from the first thing. If I don't get the first thing down, then everything else goes to crap later. So you have to focus on one thing at a time. Get good at that one thing. And then once you're good at that one thing, go on to the next thing.
00:06:41
Speaker
That's why it's important to have an action plan or vision that you are working towards. Because right now I am focusing on making my sculptures look really really good. Make it look like an actual comic book character through my sculptures.
00:06:56
Speaker
and applying it and learning how to apply it onto the pottery itself.
Focused Practice: Mastering One Skill at a Time
00:07:01
Speaker
So that is the one thing I am focusing on, making my sculptures look great. Amazing. Perfect. And then the next step after that, what I'm going to do is I'm going to put it onto mugs and start practicing on mugs and vases.
00:07:17
Speaker
And the next step after that is I'm gonna learn painting. I'm gonna learn underglazes. And the next thing after that, I'm gonna learn to what glazes I wanna use it. And it's everything is in order. You have to focus on one thing at a time. Don't go looking 12 steps in the future if you haven't completed the first step first. So focus on that one thing first. And then once you're good with that one thing, go on to the next thing so that you are continuously growing your skills.
00:07:45
Speaker
but focus on that one thing and get good at it. So those were the four things that really I am trying to do and what I am doing to make my voice come to life. You see, the first thing was that I talk about was that you have to find the theme for your pottery. My theme is making superhero characters with my pottery. That is my theme. And then the second thing, second step that I am doing right now
00:08:13
Speaker
is you either have to write down an action plan or have an action plan in your head to match your vision, make your vision come to life by having an action plan. These steps are what's going to guide you to your vision. The third thing that I'm doing is I'm making time to practice daily. Practice daily doesn't have to be long.
00:08:33
Speaker
But as long as you're practicing daily, then you're gonna go a lot further than if somebody who is only practicing once per week for an hour or two hours. You have to practice daily till your skills build upon each day. And then the fourth and last thing that I am doing currently is I'm focusing on one thing at a time. If I am focused on too many things all at once, then my vision is never gonna come to life. So you have to focus on one thing at a time until you get good at it and then move on to the next step.
