First Alteration Techniques

When I was in my first year of pottery, when I was a junior in high school, one of the things that really fascinated me was how my ceramics teacher altered his pots. It wasn't anything super, super complicated. And just by altering it just a tiny bit, it completely changed the form. And I really liked the way he did it because it was super, super simple.

So in this episode, I'm gonna give you three ways that you can alter your pottery and they are super, super easy to do. Now, the first way that you can alter your pottery is after you have thrown, let's say a bowl, you have thrown a bowl. The most simple way that you can alter your pottery is once you have thrown the bowl and it's still wet, the clay is still malleable, it's still ready to be molded, all you're gonna do is take your inside hand

And you're going to drag it up all the way up to the rim. And you drag it up to the rim. You do it maybe three times. Try to make it like a triangle or a square. And you rotate your wheel so that it makes it a different shape.

and that is just one way that is just super super simple and it really makes it look nice now afterwards you have to make sure that your rim is rounded or you can leave it a square or triangle depending on what you're trying to make but

I like to make mine rounded so that I can trim it. It's easier to trim later. But that is up to you.

Advanced Alteration Methods

Now the second way to alter your pottery is pretty much doing the same thing, but this time we're doing it with a base or maybe a planter. This one is, instead of doing three or four, we're going to do five. We're going to make a pentagon shape. And it's really simple. You do the same thing with your inside hand. You start from the bottom.

and you press out all the way to the top of the rim and you do that while rotate and then you rotate the wheel you can do it manually if you can so that you don't over skip the place where you're trying to alter the pot at and you do that five times maybe if you want you can do more
00:02:45
Speaker
but I find that I like this shape the best because it just comes out really really cool and these are super simple ways that you can alter your pottery but it comes out really really awesome.

Creative and Unconventional Techniques

00:02:58

Now the third way that you can alter your pottery is
00:03:02
Speaker
Try punching it. Try punching the clay. Try doing something to mess up the shape. Just do something to just kind of alter it. I like to use like, I like to karate chop it so that it gives it a little bit of a unique flair to it. You don't have to karate chop it super hard. It maybe took a little tap here and there while the clay is wet. And that is what is gonna alter your pottery. This is how you're gonna find your style by trying a bunch of these things out.
