Introduction and Episode Teasers

00:00:13
Speaker
What is up, everybody? Welcome back to SoccerWise. David Goss and Tommy Scoops with you for another fantastic episode. We are going to hit a lot of different things.
00:00:25
Speaker
But to start the show, we've got the biggest thing we could possibly do, which is...

Apologies Over Soccer Misjudgments

00:00:32
Speaker
paying for your debts lobbing scorchers are here aria and noah so that they can grovel at tom's feet and apologize for all of the misjustices they've ever made against us over the course of time but specifically related to ballard fc and vermont green yeah thanks for having us guys you know uh stay an intro why you A few things were werere said in the lead up to the the League 2, Natty. We said some things. You guys said some things.
00:01:02
Speaker
ah And then, you know, the outcome is what it is. And we're ah we're here to pay our debts.
00:01:09
Speaker
si you are Sipping on that that Seattle. Smoking that Seattle bag here. Take that. Did you paint that yourself, Tom? you I know that it looks crappy, but no, I appreciate you even considering that I did.
00:01:21
Speaker
Hold on, let me show you. His would be way worse. Watch. Oh, we got a problem. a painter? Oh, wow. badness is dude Grateful Dead Chalice.
00:01:36
Speaker
Was this from like a Tuesday wine and art um party in Brick, New Jersey? I got my wife so one of those paint and sips. No, not paint and sips. It was something I don't even know. So I was right.
00:01:47
Speaker
But she like she made like a beautiful vase vase, if you're nasty, and like something else that like we use regularly. And then I turned to her like a nine year old is like, look at the cup I made.
00:01:57
Speaker
And she's like, that's so nice. You can put it in your office. Get it away. So speaking of offices, Ari, you seem to be in a pretty normal professional situation.

Life and Music on Orcas Islands

00:02:07
Speaker
Noah, what's your deal right now?
00:02:09
Speaker
ah Well, you know, thank you one for for having us and two for accepting our wager. i guess maybe I should have been hopeful that you didn't accept our ways i wager. We'll talk more about how that was a fraudulent win later, but I am in a treehouse right now.
00:02:24
Speaker
um I you know I was dropping some lore earlier, but one of my friends is a recording artist there you go I see that wasn't that nice and he's working on a new album so we're out here on Orcas Islands one of the many things that's just better than Vermont about Washington in general is we have the San Juan Islands so took a ferry over here to detox detach record some music not me you would never hear me singing but uh we're here in the treehouse slash recording studio because Listen, I don't care if I'm camping in a yurt. I am coming on soccer wise. Listen, I own my bets.
00:02:58
Speaker
I own my bets. All right. I don't need Tom over here calling the Italian mob on me. All right. like I can't have it. Okay. The the word is mafia. I like ice cream too much. I have to be able to go to the ice cream shops. Okay. It's just, that's how it goes.
00:03:12
Speaker
Would you are you in a tree house that's elevated because you're scared of being eaten by orcas, which is the other advantage of being in the Pacific Northwest? Great. Correct. But, you know, the the fun fact here is that orcas really they don't they don't really mess with people except like rich people on yachts.
00:03:27
Speaker
So, I mean, you know, however your take on that is or we're big or fans sponsoring. Yeah, like this could be a, you know, a positive thing. Yeah, sounds like professional recording artist Noah over there is looking down on his fellow riches as he talks about it.
00:03:43
Speaker
Ari, you were not in the video originally placing the bet on the Ballard Vermont Green. I assume you orchestrated the whole thing. I actually ah did not orchestrate the whole thing and found out about it when I saw the video like you guys did. But I was ah i was with it right away. I thought ah i was feeling pretty confident. You know, ah Ballard FC had a great season.
00:04:05
Speaker
I didn't even know Vermont Green was a team until I found it out Ballard FC was playing them. So I was like, all right, they got this. You know, just a little trip to Burlington, Daleville, whatever. And yeah.
00:04:16
Speaker
take home the natty uh didn't pan out like that but uh i was all i was all for the uh for the wager thought we had it in the bag but unfortunately didn't pan out like that no you went rogue i did i often do wildcard dude yeah well it was great because tom didn't know either yeah from what i heard i saw the videos yeah exactly so we've got a we know who runs these shows here we know who's on the front foot tom was 20 minutes late to this so you know it's even better He was bringing news about, ah you know, ah Jackson Reagan's, you know, dog had to get it's get fixed. You know, I don't know. I don't know. Is this big good? I'm just eating it out there. Yeah, sorry it started with promise it was a good idea. Yeah.
00:05:00
Speaker
Tom didn't know about the bet, and yet within 30 seconds of the game ending, you got all caps text from Tommy Scoops telling you to grovel at his feet. He's not going to let a W go by.
00:05:13
Speaker
That's fair. w No, I mean, I respect it, man. You know, i listen, I also played D3 soccer for a minute, and and I know, like, you got to take your wins when you can get them. That sounds like a bit.
00:05:26
Speaker
well Well, the bit was that like the team that I was on, we didn't win a single game. so yeah yeah so But I guess that's lore. you know I'm not i'm um not on my bits today, guys. I'm in the treehouse. i just thinking He's thinking about bars.
00:05:40
Speaker
um your life is above I'm on a higher level. um yeah Also, in this scenario, your life, just the way it's functioning, is the bit. um Because you're in a treehouse on an island around orcas.
00:05:51
Speaker
There were parts of the bet that we have to get through. so the first part is this.

The Hot Sauce Bet

00:05:55
Speaker
You owe us hot sauces. um What is the flavor and what's the situation with this hot sauce and when should I expect This is our world famous Hoxman Ferments Lobbing Scorcher sauce. We are going to get you some bottles shipped out as well as to your admin on social media because shout out mar yeah we love ah we love sharing the wealth. But if you want to get it, lobbingscorchers.com slash sauce.
00:06:21
Speaker
It's a really great sauce. We recommend it on Breakfast Burritos. We're both breakfast burrito fiends. We love them. But it's amazing. It's so good. It's a like almost like a green salsa, like very tomatillo forward, not too spicy, but you get the kick a little bit after. But it's not one of those where you're like.
00:06:38
Speaker
So we took about three months to produce this. It's all locally made here in Seattle, works with local farmers, all that kind of stuff. It is so good. And we will be sending you over ah nice little care package from Hacks and Ferments. So we appreciate that.
00:06:53
Speaker
um you can enjoy it and that's the that's the least bad part of this bag because really we got the shill and you guys get to taste the greatest sauce of all time so all right i find it funny you've never heard of vermont green yet you made a vermont green themed hot sauce well it's great yeah i mean that's green it is it's a green you know it's uh It's kind of unfortunate that ah Vermont Green and the Seattle Sounders are both green because don't we have to like, do we renounce the color green or do we have to? what I honestly don't even know the terms. I forgot.
00:07:28
Speaker
Yeah, you should give us a list of all the things you hate about green and I will ask you about specific greens as we go through it and you can tell me the terrible things about them. You get to keep Kale. I think ours should start there.
00:07:40
Speaker
yeah so Ari that is the second half of this bet is you have to renounce the color green and how and tell us how terrible it is uh I I hereby on soccer wise renounce the color green it's uh it's always been uh a terrible color as you can see uh the Seattle Sounders have gone blue they don't even like the color green anymore so uh uh the color green is renounced by lobbing scorchers hereby ah in uh recognition of the vermont green who you know ballard fc lost to a color so yeah that's pretty uh that's pretty degrading honestly but uh yeah i don't know what no is there anything else to renounce here i'm
00:08:29
Speaker
well i think for for for one you should go and turn that green light off in your background i think that's part of it the jerseys off the wall take i got a lot of green behind me so yeah kind of ah not i also i also will renounce the color green famously i love just gray just just gray things uh plants that are dead uh things that are things that that's that's the beauty of the world is really the midwest um and i just i i can't i can't ever get behind green and i will never wear the color green again i will make sure that i send you some videos getting rid of all my green clothes yeah um and
00:09:10
Speaker
The Sounders really like I will be talking to their director of brand and I will make sure that they get rid of the color green as well. Rave green, terrible color, mauve green, olives, ah lettuce, ah cucumber, asparagus.
00:09:27
Speaker
it's all bad and you know i brought up a list of shades of green turns out sacramento is a shade of green okay no i'm okay with distancing myself from that one to be honest with you uh parakeet is a shade of green fern is a shade of green chartreuse chartreuse ooh that is a good mouthfeel yeah mean I haven't heard a chartreuse reference we denounce it though we denounce I denounce chartreuse absolutely yeah I feel like I should call HR after just the words mouthfeel made made me uncomfortable I disavow mouthfeel and chartreuse and everyone in Seattle will know you hate rave green and you live there and you have to for the rest of your lives and that's a reality
00:10:10
Speaker
Yeah, I apologize to all of the Vermont fans. I wasn't familiar with your game. I didn't realize that there were that many of you ah in that state to be able to go to a game like that.
00:10:22
Speaker
I am denounce our are shit talking, but I look forward to, you know, and now we're even. All right. Oh, look at this. Look at this guy. This guy literally went into the locker room and stole the the team merch.
00:10:38
Speaker
Stole the team merch. Right there. That's pretty sick. You did sound good on the call, I will say. Thank you. i Appreciate that. My grandfather's 88th birthday, playing the holding my iPhone while he was, you know, singing and blowing out his candles of some of his last moments of his life.
00:10:55
Speaker
So this is how much this game meant to me. And to hear the sweet songs of David Goss was just incredible. So you had the same experience as Bernie Sanders staff, apparently, because he sat and streamed the game as well around a similar age, probably doing a similar thing.
00:11:09
Speaker
Yeah, they went to ah college together back in 1910. So that's pretty sweet. Yeah. but They're both Brooklyn Dodgers fans. Yeah, they're both Brooklyn Dodgers fans. Seattle South guys.
00:11:22
Speaker
So now that we've gotten you to to work through all your bets, I will tell you this. Knowing Tom as I do, he's happy to go double or nothing. So if you can think of the next thing, Tom's back at the table. let He's got with the dice back in his hands.
00:11:36
Speaker
Soccer-wise sponsored crowbar? is that what we're going to put on the table Oh. I mean, i think... you guys can think about it you don't have to have yeah use the time in the woods to consider what you want I'm gonna have to ponder how we can but also exploit Tom's gambling degeneracy yeah I think we gotta get you guys out here for like a live show in in Washington because You know, and east coast like I've said, it's not great.
00:12:03
Speaker
It's not great. I lived there. It's not great. You know, we need to bring you out here to the West Coast and and maybe we can involve some sort of travel in this bet so that we can really bankrupt each other. That's that's a good double or nothing.
00:12:15
Speaker
Make the podcast budget zero. Yeah, i I feel better about betting when I feel like I'm about to fall off a cliff. I feel lot.
00:12:25
Speaker
but you loser Okay, speaking of all of this, before we let you guys go, speaking of feeling alive, I know both of you obviously hating the color rave green, but also being around the Seattle Sounders.
00:12:40
Speaker
Do you feel like a lot of children grew up dreaming that one day the Seattle Sounders would be the number one team in stage three of phase one of the League's Cup coming into the MLS only table?
00:12:53
Speaker
Is that like a huge moment in the city's history? Yeah, absolutely. I've been saying, you know, dating back years, that phase one of League's Cup is among the most coveted tables that you want to finish at the ah at the top of. So, honestly, I mean, they don't even need to play the rest of the tournament as far as far as I'm concerned. Go out on top, 3-0-0, plus 9-GD. That's about as as the trophy. Yeah.
00:13:18
Speaker
that's about as ah that's about as good as the trophy yeah I agree it's it's amazing go for there be a trophy created for this is that the feeling around if phase one if we have the tin pot supporter shield which isn't really mean anything you know I think that we should we should get one for this you know I don't disagree with you. I think I appreciate that the club had the vision to ship Club World Cup group stage to focus on this.
00:13:47
Speaker
Well, we've been saying for a long time that League's Cup is the greatest tournament ever created and and that ah we are very pro- ah MLS created tournaments in general, you know, like just the Open Cup, like whatever, you know, that's fine. We want the history and and the honor

Seattle Sounders' League Ambitions

00:14:05
Speaker
and the greatness of this hourglass shaped trophy. All right. Like this is what we truly want ah to get to the final the first year.
00:14:14
Speaker
This is Sounders heritage. Okay. This is Sounders heritage. We need we need this trophy and Pro Leagues Cup podcast famously. So, It's why you guys are huge playoff fans as well, because with nine games to go, they finally announced the playoff format, Major League Soccer. And I think you're both very in favor of late announcement, quick changing competitions over and over again that are invented by Major League Soccer.
00:14:39
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I agree with everything I know I said about Leagues Cup, unless the Sounders had ah crashed out, in which case it's a cynical cash grab meeting trophy that no one no one cares about. But it was kind of crazy yeah watching the game last night, like going to the game. I was like, man, they've won the first two games. They dropped seven goals on Cruz Azul like they should be in a. ah in like pole position to advance, which they were, but then it's like, oh wow, if they lose, they're out. So, you know, the this format, it's a little weird, but it did make every every single game, there's like no margin for error, high stakes, because if they lost that game last night, they would have straight up been out of it despite the two games, the two wins to start.
00:15:23
Speaker
What was your your y'all's reaction over the 7-0? ah Maybe you already talked about it. Famously, I've been in a treehouse away from the world, so I didn't hear it. But ah I have I will give you a little insight here in the press box. I have never seen a press box.
00:15:41
Speaker
actually like erupt like we were in the supporters section that Pedro de la Vega goal every single reporter next to me in a line stood up and just went like this surrender Cobra the craziest thing I've ever seen unbelievable yeah surrender Cobra literally Pedro, like, the announcer said De La Vega, and then when they zoomed in on him, i was like, that one, that couldn't have been him.
00:16:03
Speaker
Two, like, cut off the hair, all of that. Like, i was like, is this right? Did I just, like, am I hallucinating? Like, that was the greatest one of the greatest goals I've ever seen in my life. Like, and for that to be the seventh in a 7-0 win...
00:16:14
Speaker
and Unreal. Like, what a moment. ah tom Tom was so inspired by it. He wanted to start the next show with me questioning me, like, is Pedro De La Vega here? Has he arrived?
00:16:25
Speaker
Is this the player that can carry this team? Like, Tom was fully bought in from that one goal. I did actually do that. They had than one goal. so So, yeah, like, do you guys think this team can win the West?
00:16:38
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, they definitely can and they certainly can if De La Vega turns out to be this type of player. it's We're still talking about like a relatively small sample size of him playing like a like a demigod, but the thing is... The things that he's showing in these last few games are those just types of moments of an individual brilliance that just the fact that we're seeing that he has that stuff in his bag. It's like, all right, if he is even semi consistently playing at this level, it's a pretty big ceiling changer for, uh,
00:17:14
Speaker
for this team. like This team has a very strong foundation, but like I think the criticism in the last couple of years is they've lacked that kind of ah and individual brilliance, game-changing type player.
00:17:25
Speaker
So if De La Vega is that, then I think this this team can contend for this League's Cup and be a playoff contender for sure. i I do too. So um I want to start with saying, yes, I do believe that this team is fully capable of winning the West and the West is a little bit more open than I think the the top three looks like. Like

Defensive Concerns for Sounders

00:17:43
Speaker
again, I think Seattle, LAFC and Portland are are absolutely in the mix and it's, it's not like a heavy favorite situation, but the only worries for me is that again, a small sample size, but the last four MLS games, they've conceded nine goals against some giants in the league of Kansas city, Colorado, Atlanta, and San Jose.
00:18:02
Speaker
And Jackson Reagan and Yimar paired two of those four games. Each of them played three of those four games. So it wasn't like everybody was injured. And and with Jordan Morris, like somebody said in the chat, like if he's healthy, they're legit cup contender. I agree.
00:18:15
Speaker
He's played 45 plus minutes. He has not played 45 minutes more in a game since March 11th, March 11th. Like, so it's it it's a bigger if than I think that I noticed, like, cause he was in and out and came back and I thought that he had a run of games, but anytime that he's gotten a little momentum, he's gotten hurt again.
00:18:32
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I'm like just I've been a little bit more hesitant on Pedro de la Vega than literally every single person on the entire planet. He gives me PTSD. I'm just I'm just like, ah like, let's just like let him do his thing. But like, i don't want to put all that on him. Like, I don't know. It's it's hard for me to really get on that hype train just yet.
00:18:53
Speaker
I said it after that that banger golazo, though, that like at least he had made his mark in multiple matches that he had. He had kind of announced himself as being someone who could be a game changing player, finally playing on the left for the first time in his Sounders career, which is what he played at Lanus and all of these other ah places, which is surprising that we never saw him out there until now.
00:19:16
Speaker
You see Paul Rothrock now playing on the right. You see Ryan Kent playing. ah Well, Ryan Kent now injured and also ah Albert Rusnak injured. i don't know to the extent of that. But to me...
00:19:28
Speaker
Even with those two players going down, how deep this team is, I still am not super concerned with that. That's crazy. When you lose your DP10, the guy who's been powering basically the entire offense and has been an MVP, like he's been getting MVP shouts, granted, you know, lower tier, probably like a, oh yeah, he's like, could be maybe.
00:19:47
Speaker
But regardless, he goes down. We don't know how long he's going to be out. You've got your, you've got a winger who's a... you know a european star who goes out and you're like oh no we're like i don't feel super nervous so i think the sounders do have the opportunity to win the west i don't know if that's going to actually happen i think they've just there's been so many games where they've just dropped silly points and at the end of the day like If someone else gets hot in the West, it's it is it's wide open and and you just really never know. So I'm interested to see what I'm really more interested to see, though. I think they could take this League's Cup. Like, I hope that they truly, you know, go for it. And it seems like from what I've heard from Brian and from the players is that it's like a player led movement. They want to cook on this League's Cup. They just played in the Club World Cup. They felt like they kind of.
00:20:39
Speaker
played well and they like held to themselves but they wanted a result they wanted to show that like we're here and we can play with the biggest teams in the world and they did and now they want to say okay listen Liga Mechies teams you're nothing to us you're just a 7-0 blip on the map we are going to make sure that we get your coach fired that's what they want and so I am excited to see to see this play out and uh you know as for the West I really I'm not sure yet but uh it's It is the fastest route to a CCC spot for them, and you have to assume just based off the way the results have gone, there's a decent chance they play an MLS team in a semifinal. So, like,

Jesus Ferreira's Role in Seattle

00:21:18
Speaker
there is a pretty quick, from this point now, two-game road to that CCC spot, which maybe no club in MLS cares about more than Seattle, so it makes a ton of sense. um can we
00:21:30
Speaker
Can I ask you, what's the deal with Jesus Ferreira? Like, what does he do? What does he do? Yeah. Well, that was a very polarizing question among the fan base earlier this season. ah It was ah lengthier process than i think most would have liked to figure out exactly what his role is on the team. Like I watched him on FC Dallas for years, so I felt like I had a pretty good handle on his game. But watching him like week in week out, ah it definitely became a thing of like, what is exactly his position? Like, is he going to be a number 10?
00:22:07
Speaker
Are they going to play him out wide? Can he play up top? they They ran him up top a couple times. It didn't really work. It felt like he just wasn't really fitting. ah But in the last month or so, they've kind of given him consistent run in this wide channel, which he doesn't really play it like a traditional winger, like a Ryan Kent or De La Vega or a Rothrock but he has found a way to be effective and productive ah in that spot in this last run of games here and I've loved how he's been ah looking lately he's a very ah and unselfish player he combines with other guys very well ah he almost he would rather get an assist than a goal so I i appreciate that about him ah the goal scoring numbers have not been there to what
00:22:55
Speaker
were expected so far but he has started scoring in these last in these last few games so I actually ah I think his stock is up right now I know he uh banged a header off the post last night uh from point blank range know but it feels like the the goals that he used to score at FC Dallas are starting to he's starting to get those with Seattle which uh that is it feels like it's paying off to what We all were hoping when they made this trade, which we were touting the trade at the time because we both watched Jesus Ferreira on FC Dallas when he was a best 11 player.
00:23:29
Speaker
So I was at his first game when he scored that banger. Yeah, we're i'm I'm hoping there's even a um another level to be to be reached there as he continues to get more integrated and comfortable.
00:23:41
Speaker
Yeah, it would be nice because on this show, I was like, whoa, that's a DP on a non-DP spot. We saw what he did in Dallas. Call us Inter-Miami, baby. Come on. Father Sarducci is what we're getting you called right now. No, by the way. Father Dito Sarducci.
00:23:59
Speaker
Yeah. Let me close you guys out on this one. This is a big question for anyone who's, like, sort of experienced in Seattle and understands the club and everything they've built. It's a city of great, I think, star players, but also especially center forwards. So rank these five center forwards and where they sit in the club's history. Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins, Raul Rhea-Diaz, Blazin Kufo, and Osaze de Rosario.
00:24:24
Speaker
no uh now Danny Mussovsky wow okay yeah i was gonna say where's Moose what is this oh he's already old news this is D-Row country now if there's a game Seattle plays going forward that D-Row does not start and he's not injured there should be investigations on what's going on I mean the drro celebration I like i like that uh I like that take on D-Row but uh I mean to warm up I got Rui Diaz one. i don't ah I don't know if you would dispute that, Noah, but whenever I get asked this question, I put Rui Diaz one.
00:25:00
Speaker
I think Obafemi Martins is a good shout. Dempsey, it's like He was one of those guys that didn't really have like a real position. I don't really consider him a Pier 9 like that. But ah as as far as like the top two, I think it goes Rui Diaz, Oba. Rui Diaz, the differentiating factor being the the trophies that he led the helped lead the team to.
00:25:25
Speaker
And then Obafemi Martins, people forget. But ah i mean some of the goals that that guy scored were... insane so i know this is just a big big question to do the osazi joke but like freddy montero not being here hurts yeah i wasn't even i wasn't even gonna have you answer this question i just want to have been an answer yeah yeah ah did the not very good ah listen you love no one's got seven minutes on this now he's got he's got some crypto to sell you buddy he's got some crypto to sell you for your gambling habits you're you're ready to go hit him we're talking freddy on this
