Speaker: Welcome to the DIY Goalie Podcast, where hosts and goalie coaches Nathan Park and Connor Munday share their insights on how to become a better goalie.

Speaker: Goalies, how are we doing? Welcome back to the DIY Goalie Podcast presented by True North Goaltending. How's it going? Nice to see everyone. um It's going to be a quick hit episode today. Just something that I see on Facebook a couple of times that I kind of wanted to just quickly talk about. Nathan and I will probably do a more in-depth podcast.

Speaker: conversation about it later on. um For those of you who may not know, my name is Connor Monday. I'm one of the co-hosts of the DIY Goalie podcast. um Hopefully everybody's doing well. Hopefully everybody is enjoying their off season. I know spring hockey is also um winding down as well. So hopefully everybody had a fun time there. um Nathan and I have both been pretty busy. So that's why we haven't have been able to get together as much. We do have a very, very special guest coming on to the pod, hopefully by next episode.

Speaker: um But we'll see kind of how things kind of how things play out there. um Just a quick how just good. yeah Just a quick couple of housekeeping items ah before we get started. um Both of our summer camps are full, which is incredible to see. You love to see it.

Speaker: I'm really really excited to get things going for August which will be crazy in of itself. um Back to back weeks of camps and we have um you know my our beginner camps and we're at camps and everything which is insane on top of the facility sessions as well so um Our beginner camp is still available. I think we do have minimal amount of slots, but both our five day and our four day camp has been maxed out. So thank you again to everybody who's reached out. And I believe our ring at sessions ring at camp as well still have some open spots as well. So

Speaker: If you are a ring at goalie or you are looking for a ring at goalie training and do happen to be in the Edmonton area, come check us out. TrueNorthGoaltending.com. Register your spot for today. um On top of that, our facility sessions are always open. Go check us out. TrueNorthGoaltending.com. You can book a session with myself, Nathan, or any of our amazing staff members that we do have that work at our facility.

Speaker: um on top of that something that so we i guess as of recording this had just gone out uh we are partnering up with kc north minor hockey to do their summer saves three-day goalie program um i actually had the chance to run that last year it was a lot of fun so i'm looking forward to be backing to be back doing that this year manning the show um so that will be a fun time so it's not literally limited to just KC minor hockey goalies. Edmonton minor hockey goalies or Edmonton area minor hockey goalies um are are permitted to register for this camp. Highly would recommend to do so. You get to work with myself and a couple of our other staff members who we have on hand. And as well, as's just it's a good little conditioning stand. Kind of keeps you on the ice a little bit. kind of gets you to work on some things. Um, so we, it was, it was a fantastic success last year. Uh, so definitely, uh, definitely looking forward to being back to that today, or I guess this upcoming summer.

Speaker: Um, all right, let's get into it here. I did just want to, uh, like I said, come on and do a quick hit, uh, just talking about moving up levels. Um, I don't think it's something that we really talked about a whole lot. uh,

Speaker: And we can break I can break this down and we can do a whole episode about it. But I want to get that back and forth with Nathan on that. So I'm just going to kind of do my side and just kind of um things with that. I'm also just wanted to talk specifically about the difference in skill and the difference in shots and what your goalie and how you as a parent um can kind of help with that.

Speaker: um Obviously, it is a very, very big jump if you are going from the U13 to the U15 level or from the U15 to the U17 level. It is a major, major, major, major difference if you are jumping from house league hockey, if you will, into, um you know, a AA or AAA stream. um Different shooters, different plays, you know, maybe some stuff that, you know, we're not ah entirely attuned to before.

Speaker: Um, so all of that can be overwhelming. All of that can be, um, frustrating as well. Um, for us as goaltenders, you know, it's, it's a matter of how we deal with that. And it's a matter of, you know,

Speaker: i oh i I lost my train of thought. it's it's it's it's It's just a matter of how we approach it, really, at the end of the day. um Obviously, we can't really do anything about, um you know, shooters shooting harder. um What we can do is what is in terms of how we react or how we go into those saves. You know, it's obviously habits that... need to be broken and habits that we need to change in order to, you know, make ourselves successful at the next level. Even if you're just maybe jumping up a couple of tiers or like I'd said, if you're jumping from the minor hockey stream to the, um, to the, uh, to the, to the double A, triple A stream or beyond. um,

Speaker: Again, we talk about it so many times before, you know, goalies, you know, got watch hockey games. Goalies, you know, have to have to, um you know, just pay attention to to the game and just be able to learn and read the game. um That is always going to be critical in some way, shape or form. um I guess the other thing as well is that if you do find yourself taking stingers in places and you are making saves, you know, as to to the best of your ability and you are doing them properly and you still end up getting stingers, you know, obviously upgrading and equipment is going to be, you know, a big factor upgrading in the undergarments, you know, as well. I know that there are some undergarments that have, you know, the padding in the fabric, um,

Speaker: You know, with that as well. um In terms of the parent side of things, you know, obviously we want to help out our kids. We want to, um for lack a better term, protect our kids, you know, as as as much as possible. ah But sometimes you know the best approach to it is they've got to figure it out themselves. We can't really go down to the coaches and say, your players are shooting too hard or your players are doing all this dangling stuff and you know making my kid look silly and whatnot.

Speaker: Um, you know, so we, we have to, we, we want to be there and to, you know, to support them and be there for, be there for our goalie, uh, you know, just to somebody to bounce ideas off of, or just to kind of maybe, um, show from an outside perspective, similar in, similar in a coaching, um, similar in a coaching sense. Um,

Speaker: Um, you know, going back to the skill side of things with, with goalies, um, you know, always, you know, we want to be, we want to do better in our skating.

Speaker: We want to, um, do better in our puck tracking and, and so forth. Definitely would be helpful. You know, if you go into camps, um, like the D I like the true North goaltending camps, Um, and, um, you know, being able to go up against bigger shooters and and harder shooters.

Speaker: I've, I've had it in my camp, so I've had it in my sessions as well, where I'm shooting as if I'm shooting on a, uh, on a, on a, on a double A or triple A goalie or a junior goalie. And sometimes I'll have kids coming up to me be like, you're shooting too hard. You're shooting too fast. I can't track it.

Speaker: And, you know, sometimes it's warranted, and you know, definitely if I'm shooting on like a brand new goalie or like a goalie who's like seven, eight years old, it's like, all right, I guess I got to dial it back. But if I'm going up against a shooter, that's like a third, that's like, that's like a 13 year old goalie or, you know, a 15 year old goalie. Then I'm like, okay, well, you know, like this is like, these are gonna be the quality types of shots that, you know, that that you guys are going to see. Right. Um,

Speaker: Sometimes I do find that I can get ahead of myself a little bit. I can, I can, I can get a little too into it, but you know, so we do have to dial it back, but in the same breath too, it's, you know, we, we have to, we have to, we're going to be facing those shots in some, some way, shape or form. Um, barely goalies know that all too well where, you know, you're playing in a div of 13 level and you got a div five shooter coming out to to play on the opposite team and how much fun that is.

Speaker: Um, um, But being able to read and react to to the shot. And again, it's just it's just going back to foundations. It's just going back to basics at the end of the day is is the biggest thing. And I think, you know, again, like I see on, you know, Facebook groups and such is like, well, what can I do for my goalie? You know, when they're going up against players that are, you know, better than them and, you know, they they want to, you know, they can play at double A or triple A level, but they're just not getting there. They're just they're just getting frustrated or whatever.

Speaker: it's it's it's easy for me to sit here and say let them be frustrated it's easier for me to sit here and say let that happen because obviously we want them to have fun in the same breath and that's the whole point of hockey and that's the whole point of goaltending um but you know in in a in a sense you know they have to kind of fall on their face in order to you know in order in order to learn right and that's the only way that they're going to learn is that yeah They're going to have to kind of fall flat on their face. They're going to to lit up a few times, um but it's just a matter of how they read and react and and and bounce back to it. um

Speaker: the found like The foundation is one thing and the skill set is really another. so It's just a matter of fine-tuning things. And, um you know, and keeping improving on our skating, keeping improving on our tracking, improving on our, you know, positioning and angles and just understanding as well that it all kind of goes hand in hand, both with the goaltending skills and the play in our own zone.

Speaker: you know So being able to understand plays, and being able to you know understand setups, being able to understand you know box plus one or umbrella or whatever, right the con and you know the the Connor McDavid plays or the Leon Dreisaitl plays, right the Alex Ovechkin plays as well too. right Um, so I think, you know, as goalies come into the upcoming year and maybe are going into a different, um, league or a different level, different age group, however you want to put it, um, it

Speaker: Again, this is where the training aspect comes in. You know, if you're able to get into a training session, whether it's a player development session where you're more so just a shooter tutor out there, or if you are going into a goalie session where you do have, um,

Speaker: You know, players or shooters of a higher age level or a different skill set um shooting on you. Take advantage of that. Take advantage of, um you know, being able to learn from that, because especially if like if you're going up against, you know, double A, triple A shooters.

Speaker: um and you want to get to the AA, AAA level, depending on age age group, of course, um take advantage of that. Take advantage of that opportunity. Take advantage of you know being able to learn and just kind of see where your benchmark is and being able to improve upon that um from there. I know some people, you know they have taken you know spring hockey, and I think this is where spring hockey does come in handy, um you know where they are able to play a couple of ages older, right? Because there's really no regular, well, there is regulation, but there's no regulation at the same time. Um, you know, in terms of, um,

Speaker: you know, kind of caliber of play. So if you are able to, you know, play on a team, that's maybe a couple of couple of years older, a couple of skill sets better. um Take advantage of that. Absolutely. Jump on, jump on that train, jump on that bag bandwagon and just, just be ready that, you know, it's not going to be the same as, you know, what you're used to, you know, playing tier five minor hockey and you're jumping up to, you know, tier two, tier one, double a shooters. Right. So, yeah,

Speaker: I don't know. I think just at the end of the day, it's it's it's all about improvement in the same breath. It's all about understanding um you know and reading you know reading and reacting to the play um and being able to understand that our skills that the foundation and the skill set that we have now isn't going to be the same or isn't going to be good enough for whatever next level that we get that we that we want to be at. So we have to understand that you know, like I said, you're going to fall down, going to have to get back up, but we have to understand that, um

Speaker: you know, there are going to be, we are going to be frustrated and we're going to kind of, you know, poop the bed a little bit. And, but it's just a matter of bouncing back. Um, yeah, so like I said, it's it's a quick hit episode today. Just kind of my initial thoughts on that as I again i was observed reading, you know, Facebook posts. Um, well, I definitely want to revisit this with Nathan and, um, you know, we'll, ah we'll kind of get a little bit more and ah we'll just kind of get a little bit back and forth and as well touch on some other things that I had as well.

Speaker: But we'll kind of leave it at that. So with that being said, thank you very much everyone for listening to another rendition of the DIY goalie podcast presented by true north goaltending. Go check us out. True north goaltending.com. Like I said, like I said, at the start of this, both of our, I guess, week long camps with our five day camp and our four day camp are sold out. So, unfortunately, if you were not able to get in on that, it is what it is. But, again, if you do happen to be in the Edmonton area and you weren't able to book an on-ice session with us as part of our camp, but you would still like to work with us, we do have our facility sessions that year-round. Again, you can go online, truenorthgoaltending.com. With our camps, though, our U7, U9 beginner camps are still open. We do have some very minimal spots left, so go check that out. And if you are a ring at goalie in the Edmonton area, again, turn with goaltending.com and, you know, book on with our camp as well. I think we've actually got some pretty good bookings with that so far. So that's exciting to see.

Speaker: um On the flip side of that, like I had also said the start of this pod, ah we have teamed up with KC Minor Hockey to do their Summer Safe three-day three day weekend camp. So again, that is not um limited to KC Minor Hockey goalies. ah That is, again, open to Edmonton and area goalies. ah So if you um want to get some on ice training with us you're more than welcome to do that um go check us out on your favorite social media platforms all at true north goaltending except on instagram because we like to be different that one is yeg goalie coach you can follow myself on instagram at monday gc where i post some goalie stuff most of my personal life stuff but you know you get to know one of your coaches in the same breath which is pretty cool

Speaker: um ah Go follow us on your favorite podcasting platforms, whether that be Apple, iHeart, or Spotify. If you are a returning listener, thank you very much. Make sure hit the share button as it helps the algorithm algorithm and we are able to bring new goalies to our little corner of the internet.

Speaker: Same deal. If you're watching on the video side of things, um you know hit the like button, hit subscribe button. If you're new, hit the follow button as well. Again, it helps the algorithm and the more goals that we are able to bring together, the better. um Lots of fun stuff coming down the pipeline for both True North Goaltending and the DIY Goal Podcast. So with that being said, on by behalf of myself and Nathan Park, this has been another rendition of the DIY Goal Podcast presented by True North Goaltending.

Speaker: Make some saves, goalies. We'll see we'll see who guys next time. Take care.
