In this episode of 'Shaping Your Pottery,' host Nic Torres shares insights on how treating pottery like a regular nine to five job can dramatically improve your craft. The idea, inspired by a conversation with full-time potter Ron Philbeck, suggests setting a dedicated daily work schedule for pottery, whether it's the whole day or just a couple of hours. This routine helps build the habit of consistent practice, which is crucial for finding one's unique voice in pottery. Ron's method demonstrates that regardless of when you choose to work, the key is dedicating consistent, focused time to the craft every day. Nic emphasizes that this structured approach not only fosters discipline and productivity but also accelerates the journey towards developing a distinctive style in pottery.

So I'm always curious about how to be better with your time and how to actually get into the studio in order to be all those troubles. And I'm always curious about that.
00:00:31
Speaker
So I asked Ron the question, how do you make time to get into the studio? Because that's probably the hardest thing about pottery sometimes is making time to get into the studio. And he says that what he does is to he likes to treat pottery like a nine to five.
00:00:48
Speaker
You see, he doesn't even have to be nine to five because he explains that other people have different times where they like to work, maybe like to work at night, maybe like to work in the morning, maybe like to work midday. And he says that to find a time throughout the day where he dedicated just that amount of time to making pottery. And he said doing this, it has helped him a lot.

with being able to get into the studio because now he has that habit pretty much of getting into the studio every day and working for a specific amount of time. And once that time was up, he's done. He's done for the day and he could rest and he works all the time. Granted, he's also a full time potter now. And but and I'm always curious about this, how working on how this can actually help you with your own pottery game studio. And I think it's a wonderful idea.

So the benefits of treating a potter like a nine to five is that you have a routine that you can do every single day. You make the pot, you finish the pots and everything in between, right? And that's what you could do during that nine to five. But you don't have to be that dead specific on having eight or nine hours out of your day dedicated just to pottery.

pottery from 9 to 5 only because I get a little bit antsy and I want to start moving around a little bit.
00:02:17
Speaker
So maybe an hour or two is most for me. And it might be the same for you. You know, you set that you set that dedicated time for one hour, two hours, and you just make whatever you want to make. And now if you try to do that every single day, things are going to compound on you and you're going to be able to make powder that looks absolutely incredible simply by treating it a nine to five because building that routine, building that habit, it's going to help you find your own voice a lot quicker.
00:02:45
Speaker
because you're dedicating that time every single day to try to make pottery. Because that's one of the simplest thing that you can do to find your voice is to simply just make a lot of pots. And if you have that dedicated time every day or every as much as you can, then you can find your voice a lot faster.
