#380 You don't need something extravagant to find your voice

Shaping Your Pottery with Nic Torres

In this episode of 'Shaping Your Pottery,' host Nic Torres emphasizes that potters don't need to create extravagant pieces to find their unique voice in pottery. He encourages artists to pursue what excites them, even if it's simple pottery, and to ignore outside opinions about how they should modify their work. Nic suggests seeking feedback from a variety of sources, including other potters and loved ones, to determine if you're on the right path but stresses the importance of listening to your own feelings of excitement and satisfaction as the true indicator. The episode concludes with an offer for listeners to access 53 themes to help them find a theme for their pottery, aiming to assist potters in defining their work and becoming known for something specific.

Introduction: Finding Your Unique Pottery Voice

00:00:00
Speaker
You don't need to be making some extravagant pottery to be able to find your own pottery voice. What is up Shaper Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and for those that don't know me it's my mission to have potters like yourself to have your own unique voice with your pottery. So, a lot of the times I feel like potters in general, artists probably too, other artists in general, they feel like they have to make this super extravagant thing, super extravagant pot in order to find your own unique voice with your pottery.

but I don't think that is to be true. If you want

The Value of Simplicity Over Extravagance

to make some simple part and that is what excites you, that is the direction you should be going.
00:00:42
Speaker
and not listen to what other people are thinking and what other people are saying about, well, you should do this to your work, or you should do that to your work, or maybe you should add some different colors to your work, it would look a little bit more exciting. But if you like that simple pottery, and that is a look for you, continue going down that route. Because if you listen to that, then you're going to know that you are heading in the right direction, or maybe you're not heading in the right direction.

Speaker
But what matters

Listening to Your Feelings and Feedback

00:01:11
Speaker
most is not about making this super shoving pot, it's about listening to your feeling, listening to if you are heading in the right direction with your pottery.
00:01:21
Speaker
And you don't need this super extravagant pot to know if you're heading in the right direction. But how do you know if you're heading in the right direction? So the best way, there are a couple of ways. So number one is to get around other potters and see what they think. Even get outside opinions from, you know, your parent, your wife, your boyfriend, girlfriend, brother, sister, whatever, your dog.
00:01:48
Speaker
get outside opinions from them and see what they think because it is important to get outside opinion. And if what they

say kind of resonates with you, then you kind of know you're heading in the right direction. Number two, it's really just a feeling, a feeling of if you are heading in that right direction, you are heading in that
00:02:09
Speaker
That direction where you know you can be making this pottery over and over again and it excites you. It's that feeling you get. Maybe when you open the kiln and you see it and you get super jazzed, you're like, I can't wait to get this out of the kiln, it's so good. I can't wait. It's that feeling you get on a Christmas morning or your birthday or something. It's that feeling where you know that it excites you and excites you every single time you get into the studio. You have to listen to that feeling
00:02:37
Speaker
And again, your pottery doesn't need to be super, super complicated. It doesn't need to be super, super extravagant. If you want to go a simple route, go a simple route. There are plenty of potters I've interviewed where their pottery is pretty simple in design, but it excites them and they like making that pottery. And that is fine. That is their voice. And that can be your voice
