Why does this matter. Well this matters because sometimes their are things that we really don't like to make, but when we are able to practice things that we don't like than we can grow as a potter and get new ideas to incorporate into our voice

In this episode, I'm going to be talking about making things that you don't necessarily like to make and why it's important to discovering your own voice with your pottery.

You see, I just had a really great interview with Gabs Conway. And in this interview, one of the last things that she was saying was that she didn't like making teapots in college because in college she had an assignment to make a teapot and she had to make a lot of teapots.

But she decided then and there that what she was going to do was that she was going to get really good at making teapots.

Speaker
And she was just gonna get good at that. She was gonna make the teapots even though she didn't like making teapots. And she still doesn't like making teapots today. But let me tell you what this did do for her pottery and for her sculptures.

You see, when she was making these teapots, she may not have been that good at first to be able to make those teapots.

Embracing Challenges for Skill Development

But what she did was she kept at it and she kept on adding to those skills of being able to make something and she would put her own spin on it. She would always try to do something else to make it her own. And she would keep on working at it and working at it and working at it.

And that's what we need to do in order to find our voice, but we also need to work on the necessary skills in order to build that voice. Sometimes we don't have the skills necessary in order to find our voice, to find whatever it is that we're trying to achieve. That's why we have to work on the things that we don't necessarily like to make in order to pursue this finding your voice further.

And who knows, maybe if you work on what you are working on right now, maybe it'll lead to something, some new ideas down the road so that you are able to find your voice down the road. You are able to make things that you actually like to make.
00:02:18
Speaker
And that's why I think it's really important to get uncomfortable, get uncomfortable in making things that you don't like to make and to make them anyways. You don't have to make them forever. Just make them so that your skills can evolve a little bit. Your skills are going to be evolving each time you are doing something that is uncomfortable, that is not what you like to make. But you make it anyway so that you your skills are growing necessary so that when you do find your voice,

and you find something that you like to make, then your skills are gonna be right there with what you're envisioning for what your voice wants, you want to make.

That's why it's important to work on those skills and to do stuff that you don't like every once in a while. You have to do it all the time. Just try to find things that you don't like to make and try to make them anywhere, anyway, and try to put your own spin on it so that you are actually working on those skills and you're working towards finding your voice.
