Finding Your Unique Pottery Voice

Speaker
What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about looking in a different area, different spot to find your voice.
Ben Carter's Cultural Exploration
00:00:27
Speaker
You see, I just had a really, really great conversation with Ben Carter. I learned so much from this episode. But basically one of the things that he said was that when he was in college, he used to look at
00:00:43
Speaker
I want to say it was Peruvian or Persian. It was Persian pottery. And he liked that a lot. So he would kind of try to make it his own. He would try to use that culture and use it for himself. But then one day his his professor came up to him and she said that it's fine that you're making that pottery.
00:01:06
Speaker
But in a subtle way, she pretty much told him that it's not his culture and that he should be looking elsewhere to find his voice.
Developing a Unique Style through Heritage
00:01:17
Speaker
That led him down the road to working towards his Appalachian and quilting heritage that he grew up with. And that's how he found his voice and that's how his voice began to develop because he started looking in a different place.
00:01:33
Speaker
You see, you may have things that you really like to make with your pottery and you are trying to mimic or model other potters or other cultures that you see. But you see sometimes that voice isn't truly our own because we're just kind of modeling and copying other people.
Broadening Creative Exploration
00:01:51
Speaker
Sometimes we have to look in just a little bit of a different area. Just maybe turn your head just a little bit more and look at the broader picture. You see sometimes we get so focused on one thing that we forget there's so many things out there. You know we get tunnel vision of what our pottery, what we want our pottery to look like. We think that because that is something that we really like
00:02:16
Speaker
that we should be trying to incorporate into our own pottery, which is completely fine. I teach you that all the time that you must start with what you like to make in order to find your voice.
00:02:26
Speaker
But if you are too focused on just that one thing and you're getting tunnel vision, you're missing so many other things that can help you improve your pottery and make your pottery look that much better.
New Perspectives in Pottery
00:02:38
Speaker
I'm telling you this again. How can you look in just a little bit of a different angle or a different way or different place to help you come up with new ideas and start having your own voice? You see, if you're looking at other people's cultures and your other people's potteries,
00:02:56
Speaker
It's completely fine if you do that. You're gonna get a lot of ideas that way. But if you look at things that relate more to yourself, then your voice is gonna grow so much and you're gonna be able to find your voice that much better and your pottery is gonna look that much better because you're simply looking in a different direction. You don't have to look at the same exact spot every single time. Even if you like the pottery that you're making or somebody else is making,
00:03:24
Speaker
Try looking in a different area of somewhere else that you think that you like. So you can get a new perspective on things. If you get a new perspective on things in your pottery, you're going to grow so much.
