What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about how you should be learning the rules of pottery and then you need to break them. You need to break it in half. You need to start doing your own thing. I had a really great conversation with Mandy Henry and

In this conversation, we were talking about what advice would you give to someone trying to find their own unique voice? And she explained to me is that every potter needs to learn the rules of pottery, and then you'd need to break them. And when she said that, I thought that was really, really, really profound.
Finding Personal Pottery Techniques

You see, you do need to learn the rules of pottery. There are certain rules that you need to learn for pottery,

Speaker
to help you progress with your skills to help you to gain the basic knowledge of things around pottery. But then once you have that basic knowledge around pottery and the things that you are trying to create.

Speaker
Go break them. Go shatter them. Go throw the glass on the ground. Go break every single rule. Go break it. And the reason why it is important to break the rules after you have learned them, and I know a lot of you probably saying like, why should I break the rules if I just learned them? Well, you break the rules to find an easier way to make pottery for yourself, to find something that is just going to stick for you.
Nick's Journey to a Unique Style

Because while you were learning these rules, oftentimes what could have happened was you were taught something. And because you were taught something, you stuck with that thing and you stuck it out because.
00:02:20
Speaker
That's what you knew what was working somebody else is doing that thing. And it was working for them. So you kept on doing it. But I bet you along the way, while you were learning that skill, maybe it was wheel throwing, hand building, sculpture, whatever it was, while you were learning that skill, you noticed that what they were doing for themselves, it was not working for you. I know I felt that way when I was first learning how to throw. My teacher taught us how to throw a certain way, use a sponge, you know, and center a certain way.
00:02:49
Speaker
but that was not working for me. Like I learned it, but once I broke out of that, that's when I started making progress for myself. I started centering a completely different

way. I started throwing a completely different way as well. Once I broke that, the things that I learned, everything became so much easier because I found something that worked for me. That's why you need to learn the rules,
00:03:17
Speaker
but then break them. You must get comfortable with breaking those rules in pottery. You have to find ways to make pottery easier for yourself, more efficient, more fun, just for you. Because what works for somebody else may not work for you in pottery. That's why it's really important to break those rules. Go throw it on the ground, break the glass. Go break the rules for pottery. Not only that, it's also gonna help you discover your own unique voice as well. Because like I said, what somebody else is doing may not work for you.
00:03:48
Speaker
And if you really like hand building and you kind of like what somebody else is making, but you try it and it just doesn't really soothe your soul when you are trying with somebody else making.
00:04:03
Speaker
What if you broke those rules and get something completely different? Could you imagine what that would do for your pottery? What that would do to your voice? That's why it's really important to break those rules. Learn the rules and then break the rules. And I hope this brought you some value. I'll see you guys next
