Importance of Frequent Pottery Practice for Skill Development

What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you should be making as much as you can and as often as you can to find your voice and to make the pottery that you truly want to make.

You see, I just had a really great conversation with Emily Gabriel. And the very first thing that she told me in this interview was that in order to make the best possible product that you can, you should be making as much as you can and as often as you can. And while she's not the first person to tell me that, this one forever just clicked. You just hear it enough and you hear it enough and you just finally something clicks.
00:01:29

and she is absolutely right and all the other potters that I've interviewed that have said that are absolutely right absolutely right with this 100% and I agree 100% with this that you should be making as much as you can and as often as you can to be able to find your voice to be able to make pottery that is truly great
Challenges and Solutions in Consistent Pottery Practice
00:01:49
Speaker
You see, if you're not able to make pottery all that often or you are very inconsistent with it, like let's say maybe you have a job so it prevents you from making pottery all the time, then what's gonna happen is it's gonna take you a lot longer to actually find your voice. It's gonna take you a lot longer to actually make the pottery that you wanna make with your pottery. So that's why it's really important to make as much as you can. There's a quote by
00:02:18
Speaker
Tony Robbins that I think he got from Jim Rohn is basically he says, repetition is the mother of skill. And it's so true. The more you you are doing repetitions with your pod, repetitions with trying new things out, the more you're going to find your voice, the more you're going to learn, the more you are going to evolve your voice even further. And that's why it's really important to make as much as you can as often as you can.
00:02:43
Speaker
Because the more you practice, the more you are going to learn, the more you're going to grow as a pottery, the more you're going to find your voice faster as well. And that's why it's really important.
Strategies to Ensure Consistent Pottery Practice
00:02:53
Speaker
But how do you make time to actually, you know, get into the studio and make stuff with your pottery? Well, there's a couple of tips that I think could help you that I feel like they helped me. So I think they could help you as well. Number one is
00:03:12
Speaker
trying to just show up into studio and just start making things. Because sometimes the hardest thing about actually trying to make pottery is showing up and actually trying to make it. That's probably the hardest thing is just to show up and actually try to make the pottery. I know I have those days, a lot of those days, where I was like, I don't wanna make the pottery, but I try to force myself almost to go into the studio, into the studio so that I can practice, so that I can start doing stuff
00:03:42
Speaker
with my pottery to make my voice come to life. And that those are the moments when you just have to show up, right, you just have to show up even though you don't want to. I'll give you another example. Have you ever been for a job, maybe you wake up early in the morning, the job, I'd say 530. And you know, you don't want to go to your job. But you know, this is what's paying your bills. So you
Benefits of Consistent Practice and Scheduling in Pottery
00:04:05
Speaker
Heave yourself out of bed and you end up doing it anyways to make those bills, support your family to continue making pottery, right? It's the same thing. If you can just heave yourself into that studio so that you can just start practicing, then you're going to go a lot further. You're going to end up getting those repetitions in simply just by showing up and start practicing. So the second tip that I think can really help you is not worrying about how long you make pottery.
00:04:32
Speaker
but just showing up and 10 minutes is really all it takes. 10 minutes of daily practice is really, really helpful to start finding your own voice because it's that showing up again and it's just that practice that you're putting in to help your pottery grow and help your voice show up. Finally, the last tip is if you have a job or maybe you're a parent or whatever is to
00:04:59
Speaker
Schedule out days where you are blocking out time where you are only making pottery, right? So maybe it's an hour, maybe a two. So maybe you get home at 3 30 p.m. And normally you would go out and you'd go rest, but you have it in your schedule that you are going to make pottery right when you get home or maybe you get changed first, whatever. And then from 3 45 to
00:05:26
Speaker
to 445 and that's the time for yourself and you were just making pottery, right? And you don't have to do it every day, but it's important to be intentional about this, be intentional about when you are going to go out into the studio and actually practice making pottery, go out and make pottery, go out and try new things, go out and just do different things for your pottery. You have to be intentional about it because if you aren't intentional about it, then it's never going to happen. Then you are just going to continue
00:05:52
Speaker
doing the same things over and over again. So you have to be intentional about this, otherwise it won't happen. You won't find your voice, you won't make part of that you truly like, and you won't even be able to sell your pottery if that's what you want. So you have to be intentional about showing up and actually trying to make pottery.
