Speaker: Can we get a clean one where Jiggy's not dragging a crate chair across the room? Welcome to the podcast. Get in the podcast, Sinji. This is Parentheses Capital, not a Rewatch.
Speaker: I'm Charles Chapters, and as always, with me, Sunny. As always, for our first introductory Session Zero podcast, welcome to the premiere Neon Genesis Evangelion Rewatch podcast done by, because yes, we do need more podcasts in the world. I'm Sonny, joined by my Eva crewmates. I wish you wouldn't use my whole name there, buddy.
Speaker: Who lives at what street?
Speaker: I thought this was an assassination coordinates podcast. right. And Jeggy, no last name given. Yo, what's up? It's me. It's me. It's Quaggler the IV. Coming back at you. How's it going?
Speaker: That sultry voice you heard at the beginning was ah Charles from from Charles Chapters. Yeah, he's a big time. And definitely not any wanted posters. I cannot stress this enough. And we are being brought to you by Taylor Farms. Taylor Farms.
Speaker: Shit it out. Do it. Taylor Farms, we are not guilty. Okay, so as this is session zero, are we are watching the premiere 90s mech anime that is not...
Speaker: Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion. We are the hope through this podcast is we will watch we will watchch not only the shows, but eventually get our way to the end of Evangelion movie, and then also explore the Rebuild series. Now, if this is your first time listening to us, we'd say, why? Why are you doing this to yourselves? For those of you in the know, Neon Genesis Evangelion was a um Are you trying to throw it to me for an introduction where I read the blurb about the animes? That would be a great idea. There we go.
Speaker: yeah No last name given. Yeah, redacted. I can't ask for this now. ah Evangelion, Neon Genesis Evangelion, ran for 26 episodes, a single season in 1995, 1996, directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Studio Gainax.
Speaker: It follows 14-year-old Shinji, who's reconnecting with his estranged father, by by being inducted into a paramilitary organization known as NERV, which point he is selected to pilot a giant mech, Evangelion in this case, ah and fight angels, giant monsters that are invading the city for unknown reasons.
Speaker: Is like Tokyo 2 or something? Yes, we do not talk about what happened to Tokyo's one and two. They are in fact in Tokyo three. Okay.
Speaker: I remember that. It is wild that you could sum up the plot that succinctly, and also that has so little bearing on what the show actually is. i explained nothing and also the entire thing. I think that's a good one.
Speaker: Which really goes into how absolutely insane of a show this is. i like if if this If you have no background of Neogenesis Evangelion, then but Buckle up, sailor, which are analogies that don't go together, but but much like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Yeah, which actually we should be saying right now How familiar are you with the show?
Speaker: Yes, Sonny. You put this together. You got to tell us secrets. OK, well.
Speaker: So I am a fairly late comer to Eva. That's what she said. hill um which is the colloquial shorthand of Genesis.
Speaker: i I came to it in I want to say 2016, 2017. And i distinctly remember because I was at this time, I was going to the library a fair amount. And the library had ah a really good foreign film anime section. I got I watched all of Samurai Champloo there. I watched all the cowboy bebops before I owned them. And i saw the first volume of Eva and i had heard about it. I knew some things about it, that it was weird, that it was depressing, that it didn't actually get a finale until like 10 years after the finale. They had the entire selection there.
Speaker: and i rented disc by disc by disc. Um, to finish the entire run of the show. And afterwards, I was flabbergasted.
Speaker: And I had known about Eva. I think the most distinct memory I have of it was our buddy who will not be on the pod, Justin, saying that Pacific Rim was a proof of concept that an Eva movie could work. So I knew there were monsters. I knew that they were robots. I knew that there was depression.
Speaker: And I knew that it was considered like one of the best series. And that's what I went into um when I started watching. That's ah it's so interesting. I never thought about how Pacific Rim could be a film adaptation or at least how, you know, the kaiju genre can intersect with this, at least in filmmaking.
Speaker: Yeah, me either. I was actually thinking to myself, how absolutely epic would it be if we got a Neon Genesis Evangelion movie in the form of Pacific Rim? Yeah, I'm i'm sitting here looking at the list of EVA films and it is daunting. It looks like the first film, ah Death and Rebirth, came out in yeah March 97 because of fan backlash with the series finale, which is putting the cart a little bit ahead of the horse. Yeah.
Speaker: But I'll go ahead and talk little about my background. I have a deeper, it's been a very long time for me. I don't think I've watched these movies or the the show since high school, really. um Back in North Carolina, I, you know, being the eminently cool guy in Japanese class and Japanese club and hanging out with a lot of um anime fans,
Speaker: a a huge thing at the time was them ah sharing around actual VHS imports from like Suncoast. And I had a friend whose personality was ah to to say that this man idolized Shinji's dad, I believe, should be informative enough to tell you about the kind of guy Brent was. Oh, what a shitty guy. Yeah.
Speaker: And to say that he just like loved to do the glasses thing. um ah some At some point, it's the glasses thing. The glasses thing. OK, so throughout the anime, we will spot Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father, a number of times just kind of adjusting his glasses by putting one finger right up on the bridge of his nose on the bridge and then doing the ever classic anime. They are just completely whitewashed out. thing And fold his fingers together. And yep fold his fingers together. That's another huge one. um
Speaker: But that was it. And so, you know, he being one of the more technically savvy of us was our source for, let's say, AVI files in a DivX format on CDs or burn CDs. So I think I got drip fed few episodes at a time.
Speaker: to go watch on the family computer. um So to say that I haven't seen these probably in their intended format is is an understatement. just realized I think all of this took place right before 9-11. I can't believe I did that.
Speaker: Well. Sorry, buddy. It's my bad. The year was 2003.
Speaker: I was at my best friend's house in his grandmother's basement where his cousin Joe lived. This feels like you're about to commit to a crime. Yeah, this sounds like... The crime...
Speaker: the crime was the fact that I had my brain exploded in the back of a wall when I was just we lad watching the most crazy and heinous unfolding of melodrama and depression that I could have ever learned to comprehend at such an age. You you would have been at middle school?
Speaker: I was in middle school in like 2003 something. three or something
Speaker: And I would go over to their house and he would pop a VHS in and we would just watch it. I definitely watched it out of order and caught just random ah episodes from time to time when I would go over there.
Speaker: But, you know, I honestly id write watch this show. It really isn't because it's it's it's really not linear until like the last four or five episodes. And to be quite frank, at that time, i was heavily influenced under the devil's lettuce.
Speaker: And so I would go over there and just get straight up for 20 blazed it and then watch it. So I actually didn't remember. Pretty much anything other than the fact that I had severe chronic depression after I watched it for the rest of my life.
Speaker: um It was definitely the catalyst to some of the mental disorders that I suffer from today. But recently i did rewatch it in continuous continuity.
Speaker: From start to finish for the first time because I was like, you know what? I actually have no idea um what order I'm supposed to watch this in and what the whole story tells me. So let me give it a fresh, sober look.
Speaker: And that was probably three months ago. OK. Oh, wow. That's recent. So you're you're you're doing you're doing doobies.
Speaker: You were watching this movie asynchronously. ah in middle school. I feel like that's a, yeah, it is a perfect storm for creating lifelong mental illness.
Speaker: It It did. it did i' not even joking. I was such a, I was such a jovial kid. And then after that, it was like, I remember watching those final episodes and and thinking to myself that I completely understood it and how absolutely terrible life was after that.
Speaker: And also you were the only one who understood it. And that was was why you were a special boy and just filled with sexual perversions. i I also do feel that maybe the only worst thing that we can hear now is if Jakey has only ever seen this over people's shoulders on airplanes while making cross-country flights. I watched this on my iPod mini. Yeah, I watched it on my iPod mini. um wow But it was water it had water damage, so the screen was all messed up. Yeah, half of the screen was dead pixels.
Speaker: And it was dubbed. but But not by the people who dubbed it. God, I miss yeah an Armenian dub. Crazy style. No, I watched, Sonny introduced me to this because it was just like on when I went over to his place and i was like, but so I didn't watch, start watching anime till I was like, like 20.
Speaker: Okay. three kids Crazy. but I wouldn't have thought. And you've known Sonny a long time, right? yeah I'm not, um um I think maybe the day I was born, he might have been there, but, you know, it's hard to say. I wasn't there. So, so ah yeah, I think I was into Cowboy Bebop. I was into Samurai Champloo just because it was on Adult Swim and they like fucked it with adults. Oh, can we curse on this?
Speaker: ah Yeah, we might get demonetized, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. All right. ah We can do all the curses. I'm the one editing it, so I'm going to be F'd with Adult Swim. um And Samurai Champloo was awesome. And then um so that's when I got into anime. And then Sonny had like...
Speaker: ah Evangelion on and i was like, oh this is crazy. So that's how I got into it. And then i watched it and then i rewatched it when it came out on Netflix.
Speaker: So that's my last kind of foray, except I did watch. um One hour notice with ah one Robbie Williams.
Speaker: I am so glad you got – you're bringing this up because I feel like if we didn't get through, if no one had brought up the the absolute insanity that is – Where? The Eva cameo.
Speaker: Wait, so what is it? Evangelion. I'm sorry. That's ah how Robin Williams. Oh, oh, one hour photo. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my God. What a beautiful movie.
Speaker: So a little kid is buying a, ah an angel. yeah He's like, And Robin was just like, oh, what does this guy do? And it's like, oh, you know, he he kills bad guys. He's like an angel. And and it's like, oh where's this from?
Speaker: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Speaker: And that's my first introduction to it. Because my friend, reese would be like, he would just reference that all the time.
Speaker: The worst great movie, by the way, about that for me is knowing that Robin Williams was a huge fan and absolutely did that on purpose. It diabolical that this man is doing that to us from beyond the grave. I horrifying lore drop. I'll see if I can find it um I do have that action figure.
Speaker: Yeah, you should just like. throw up a just a little hotkey for just Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Speaker: Oh, get it on the soundboard? That's right. Yeah. Yeah, just throw it on the soundboard. I will see if I can find and clip that. that is that is I hate that a huge part of one of my old roommate's quotes um when he would get drunk and weird um is he would just scream at people line from that movie.
Speaker: And I don't know if you guys remember the movie well enough to think about what line he might have screamed. If you got any guesses, I'll give you a second.
Speaker: No, I'm good. Don't look at the camera. Look at each other.
Speaker: Yes. Oh, God. Oh, no. yeah Should we just pivot to a one hour photo podcast?
Speaker: No, that's going to be a bonus episode. fact That's behind the paywall. I was thinking about how hard and I've got it right here with me.
Speaker: um The interstitials on Adult Swim used to go because I got ah Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy based entirely off of the recommendation that came on an interstitial for Trigun.
Speaker: Dude, they were the best. Toonami? Toonami, bro. that was tsunami That was where it was at, yo. Absolutely. Inuyasha, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, you name it. They had it, man. That was like... Gundam. I would stay up and watch all of those shows, man Space Coast, Coast to Coast.
Speaker: Yeah, Brock. I...
Speaker: i I know that Cartoon Network has brought Toonami back, but I feel like i I'm of two minds of it. i think there's so many new, like there's not the segregation that existed when we were younger about like, you know,
Speaker: Yeah, I don't think segregation exists anymore. I'm glad they solved that one. That was that was rough. That's a real thing. That one that one's done. So, you know, move on, guys. But like segregation is cringe.
Speaker: Dude, segregation is so cringe. And I'm glad you said it and you're so brave for saying it. You're you're so brave. But the like the segregation that existed for people who were getting, especially in the early 90s, for people who were like like, anime was this cool new thing, but it was also like something that not a lot of people, like you couldn't get access to it. It was very hard.
Speaker: sharing the like, you know, bootleg VHSs. Or I remember like getting a catalog and just like, oh, I want to watch these things. And like going in having to order it. Because I remember like my first anime ah Beyond Akira that I had caught flipping through channels one time was like my neighbor giving me a couple of Dragon Ball VHSs and watching watching those and going like, what is this?
Speaker: Dude, I'm not even going to lie. When I was over at my friend's house, the first time he put Evangelion, I was thinking to myself, are we about to watch a porno? Because I was at that age where a lot of my friends would steal their parents' porno and then watch it together. And I was never about that, especially because my friend's cousin, when I was like 12 or 11, was like 20.
Speaker: So i he he pops in this VHS and I just thought to myself like, oh man, Joe, you were so cool, dude. Please don't do this.
Speaker: Don't groom me, please. And then on top of the head. Mind-blowing like mecha anime ever. Exactly. And the thing is, it's just like in the way that the show progresses, it it catches you off guard. And what it does is it grooms you.
Speaker: it grooms you to thinking that this is a mecha kaiju fighting show and then becomes something so much more. Yeah, it gets really horny and depressing.
Speaker: It gets semi-horny. There's a section that gets pretty horny, and then after that, it' it just gets... When we get there, I'm real curious to know. Because, again, like I said, I haven't seen... it's been ah probably 25 years since I've watched Eva. Forever? Forever.
Speaker: it It, forever, ever, forever, ever, ever, ever, ever. It vacillates between, you know, horniness and then actually sex and is terrible and you should feel bad about everything you've ever thought about.
Speaker: Well, think about it, right? In severe trauma situations, like hypersexuality is a symptom that comes out of that. And often with hypersexuality, you also get guilt, ah you know, about your hypersexuality because of like, you know, ah whether you have a porn addiction or you're doing risky things, like there's always this like ebb and flow of hypersexuality and guilt of what you're doing about it. And like that show, even Eva shows just kind of like that in its own way I feel like are yeah I mean that's basically Masato's character are you saying that we should make a special segment for every episode where Sunny has to diagnose the people on screen yes horny or depressed a
Speaker: a lot of people don't like to talk about it but those are the two mental states but That'll just be the scale. We'll just rank our like characters on the scale. Like, all right.
Speaker: So on the scale of horny or depressed, like it's a, it's a cynic base. Yeah. But so Toonami at that time was a lot of people's was like, Hey, this is something sort of subversive and something that, because it aired late at night. And it was this block on the weekends that, you know, to borrow that, I think you should leave sketch. It was like,
Speaker: this is the adults part of the tour. Yeah. like And you were no kids allowed not were not prepared for what is going to happen. And that's when a lot of people got, you know, cowboy bebop pilled samurai shampoo pilled and like the later seasons of Gundam,
Speaker: and Eva was this just like this thing that was cool, but at the same time got to the point where it just like, I don't know if this is cool anymore or just deep. And people like kids these days, because no one wants to work. We all agree on that. But kids these have so much, like they're not, like anime is just like, you know every single thing is anime influenced. They got Avatar, they got any, like,
Speaker: Any cartoon is going to have like the anime like influence you can see in it. And we don't have the same level of like, oh, this is something sort of secret. And maybe you yeah you talk you talk about it with a couple of people, but not everyone. Anime back in the day used to be underground.
Speaker: Yeah, it was an underground movement. And you're right. You it's not something you would talk to your friends about. And in fact, if you were open about watching anime, that would open you up for an ass whooping, dude.
Speaker: Like be people would beat you up because they thought that was gay or they didn't understand it or they would make fun of you or ridicule you or you would be an outcast and ostracized. Like back in the day, dude, anime like.
Speaker: Like you had to be a hardcore anime fan to actually admit and be open that you're watching anime. I myself was a closet anime fan because I was into sports. I did softball and basketball and football and you know like I hung out with a bunch of different people and I was I never openly talked about the anime that I watched like that was my dirty little secret i'd be in my room watching you know like i said inuyasha try gun cowboy b-pop but have no one to talk to about it other than this guy who's 12 years older than me and we would talk about anime for freaking hours man you know charles in a lot of ways think your experience with anime really mirrored my experience with my christian faith and how go on i've been endlessly persecuted
Speaker: for being a massive Jesus freak. And what would you, what would people do if they said I was a Jesus freak? You know, like what would people do if they found out it's true? I don't even care if you label man Jesus freak.
Speaker: I don't care people know. I'm a Jesus freak. I'll say it. Yeah, I'll say it. No, I was just thinking like... I love our savior. He's a cool guy. And i listen, I think it's my job as the whitest person on this panel to really explain persecution. Holy fuck, you're right. yeah um And really, I've been victimized all night.
Speaker: that but That is why we need Doug, because right now we only have two and a half white people. Is it even a podcast if there's not three white people on it? This podcast is brought to you by the brave Mujedin fighters known as Riley. um i ah yeah I think the accessibility of it is is a huge one, right? And I – well, I never really had – that exact, you know, experience you did, Charles, with being persecuted again for for anime liking. cause I think i I've always had this pathological need to be liked. So I fell in with anime fans and they were always intensely welcoming. But then the division still existed between like, oh, gosh, I can't even remember. There was always these layers like I still haven't been
Speaker: What what? Those were coming out, well, One Piece has been out forever. I remember catching on Torrance the first 25-ish episodes of Bleach when it came out, but I really very quickly couldn't keep up with it. Yeah, way. Similarly with Naruto. I mean, no way. It's so hard to keep up with any sort of anime.
Speaker: Especially those prolific shonen ones that just That's I bringing up. Like One Piece and Naruto. I do want Bleach in there. Yeah. Dragon Ball. It's just like... I do like the really tight... always loved self-contained animes, right? That's why I loved, like, Cowboy Bebop. You have a set number of episodes. The story starts and finishes...
Speaker: Like you have you have a a beginning ah ah and a conclusion and Eva is right there with it. Although there's been like 15 different iterations since the show launched, it still is just a self-contained anime. You know what I mean? You either die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain.
Speaker: yeah It has a start, it has an end, and maybe that end changes a little bit. yeah through iterations i am but at least it has a certain end i like the ones that are contained i like a tight story um i was just thinking i need to re-watch uh you know you brought up one of the gundams earlier but gundam 8th ms team um is is real short and is a really good war story but it's it's great now we're on the list i said great now we're on the list you said gundam ms team ms 18.
Speaker: A eight, eight yeah oh eight MS team, mobile suit team. MS-13. The most dangerous game. That Charles needs to watch. There's a bunch of great, i mean, Gundam's great. And that's, I think, that's the, that's the difference between like a franchise and a series, right? Like every piece of Gundam media is different.
Speaker: um But they do have that sort of yeah commonality. But sometimes they have like stuff that like intertwines and it's like, Oh, hey, man, the Barbados is here. yeah Yeah, and sometimes the bad guys become the good guys and the good guys become the bad guys, depending on which like version of the story you're watching.
Speaker: I feel like that brings up an interesting thing about Eva. I also enjoy the fact that we have pronounced Evangelion, Evangelion, about four or five different ways now, and I ah really hope that I think that we can continue putting the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllable. But...
Speaker: Eva the story, the series, is so much different than Eva the franchise. Because we were talking about the horny and depression scale. and But there are people like, you know, you can go and buy your Shorin models of Asuka or Rey.
Speaker: And if you watch the show, you're just like... Oh, oh no They're canonically 14 for reasons. And I feel bad about this. Meanwhile, i don't know if you guys have seen it, but I have definitely seen the Asuka bug traveling around. That is a bright red bug that is covered in Asuka stickers and also has Asuka as a license plate.
Speaker: And like, you'll see people wearing hoodies or building models and like, the message of the series is so much different than the message of the franchise. Like almost, I wonder how Anno feels sometimes about the franchise that's been built off of something that is arguably about a man trying to figure things out at maybe the most depressed he's ever been in his life.
Speaker: Yeah. I think that's the the secret though, you know, they'll goon to anything. What's my secret, Cap? That's my secret cap. I'm always gooning. I'm always gooning. That's why he had to go to Sarkar for whatever reason.
Speaker: Yeah. So we we don't exactly at the beginning, we don't exactly know. we don't exactly know what the goal. What's Senji's dad's name? ah Gendo Ikari.
Speaker: Ikari. OK, we don't exactly know what his goals are and for Nerve. We just know that they're trying to keep Tokyo three, i guess, safe.
Speaker: So but safe from who, Quaglor? Yeah, we we don't know, but they're trying to keep them safe. So
Speaker: I think that's probably where we start, right? Like that is where we start. We quite literally you. You've received a call from your father.
Speaker: It's time to come home. I'm interested in reconnecting. Hey, kid, come home. I know I haven't fathered you in 17 years or whatever.
Speaker: You were pretty close with your mom, right? That's going to get him later on. just show up. Hey,
Speaker: So put it on a big mech suit or whatever. It's like, yeah, sure. up Hey, get in here. Get in this podcast, buddy. And that's what's going to happen next week. We're going to have Shinji. Get in this podcast.
Speaker: ah Shinji, we're going to get hit Shinji on the podcast. He's going explain everything. Don't worry. It's not a rewatch. Yeah. No, i've I thought it wasn't. And then I find out that we've all seen it.
Speaker: That makes it even funnier. have clue what's going to happen to you. i don't, I truly don't know if I've ever actually watched every episode. I do know that I probably watched most episodes. And then my ex-girlfriend went to Japan and brought me back a, what can best be described as a doujinshi. that does prominently feature multiple characters, really two, who will be introduced to much later in the series, unfortunately. um
Speaker: And if I can dig that up, I will gladly ah ah bring it to Sonny's for discussion. But um yeah, what a treat. The sacred text. Right? Doug has not seen Eva.
Speaker: Right. doug has not seen eva So we've got to pin him down on two fronts. We apparently got to do whiteness test. We've first got figure out he is. Yeah. I've got to find out if we can still be friends.
Speaker: Or if, you know, this... Jesus Christ. um ah Redacted. ah So we get dug in here. I mean, i think that's the plan.
Speaker: Yeah. And... And get you a goddamn fucking microphone, Sonny! Yeah, I know. tu I keep touching the mic and it's screwing everything up. I'm sorry, I'll kill myself later. I won't get Sonny on microphone. Don't worry about What do we want to think? are our thoughts about Eva's legacy?
Speaker: And the fandom culture around it? Legacy's a big one, right? Someone... i was watching an interview this weekend. I think it was Odyssey promo stuff.
Speaker: And i think it was like... ah Tom Holland hasn't seen the Matrix. And Matt Damon was so excited about that because, you know, he's like, oh, you get to experience it for the first time.
Speaker: but then he sort of second guesses it and goes, um I actually but don't know if you'd be impressed by it. It's been so referenced and so utilized at this point that all the groundbreaking stuff is old hat now.
Speaker: That's a great... Because, you know, it was so groundbreaking when it happened that even Anno, like, he... It took him over a decade.
Speaker: I think, like, 12, 15 years, I'll have to check, to make these rebuild movies that he was working on because he didn't want to repeat himself. And I think he threaded that needle, like, pretty well,
Speaker: But the desire to like, because everyone has either like seen it or they know something about it. Even the title of the pod is, you know, from a meme about getting the robot, which like if we look at Shinji as a character, like there is so many reasons for him to never get into the robot.
Speaker: But also like there's this like the fandom is like, hey, just hey, shut up about all your feelings. Hey, get in the robot and go fight something because it's cool. So maybe really it's a little bit about social commentary, right? Like it's holding a mirror up to us and saying, listen, as even though I'm coming up with this story, I'm not the one making some Shinji get in this robot. You are.
Speaker: You're the one who continues to watch. You're the one who's looking at this. You're the one who's interested. He's getting in the robot for you. All you have to do is turn this off and it's over. And we don't. We keep watching.
Speaker: Oh, I think the meta element of Eva cannot be overstated. There are there are so many themes that, like you know, it it's it's fifth dimensional chess.
Speaker: Or, you know, at this point, maybe we're gilding the lily to talk about the genius of it. Or... Because there's there's so much stuff thrown at you that it's it's hard to distinguish what is what is purposeful and what is a happy accent. Because as as Brock talked about his firm and strong Christian faith, um that you know even the name Neon gene Genesis Evangelion is steeped in Christian dogma. And then you when you watch it, there's so many Christian images going on from Misato's cross necklace to like the attacks that they do that are crosses, the Spear of Longinus.
Speaker: The kaiju are called angels. Yep. Kaijus are called angels. ah but But the idea of like the multiple impacts being these apocalyptic events...
Speaker: And then when you read interviews, he's like, yeah, I'm not Christian. I just thought it was cool. The imagery is pretty cool. The tree of Sephiroth in the intro, that intro song. It's 40 minutes and we've not talked about the intro song.
Speaker: It hits. It still hits. me ba bam ba but ba ba ba ba bam but man See, here's the thing that I love about and hate about my brain is, okay, so I've seen this several times, like throughout the years of the time that I first seen it to just recently in the past couple of months when I watched it.
Speaker: Like I've seen it peppered in throughout my life. I'm very familiar with it. And yet I can recall almost nothing about it. There's like...
Speaker: a handful of scenes that I can remember about about Eva and other than that every time I watch it it's like a fresh rewatch you're ready for an eight minute elevator watch it is not the most thing I remember because I and it's because every time I hear it in another anime I'm like man Evangelion is the sound of June bugs Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Ah, the circadans. That is like ingrained in my brain. Every time I hear it, all I think about is Evangelion. I'm like, guys, don't really get those up here, huh? Hey, no, dude.
Speaker: That's a fair point. I go back east. I know I'm going to hear that the wrong time of year. Not here. And they remember you. The loons. I think. I think that may be one of my first like.
Speaker: Because I didn't even know what it was, but just the meme. Not even the meme, just like, ah hey, you know, everything is better when you put it to Cruel Angel's thesis. It's like, what the fuck are you talking about? What are you talking about?
Speaker: we might have lost Jaggy. you there? All right. and no my I got an alert saying you had problems. but The theme song is Cruel Angel's thesis.
Speaker: Yep.
Speaker: a tremendous bop. And when we get a positive review, Sonny will sing it in its entirety. Right. In the original Japanese. Yeah, you'll learn it phonetically. It's not hard.
Speaker: zo co nine no engine not there is Yeah, you got it. Okay, I have a request. I have seen it. It's been a long time, but I have enough ideas.
Speaker: Everyone else has watched it comparatively more recently. We have a real opportunity here. As we think, Doug has not seen this.
Speaker: Do we have predictions for our friend Doug's reaction to anything about this show? ah I think he's going to think Pen Pen's real cute.
Speaker: I think that it's going to be very interesting to watch him progress through the entire series because i have a feeling he's going to think, oh, yeah, man, this is a pretty cool mech kaiju fighting show. I like the animations and the music's pretty awesome.
Speaker: And then as the show goes on, I think we're going to hear the words, what the fuck, more and more often. I think he's going to see it and then try to bring about Third Impact.
Speaker: Loki, he might stop watching it.
Speaker: Loki, he might die. ah You're going to go over to his house, backyard. Oops, that's an Eva. Oops, all Evas. I mean, he's... Listen, I do now. I've said it. I've manifested it. I am worried. He he can work him he can work a mill.
Speaker: He's got a lot of ambiguous parts that might be for a Mecca. Ha ha! Oh, no. he might. he might. though This might be the missing piece for him building a full size mecca and taking over the city. You know what? there I hope he does.
Speaker: There is a deep like don't trust the government plot line running through. a lot of the series and it's like, oh you can only save the world by gruff and determination and your friends and a little help from your parents. And your parents are big brother, the government.
Speaker: Can we put Anchorage 2 in Girdwood? Hey, why is this? thought it already was. Why is the sea blood red?
Speaker: Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.
Speaker: Honestly, I am... i my be The series is amazing. last two episodes are wild. And then End of Evangelion is great. But I am most excited to go through the rebuild movies. Because not ah i the the ultimate... I've seen the final rebuild movie twice in theaters.
Speaker: And there is just something so audacious about it that watching it... It's one of the... It's a movie that I started immediately dissecting for the next three hours after I watched it and was constantly torn between this is the most pretentious bullshit I've ever seen and genius, stop movies. We've peaked. It's peak.
Speaker: yeah you You're not going to get better. i i think that's a valid reaction. I have not seen any of the movies, really. maybe bits and pieces of death and rebirth. So I at least get that to look. Which we would be, we would be bereft and not mentioning. Apparently it's the 30 year anniversary of Eva and they are playing the movies, several of the movies at theaters. I'm planning on catching. yeah what are the odds of that?
Speaker: Yeah, I'm planning on catching. Whoa. I'm planning on catching the, the end of Evangelion tomorrow at theaters because there's there's that one scene I need to see on the big screen.
Speaker: to Y'all know. Get out of here. Get out. now ah Somebody call whatever department needs to be called. Do you guys It's the Department of War now.
Speaker: The two translations for the title? Shinigami Montensi? Shinseiki Evangelion is the original Japanese, which is New Century Evangelion.
Speaker: And... Apparently you're you ready for what the I guess I I'm assuming this is Greek for what Neon Genesis Evangelion means.
Speaker: What do we got? It's gonna be bad. What do you think? What do you think of the what do you think I'm saying that the fucking title means buddy that it means like actual giant cock sucking robots?
Speaker: The literal translation for the for the title. I hate this so much.
Speaker: is Is new beginning gospel. Yeah, it's pretty hot, right Canonically, I love the gospel. No, no, no. I was just thinking this is pretty cool. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to frame it like that. It means Jared Fogle did nothing wrong? Get out of here.
Speaker: I
Speaker: wish you'd come across town. Say it to my face that he's a monster. we do have to say that we do have to say that he is a friend... He is a friend of the pod, so we can't go too hard into the conspiracy theories that of what he did. Everybody listen. and This is satire. Jared Fogle is guilty. Okay, this is all satire. This is none of our beliefs.
Speaker: but All right. If Jared Fogle has a million fans, i am one of them. If he has... one fan. I'm him. If he has zero fans, yeah I have left this earth. Listen, we can't be talking about NGE and Jared Fogle at the same time, especially if we're in support of Jared Fogle. Listen,
Speaker: There's enough problems. This is a problematic movie, problematic series for enough reasons. We don't need to add the full goal into the mix. Okay. The only way this show could be problematic, and I don't remember any details about it at all, but okay.
Speaker: Does, like, I don't know, one of the guys clone his dead wife and try to fuck the child clone or something?
Speaker: ah But also going with the two names again, like you see the continuation of the, you know, use of Christian icon iconography.
Speaker: Like it's in the name. It's in the translation, even though like, hey, what are we doing with it? What's the deeper meaning here? Is there a deeper meaning or is it just cool? What what why did they name it?
Speaker: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Well, I mean, I hate to... i hate to spoil Spoiler warning. It's a bit of an apocalypse anime, buddy.
Speaker: what's what What is... Oh, Genesis, like the book of Genesis. Yeah, it's neon Genesis as in like a futuristic new, a new, a new creation.
Speaker: Yeah, new neon. And what better Adam and Eve to fall back on than two people that have what can at best be described as a somewhat complicated relationship?
Speaker: Yeah. Wait, God. This is unusable. This reveals too much of my dark knowledge of this stupid anime. This is perfect.
Speaker: I just think that he should have ended up with Kauru. Oh, come on! See, I don't know who that is. Names, don't know any of them. ah Like deep lore about how this was made and like the psychotic break that happened making it, I know it.
Speaker: But if you were to to ask me, where does this take place? I'm not quite sure. Or like what exactly happened with Adam and Eve? i I don't know, man. i get confused every time I watch it Well, first of all, we do agree that it was Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve. Exactly. Thank you.
Speaker: thats You're a brave hero for saving it. Yeah. saying what at And I think that leads us to like, guys, how are we doing this? How are we going on this journey? There are ah they're more There are multiple ways to watch it, but only a couple of them are actually practical these days because of the commodification of media and how none of us will ever own anything in about five years.
Speaker: Go on. ah ah We could always just go in together, go to Suncoast, buy a VHS copy, and we can watch it at Sunny's house.
Speaker: I think we should go watch it at Charles's friend's house. That guy seems legit. Honestly, it was absolutely epic. I i loved going over there, getting blazed and watching this show because also, you know what else we did? We we would read a bunch of National Geographic's.
Speaker: I. have you ever had a friend tell you a story where you realize about halfway through that your friends really not process the trauma he was put through as a child? Yeah, Charles, all of this sounds like you're about to admit horrible crimes were done to you.
Speaker: They were, but not by Joe. He was legit. Yeah, even the name Joe. Shout out Joe. Shout out Joe. Friend of the pod.
Speaker: You'll beat the charges, bud. I got you. ah He was a felon.
Speaker: Joe, just say you don't know. um i've I've managed to, they're one of my prize ah prize pieces that I own, but I managed to get my hands on the platinum collection of the DVDs.
Speaker: from way back in the day. Well, that's perfect. Is it, is it the, is it the show or is it the movies? The show. Funnily enough, I did find a copy of the movie over at a second, second and Charles, a great Virginia.
Speaker: Is it Virginia? night I think it's a chain, but I don't know how spread it is. You guys, it's on Netflix. Yeah. yeah Well, yeah, we're going to lead up. We're going to lead up to that, but.
Speaker: but i Sorry, I missed the bit. was like, I'm literally looking it No, no, no. I mean, it's there's a bunch of, ways that like, I believe it's, I do not know what edits are there. I think it could be real fun for everyone just to try to watch whatever they can find that's labeled episode one and then just see what happens.
Speaker: I'm going to go to the internet archive and then download episodes one through 26. It's basically abandonware at this point. I Juggie just punched through a door. That is how I had to watch the ah end of Eva movie. I i had to find a torrent for it because there was no way to find a affordable copy after I'd finished the series.
Speaker: But second to Charles, I found a copy of the movie that for a DVD from 1997 going for a $200.
Speaker: was going for a cool two hundred dollars crazy you wait you bought it oh no no i thought about it i figure once we trim this down and only keep what's usable we've got a really nice five minute podcast yeah that leads into a jared fogel uh truther podcast i mean that's why i'm gonna cut that bit now that i've got the setup i'm uh i'm gonna have to really uh lean into it ah It reminds me of the A.I. Pandalus. Eclip this bit. A.I. We are we are Jared Fogel.
Speaker: ah Yeah, doing to that song. okay so that's going to be our outro music is we are Jared Fogel. We we carry the sub. um We walked. Who's going to carry the sub?
Speaker: ah Listen, you carry the sub, I'll carry the Dom.
Speaker: No, but the sex joke not doing it for you, buddy. I think I think Netflix makes the most sense. I'll watch it however I can watch it. Then I'll bring in my 12 year old to be a guest and ah tell me what she thinks about the episode.
Speaker: It kind of pisses me off that it's on Netflix, so I'm just going to pirate it. There you go. That way I have it forever. i have it i' I have it on DVD. I have it on Blu-ray. i'll watch it I'll watch both of them at the same time and compare all the differences.
Speaker: and we' gonna what Are we going to do subs or dubs? The dub is pretty good. the dub is That's a good question. Sub or dub on this, man? Because i might i might go sub.
Speaker: I might go sub just to get it in its full raw Hey, are you dead? Confirmed dead. All right, we got Did you kill somebody? and Now you're dragging their body. I have no idea.
Speaker: But I think that's going to do it. Yeah. So we're going to do a plugs and sign off. Yeah, we do plugs. ah Yeah, man. ah Charles, why don't you tell our listener where he can find you?
Speaker: Listen, you can find me at Charles Chapters on all social media, Instagram and TikTok, Facebook as well. And it's been real. Hey, Sonny, where can our listener find you?
Speaker: ah Please don't, but you can find me by searching my fucking name on all socials except the ones that I have gone away from. time to cut out. Now he's dead too.
Speaker: And, Jakey, why don't you tell them where we can find you? Did I cut out? You cut way out, bud. Just shows offline now. You know what? I hadn't considered this as a risk. Wait, did cut?
Speaker: You've cut out. You're there. Hello? my My computer, for some reason, like it doesn't for some reason, my computer cuts out every single time that I don't finger the mount cursor because it doesn't view podcasting as a real activity, which honestly i get. But you can find me at all of my socials.
Speaker: ah by searching my name. Team, I think the plan is for us to watch two episodes. come commit Meet next week at the same time, same place. This has been Get in the Podcast, Sinji, not a rewatch. Thanks for joining and see you next time. Thank you, everybody, and good night. All right, bye.
