Welcome to Episode 4 of Get In The Podcast, Shinji: This is (NOT) a Rewatch!

Sonny, Charles, Brock, and Jagie are joined again by Hannah the AO3 Oracle to cover Episode 6 ("Rei II: Showdown in Tokyo-3"). Misato goes full Boss Captain, Japan goes dark, and Rei smiles.

In this episode:

Ramiel the octahedron drills toward the Geofront while conventional weapons bounce off Operation Yashima: Misato chains the entire Japanese power grid into a one-shot positronic rifle Rei's "Farewell" and the changing-room scene — who folds, who doesn't, and why First two-Eva shot, dueling beams, and the "He missed / We missed / Missed" translation gap Shinji tears open Rei's plug with his bare hands, mirroring Gendo shot-for-shot — and gets the smile Anno later said he regretted animating Horny/Depressed Axis update: Shinji 8, Rei 6, Misato 10, Kensuke 12, Pen Pen 10, Gendo [TK] Next Episode Homework: Episode 7 ("A Human Work"). Get In The Podcast, Shinji | Ep. 4: Chain The Grid, Smile For Daddy

Welcome to Episode 3 of Get In The Podcast, Shinji: This is (NOT) a Rewatch!

After a ton of technical problems and wild delays. We are uploading again

Sonny, Charles, Brock, Jagie, and Hannah cover Episode 5 ("Rei I") and start to really give up on covering 2 episodes at a time . Shinji meets someone lonelier than himself, Gendo shows an emotion for the first time on record, and we spend an alarming amount of runtime inside Rei's cursed apartment.

In this episode:

 * Unit 00 goes berserk — at Gendo, specifically. The rescue, the burned hands, and the origin of the gloves
 * A forensic tour of Rei's apartment: bloody bandages, one mini fridge, and Gendo's broken glasses as her only personal object
 * Ramiel arrives; Shinji gets boiled alive in LCL. Again.
 * Horny/Depressed Axis update: Gendo lands a controversial Zaddy 11

Next Episode Homework: Episode 6 ("Rei II")

Get In The Podcast, Shinji | Ep. 3: Bad Dad/Great Daddy

Welcome to Episode 2 of Get In The Podcast, Shinji: This is (NOT) a Rewatch!

Sonny, Brock, Charles, and Jagie are joined by special guest Hannah the Sultry Yogi to break down Episode 3 ("A Transfer" / "A Silent Phone") and Episode 4 ("Rain After Running Away" / "Hedgehog's Dilemma"). Shinji experiences the joys of VR target practice, gets unceremoniously double-tapped by a classmate, and takes a moody but colorful journey through the liminal spaces of Tokyo-3.

Along the way, we dive into the seeming absence of biological mothers, debate whether Toji suffers from the "Huge Hog Dilemma," evaluate a flying penis monster, and debate the flavor and smell of LCL.

In this episode:

 * Target Practice & Disassociation: "Center on target, pull trigger" as Shinji locks in to avoid another beating
 * Where Are the Moms? Global lack of maternal energy, parentified teenagers, and the merchandising opportunities in asking "Is Misato Mommy?"
 * The "Bondage Dick Angel" (Samshiel): Flying phallic horrors and 60-second power timers
 * The Hedgehog’s Dilemma: Shinji’s depression walkabout, movie theater dates, and non-diegetic city pop soundtracks
 * Updated Horny/Depressed pH Scale: Ranking Toji, Kensuke (a strong 11), Ritsuko, and the rest of the cast

Next Episode Homework: We keep rolling! Get ready for Episode 5 ("Rei I") and Episode 6 ("Rei II").

Get In The Podcast, Shinji | Ep. 2: The Huge Hog Dilemma / If You Can't Handle Me At My Mommy

Welcome to Episode 1 of Get In The Podcast, Shinji: This is (NOT) a Rewatch!

Charles, Sonny, Brock, and Jagie kick off the actual watch-through by covering the first two episodes of Hideaki Anno's 1995 mecha classic — "Angel Attack" and "Unfamiliar Ceilings" (a.k.a. "The Beast"). Shinji arrives in Tokyo-3, meets his dead-eyed father, gets guilted into piloting a giant purple nightmare, and immediately takes one of the most brutal L's in anime history.

Along the way, we debate Netflix's subtitle crimes, rank the cast on the Horny/Depressed Axis, and get a drop in interview with a VERY special guest.

In this episode:

 * Netflix vs. Blu-ray vs. 2003 Toonami: the sub/dub holy war, weird name-order choices, and the tragic disappearance of "Fly Me to the Moon"
 * "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" as subliminal-messaging psyop — romance anime one second, Clockwork Orange blood montage the next
 * The letter: all redaction, no warmth, signed "Gendo Ikari" not "Dad"
 * Misato Katsuragi: hyper-competent chaos gremlin, drives like a felon, sends thirst-trap photos to an actual child, lives in a neckbeard nest
 * Gendo's smile: one (1) instance, deeply unsettling
 * Only children can pilot the Evas. Shinji is the Third Child. Who are the other two?
 * The Human Instrumentality Project: definitely just a throwaway line, nothing to worry about
 * Pen Pen the hot springs penguin: fan favorite, potential future pilot
 * The official Horny/Depressed Axis rankings for Episodes 1–2
 * Evangelion as depression art: Hideaki Anno pouring himself into Shinji's paralysis, self-loathing, and the frustration of everyone around him
 * Doug Jones, Andy Serkis, Danny DeVito, and the leaked Vancouver set footage

Next Episode Homework:  We're covering Episode 3 and Episode 4. The cast expands, the questions multiply, and Shinji probably — almost definitely — gets in the robot again.

Get In The Podcast, Shinji | Ep. 1: The Palette of Trauma / Hello Kitten

Welcome to the premiere of Get In The Podcast, Shinji: This is (NOT) a Rewatch!

In this initial "Session Zero" sync, Charles, Sonny, Brock, and Jagie map out the road ahead as we prepare to dive deep into Hideaki Anno’s 1995 mecha classic, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Before we start breaking down actual episodes, we lay down our backstories with the show, dissect Eva’s massive cultural baggage, and try to keep Jagie from destroying his room on mic.

In this episode:

 * How we first found Eva: 2000s VHS bootlegs, DivX files on burned CDs, and watching random episodes high in grandma's basement
 * Robin Williams, One Hour Photo, and the infamous Eva action figure cameo • Gatekeeping, Toonami late-night blocks, and the era when liking anime got you beat up
 * The "Horny vs. Depressed" spectrum of character psychology
 * The actual meaning of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and its heavy Christian dogma)
 * Predictions for our friend Doug, who has never seen the show

Next Episode Homework:  We begin the watch! We are covering Episode 1 ("Angel Attack") and Episode 2 ("Unfamiliar Ceilings").
