Hayden Weenig served in the Marshall Islands Kiribati Mission from 2016-2018 and might have been the most well liked elder in the mission. Hayden served on 3 outer islands, Abemama, Tabiteuea (Tab South), Abaiang along with serving on Tarawa. During his time on Tarawa Hayden was able to see some full circle conversions as well as serve as AP. If you haven’t tried sea worms yet, Hayden has a recipe for you!

Introduction and Background

00:00:01
Darin Tingey
right, we're on with another episode of the Islands podcast. We've got a good one for you today with the Hayden Winnig, who served at the same time as I did. um And I think we were actually in the MTC together, which was kind of fun.
00:00:17
Hayden
yeah
00:00:18
Darin Tingey
So give a quick intro where you're from and where you live now and what you're doing.
00:00:26
Hayden
Perfect. So hey, I'm Hayden. I am from Orem, Utah. um And then I went to BYU and then like after my mission, then i moved up to Logan to go to Utah State.
00:00:38
Hayden
And I'm doing a master's in civil engineering up there.
00:00:42
Darin Tingey
Wow. Okay. Big time.
00:00:44
Hayden
So yeah, I kind of think concrete.
00:00:46
Darin Tingey
ha

Missionary Timing and Challenges

00:00:48
Hayden
It's enthralling, you know?
00:00:48
Darin Tingey
So i don't know if I told you this, but I've had several people tell me you have to have Hayden on the podcast. Like you have to, like he's a legend. And I was like, you know what? You're so right. He is a legend.
00:01:01
Darin Tingey
um So you served in the kid or beside of the side of the mission and you came in the MTC in October.
00:01:02
Hayden
Yeah,
00:01:09
Darin Tingey
Is that right? 2016? Yeah.
00:01:10
Hayden
yeah that's right.
00:01:12
Darin Tingey
So you were like staggered. I remember we probably had the same start date originally, but then they staggered us so president could be in Kitabas when the Kitabas elders came and Marshall Islands. and
00:01:25
Darin Tingey
So you probably got pushed back and I got pushed forward. Is that right?
00:01:25
Hayden
Yeah,
00:01:28
Hayden
yeah because I think our original, mine original was like September 14th, is that what yours was?
00:01:32
Darin Tingey
Yeah, same.
00:01:33
Hayden
And then yeah, they got moved.
00:01:33
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:01:34
Hayden
um So then we got bumped back. So it's actually funny because I got my call back in April and I didn't think leave until October, was kind of fun.
00:01:42
Darin Tingey
That's a long time. Holy cow.
00:01:44
Hayden
It was good.
00:01:45
Darin Tingey
Did you add you, did you put your availability date later in the year?
00:01:49
Hayden
Yeah, I mean, I turned 18 in August, so I couldn't like really leave until August anyway, so.
00:01:52
Darin Tingey
Gotcha. Wow. But you got April and then left in October. That's a long time. Yeah. I was, uh, May to May to September, but
00:02:02
Hayden
There's a lot, too.
00:02:03
Darin Tingey
Anyway, you get called to Kiribus.

Cultural Impressions and Surprises

00:02:06
Darin Tingey
um Let's talk about when you got to Kiribus. And actually, you you I know you we talked to Dale about this, but you kind of had a little intro, a crazy story getting to Kiribus. Is that right?
00:02:18
Hayden
um I feel like us getting to Kitabas was pretty good. like we We got there and then I i mean, I guess me specifically, i we went, we arrived in Tarawa, got picked up, did the whole training thing, had an interview with president.
00:02:32
Hayden
um I remember like the power went out and he was like, oh, that's Kitabas. And I was like, oh, that's cute. and And then see we I stayed with like the zone leaders for a night. We like went to their lesson. They actually had us teach, which was really fun.
00:02:48
Hayden
And then their dinner fell through. And so we went to a restaurant, like the Slim Price, see the mic. So that was really yummy.
00:02:54
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:02:55
Hayden
um
00:02:58
Darin Tingey
Sorry, I'm confusing Elder Dale's experience with the intake before you that had a trouble getting there. But so you got there just fine, Fiji to Kitabas.
00:03:03
Hayden
Yeah, I think of mine. No.
00:03:07
Darin Tingey
Going to a restaurant like your first night or second night whatever it was, was that kind of weird? Did you expect restaurants to be in Kitabas?
00:03:15
Hayden
um no No, I didn't. Because I had had talked to Winston Farley. He like went to the same high school as me.
00:03:23
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:03:23
Hayden
like Close to stake. And so like the way he described it, restaurants didn't fit into that picture, for sure.
00:03:31
Darin Tingey
i because I remember i like one of my first nights in Kiribati, I also went to a restaurant and i was like, this restaurant actually pretty nice. like The food was actually really good. i was like, it's incredible.
00:03:42
Darin Tingey
But like i mean you see the stick cuts. You don't think like anyone has a restaurant.
00:03:46
Hayden
Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. And like the slim price it was like bougie, like it like over like a water thing with like little hut things and don't know, I thought it was pretty cool.
00:03:55
Darin Tingey
Yeah, you guys are eating nice in the sunset or something over the water.
00:03:59
Hayden
Yeah!
00:04:00
Darin Tingey
You're like, people pay millions of dollars for this and I'm getting it here on my mission.
00:04:01
Hayden
It's like this...
00:04:04
Hayden
Right? And it was great, so that was really good. And I flew out straight from there to Ademememé the name but next day.
00:04:10
Darin Tingey
So you went, wow, you went one day on Tarawa and then straight Outer Island.
00:04:14
Hayden
Yes, which was great.
00:04:17
Darin Tingey
Did that scare you at all? Were you nervous?
00:04:19
Hayden
um I think like a little bit, but also like very grateful, excited that I got to go out there. I think especially for language and then, ah yeah, my trainer out there was Elder Kennedy and he was absolutely amazing.
00:04:33
Hayden
I think getting there was kind of, I was reading through my journals and stuff and it was kind of funny to be like, and we ran it on like a dirt road and then we like got up in this hut and it was just like really funny. Like that's normal to me now, but totally was way weird.
00:04:44
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:04:47
Darin Tingey
Right. Yeah. Yeah. Give me the play by play. Like, you fly by yourself to have a MMA? Yeah.
00:04:52
Hayden
Yeah, so I flew by myself. It was only like a 30-minute flight. um I remember putting my journal, I was frustrated. I was like, we waited at the airport like all day for the plane to come, and then we got on the plane.
00:05:03
Hayden
And then, because it was late or something, whole bunch of delays. And then... McCarthy got off and then I got on, he got onto the plane as I got off of it. um Then Elder Kennedy had like arranged for a person to motorcycle my bag down.
00:05:18
Hayden
And then we like biked from the airport down to Carrieta Pique, which is like in the middle of the island. was like an hour, hour and a half bike ride. But like a car picked us up. So that was super cool. We just like sat in the back of a truck and like watched all the palm trees go by and like the ocean on the side.
00:05:35
Hayden
it's like very picturesque for sure.
00:05:37
Darin Tingey
And you're probably thinking like, oh my gosh, like I'm in Kitabas. I'm on an outer island in Kitabas. This is a wild. Yeah.
00:05:44
Hayden
yeah yeah and Yes, it was crazy. and So it was way, way weird. And then I was like, I was like really concerned about like the food too. Cause like, I was just like, I'd never had like fish and stuff.
00:05:56
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:05:56
Hayden
Like we show up to the first dinner um on the island and apparently Elder Kennedy had gotten a package from America and shared it with this family. And so we had like PB and J's for dinner. was like, oh, well, that's fun.
00:06:09
Darin Tingey
Yeah, totally throws you off. That reminds me of like ah a quick side story. Like, I served on an out-of-the-round in the Marshalls that was... like a hour flight from Quad, which is where they had the army base.
00:06:22
Darin Tingey
And on the army base, they have like subway for the Americans. And the Bishop of Lai was on Quad and he was flying from Quad to Lai. And so he brought us a subway sandwich. So I'm like, I'm on this tiny outer island in the middle of Irish Islands eating subway.
00:06:38
Darin Tingey
Like, what is this? This is crazy.
00:06:42
Hayden
That's novel. That is actually really novel. I love that.
00:06:45
Darin Tingey
Yeah. I mean, you're probably like PB and J. Like what was going on here? you know, like, so, and, and, and awesome.
00:06:51
Hayden
Yeah.
00:06:52
Darin Tingey
You got, uh, Kennedy as your, as your trainer. Cause he is so fun. He's the man. i love that guy.
00:06:59
Hayden
He is amazing. Did you work with him?
00:07:00
Darin Tingey
I, I never did, but, um, we, uh, connected after the mission and became good friends.
00:07:06
Hayden
Ah, what man.
00:07:06
Darin Tingey
So he's, he's so awesome.
00:07:08
Hayden
He's awesome.
00:07:09
Darin Tingey
So talk to me about MMA. What was MMA like? and And how long were there for?
00:07:14
Hayden
and Yeah, so Abba Meme, like the Frog Island, they have frogs. It's also known for other things that are less pleasant. And then it was super cool.
00:07:20
Darin Tingey
Ha ha ha.
00:07:23
Hayden
So when I was there, we had like this whole, it was me and Elder Kennedy for a transfer. And then we got two more elders. um Elder Tupac, Elder Johnson came out and they opened like the south half of the island.
00:07:34
Hayden
So that was really cool. So they had like them and then us. And then there's Abba Siku was like a Smaquo. that they had that we we even out visited like every other week.
00:07:46
Hayden
I only went once though, or maybe twice with Elder Kennedy because then after that, they just started like rotating through the people and then I couldn't really speak the language. So I wasn't an asset and going there.
00:07:54
Darin Tingey
Yeah,
00:07:55
Hayden
um Plus I got sick when we went out there the first time they had it. So sea worms, you have sea worms?
00:08:02
Darin Tingey
yeah yep.
00:08:02
Hayden
Yeah. They both, so gross. And they like made them, well, okay, like the dried ones are your, or the dried ones are different.
00:08:10
Darin Tingey
The dried ones are good. Yes, i i would agree with that. i would agree with that.
00:08:14
Hayden
But the moist ones, the ones that are like literal worms were so gross. And they had soaked, they just cooked it into like a curry and it like killed my stomach. I like was like throwing up at the street and now the Kennedy's like, don't throw up, like don't try to throw up.
00:08:28
Hayden
I was like, I'm not trying to throw up.
00:08:29
Darin Tingey
I'm just puking.
00:08:30
Hayden
And then I'm just fuking. That's just what happens. um And let's see. So that was that. So anyway, that was, I couldn't have curry for like the rest of my mission.
00:08:41
Hayden
It just like upset my stomach. It was kind of funny.
00:08:43
Darin Tingey
I bet.
00:08:43
Hayden
Learned hatred.
00:08:43
Darin Tingey
The sea worms, don't think I, don't I don't, actually don't think I ever had a raw one. I had, um I had a dried one, like the first day i got the tarawa and other darm was like, you know, try one of these.
00:08:48
Hayden
to see
00:08:55
Darin Tingey
And I'm like, okay. And he's like, after I eat it, they're like, you might get sick. And I'm like, what's, what do you mean I might get sick? They're like, people kind of have a, like a reaction to it lot of times.
00:09:06
Darin Tingey
I'm like, well, thanks for telling me, you know, luckily I was fine.
00:09:09
Hayden
Yeah. What I love about it is that it's like not just like a white person like gets sick, like never had this. It's like literally anyone like kid of his people too. They're telling me like, oh like, then why do you eat them?
00:09:22
Darin Tingey
Yeah. and And they like, i don't even know how they get them. It's like when the when the tide goes out and the sand is there, like they stick sticks in the ground.
00:09:32
Darin Tingey
Is that how they get them out?
00:09:33
Darin Tingey
i can't remember.
00:09:33
Hayden
Yeah, it's called the white boat.
00:09:35
Hayden
They like have a little stick. And then it's like they're full of sand.
00:09:37
Darin Tingey
They find the holes in the sand, right?
00:09:39
Hayden
Yeah, little holes. And then they're full of sand, so they have to like turn them inside out by like pushing the sand out. And then they're like, restrain. Anyway, that was, yeah.
00:09:47
Darin Tingey
It's crazy. you know, I didn't see one of those in the Marsh Islands. They never, they didn't eat those in the Marsh Islands or they didn't find them or what. And i don't know if that was because like Kitabas seemed a little more like shallow.
00:09:59
Darin Tingey
I've talked about on other podcasts, but like Kitabas, like when tide goes out, you can walk forever.
00:09:59
Hayden
Maybe.
00:10:04
Darin Tingey
But Marsh Islands is like the lagoons were a lot deeper for some reason. So i don't know if that had had anything to do with it, but.
00:10:11
Hayden
Yeah, maybe they just don't live there. Or maybe they're just too classy to eat them or something. I don't know.

Life and Experiences in Tab South

00:10:17
Darin Tingey
i
00:10:18
Hayden
I don't know.
00:10:18
Darin Tingey
you So when the two other elders came, like, i mean, I've been, it's huge. So were you guys covering the whole Island before they got there?
00:10:27
Hayden
We were. So there was heaps of biking for sure. um it's like funny. I was like reading through like things to like prepare and was like, wow, they like, it's like, and then we went to this lesson and then we biked and that was dinner.
00:10:40
Hayden
And I was like, we just had lunch, but was like, oh, because we biked for like three hours.
00:10:42
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:10:44
Hayden
um But yeah, we did like church people talked about on other podcasts. Like they do like church up and then you do all the little mini churches. Right.
00:10:53
Darin Tingey
Yeah, but how many villages are you passing by to do other, you know, like, feel like on my end, we passed so many villages in between the other villages that we did church in.
00:11:01
Hayden
Right. So many, i had like a whole map of like the island and it was like, I don't know, we only did four churches, but there's tons of little villages.
00:11:14
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Yeah.
00:11:15
Hayden
So yeah, that was kind of crazy.
00:11:18
Darin Tingey
And what was your favorite thing about Abman? Like what kind of, when do you think about Abman, what do you think of?
00:11:22
Hayden
Ooh.
00:11:25
Darin Tingey
What do you, what?
00:11:26
Hayden
Oh, okay. So I think about like the members were super awesome and super like friendly. Elder Kennedy was amazing, like probably the best trainer anyone could have. He was just like so friendly and like really prioritized studying.
00:11:37
Hayden
um He would fast, we fasted every Sunday, um which was fun. But like also every Sunday.
00:11:42
Darin Tingey
Every Sunday while you're while you're riding hours and hours on your bike,
00:11:46
Hayden
Yeah, and you literally, and you don't eat dinner until like 7.30. What was actually really funny is I felt impressed in the MTC to start fasting every Sunday. And so I did. and so my body was like used to it a little bit by the time I got to Abba Neme.
00:11:57
Hayden
but um But also what was funny is we like, so we fast every Sunday. So it's like not always fast Sunday when we're fasting. And we showed up to do church in like the northernmost village where we would start and then we'd go go south.
00:12:03
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:12:08
Hayden
um And they were cooking like full on like French toast, like bougie French toast. was like, I don't even know how you're doing this. Like the bread looked good.
00:12:13
Darin Tingey
but
00:12:14
Hayden
They were frying it. Elder Kennedy was like, Elder Winnick, it's like not worth it today. We should have some French toast. So we had the French toast. As we finish our French toast, they bring out this like a tray that's like heaped with this weird meat.
00:12:29
Hayden
And they're like, we killed our dog today. You can have some dog now. And I was like, you're kidding me. This is like God's punishment for having eaten French toast instead of fasting. So that was that was my first time having dog.
00:12:43
Hayden
It was not my favorite, but it was a thing.
00:12:44
Darin Tingey
did it taste like? Chicken?
00:12:47
Hayden
I honestly don't know. I just felt like it tasted like meat.
00:12:50
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:12:50
Hayden
Like it was like, I didn't really feel like it had too much of a flavor, but it was like meaty.
00:12:55
Darin Tingey
Yep.
00:12:57
Hayden
Yeah.
00:12:57
Darin Tingey
Yeah, that dogs, i mean, it's just I think it's totally common in the islands to eat dog. I don't know. We're we're so attached, but it's just...
00:13:04
Hayden
Yeah, they did not.
00:13:08
Darin Tingey
Oh, that's good.
00:13:10
Hayden
Yeah.
00:13:10
Darin Tingey
So um how long are we going a mermaid for?
00:13:15
Hayden
So I was there for two and a half transfers. So I had two transfers with Elder Kennedy, and then Elder Dale came out, it was really cool. He was like pretty fresh, but still super good at the language, which was amazing. um And we only had three weeks together um because Elder Johnson got sick, and so he had to go in. And then like we didn't have an elder to send out, so I went in with him, or just a couple days after.
00:13:37
Hayden
it was kind of cool because because when we were doing the whole a um extra elders on the island, we were doing a whole bunch of exchanges and elder jubek was in my mtc group um and so he was out there and i did like an exchange with him it's like none either what we'd both been out for like six weeks we doing lessons and stuff it was just really cool to see like gift of tongues work with a couple like one of the lessons we went to the person like actually understood what we were saying and like we had full-on um lesson
00:14:09
Hayden
it was really cool.
00:14:10
Darin Tingey
Totally. Were you sad to leave Abamene when you left?
00:14:14
Hayden
I was, yes, yes and no. I was like sad, but it was like also like it was, I was excited to like go somewhere else too. um I got sent to Damaiku, which had been like hyped up to me from Elder Kennedy.
00:14:28
Hayden
um And we'd also, we all went in for Christmas and that's where I stayed, I stayed in the group. And so I kind of had already like met some of the members and seen like the houses and stuff and was just get cool to get to go there after that.
00:14:41
Hayden
So I think it was a nice transition.
00:14:43
Darin Tingey
So can we talk about Christmas for a little bit? I know President Larkin said never talk about Christmas, but I want to talk about it, all right?

Significant Cultural Exchanges

00:14:49
Darin Tingey
and um And you don't have to go super into detail because I actually, President Larkin, I want to have you on the pod. We're goingnna talk about Christmas, okay?
00:14:57
Darin Tingey
But I know you guys all got flown in because ah the president of Kinnabist was hosting you guys for Christmas.
00:15:03
Hayden
Yes, that was a bop. It was so cool. We had like our... and I think we also had mission tour at the same time.
00:15:11
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:15:12
Hayden
So like we're in for like a whole week, question mark? Maybe that's wrong. and Maybe I'm just remembering that.
00:15:15
Darin Tingey
Yeah, something like that.
00:15:16
Hayden
um But yeah, so we flew in. um it was really cool because Elder Kennedy, I think, had served in Damaiku, so we were all sleeping. There's, I don't know how many people in a flat, but like every flat was just jam-packed with missionaries.
00:15:27
Hayden
So we were in the Damaiku house, it's Damaiku 1.
00:15:28
Darin Tingey
right
00:15:31
Hayden
michael one um They're just on the floor with a whole bunch of missionaries. And then yeah actually went really well for me like us. like Maybe this is a good person to ask, because it makes it sound like it was a bop and a half, because we went around and we were just attracting into Maiku And this is like the time when, i think, was Elder Dharam into Maiku? Question mark? I don't know. he was So there were some elders that were walking.
00:15:55
Hayden
And this sister comes, like not a sister missionary, like a sister, like a female human.
00:15:58
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:16:00
Hayden
um comes running down the street and is like elders elders and she um had like her husband had died and she went to her minister and had been like i like feel like i want to see him again like i feel like i should be able to see him again and he was like whoa you've been talking to the lds people and she's like what is this what they believe so she like sprints out sees the missionaries and is like come to my house um And so she was in that area. So I got to go with them to like dinner.
00:16:30
Hayden
I think I went to like a lesson. i mean, I didn't really speak the language super well. So like I was kind of they i was like present.
00:16:35
Darin Tingey
Sure. Yeah. All right.
00:16:36
Hayden
But I had like little pass-along cards that i my mom had given me that were like pictures of Jesus. So I gave her a picture of Jesus. Flash forward like a year and a half, it's like towards the end of my mission. I was in Bandaeve, and she had family down there. She came down for a dinner.
00:16:53
Hayden
um and was there and she like still had that picture and she's like, I want more of these so I can give them to like my kids. And so it was really cool to like see that little circle.
00:16:59
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:17:01
Hayden
But
00:17:01
Darin Tingey
Yeah, that's so cool.
00:17:04
Hayden
but yeah, it was definitely crazy because there's so many missionaries and then we went to the president's house to have dinner and they gave us all like the crowns, the crown name, is that what they're called?
00:17:15
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:17:16
Hayden
And then, so was kind of, yeah, the way,
00:17:18
Darin Tingey
The flower crowns. here What are they called again?
00:17:22
Darin Tingey
Yeah, something like that.
00:17:22
Hayden
may wait
00:17:24
Darin Tingey
Dude, we got we gotta to freshen up.
00:17:25
Hayden
There's an A sound in there. um the but and I don't even know. But it was really cool. dancing and food. and it was like getting late. And so president asked for us to be dismissed.
00:17:39
Hayden
And so we all left. left The rumor was that there was going to be fireworks, but I mean, I didn't hear any fireworks, so I don't think that I feel like that was a lie, but it was really cool.
00:17:49
Hayden
It got to see the president's mansion and stuff. Yeah.
00:17:53
Darin Tingey
and And I know there was some dancing. you guys danced with everybody, ada yada, yada.
00:17:58
Hayden
Yeah, everyone danced. there's I won't single.
00:18:00
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Even president, right?
00:18:02
Hayden
Yeah. yeah
00:18:04
Darin Tingey
I'll single him out.
00:18:04
Hayden
But it was it was kosher dancing.
00:18:05
Darin Tingey
I'll single him out.
00:18:06
Hayden
it was kosher dancing.
00:18:07
Darin Tingey
That's right. Right.
00:18:08
Hayden
there is yeah It was more just like, yeah, everyone was there. It wasn't really even like the Swiss where it's like super scandalous and stuff.
00:18:15
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:18:16
Hayden
It was really fun.
00:18:18
Darin Tingey
The switch is so fun because all the old ladies like come up to you and they want to dance the elders and they're like, you know, they're like but putting their hands around and you're like, whoa, all right.
00:18:28
Hayden
They're like,
00:18:29
Darin Tingey
And like everyone in the Meneb is like loving it. They're all dying laughing because this white elder is dancing with this old lady. So fun. I love that part about Kitabas.
00:18:40
Hayden
okay! Oh, they're funny. They're definitely funny.
00:18:42
Darin Tingey
Did President and whoever was there for Mission Tour give Dona Samao, the President Kitabas, like a ah a statue of Christ or something like that?
00:18:51
Hayden
I think he did. i think he gave him like a Yai Christos and...
00:18:53
Darin Tingey
feel like I saw a picture.
00:18:57
Hayden
said thanks and stuff it was just really cool because it was like wow like government is like i think that's something that's really cool kitabas like the whole governmental relationship with the church seems to be really good and i know that like he was able to help get the president of kitabas over to temple square and like that's when he met with like president nelson and like asked for a temple and stuff so i thought that was just like swank like okay
00:19:01
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:19:18
Darin Tingey
Yeah, so cool. Yeah, President Larkin, i I talked to him after the mission, and he was, you know, he he spent most of his time in Kiribati compared to the Marsh Islands. And I mean, but a big part of that was like, he was encouraged to really build a relationship with the government and so they could get a temple there.
00:19:37
Darin Tingey
So that was kind of one of his goals.
00:19:39
Hayden
Yeah, we did it with them.
00:19:40
Darin Tingey
um Okay, so you were able to come in for Christmas, then go back out, and then you came back and you went to Tumaygu as your area, which is on Tarawa.
00:19:41
Hayden
did
00:19:48
Hayden
Yes, Andaroa is like Kainatai where, like Bondiki and then Damaiku and Damao Bondiki is where the airport is, right? um And so that was in our ward. Bondiki was in the ward.
00:19:57
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:19:57
Hayden
Well, part of it was for Damaiku 2nd. I feel like Damaiku is just super fun because it's like suburbia. Like there's, the houses are spread out, but they're like not super spread out.
00:20:07
Darin Tingey
for
00:20:10
Hayden
So you get to really interact with the members. The members are really friendly. had Elder Miller as my companion. He was super like, wow, like on top of things, like lessons cranked through and like had a whole baptismal funnel progression for people, which was really cool.
00:20:24
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:20:29
Hayden
did it really well. It wasn't like he was just like baptizing people. He was like very good at being engaged, yeah.
00:20:34
Darin Tingey
or Yeah.
00:20:36
Hayden
And then he left, and then I got Elder Mahana for like a week, which was kind of cool because he was waiting to go to Onotoa.
00:20:41
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:20:43
Hayden
um He was super friendly, good at haircuts.
00:20:45
Darin Tingey
Yeah. yeah
00:20:46
Hayden
I remember he was like, I think
00:20:47
Darin Tingey
Yeah. He cut my hair. cut my hair a bunch on the, on the, on the Marshall Island side.
00:20:54
Hayden
and think with haircuts, that was something that wass really funny, is I was always too shy to ask for haircuts. So I cut my hair multiple times. It was terrible. Like, it was like very badly cut. My hair never looked good on the mission.
00:21:05
Hayden
And so...
00:21:05
Darin Tingey
Did you have like a like the buzzer, the hair clippers?
00:21:08
Hayden
No, I just use like little paper scissors that you find in like elementary schools.
00:21:12
Darin Tingey
You did not, no way
00:21:13
Hayden
i'm like
00:21:15
Hayden
It was and then i mean I got haircuts a couple of times from people, which I was grateful for because then it was like actually cut.
00:21:16
Darin Tingey
That's so funny.
00:21:21
Hayden
But there were a few times when my hair looked real bad, like like especially at the beginning, because I was too shy to ask. I got a nice haircut for Christmas because they were doing like factory work.
00:21:27
Darin Tingey
ah
00:21:32
Darin Tingey
Yeah, right, right, right.
00:21:32
Hayden
People know how to cut it.
00:21:34
Darin Tingey
So were you in Tamaguyo for a long time?
00:21:35
Hayden
I was there for like two weight three transfers probably because then I got Elder Graham. He was super cool, really good at working with members. um then right ah And then I was supposed to go to Tab South, but like the flight got weirdified, so I went Abithal for like a week with Tadawajata.
00:21:51
Darin Tingey
Where's that?
00:21:53
Hayden
So it's like Abithal and Tadawajata, the city.
00:21:53
Darin Tingey
This is Tarawaita? Yeah.
00:21:56
Hayden
um And i got sent down to Tab South.
00:21:57
Darin Tingey
OK.
00:22:00
Hayden
And that's when I served with Elder Peterson, which was super swank. He's super cool. I think that
00:22:04
Darin Tingey
So I think when you were in Damaiku for... I came off of Mayana. And I think we picked you up one for a P-Day. I remember um picking you up in Damaiku for a P-Day.
00:22:17
Hayden
Ah, P-days are the best.
00:22:19
Darin Tingey
One time. I think that was like the one time I saw you in the... Like besides the MTC, like in the mission was when we picked you up for P-Day.
00:22:25
Hayden
Yeah, yeah.
00:22:27
Darin Tingey
I was there for, no joke, like three days before went back to the Marshalls. And I even... I think... I might've gone to a district meeting. I went to district meeting. I think you were a part of that one too. um And then I left to back to Marshall's like the next day.
00:22:41
Hayden
It's just crazy.
00:22:41
Darin Tingey
So ah you saw you one time in Kitabas, one time.
00:22:43
Hayden
It was just crazy.
00:22:45
Darin Tingey
And it's into my.
00:22:45
Hayden
But it was there. You can witness. I was i was present as a counterpoint.
00:22:47
Darin Tingey
ah
00:22:50
Darin Tingey
So Tab South. Are you like, i feel like when I got to Kittabus, I was like, oh, Tab South, that is the most ebook, you know, outer island, like it is so outie. Were you like, were you nervous at all for Tab South?
00:23:05
Hayden
um I was like kind of excited, but like nervous.
00:23:08
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:23:08
Hayden
i mean, nervous, but excited.
00:23:08
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:23:09
Hayden
that or i don't know. i don't know what I was at that point.
00:23:11
Darin Tingey
I mean, to be honest, I was a little jealous that Peterson got to go from from the Marshalls group. I was jealous that he got to go to town south because i like I was like, oh, I want the outer island experience, you know?
00:23:24
Darin Tingey
ah But, like, honestly, my Anna was so awesome. I loved it. So I was so happy went there.
00:23:29
Hayden
quick give it okay I don't know.
00:23:29
Darin Tingey
But, yeah, no, yeah. Totally.
00:23:33
Hayden
Okay, well, that's, no, yeah.
00:23:33
Darin Tingey
ah
00:23:36
Hayden
it was I was really glad I got to go because of the outer islands, I feel like, were really good for language learning and, like, x like just to experience it.
00:23:40
Darin Tingey
totally
00:23:43
Hayden
So was quietly excited, maybe, would be a better way to phrase it.
00:23:47
Darin Tingey
Which is funny that you get with Peterson because, no joke, you guys like the same person. Like, a little bit.
00:23:52
Hayden
Aw, I love him.
00:23:52
Darin Tingey
Like, you guys are like both like so nice and like just good people deep down. And like, like Peterson was on the Marshall side and like you were on the kid of a side and then you're just destined to be companions in Tab South.
00:24:07
Hayden
Right? It made me... I honestly... was one of my absolute like favorite people to work with. I do... I like ah half thought that maybe he emergency transferred away from me though because we only had each other for like three weeks.
00:24:18
Hayden
But it was super fun.
00:24:19
Darin Tingey
ah
00:24:21
Hayden
i absolutely loved him. He's super like hardworking and caring and like... He would make all the food, but we only had rice. So like he would like extra boil the rice in the morning, so it was like soft rice. And then he'd like not boil it as much in the evening, so it was hard rice. It was just funny that like he's awesome.
00:24:42
Hayden
I don't know.
00:24:43
Darin Tingey
but is with Is Tap South really like as Outer Island as people say it is? like
00:24:48
Hayden
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:50
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:24:50
Hayden
There was like a couple stores and like that had like a few items, but like a lot of them had like run out at that certain point.
00:24:51
Darin Tingey
Tell me.
00:24:56
Hayden
And like at that point, there no phone there. I went back a couple years ago and they have cellular phones and all that stuff.
00:25:02
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:25:02
Hayden
um But when we were there, there's no phone and you had to like use the counselor. radio, the radio. um And they made a law at one point, I don't know if this is just because they didn't like us, that you could only use your radio.
00:25:09
Darin Tingey
Uh huh.
00:25:15
Hayden
So like we went to the counselor after a few weeks of going and they're like, just kidding, you can't like use it anymore because it's not your radio. And we're like, oh, Well, isn't that the point of us paying to use it?
00:25:23
Darin Tingey
again
00:25:25
Hayden
I don't know.
00:25:25
Darin Tingey
but And is it just because it's so far south that
00:25:26
Hayden
So then we just didn't have contact with that at all, which was fine. But let's see. What else is you keep out? it Yeah, there's just like nothing there, really. There's like no stores.
00:25:37
Hayden
People like really rationed their like rice and stuff. You'd hear about people like boating up to Tab North to go get rice and then boating back down to like bring it down. um
00:25:52
Hayden
Yeah, I think they just run out of cargo.
00:25:53
Darin Tingey
the boat The food boat, yeah, they run out of cargo. So the time they get to Tab South, they're like, hey, we got a few bags of rice and maybe maybe some flour, know, I don't know.
00:26:02
Hayden
Yeah, I don't think I ever saw any flour, but yeah there's rice and the, thankfully, whoever was there before me had bought like a huge bag of rice, and so we just looked off of that. I don't think we ever had to buy.
00:26:13
Darin Tingey
So if if there's no, like, food really, there's no cargo being delivered to Tab South, du are people, like, as big into collecting coconuts, right?
00:26:23
Darin Tingey
Cause like maybe they don't have anything to spend their money on anyway,
00:26:26
Hayden
I felt like no. Like, i was it was I was confused a little bit because they didn't really cut coconuts. They did more, like, kid-a-biss things, which I think was cool. Like, they were, like, rarangangie. Like, they were making mats and, like, really good at making, like, really nice mats and nice fans and um their houses.
00:26:36
Darin Tingey
Yeah, right.
00:26:43
Hayden
They were super clean. I think that was one thing that i really loved, too. They, like... like
00:26:48
Darin Tingey
Hmm.
00:26:48
Hayden
ta their dirt, their dirt was very clean, you know, it was very like they weeded and stuff.
00:26:54
Darin Tingey
They swept the dirt, yeah, they swept the dirt.
00:26:57
Hayden
um And what else? But like, there was like one family that like was really into it. I feel like most people just didn't care as much. It was, I felt like on Abamame, it was a much bigger thing.
00:27:08
Hayden
That's what we would do for service luck on Abamame. Like, have us cut coconuts.
00:27:12
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Okay, so you didn't do that a lot in Top South then.
00:27:16
Hayden
Not in Tabs Out, sorry, in Abba Miami we that a lot.
00:27:18
Darin Tingey
Right, but in Top South, you didn't you didn't do a lot of...
00:27:19
Hayden
But like Tabs Out, no.
00:27:22
Darin Tingey
ah
00:27:22
Hayden
No.
00:27:23
Darin Tingey
Korobin, Katarin, like none none of that.
00:27:25
Hayden
No.
00:27:26
Darin Tingey
Really?
00:27:26
Hayden
No, yeah. I remember like trying to figure out things to do for service. So one time Elder Dale and I, he was like my next companion, we went, we're like, we'll clean out the road. So we were like throwing coconuts out of the road and dragging branches out.
00:27:38
Hayden
Apparently got us like a shout out in like one of the little clan meetings that they have with all the old people, old Urimahane.
00:27:44
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:27:45
Hayden
um That was fun. But yeah. And like, they no one fed us on Tab South either. Like, I feel like in all my other areas, I ate dinner like every night with a member or like someone.
00:27:59
Hayden
But Tab South, we always had to like go not make our food, like make our food.
00:28:03
Darin Tingey
is that Is that because they didn't have and like a lot of food or was it because there wasn't a lot of members they were very friendly to towards you? You don't know.
00:28:12
Hayden
I almost feel like it was the second option, number two.
00:28:14
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:28:15
Hayden
But there's just like, there was some town members, and and don't think missionary member relations were necessarily at the peak right then. and
00:28:25
Darin Tingey
So I've heard. So I've heard.
00:28:27
Hayden
so but the people are really cool there's like this one guy he lived down in taku which is like the very end of the island and so we'd bike down and then like he would come out in his little he's like this old man like come out with his little canoe pick up the elders and we'd like canoe across to taku he's like the only member there and then we'd you know go well only member mean there's like obviously a bunch of people that are baptized but not attending church um so we would
00:28:47
Darin Tingey
That's cool.
00:28:53
Darin Tingey
Sure. I feel like the pictures of Tab South were often you guys walking from Island Town in the water. I feel like that's what the classic Tab South photos.

Humor and Cultural Observations

00:29:02
Hayden
Yeah, that's a tough stuff.
00:29:03
Darin Tingey
ah It's like,
00:29:04
Hayden
That's for sure. That's I was like, when I'm thinking pictures to send you, was like, those are, these are the ways.
00:29:08
Darin Tingey
Yeah, I want those. Send those to me. We're going to post those because like Because when I think Tab South, I think of you guys always walking between the islands in the water, and it's gorgeous.
00:29:19
Darin Tingey
It's absolutely beautiful. um You know you guys a little bit skinnier because not eating a lot of food on Tab South. and Culturally as well, like they're known for like the city city, like the killing, carrying big knives.
00:29:32
Hayden
Yeah.
00:29:34
Darin Tingey
But when you got there, was it more of a joke or was it
00:29:38
Hayden
what What's funny is that I was told not to joke about it like while I was there.
00:29:38
Darin Tingey
like
00:29:42
Darin Tingey
like
00:29:43
Hayden
like They almost like kind of take offense to it. I don't know how true that is. cause like ah heard that from Peterson who heard that from Jackson.
00:29:50
Darin Tingey
Jackson.
00:29:52
Hayden
And so I don't know. like Because I was just going off what other people told me. And I didn't want to test it out.
00:29:58
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:29:59
Hayden
Yeah.
00:30:00
Darin Tingey
did Did they ever joke about it though, the people?
00:30:02
Hayden
No, but they didn't.
00:30:02
Darin Tingey
Hmm,
00:30:02
Hayden
That's the thing is they don't like, I feel like in the South, with they're like less laughing-y, you know?
00:30:07
Darin Tingey
hmm.
00:30:07
Hayden
Like, I feel like the farther North you go, the more like jocular they are.
00:30:11
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:30:11
Hayden
And down South, they're like very serious and like very, and like they have the whole, like you have to like park your bike on the side of the road and then call out. They're like, Hey, can I come?
00:30:22
Hayden
Even though their house is like far back and then you can come, which was interesting too.
00:30:25
Darin Tingey
Interesting.
00:30:28
Hayden
There's just a lot more culturally strict, I think. Um,
00:30:31
Darin Tingey
Interesting.
00:30:32
Hayden
was my takeaway from TAP South. They were really cool, though. I love it. And it was really pretty.
00:30:39
Darin Tingey
Did you guys do a lot of boat doggies, lot of parties or no?
00:30:42
Hayden
Actually, i we the only botakite remember getting invited to there was the Sulai. um
00:30:48
Darin Tingey
Yep.
00:30:48
Hayden
So we got to watch the Bomane, like the wrestling match.
00:30:51
Darin Tingey
Cool.
00:30:52
Hayden
um And so that was pretty cool. Just people wrestling.
00:30:58
Darin Tingey
did Did you give a speech and I did the boat doggies Dab South?
00:31:00
Hayden
No, not on Temp South.
00:31:01
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:31:02
Hayden
For Temp South, we were like disconnected. it was kind of cool though.
00:31:05
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:31:06
Hayden
it was really fun. um i feel like...
00:31:09
Darin Tingey
Well, you mentioned an interesting thing like, you know, the relations between the missionaries and the people weren't as strong. and It's crazy because, you know, like one missionary or one companionship can totally wreck it for a long time.
00:31:22
Darin Tingey
Like I remember even on the Marshall side, like on Madro, Main Island, We'd all go get our ah driver's license so we could all drive a Madro. And every time we went, the police officers would be like, hey, don't be like that one elder.
00:31:37
Darin Tingey
He stole the car. In the middle of the night, he was driving to he was driving somewhere and flipped it. He flipped the car. And like the whole island knows about it. And they'll know about it forever. And they'll always associate the missionaries with that one story.
00:31:52
Darin Tingey
And so it's like, it's always that like one bad thing that someone, one of the missionaries does. So if if you're going out on your mission right now, just remember that, like you, that will like hold true with the village, with the island, it'll affect everything.
00:32:06
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:32:07
Hayden
Amen. Amen. oh that's so true, though. Yeah. And I'm not really sure exactly what happened before and with everything. But and yeah, it was it was good, though.
00:32:17
Darin Tingey
right
00:32:21
Hayden
It's actually funny.
00:32:22
Darin Tingey
But it's...
00:32:22
Hayden
So this like not related, but kind of calling back to oh, wait, you go. Never mind.
00:32:25
Darin Tingey
No, no, go for it.
00:32:27
Hayden
Oh, I just can't say it's kind of funny. You were saying that like they remember Like they you said, they like remember that it's the missionaries. like Sometimes they like forget that it was a missionary. They just like associate it with the missionary.
00:32:37
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:32:38
Hayden
ah like Missionaries in general, like white guys in white shirts.
00:32:40
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:32:42
Hayden
they was I was on Tab South for like a couple of transfers, well, three transfers. They, i don't think, realized that I was not Elder Peterson, like some of the members. Because there was a couple times where they'd be like, yeah, you were there with Elder Jackson, like, remember?
00:32:56
Hayden
And I was like, no, like I was and was not there with Elder Jackson. They were like adamant. I think that some of them still believed that I was Elder Peterson, which I guess is a compliment.
00:33:04
Darin Tingey
I'm sorry.
00:33:05
Hayden
I felt very honored. But I was also like, I am a different person. Please don't expect me to remember anything from this situation.
00:33:09
Darin Tingey
You guys are too much alike, too nice. So they're just like, oh, it's the same guy.
00:33:14
Hayden
It must be, let's see.
00:33:15
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:33:16
Hayden
Yeah, so that was fun.
00:33:17
Darin Tingey
Well, you always wonder, like, do the kids realize when people are transferred off or do they just like forever see these two guys in white shirts, you know, and they're just like the same person, you know, growing up. I don't know.
00:33:30
Hayden
I do think that for sure.
00:33:30
Darin Tingey
They're just always there.
00:33:31
Hayden
yeah Yeah, I mean, for sure there's got to be some that like they remember, because they'll be like, I remember they're like, oh, do you know Elder So-and-so? And so and i'm like, no, i have no idea who that is, but that so sounds like you loved him. I'm glad.
00:33:41
Darin Tingey
It was five years ago. You know him?
00:33:43
Hayden
years ago he's like from america as well so you gotta know him uh
00:33:44
Darin Tingey
No. Yeah. How far from the ocean do you live? You know, they did i was like, ah, yeah.
00:33:51
Hayden
like uh 10 hours oh it's so true so true
00:33:52
Darin Tingey
and How far from the lagoon side do you live? You're like, ah, it's quite a while. It's quite a, really? like, yeah, I don't think you understand. Like, it's not, there's no ocean where I live and they just can't fathom it, you know?
00:34:06
Hayden
oh it's so true so true
00:34:08
Darin Tingey
No, but it's interesting to hear about the kind of the culture stuff on Tab South, because like I contrast it to what I experienced on Mayanna where everyone was always joking about the kebe, like they're them not being known for lying. Like they're always joking about it. Like you could be at a dinner and be like, man, this is the best papaya I've ever had.
00:34:27
Darin Tingey
Like I senior, senior couples actually came out and they had, they threw them a little party and they gave papaya and they're the best papaya I've ever And they're like, oh, look, he's already good at lying. Like, he's only been on my internet for, like, five minutes, you know?
00:34:41
Darin Tingey
um And then, like, we went to so many, both, like, so many parties.
00:34:42
Hayden
I love
00:34:44
Darin Tingey
I'm like, oh, my gosh. Like, so many speeches. And I was, like, brand new. I give freaking speech to everyone. It was rough. But it was good. was so fun. I loved that about my internet. They loved parties.
00:34:55
Darin Tingey
There was, like, we did the... the Catena Minyebe, like the, it was like the anniversary of the village, like the, of building the Minyebe. And so no joke for a whole week, we were there because we had to be there for every part of the party. And it started to like five 30 in the morning. You had to be there, you know, luckily we live right next to Minyebe. So was good, but it was, it was a crazy party. it was so fun.
00:35:20
Hayden
Wait, that's so cool.
00:35:20
Darin Tingey
Anyway, um, Tab South, anything else from Tab South?
00:35:21
Hayden
I love that.
00:35:25
Darin Tingey
Did you want to touch it or do you want
00:35:27
Hayden
I think that was great. i mean, just like lessons from people. I remember like we collected stones for like a service project. We did the weirdest service out there. um And then they were like, I just remember like we got a bag and then Ellie Peterson's like filled up another bag. He's like, do what you promised and do a little bit more. I was like, oh, what guy.
00:35:45
Hayden
where we were supposed to be building a chapel, question but that never ended up happening. we were like doing it kind recollecting the, the pillars part.
00:35:55
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:35:57
Hayden
And i remember like moving them around, and like I like picked one up, or they helped me pick one up and then like let me carry it. And I thought that was so cool because I was always like the weak one. And so I was like, thanks. Thanks, Elder Peterson, for letting me feel strong for a second.
00:36:09
Hayden
um But then after that, so Tab South was super cool. Got transferred to Bandaiabe, or Jadiriki Second Ward, which was about Tarawa again.
00:36:16
Darin Tingey
a tarawa again. Yep.
00:36:19
Hayden
um and like And maybe I'll run through like the rest of the mission like super quick, because they're all kind of like related in a sense.
00:36:22
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Okay.
00:36:24
Hayden
So was there with like Elder Verisoni and Elder Sheffield. Super awesome. They're super amazing. And I got transferred to Abe Yang, and I got to train. So it was like my first time being senior companion, and I was like almost done the mission.
00:36:36
Hayden
um And then I had Elder Saint.
00:36:37
Darin Tingey
Abayang, another outer island. Another outer island.
00:36:39
Hayden
Yeah, super cool.
00:36:40
Darin Tingey
That's sick.
00:36:42
Hayden
So I'd Samphed and Butcher, and then I'd Pratt for like a little bit as well. And then I got moved to Domeiku first. So I went back to Domeiku for like two weeks, like a week and a half with like Elder Farner and Elder Shubway, Elder Omoloma, and I got moved back to Vandiape with Elder Morphonius and Elder Fifita.
00:36:58
Hayden
um So that's where I died.
00:36:59
Darin Tingey
that's where you died?
00:37:01
Hayden
I was deceased there.
00:37:01
Darin Tingey
sir So your areas on Tarawa, you served in multiple times, basically.
00:37:07
Hayden
Yeah, yeah. i like was only in Damaiku and Bandayape, but I was there multiple times, yeah.
00:37:10
Darin Tingey
That's actually kind of cool
00:37:13
Hayden
So it was super, it was like, it was really fun because it kind of felt like home. Like Damaiku was kind of my home, because I served there like but three different times in my mission. And then Bandayape was also, was there for like seven transfers.
00:37:24
Hayden
So that was really fun.
00:37:26
Darin Tingey
of cool. Wow. What was your favorite area out of those in the end?
00:37:32
Hayden
On Tarawa?
00:37:33
Darin Tingey
Yeah, Antaroa.
00:37:34
Hayden
Or in general? Oh, on Tarawa?
00:37:35
Darin Tingey
No, Antaroa.
00:37:37
Hayden
It was like hard. I loved bun like the ward in Bandaiabe. um I have fonder memories memories of Damaiku, though. I feel like in Bandaiabe, because I was in leadership, I was just like a little bit more stressed the whole time.
00:37:50
Darin Tingey
Yeah, that's ah that's when you were AP, right?
00:37:51
Hayden
So yeah, I was assistant there and also zone leader there. And so I was just like, because I think it's so funny. They lorded the district leaders and leader assistants all in the same ward. I thought that was kind of an interesting choice, but it worked.
00:38:04
Darin Tingey
that Yeah, yeah.
00:38:04
Hayden
The ward was great.
00:38:06
Darin Tingey
Wait, so um was the AP at the end of your mission? or Or was that before or after ABAM?
00:38:11
Hayden
Yeah.
00:38:12
Darin Tingey
Was it after?
00:38:13
Hayden
so So before Abayang, I was zone leader with Versony and Sheffield. um Super fun.
00:38:19
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:38:20
Hayden
And then um then I went to Abayang and then came back and was assistant.
00:38:25
Darin Tingey
How was Abbey Young?
00:38:27
Hayden
ah Let me tell you, that was probably my favorite area because I was... the most like it was when I could speak the language really well was like training we were reopening it so as me and other samt were reopening the northern half and then the sisters were reopening like the middle half so sister silito and sister robison and like I was in the same intake as sister silito and other um samt was in the same intake as sister robison so it's like this cool like family dynamic um
00:38:54
Darin Tingey
Oh, cool.
00:38:59
Hayden
This was fun, we like had to the outer island feel, but then like on preparation days we just like go down and chill with the sisters and play volleyball with like members down there and stuff, so that was really fun.
00:39:09
Darin Tingey
That's really cool. Because like, was that the first time that sisters were on the Outer Island? Because I remember seeing when I was on the Marshall Islands side, like the map and like President had sisters on Outer Island. I was like, what?
00:39:19
Darin Tingey
They got sisters on Outer Island?
00:39:19
Hayden
What?
00:39:21
Darin Tingey
This is crazy, you know?
00:39:21
Hayden
Is that crazy? I think they had had them like back in the day. like
00:39:26
Darin Tingey
Sure.
00:39:26
Hayden
back when I don't think there were like laws or rules about anything. and and But now, they like yeah I don't know, it was the first time in a long time for sure. And so we lived in like a chapel house and Abbe Young is like crazy, it has like the two branches in a unit.
00:39:42
Hayden
Might even have three branches now. um
00:39:45
Darin Tingey
Church is just booming there, like probably the most out of any island, probably.
00:39:46
Hayden
Yeah. Oh, for sure. I always joked that they put the temple there because it's like close enough to Tarawa and it has a lot more land.
00:39:53
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:39:54
Hayden
um But yeah, and they have like full on, they they have the pavilion churches, you know what mean? Like that are like pavilion nimetang, like very, you know, like you would see at a campsite type of a thing with wooden floors and chairs and blackboards.
00:40:03
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:40:08
Hayden
Yeah.
00:40:09
Darin Tingey
Wow, they have that on ABN?
00:40:11
Hayden
Yeah, so they had that for the middle branch like the middle branch and the southern branch.
00:40:11
Darin Tingey
Dang.
00:40:14
Hayden
And then like the northern unit just got a like my classic maniabe. um
00:40:20
Darin Tingey
Yep.
00:40:21
Hayden
But it was really fun because we had like the northern unit, and then they needed more priesthood for the southern unit. And so like we were also in charge of the southern unit. So we'd work a week or two in the north, and then we'd like preparation day, like do our little transfer down to the south and work in that branch for a week and then do our transfer up to the north.
00:40:37
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:40:40
Hayden
um and it was funny working in the southern branch because literally like everyone had been in the branch presidency like not like everyone in the church like everyone in the village i feel like everyone was at one point a member and like had some sort of issue either with like swan the nodi or like you're like word of wisdom or like you know sidle whatever so that was pretty funny to be like
00:40:52
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:41:01
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:41:05
Hayden
hey, like, we're missionaries. are Like, yeah, I know. i was in the branch presidency with so-and-so. And it's like, we didn't even realize I, so-and-so was a member. So it was fun.
00:41:13
Darin Tingey
Right, right. Dang, so there's a lot of members on that band. I didn't know that.
00:41:17
Hayden
Oh, yeah. No, it's super fun and really cool. Lots of cool members too. Like, Yotaba was the branch president down south and he, like, was called, he was in the middle and they asked him to like move to be the branch president. was like, that is commitment.
00:41:31
Darin Tingey
Wow, he did it
00:41:32
Hayden
So he like moved, yeah, he like moved to another village to be the branch president.
00:41:36
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:41:38
Hayden
That was really cool. It's like kind of his missionary service in a sense.
00:41:42
Darin Tingey
That's really cool. Yeah, I feel like that's really hard to get someone to do. I mean, even and imagine here in America, it's like, hey, need to move ah from Orem to Salt Lake, you know?
00:41:51
Hayden
Right?
00:41:54
Darin Tingey
I mean, maybe not that far, but you get it my point. It's like, dang, that's a lot.
00:41:59
Hayden
Yeah.
00:42:00
Darin Tingey
te Move villages, and you don't even know if how that village is going accept you, you know?
00:42:05
Hayden
Yeah, it was kind of cool.
00:42:05
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:42:08
Hayden
And it was just a cool thing, yeah.
00:42:10
Darin Tingey
Did they ever put three sets of missionaries on Ebayong?
00:42:13
Hayden
They did, so when I was there, was and eventually they moved another set of elders and they took the south and then we stayed up in the north. um And that lasted for like a transfer, maybe like a transfer and a half. And then I think people just like went home and they just didn't have the replacement numbers.
00:42:30
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:42:31
Hayden
And so
00:42:35
Hayden
that's when they like, we had a trio for like a few days. That's why I had like Elder Pratt because he was one of the South missionaries.
00:42:43
Hayden
um And then we, yeah, then I came off of it. Yeah.
00:42:49
Darin Tingey
so
00:42:51
Hayden
yeah
00:42:51
Darin Tingey
So what was your what was your favorite memory of Abbeyam?
00:42:56
Hayden
Ooh,
00:42:57
Darin Tingey
And how would you describe the island? like You talked about the church part of it, but like culturally, Abbeyam.
00:43:01
Hayden
the culture. um I think,
00:43:06
Hayden
I don't know. Like, they they there's this, like, they eat soap, right? This is actually super funny. Oh, I wish I could. Do have it right here? where I can show you. I took a bar of soap from there, like, the packaging, and it was called...
00:43:18
Hayden
um I know this is just because it was bad translation because it of like Malaysian company, but it was like orange flavored soap instead of orange scented soap. And I thought that was hilarious.
00:43:26
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:43:27
Hayden
I was like, of course, that would have the orange scented soap. ah
00:43:31
Darin Tingey
ah Tell the story it's tell like kind of the story of how they ah became known for eating soap.
00:43:36
Hayden
Oh, yeah, they like sauce sauce.
00:43:38
Darin Tingey
For the listeners.
00:43:39
Hayden
My understanding is that the sailors were eating like blocks of cheese, like they had cheese with their thing and kiddapus people don't have cheese, obviously, so they didn't know what it was. But they, um and like the cheese and soap can look similar.
00:43:52
Darin Tingey
Cause the soap's like long, thick orange bars, right?
00:43:52
Hayden
um
00:43:56
Hayden
Yes, yes, good clarification.
00:43:57
Darin Tingey
Yeah, yeah.
00:43:57
Hayden
Yeah, the soap is like, the dope the guy, it's like a, use it for like washing.
00:44:01
Darin Tingey
it's It's a, yeah, it's a stick of soap that you just break off pieces as you, as you need.
00:44:06
Hayden
So it does look very edible. Like if it was brown, you would totally think it was chocolate. Like and it's just the shape of it is appetizing, I guess.
00:44:11
Darin Tingey
Tor, yeah, yeah.
00:44:15
Hayden
But they the joke is that they they someone found it and like thought that it was cheese and ate it and was like, oh, it's so bad.
00:44:22
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:44:22
Hayden
Yeah, I think there's so funny, like the name, like things that you hear about, like another one was like the the the reason dogs are called kameh is because like they hear people say come here and they were just imitating it or like the other word is like kiri, right?
00:44:32
Darin Tingey
Yeah, come here. Come here, Donna.
00:44:36
Hayden
The kiri. So they saw that the dog would steal food and they'd call it kiri. So they called it kiri. Kiri. um
00:44:45
Darin Tingey
It's funny how they adopt English words. My favorite was always like, and I think I've shared this before, but like, when they'd say an English word and you're like, you know, it's, you know, it's an English word, right? And they'd be like, no, it's not. It's a kid of this word.
00:44:55
Hayden
and
00:44:56
Darin Tingey
You're like, no, it's an English word.
00:44:58
Hayden
They trust me. They trust me.
00:45:00
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:45:01
Hayden
are My favorite memory. um This maybe isn't my favorite, but it's one that I put down. it was just like the dentist came, which was really cool. And he like was just doing free dental care for people. It's like pulling teeth, like care that like, you know, so people, you know, because they just have, if you have bad teeth, you just like let them rot and people just can't eat food and it hurts and stuff.
00:45:22
Hayden
um So it's really cool.
00:45:22
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:45:23
Hayden
He just like, was pulling teeth and like applying fluoride for kids and stuff. And he was in a Catholic mania bay, which had like a water tank that was donated by the Church Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which I thought was COVID.
00:45:38
Hayden
um And then um we went and translated with him a few days. And there was this one time like we were gonna have to bike like two hours to get there because we're in the Southern Village. But I was like, we should really go. Alder Samt was like, no, because we should work. And I was like, I feel like we should really go.
00:45:54
Hayden
So we went after like praying about it and we got picked up by truck so we didn't have to bike, which was so cool.
00:46:00
Darin Tingey
Nice.
00:46:00
Hayden
And then we got there and like had the whole day like helping him. And then the minister or the Catholic version of a minister trees yeah the the catikis, no, you got it.
00:46:09
Darin Tingey
Get the geese, get the geese. Yeah, yeah.
00:46:12
Hayden
The catikis, he came and like, he was introduced, we were able to like introduce him and they have this whole like touching, like we're both believers in Christ and like, which was just like a really cool because feel like religion is such a defining feature of kid of his culture that like

Interfaith Connections and Reflections

00:46:25
Hayden
having those bridges was just really cool to see.
00:46:25
Darin Tingey
Totally.
00:46:29
Hayden
um So thought it was really cool. And then my other favorite memory from there is I was getting transferred off and the plane came early or was rescheduled and we didn't hear about it.
00:46:40
Hayden
And so someone on on a motorcycle runs up to the Northern Village, tells me like, you have to leave now. And we're like in the middle of a farewell dinner or like farewell lunch or whatever. So I like...
00:46:51
Hayden
grab my suitcase or whatever and jump on the back of their motorcycle without my companions and like like bye there was a trio so like they had each other but they're like sprint biking behind us and as we're going by there was a hotel on the island and it had caught fire and so that was like burning down it was like a crazy like whole like the world is ending what's happening but it was just me getting transferred off i thought was really funny um then i got
00:46:55
Darin Tingey
You're like, see, I gotta go.
00:47:10
Darin Tingey
Oh my gosh.
00:47:15
Darin Tingey
But you made it.
00:47:16
Hayden
and
00:47:16
Darin Tingey
You made it to the the the plane.
00:47:17
Hayden
We made it. We did. it was, I mean, I think they had like a freak out moment because then I got down there and sat there for a while because the plane was not there.
00:47:24
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:47:26
Hayden
In fact, long enough that they got down from with their bikes and were able to say goodbye and all that stuff.
00:47:26
Darin Tingey
but
00:47:32
Darin Tingey
That's funny. Um, was the dentist that you mentioned, was he American?
00:47:34
Hayden
So that was fun.
00:47:37
Hayden
He's American. Yeah. He's a member. He's like from Utah, I think.
00:47:40
Darin Tingey
Oh, cool.
00:47:40
Hayden
um So just kind of a crazy wanted to go serve people type of a thing.
00:47:45
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:47:45
Hayden
Yeah.
00:47:46
Darin Tingey
I mean, Kiribati is a good spot, like, as you mentioned, the rotting of the teeth, right? Like, what is it? emmakamaka wem Right?
00:47:52
Hayden
Yeah.
00:47:52
Darin Tingey
Or something like that?
00:47:52
Hayden
No, it's terrible.
00:47:53
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:47:53
Hayden
the
00:47:55
Darin Tingey
I'd always tell the kids that, right? Like, ah maham we because they'd smile and their teeth are just all rotted out. And Like, one, they don't brush their teeth, but two, like, they're drinking sugar water.
00:48:07
Darin Tingey
Like, but anyone that ever goes to Kitabas, you sit down and they're like, here, we're going to get you a drink.
00:48:07
Hayden
yeah
00:48:12
Darin Tingey
You know, they get out their water they boiled that smells bad. now No offense to Kitabas people, but, you know, it smells It's brown.
00:48:18
Hayden
no way it's terrible
00:48:21
Darin Tingey
And they just, like, scoop, like... More scoops than you think are going to go into that water. They just keep scooping sugar, raw sugar. it's So it's not separated between white and brown. It's just raw.
00:48:33
Darin Tingey
And they stir it up and they give it to you. And that's what you drink. so you like, i mean, if any missionary doesn't come up with a cavity, like it's impressive because you're just drinking sugar water, which I mean, in America, we drink soda and whatever, which is same thing, but it just feels, it feels more,
00:48:48
Hayden
but like That's like your only liquid refreshment.
00:48:50
Darin Tingey
Right. Yeah, there's, yeah, exactly. You're not having fresh water ever. It's, it's sugar water.
00:48:56
Hayden
Yeah.
00:48:56
Darin Tingey
Um, so that was funny.
00:48:57
Hayden
So yeah.
00:48:59
Darin Tingey
So, um, we've got like, we've got like, uh, seven minutes left here as when you talked about, maybe we talked about you being AP for a little bit.
00:49:00
Hayden
Better Milo.
00:49:03
Hayden
Oh, that's crank.
00:49:09
Darin Tingey
Like, what was that like? And did you get to go to any other islands as Yeah.
00:49:15
Hayden
Yeah, um so it was super fun I got to go to a couple outer islands. So I went to Tab North with Elder Morfonios. We like did a, both of us went out there and did exchanges with the elders out there.
00:49:27
Darin Tingey
Cool.
00:49:27
Hayden
um That was really cool. Definitely has more cargo than Tab South, but also like is super huge and spread out. So I felt like Yeah, I almost felt like it was more Ibuk than Tab South because it was just like no one was there.
00:49:43
Darin Tingey
There was like nobody.
00:49:43
Hayden
Like, yeah, like we're biking for ages.
00:49:44
Darin Tingey
You're like, where is everybody?
00:49:47
Hayden
So that was really cool to get to see that. And then the one that was like different for me ah was Putaritari. I got to go out there with Elder Tiki de Bes.
00:49:58
Hayden
Shoot. To his family out there. um So we went, he was like, he was his own leader. So we went out with him um because we kind of felt bad about abandoning our area for like an entire week.
00:50:09
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:50:09
Hayden
So older Moconios stayed. um And we went out there. They had tons of bananas there. thirty thirty and
00:50:16
Darin Tingey
super green right
00:50:17
Hayden
So green, so moist. Like, so there was like, it was always, I thought it was just raining constantly, which was good because was cooler, but it was also like, ah didn't know how to deal with it being wet.
00:50:28
Darin Tingey
yeah muddy and that's the marsh islands for you if you wanted to peek into the marsh islands always raining
00:50:28
Hayden
Like, anyway, that was interesting.
00:50:34
Hayden
Yeah, I was listening to like the other ones and I was like, wow, I am a little bit grateful maybe that I didn't have to deal with Marshall Islands, the atmosphere or like the climate.
00:50:43
Darin Tingey
ha
00:50:47
Darin Tingey
lots of rain
00:50:47
Hayden
But yeah, that was really cool.
00:50:50
Hayden
We got to visit there. One, I wish I had been able to, we had planned to go to Abameyameh, like revisit it. But for some reason we like felt like we shouldn't.
00:50:57
Darin Tingey
here
00:50:59
Hayden
So we didn't go, which would have been really cool to get to revisit.
00:51:00
Darin Tingey
you're like oh man my first island like i really wanted to go probably
00:51:04
Hayden
And it was like I was like, I feel like the one that felt held back too, so it was kind of weird. i don't know if it was just so, but that was really
00:51:11
Darin Tingey
You're better man than me. i would have been like, if President like, hey, whatever ones you feel right, go. I'd be like, yeah, I feel like we should go to all of them.
00:51:17
Hayden
cool.
00:51:17
Darin Tingey
yeah like
00:51:18
Hayden
I feel like we're just, we need to make a little bit joke.
00:51:21
Darin Tingey
I think we need to see every island. Did you go to Miami?
00:51:26
Hayden
my and and that one so I always thought Mayanna sounded cool because I think Elder Songlapoldu went there and they were MTC companions. And so that was really fun. He would always talk about it.
00:51:35
Darin Tingey
But you never got to go as AP? Okay.
00:51:36
Hayden
No, I didn't. So it was just those two islands, just those ones.
00:51:39
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:51:39
Hayden
um We did a lot. We sent the zone we started sending the zone leaders out um because we assigned the zone um like them to their zones, if that makes sense.
00:51:49
Darin Tingey
Right, yeah.
00:51:49
Hayden
Because we were trying to... like At that point, we were just trying to do like more communication because sometimes you're like out on the outer islands and you're just like kind of forgotten because like you know the assistants were supposed to keep in contact with you, but they have other live things to do.
00:52:03
Darin Tingey
Right, yeah.
00:52:04
Hayden
So we pondered off to the zone leaders. So hopefully that helped or maybe it made it worse. um But it was really fun to get to do that. we went We did a lot of exchanges around Totterweather. So I got to go to like Baso, which was like a whole cultural experience, because they're Baso town.
00:52:18
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:52:21
Hayden
One time we were coming back from Beso, because you know like APs and zone leaders would like drive people places?
00:52:27
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:52:27
Hayden
and the causeway wasn't done and i was driving. I was a bad driver. Actually, i have multiple driving stories that are bad. But this one, i was driving and it had just rained the night before and this car waved us on.
00:52:41
Hayden
It was like an open bed truck with workers in it. And so I like naturally speed up to go around people, right? So I sped up to go around them, but I hit a puddle and splashed them and i went like out the other side of the window and covered all the people in the truck.
00:52:56
Hayden
And they like slam on their gas and like cut us off. And then I got out and they were like, oh, it's missionaries. like, we're nice. But they called the mission president and he walks into the mission office later that day and he's like, Causeway, truck.
00:53:10
Hayden
And they had the zone leaders go in. And I was like, it's totally me. I'm the problem.
00:53:14
Darin Tingey
No way.
00:53:14
Hayden
Then he called me in. He's like, Elder Winnig. And I had to like call and apologize to the company. like, I'm sorry for splashing your employees. I didn't mean to. Oh, so that was bad.
00:53:24
Hayden
The other time was when I was zone leader and I was driving and the APs were in the back of the truck because that's just what you did, right? You sat in the back of the truck, like the bed.
00:53:33
Darin Tingey
Yeah, right.
00:53:34
Hayden
And I went over a speed bump and almost launched them out. And so they like pulled me aside and said that my driving privileges may be on short leashes.
00:53:43
Darin Tingey
That's so good. is so good. Those ski bumps are gnarly, man.
00:53:48
Hayden
They are.
00:53:48
Darin Tingey
I got a headache the first time was on that while. I was like, oh my gosh, every 20 feet it felt like. like I was dehydrated too. It made it even worse.
00:53:58
Hayden
iphilia
00:54:00
Darin Tingey
but what a Last few questions on the last three minutes here. So you mentioned your favorite area, but um what was your favorite like cultural thing about Kiribati, your favorite food, and maybe a quick spiritual thing that you ah about your mission that you remember and that's close to you?
00:54:27
Hayden
Totally. um So favorite cultural thing, this might be a hot take, but I love that they give you so many like drinks, like every house you go to, they like give you a drink. I just think it's like something that you can, kind that I could apply in my life, you know, where it's like someone comes over like, oh, like have a drink. And then it forces a conversation as opposed to the whole like,
00:54:51
Hayden
oh, hey, take care of business, get out of here type of a thing.
00:54:53
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:54:55
Hayden
And then also just that like they put so much care into it. Like sometimes the things they put into the drink to make them taste better, right? Like they put the sugar and then like to like if they were being fancy, they'd put like the sweet condensed milk.
00:55:08
Hayden
And then like sometimes they put like the milk powder and the Milo. So i was like a whole concoction.
00:55:12
Darin Tingey
the Milo. Yeah.
00:55:14
Hayden
the Milo, honestly, I still miss Milo. The Milo is so good.
00:55:17
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Milo's good. Yeah.
00:55:18
Hayden
um I think that was really cool. Just like it shows that touches on them just being so loving and caring and then also just taking time for sure.
00:55:23
Darin Tingey
So at the hospitality, yeah.
00:55:26
Hayden
um And then the other thing, oh, favorite food. I've actually thought so hard about this, but I have a whole meal that have presented. It's actually not that big.
00:55:36
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:55:37
Hayden
They, I don't know. Did you ever have fish patties? They like pick the bone off like, and then like make it into a like a little patty.
00:55:40
Darin Tingey
Yes.
00:55:42
Darin Tingey
They put it with, uh,
00:55:45
Darin Tingey
Actually, I don't know if I ever ever did. i was thinking of, I thought you were talking about almost like the chicken nugget type of, you know, they put the bread, like the breading with it. You know what I'm Okay.
00:55:54
Hayden
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, not that one. Like, they would take all the bones out. So it's, like, the bonefish, so it's super yummy meat, but there's no bones in it.
00:56:01
Darin Tingey
Right.
00:56:02
Hayden
And then they would fry that. And then, like, the panime, so, like, fried breadfruit.
00:56:07
Darin Tingey
Hmm.
00:56:07
Hayden
I had that a bunch on Abe Young and Abe Meme. And I was, like, this is the best. They just know. I was manifesting it, maybe. Maybe God was, like, this is your way of surviving, Hayden. But it was so, so good. I loved to those.
00:56:20
Hayden
Yeah.
00:56:22
Darin Tingey
The Penny Mae so good. I love Penny Mae. Oh my gosh.
00:56:24
Hayden
Oh, that's so good.
00:56:26
Darin Tingey
I could that for days.
00:56:27
Hayden
Right? and it's good for you because it's like yeah it's like a fruit, you know? Right?
00:56:31
Darin Tingey
Yeah, right, right.
00:56:34
Hayden
um That's good. And Sway is really good. But yeah, i don't know. I feel like that has to be thrown out there, having been from time south. And then spiritual thing. um I don't know. I think that just like the, there was a time when I was assistant and like, I was, it's great area, great companions, like loved them to death.

Mission Impact and Responsibilities

00:56:58
Hayden
um But like getting really frustrated with like, there's office work and then there's always like, like missionary, like helping other missionaries work where like, I always felt like I was never doing enough there because there's just a lot of missionaries and like, so I just always felt like we weren't doing it right.
00:57:16
Hayden
And so this one time we pulled off, this gonna sound like a sad spiritual story, but it's like a spiritual story.
00:57:16
Darin Tingey
Mm-hmm.
00:57:22
Hayden
We pull off, um we're going to a meeting with president and I was really frustrated because I was like, we have done literally no missionary work all day.
00:57:22
Darin Tingey
Okay.
00:57:27
Hayden
So let's stop the car and like pull off and like give a Book of Mormon to someone. And so we pulled off and we're trying to talk to people and we finally get someone that's like listening to us. And I'm like, this is great.
00:57:39
Hayden
They seem so engaged. And then they like said something that was like really off. And the person next to us turns and they're like, they are deaf and blind. And I was like,
00:57:51
Hayden
i like I broke down.
00:57:52
Darin Tingey
Yeah.
00:57:52
Hayden
I didn't even say anything else. I just walked back to the car and we like got in and I was like sad and crying and all their more for me. I was like, you know Elder Winnick? Even though we're not changing people, like it may not feel like you're changing people, you're like changing me. And I thought that was really cool. just like Sometimes you like feel like you're not doing something on a mission, but like even on the hardest days, like you're still having influence on people and people still see what you're doing. And like not just on a mission, but in life in general. Yeah.
00:58:19
Hayden
even when it feels like you're not accomplishing things, like you still are.
00:58:20
Darin Tingey
yeah
00:58:22
Hayden
And I thought that was kind of my key takeaway from my mission is that that.
00:58:28
Darin Tingey
I feel like, I mean, you served in a lot of leadership roles. So like you had the extra responsibility of not only like, you know, being a missionary, teaching about Christ, but then, yeah, like you said, taking care of the missionaries, taking care of the office work.
00:58:42
Darin Tingey
You know, I didn't, I didn't have to do any of the office work ever. had to experience that. was so grateful I had to experience that. And like, I was the only district leader or whatever. So like, I feel like I had a little more, got to focus a little more on the work, but you had the extra stuff, which can be ah exhausting as a missionary.
00:59:02
Darin Tingey
um But like you, like literally everyone has high praises for you. So you know you did it right because everyone's like, Hayden's the man, other way it's the man. Like you, you can't dive on the pod. He's just a total

Reflections and Gratitude

00:59:15
Darin Tingey
stud. So I'm so grateful you came on because you had an awesome mission. I'm like, to be able to do like three outer islands, um two gray areas on Tarawa and like BAP, like you totally had like a full circle mission um and got to see like a lot of a lot of fruits your labor and to go I'm sure you're going back to kid of us even like a couple years ago to be able to see all that again was probably incredible.
00:59:37
Hayden
Yeah, it was. I definitely feel like I got like the best mission, best companions, mission president, best leaders and stuff, examples. It was just so cool. Everyone in the mission is just so... was looking at people, like the whole lists of names, and I was like, how? Just like everyone is so awesome.
00:59:55
Hayden
So it's such a blessing to serve there.
00:59:56
Darin Tingey
Yeah. Yeah. So cool. And hopefully, you know, we do another mission reunion. I didn't get to go to the last one. I was, I was gone, but um hopefully but we do another one and I get to come.
01:00:07
Darin Tingey
So that's
01:00:07
Hayden
Hopefully, I hear they're coming next year is what I heard. So that would be really cool.
01:00:12
Darin Tingey
also the whisperings I've heard and I'm back in Utah, so I can, I can be available, but well, Hayden, thanks for coming on.
01:00:17
Hayden
Good.
01:00:18
Darin Tingey
This was an amazing episode of the islands podcast.
01:00:23
Hayden
Thanks so much for having me. You're amazing.
01:00:25
Darin Tingey
Thanks for that.
