Speaker
the craft. So get in, witches, for part one of a two-part series on magical timing, this time focusing on structured planetary timing.

Pop Culture and Witchcraft

00:00:40
Speaker
Mike and I went to the movies the other day to see that new Sam Raimi movie, Send Help. Have you seen the preview for that movie yet? It is. it was pretty good. um It's like, has Rachel McAdams in it. And um I don't know this guy's name, but the guy that was in the the All Too Well 10 minute version music video, the Taylor Swift one. um whatever that guy's name is, they were in it and it is really good.
00:01:09
Speaker
You said called Send Help? Send Help. Yeah. It's really cute. Like, it I mean, it's good. It's a very, it's very Sam Raimi, but it's very good. Like the premise is, so like Rachel McAdams is kind of like this frumpy data girl at this corporate office and her boss is They eventually end up on an island together and it is, it's really good. So you should watch it whenever it comes out. Everybody should watch it. By the time this comes out, it's going to be May. So it's probably going to be available to rent. Or stream. Or stream. So maybe go watch it whenever it it is playing in your area because I really enjoyed that movie. It was, it was good.
00:01:51
Speaker
I saved it so that I can look it up later. Yes. There was also um and that new Game of Thrones show. Have you seen anything about that?
00:02:03
Speaker
Mm-mm. It's can't remember what it's called, but it's something about this really tall-ass knight. It's not a bad show. But Mike and have written off anything George R.R. Martin.
00:02:18
Speaker
It's sad. ah It really is. like one minute Mike and I were talking last night when we were watching it because they allude in the show the theme song we'll play from the original Game of Thrones and I'm like...
00:02:31
Speaker
um I wish that he had finished those books first of all. But that second of all, I wish that the writers and producers and directors of the show didn't fuck it up yeah like yeah yeah you can't tell me this is what he wanted he didn't want that he didn't but and then he was still gonna write the book but then he said he wasn't gonna change anything which pissed everyone off and then he within the last i don't know six months i think was like i'm not doing it
00:03:02
Speaker
hu Cool. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. We get somebody to finish it for you because you fucked everything. Literally committed to this entire huge ass series because those books are fucking huge. yep Only to not get it finished. and And then to also like be executive producers on like this show that's released now. And then the other one, um I can't think of what it's called, but the one with the two girls house of the dragon. Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:32
Speaker
I keep wanting to say way of the dragon and I'm pretty sure it was like a samurai movie. um But anyway. Yeah. No, I, I just, I don't want to do it anymore. Yeah. He writes really fucking long books to do that to people.
00:03:50
Speaker
Right. Like I had to be putting out other like book series in between too. It was just infuriating. So yeah we are also not in the same boat, but kind of in the same boat in that we've been waiting like 10 years for Patrick Rothfuss to put out the third book in the Wise Man's Fear series, the way The Name of the Wind or whatever series. So we have the two books, also big fucking huge fantasy books. Yeah. And it's been 10 years.
00:04:22
Speaker
I think it's been over 10 years since he released book two. Book three is written and then he edited it into oblivion apparently and then scrapped that and went back to the original. And so now here we are still waiting.
00:04:36
Speaker
I hate that. I could just, I understand that like to be an author, doesn't, takes a very specific person. It takes a very specific vision. It's a lot of hard work. Not everybody can be an author or should be an author.
00:04:51
Speaker
However, you cannot do that to your readers. No. It's criminal. we should lock you up. Literally. Straight to jail. But we're not talking about unfinished fantasy series that really grind our gears.
00:05:08
Speaker
We're not. What are we talking about today?

Understanding Magical Timing

00:05:11
Speaker
We are talking about magical timing in witchcraft, which this was a very long episode. So all that to say, we're splitting it into two because our notes were so long that, and we know like if our notes are like over 10 pages, you're here for at least an hour. least.
00:05:34
Speaker
Bare minimal. Yeah. We decided we were split this in two. So this is part one. Yeah. And we have another part. part coming up next week so Yeah. you're welcome oh with that though just a quick note on our references in the show notes we have lately been running into character or word count limit issues for some of the topics that have a lot of resources so for our notes We were able to both find a ton of information on the website Spells8 across like several different articles that aren't all going to be listed individually in the show notes. But if you've been listening for any given time, you've likely heard us reference this website more than once. It's a great resource. It's easily searchable and it has a ton of information. So the website itself will be listed in in the resources section. not the individual articles, but know that it does have a ton of articles that cover this topic.
00:06:32
Speaker
Even just as an example as to why we're not listing this, whenever I get into some planetary timing for the days of the week, Literally, it's at one article for Monday, one article for Tuesday, one article. that's just that's That's just seven articles right there. That's not including any of the other things that we're covering. So it just it was way too much. So just go to Spells 8 or even just Google search or however you want to search Spells 8 and whatever related to this episode. If you want to see the article we pulled our reference from, that way you can get more information.
00:07:05
Speaker
Yeah. And then just to give you a little bit of an intro into this, in witchcraft, timing is often considered just as important as intention and technique. Many believe that certain moments carry an inherent energy that can enhance magical workings. Whether it's the cycles of the moon, the turning of the seasons, or specific times of day, these moments are thought to hold unique power.
00:07:33
Speaker
Magical timing is deeply connected to natural rhythms and life transitions, where the energy of the universe is said to align with key moments of transformation in spiritual work.
00:07:44
Speaker
The bulk of this episode, we're going to be talking about structured and planetary timing in magical workings. And so starting us off, I'm going to talk about the days of the week or the planetary days and And in magic, each day is named after something that rules it. And each day has a planet that's associated with it, as well as plants and crystals that correspond with it as well.
00:08:09
Speaker
So as far as the days of the week and their planetary associations, Monday is ruled by the moon and the day is also named after the moon. Monday is derived from the Middle English Monan Day, which was originally translated from the Latin word dais lune, which means day of the moon.
00:08:28
Speaker
The moon represents the mother and magical powers of women. This day corresponds with the qualities of compassion, healing, nurturing, love, dreams, and psychic abilities.
00:08:40
Speaker
As for crystals, the moon is in general associated with moonstone and pearls, and plants that correspond with the moon are night-blooming jasmine and moonflower. Mondays in particular are associated with clear quartz, selenite, aquamarine, fluorite, geodes, moonstone, and mother of pearl. And as for herbs associated specifically with Monday, this would include wintergreen, peppermint, catnip, comfrey, sage, and chamomile.
00:09:08
Speaker
The colors associated both with the moon and Mondays are silver, blue, and white. And as far as workings tied to Monday and the moon, Mondays are good for spells involving beginnings, planning, and any home-related spell work like energy cleansing, decorating, and yard work.
00:09:26
Speaker
Monday is ah also a great day for workings that are centered on clearing paths or obstacles and for establishing contact with the spirit world. Deities that are associated with Monday are Selene, Arianrod, Thoth, Artemis, Diana, and Luna.
00:09:42
Speaker
Tuesday is ruled by Mars and named after the Norse god Tyr, who is the god of war, justice, and was invoked by those for victory in battle. Today in Romance languages, Tuesday is the day of Mars, like Mardi in French.

Tuesdays are the perfect days for any workings that involves making changes to your lifestyle, banishing bad habits, or starting new endeavors. Magic revolving Tuesday is best for spells that revolve around justice, strength, courage, war, or even conflict resolution.
00:10:29
Speaker
Deities that are associated with Tuesday are Athena, Aries, the Morgan, Mars, Lilith, and Tyr, as I mentioned. Wednesday is ruled by Mercury and named after the Norse god Woden, also known as Odin. The origin of Wednesday goes back to the Old English Wodenus Deg or the Middle English Wednes Dai or De, I'm not sure. It's spelled funny though, ah meaning the day of Woden. And then Romance languages like French, Mercury means the day of Mercury.
00:11:03

00:11:40
Speaker
Deities that are associated with Wednesday are Mercury, Hermes, Odin, Athena, and Minerva. Thursday is ruled by Jupiter and named after the Norse god Thor. In most Romance languages, Thursday is named after the planet and god Jupiter. and An example of this would be Judi in French.
00:12:00
Speaker
The colors associated with Thursdays are blue, green, and purple. Crystals associated with Thursday are turquoise, amethyst, lapis lazuli, tiger's eye, peridot, and suculite.
00:12:13
Speaker
As for plants, Thursday is associated with cinnamon, clove, sage, fig, hysop, nutmeg, star anise, zinc foil, honeysuckle, musk, oak moss, thorns, garlic, and beech.
00:12:28
Speaker
Magical workings best done on Thursdays are those relating to protection, strength, and anything tied to storms. Additional powerful workings for Thursdays include spells for abundance, strength, prosperity, wealth, and healing.
00:12:43
Speaker
Deities associated with Thursdays are Curnunos, Gaia, Juno, Jupiter, Poseidon, Pan, Osiris, Thor, and Zeus. Friday is ruled by the planet of Venus, named after the Norse goddess Frigg, who is the goddess of marriage, motherhood, and clairvoyance. The colors associated with Friday include aqua and pink, and the crystals associated with Fridays are jade, pink tourmaline, rose quartz, aventurine, emerald, amber, and peridot.
00:13:15
Speaker
Plants and herbs associated with Friday include rose, violet, apples, myrtle, saffron, sandalwood, feverfew, raspberry, strawberry, thyme, and birch. Magic associated with Friday should center around love, sex, romance, the hearth and the home, conceiving children, and pregnancy and the family.
00:13:37
Speaker
Deities associated with Fridays are Freya, Freyr, Venus, Aphrodite, Isis, Hathor, and Eros. Saturday is ruled by Saturn, and this is this planet is associated with organization, authority, limitations, wisdom, level-headedness, and hard work.

The colors associated with Saturday include purple and black, and the plants and herbs associated with Saturday are cypress, hemp, ivy, morning glory, patchouli, myrrh, hyacinth, peppermint, and thyme.
00:14:16
Speaker
Saturdays are the perfect days for working centered on banishing, wisdom, and self-improvement. It's a time to cleanse, a time to remove any problematic energies, and to protect.
00:14:27
Speaker
Deities associated with Saturday include Hecate, Bast, Hestia, Hades, and of course Saturn. Sunday, lastly, because I'm sure you're tired of me talking about the days of the week, and I am also tired of talking about the days of the week, um is rolled by the sun, which is associated with vitality, good health, optimism, strength, success, victory, life purpose, and pride.
00:14:55

Crystals associated with the sun include gold, tiger's eye, amber, carnelian, diamond, and citrine. The colors for Sunday are yellow and gold. 00:15:34
Speaker
And as tired of hearing about the days of the week as you might be, you're about to be real tired about hearing about the moon phases. Look, take notes, okay? Pull out a notebook and take some notes because this is all really good information. It's just a lot of information. It is. It's a lot. It's a lot.
00:15:49
Speaker
So we did an entire series covering the moon phases from episode 122 to 125. So if you want a more in-depth like version of this, and that like what we're covering today, make sure to go back and listen to those episodes.
00:16:04
Speaker
But what we're going to be discussing today is just the magical timing of each of these moon phases.

Moon Phases and Magic

00:16:09
Speaker
So for the new moon, this is when the side of the moon that is facing the earth is fully dark. And the best way to think about this phase is to think like the seed is planted.
00:16:22
Speaker
During this phase, magical workings should be centered on new beginnings, rebirth, setting intentions, shadow work, divination, and planting those seeds.
00:16:32
Speaker
In witchcraft, the new moon is when we should be setting intentions for the coming cycle. So things like personal goals, growth, or even spells for new beginnings.
00:16:42
Speaker
For the waxing moon, this is the period of when we start to see that little sliver of the moon from the right side growing larger until it transitions into the full moon.
00:16:56
Speaker
And metaphorically, we can think of this phase as like your plant has officially sprouted and it's starting to grow. Suggested magic during the waxing phase of the moon is broken down into three categories.
00:17:09
Speaker
So the first is during the waxing crescent, and this is where your practice could include growing your goals, attracting, building momentum, success, increasing energy, And starting to take small steps toward your end goal.
00:17:23
Speaker
During the first quarter or the half moon, your focus should shift to overcoming obstacles, taking decisive action, motivation, making decisions, and really building your courage.
00:17:37
Speaker
And last, during the waxing gibbous, your practice should then be looking at refining those goals, honing strength, increasing your power, enhancing any existing magic, and also practicing a little bit of self-love.
00:17:52
Speaker
The time from the waxing crescent to the first quarter should be used to begin charging energy, taking first steps, and even starting concrete actions. And from the waxing gibbous to just before the full moon,
00:18:05
Speaker
Your practice should shift into building momentum, alignment, strengthening your intentions, and as a time to tune your tools and your energy. For the full moon, this is the phase where we can see the whole moon in all of her glory. And we can look at this phase as being that our plant has now flowered and it's fruiting. The full moon is looked at as a period that is the height of energy and power. And it's recognized even outside of witchcraft too. So like an example of this is that oftentimes hospitals, ERs, and inpatient facilities will anticipate heightened activity when it's a full moon outside.
00:18:46
Speaker
So during this phase, your practice should be focused on reaching peak energy, clarity, illumination, charging things, gratitude, manifestation, and healing. The full moon is the phase within the moon cycle that is perfect really for any form of magical workings.
00:19:04
Speaker
This means that you should be looking towards big manifestation workings, transformation rituals, practicing divination, charging your crystals and even making moon water, releasing any illusions and bringing truths to light.
00:19:19
Speaker
For the waning phase, this phase is when the light, which is the visible side of the moon, begins to shrink until it's just a little sliver on the left side now before going into the dark moon phase.
00:19:31
Speaker
The dark moon coincides with the new moon and metaphorically, it would be the end of the season where our plant is like now starting to wither and it's fading.
00:19:42
Speaker
So just like with the waxing moon, the waning moon can also be broken up into three categories. The first is going to be during the waning gibbous. Your practice should be focused on reflection, gratitude, tying up any loose ends, fine-tuning your goals and your intentions, and releasing and banishing negativity.
00:20:03
Speaker
The third quarter or the half moon should be a time of releasing, purifying, banishing any bad habits, cutting cords, ending cycles, and clearing out anything that feels stagnant. And the waning crescent moon is for rest, introspection, preparing for new cycles, calming and relaxation, and for energy work for renewal.
00:20:27
Speaker
The time from the waning gibbous to the third quarter is when you should be reflecting on what's working, letting go of what isn't working, and releasing any of those unwanted attachments.
00:20:39
Speaker
The time from the waning crescent to the dark moon should be a time that you rest, you do inner work, shadow work, purge, cleanse, and prepare for rebirth again.
00:20:51
Speaker
And then the dark moon, this is when the moon has come full circle and it's now going back into that new moon phase where once again, the side of the moon facing the earth is completely dark.
00:21:03
Speaker
Metaphorically, this phase would be the death of our plant. But new seeds are now being sown in the new moon phase and we're starting all over

Zodiac Moons

00:21:11
Speaker
again. Another magical timing that you can work with are the lunar signs or the zodiac moons. And we were talking about working with the moon in this way, specifically with the zodiac moons. We're referring to what zodiac sign is transiting at any given time.
00:21:29
Speaker
So according to Moon and Mushroom Magic, as the moon moves through the sky, it spends roughly 2.5 days in each zodiac sign. and Because of this, the moon's astrological phase changes 12 times per cycle. So depending on what sign the moon is in will affect the energetic theme of that moon.
00:21:50
Speaker
So if you hear for instance, moon in Aries, whether that be the new moon, full moon, whatever. This means that the energy associated with that moon is very bold, action-oriented, and impulsive. And this is best for courage spells, motivation, breaking stagnation, quick magic, and new ventures.
00:22:12
Speaker
If you hear that a moon is in Taurus, This would mean that the energy surrounding that moon would be grounded, sensual, and stable, and it's best for money magic, home blessings, beauty rituals, and manifesting comfort and security.
00:22:27
Speaker
If the moon is in Gemini, this corresponds with the energy of being curious and social and is best for communication spells, networking, and spells involving choices or duties. If a moon is in Cancer, the energy associated with that is emotional and nurturing and protective, and it's best for home and hearth magic, ancestor work, emotional healing, and intuition rituals.
00:22:50
Speaker
If the moon is in Leo, the energy associated with that would be competent, expressive, and heart-centered, and it's best for magic that centers on leadership, glamour magic, self-confidence, self-love, creativity, and any working centered on making you shine.
00:23:07
Speaker
If a moon is in Virgo, the energy associated with that moon would be practical, meticulous, and health-focused, and it's best for cleansing, organizing, healing, daily rituals, or anything that requires precision.
00:23:21
Speaker
If the moon is in Libra, the energy associated with that would be harmonious, beauty-loving, and justice-seeking. And it's best for love and relationship work, balance, legal issues, charm, and diplomacy.
00:23:35
Speaker
If the moon is in Scorpio, the energy associated with this moon would be intense, transformative, and secretive, and it's best for shadow work, cord cutting, deep healing, sex magic, and banishing work. If the moon is in Sagittarius, the energy associated with this moon would be expansive, optimistic, truth-seeking, and it's best for travel magic, wisdom, vision setting, banishing, limitations, and freedom rituals.
00:24:03
Speaker
the moon is in Capricorn, the energy associated with that moon would be ambitious, disciplined, and strategic, and it's best for career and long-term goals, banishment of self-doubt, and building strong foundations. If the moon is in Aquarius, the energy associated with that moon would be innovative, rebellious, and future-focused, and it's best for text-based spells, community breaking patterns, and calling in fresh perspectives.
00:24:29
Speaker
And lastly, if the moon is in Pisces, the energy associated with that moon would be dreamy, psychic, and spiritual. And it's best for divination, dream work, creativity, connection to spirit guides, and emotional release.

Retrograde Periods

00:24:43
Speaker
So now I'm going to very briefly talk about retrograde because we did an entire full episode covering the various retrogrades for episode 112. So So make sure you go back and listen to that for a ton more information. But just briefly, retrogrades, particularly mercury retrograde, are seen as times when energy can feel disrupted, making them ideal for inner work, reflection,
00:25:12
Speaker
and clearing past issues rather than starting new projects. During retrograde periods, your practice may want to focus on redoing, revisiting, or realigning your intentions, as it's a time to revisit past goals and refine them rather than pushing forward with new endeavors.
00:25:32
Speaker
Retrogrades are also seen as opportunities to release old energies, habits, or patterns, making them powerful times for cleansing rituals and banishing work. The energy of retrogrades can bring hidden truths to the surface, offering a time for divination and deep introspection, where the focus is more on self-discovery and healing. And depending on the planet that's in retrograde, different aspects of life will be affected. So for example, Venus retrograde for relationships, Mars for action. And for this, you might want to tailor your magical timing accordingly to harness the energy for specific goals. And we did cover a lot of this in episode 112. So if magical timing surrounding retrogrades is something that you're interested in, make sure to go back and listen to that episode. Mm-hmm.

Eclipses in Magic

00:26:30
Speaker
And lastly, to tie up this episode, I'm going to talk about eclipses also very briefly. in many traditions, eclipses are seen as powerful portals for transformation.
00:26:42
Speaker
During an eclipse, the sun, the moon, and the earth align in a rare way that allows for introspection, release, and new beginnings. And this moment is all about intention setting. It's about letting go of old patterns and making space for what you truly want.
00:26:58
Speaker
Magic during a solar eclipse often focuses on reflection, manifestation, and harnessing elemental forces. Rituals can include things like journaling and meditation to clarify your intentions.
00:27:11
Speaker
Firework as well can be a great addition to your workings during this time to symbolize purification and new beginnings. And crystals like clear quartz, citrine, sunstone, and black tourmaline are commonly used to amplify the intentions set during this time or to offer protection or focus. Eclipse energy can be a very powerful catalyst for change and growth.
00:27:37
