On today's episode, we're going to get into the ah Lorraine winning another game. Uh... Wish it was a bigger win, but I'll still take it. Dub pod is always good.
Speaker: um We'll get into the game against Chicago. Wrap up some results around the league. Bit of rain news, and we'll preview the next match for the rain. But before we get into all that, do you want me to do this since you sound like shit?

Speaker: I have some sort of like head cold. I don't know it's... it's not good it doesn't sound good i had a fever last night it was It was gross, but... um Yeah, we'll try and keep this one tight because we got a two game. episode coming up i think we got a quick turnaround too so we had a game friday night at lumen Heading into it, I felt pretty good playing Chicago. How are you feeling?
Speaker: I was kind of nervous. To be honest. Yeah. It's one of those where like you can. just kind of brush it off especially being the start of like a Big three game. Turnaround week. Mm -hmm.
Speaker: Because we game Friday, game Wednesday, game Saturday. Yeah. So... I didn't know. And then we found out before the game that Meza... got a knock and was gonna be out.
Speaker: for the game so that's concerning um but i think overall i knew the team could win the game just didn't know how the setup was going to look and how seriously they were going to take it I think everyone understands how tight the standings are and that they need to go on a run.
Speaker: This game was nervy though, in terms of. They weren't actually scoring. a lot of chances that they were getting. so that was kind of uh i don't know i think we were kind of due for a game like that though So i like I texted you, and I was just like, at least like we had this kind of game against a team like Chicago, because if this happens against another team... I don't think we're getting the win.
Speaker: so Yeah, and... I was talking to some people during the game For me, I think that this is a fine result against a really bad team because... Again, it is the first game in a three game.
Speaker: quick turnaround. So I don't. Louisville's been kind of on run. Yeah they have been. So we don't want to go blow out. Chicago and then... be overconfident going into the next game. totally So I'm fine with this. I mean, it's three points. It's three points at home.
Speaker: It was an exciting match. Most shots on goal we've had. Peace. as far as I can remember. Yeah, which, like... Chicago's pretty bad so of course that happens but I think to your point about you know We've got a tough game against Louisville coming up. Travel's tricky getting out there. I still stand by like, I don't want. Too much attention on the rain.
Speaker: yeah they've They've got a... big stretch of games and they just need to go out there and do their job. And they did that against Chicago. Yeah. ah You got a notable notable stats? Yeah, with this match, Sofia Huerta tied Alyssa Nair for the fourth most regular season appearances in NWSL history with 218. Holy moly.
Speaker: Which is funny because before the game. Before they were letting people in, I but had i brought my binoculars. They had the the other game that was on. um playing in the stadium okay so some of the some of the players for chicago were out there watching and I like zoomed in and it was in a listener.
Speaker: so it's funny that she did that in a game where she played against a listener's team yeah ah What worked for you? I mean, Sofia Huerta had a much better game. Yeah. talked about how She looked kind of off last match. And. kind of... struggled.
Speaker: Quite a bit. Yeah, quite a bit. Yeah. And so to see that. She was able to put a performance out like this. And notably in the second half. get really into the attack was really cool to see because that's something that we've kind of missed from her. I remember when we were getting her back. From her loan.
Speaker: It was like, oh, we missed those services into the box. We missed those opportunities from set pieces that she can bring. And it looked like she was kind of getting more into that. pattern as the game progressed she was also making some and Really important defensive. efforts that one slide in on the very edge line was so pretty and perfectly timed yeah She was great. think
Speaker: I was kind of thinking during this game that like we've had a few players that we rely quite a bit on and they seem to have. Not everybody, but a lot of them seem to have like these off games. And it doesn't seem to ever become a pattern.
Speaker: So, so that's. Like, if Sophia... Would have had a really good game the last game. Maybe we win that. But... Angel City he was playing pretty well. I feel pretty good about it. And I think it's. It's at least nice that they can rebound from that and learn they're learning quickly how to not. continue those struggles. Yeah, and that showed in this game. I've got it in the what didn't work section, but Swanson.
Speaker: was kind of let loose. in the first half, yeah and that was kind of concerning. But you did see them adjust to that. And those chances from her. We're. Cut off. Before she got taken out at halftime.
Speaker: yeah And nothing really came of it. No. so it's Good to see that in game. Learning happening and those adjustments happening so that. That doesn't. those patterns. don't keep repeating themselves yeah What else worked for you? I wanted to touch on, I think Sally Menti had a good game. I think. A lot of times she tries stuff and it doesn't ever.
Speaker: kind of work super well i think this game i found myself kind of just like in awe at times of the of the things she was trying and she was pulling a lot of it off And I appreciate the audacity for her to try some of this stuff. I think there's still some work to clean up with some of it. but Like there was multiple moments in this game. I was just like, oh my God, like she really tried that. And it was like. Not just once. It was like twice, three times of her just trying. she I mean, her eyes were looking at teammates and then she was trying things.
Speaker: And. There was a cheekiness to it. There was the past that kind of led up to the goal that I really, really enjoyed. And then there was like the little interception while Chicago's trying to get in transition. And she kind of just dinks the ball out of the air. and gets... tries to switch the play backwards. and she like draws the foul to like get possession back for them and i just think i'm not so I'm still not sold on her being our starter at a 10 type of role. But...
Speaker: I think she's... She's learning a lot. And she's trying things and the things that she's trying are really fun to watch. and We haven't had a player that kind of has that creativity.
Speaker: in that position for a long time I feel like I was getting a little bit of Rapinoe from some of the stuff she was just trying. I'm not so sure that she's quite there yet and will ever be there, but...
Speaker: i don't know I had fun watching some of the stuff she was doing. Yeah. I don't think she had a bad game. No. She just is is a liability at times. Yeah, I will say this was against Chicago. Yeah, so against the worst team in the league. Yeah. So I need to see that against a really good team because we all know how bad Chicago is. Right. And those things don't haven't worked against good teams.
Speaker: Yeah. But, hey, if she she realizes... She has that in her, I mean, she has the capability to do it. So if she can figure out how to do it against really good teams, that'll be super dangerous. That requires speed.
Speaker: yeah we i mean we haven't seen that yet but no this game she was fun to watch you're not wrong yeah She had a really good game. But you have to put it in the context. Yeah, but yeah I also have to give her credit, so. For sure. The last thing I had put down that worked is the team was very persistent and I thought they had a lot of grit in this. I don't think they're pulling out this win.
Speaker: Without that grit, I think they lacked that earlier in the season. I could even see this game being a loss, like ah they give up some stupid goal a few months ago. What do you think of the goal?
Speaker: I thought the... ah How many passes it went from? There was like six passes. That led to it. I mean, minus... the ball bouncing around in the box a minute, but leading up to that opportunity, it was just kind of a a full team effort. And you saw that on multiple chances. you know, They weren't all just dinky turnover chances that the rain were able to get to and then shoot.
Speaker: A lot of it was like a build, a buildup to those chances. So I love that. being able to see that connection from Dickey or the defensive line. all the way up to the front. It's something we've kind of missed. especially when we were talking about it a couple weeks ago with that long ball. Over the top. they were hitting those They were hitting those, but they were also moving the ball through the midfield. There's a lot of different points of attack for them. And on the goal, Puerta with that... Big. Overlapping Run
Speaker: That was great. We haven't seen that in a while. And I feel like the communication on that left -hand side with Huerta and Darlene. was much better this game in hopefully it saved maddie some running yeah because we got a long week after this yeah To add on to that, McCammon was on fire. I don't know how she didn't get a goal of this game. She is.
Speaker: quickly becoming like my top three like get my top three favorite players if she's not already She's good. She's really really good. Sometimes the ball comes off of her foot in a way that shouldn't be possible coming off a 19 year old's foot. It doesn't make any sense. Yeah. In... It doesn't make any sense. She's unbelievable.
Speaker: I... 100 % see her having a huge future and like starting for the u .s women's national team if she keeps this up and keeps developing this I mean, even as she as she is right now, it's unbelievable. So the fact that she's only 19 is like, I can't like it's blowing my mind. Yeah. her past Her passing. ability out of the back.
Speaker: to find players is just... It's so pleasing to watch. If she could dial in. Like a... big shot from outside the box and just She's getting close. She's getting close, but I think i want That's what I want to see again. Yeah.
Speaker: Man. Really enjoying them. I've - I've been frustrated because we like we need a new signing, but like... which we did get one technically today. but They're not going to be available for a while, but.
Speaker: Like being able to see players like McCammon. kind of... get this opportunity in Shine is so special. I... Don't know that. this wins championships. Still. At least not this year.
Speaker: Maybe not next year either, but it is very fun to watch these young players. grow into their careers and their capabilities like this. it's It's cool. yeah And it says a lot about the club and the ah culture and the atmosphere to allow these players to do that. Yeah. Did you wanna add anything else to what worked? No. Okay. What didn't work for you?
Speaker: Why are we shooting high balls constantly against a six foot tall goalkeeper? Bring the ball down. Hit the ball down. yeah it's like every shot like we hit the crossbar a couple times yeah Maybe they should work on that because they were shooting them high. I think the... The whole thing was...
Speaker: Just a, okay, we need to work on finishing. Yeah, it was definitely. a reminiscent of the games ah during the streak in which we were not scoring but the etsy which has come through again so thank you i know I don't know how much longer this is going to continue. I feel like we've gotten... you've gotten we've gotten our money's worth so far absolutely but uh yeah this this game was definitely reminiscent of our earlier season problems.
Speaker: But unlike earlier earlier this season, didn't give up a goal. No. and was able to were able to put one in the back of the net. So... I... We talked about last week not playing down to Chicago's.
Speaker: abilities or lack thereof. Right. And i I don't think that they did. I think they had some issues with their finishing. Yeah. Had some quality chances, not able to connect, but you get 24 shots on goal.
Speaker: Compared to... Chicago's Uh, five. 24 total shots. We have six on six on target. right but 24 to 5 total shots i mean that's not playing down to your opponent no So I'm glad that they were able to.
Speaker: Pull through and and... kind of get that figured out. Yeah. I never, I will never forget what happened when we played Lujmila. That was talked about multiple times at the press box. The good news is they don't have Luigi Milla anymore, so...
Speaker: Um, Success. there was yeah There was one other concerning thing in the first half, which talked about a little bit, but Swanson. just having free reign in the box.
Speaker: It was like. They were just backing up, backing up, backing up And nobody was really stepping to. And nobody's really showing her to a certain side. Showing her wide, showing her inside so that that cover per cover defender could be there.
Speaker: It was just... kind of it looked like they were waiting for somebody else to come up and take responsibility. And then nobody did. And so there was a chance. Mm hmm. So. But they kind of figured that out. And then Swansea came off at half, so that was...
Speaker: Problem solved. Problem solved. Yeah. like unfortunately like she wasn't able to play for that long but fortunately we're the team that's on the other side of that so um Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, it's a 1 -0 victory against Chicago. I was hoping for more. Bye. I'll take three points and I'll shut up. Same. We got a lot. coming up in fact when this show will be out there'll be a game So. we We're just going to be moving through. through things. The good news is the rain are now. uh an eighth place so they're in the They're in the playoffs as of... things right now.
Speaker: And we're two games back. um you know like some teams have two games that they've played ah above us so if we Went out some games. will be looking pretty good. Tough. Bit of matches and scheduling coming up, but...
Speaker: The team's been ready for that kind of stuff. before so uh what'd you get out the pressers So we had Mercado and McCammon in the player presser. They talked a lot about the camaraderie and chemistry and how that's been growing like crazy. I think the team's really just vibing.
Speaker: um They were asked about how it felt to be over 500 now. it's a Basically just boosts. the overall confidence and knowing that they can beat. Be a top team. and then Again, more talk about Lou.
Speaker: They really seemed to feel that like that was a very important thing. and has really helped them which Honestly, if you look at the game since Lou has been back involved with the team. There's been a positive impact. Um,
Speaker: Laura's Presser. Actually, pretty long. She enjoyed talking about this game. um She said that they made it harder on themselves than they needed to be. Which, yeah. But... Talked about, yeah, not great on on defense and transition in the first half. Meza's injury. Whatever. That might be a mystery, you know, um happened in training. the day before the match.
Speaker: It's tough luck. so it was Tough getting her ready in 24 hours. It was just unrealistic. She talks more about how the end line for the team is always 42 points. That's how you make the playoffs is 42 points.
Speaker: And there are five games away from that now. So it it is a possibility. And that's their goal is to make the playoffs. She talked about, I asked her about where it does... performance this match, and she said the second half that Huerta played was probably her best half this season.
Speaker: Agree. um And then she talked about something really interesting, which I didn't know was a thing. um They have. Coaches calls with the refs. Quite often. Hmm. So like. The... So they did a ref call with the league this week or last week. um And Laura said, there's a big discrepancy. with goalkeeper fouls and what happens inside and outside the box. when it comes to goalkeeper interference. yeah Which is something we haven't touched on, but there was a... Var. review In the first half.
Speaker: when Matty Mercado gets taken out. Yeah. By Chicago's goalkeeper. That was... something in That annoyed me. Yeah, but Laura said she thought there was no way that that... that penalty would be given with what they talked about in the ref call that week. Interesting.
Speaker: Basically because... I think Mercado took a touch away from goal. My thing is though... Here's my detached view. The goalkeeper's coming out, making a play on the ball.
Speaker: Even if she doesn't get to it. And Mercado takes a touch away. If she hadn't come out and fouled her, would that touch have been away? Yeah, she's adjusting her positioning and the way that she tries to get to the ball because the goalkeeper is coming at her. So the moment the goalkeeper touches her, I feel like it's foul.
Speaker: But apparently not. yeah But if that happens outside the box... It's a vow. It's Fowl's record. Yeah, i yeah i don't I don't agree with the decision on that. um But she said that... They are really informative talks in those meetings and they have them quite often. I'm curious in what the conversation was over the ah the late no -call last game.
Speaker: Yeah, I don't know. We'll never know. ah She also was a bit gobsmacked that Mercado did not make team of the month. Because she's scored in every game but one.
Speaker: know. again we're flying under the radar Fine by me. Yeah, that's good. and that was the That was the presser. Cool. Should we do cool part of the match? Sure. The cool player of the match is brought to you by The Doctor's Office, a great little 12 -seat bar on Capitol Hill. The owner is a big fan of The Reign and is proud to be our first sponsor.
Speaker: Who are we giving it to? So I just thought after... Talking about how poor she was. in the last game and then seeing the Best second half of soccer. that she's played all year, I think it was appropriate to give it to Suvia Huerta. Yeah.
Speaker: Fair enough. do that That goal doesn't happen without her and several other people. I thought it was fair to give her some flowers for this one. Agreed. i'm looking forward to that there was like a there's a few crosses from her that were so close to finding A player on the end, too. I will say my second choice for this was Sally Menti. Oh.
Speaker: Look at you. It was a good game. A good game for a lot of players. Yeah. Just need to see this against a better team. That's the thing. Yeah. Let's connect all these pieces, which Louisville has kind of got that same kind of gritty. We'll talk about it later, but. you know.
Speaker: there'll be plenty of challenges for them to prove justice will be a uh consistent. you know defensive thing but thanks again to our sponsor the doctor's office the doctor's office is the best place to grab a drink before or after a match or really whenever go make an appointment today check out their instagram at tdo seattle or better yet go drink there in person Cheers. cheers There's a bit of rain news. Yeah, they made a signing today.
Speaker: Not a splashy one. You texted me and I was like, based on like the way that you text me, and I was like. This ain't anything huge. I guess we don't quite know. So here's the thing. So the rain sign, Ivorian forward. Amy Diallo. through 2028.
Speaker: That's some time. mm -hmm She's 5 '9", 25 years old. Mm hmm. And they paid an agreed -upon transfer fee, so I don't think this was... Anything huge. Yeah. She doesn't meet the high impact player. Requirements So there's still that. yeah Um,
Speaker: She's been playing in the Ivory Coast. Top League. I didn't know that was a thing. But good for them. um but she had this is a Stole this from the press release, but a standout campaign with ASEC Mimosas. Fantastic team name. Mm -hmm. Definitely.
Speaker: Her standout campaign included a second consecutive Ivorian Division I title. and historic run to the CAF Women's Champions League final. She scored 31 goals last season.
Speaker: which was second most in the league somehow. Hmm. um And they won the championship last year. She's going to arrive in Seattle in the coming weeks, pending receipt of her P1 visa. i feel like my reaction to this is just i just didn't think this was the position we needed to bolster There's that, yeah.
Speaker: What was your reaction? That... As well as who? Yeah. The thing is though... And the shitty thing about... What? with African players is it's so hard to know.
Speaker: What? their level is. Yeah. They don't have any sort of media coverage. If if there is any, it's very little. I texted Grant after this because... My buddy Grant, he... does a YouTube channel where they talk about world. women's football. especially English, but I asked him about this and his YouTube channel is... Into the channel? Into the channel. Yeah. Go look it up on YouTube. Great show where you can learn more about world women's football. He knows a bunch.
Speaker: And said just kind of a bench player for the national team. Not a whole lot of notes on her. um But then WSL has had. Good Success! Pulling in.
Speaker: players from African teams. And. I don't know I've seen some of the goals from the highlights. that have been shared today after the signing was made. Seems promising. Seems like a player that might... being at a good time in her career to... make a move to try and get some international acclaim.
Speaker: So I don't know. Yeah it's a mystery. A bit of a mystery. But how many forwards do we have? I mean, this is what I was like. we didn't I didn't know what we were going to do with all the Fords we had when we had Hydema. And I was like, okay, we're getting to ready to hide. I'm going to clear some some space to make room for some other positions because we're fucking stacked in the forward part department.
Speaker: And now we're back to the same thing that we I was like concerned about at the beginning of the season. so The only thing I can really think of is... If she is fast. Mm -hmm. Putting her at the nine. Yeah, and dropping. Official Into the Ten.
Speaker: Yeah, maybe. it's hard It's hard to know. I mean, we'll we'll see. We're not going to see for a while. yeah this is going to be end of the season kind of but as you said we're going to be losing Some people. yeah at the end of the season we definitely are so this is a which it is a longer contract and maybe this is a longer term kind of picture of things because there are some Players that may be... haven't gotten the amount of goals we hoped they would when we signed them.
Speaker: And so I don't think there'll be some extensions on some players. Or maybe there's something in the works to transfer them. I don't know. I don't know, but I think... This doesn't seem to be a lot of money. no it seems to be if it hits it hits if it doesn't it doesn't yeah There's not a whole lot on the line here.
Speaker: No. that doesn't make me feel much better about it No, I want more. That's where I'm at. It's like, we still need some sort of midfielder. playmaker, instant impact player. We need that still. And I'm not going to be satisfied. I was a rain fan until...
Speaker: I get a text from you saying it finally happened. The rain signed some sort of midfielder. Yeah. um you know you wanted leslie to do something this is something Sure.
Speaker: Right. I don't think that there's any, there's no other rain news at the moment, right? No. Okay. How'd the results go around the league over the weekend? Um, it's alright. I watched a couple highlights, but... I...
Speaker: I barely have a voice to talk about this. ah Gotham beat KC two to one. Sam Kerr won another game winning. Cool. Must be nice. Dream signing for Gotham. San Diego tied Denver 1 -1. Goals for Barsanis and Ryan.
Speaker: Utah against Bay. This game is actually fun to watch. um the for For the first goal. Carly Lima, Manny McGlynn, the ball's coming back to McGlynn. McGlynn takes a touch across her body and Carly Lima just comes in and slides. And as McGlynn... goes to clear the ball, it hits off Lima's slide tackle and goes into the goal. Oh no...
Speaker: um But Tanaka actually won the game on a penalty. which was first saved by Bloomer. But in the replay in the. VAR she was off the line. I feel like bloomers Just...
Speaker: Having all sorts of bad luck this season. Yeah, it's not great. Then Louisville crushed Boston 4 -1. Yikes. Emma Sears finally on the... Getting back on the score sheet every week.
Speaker: We're still still waiting for you. I was like i wasn't preferring when Louisville was losing and there was a chance we would get Sears. but Whatever. Portland. eked one out against Orlando. Winning 2 -1. Kaya Hanks. Last week was taken off season ending injury. and activated and she ended up scoring the winner Late, too. Late winter, 90 plus 6. It's kinda cool.
Speaker: North Carolina lost to Houston 3 -2. Goals from Schlegel. EJ is still scoring. Jeez. Fosse, yeah. And then Angel City tied the spirit one to one. That's that's a surprising result. Yeah, Setnor opened up her goal scoring 85th minute after Robbins scored in the 65th. We're in the heat of it now. We're in the heat of the... playoff race so that's fun uh and some other teams are kind of pulling out some surprising results so Who knows what the fuck's going to happen the rest of the season.
Speaker: Yeah, I haven't looked at the table in a while. Yep, we are finally an eight. Thank God. Yeah. ah Next match that the Reign have, I already mentioned it, but they're playing Racing the Louisville, 3 .30. What day is that? That's tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19th. I was like... I don't need to know the date for that. It's not written on here, but I don't need to know. 3 .30 p .m. our time. That'll be on Fox 13 Plus and NWSL Plus.
Speaker: Um... I kind of mentioned this already, but The rain would be tied on points with San Diego if they win their next two matches kind of catching up. with the extra games played that we haven't had yet. So.
Speaker: That's kind of wild. Mm hmm. San Diego's in fifth in the table right now. I didn't... think that like this run of the reign where i would put them even in contention for that so uh If they do it, that's kind of a huge deal. Yeah, but again...
Speaker: With all the turnover. and how the games are working it's Kind of crazy that... to hope that they're going to win every single one of these matches yeah definitely I hope they do. I will take it if they do. but there's With that little time between games and the travel and everything we know about that in the NWSL, like...
Speaker: It's going to be a crapshoot. luva's on a tear luva's on his hair um We're going to Louisville. The weather is going to be hot and humid. i eat Maybe lightning, who knows? I have... hope with how the team's been performing. But the... X Factor.
Speaker: with all the other things is is what concerns me. Mm hmm. Meza did travel. To Louisville. But she's day to day, so they don't. know if she'll be playing tomorrow. Yeah, I've...
Speaker: When I was thinking of like things I want to see, I don't really know because I don't know what kind of rotation we're going to see. I think if I had to point out one thing, I need Claudia Dickey to show up and not have any kind of silly oopsies. She had a kind of couple close calls in this last game. And the way that Louisville is playing right now, I don't think they care what anyone thinks of them.
Speaker: uh that seems to be part of their mantra yeah their mantra they uh aaron wright did an interview and talked about the team's mantra these days and it has been um Fuck it and fuck you.
Speaker: I... I respect it. I respect that. it's pretty awesome when you're that bad and that's just how you're gonna go out and Kind of. keep keep going keep the team motivated and stuff um but the rain are a better team And they need to show up and they need to not underestimate Louisville right now. And then Emma Sears can just hop on the plane home.
Speaker: you can join the try Maybe that's what they're waiting for. Maybe they're just waiting to make it convenient. Who knows? I don't know. I think it's funny that Louisville's unbeaten in their, or won their last three matches. That's crazy. Now they've done this um when we are unbeaten in our last four matches. So fuck it and fuck you too. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: It's the ultimate. Fuck you, showdown. ah Is there anything specific you want to see in this game? A win? Yeah. That'd be nice. Haven't fallen back into that second half malaise lately. So that's been good. Um,
Speaker: Yeah, just a... well -rounded match, I think. with Different players getting involved, which we saw towards the end of this last game with Coco having a little bit of an opportunity. Holly Ward. You know, if you're going to put somebody in to take some pressure off some people, I think that she really has, if she gets some time. She has an opportunity to... Making. make an impact for herself.
Speaker: Yeah, I think Mercado is going to need a little bit of rest. i don't want to overplay her she's playing so damn well that you need to make sure she doesn't get hurt uh because we've been heavily relying on her which is totally fair yeah it's one thing to make it to playoffs it's another thing to make it to playoffs healthy Yeah. I wouldn't mind seeing Adamas maybe starting this. She's, I think.
Speaker: eager to get some playing time and I think she would take a moment like this to maybe do something fun. So, yeah, I don't know. Fingers crossed that they don't. Sigh. They don't get fucked by Louisville.
Speaker: Yep, hopefully not. We should say that we will do a two game episode. yeah when we drop next week Yeah, because we've got... Wednesday and then I think Saturday is the next game after that right so that's yeah that's kind of just a quick turnaround this was already we probably should record it over the weekend but we Don't think ahead of time. so um So yeah, the next episode will be a little bit delayed, but we'll talk about both the games in the next one. So fingers crossed. It's a double dub pod.
