What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here, and on this episode of Shaping Your Pottery, I'm going to be talking about why you should be buying other potters' work and why it's important to help you find your own unique voice.

You see, I had a really great interview with Beth Hardin. And one of the things that Beth likes to do, and I know a lot of other potters like to do the same thing as well, is that she likes to buy other people's work and she likes to study them pretty much. She likes to use them. She likes to see how she can take what they're making and she can apply it to their own potters.

And she gave a really good example. She was like, when I started buying other people's work, I noticed that my own handles for my mugs weren't that good. And so she said that once she started buying other people's work, that her handles improved because she was able to feel other people's

handles. And I think this is really important to help you discover your own unique voice with your project, whether you're making handles better or whether you're just making a different style better.

And when you buy other people's work, two things happen. Number one is that you are supporting other potters, which is really, really great. When you're able to support other potters, things start to happen a lot more. Maybe friendships start to develop a little bit more. The second thing that happens is that you can study what they are doing with their potter. You can get up close and personal with what they are doing with their pottery so that you can try to implement into your own style.

You know, whether you are trying to improve your own handles or maybe you're trying to improve the rim or maybe you're trying to improve the style. That's why it's important to buy other people's work. So you can use it as references for your own work. I'm not saying to go out and straight up copy them. I'm saying to take the things that you like from them and try to improve it and try to make it into your own work. That's the point of modeling and just a point of buying other people's pottery.
Supporting Pottery Businesses and Personal Growth

This will help both people out. It'll help them with their small business. It'll help you with trying to find your own voice because you are taking the time to study other people and you're taking the time to try to implement it into your own work. And again, I ask you, how can you use other people's pottery and apply it into your own work, right? Buy other people's work so that you can study them, not to copy them, but to study them.
