We've been sold a false choice: work smarter, not harder.

But real achievement doesn't work that way.  There are things in life you simply cannot hack. Building a strong body. Learning a language. Becoming exceptional at your craft. Building a company. Becoming the person you want to be. Eventually, you have to put in the reps.  But hard work alone isn't enough either.

In this episode of the Voice of Growth, I break down the forces I believe create meaningful achievement: hard work, smart work, desire and identity—plus why sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop swinging long enough to sharpen your saw.  I also share five questions I use to examine whether I'm working on the right things, with the right tools, for the right reasons.  Because the objective isn't simply to work harder.

It's to figure out what matters, find the smartest way to pursue it—and then be willing to do the work.  The Voice of Growth — Mastering the Mind and Market.

Work Smart. Then work like hell!

What separates leaders who continue growing from those who become trapped by their own success?  Michael Guymon joins the Voice of Growth for a wide-ranging conversation about leadership, ego, complacency, economic development, and the future of Tucson.

Michael shares lessons from his career in politics, business, and civic leadership—including why trust and ego can make or break major organizations, what he learned from becoming complacent, and why great leaders never stop asking, “What’s next?”  We also explore Stoicism, failure, legacy, Tucson's untapped potential, and why meaningful economic growth requires leaders willing to move beyond the past and build the next chapter.  Voice of Growth — Mastering the Mind and Market.

The Leadership Trap Nobody Talks About: Ego, Complacency & What Comes Next

War. Politics. Crime. Social media. AI. Economic uncertainty. Human suffering.

How do you remain ambitious, compassionate and optimistic without allowing everything happening around you to consume you?

In this episode of the Voice of Growth, I explain why the chaos of the modern world is exactly why I practice Stoicism. We explore the difference between reacting and responding, the power of identity and intent, how algorithms amplify our biases, and why accepting what we cannot control doesn't make us passive—it gives us more energy to act on what we can control.

For entrepreneurs especially, Stoicism can become a kind of mental armor: stay true to your identity, control your response, and keep moving forward.

Why Stoicism? — Staying Strong in a World That Wants You to React

What does it take to build a business that survives 34 years of technological disruption—and keeps growing?

In this episode of Voice of Growth, I sit down with Greg Durnan of AcaciaIT to discuss entrepreneurship, reinvention, failure, cybersecurity, AI, and leadership. Greg shares how the 2008 financial crisis forced him to rethink his company—and ultimately build a stronger, more scalable business.

We also explore why AI won't necessarily replace you—but someone who knows how to use it might, why human relationships still matter in an increasingly automated world, and why successful leaders must continually adapt.

Ultimately, this isn't an episode about IT. It's about building a business capable of surviving whatever comes next.

Adapt or Die: 34 Years of Reinventing a Business

100 episodes.

And this time, the interviewer became the interviewed.

For the 100th episode of the Voice of Growth Podcast—and, coincidentally, my birthday—Executive Producer Reganne Fornstrom turned the microphone around and asked me about the ideas, failures, experiences and philosophies behind Voice of Growth.

We talk about the entrepreneurial ventures that worked, the ones that didn't, writing personal checks to make payroll, discovering Stoicism during one of the most difficult chapters of my career, innovation, curiosity, mentorship, flow state, the future of VOG—and why I believe the hard path is often exactly the path we're supposed to take.  B

ut if there's one message underneath the entire conversation, it's this:  Get out there and do it.  Life is short. Business is difficult. Failure is inevitable. In 100 or 200 years, virtually none of us will be remembered.  That isn't depressing.  It's liberating.  Memento mori isn't about death. It's a reminder that we're alive right now.

Take the risk.

Make the call.

Build the company.

Have the conversation.

Try the thing.

Life is a full-contact sport.

100 Episodes: We're Just Getting Started

What if the biggest threat to your dream isn't failure?

What if it's allowing other people's fear to become your own?

Charlie Gilder is a young musician building his career in one of the most disrupted industries on earth.

Music is being reshaped by Spotify, social media, algorithms, AI-generated songs and an endless competition for attention.

And yet Charlie believes something fundamentally human will survive all of it.  Connection.  In this episode of Voice of Growth, Charlie and Manny Teran explore creativity, flow state, criticism, courage, Stoicism, artificial intelligence, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Prince, luck, discipline and what it means to create something that actually comes from a real place.

Charlie argues that AI may eventually reproduce extraordinary music—but it cannot reproduce the chemistry between musicians, the energy of a live performance or the human connection audiences ultimately crave.  But perhaps the most important part of the conversation comes at the end.

Charlie asks anyone sitting on an idea to stop listening to the people telling them to play it safe—and instead listen to the 80-year-old version of themselves who never tried.  This one's about music.  But it's really about having the courage to create.

Don't Let Them Kill Your Dream

What happens when a country decides that its greatest achievement will no longer define its future?

For more than a century, Panama has been synonymous with one of the most consequential pieces of infrastructure ever built: the Panama Canal. But on a recent trip to Panama, I witnessed something much more interesting—a country deliberately asking what comes next.

Panama has launched a $105 million National Agenda for Advanced Technologies focused on artificial intelligence and semiconductors. The strategy isn't to become another Taiwan or compete directly with TSMC, Intel or Samsung. Instead, Panama is looking toward semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging, AI infrastructure and governance, and its existing position as a logistics and financial hub connecting continents, oceans and markets.

But this episode isn't really about semiconductors.

It's about reinvention.

It's about what happens when vision, resources, culture, partnerships and hunger become aligned around a future that doesn't exist yet.  And it raises a question every entrepreneur and leader eventually has to confront:  Is what made you successful yesterday positioning you for tomorrow—or preventing you from changing?

Panama 2.0: Rising Tech Hub

What happens when the thing that made you exceptional is no longer who you are?

Tanya Hughes knows something about performance. She was a 20-year-old Olympic high jumper who wasn't expected to make the U.S. team—then won the Olympic Trials and became a finalist at the 1992 Barcelona Games. But this conversation goes far beyond athletics.

Tanya talks about identity, leadership, burnout, purpose, NIL, parenting, money and the dangerous consequences of allowing achievement to determine self-worth.  Today, young athletes aren't simply student-athletes. NIL has effectively turned many of them into entrepreneurs—sometimes before they're old enough to understand taxes, contracts, branding or the long-term consequences of their decisions. Tanya calls them "student athlete and CEO" and believes NIL should be treated as seed capital for a larger life, not simply money to spend today.

But perhaps Tanya's most important lesson applies to all of us: eventually the applause stops. Titles change. Careers end. Businesses get sold. Children grow up. Bodies change. If your identity is built entirely around performance, what remains?  This is a conversation about learning to be rather than constantly perform.

Who Are You When No One Is Cheering?

And every week...  they blame AI.

But is AI really replacing people—or is it exposing something much deeper?

In this episode of the Voice of Growth Podcast, Manny Teran argues that artificial intelligence isn't the root cause of many corporate layoffs. Instead, it's exposing weak leadership, poor strategy, outdated business models, overstaffing, and organizations that failed to adapt before AI ever arrived.

Drawing from Stoicism, business history, trend analysis, and decades of leadership experience, Manny explains why every major technological revolution initially created fear, how today's AI wave differs because it augments intelligence itself, and why the companies that thrive won't simply have better AI—they'll have better leaders.

He also shares five practical leadership actions every organization should take to build resilience, protect institutional knowledge, empower employees, and compete in an AI-native world.

The Great AI Lie

Most entrepreneurs don't fail because they lack opportunity.

They fail because they surrender their agency.  In this episode of the Voice of Growth Podcast, Manny Teran sits down with Leah Mandal, founder of Gem Stays, to discuss entrepreneurship, leadership, ethics, creativity, manifestation, survival, and why choosing responsibility over victimhood can completely transform your life.

Leah shares how she went from property management to building a premium vacation rental company, why burning the boats forced her to succeed, how personal development unlocked her creativity, and why ethical leadership—not shortcuts—is the ultimate competitive advantage. It's a conversation about far more than business; it's about becoming the kind of person capable of building something extraordinary.
