Introduction and Background

00:01:28
Speaker
Welcome everybody to another edition of Speedway Stories this Thursday night. I hope everybody's been having a good week and everything else. Tonight I got a special guest, Mr. Josh Phillips. Let me bring him up here.
00:01:40
Speaker
going on are you doing tonight, sir? Pretty How about Just another Thursday night, man. yeah, definitely. I appreciate you coming up on the show and everything else.
00:01:52
Speaker
If you give the fans and everything else, and introduce yourself and let us know what got you into the motorsports and the tough truck side of that you do and everything else. So the floor is yours. Yeah.
00:02:06
Speaker
ah my name is Joshua Phillips. um I'm from Elizabeth city, North Carolina. I'm, Pretty much how I got my start in tough truck racing was pretty much watching everybody else racing um from Phil Hall Sr. to Tony Bond to Robbie Williams to ah many of other people that I've seen race. And pretty much I thought, hey, I can do that too.
00:02:41
Speaker
So if it honestly, if it wasn't for Brad Kovacs, cause I traded a toolbox for a Jeep grand Cherokee from him, like several years ago, that's how I got my start.
00:02:57
Speaker
It seems like he's ah got everybody addicted down in that area to doing this stuff, man. I've talked to him a few times through messenger. I can't wait to, Honestly have him on the show when he gets back home and everything from over in Japan Sounds like it's gonna be some interesting stories. He's gonna share with his adventures to Japan plus doing his racing and everything else so oh Yeah, definitely yeah wasn' it like
00:03:26
Speaker
Go ahead go ahead So what was it like?

Racing Highlights and Challenges

00:03:31
Speaker
um Racing at Dennis Anderson's Spring Fling, man. I mean, I see the videos all over YouTube you guys in the tough truck racing and stuff and the mega trucks that people post.
00:03:42
Speaker
But you personally, um what's it like racecing racing in a legend's backyard and everything? I mean, it's pretty fun and it's pretty awesome at the same time. Like,
00:03:56
Speaker
I mean, I grew up watching Dennis um with Grave Digger because I was really big into monster trucks when I was a kid. I never realized how close he lived or how close he actually was until I got into my life. Until I became, i think I was like eight or nine. And then we went to the Outer Banks. And I was living in Virginia Beach at the time with my parents.
00:04:22
Speaker
And I'm like, wait a minute. He's here. Cause he passed by his plates. And i always thought that was cool. And i mean, racing out there at spring slaying, I mean, it's, it's definitely, do I put it into words?
00:04:41
Speaker
It's pretty, it's pretty awesome. That's all going say, like getting to hang, getting to be out there with all the other people that race that I race against and watching all everybody else race and doing tough trucks, mega trucks, the whole nine yards. It's fricking awesome out there. He definitely, but he definitely puts on a good show.
00:05:03
Speaker
Yeah, I definitely see that from the videos and stuff. That's a bucket list, even if not to race, but to go watch sometime, uh, take the family. You can go watch that race in person. um I've actually got to see the debut of Kingsling when he actually debuted. It came up here to Ohio and had it at one of the mud bogs that was like 30 minutes away from where I live that they don't do no more, unfortunately.
00:05:28
Speaker
certainly And man, he put on a show for everybody with that truck. it was It was neat. But it was like a two and a half, almost three hour wait at the end of the night and everything just to get the autographs and stuff. I'm like, yeah, I'm tired. I've been here since seven this morning watching and hanging out with my friends. I'm like, I'll catch you next time. mean he's He's a common sight for me because I'm a truck driver per Pepsi and I drive past i drive past his ah i drive past his pretty his shop and his everything like almost every single day.
00:06:05
Speaker
So, see it's being Grave Digger is kind of on the norm, just pretty much going to and from work um depending on where I'm doing my deliveries at. So, I mean, he's...
00:06:17
Speaker
I mean, he's got a good foothold over there. That's all I'm going to say. Oh, yeah. Well, and I mean, how on just the Monster Jam circuit, I think throughout the whole country, I think he's got like 16 different grave diggers that are racing out on the circuit besides his daughter and Ryan racing for him and everything else. But, I mean, he's got a bunch of different drivers that That is an amazing opportunity to be that drive that famous body and everything else for him and stuff to carry on that tradition. I mean that'd be cool as hell.
00:06:52
Speaker
Definitely. So what's your what's one of your most wildest moments racing Tough Truck that you have experienced in your racing career?
00:07:07
Speaker
Wildest. um I think ah this one actually happened last year and then ironically it was with Brad Kovacs. um We were up in Delmar, Delaware doing I forgot the name of the race but um we were doing tough truck racing. I was racing Kaiser which was my green Jeep that just recently retired. Okay.
00:07:34
Speaker
okay And he was racing, um, Twister. um I forgot the name of the guy who built it, but, um, it was, it was a pretty quick, it was a pretty quick custom build, uh, custom built.
00:07:50
Speaker
ge Um, we did our little circuits and me and him got to the finals. Um, and. we went balls to the wall. Like I didn't let off the throttle. And, uh, I turned a little too sharp trying, cause we had to go down a track and then do a UE come back and do another UE and hit a tabletop. well, we had,
00:08:17
Speaker
ah on that first turn, like we were neck and neck. Like, I think I might've been slightly ahead. He was just like, I looked over, he was right to my side.
00:08:28
Speaker
Um, and we would did that turn and i and there's a video, there's a, there's a video of it, of me hitting that turn and almost rolling the Jeep. Like I went up on two wheels and I i luckily corrected it. So I wouldn't roll. And because of that, he won the race.
00:08:46
Speaker
And then, um, After me and him went across the finish line, he rolled Twister like one or two times. And I had to, as soon as I saw that happen, I went over there to see if he was okay.
00:09:03
Speaker
Like I drove my Jeep straight over there. Like, you okay? You all right? i was like, don't move. And that thing was a twisted mess. So all in all, that was probably one of the craziest moments.
00:09:18
Speaker
he said what ah He said what's up in the chat. He's in there on the chat and everything else. Bye, Brad. i brad op in but Hey, what's up, Pat? Thanks for tuning in, man.
00:09:31
Speaker
um Okay, question I seen on one of the comments on the post. So what's this about losing your steering wheel? I said I was going to ask them about that. This happened a number of years ago um on a tough truck. that It was a tough truck that I had bought off of somebody. Yeah.
00:09:51
Speaker
I, it was like a two, it was a two door XJ. I chopped the, i I chopped it to make it look like a truck. I had the roll cage and everything. The guy i yeah I'm horrible. Cause I'm horrible with names. The guy bought it from put this like aftermarket stupid steering wheel on the thing.
00:10:09
Speaker
and And ah I didn't like it, but I just kind of dealt with it. And then I went and raced at ah Morgan's Corner ah Proving Grounds. And I hit a jump. And when I landed, the steering wheel broke. Oh, shit.
00:10:28
Speaker
And I was like, as soon as I landed and realized the steering wheel is broke, I'm literally holding in my hand, like both hands. And it's not connected to the... it's not connected to steering whatsoever. i immediately hit the brakes and I was sitting there like, really?
00:10:47
Speaker
but Of all, of all times too to be in the middle of competition when something like that happens, man, that sucks. Yeah. That like um um that was that rig. called it blue trash. I was kind of like a nitpick at, um, um,
00:11:04
Speaker
um Crap, I don't forgot what it was called. Blue Crush from... I forgot who used to race that truck, but um it was just a knack on the guy on the truck name called it instead of Blue... No, not Blue Crap. Blue Trash. I'm sorry. Blue Trash.
00:11:22
Speaker
Sorry, Blue Trash. It was just a knock on ah on a Mega Truck that um I used to joke the name of because they kind of spelled it weird. And I was just like, yeah, I'll just call this thing Blue Trash.
00:11:35
Speaker
nice But that's the rig it happened on. um
00:11:41
Speaker
I was smart and I just put the stock steering wheel back on and I never had a problem since. Well, that's a good thing. Yeah, when I checked my Facebook and I seen he commented that and i'm like, yeah, I definitely got to ask this live on the show what actually what happened to cause this steering wheel to come off. think that was 20. I think that happened in 2019.
00:12:04
Speaker
i think that happened in twenty nineteen Yeah, because I took 2019, I raced most of that year, and then I decided to step away from Tough Trucks for a little while.
00:12:16
Speaker
And i believe that was the last i believe that was the last race I did. And then I stepped away for about a year and a half, two years, and then I came back. So, yeah, it's kind of funny that he remembered that.
00:12:31
Speaker
Well, you took a shorter break than I did. i been Last year was my first time back since 2009, and I'm right now, me and my son and stuff, and we're building an XJ Cherokee for here at the house and everything for here in Ohio to race and stuff. so But, yeah, I got the opportunity last year. guy needed a driver, and I was first one he asked, and I forgot how much fun it actually was. Yeah. So now I got my own. Now I got my own that I i can split seat time with my son and everything else. And I'm hoping my second oldest, she decides she wants to race a couple times too. So I'm going to try to pass the torch down to them if they want to stay with it and everything else ah after this year. but hey yeah
00:13:17
Speaker
so So do you plan on racing a whole bunch this this summer or do you just got a select few that you're going to do this year?

Community and Inspiration

00:13:27
Speaker
Well, as of right now, I am built, I'm currently building a new tough truck. Um, I am hopeful to have it done by, ah I'm hopeful to have it done and ready and ready to race by at least North versus South.
00:13:45
Speaker
Um, we don't do a lot of summer races, uh, out here. Um, mainly cause when it gets hot, people don't want to come out. So, um, right exactly there's a few, there's a few events that are coming up that I've, um, that I've seen, but I know I'm, I'm, I'm probably just going end up being a spectator for until I get my new tough truck built.
00:14:09
Speaker
Heck yeah, man. That's awesome. But yeah, I mean, that I've noticed now between you and, uh, yeah, I can't even remember his name though. I had him on last week. Jesus.
00:14:20
Speaker
Oh, for a minute. Phil. Yeah. Between you guys and the history and let alone just the history with ah Brad too. I mean, the guys, the camaraderie that you all have together now, it's fricking awesome the to see that.
00:14:39
Speaker
Yeah, i mean I mean, what's crazy is like when I first started racing, I watched, like I said, I watched ah phil Phil Hall Jr.'s dad, Phil Hall Sr. I was watching race.
00:14:53
Speaker
i was watching him race And he was racing a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a frickin roll cage. And that thing was bad ass. Like I thought that thing school was hell.
00:15:09
Speaker
And I started seeing Robbie Williams and some other people, Tony Bond, um, Sean DeVinney and the samurai. Like that's who I watched before I decided I want to do this shit too.
00:15:25
Speaker
Nice. nice
00:15:29
Speaker
I mean, those guys pretty much paved the way um pretty much for me because of seeing them do that. I was just like, man, I got that looks like ah an adrenaline rush. I got to do that, too. I got to build me one.
00:15:43
Speaker
And I'll admit when I when I first when I got that Jeep from ah Brad, I had no idea what the hell I was doing. Like, I'll tell you a story, and Brad can confirm this, too. And I know he's watching. He's going to be like, yo. Oh, yeah.
00:16:01
Speaker
he is. The first time I brought out um the white Jeep Grand Cherokee, which, ironically, I named White Trash. Nice.
00:16:13
Speaker
um Yeah. I brought it out and I didn't have a roll cage because I didn't at that time, at that point in time, i this was 2017. seventeen This is when I first started racing, like my first race and took my Jeep out there and they're like, oh, you gotta have a, Phil, Phil Hall seniors. Like you gotta have a cage. You gotta have a cage. You gotta have a cage.
00:16:35
Speaker
And i they're like, they're probably not going to let you race. I'm young. I got was 27 and I was, I was freaking out. I was like, dude, what am I going to do? if Like, I got to get this thing ready.
00:16:48
Speaker
Like, I don't have a cage. I got to get a cage. And then i thought about it i'm like, wait a minute. I have a, a four point roll cage that Brad made me for another Jeep that I used to own, um, at the house.
00:17:03
Speaker
Now, mind you, I'm only like 25 minutes. At that time, I was living in Camden. I was 25 minutes away from my house, from Dennis's. I literally got in my truck, high-tailed it home.
00:17:14
Speaker
That morning of the event, went and grabbed that roll cage and brought it back. And I and i shit you not. Me, him, and some other people got that into the grand Jeep Grand Cherokee in white trash the day of the event, literally mere hours before we were about to race. And we we drilled holes. We bolted it to the floor. I had to cut a section. like i had to cut the ah the cage in half to get it to get inside.
00:17:48
Speaker
So we literally had him and... um I think his name was Ethan. It might be Ethan Underwood. Brad, quote me if I'm wrong. um He came over and welded it back into place so I could go out there and race it the same day.
00:18:07
Speaker
That right there is something else. I mean, to be able to do that, that is that's fucking amazing to be able to actually get your first race in. Actually finished building it technically with the cage at the track. I mean, that's that speaks volumes there. so Yeah, it was that was probably one of the craziest, most stressful probably a couple hours of my life because I'm sitting there like, this is my first race. i If they tell me I can't race, i I'm going to lose it. and You get there. Yeah, Brad said, yeah, he remembered that. He's laughing at it.
00:18:45
Speaker
Send a laugh in the comments section about it. Yeah. He remembers it. And um if it wasn't for him and Ethan, like i said, quote me if I'm wrong, Brad, it was if I got the name wrong, quote me. um It was that was probably it was stressful, but i I was able to go out there and race for the first

Building on a Budget

00:19:08
Speaker
time. And like I said, I was young and dumb. I didn't know what the hell I was doing.
00:19:12
Speaker
That was my first time. Brad says it's best, and especially in any motorsports, especially like rough trucks, demolition derby. We definitely are dedicated in stupidity. you It's just one of those deals.
00:19:27
Speaker
They say you learn by experience. That's the best way to learn by experience, just testing things out. Yeah, I mean. Especially on the show. and do Like, um mine didn' I didn't know. Like I said, i at that time, I didn't have a lot of money. i was practically broke. um Not compared to now, but I didn't have a lot of money.
00:19:52
Speaker
i was bought i would I built that thing on a like legit budget. Like I probably had, ah i like I said, I traded him a toolbox.
00:20:03
Speaker
I bought some tires for it. Um, a lift kit, like a, like a used lift kit from somebody off of fricking, uh, whatever the heck I was using to buy off the town, a marketplace or something. I don't know.
00:20:20
Speaker
And, uh, I, I didn't, I had a sponsor, but they didn't really want to help with anything. They just helped me get tires. Um,
00:20:31
Speaker
But I went out there and raced and had a blast and I was surprised I didn't break anything the first race. And i
00:20:40
Speaker
slowly after like a couple of races, I'm sitting there like, why is the front of my Jeep got so much camber right now? but My axle was smiling like hard. Like I had more camera than a Honda, one of them Honda civic people that like, yeah yeah, that's stupid shit. Yeah, I know. But that was, an race that was before I knew, Hey, you gotta, if you want to race tough truck and you want axles to last, you got to t trust them.
00:21:12
Speaker
You got to do all this extra stuff. And, yeah it was pretty much learn as you go at that point in time. I didn't know anything. And then eventually, um,
00:21:29
Speaker
I was like, okay, this axle is not, I'm surprised this axle has a snap, but I would definitely need to replace it. That, um, pretty much Robbie Williams. He's like, Hey, um,
00:21:40
Speaker
he had me haul his, uh, tough truck, um, to my, he's like, Hey, can you take my tough truck to your house and just keep it there for a little bit till I'm able to come get it? So I think he had some issue with his trucker or the car he was driving and I stored it there and I started sending him pictures. I'm like, yo, this thing is like effed, like bad, like your tough trucks, whole body's completely twisted.
00:22:04
Speaker
And, um, there was so many other issues and I searched him pictures and then he's just like, man, that things that thing's too far gone. I'm going to have to let that thing go.
00:22:17
Speaker
He's like, do you want it? And I was just like, yeah ah what? He's like, do you want it? And I'm like, well, he had a trust front axle in it that he trusts himself.
00:22:31
Speaker
So I'm like, okay.
00:22:34
Speaker
hard I'll take it. I'll take i I shit you not. I robbed probably... i ro I pulled the engine transmission transfer case out of it, ah left it to the side because it Robbie said he wanted that. And I said, that's fine. I'll pull for you. I pulled it. I pulled the axles out, um the lift kit, everything else. And and he let me keep the axle and I believe the lift kit, if I'm not mistaken.
00:23:03
Speaker
And he's like he's like, hey, you can scrap the Jeep. And at that point, I didn't really have a car trailer. nice. Yeah. so I'm sitting there like, I got to take this thing the scrapyard, but I have no way of getting this thing on to anything.
00:23:18
Speaker
So I literally, with the saws, I'll cut this Jeep into four pieces. Holy sh shit. I've been there, done that. I've done the saws all side, I've done the torches side to cut cars in half or whatever. and I literally cut this Jeep straight down the middle.
00:23:35
Speaker
And then cut it sideways. And I ended up taking it to the scrapyard with like a pick, like literally in the back of a pickup truck. Oh, damn.
00:23:47
Speaker
And the yeah, that was the, I think that was Jeepers Creepers one. I don't know. I forgot what he named that one. Nice. what yeah Yeah. I've learned.
00:23:57
Speaker
I've learned what the Jeeps, but like you just described, the definitely got to trust that front axle. And I've noticed a couple of my buddies that have them, when they do their cage and stuff, they tie into the unibody and everything. If it's going to tear the unibody, it's going to tear the cage and the plates and everything on it. So that's what we're doing with mine is going to plate it and everything else. And,
00:24:20
Speaker
I had a buddy give me an axle that's bent, but the trusses isn't bent on it. So I'm going go get it and cut the truss off and trust my front axle on there that way. So I don't have to hopefully worry about having a smiley face when we're done. we Yeah, definitely. Cause, uh, I'm surprised my, the axle I raced on never snapped it, but it just kept smiling more and more. And I'm like, how are you even?
00:24:47
Speaker
Well, and especially where you, Some of the courses you guys, where you guys race at, you're really putting those front axles to

Track Difficulties and Dangers

00:24:55
Speaker
the test. I'm surprised that you didn't snap it, especially like racing at Dennis Anderson's track and stuff. I mean, denniisons are I'll be honest with you. Dennis's track is not, I mean, it's not like super terrible.
00:25:10
Speaker
um Morgan's Corner Proving Grounds is probably the most brutal track that I've raced at. like That place is very unforgiving. like ah I can name this and if any of the guys are watching, they can confirm.
00:25:26
Speaker
Morgan's Corner Proving Grounds, that track is no joke. That track hits hard and it breaks tough trucks like that. That sounds like my local fairs.
00:25:39
Speaker
The way they build the track, everything breaks. Even our our ah modified rough trucks, the pro trucks, they're so even rough on those. Yeah, I remember we we had an event at Morgan's Corner Proving Grounds. It was a couple years ago. Shoot.
00:26:01
Speaker
to All I know is we had, if I remember correctly, the number, we had 18 tough trucks show up. And everybody but me, but my tough truck and... um and two other guys got away from that track with like nothing breaking. Everybody else broke their stuff on the track.
00:26:27
Speaker
And it was just, it, that, like i said, that track is, it's rough. If you're not, if you don't know what you're doing, you'll break your stuff. I mean, uh, shout out to Adriana dirt to the moon.
00:26:45
Speaker
She's right there. And she shot Clifford. And and I swore up. it And here's the craziest part. Okay. I know she ended up in the hospital after this. um She hit. ah She was.
00:27:00
Speaker
We were all lined up to do our pass. To see who had the fastest pass or whatever. I was behind Adriana. And she was flying. And she came back and hit that table top and she hit it way too fast. And she over jumped that table top. Oh, shit. Super high and landed flat.
00:27:28
Speaker
Oh. And I'm sitting there like and I'm next. And I'm sitting there like, oh. what Oh. Holy crap, there's an ambulance going over there. Uh-oh.
00:27:40
Speaker
Oh, no. Oh, shit. Damn, man. I was sitting there like... i was like, man, and I got to go next. That really got my nerves in a bunch. I was like, oh, my God, I got to make sure I don't overshoot this jump because it's going to be bad.
00:27:57
Speaker
yeah um i like and i like some of the tracks up here. i don't Most of the tracks that we have... Don't really have the tabletops unless you do like a monster truck show at the that they put on and stuff.
00:28:11
Speaker
and Some of these fairs, it's like you're on a damn motocross track. I mean, yeah they're like skyrocket. point Let's point them and we're going to if you don't crawl over them, I mean you're going straight up and you're coming straight down.
00:28:27
Speaker
um But, yeah, those tabletops, I watched at one of the shows that I helped with last year for a monster truck show. The mod guys that were there for the invitation, they were scaring me of the way they were clearing it. It's like, dude, if it wasn't as long as it was, some of them would have bottomed down hard. I mean, it was they were lucky the guy built it built a tabletop where they still they could hit it hard, and it was long enough that they'd still catch it.
00:28:54
Speaker
But I've seen one of my good buddies actually broke his back at his hometown fair off of a small tabletop. and he flattened out in his mod and it broke his part of his lower back and shit. He hasn't been able to race since. Yeah.
00:29:09
Speaker
Yeah. You're killing killing me with that one. Jesus. Yeah. i won't Yeah. It legit sounds like me when I was, uh, right when I was, um, freestyling at Dennis's, at spring sling, I, I pretty much that Jeep that I raced. It's I call it Kaiser.
00:29:25
Speaker
yeah Cause it's pretty much cause that the old Kaiser Jeeps, I was like, I gotta to use that name. yeah oh yeah i called I started calling it Kaiser and um I've been racing it. This would have been the if I were to race it all season, this would have been the fourth season that I've raced it or the fourth year.
00:29:44
Speaker
um The thing was starting to show its age. um The whole front end was starting to cave. um well The ah full spring brackets. ah and support so Was there anything left of him? I mean, there's still a little bit left of it, but I mean, I i was just like, yeah, I think this is going to be, Spring Sling is going to be its last race um because it's, it it it it wasn't even going in a straight line anymore. It it sounds like you got his worth on him.
00:30:21
Speaker
He did. You go over his Facebook page now, it looks like a rock crawler he's building it into. oh yeah um i took it out to spring sling and i already knew wasn't going to do well because it's it yes I'll just say this now I had the motor held up with ratchet straps oh yeah oh nice ah so yeah I had taken it to an event ah for my buddy Briley Taylor. um He has his own YouTube channel.
00:30:54
Speaker
um Six Feet Under Fab. um He was like, hey, I'm having this ah Jeep and Overlanding event down at Kinston, North Carolina.
00:31:05
Speaker
And he invited he invited me like a year or so ago because he came by and bought a Ford 8-8 from me that I was selling. um And he's like, hey, we have this Jeep overlanding event that we do it every year. And he's like, when you want to come? And I said, i I could try, but I can't guarantee. So last year, I wasn't really able to make it. But this year, I was like, you know what? I'll come out. I'll see what it's all about.
00:31:31
Speaker
And he's just like, well, you want to be you want to be a part of the show? And I was like, sure. He's like, I want you to come out. do you do you Would you mind bringing the Jeep out? Maybe we'll make a jump for you.
00:31:44
Speaker
And you could jump it as many times as you want. I'm like, no, yeah, thanks. never I'm like well, I was like, you know what?
00:31:57
Speaker
Uh, I was sitting there like, you know what? I'll come on out just ah put on a show for people. And I went out there and had he had this like whole big, huge, like Jeep crawling obstacle course and stuff. Um,
00:32:12
Speaker
And I was sitting there like, um i was like, well, I've taken this tough truck out to you, Worry, a few times. And it does surprisingly well because I have to rear weld it up and the front has a locker. And I'm like, um okay. So I went out there and I did like every obstacle that I could.
00:32:30
Speaker
And i got over it. I got through all the obstacles except for one. ah Because I'm on thirty ones cost it's not like I'm going to be able to do a crap ton. So I'm like, all right. And then we went out to do the show and he's just like, Hey, they're going to, we're going to do a tug of war real quick. And then do you want to go next? Uh, you could just jump your Jeep and for the, for the, for the, uh, bands and stuff like that. im like, sure, whatever. he's like, Hey, you're up. And I'm like, all So
00:33:02
Speaker
ah kind of, yeah I did jump on him for this because he did make a jump. But immediately after the jump, I was landing in a practically a mud pit. Oh, shit. Full of water. And I'm like, oh, I know. that was Nothing. No windows. Nothing in the Jeep either. not I was like, oh, well, oh, well.
00:33:27
Speaker
And I was kind of an idiot. And I did not. i totally forgot to bring my helmet with me. And I was just like, well, if I die, I die. ah I'm just standing at the fire. It's like, fuck it. We're going. so I literally, went out there I didn't have a really a crap ton of space to do like a big jump. Like I wanted to, but I got, I was able to get up enough speed to where I was. I probably got about 10, 15 feet in the air and it landed. And of course I landed right in the mud and water. And I just got sprayed like right in the face.
00:34:02
Speaker
And I'm just sitting there like, oh, this sucks. I can't see anything. ah And I'm like, finally, freaking got my eyes open. And I was like, you know what? I'm gonna go do it
00:34:16
Speaker
I turned back around and went over there. And I did it probably about three or four times. actually Yeah, three or four times. And i would at that point, I was soaked like in muddy water. And I was like, all right, that's all i'm gonna do for now. ah If you want me to come back later, can just get a...
00:34:33
Speaker
make sure everything's working and whatnot. So went back out there about two hours later and they're like, Hey, can you do it? You want to do it one more time? I said, dude, let me send this Jeep just like two more times.
00:34:49
Speaker
and And ended up being like three more times. so And, uh, when I landed the third time, I knew something was wrong. but As soon as I landed, I'm like, what is that noise?
00:35:07
Speaker
And it was my, uh, and I noticed I had, i had an exhaust stack, like a small exhaust tip for an intake that came out of my hood. And I noticed it wasn't sitting straight up. It was sitting cockeyed. And I'm like, Oh, I was like, Oh no, broke the motor mouth.
00:35:25
Speaker
oh Oh no, no. I broke the block. oh Oh, damn. So the block on the passenger side where the bolts go in, the bolt the the the block broke off. There's no fixing that. You got to put another motor. Yeah, that's a hello. I was like, all right, guys, I'm done. ah Main question. I mean, other than costing you a motor, it sounded like you had a hell of a fun time, though.

Support and Future Plans

00:35:54
Speaker
Yeah, it was a good time. And, um, I mean, i he, got I got in there for free. I got free food, free anything. And, um shout out to Briley Taylor. Hopefully he, I could pick him up as a sponsor.
00:36:10
Speaker
Yeah. not, I'll send it over him. But, uh, yeah you're on herere watching if not i'll not i'll send it over to him but ah I'm trying, I'm looking for, I am looking for sponsors. i currently do have a sponsor, which is my girlfriend, Sammy Mero with, she has her, she she has her own dog grooming business.
00:36:33
Speaker
It's called it a dog's journey um mobile grooming. And she has been such a good help with just frigate.
00:36:43
Speaker
She's awesome. I can't say anything more. um She's been super helpful. She's always had my back and she has helped me with some of the financial burdens of trying to race.
00:36:59
Speaker
So, and trying to build a Jeep. So I can't really say anything. She's been super helpful. And, uh, uh, babe, if you're watching, I love you. Well, that's another thing I've noticed too, that it's out of the even with my, my guys here in Ohio, including myself,
00:37:17
Speaker
and everybody I've had here on the guest, man, it's awesome when you got that supporting significant other that you know is right there with you. i'm sorry Even if it's just to sit in the garage and listen to you cuss and scream at the vehicle while you're doing shit or smashing your hand or something, don't go right.
00:37:36
Speaker
But it's nice to have that. I know some people that, and I'm sure you've had it too, they don't give a shit about their passion. And we're we're fortunate. that we have people that are very supportive of our passion for the tough truck racing, drag racing, whatever you might be in.
00:37:54
Speaker
It is everybody. I've everybody I've been around or talked to so far. They've really got a supporting significant other. And it's, and it's awesome to see that. I mean, get yeah scale out she's been there. she was there at a spring sling and she, was she supported me the whole time and watched and videoed and,
00:38:16
Speaker
I mean, i don't know what I'd do without her. She's f freaking awesome. Oh, yeah. So what's it like now we're going to get into this? Being around Brad and stuff, um what's it like being around watching and helping work on a megatruck, man?
00:38:32
Speaker
ah Oh, hes i know I know what that's referring to. um I mean, how do I say it? Um, I've been, I've been asked, Hey, can you help me out, uh, with this or that? Or, um, I think, to remember his name. I'm sorry. Uh, Jared caught, caught, um, he has his, um, he has, his son has a little mega, has a mega truck that Brad and Phil pretty much completely redesigned. And, um, I went over there to help them button it up, button that thing up for him. And, um,
00:39:13
Speaker
ah they call it the aggravator, if I remember correctly. i cant Yeah, i follow them I follow them on Facebook and everything, man. yeah I went over there and built him, buttoned that thing up so they could get it loaded up on the truck and trailer and get some other stuff done. and But like being around Brad, like when ah with Brad's truck, like...
00:39:39
Speaker
Like he has been talking about that thing and slowly building that thing for as long as I've known him. Like, I remember when that little, when that green truck was literally just a green, like when I saw it was a green truck in the back of the shop right and and to where it is now, it's fricking awesome. Like,
00:40:03
Speaker
Like when, when he unveiled that thing, do I was, I couldn't be more proud of him because i like I knew he had so much fricking time and money and and a lot of money and effort and, uh, seeing that thing and seeing him, seeing him fricking go out there and fricking send it. It's fricking awesome.
00:40:24
Speaker
Like, um, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I've been looking on his face, been following on Facebook and went back through the photos from when that thing first started, like you said, to what it was last year when he went out and let that fucker hang out there and freestyling it and stuff. to Can't wait to see him get it out this year when he gets back home and everything.
00:40:47
Speaker
yeah Yeah, like... ah Like said, I i only... i i can' To be honest, I can't even remember where I met. I believe I met Brad pretty much at Dennis's in the races. And then i had him build a little... fort Like the four-point cage i I brought up that we welded up in place. he had it ah i That's pretty much how I got to know him, was having him put that into a different Jeep that I was just kind of fucking around with.
00:41:18
Speaker
And pretty much... We've been friends since and just like back and forth, just freaking watching each other race and then be like, yeah. And then um going out to his little, going out to his little ah events at the ah compound where we just go mudding and Having good old time. Everything else, having a good old time. And then pretty much just going up from there. Same thing with little Phil. I mean, with Phil Hall Jr. I mean, i remember when we used to call, when he, we called him little Phil, because when I met Phil Jr., he was just a kid.
00:42:07
Speaker
he shit you He was a kid. Still just wet behind the ears. And then watching him go, like, he's sitting there like, man, going to race with you guys one day. going to beat you guys one day. And he's now, he's beating us. He's done it. He's done it.
00:42:25
Speaker
You get to see his up and coming. He's been part of it. He'd be like, hey, man, can I race your tough truck? Can I race your tough truck? And I'm like, man, here, take the keys and go. Go have fun.
00:42:39
Speaker
but but yeah He was talking he was talking he was talking out about it on the show. he yeah he would ah He was going around asking people and everything else to do that and everything. I thought that was kind of neat. you know I remember how Will and Rock Road back in the day. Yes, that's what, Rock Road. Yeah, that's where it was. It's been so long, Brad. I can't remember. It's it's been like 10 plus years.
00:43:03
Speaker
but yeah But I mean, yeah, just the camaraderie between... You, the Halls, and Brad, and it's it's it's amazing to have. And Brad will be the exclamation point. And if I could get Mr. Hall Sr. on here too, it'll really come full circle having the whole whole crew basically.
00:43:26
Speaker
Everybody's on the show. But, yeah, I love this where You know, you guys have been very supportive of this show and I'm, I'm very appreciative. as You guys come up here to tell stories.
00:43:38
Speaker
Likewise. So one of my other questions is one day, is there a mega truck in your future? No, I don't have that. I don't have that. I don't have that kind of money. Um,
00:43:55
Speaker
I have a lot of responsibility. I have a mortgage. I have a house. I get it. I understand. Trust me. I know Brad did it over a span of years, but I just ain't got that drive in me to do something like that. Tough truck racing is just it's been It's pretty much the thrill that I've been needed in my life because i've like I felt like I wasn't really doing anything fun in my life back when I was in my 20s.
00:44:26
Speaker
um After I got out of the Army, I was sitting there like, man, I got a lot. I got go do... I got to find some kind of crazy hobby. like I was already into Jeeps long before i started racing.
00:44:39
Speaker
um And then watching people race Jeeps and it really brought it out. I was just like, I got to do this. And it just went up from there. And in all honesty, I have thought about building a megatruck, but it's just...
00:44:55
Speaker
I just don't think I have. Stay within the adulting adulting budget that we can. I get it. I totally understand. I would love. like if i may If I made a crap ton more money than I'm making, like I make decent money now.
00:45:09
Speaker
um But if I made like if I made way more money, definitely. Or I could just be take out a loan and just go buy somebody's mega truck and go have fun with it. i don't know. right i Oh, no, I totally, I totally get where you're coming from. I was like me, that'd be like, a for me, the pro modified trucks are for tough trucks. you I ball, ball on a budget, but ball, ball and smart, man. I mean, you can still have just as much fun. We just don't have the horsepower that everybody, yeah but it's still to go out there and,
00:45:44
Speaker
be able to hang out with your friends and go racing and stuff. That's what it's all about to me. so And that's the same thing for you. but But, I mean, you two, for the Megatruck side, I mean, you actually get to live it through somebody else's eyes in a way because Brad, I mean, i mean that's awesome there.
00:46:02
Speaker
Yeah, I understand though the whole concept. Yes, they're not cheap. Even just, I'm just curious on one of the, I've got a marketplace looking at their Megatruck chassis.
00:46:14
Speaker
he Just ah the chassis cage and everything itself with no axles anything you're still easy looking at 10 grand and that's the bottom dollar I found so far and that's just a chassis.
00:46:24
Speaker
There's nothing to it. You got to add the axles your drivetrain the body all that stuff stuff so but I mean it's still neat that To know somebody that's got it, you can still enjoy it at the same time. you know i mean yeah mean what watching Watching them do it and and watching them build it and then just seeing them say, hey, I'm going to build a megatruck one day and then 10 years later, he's got one.
00:46:50
Speaker
I couldn't be more proud. I mean, it's it's it's it's definitely been coming full circle as of late with that. But, I mean, just seeing some of the stuff that the some of my friends are doing and, like, watching little Phil freaking grow up and now he's kicking our butts out there, it's freaking awesome. Yeah, that that that makes it worth it in the long run, man. I mean, and that's like with me.
00:47:14
Speaker
that i'm unfortunate one out of my three kids that's following in my footsteps in the motorsports world. I mean, my sitting my second oldest, she likes it and stuff, but it's just getting her over that.
00:47:26
Speaker
Once she gets behind the wheel and does it, I think it'll change her mind. But right now she's just kind of on edge. My son, he's done it, done it twice already. And he's already been chomping at the bit. So I'm like, well, at least I know they'll carry on one way or another one.
00:47:40
Speaker
Definitely.
00:47:43
Speaker
definitely That's freaking for sure. oh let me grab my charger before my phone dies. Oh, you're good, man. okay But yeah. ah Speaking of... brad sorry The Mango for me was a dream to one day drive Monsters 10 years of work to do. so to do It's a dedication with what I said I love and miss tough truck racing. I miss signing up with everyone.
00:48:08
Speaker
It's my favorite group of people. Dude, great. Tough truck community, I mean, it's it's not just here, but it's everywhere.
00:48:19
Speaker
um We got them out west. We got them in the Midwest. We got them here and in the central Midwest here in Ohio, stuff. And then we got you guys. It's amazing following everybody on Facebook that I follow that races tough trucks. I mean...
00:48:36
Speaker
Pat, we got gentlemen that where he's out of Oklahoma. The man will be 70 years old this year and still racing rough trucks out in Oklahoma, dude. So, I mean, that right says something. Exactly.
00:48:50
Speaker
I mean, it it's crazy. Like, um, um um Like I said, i'm horrible with names, but Brad knows his name. The the the creator, Twister.
00:49:02
Speaker
He's been racing Tough Truck for a long time. And he's he's, I believe he's every bit in his 60s or 70s, and he's still out there racing. It blows my mind.
00:49:15
Speaker
It's amazing to see the see the what's out there still competing. And i mean, competing like they're still young, and it's like, oh shit, the old dogs go hook up on us young bucks. The young dog's on the porch and it's like, damn.
00:49:30
Speaker
but But yeah, man. It's cool to see that. Yeah, it is.
00:49:38
Speaker
Definitely, yeah. Well, it gives hope for the next generation of things. Oh yeah, that's what I told Pat. I said, you are a stable for the future of Rough Trucks. You can't you can't put an age on anything. I mean, the man proves it going day in and day out at events all the time racing. So, I mean. Yeah.
00:49:58
Speaker
yeah that's a name Thomas White. Still out there getting it. So grateful for him letting me run Twister. yeah Twister, and I'm not going to lie, and Brad knows this, that rig was no joke.
00:50:12
Speaker
That rig had pissed off so many people that they changed the rules just so that he couldn't run it.
00:50:23
Speaker
You already know. You already know. And I hate to say it. I mean, and I hate to say it because...
00:50:34
Speaker
I mean, I thought the rule changes were kind of stupid. I really did. But then we had rule changes earlier, like before Twister and stuff.
00:50:45
Speaker
And then we all pitched a fit about it. and And then because they were letting other people run some other rigs and with like crazy stuff on it. and then we were like, well, hey, if they can do that, then we can do that, too.
00:51:05
Speaker
So the only that we started doing the moment that we start doing what those other guys were doing, then it's a freaking problem.
00:51:16
Speaker
They're scared of competition. That's why. mean and That's what it was. that's what it was Somebody's buddy got butt hurt and said, well, we can't have this, so we got to do something about it. Yeah.
00:51:28
Speaker
See it all the time. Trust me, Brad. I mean, Brad, i I was sitting there like, I know Brad's going to be pissed the F off about this. And he was, he's like, y'all, y'all just, y'all are just mad because I'm beating y'all's asses and you guys can't keep up.
00:51:47
Speaker
And, uh, I mean, what's in the set and the sad part is, it's just like, um, it was, it was all, it it was all, how do I say it was,
00:52:01
Speaker
it was It was pretty much just ah us it was just a group of people that were like, okay, well, we're going to change it back to the regular rules. I'm like, okay, well, what that doesn't that doesn't really hurt me anything because my Jeep's stock and I'm running stock shit. So, I mean.
00:52:17
Speaker
Right. but they they just kind of were like They were just kind of like literally trying to go after Twister because they're like, oh, that's not fair. He's got long arms and a built motor and this, this, and that. and I'm just like, y'all are just mad because he keeps beating y'all. Just stop. i mean Just let let him race.
00:52:38
Speaker
and and you know what and in The craziest part is he still raced that thing until he drove the wheels off of it up in Del Mar. Oh, yeah, man. oh yeah man yeah yeah And that's the thing. That's the thing. it's like And it's all across the board in any racing.
00:52:55
Speaker
Like just now with the ah snot rocking and drag racing LDR. He said only had good suspension. Old motor was nothing special. nothing so Yeah. But that's like the LDR. They just changed the rules on the coyote motor motor for him just here a month ago.
00:53:12
Speaker
And then they ran him out of the so ran him out of the circuit just because he was beating them in drag racing. There's people bitching and whining about it and they ran them out. Yeah. I mean, i don't know. Like, I remember, like, way back in the day when i first ah when I first started Tough Truck Racing, they didn't really have any, like, stupid, they didn't really, I wouldn't say stupid rules, but they didn't have, like, any specific rule rules of what you can run and stuff. We had a guy, if I remember correctly, he had a turboed Cherokee.
00:53:45
Speaker
He went out there and stomped everybody's ass. And next thing you know, oh, you guys can't have turbos unless it's factory equipped.
00:53:58
Speaker
wash it what Yeah, there's, I mean, i there there is that. But yeah, that is something though. Somebody actually went a different route and added a power adder to go racing.
00:54:09
Speaker
You don't see that in tough truck racing, you know. Most of the time, if it was allowed, you could run the nitrous bottles. That was about it.
00:54:20
Speaker
Yeah, we had a um then so I don't remember his name, but... Oh, yeah. ah I'm not going to say it out loud. um There was a guy. and He got caught, too. He he got banned. um He was running Nitrous in his Tough Truck.
00:54:38
Speaker
And... we all I already knew because he blabbed a little bit to me about it. And I'm like, dude, they're going to find it. They're going to see it. He did his damnedest trying to hide it, but he finally got caught.
00:54:53
Speaker
um But um I'm not going to mention his name because if I mention his name, it's just going to irritate me because I don't like the guy. You're good, man. But yeah, that, you know, I mean,
00:55:08
Speaker
With the playing field you guys got, because I've looked at the rules for your class and stuff, it's a pretty level playing field. It all comes down to the damn driver. Yeah. If you may know what you're doing, I mean, like I said, like i don't I don't run anything special. I mean, I run, ah like my Jeep had a 4.0, and the only thing I've really done to it is I did a i had the tune I had the computer tuned.
00:55:38
Speaker
I had swapped a 4.7 V8 throttle body onto it. And that was a task in itself. And because you went from like 56, stock 56 millimeter to a freaking 70 millimeter. And and then to andx i were it was a huge difference and it definitely woke it woke it up. But I mean, I'm not running anything crazy.
00:56:06
Speaker
you Can't forget the bathroom fan forced induction and K&N intake, he said. Can't forget the bathroom fan. I know you! Oh, my God. I'm surprised you remember that, Weiss.
00:56:25
Speaker
Yeah, so the guy the guy that I'm not going to mention, should shoot that. He had... um I got to look. He had a bathroom fan hooked up to freaking cold air intake blowing air into the into the intake manifold, but it wasn't blowing like, how do I say it?
00:56:54
Speaker
It wasn't moving enough air to even make a difference. um But still though, the but just still the concept of putting a bathroom fan on that, that is crazy.
00:57:06
Speaker
Holy shit, man. I'm reading Brad's comment now. A full transparent effected me. I was bummed as fuck because I feel as tight still is. I just didn't.
00:57:17
Speaker
I just didn't hurt. Yeah. You got a point. um But yeah, like... um and the the whole The whole bathroom fan, that was hilarious. I would have probably pissed myself laughing if I had seen something like that. Oh, I saw it. I'm sitting there like... very I'm sitting there because he opened it up and I said, what the hell is that?
00:57:44
Speaker
And the the driver wasn't around the Jeep. One of his buddies was showing me. And I was sitting there like... is Are y'all serious right now? says Okay. shit good It was pretty fun.
00:58:01
Speaker
It was pretty fun. Hell yeah. I mean, it it it didn't even move enough air to really... make a difference but yeah like those things ain't very powerful enough to be do much of nothing other than blow the dust off the ah the air filter and that's about it if you're about it yeah so goals for this year um you what do you have but what do you have for goals for this year since since uh spring slings done um
00:58:36
Speaker
Is there at least a couple more races with the new Tough Truck if you get it done? Or is there going to be more spectating on your side? of um I'm probably going to spectate over the more than likely over the summer. i do want to um i want to debut the new Tough Truck at North versus South.
00:58:54
Speaker
um That's in September. Usually, i try not to do a lot of things over the summer, mainly because it's it's hot. so You guys get the humidity and shit like we do in Ohio. he gets It gets muggy, everything else. Oh, yeah. We usually get we get it hit pretty hard, but usually in the summertime, I do i i don't do a lot. if there's a rate like We had a race. i remember at Morgan's Corner, literally in the middle.
00:59:24
Speaker
it was August or July, and it was probably the most miserable day because it was 100-plus degrees, and we were... It was bad when we're out there on the track we're're waiting to race and we're literally just sitting in the shade next to our tough trucks because it's that hot.
00:59:40
Speaker
um that That's a miserable day. just be awesome and oh youre miserable I've learned my lesson just to stay away. like ill i'll If there's like an event somewhere in the summertime, I usually skip it i don't i'll just or I'll just go spectate. But...
00:59:58
Speaker
but I don't do well in heat. So don't blame you. But my goal is to at least have it at least have my new tough truck ready for for north versus south.
01:00:11
Speaker
And
01:00:16
Speaker
hopefully get to like, I know there's a few other events that are still popping up like the we're having. They have it's called the farm and you worry. North Carolina. okay That's a fairly new track. Mike Wittek, he went out there and he he won the whole thing.
01:00:35
Speaker
um Pretty much. I want to try that track out. I saw the track layout and I'm, I like it. And it's, it's about four, it's about four hours and some change from me, but I'm used to going to you worry national park anyways. Cause I go wheeling out there all the time.
01:00:54
Speaker
Okay. don i Um, it's just a little bit of a hike, but, uh, with I wanted to go, but I knew it was the weekend after Spring Sling, and I was like, I'm retiring i'm retiring Kaiser at Spring Sling because that's where I started at with Spring Sling with Kaiser, and I was like, I'm going to retire at Spring Sling. Understandable.
01:01:19
Speaker
So... um Hopefully I'll have it ready before. I said, hopefully have it ready because it like most most of the hard works, I wouldn't say most of the hard work, but a lot of the ah a lot of the most difficult work is already done with the new tough truck. I just have to get a drivetrain into it and then get the axles into it and finish up everything else.
01:01:43
Speaker
So basically, in a way, I look at it kind of the little stuff to get it to where it needs to be ready to functioning and everything else. i'm looking forward I'm looking forward to seeing the debut. Maybe after the North versus South, you get to run it, maybe I can get the everybody up here, get Will Phil up here, get Brad because he should be home by then, get us all up here and we'll have a We can have a Monday or Thursday night, whatever ends up working for everybody. Get everybody up this fall and we can talk about the race season for all of us, including myself. And we'll just have a good old time.

01:02:43
Speaker
Um, and know it's not really a question, but as far as comments go, keep doing what you're doing. Hell yeah. Thank you. You're welcome. So Josh, I want to thank you for coming up. you got anybody else you want to shout out besides Brad, your girlfriend and all and the holes?
01:02:59
Speaker
Anybody? Shout out to my fabricator, uh, Steven Taylor. Um, shout out to my fabricator stephen taylor um He is probably, he he's he's the best fabricator that I've had.
01:03:14
Speaker
um Other than Brad, and I mean, I've had Brad do some stuff for me, but Stephen Taylor's, um he is, like i said, he if it wasn't for him, there's actually, if it wasn't for him, there's actually, wouldn't be a lot of people in the tough trucks right now.
01:03:31
Speaker
Because he has helped build countless tough trucks. Yeah. um nice he He's over at Taylor. His he he his company is Taylor Motorsports, but he just does it out of the garage in his backyard, and he does all this fabrication.
01:03:50
Speaker
The stuff he does, like I can't say it enough. I mean, that Dana 30 underneath Kaiser, that thing is four years old.
01:04:02
Speaker
four years old and that thing is still straighter than error the air. The ball joints are now finally freaking breaking out of that thing. Cause now it looks like it's, I thought, I thought I finally bent that axle. No, was the ball joints pretty much on their way out. And now it's smiling just a little bit because of that.
01:04:19
Speaker
But, um, he's built, he's built my, I call it my indestructible axle and I have had the only thing I'm going to be honest with you. The only thing that I've had break on that axle it is spider gears before I switched to a locker. And and just recently, the well, it wasn't really axle. Well, wasn't the axle housing related, but my ah the driver's side axle shaft finally snapped and those were stock.
01:04:55
Speaker
okay I've never broken up an axle shaft since I've been racing Kaiser. And that's the first time I did it, but that was because I sent them. Oh yeah. You have that, man.
