Introduction and Pairing Announcement

00:00:01
Speaker
Hey, everybody.
00:00:01
Speaker
Welcome back to Let's Get Pairing.
00:00:04
Speaker
This is episode number 25, and we're going to be smoking the Los Statos Deluxe from General Cigar Company, STG, Forge Cigar Company, one of those.
00:00:15
Speaker
I mean, actually two of those, but we'll get to that.
00:00:18
Speaker
We'll get to that.
00:00:19
Speaker
For now, grab yourself a drink, grab yourself a cigar, and let's get pairing.
00:00:22
Speaker
Let's get pairing.
00:00:41
Speaker
And we're back watching Dennis have something in his eyeball.
00:00:45
Speaker
Welcome back, everybody.
00:00:47
Speaker
I'm your host, Tripp, here in the Casa de Monte Cristo studios in sunny Florida with my co-host, Dennis, back in the game, back in the darkness dungeon of death.
00:01:01
Speaker
Triple D, we're rolling out.
00:01:03
Speaker
Dennis, how are you doing this week?
00:01:06
Speaker
You know, I was doing great until I got some tobacco dust in my eye from cutting my cigar.
00:01:13
Speaker
It'll get you.
00:01:14
Speaker
It's the wrong place.
00:01:15
Speaker
Don't put tobacco in your eyes.
00:01:16
Speaker
It's not good for you, I don't think.
00:01:18
Speaker
I mean, you can only... You never know until you try it, right?
00:01:23
Speaker
You gotta try it first.
00:01:24
Speaker
That way you know if you like it or not.
00:01:26
Speaker
That is... We were talking a little bit about that.
00:01:28
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's a fair point.
00:01:32
Speaker
But I'm happy to be back.
00:01:33
Speaker
Kind of.
00:01:34
Speaker
We'll call it
00:01:35
Speaker
sort of back not official full studio kind of setup but we're kind of getting there better than the the piss porch or the porch of purgatory yeah exactly you're out of purgatory back in the dank dungeon of doom and dark yeah quadruple d's now quadruple d's we're rolling in bigger and better
00:02:00
Speaker
Man, I'm letting my cigar go out already because we're talking.

Cigar Introduction and Collaboration Details

00:02:03
Speaker
All right, today, this is episode 25.
00:02:05
Speaker
I don't remember if I said that or not.
00:02:07
Speaker
We're smoking the Los Statos Deluxe Limited Edition.
00:02:12
Speaker
I assume at some point this is going to be called the Limited Edition 2024 because they'll probably have more of them eventually.
00:02:20
Speaker
But for now, this is just called the Los Statos Deluxe Limited Edition.
00:02:24
Speaker
Now, Los Statos Deluxe...
00:02:26
Speaker
is a brand that, uh, general cigar STG has owned for a while.
00:02:33
Speaker
Um, in 2022, they acquired room one-on-one cigars.
00:02:37
Speaker
And as part of that, they brought on Matt Booth as their creative director at STG.
00:02:43
Speaker
Um, STG is kind of the parent company.
00:02:45
Speaker
Um, general cigar and forged cigars are, uh, subsidiaries, I guess, of, uh, that operate under STG.
00:02:55
Speaker
Um,
00:02:56
Speaker
So they revived the Los Statos Deluxe brand with this new label that I think looks pretty snazzy.
00:03:03
Speaker
They definitely got the packaging going for these things.
00:03:05
Speaker
Yeah, man.
00:03:07
Speaker
And this brand is kind of a collaboration between two people that we like very much for the most part.
00:03:14
Speaker
Matt Booth and Justin Andrews are the co-heads of this brand, which is wild, right?
00:03:22
Speaker
Knowing both of those guys.
00:03:24
Speaker
Knowing both of those guys, it's an amazing partnership, I tell you that.
00:03:30
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:03:32
Speaker
So in 2024, this year in March, they released this one, Delostatos Deluxe Limited Edition.
00:03:39
Speaker
And they brought in somebody else to help them collaborate with their collaborations.
00:03:44
Speaker
They needed some additional collaboration.
00:03:47
Speaker
So they brought in William Ventura to make the cigars at Ventura Cigars in the Dominican Republic.
00:03:54
Speaker
Interestingly, based on the blend info that was in the press release they gave me, there's not any Dominican tobacco in this cigar, which is interesting.
00:04:04
Speaker
Very surprised.
00:04:06
Speaker
So the wrapper on this, as I'm sure you can guess, Dennis, but, you know, at home, you can't necessarily tell the difference on camera, especially if you're listening to the podcast.
00:04:16
Speaker
Like, you're, you know, you can't tell what wrapper we're smoking through your earbuds.
00:04:22
Speaker
You're, what are they called?
00:04:23
Speaker
AirPods.
00:04:25
Speaker
Man, I'm getting old.
00:04:26
Speaker
I forgot the name of AirPods.
00:04:28
Speaker
What are the kids called?
00:04:29
Speaker
Yeah, man.
00:04:31
Speaker
Rapper is Mexican San Andreas Which you know Looks like Mexican San Andreas
00:04:38
Speaker
binder is Ecuadorian Sumatra.
00:04:40
Speaker
And as far as the fillers they tell us, there could be other fillers in here.
00:04:44
Speaker
I would guess if there were, they'd probably be Dominican.
00:04:48
Speaker
But what they tell us is there's Connecticut Broadleaf, Pennsylvania Broadleaf, and Corojo 98 from Nicaragua in the filler.
00:04:56
Speaker
We're smoking the... This is only available in one size.
00:04:58
Speaker
It's this one.
00:04:59
Speaker
It comes real nicely presented with some tissue paper and this like super intense...
00:05:08
Speaker
wrapper on the outside um very very uh you know eye-griving packaging but that does come at a cost of 16.99 per cigar which is a lot for a little five and a half figurato it is uh yeah yeah man definitely but that being said i've
00:05:30
Speaker
You know, I've just lit it a little bit after yours, but I'm kind of liking it so far, man.
00:05:35
Speaker
The one thing is I retro hailed it a little too soon.
00:05:39
Speaker
Got some punch.
00:05:41
Speaker
It's got some punch, man, and a little heavy.
00:05:43
Speaker
I went a little heavy on the retro hail.
00:05:45
Speaker
My ears popped.
00:05:46
Speaker
So I feel good.
00:05:47
Speaker
I feel refreshed.
00:05:48
Speaker
Maybe that's what you need.
00:05:49
Speaker
Help you out with some of your medical issues.
00:05:51
Speaker
Keep those ears popping.
00:05:54
Speaker
You know, keep your balance on point.
00:05:56
Speaker
I just constantly retro hailed in this thing.
00:05:59
Speaker
Just hit the tree next to my house.
00:06:01
Speaker
Just got hit.
00:06:03
Speaker
I'm looking out the window at it.
00:06:05
Speaker
I've gotten so used to it, it's just background noise now.
00:06:08
Speaker
Like, we get so much thunder here, man.
00:06:10
Speaker
It's crazy.
00:06:11
Speaker
I've read, I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard people say and read that the area I'm in has more lightning strikes per year than anywhere else in the country.

Cocktail and Beer Discussions

00:06:22
Speaker
It's a lot.
00:06:23
Speaker
More lightning strikes than gators that drink light beer?
00:06:27
Speaker
I don't believe it, man.
00:06:28
Speaker
Yeah, that's what they say.
00:06:30
Speaker
That's what they say.
00:06:32
Speaker
More lightning strikes than gators and lightbeard combined.
00:06:36
Speaker
A lot of lightning strikes, Doug.
00:06:38
Speaker
Damn.
00:06:39
Speaker
How are you feeling about this cigar so far?
00:06:42
Speaker
It's spicing you up?
00:06:44
Speaker
It's spicy.
00:06:44
Speaker
So yeah, it's spicy, but really to break it down, it's not, it's still developing for me.
00:06:49
Speaker
So it's one of those things where I talk about the sort of the dusty quality sometimes.
00:06:54
Speaker
I think part of that is that it's a perfecto.
00:06:56
Speaker
Like that, that first half inch takes a little bit to get going.
00:07:00
Speaker
Definitely part of that.
00:07:02
Speaker
The dryness that I'm getting is it just, it's for a lot of the stuff that I smoke, I'm just so used to it now.
00:07:08
Speaker
I don't even think about it.
00:07:09
Speaker
So I generally kind of almost ignore the first third.
00:07:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:07:15
Speaker
Just to give it time to warm up a little bit, to start smoking, to get into a pace with the cigar.
00:07:20
Speaker
And then just the thing I think for mine, kept it a little under, a little under on humidification.
00:07:28
Speaker
So I'm trying not to crack it.
00:07:30
Speaker
I'm being very gentle with it.
00:07:32
Speaker
All right.
00:07:34
Speaker
I'm thinking like for me, it's the dryness I think is definitely there.
00:07:38
Speaker
Like,
00:07:39
Speaker
It's got that typical San Andreas mix of powdered sugar, dry cocoa, and dry earth at the same time.
00:07:48
Speaker
And it like, I was going to say what it reminds me of, but I'm not even going to bother because I can't even think of the, something to make an example out of right now.
00:07:59
Speaker
There's a lot of spice in this first, you know, half inch or so, so far.
00:08:04
Speaker
I'm curious to see if that keeps going throughout the cigar.
00:08:07
Speaker
I don't really know what to expect from this cigar because like you, this is the first time I'm smoking it.
00:08:14
Speaker
But so far, I think it's starting off good.
00:08:17
Speaker
I like the Retro Hell, though.
00:08:19
Speaker
That's for me, off the first light, that's the thing that really made me feel very happy.
00:08:24
Speaker
So I'm going to run with it.
00:08:26
Speaker
Yeah, I like it, too.
00:08:28
Speaker
The Retro Hell is a real nice mix of a lot of spice with some sweetness in there.
00:08:34
Speaker
And it's so far so good, right?
00:08:37
Speaker
But this is a pairing show.
00:08:39
Speaker
We got to get to pairing at some point.
00:08:41
Speaker
So we might as well do it a little earlier than we sometimes do.
00:08:43
Speaker
Because this cigar, like you said, is kicking off, you know, not on the slow side, but we're still getting into it.
00:08:51
Speaker
Because we haven't gotten past that end of the perfecto point yet.
00:08:57
Speaker
All right, so first up for me, I don't have anything super interesting for this one.
00:09:04
Speaker
But I decided to make it old-fashioned.
00:09:06
Speaker
So I got a little bit of old-fashioned history.
00:09:07
Speaker
I'm using Mezcal Sacrificio, which, as I've talked about before, is a ABC Total Wine.
00:09:16
Speaker
I think it's Total Wine.
00:09:18
Speaker
House brand of Mezcal.
00:09:21
Speaker
It's made in Oaxaca and real Mezcal, but...
00:09:25
Speaker
There's not a whole lot of information or history on the brand.
00:09:29
Speaker
They have a website that talks about their product line, and that's about it.
00:09:34
Speaker
You know, being a house brand.
00:09:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:09:37
Speaker
So instead I went the other route.
00:09:38
Speaker
I decided to make an old fashioned, uh, in the old fashioned way I could find.
00:09:42
Speaker
But before that, the old fashioned, uh, is a drink that everybody knows these days.
00:09:48
Speaker
Uh, and the story of it is somewhat lost to time because, uh, things like that just weren't well documented in the early to mid 1800s.
00:09:58
Speaker
Um, so nobody knows exactly when it started, who came up with it.
00:10:03
Speaker
Um,
00:10:04
Speaker
But kind of the prevailing story is that it came out in the mid-1800s, sometime 1840-ish.
00:10:09
Speaker
I've seen some say 1880s, but it sounds like 1880s might be when it solidified into what it is now.
00:10:23
Speaker
originally an old fashioned was in contrast with the cocktails that were popular at the time.
00:10:31
Speaker
Uh, there were a lot of cocktails that had a ton of ingredients, uh, that had, you know, based on things like chartreuse, absinthe or curacao, um,
00:10:39
Speaker
that were a lot more involved.
00:10:43
Speaker
And so asking for a simpler cocktail started to become asking for an old-fashioned cocktail.
00:10:49
Speaker
And then eventually, nobody knows when, it turned into the title for a cocktail recipe that is any spirit.
00:10:59
Speaker
With bitters, sugar, and water.
00:11:02
Speaker
So even the first old fashions weren't necessarily with bourbon or rye or even whiskey at all.
00:11:12
Speaker
There was a time where you could get a gin old fashioned and it was totally normal.
00:11:17
Speaker
Old fashion was just what you wanted in addition to the spirit.
00:11:21
Speaker
Since then, people think around the time of Prohibition, when it ended and cocktails came back into fashion, of course, after being banned for 10 years, 11 years, something like that.
00:11:36
Speaker
then old-fashioned became a specific cocktail with whiskey or rye.
00:11:43
Speaker
I've decided to go the mezcal route because I meant to do it last time, and I poured whiskey in my glass, and then that was too late.
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah, man.
00:11:52
Speaker
But for my recipe, I went a little old-fashioned, and I don't know if I've even shown you these, Dennis.
00:11:59
Speaker
Have I?
00:12:01
Speaker
No.
00:12:02
Speaker
This is the old Mr. Boston Deluxe official bartender's guide.
00:12:09
Speaker
Deluxe is great.
00:12:10
Speaker
I love that part.

Craft Beer Industry Insights

00:12:11
Speaker
You like how, look at that.
00:12:12
Speaker
Deluxe.
00:12:14
Speaker
Deluxe?
00:12:15
Speaker
Not deluxe.
00:12:16
Speaker
Deluxe.
00:12:19
Speaker
So I went with their old-fashioned recipe, which it turns out is just the same old-fashioned recipe we use now.
00:12:27
Speaker
You know, it's a sugar cube, a little bit of bitters, mash them up, put a little water in, add your whiskey, and then garnish.
00:12:36
Speaker
Now, let's say, let's not malign the good name of an old-fashioned, because those three ingredients, while simple, can be modulated in really cool ways, like different kinds of bitters, different kinds of spirits.
00:12:46
Speaker
There's some cool stuff there, man.
00:12:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:12:49
Speaker
But the reason I bring this out, this is this old Mr. Boston Deluxe Official Bartending Guide.
00:12:56
Speaker
I'm sorry.
00:12:57
Speaker
I misspoke.
00:12:58
Speaker
Deluxe Official Bartending Guide.
00:13:00
Speaker
This one I have.
00:13:01
Speaker
This is my oldest.
00:13:03
Speaker
But I actually, like, I don't remember which one I got first, but I found one of these at a Goodwill.com.
00:13:09
Speaker
And I just thought that's so cool when I was, I don't know, maybe late teens or early 20s.
00:13:14
Speaker
I don't remember if I even drank yet.
00:13:17
Speaker
But I started to hunt them down and I now have...
00:13:22
Speaker
I think eight of them all printed in different years.
00:13:25
Speaker
This one was printed in 1941 and it is a reprint of the original released in 1935.
00:13:32
Speaker
But I've got them, you know, from random years between 1941 and 2015 or so, I think is my, my newest one.
00:13:44
Speaker
Yeah, that's my little, I don't collect many things, but that's one of the things that I started collecting and they just have stayed with me for a while.
00:13:53
Speaker
So I'm going to take a couple sips of this here old-fashioned and let you talk about your first pairing of the evening.
00:14:00
Speaker
Yeah, dude, that is a fine-looking glass, I'll tell you that.
00:14:04
Speaker
Why, thank you.
00:14:05
Speaker
That's good.
00:14:07
Speaker
I almost went, I actually thought about doing cocktails, all cocktails tonight.
00:14:11
Speaker
And well, truth be told, I have a bunch of beer I need to get through.
00:14:17
Speaker
So tonight's going to be a beer episode and that's okay.
00:14:20
Speaker
Sometimes it has to be that way, right?
00:14:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:14:25
Speaker
Let me grab this can and show you what I got going on over here.
00:14:27
Speaker
Check that out.
00:14:28
Speaker
You may have seen that before.
00:14:31
Speaker
Oh, yes.
00:14:32
Speaker
Road Brewing Street Cart.
00:14:34
Speaker
I haven't seen Street Cart before.
00:14:36
Speaker
I've had Mango Cart several times.
00:14:38
Speaker
Yeah, so Mango Cart is the flagship kind of cart thing.
00:14:42
Speaker
So this one is lime and salt.
00:14:43
Speaker
I'll get into that just in a little bit.
00:14:46
Speaker
But their Mango Cart kicked off this really cool thing now where they have a box.
00:14:49
Speaker
It's all carts.
00:14:50
Speaker
It's all different carts.
00:14:51
Speaker
It's Mango Cart, Lava Cart.
00:14:55
Speaker
There's a spicy, I think it's a spicy Mango Cart.
00:14:58
Speaker
Nice.
00:14:59
Speaker
like a fiery, fiery mango cart, which is excellent.
00:15:03
Speaker
And, and then this one, which is the, the lime, the lime and salt one.
00:15:08
Speaker
And so these guys are out in the headquartered in the at water village area of Los Angeles neighborhood, I should say.
00:15:14
Speaker
And they started back in 2011.
00:15:16
Speaker
Apparently, they're still to this day the largest brewery in representing L.A.
00:15:22
Speaker
Wow.
00:15:22
Speaker
It's kind of a big deal.
00:15:24
Speaker
But also thinking about the fact that they distribute to both of us says a lot about how big they are.
00:15:29
Speaker
Right.
00:15:29
Speaker
Well, I'm glad you brought that up.
00:15:31
Speaker
I'm going to tell you a little bit more as to why that happened, how that happened, if you will.
00:15:37
Speaker
think about for a second though 2011 there was a lot going on with beer the beer world was kind of booming they had all this crazy IPA stuff going on Eddie Topper was kind of taken over the country by storm Stone was a big deal we had a lot of west coast IPAs a lot of cool stuff like Green Flash was coming out East Coast stuff was I miss Green Flash me too
00:15:59
Speaker
Yeah, man, it's been so many years.
00:16:01
Speaker
But so a lot of people were starting really cool projects back then.
00:16:04
Speaker
And so one of the very few pioneers in craft beer as a female is the founder of Golden Road.
00:16:15
Speaker
I can't think of the name.
00:16:17
Speaker
I keep thinking of like Golden something.
00:16:18
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:19
Speaker
I know what you mean.
00:16:21
Speaker
Some names that happens in my head where I'm like, I just can't get the name to stick, right?
00:16:27
Speaker
Yeah, it was a good one.
00:16:29
Speaker
It keeps coming up.
00:16:30
Speaker
I keep thinking of it.
00:16:33
Speaker
Meg Gill is the founder and one of very few pioneers in craft beer in the US who is a woman, which is pretty cool.
00:16:40
Speaker
They started a pretty typical system, 15-barrel system, and shortly after they upgraded to a 50-barrel system,
00:16:49
Speaker
and really started pumping out a lot of beer.
00:16:51
Speaker
And that's when around 2015, they started a partnership with Anheuser-Busch.
00:16:57
Speaker
So the reason why you and I and everybody else across the country can get this beer is largely in part to Anheuser-Busch.
00:17:06
Speaker
Really, that was kind of a distribution partnership rather than a, right?
00:17:12
Speaker
And we see this sometimes on one side, it's just distribution or the other side, they'll take over completely.
00:17:17
Speaker
And all those breweries end up disappearing.
00:17:20
Speaker
In this case, I think they got a pretty good deal where they can use all the distribution channels and just focus on production.
00:17:27
Speaker
Yeah, I think... What year did that happen?
00:17:30
Speaker
2015?
00:17:30
Speaker
2015.
00:17:30
Speaker
I think that's kind of right around when Anheuser-Busch realized that them buying small breweries was killing those breweries.
00:17:41
Speaker
Because once they bought it, a lot of the hardcore customers no longer wanted it.
00:17:47
Speaker
They would find something else.
00:17:50
Speaker
And that's where brands like Green Flash...
00:17:55
Speaker
Clown Shoes.
00:17:57
Speaker
Oh, Clown Shoes.
00:17:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:00
Speaker
What's the one?
00:18:01
Speaker
Ballast Point.
00:18:02
Speaker
That was the one I was trying to think of that I couldn't get in my head.
00:18:04
Speaker
I kept wanting to call it Constellation Point.
00:18:07
Speaker
It was, yeah.
00:18:08
Speaker
So Ballast Point was doing really well when they had their entire Barreled series, the Heavy Seas.
00:18:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:18:16
Speaker
was amazing they had some really great stuff and and unfortunately they disappeared but uh yeah i guess they they realized you know that that old meme this this kills the crab they figured it out like wow we're not going to do this anymore so thankfully they're still around i've seen them more than ever in the last year me too i've had them before but i think the last year they really ramped up and the mango series for sure has been killer
00:18:42
Speaker
And it's just a really cool.
00:18:45
Speaker
Everything is like brewery branded.
00:18:46
Speaker
So I'm representing like four different breweries at any given time.
00:18:49
Speaker
That's the way it goes.
00:18:52
Speaker
But just lime, a little lime, a little salt, 4.8%, which is really nice.
00:18:56
Speaker
Just an easy drinking, really great summer beer, I think.
00:19:01
Speaker
And purposely, purposely put together with this cigar, I wanted to add a little bit of refreshment, a little minerality to it.
00:19:09
Speaker
Nice.
00:19:10
Speaker
Amen.
00:19:12
Speaker
This mezcal old-fashioned, I'm not sure, is working.
00:19:14
Speaker
It's very good.
00:19:17
Speaker
But it has like, maybe I just added too much bitters because it's just got a little bit of extra like intense bitterness on the palate that I'm not used to getting from an old-fashioned.
00:19:31
Speaker
What kind of bitters is used for that?
00:19:33
Speaker
Ango.
00:19:35
Speaker
Oh, Ango.
00:19:35
Speaker
Ah, dude.
00:19:36
Speaker
The classic.
00:19:38
Speaker
Next time, get yourself some of them cocoa bitters.
00:19:40
Speaker
I need to get cocoa bitters.
00:19:42
Speaker
The problem is... Olay bitters?
00:19:44
Speaker
Very nice.
00:19:45
Speaker
Here's the problem.
00:19:47
Speaker
Problem is, if I get anything that is not Angostura bitters, I'm going to have a hundred different bottles of bitters.
00:19:56
Speaker
Yes, that is exactly how this is supposed to happen.
00:19:59
Speaker
It's exactly how that works.
00:20:01
Speaker
Yeah, I guess so.
00:20:02
Speaker
And you can all pop your own bar.
00:20:04
Speaker
That's great.
00:20:04
Speaker
I guess that's true.
00:20:06
Speaker
But yeah, the problem, the reason I don't go out and buy more bidders is because I'm afraid.
00:20:12
Speaker
I'm afraid that it will become a problem because I know that's how I do, right?
00:20:19
Speaker
But it's working okay with the cigar.
00:20:22
Speaker
It's just not working on its own as a cocktail right now, I don't think.
00:20:26
Speaker
That smokiness, I think, really adds something to it from the mezcal.
00:20:32
Speaker
But it just kind of combines with something in a weird way.
00:20:34
Speaker
It gets extra bitter.
00:20:35
Speaker
Maybe it's the orange peel.
00:20:37
Speaker
Good evening, Sam.
00:20:38
Speaker
Thanks for joining us.
00:20:40
Speaker
How's that, what was it called, street cart?
00:20:44
Speaker
Street?
00:20:45
Speaker
Oh, God, now I get to look at it.
00:20:46
Speaker
Yeah, it's street cart.
00:20:48
Speaker
which has got a really cool... Check that out.
00:20:52
Speaker
Sorry for the glare there.
00:20:54
Speaker
So is it the same kind of like not quite IPA pale ale style as mango cart?
00:21:02
Speaker
Yeah, exactly.
00:21:03
Speaker
Yeah, same vibe, same... I suspect it's the same bass even.
00:21:07
Speaker
Very likely.
00:21:09
Speaker
Instead of doing... And that would make sense.
00:21:10
Speaker
If I was brewing it at scale, I would use the same bass and then just modulate the...
00:21:17
Speaker
Whatever the addition is in this case, it's lime and the salt.
00:21:20
Speaker
I was mostly curious if it was more of something like a Mexican lager style.
00:21:27
Speaker
No, I thought it was going to be and it's not.
00:21:30
Speaker
This is basically mango cart without the mango and lime and salt.
00:21:35
Speaker
I like that.
00:21:36
Speaker
But if you close your eyes for a second, you can get the essence of the mango cart.
00:21:41
Speaker
Which is cool.
00:21:43
Speaker
We don't see enough breweries doing that.
00:21:46
Speaker
where people will say, oh, that's a cop-out.
00:21:48
Speaker
It's the same base recipe.
00:21:49
Speaker
All the beers are going to taste the same.
00:21:51
Speaker
Yes, if you don't do a good job, probably.
00:21:54
Speaker
I always love that.
00:21:55
Speaker
Like when Prairie has done their bomb, they've done... All the bombs.
00:22:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:03
Speaker
Well, they've done not just a bunch of cool variants of it, but they've also done... I don't remember what it was called.
00:22:09
Speaker
They did the deconstructed bomb, but then they also had one that was like just no bomb.
00:22:15
Speaker
Like, I don't remember what it was called, but it was the Prairie bomb with none of the adjuncts in it.
00:22:21
Speaker
that was just like a straight stout.
00:22:23
Speaker
I don't know.
00:22:24
Speaker
It's just interesting to taste it that way, right?

Pairing Reflections and Experiments

00:22:28
Speaker
If I'm tasting it with that, I want to try it without that, just so I know what the difference is.
00:22:33
Speaker
I'm telling you, man, I'm going to say this now, and if somebody out there hears this and decides to do it before I do, totally fine.
00:22:40
Speaker
All the respect to you.
00:22:41
Speaker
Please do it.
00:22:42
Speaker
I want to see this happen.
00:22:43
Speaker
But my dream is to do a three-bottle box set.
00:22:52
Speaker
components all three components of a single beer so fully deconstructing their individual beers on their own but then you can combine them in different ways and sort of walk through the flavor profile of a single set of beers if you will that's an awesome idea like i think that would be so much fun and you do like a limited you know series once a year or twice a year for the holidays or something like that could be fun that's a good idea
00:23:16
Speaker
All right.
00:23:17
Speaker
So for my next pairing tonight, I've gone with an absolute classic.
00:23:21
Speaker
We talked about it last week, and I've been eyeballing it all week waiting to crack this thing open.
00:23:30
Speaker
Unibrew founded in 1993.
00:23:33
Speaker
Chambly, Quebec.
00:23:35
Speaker
Yes.
00:23:36
Speaker
Originally it was started in 1990 by two business partners who had, they had previously been involved with a brewery that we'll get to later.
00:23:46
Speaker
And they decided to divest from that brewery.
00:23:48
Speaker
You start a new business to empower emerging craft breweries in Quebec to distribute more widely.
00:23:54
Speaker
They would, they would distribute to the U S and distribute across Canada.
00:23:59
Speaker
Um,
00:24:00
Speaker
So they had, I think it was about eight breweries that became part of this distribution project for them.
00:24:07
Speaker
A couple of them left after just a couple of years.
00:24:10
Speaker
And they kind of went back to the drawing board and decided this isn't going to work out.
00:24:16
Speaker
It's not working for us.
00:24:17
Speaker
It's not working for the breweries.
00:24:20
Speaker
Why don't we buy Masawapi, Masawipi, which was the brewery they had previously been involved with.
00:24:29
Speaker
It's a hard name.
00:24:31
Speaker
So they acquired their partner to brew the beer.
00:24:36
Speaker
In 1993, they kind of merged the brewery and the distribution company to form Unibrew Brewery.
00:24:46
Speaker
And, I mean, the rest is history, right?
00:24:48
Speaker
They've always focused on very Belgian styles, and they have become one of the most award-winning breweries in Canada.
00:24:58
Speaker
And this beer right here has,
00:25:02
Speaker
become their flagship.
00:25:04
Speaker
I couldn't find when the first release of this was, but I have to assume it was in the mid-90s, like soon after they started.
00:25:11
Speaker
It was, you're right, mid-90s, 96 maybe.
00:25:16
Speaker
I mean, yeah, something like that sounds right.
00:25:20
Speaker
Something like that.
00:25:21
Speaker
And I know, and I heard about it even before I even knew anything about craft beer of any kind.
00:25:26
Speaker
We really didn't have craft beer, but there was always some guy, right?
00:25:30
Speaker
Now we're the old guys.
00:25:31
Speaker
There was some guy, like this old wizard guy on the park bench who just would mumble shit and would just randomly talk to you about random stuff.
00:25:37
Speaker
Like, oh, you know, once I was in Canada and I had this beer, it was great.
00:25:41
Speaker
You can never figure it out.
00:25:42
Speaker
And then it hits you five or six years later.
00:25:44
Speaker
You go, fuck, that guy was, I know exactly what he's talking about now.
00:25:47
Speaker
French, of course, for the end of the world.
00:25:52
Speaker
They named it after the belief of European explorers that when they reached America, that was the edge of everything.
00:26:00
Speaker
When they reached the East Coast, that was, there was no further that they could go.
00:26:04
Speaker
There was going to be land for a little while, but that was the edge of the world.
00:26:07
Speaker
Imagine if people still felt that way.
00:26:10
Speaker
Oh, wait.
00:26:10
Speaker
Imagine.
00:26:11
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:13
Speaker
You know, the flat earthers, they did say there was a statement.
00:26:16
Speaker
They did say they have members all around the globe.
00:26:19
Speaker
That was their own words.
00:26:20
Speaker
They said this.
00:26:21
Speaker
They actually meant the disc shaped globe, Dennis.
00:26:24
Speaker
Yeah, the disc.
00:26:26
Speaker
Oh, God.
00:26:27
Speaker
So much yeast.
00:26:27
Speaker
We've got a lot to talk about.
00:26:30
Speaker
All right.
00:26:31
Speaker
So Le Fendement.
00:26:32
Speaker
This is a Belgian style triple sort of.
00:26:37
Speaker
I mean, they call it a triple.
00:26:39
Speaker
But it's not really a traditional triple.
00:26:42
Speaker
It's the New World spin on a Belgian triple.
00:26:47
Speaker
Essentially, it's brewed with orange and coriander.
00:26:52
Speaker
Compared to Belgian triples, this has more orange and coriander and a little bit less hops.
00:26:58
Speaker
Um, clocks in at 9%.
00:26:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:27:01
Speaker
9% ABV.
00:27:02
Speaker
Um, so it's a little bit hot.
00:27:04
Speaker
Got that beautiful Belgian color.
00:27:08
Speaker
Like just, I mean, it looks more red on camera to me, but it's like bright yellow, you know, that cloudy, bright yellow that never stops bubbling.
00:27:17
Speaker
kind of belgian style um and lastly this is the most awarded beer in canada history no beer in canada has won as many awards as this single beer uh which is incredible like it's in it's in the hundreds 150 or something like that it's uh it's it's amazing and it's amazing when you talk to people about it the the level of excitement that they have the passion the sort of like yeah man i remember i was drinking this thing you know years ago and and
00:27:47
Speaker
It's tied to so many great stories and so many great memories for a lot of people that I've encountered over the years.
00:27:52
Speaker
It's a great beer, man.
00:27:54
Speaker
I think their story, the culture, the location is really cool.
00:27:58
Speaker
It's an awesome thing.
00:28:00
Speaker
Belgian influence is awesome.
00:28:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:03
Speaker
You know, I love a good Belgian beer, but this is like a nice twist that to me is a little less aggressive than some Belgian beers.
00:28:12
Speaker
It's still very intense beer, but not as aggressive and intense as some of the Belgian stuff.
00:28:20
Speaker
It's Belgian for starters, I think.
00:28:22
Speaker
Yeah, it is more complex.
00:28:25
Speaker
That's a good distinction.
00:28:26
Speaker
And I think also a lot of people are used to, at least in the U.S., we're so used to just cracking a beer and sitting there and drinking the beer.
00:28:33
Speaker
And that's it, right?
00:28:35
Speaker
Overseas and in most places outside of the U.S., beer is accompanied by usually by food.
00:28:41
Speaker
So in Belgium, especially a lot of those beers that normally would say, man, this is a lot of flavor.
00:28:46
Speaker
It's a lot of yeastiness, a lot of stuff going on.
00:28:50
Speaker
or too effervescent, that's generally meant to be paired with some kind of a meal, some kind of a cheese, something to cut through the flavor and to pair together.
00:29:00
Speaker
And I think that's what makes beers like this pair well with cigars.
00:29:04
Speaker
Anyway, on to your second pairing while I enjoy a little bit of La Fin de Mo.
00:29:10
Speaker
Omelette du promotion.
00:29:13
Speaker
That's what I was thinking of.
00:29:15
Speaker
I could tell.
00:29:16
Speaker
I saw it in your eyes.
00:29:18
Speaker
You saw the eggy sparkle in my eyes.
00:29:22
Speaker
What am I even talking about?
00:29:23
Speaker
It's so lost.
00:29:24
Speaker
All right.
00:29:25
Speaker
Here we are.
00:29:26
Speaker
Second pairing.
00:29:28
Speaker
Brothers, Craft Brewery and Harrisonburg, Virginia.
00:29:32
Speaker
Very hard to say.
00:29:33
Speaker
I don't know why.
00:29:34
Speaker
Harrisonburg, Virginia is hard for me to say.
00:29:37
Speaker
It doesn't roll as well as left in Duval.
00:29:40
Speaker
I think the reason is that your brain always wants to say Harrisburg.
00:29:46
Speaker
Yes.
00:29:46
Speaker
Oh, being from that area, like Harrisonburg sounds like you're burping in the middle of a word you already know.
00:29:54
Speaker
You know what?
00:29:55
Speaker
Come to think of it.
00:29:55
Speaker
I just realized that when I looked at the bottle and saw where it was made, I was like, these fuckers, they fucked up the P in the PA.
00:30:04
Speaker
And I was like, oh, it's Virginia.
00:30:06
Speaker
Oh, that's weird.
00:30:06
Speaker
Okay.
00:30:09
Speaker
So Brothers Craft Brewery in Virginia.
00:30:12
Speaker
I love that label.
00:30:14
Speaker
It's super nice, man.
00:30:16
Speaker
It's Lil Hellion.
00:30:18
Speaker
It's 4.9% Helles lager.
00:30:21
Speaker
Love me a Helles.
00:30:22
Speaker
If you haven't guessed, these guys are brothers and they launched their brewery in 2012.
00:30:26
Speaker
What's really cool is that I didn't buy this in a store.
00:30:31
Speaker
This came to me by way of a monthly beer box, like a subscription box that my lovely wife gets for me every month.
00:30:41
Speaker
Nice.
00:30:42
Speaker
It's four different beers.
00:30:44
Speaker
It's, I think, hold on, it's four beers, 20 bottles.
00:30:48
Speaker
It's three bottles of each beer.
00:30:51
Speaker
So it's 12, right?
00:30:52
Speaker
Yeah, it's a 12 pack of beer, which is really cool.
00:30:54
Speaker
It comes with a really nice card with all the info on the breweries and the beers.
00:30:58
Speaker
Now, this one is interesting because you can't really tell.
00:31:02
Speaker
I don't think the bottom, I already poured it out, but.
00:31:06
Speaker
We talking some unfiltered action?
00:31:09
Speaker
I'm talking, I think there's a little bit of infection going on here.
00:31:13
Speaker
No, that's not what I was hoping.
00:31:15
Speaker
No, no, no.
00:31:15
Speaker
I love it.
00:31:16
Speaker
I love this.
00:31:16
Speaker
This is fantastic.
00:31:17
Speaker
So it seems that every bottle that I've tried of this beer has been funked up.
00:31:21
Speaker
And the reason why I say this, because if you don't know, those of you that don't know what a Helles Lager is, other than having a pretty fun name, Helles Lager was essentially what the Bavarians decided to make as the competitor for Pilsner's.
00:31:36
Speaker
So in Bohemia, you had your classic Czech Pilsners.
00:31:39
Speaker
Well, now we call them classic Czech Pilsners.
00:31:41
Speaker
Back then, they were just Bohemian Pilsners or Pilsners coming from Pilsen, which is a whole other story we can get into.
00:31:48
Speaker
Now, the Bavarians were like, nah, man, too many hops.
00:31:51
Speaker
It's too intense, right?
00:31:52
Speaker
There's too much going on.
00:31:54
Speaker
So they made it a lot sweeter, much bigger malt profile, more of that bread character that you kind of typically see with a lot of Bavarian beers.
00:32:03
Speaker
And...
00:32:05
Speaker
Less hops, more malt.
00:32:07
Speaker
And this one is not supposed to taste like, well, it kind of tastes sour.
00:32:12
Speaker
I'll tell you that.
00:32:13
Speaker
I really dig it because it tastes sour.
00:32:16
Speaker
It's got that real subtle funk.
00:32:18
Speaker
Like it's almost like the yeast almost didn't make it all the way.
00:32:22
Speaker
It was taken over by some kind of bacterium.
00:32:26
Speaker
Interesting.
00:32:27
Speaker
For the right person, it's exciting, right?
00:32:29
Speaker
It's like blue cheese.
00:32:30
Speaker
Some people are like, man, I'm not going to eat that.
00:32:31
Speaker
It's moldy.
00:32:34
Speaker
I mean, that's exactly how sour beer is, right?
00:32:37
Speaker
Like when you get an infected beer, a lot of times it's not bad.
00:32:42
Speaker
It's just different.
00:32:43
Speaker
It is different.
00:32:44
Speaker
But it would be kind of like if you open your Swiss cheese and then it tasted like blue cheese, right?
00:32:50
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:32:51
Speaker
Exactly.
00:32:51
Speaker
That's the experience you're getting here.
00:32:54
Speaker
Listen, it's still a good beer.
00:32:54
Speaker
And when I say infected, I should have said sour rather than...
00:33:00
Speaker
Not the bad infection.
00:33:03
Speaker
Yeah, infected is a beer word for bacteria got in there.
00:33:09
Speaker
But even that sounds bad.
00:33:11
Speaker
So that's why we call them sour beers and not bacteria infected beers.
00:33:15
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, nobody wants to drink a bacteria infected beer.
00:33:18
Speaker
But the distinction now, if it was truly infected with something that made it go bad,
00:33:26
Speaker
This wouldn't have somewhat, I mean, it has some head retention.
00:33:29
Speaker
It's fine.
00:33:29
Speaker
But it would have exploded.
00:33:31
Speaker
Yes.
00:33:32
Speaker
It would have foamed up.
00:33:33
Speaker
I would have had barely any actual liquid.
00:33:35
Speaker
I'm glad it didn't because my laptop doesn't need to die yet.
00:33:38
Speaker
Yeah.
00:33:39
Speaker
Things like botulism tend to foam a lot more.
00:33:42
Speaker
I haven't experienced it myself just yet, but I'm hoping it never happens.
00:33:46
Speaker
I haven't either, and I'm hoping not to.
00:33:48
Speaker
But they do foam.
00:33:49
Speaker
So yeah, this is really interesting because typically Helles lagers, like I said, are less hoppy.
00:33:55
Speaker
They're so much less hoppy generally that you almost don't notice the hop quality because the malt kind of takes over.
00:34:02
Speaker
In this case, because it's so soured, all I taste is hops and sour, which is pretty cool.
00:34:09
Speaker
Not the intention, I get it, but it's kind of cool and I think it's working really well with the cigar.
00:34:15
Speaker
All right.
00:34:16
Speaker
In a weird way.
00:34:17
Speaker
Interesting.
00:34:20
Speaker
I don't even know what to say now.
00:34:22
Speaker
I'm just going to move on.
00:34:24
Speaker
Le Fendoumont is... I mean, if you didn't get it from the way we were waxing poetic about it before, it's an amazing beer.
00:34:32
Speaker
Just a great beer.
00:34:33
Speaker
Super

Cigar Flavor Development

00:34:34
Speaker
well-balanced.
00:34:34
Speaker
A little bit of that alcohol kick, but then you get...
00:34:38
Speaker
you get like i mean there's definitely hops and then you get that coriander on on the palate and the orange uh and it's just working really well with the cigar like it it really works nicely as a balance with the the spice and that earthiness of the cigar and we haven't talked enough about the cigar lately so before we move on to our last pairing um dennis what are your what are your thoughts on how the cigar has been going
00:35:06
Speaker
You know, I said all those nice things and I'm starting to get to a place in the cigar where it probably needs a good purge.
00:35:13
Speaker
And maybe, I don't know what it is.
00:35:16
Speaker
I mean, based on the bill that they gave us in the press release, Connecticut Broadleaf, Pennsylvania Broadleaf, and Nicaraguan Corojo 98.
00:35:29
Speaker
in the fillers, it kind of makes sense that it would be kind of rough on the palate, right?
00:35:33
Speaker
Like that's kind of a spice and earth bomb making fill of material.
00:35:39
Speaker
Yeah, there's a... What do we call that?
00:35:42
Speaker
That's brimstone mixed with gunpowder.
00:35:47
Speaker
You're getting that again?
00:35:48
Speaker
Because I'm not getting that from this at all.
00:35:51
Speaker
Yeah, it's weird.
00:35:53
Speaker
I don't know why all of a sudden that I... Maybe I was smoking a little too fast.
00:35:59
Speaker
Could be.
00:35:59
Speaker
Could be.
00:36:01
Speaker
Rob Goodhart wants to know if you got your office situation resolved.
00:36:05
Speaker
Well, either I got it somewhat resolved or it's going to resolve me shortly.
00:36:10
Speaker
And if that happens, I already gave Tripp the kind of DNR notice in the beginning of the show in the green room.
00:36:16
Speaker
I said, dude,
00:36:18
Speaker
Cut the live feed.
00:36:19
Speaker
Keep rolling.
00:36:20
Speaker
All right, we're going to make secondary income off this thing, right?
00:36:24
Speaker
$9.99.
00:36:24
Speaker
You get to see me pass out of my office.
00:36:27
Speaker
Exactly.
00:36:27
Speaker
Put it on the only parents.
00:36:30
Speaker
$6.66, actually.
00:36:31
Speaker
Sorry.
00:36:32
Speaker
Perfect.
00:36:35
Speaker
Perfect.
00:36:36
Speaker
Man, this is a great beer.
00:36:36
Speaker
And it's going really, really well with this cigar.
00:36:40
Speaker
I feel like if I was...
00:36:44
Speaker
Going back and doing this again, I think like a amber or a porter would work really well with this cigar.
00:36:51
Speaker
Something that's like got that roastiness, but it's not overly intense like a stout.
00:36:56
Speaker
Speaking of overly intense, I may have made the wrong decision here because again, I don't want to do this one blind.
00:37:01
Speaker
um i have a scotch here oh all right so this is a signatory bottling from bunahavan um signatory for anybody who's not familiar is one of the independent bottlers that john and i talked about a couple weeks ago um this is a company that just they just buy barrels from the distilleries and stick it in a bottle um
00:37:27
Speaker
and just see how it comes out.
00:37:29
Speaker
Actually, this one is a little bit different because one of the things that Buna Haben is famous for is not peating pretty much any of their whiskey.
00:37:41
Speaker
This is... It says it somewhere on here.
00:37:45
Speaker
I'll see if it'll show up.
00:37:46
Speaker
It says Stoysha.
00:37:48
Speaker
I don't know what Stoysha means.
00:37:52
Speaker
Russian.
00:37:53
Speaker
Is it Russian?
00:37:55
Speaker
You gotta spell it for me.
00:37:57
Speaker
Where is that word?
00:37:57
Speaker
Stoisha.
00:37:58
Speaker
S-T-A-O-I-S-H-A.
00:38:02
Speaker
Where is that?
00:38:03
Speaker
Oh, Stoisha.
00:38:04
Speaker
Oh, I don't know.
00:38:06
Speaker
It sounds Russian, but I'm assuming it's Gaelic.
00:38:09
Speaker
Stoisha is like something that stood.
00:38:15
Speaker
Something that was stood upon.
00:38:17
Speaker
Now you're questioning my literary acumen here now.
00:38:23
Speaker
I mean, I don't even know if it's, uh, if it's any, in any way related to Russian.
00:38:29
Speaker
Um, I couldn't find much on it, but Doisha is what they call their heavily peated whiskeys.
00:38:37
Speaker
Um, almost all of them are, uh, independent bottlings or store bottlings or something like that.
00:38:45
Speaker
Um,
00:38:45
Speaker
In this case, this is, again, Buna Haban.
00:38:49
Speaker
I've talked about them a lot.
00:38:50
Speaker
They were founded in 1881 on Isla.
00:38:53
Speaker
They don't usually make peated whiskeys.
00:38:55
Speaker
They were in a very remote location, and they still use spring water.
00:39:00
Speaker
That's the short version.
00:39:02
Speaker
This one, and the other really cool thing about independent bottling in this case is that it says it was aged eight years.
00:39:12
Speaker
It tells you the date it was distilled, the date it was bottled,
00:39:15
Speaker
And it was matured in a de-chard and re-chard hogshead cask, which de-chard, re-chard is where they scrape out the inside of the barrel and then re-burn it to kind of give it that toasted character a little bit more than a reused barrel.
00:39:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:39:40
Speaker
This was cask number 900280 from Bunahabin, and this is bottle number 249.
00:39:50
Speaker
Very cool that you get all that info.
00:39:52
Speaker
I mean, you better for the price.
00:39:54
Speaker
This is, oh, it wasn't crazy, but I think it was like $110 or so.
00:39:57
Speaker
It's not terrible.
00:40:01
Speaker
Not terrible, but it's a lot for a glass of whiskey,

Scotch Review and Pairing

00:40:03
Speaker
right?
00:40:03
Speaker
Or a bottle of whiskey, right?
00:40:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:40:07
Speaker
So I'm going to take a couple sips of this.
00:40:09
Speaker
It is also, I should mention, non-chill filtered, non-colored, and bottled specifically for ABC liquor stores, which is where I got this.
00:40:21
Speaker
So if you're interested, your local ABC store still may have some of these, but a run of something like this doesn't last forever.
00:40:30
Speaker
They're usually a couple hundred, maybe a couple thousand bottles at the most.
00:40:35
Speaker
What do you got for your last pairing while I take a couple sips of this?
00:40:38
Speaker
Speaking of the 90s, I appreciate it.
00:40:40
Speaker
Also, by the way, actually, I just looked up the word Stoisha, right?
00:40:45
Speaker
It seems completely unique to them.
00:40:49
Speaker
It's probably just a word they made up.
00:40:51
Speaker
It's a word that they made up.
00:40:53
Speaker
There's some sort of Gaelic influence here and there, but it's not clear exactly what the origin is.
00:40:59
Speaker
Thankfully, my Soviet card is not going to get pulled tonight.
00:41:02
Speaker
But...
00:41:04
Speaker
But it's an interesting word, nonetheless.
00:41:07
Speaker
I mean, it struck me as immediately Russian-like.
00:41:12
Speaker
You know, there's some words that sound very similar in a couple of different languages.
00:41:16
Speaker
Definitely Russian being one of them.
00:41:18
Speaker
All right.
00:41:20
Speaker
Oh, wow.
00:41:20
Speaker
This is interesting.
00:41:22
Speaker
I haven't had this in a really long time.
00:41:24
Speaker
Go back to 1994.
00:41:25
Speaker
You're talking about mid-'90s.
00:41:28
Speaker
Have you ever had anything from Shipyard?
00:41:32
Speaker
I don't believe so.
00:41:33
Speaker
All right.
00:41:34
Speaker
Fantastic.
00:41:35
Speaker
So Shipyard Brewing Company was founded in 1994, as I mentioned, in Portland, Maine.
00:41:41
Speaker
And they are still one of the largest craft breweries in the U.S. It's pretty cool.
00:41:45
Speaker
So they're founded by Fred Forsley and the master brewer, Alan Pugsley.
00:41:51
Speaker
And they basically took English brewing techniques and
00:41:54
Speaker
And they popularized old classic English brewing techniques by bringing over beers that this one obviously is there.
00:42:01
Speaker
They call us the flagship like export ale.
00:42:04
Speaker
It's really just a kind of a golden ale.
00:42:07
Speaker
But this is if you remember in your early college days of going out to bars and drinking, you say like, I'll give me a I'll take an ale, whatever ale you got.
00:42:14
Speaker
Right.
00:42:14
Speaker
You would get a beer.
00:42:16
Speaker
from whatever brewery, it didn't matter, generally had a very similar profile to it.
00:42:20
Speaker
You had Irish Reds that all had a very similar profile and certain kind of malt character to it, right?
00:42:26
Speaker
Slightly hoppy, but mostly malty.
00:42:29
Speaker
This is what we saw with, oh, what's the name?
00:42:35
Speaker
I'm blanking on the name now.
00:42:37
Speaker
I don't know.
00:42:38
Speaker
Boston Lager.
00:42:40
Speaker
Oh, Sam Adams.
00:42:42
Speaker
Yeah, but Sam Adams is a Boston Beer Company.
00:42:45
Speaker
That's what it is.
00:42:45
Speaker
Thank you.
00:42:47
Speaker
Boston Beer Company, similar to those early beers in the late 90s, early 2000s, kind of had that vibe.
00:42:56
Speaker
So they really stick to mostly English-style brews.
00:43:00
Speaker
They're really famous for their Pumpkinhead Ale, which you've probably seen in stores.
00:43:03
Speaker
Definitely.
00:43:05
Speaker
Which is, you know, not bad, man.
00:43:09
Speaker
I generally don't gravitate to our pumpkin stuff, but they do a pretty good job.
00:43:15
Speaker
And they are a massive, massive brewery.
00:43:18
Speaker
They're doing, I'll tell you, just over 100,000 barrels a year.
00:43:24
Speaker
That's a big brewery.
00:43:25
Speaker
Which is a fucking lot of beer, man.
00:43:28
Speaker
And this is again, this is why it makes them one of the largest craft breweries still in production.
00:43:33
Speaker
Not owned by anybody else.
00:43:34
Speaker
They are still themselves.
00:43:36
Speaker
They're not in partnership as far as I know.
00:43:38
Speaker
You'll love to see it.
00:43:41
Speaker
What's that?
00:43:41
Speaker
You'll love to see it.
00:43:44
Speaker
Oh, yes.
00:43:44
Speaker
The company is still being independent.
00:43:47
Speaker
I thought you said, dude, just yell.
00:43:49
Speaker
Dude, just yell.
00:43:50
Speaker
Dude, just yell.
00:43:52
Speaker
No, no.
00:43:53
Speaker
Dude, just yell.
00:43:53
Speaker
Yeah, it's another beer.
00:43:54
Speaker
Dude, just yell.
00:43:55
Speaker
Are you familiar with that beer?
00:43:57
Speaker
No, not familiar with the beer.
00:43:58
Speaker
I was just telling you to yell.
00:44:00
Speaker
No, no, that's a beer.
00:44:01
Speaker
Do this yell?
00:44:03
Speaker
I never thought about it that way.
00:44:05
Speaker
Anyway, this really interesting...
00:44:09
Speaker
kind of hoppy take on English beers, which generally are more on the malt side.
00:44:13
Speaker
Again, this is another story of typically what you see is more malt, more bread, toffee, darker beers.
00:44:19
Speaker
This is certainly kind of light for an English beer, but it could be a Cremale.
00:44:23
Speaker
But then again, you have the hops, which makes it very classically American.
00:44:26
Speaker
We talk about American Pils, American Pale Ales, American Cremales.
00:44:31
Speaker
They all have this kind of vibe to them that are...
00:44:35
Speaker
Even Pilsners, especially Pilsners, I should say, in the U.S. are very hoppy.
00:44:40
Speaker
Yeah, we like our hops.
00:44:42
Speaker
We love our hops, and that's fine.
00:44:44
Speaker
That's great.
00:44:45
Speaker
But nonetheless, it's always nice to see classic techniques or older techniques that were not typically used in the U.S. for a long time being kind of still popular.
00:44:58
Speaker
Yeah, definitely.
00:45:01
Speaker
Now, I don't think it's going to work well with the cigar, though.
00:45:03
Speaker
Oh, really?
00:45:04
Speaker
It goes that way sometimes.
00:45:05
Speaker
That's how I felt about this Buna Haban, which I forgot to mention is...
00:45:11
Speaker
putt down to 46% ABV.
00:45:13
Speaker
This is not the only downside of this bottle, I think, with all the information they give you and everything, is that it's not cask strength, but at least it's 46%, you know, a little bit elevated to kind of bump that flavor up.
00:45:28
Speaker
But, you know, I would rather a cask strength version of this.
00:45:32
Speaker
Against what I thought was going to happen when I took a sip of that, like, it's got this
00:45:39
Speaker
Not super intense, not Ardbeg or Laphroaig level smokiness, but it is like... I guess it would compare to a Lagavulin in the level of smokiness.
00:45:53
Speaker
And then also with that kind of candy sweetness.
00:45:56
Speaker
But then it has a very different character to something like a Lagavulin, where it's kind of got that...
00:46:03
Speaker
that apple kind of, uh, bite to it a little bit.
00:46:08
Speaker
Um, I know exactly what you mean.
00:46:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:46:10
Speaker
It's like a really pleasant mix of a bunch of different whiskeys, um, in just the right ratios.
00:46:16
Speaker
It's got enough smokiness that if you hate Pete, you will hate the cigar or hate this whiskey.
00:46:24
Speaker
Um, but if you love Pete, like me, there's enough Pete to keep you interested.
00:46:29
Speaker
Um,
00:46:31
Speaker
But it's not overpowering like it is with some.
00:46:33
Speaker
It's not, I mean, I don't want to go back over what I said, but it's not super intense.
00:46:39
Speaker
And it's just working really well with that like spicy, sort of woody, but mostly kind of chocolate and earth of the cigar at this point.
00:46:50
Speaker
Is your cigar waking up at all for you?
00:46:55
Speaker
Is it waking up?
00:46:57
Speaker
I may have killed it.
00:46:58
Speaker
I don't know.
00:46:58
Speaker
I think I think it will never wake up again.
00:47:01
Speaker
It's just fine.
00:47:05
Speaker
I say that callously.
00:47:07
Speaker
Sorry.
00:47:08
Speaker
I think it's gotten a little bit better.
00:47:11
Speaker
It's got a little better for me, but I suspect that I did a bit of damage smoking it too fast.
00:47:16
Speaker
I think I might be smoking faster than you.
00:47:19
Speaker
Oh, wow.
00:47:19
Speaker
Look at that.
00:47:21
Speaker
I like a banana.
00:47:22
Speaker
You know, when we do this on the show next time, we both need a banana for scale, right?
00:47:27
Speaker
It's true.
00:47:28
Speaker
Colors may appear differently on people's monitors differently, especially if you're watching and you're listening.
00:47:33
Speaker
You have no idea what size banana we're holding right now.
00:47:35
Speaker
Yeah.
00:47:36
Speaker
I'm about in the last third.
00:47:38
Speaker
He's about to hit the last third.
00:47:39
Speaker
Like half an inch, quarter inch off.
00:47:42
Speaker
Quarter, yeah, about quarter.
00:47:44
Speaker
How many is that millimeters, huh?
00:47:46
Speaker
Seven.
00:47:47
Speaker
That was a guess.
00:47:48
Speaker
I have no idea.
00:47:48
Speaker
I don't know.
00:47:49
Speaker
I don't know.
00:47:51
Speaker
Rob Goodhart says, thanks for reminding me.
00:47:52
Speaker
I got a bottle of Ardbeganola kicking around here somewhere.
00:47:55
Speaker
I know.
00:47:55
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:47:56
Speaker
Great whiskey.
00:47:58
Speaker
I just finished a bottle, but I don't anymore.
00:48:01
Speaker
Yeah, we just finished about.
00:48:02
Speaker
It was fantastic.
00:48:04
Speaker
Great stuff.
00:48:05
Speaker
But again, peat is one of those things that's really cool.
00:48:07
Speaker
You don't need a whole lot of peat to satisfy people that like a little bit of peat or people that love a lot of peat still enjoy lighter peated whiskeys.
00:48:18
Speaker
There are ways to enjoy it.
00:48:19
Speaker
And that's, you know, we talk about sometimes you add a little bit of water.
00:48:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:23
Speaker
Sometimes you add a little distilled water.
00:48:24
Speaker
Sometimes you add a little mineral water.
00:48:26
Speaker
It depends on kind of what mood you're in.
00:48:29
Speaker
But you can get a really great nuance pop of flavor from the peat.
00:48:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:48:35
Speaker
I also get like a baking spice from this whiskey, which is really interesting.
00:48:43
Speaker
Rob, LaFroigue 10 is your jam?
00:48:45
Speaker
Me too, man.
00:48:46
Speaker
That's my, I mean, it's like cigars.
00:48:50
Speaker
I don't have a go-to because there are so many that I enjoy immensely, but LaFroigue 10 is like in my
00:48:57
Speaker
top three of go-to whiskeys.
00:48:59
Speaker
It probably actually is my go-to.
00:49:02
Speaker
Which one?
00:49:03
Speaker
Laphroaig 10.
00:49:06
Speaker
Or like you were about to say, Quarter Cask.
00:49:09
Speaker
Quarter Cask is good.
00:49:10
Speaker
No.
00:49:11
Speaker
Triple Wood.
00:49:11
Speaker
That was my favorite one so far.
00:49:13
Speaker
Yeah.
00:49:14
Speaker
You know what I learned about those?
00:49:16
Speaker
Quarter cask is Lafroig 10 with an additional finish.
00:49:21
Speaker
Triplewood is quarter cask with an additional finish.
00:49:25
Speaker
Like, they're basically, at one point, all three of those are the same whiskey.
00:49:29
Speaker
Yes.
00:49:30
Speaker
And then they just keep evolving to become what they are, which is all, I mean, they're all fantastic.
00:49:37
Speaker
Yeah.
00:49:37
Speaker
I haven't had a, I don't want to say I haven't had a bad one.
00:49:40
Speaker
I didn't care for, uh,
00:49:42
Speaker
Select, I think it was.
00:49:44
Speaker
Yeah, Select is not my jam.
00:49:47
Speaker
Too sweet.
00:49:50
Speaker
How's that English mail thing?
00:49:57
Speaker
I think it's... We're going to have to call this one No-Go.
00:50:02
Speaker
Oh?
00:50:03
Speaker
For what reason?
00:50:05
Speaker
So I think it's over hot, man.
00:50:07
Speaker
Oh, really?
00:50:09
Speaker
I've had this beer.
00:50:09
Speaker
Full disclosure, I've had this beer before.
00:50:11
Speaker
I'm familiar with it.
00:50:12
Speaker
I know it really well.
00:50:13
Speaker
I've never had it with a cigar.
00:50:15
Speaker
I mean, that's the thing about pairing with a cigar.
00:50:17
Speaker
It can completely change the drink.
00:50:21
Speaker
So I think if it was a... I'm trying to think of a beer that would fit... An English beer that would better fit... I mean, even Boddington's, I think, would fit better with this cigar.
00:50:33
Speaker
I could see Boddington's.
00:50:34
Speaker
Which is interestingly enough made by AB InBev, in case you're wondering.
00:50:38
Speaker
Oh, is it?
00:50:39
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:50:39
Speaker
I remember seeing that on there.
00:50:41
Speaker
They have, like, you can find this big, like, kind of flow chart of AB InBev, every, like, subtype of beer, and who they own in that space.
00:50:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:50:56
Speaker
It's the Umbrella Corp map for beer.
00:50:58
Speaker
Yeah.
00:51:00
Speaker
Exactly.
00:51:02
Speaker
That's how I feel about them.
00:51:04
Speaker
Yeah, I'm not a big fan.
00:51:05
Speaker
I mean, we've talked about it over and over again, but I hate what they do to small beer companies.
00:51:14
Speaker
But I don't mind if they buy a company and suck all their blood out while they continue to make the same beer.
00:51:20
Speaker
If that's what they want to do, fine.
00:51:23
Speaker
But don't pimp their beer out until they have to shut down because you expanded them to 100 times what they were ready to do.
00:51:33
Speaker
And now there's not enough customers to buy all that.
00:51:36
Speaker
Right.
00:51:36
Speaker
Absolutely.
00:51:37
Speaker
And I think we had this conversation a couple of shows ago.
00:51:40
Speaker
Where we compared somebody like Diageo, who's on the spirits side, and then AB InBev on the beer side, and the difference of the market, the market profiles are different, the consumer base is different, just enough where the product that you're selling is approached in a different way.
00:51:58
Speaker
So maybe that's why we see them not really working as well like Diageo does with spirits.
00:52:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:52:04
Speaker
Maybe it's a business thing, and I don't know enough about it to speak about it, but just my opinion.
00:52:10
Speaker
No, but that does make sense.
00:52:14
Speaker
So you're not loving this cigar, huh?
00:52:17
Speaker
I'm not disliking it.
00:52:19
Speaker
And Ryan, in full disclosure, I think when you talk about beers especially, but really any pairing, if the pairing is not working and it coats the palate, you're kind of really... It makes both things worse, yeah.
00:52:30
Speaker
it makes both things worse.
00:52:32
Speaker
And sometimes you can't go back from that.
00:52:33
Speaker
If you've had like a weird, if you drink a weird whiskey or you drink a weird wine or something like that, and you go back to your cigar, it just changes the flavor because it's sitting on your palate.
00:52:43
Speaker
So, but I do have me.
00:52:49
Speaker
The old alternate pairing.
00:52:51
Speaker
A little bit of liquid death.
00:52:52
Speaker
I'm going to see how to put some seltzer down my gullet and see if, uh,
00:52:56
Speaker
If that cleanses, murders, if you will, if it murders that flavor.
00:53:01
Speaker
I mean, maybe they can advertise it as not just murdering thirst, but also murdering off flavor.
00:53:08
Speaker
I could Vanna White this shit all day, man.
00:53:11
Speaker
I'm like, I got cases upon cases.
00:53:13
Speaker
I can do a whole backdrop.
00:53:15
Speaker
There you go.
00:53:18
Speaker
Reach out to the media team.
00:53:20
Speaker
So I have been bombarding.
00:53:21
Speaker
I'm actually half expecting an email from Liquid Death because I get emails saying like, hey, can you review this product?
00:53:27
Speaker
You get some points, whatever, right?
00:53:28
Speaker
So you can redeem for shit.
00:53:30
Speaker
So every review that I've been doing has been an entire song, lyrics for an entire song in a different style of a band, but themed to Liquid Death.
00:53:40
Speaker
So I think I did.
00:53:41
Speaker
You have to send me some of these.
00:53:42
Speaker
That sounds amazing.
00:53:44
Speaker
I just keep saying, I'm like, hey, guys, if you ever want to just make this song, by all means, it's themed for your shit in the style of whoever, different kinds of metal bands.
00:53:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:53:56
Speaker
And I'm hoping they just reach out to me one day.
00:53:58
Speaker
And then we can get the sponsorship deal.
00:54:01
Speaker
Rob is saying, how are they not already sponsoring it?
00:54:03
Speaker
I don't know.
00:54:04
Speaker
I don't know.
00:54:05
Speaker
Worst case, maybe we'll make the music.
00:54:06
Speaker
You and I, you've been playing guitar.
00:54:08
Speaker
You're back at the game, right?
00:54:10
Speaker
Yeah, we can do that.
00:54:12
Speaker
I'll come up with some riffs.
00:54:14
Speaker
All right, I think I'm ready for my pairing of the night because I've gone back through while we were talking here.
00:54:19
Speaker
I'm nervously curious.
00:54:21
Speaker
I'm curiously nervous, if you will.
00:54:23
Speaker
I think you know what it's going to be.
00:54:25
Speaker
But fin du mal.
00:54:27
Speaker
This beer just goes so well with this cigar.
00:54:30
Speaker
It has that palate cleansing effect with those tiny, tiny Belgian bubbles.
00:54:36
Speaker
The little Belgian.
00:54:37
Speaker
Those tiny Belgian bubbles imported from Belgium.
00:54:42
Speaker
It's just like... I mean, you can't see it on camera, but it's still bubbling.
00:54:47
Speaker
Like... And I'm still burping, too.
00:54:51
Speaker
Somewhere in the world, Jean-Michel's whiskers just curled.
00:54:55
Speaker
Peter Janettatos.
00:54:57
Speaker
Sorry, I don't know how to pronounce your name.
00:55:00
Speaker
I know you've been watching for years.
00:55:02
Speaker
He says, what is this cigar?
00:55:03
Speaker
This cigar that we're smoking tonight is Los Statos Deluxe from a forged cigar company, a collaboration between Matt Booth
00:55:14
Speaker
and uh justin andrews from diesel um we like this cigar we're not highly impressed with it and it's not blowing our socks off um but i think it's a good solid cigar so far um we'll get back to that we'll talk about our thoughts on the cigar in a little bit um do you have a pairing of the night you had some all over the place pairings tonight or is it liquid death no i don't know well
00:55:42
Speaker
To be fair, I had the, all the beers were basically around the same more or less kind of profile.
00:55:47
Speaker
Yeah.
00:55:49
Speaker
All right.
00:55:50
Speaker
Street cart.
00:55:51
Speaker
Definitely street cart.
00:55:52
Speaker
Yeah.
00:55:53
Speaker
I think the sweetness cuts through some of the acrid flavors that I was getting from the cigar, even post purge.
00:55:59
Speaker
And I can't tell again if that was me, you know, the way that I was smoking or if it were, if it was the other pairings that I bought that kind of ruined the flavor profile.
00:56:07
Speaker
But yeah, definitely.
00:56:09
Speaker
street cart with that snazzy label and that dude making some good food over there.
00:56:14
Speaker
Very nice.
00:56:16
Speaker
Some elote going on.
00:56:18
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, that's some good artwork for sure.
00:56:22
Speaker
Yeah, it really is.
00:56:24
Speaker
Look at the paint and the butter onto that corn.
00:56:27
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:29
Speaker
So, definitely a cool series.
00:56:30
Speaker
If you haven't seen the kind of the mango cart spinoff series that Golden Road has been doing, check about
00:56:37
Speaker
I'm going to have to look for those because I feel like places like Walmart and stuff would have them around me because I haven't noticed Mango Cart on the shelf.
00:56:47
Speaker
I just tend to see it on tap a lot.
00:56:49
Speaker
Wait, at a Walmart?
00:56:51
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:52
Speaker
You buy beer at Walmart?
00:56:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:56:55
Speaker
What?
00:56:56
Speaker
You can't buy beer at Walmart?
00:56:58
Speaker
No.
00:56:59
Speaker
Well, all the Walmarts around here are super centers.
00:57:04
Speaker
So, like, it's either a super center or it's the whatever they call the grocery store one.
00:57:09
Speaker
Oh, I see.
00:57:10
Speaker
Okay.
00:57:10
Speaker
They always have, like, 80% grocery.
00:57:14
Speaker
Pretty much anything in grocery you can think about.

Beer Buying Challenges in New Jersey

00:57:21
Speaker
I miss this feeling I went to visit my family A couple weeks ago right in New York City And I stopped the car The car's full of my wife Kids It's been a long drive I stopped at a 7-Eleven I need to go get beer I want to feel it again I want to buy beer at a 7-Eleven Wait so I haven't spent a whole lot of time in Jersey Where can you buy beer in Jersey?
00:57:44
Speaker
Liquor store Only at liquor stores for beer?
00:57:47
Speaker
Yeah
00:57:48
Speaker
Oh, my God.
00:57:49
Speaker
I thought Connecticut was bad, man.
00:57:52
Speaker
I grew up in Connecticut where you could not buy beer between 8 p.m.
00:57:57
Speaker
and noon or on Sundays.
00:58:01
Speaker
But at least they sold it in the grocery store.
00:58:04
Speaker
Yeah, I remember you telling me you had to go over the border.
00:58:06
Speaker
You had to go over the border to get your beers as a youngster.
00:58:08
Speaker
Yeah, we would go west of the border and drive to Brewster, New York.
00:58:13
Speaker
A lot of time to be alive, man.
00:58:14
Speaker
To buy beers at a 7-Eleven.
00:58:16
Speaker
Nobody will appreciate that, like the pain of like holding your skateboard at two o'clock in the morning, smoking your pack of Marv Reds, trying to get a beer over the border and make it home in time where nobody will notice you're gone.
00:58:30
Speaker
Exactly.
00:58:32
Speaker
Rob Goodhart asked, is it on the strength from the diesel perspective?
00:58:39
Speaker
What do you think?
00:58:39
Speaker
That's a good question.
00:58:41
Speaker
Yeah.
00:58:42
Speaker
You think so?
00:58:44
Speaker
I, uh,
00:58:45
Speaker
It's a little bit lighter than typical profile, what you would expect, but it's in that vein.
00:58:50
Speaker
I think I can notice some of those similar.
00:58:52
Speaker
Yeah, I would call this medium strength when I think diesel is usually medium full or full or full plus sometimes.
00:59:02
Speaker
Sometimes, yeah.
00:59:03
Speaker
But this is full flavor.
00:59:04
Speaker
It's got a lot of flavor to it.
00:59:06
Speaker
So it's not quite on par with the strength of some of the diesel stuff.
00:59:11
Speaker
But, you know, that depends what diesel stuff you're talking about.
00:59:13
Speaker
Because, like, I smoked the Pure Vintage the other day.
00:59:19
Speaker
Puro Vintage?
00:59:19
Speaker
Pure Vintage?
00:59:20
Speaker
I don't remember which one it is.
00:59:23
Speaker
Maybe it's Puro Vintage.
00:59:24
Speaker
I think it's Puro Vintage.
00:59:26
Speaker
But that one was, like, not diesel strong at all.
00:59:29
Speaker
Not even close.
00:59:30
Speaker
It was a good cigar, but not diesel strong.
00:59:32
Speaker
Man, I love this beer.
00:59:33
Speaker
And you could really trick me.
00:59:35
Speaker
I just noticed on the can.
00:59:38
Speaker
First of all, props for having... You can't even read it on camera.
00:59:44
Speaker
The Cervat temperatures.
00:59:45
Speaker
You'll love that.
00:59:46
Speaker
Yes, very nice.
00:59:47
Speaker
Very nice touch.
00:59:51
Speaker
Oh, can re-fermented.
00:59:53
Speaker
That's interesting to see on the can.
00:59:55
Speaker
So they ferment in the cans here.
00:59:58
Speaker
But IBUs, 19.
01:00:01
Speaker
I would guess that this was a lot higher than 19, like in the 40s.
01:00:06
Speaker
It's got a noticeable hot profile, right?
01:00:09
Speaker
But maybe that's coming from, maybe some of that bitterness comes from the orange peel.
01:00:14
Speaker
Because orange peel, grapefruit peel can add a lot of bitterness to something like this.
01:00:20
Speaker
Well, it's the pith, right?
01:00:21
Speaker
It's the quality of the pith.
01:00:22
Speaker
The astringency of the pith will come out pretty readily on a beer, especially one that sits as long as that one does.
01:00:30
Speaker
Yeah.
01:00:31
Speaker
For the full yeast cycle.
01:00:33
Speaker
Man, what a great beer.
01:00:34
Speaker
If you have not had this beer,
01:00:37
Speaker
Look for it.
01:00:39
Speaker
I can almost guarantee you can find it.
01:00:40
Speaker
I found this at a random liquor store in their cooler.
01:00:44
Speaker
In Oregon, I could buy this in a grocery store.
01:00:51
Speaker
But any liquor store with a big beer selection, especially if they have a little bit of European beer, will have this.
01:00:58
Speaker
It's fantastic.
01:01:01
Speaker
It's a world-class beer.
01:01:03
Speaker
And I'm a big fan.
01:01:06
Speaker
All right.
01:01:07
Speaker
I guess that brings us kind of to the end of the show.
01:01:10
Speaker
Anything else to add, Dennis, before we get to one for the road?
01:01:14
Speaker
Other than that beer is fantastic.
01:01:15
Speaker
No, it really is.
01:01:16
Speaker
Right.
01:01:17
Speaker
Just so good.
01:01:18
Speaker
I just I love that it's available in cans now.
01:01:20
Speaker
Cans ship better there.
01:01:24
Speaker
I mean, I guess they're better for the environment, but, you know, that's not at the top of my mind most of the time.
01:01:29
Speaker
it's got that matte finish on it too which just feels yeah it has the matte finish which is nice uh but the reason i love cans is they're way more portable i can bring a can with me i don't have to like be careful when i'm throwing it into the recycling bin uh but most importantly they keep beer fresher than bottles like you don't end up with as much uh
01:01:51
Speaker
I don't want to say skunk because I don't even know if a beer like this would skunk.
01:01:56
Speaker
No, probably not.
01:01:58
Speaker
Your beer tastes fresh for longer.
01:02:02
Speaker
And this tastes fresh as fuck.
01:02:07
Speaker
All right.
01:02:09
Speaker
My last statement is going to be I'm going to make a clone.
01:02:11
Speaker
I'm going to call it fresh as fuck.
01:02:14
Speaker
That's going to be a beer.
01:02:17
Speaker
I feel like that's probably been a beer before.

Music Recommendation and Sign-Off

01:02:19
Speaker
Probably an IPA.
01:02:20
Speaker
Ah, La Fin as fuck.
01:02:23
Speaker
There we go.
01:02:24
Speaker
Love it.
01:02:24
Speaker
Love it.
01:02:25
Speaker
All right.
01:02:26
Speaker
What is your one for the road where we talk about some kind of media we've consumed within the last week or two?
01:02:34
Speaker
So I just have been anticipating, now that we're getting into the summer, I've been really excited.
01:02:38
Speaker
I've been following this guy in the UK that produces music, and specifically he makes music that is...
01:02:46
Speaker
You remember the 80s movies, cop thrillers, the Miami cop smoking a cigarette?
01:02:50
Speaker
Oh, of course.
01:02:51
Speaker
Right, like that sound?
01:02:53
Speaker
Oh, oh.
01:02:54
Speaker
He makes that kind of music.
01:02:57
Speaker
He makes that kind of music, and he's got an album that he's been working on for the last year.
01:03:00
Speaker
It's coming out at some point this summer, and he's been kind of releasing little teasers of it.
01:03:06
Speaker
That's awesome.
01:03:07
Speaker
This guy calls himself Sunglasses Kid.
01:03:11
Speaker
And on Instagram, I think it's, let me, actually, I'll tell you exactly what it is.
01:03:15
Speaker
It's Sunglasses Kid Music on Instagram.
01:03:22
Speaker
And, man, so he puts a little blurb about what the song, each different song that he posts is.
01:03:27
Speaker
So just to give you an idea, POV, it's 1988, and you're getting paid for a massive shootout in the warehouse.
01:03:34
Speaker
For those of you that know, that grew up in that era with that kind of music, those movies, you know exactly what that sounds like.
01:03:41
Speaker
Yeah.
01:03:42
Speaker
You can imagine the guitar.
01:03:44
Speaker
There's like a whining sax somewhere in the back, but it's just kind of fading out all the time.
01:03:49
Speaker
A lot of synths.
01:03:51
Speaker
the sins, the kind of like, uh, really deep bases going on.
01:03:56
Speaker
Yeah.
01:03:57
Speaker
It's great.
01:03:57
Speaker
Man, I gotta check this out.
01:03:59
Speaker
Sounds awesome.
01:04:00
Speaker
He does a shitload of live shows too.
01:04:02
Speaker
Performs all over the UK doing live shows and, uh, some fun music for sure.
01:04:08
Speaker
That's awesome.
01:04:09
Speaker
I'm checking out sunglasses kid.
01:04:11
Speaker
As soon as we're off of this, um, what's yours?
01:04:14
Speaker
Uh,
01:04:15
Speaker
I was going to pick a video game and say the new DLC for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Earth Tree.
01:04:23
Speaker
But then you said new album, and I realized the new album that I've been listening to like crazy.
01:04:28
Speaker
Papa Roach.
01:04:31
Speaker
Yeah, Papa Roach.
01:04:31
Speaker
How'd you know?
01:04:32
Speaker
You serious?
01:04:33
Speaker
No, no.
01:04:34
Speaker
Oh, fuck.
01:04:35
Speaker
Not my jam.
01:04:37
Speaker
It wasn't that bad.
01:04:38
Speaker
The new album that I've been listening to that came out, I think, last week.
01:04:44
Speaker
is the new Me First and the Gimme Gimme's album.
01:04:49
Speaker
I can't remember the girl's name, but it plays someone's... All their names are like Me First and the Gimme Gimme's dot, dot, dot in drag.
01:04:59
Speaker
Actually, Aura Drag, I think is the name of that album.
01:05:01
Speaker
But this one is... They're playing a quinceanera.
01:05:03
Speaker
for a girl turning 16.
01:05:06
Speaker
And it's kind of like Johnny's Bar Mitzvah, which is one of their other albums.
01:05:15
Speaker
It's unclear whether it's a real live album or whether it's an album recorded to sound like a live album.
01:05:24
Speaker
I honestly have no idea if they actually played a girl's quinceañera and if 15 years ago they played a kid's bar mitzvah.
01:05:32
Speaker
I wouldn't be surprised, man.
01:05:34
Speaker
Exactly.
01:05:36
Speaker
Exactly.
01:05:36
Speaker
That's why I don't know.
01:05:37
Speaker
Because, like, if it was somebody else doing it, I would believe, I would be like, oh, yeah, obviously they didn't actually do that.
01:05:44
Speaker
They're just doing it as a gag for the album.
01:05:47
Speaker
In the case of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, you really don't know.
01:05:51
Speaker
It may have been a legit, they may have actually convinced someone to let them play a quinceañera.
01:05:57
Speaker
But,
01:05:59
Speaker
It's not got as many great songs as some of their other albums, but it's got some bangers on it, as they all do.
01:06:06
Speaker
For those unfamiliar, they are a punk cover band supergroup made up from guys from four, maybe five now, different punk bands.
01:06:19
Speaker
And they all came together to make a cover cover band and they play punk covers of mostly classic songs with in this album, they have just a little bit of contemporary, which is that's cool.
01:06:33
Speaker
Very exciting.
01:06:35
Speaker
Similarly, I check that out as well and then we can change notes as we do during the week anyway.
01:06:41
Speaker
Definitely.
01:06:42
Speaker
Definitely.
01:06:43
Speaker
Rob Goodhart says he has the We Love Our Country album.
01:06:47
Speaker
That's a great one, too.
01:06:49
Speaker
They got a great cover of Jolene on there.
01:06:51
Speaker
I think that's the one with Jolene.
01:06:52
Speaker
That might have been We Are A Drag.
01:06:55
Speaker
But anyway, I don't want to get too into trying to remember what album, what song is on.
01:07:01
Speaker
Anyway, thank you everybody for watching and hanging out with us and listening to us.
01:07:07
Speaker
Big shout out.
01:07:09
Speaker
To all the people out there who gave us a follow on Facebook because they turned off our ability to live stream like this and now we were able to do it again.

We know that we're still a growing show and you're going to hit bumps like that along the road.
01:07:34
Speaker
So we appreciate you guys working with us for that.
01:07:36
Speaker
People that are not just only fans, but also friends and family.
01:07:40
Speaker
Exactly.
01:07:42
Speaker
Exactly.
01:07:43
Speaker
Well said.
01:07:44
Speaker
Seriously, though.
01:07:44
Speaker
Thank you, everybody.
01:07:46
Speaker
Yeah, we really appreciate it.
01:07:47

It means a lot to us.
01:07:49
Speaker
We just want to hang out with you guys, smoke cigars, and pair with them every week.
01:07:55
Speaker
And we're happy to do that and provide a little entertainment and disconnect from the real world, hopefully.
01:08:02
Speaker
So thanks, everybody, for hanging out with us.
01:08:05
Speaker
And we will see you next week.
01:08:06
Speaker
And I'll, as always, let Dennis hit you with the catchphrase.
01:08:10
Speaker
Thanks, everybody.

And remember, we want you to drink better, but we want you to drink less.
