Speaker: Alright lads, welcome back to another episode of Who's Got the Ball, myself and Shane here. Once again, Shane, what is the crack? All quiet. We did our NFL draft. That's been the highlight of my week so far. I wouldn't even know if I'd call the highlights, let's see what goes for the season. But you were off becoming a TikTok star in Rome, so you can you can do all the talking for the sun for a change.
Speaker: Yeah, i was I was in Rome on my holidays. and Obviously, Aisling has helped me with so many different recordings, so many different things and clips and all sorts stuff. I had to repay the favor when she wanted to make a TikTok.
Speaker: So yeah, you'll have to check that out. I'll leave it i'll leave it um up to you to go find it. I reposted it on my TikTok, so it should be easy to find. and but Yeah, I had a great time. It was absolutely roasting. It was like 34, 35 degrees. Felt like more because of the humidity. It was like being like in a sauna when you're going to all these sites. But then you just see how amazing Rome is and you kind of forget about that stuff. So yeah, it was it was such a good experience. I really liked it. probably I put it up there with my favorite country that I've i've been in. I think now it it was so good and I'd love to see more of Italy after seeing that. But yeah, I mentioned later in the show, obviously I've also got the Aer Lingus Classic coming up this Saturday, at TCU versus UNC. You'll have seen on our social media, got a press conference with Bill Belichick in earlier in the week and I got a good question for Bill and he was in flying form as always with the monotone answer. But yeah,
Speaker: Yeah, i that's coming up on Saturday. So I'm looking forward to that. Obviously, a bit of and college football action in the Aviva. But and yeah, that's that's pretty much all that's that's new with me. The weather is absolutely terrible. Or according to maybe the worst rain that we've had all year.
Speaker: 100% the worst time we've had all year. I can't believe how heavy it is. We have drainage issue like out with the front on the roads. And normally it's like the puddle gets to a point you can jump over it. It's actually a swimming pool out the front at the moment. There's absolutely no chance of getting over that. You're going to have down around number 10 to get out of my house now at this stage. But yeah, hopefully it clears up by the morning. I just...
Speaker: we We really shouldn't complain. We had such a good summer this year. But when you see this, then you're like, it's so dark. It's only eight o'clock. It probably is eight o'clock at this stage. Yeah, it's not a deal. But look, we live we'll just get on with this.
Speaker: Well, to brighten your day, we have a full episode of of football to talk about this week. Brighton. Yeah, Brighton to start off. Brilliant. Well done, Shane. We move on to Brentford then. Both of those were our performance of the of the first weekend of the Premier League, as Shane still laughs at his joke.
Speaker: A transfer roundup then of all the big, big transfers that have gone down recently, as there is a lot. And then we did a little look at the Champions League league phase draw. I hadn't seen the fixtures, but Shane threw them out to me and we both reacted to the biggest ones. um Some massive ties thrown in there. And then we gave a little thought on each of the rest of the Premier League games from the first game week. So every team is covered while we have no NFL or NBA. and give them all a bit of time and then finally previewed Spurs versus Newcastle and this Saturday and we gave our predictions for that one so plenty of football and go enjoy the episode we'll jump straight into it.
Speaker: First weekend of the Premier League done and dusted so we'll start off how we usually do when the Premier League season is in full flow and that is looking at our performances of the weekend there was a couple of teams that stood out to us and First was Brighton against Aston Villa. So I just think that the football they played in that first half, I know Villa had a red card, but they were already done with at that point. It was already 4-0. So the football Brighton played was superb, even though Villa were bad. and And that Villa lineup was just terrible on paper and on the field. But you can't take it away from Brighton how how they dismantled this Villa side.
Speaker: No, I thought Brighton were superb. So I was kind of flicking between this and the City game. And Villa were just all over shop from the first minutes. They had that one chance at the start from the Brighton, almost a mistake. But after that, they just couldn't really get anything going at all. And Brighton just ran all over them.
Speaker: Absolutely destroyed them. Villa didn't force Verbruggan into a single save in the whole game, despite the fact they were... 4-0 down, obviously, at halftime. Not coming out in the second half and kind of just sitting there, trying to sit in and say, OK, this is done. Let's just not concede anymore.
Speaker: I think it was one of those mercy things from Brighton that they didn't try and push anymore because with the way they were going that first half, it could easily have been seven or eight. And six big chances, four goals, 21 shots to
Speaker: 137 sprints in 96 and the first and last I'm going to mention that just in front of me there. I just thought they were man million times better than Villa who they just looked so undercooked and they weren't the only team that looked undercooked coming into the first weekend.
Speaker: and Yeah, I agree with that. I think... the kuiper was superb on the left wing and he looked a bit suspect last season when he played left back because he can't really defend that well that was the same when he played for belgium he's better going forward and he adds a lot um because his level of deliveries is is so high gomez then on the right wing too looked really good coming off the back of his strong world cup for paraguay Obviously Hinchelwood got two goals, possibly the worst celebration I've ever seen on on his first goal where he did the eye thing, but he completely missed his eyes and he was going on the top of his head.
Speaker: So yeah that was yeah, that was the only negative on the day really for Brighton. But that attack looks looks really, really good with those three kind of sitting behind Rudder. Yeah, 100%. They are always recouped really, really well. and If by some miracle Minte does end up leaving them before the end of this transfer window, like they're not in a bad place at all with the players they have there. and They always have the next cab in the rank already in the club.
Speaker: They're never scrambling like, oh, we're losing a Minte, we need to go and sign a new left-footer right winger. He's definitely sitting there somewhere in the background just waiting to come in. Did they well back go and they have this Greek lad? I'm not even going to try and pronounce his name because the first weekend the season. I don't want to sound like I'm fooling myself already, but he wears their number nine.
Speaker: he's like He's more than ready to come in and kind of back up Jorginho Ruta, who I thought was really good as well. and He's such a presence up top. And then obviously the Cowper was excellent. Hinchelwood was excellent. I'd just say Gomez was brilliant as well. So yeah, they'll have absolutely no issues this season again. If they can just...
Speaker: find some level of consistency. It's the only thing that kills them. And they know it's the I know it's the thing that kills a lot of teams in the league, but they have they have a team that should definitely be pushed in top six, top seven this season if they can just find the consistency to keep going.
Speaker: Yeah, I agree with that. I think another team that are in the same boat then are Brentford. They dominated Spurs. So this was our other pick-out for performance of the weekend. or Just before you do get on to Brentford, I just want to talk about Joe Gomez's wonderful debut. No, thank It's up there.
Speaker: I have that up there with Jonathan Woodgate, the Real Madrid debut, where it took him 17 months to get in the pitch. He scored an own goal and was sent off after 66 minutes. And the world famous um Ali Dia for Southampton, who was not even a real professional footballer, but Southampton signed him, played him for 21 minutes.
Speaker: Matt Letizia called it embarrassing. I said it was embarrassing to watch. and he was hooked after 21 minutes he said he was related to George Wayne I think Joe Gomez is right up there with that he lost the ball for the second inchable goal and then his red card is just utter madness but that's who he is I thought it was actually hilarious to watch with how bad it was I do think he's a quality player and it won't set him back that much but i just wanted to bring it up because it was really really funny Yeah, it was a huge head loss just the way he kicked out after that, after losing the ball again, like for God knows how many times in that half. He was just, he wasn't done any favours by some of the passes he received, but he was just terrible. No, absolutely not. all in all but yeah back to brentford i think this was the best football that was played all weekend personally against spurs they just dominated them 3.87 to 0.57 obviously that doesn't tell the full story but it tells it backs up a lot of what i saw um six big chances 26 shots
Speaker: They missed a penalty, obviously, as well, but utter domination by Sangare in midfield alongside Jan Outs. He should have been in the World Cup squad for Germany, by the way. He was superb alongside Schad at the two of them, got snubbed, my opinion. and Coyote looked great again at right back.
Speaker: The team looked really balanced and then they added Juve for 40 million then during the week, which we'll get onto shortly because Lewis Potter really isn't an out-and-out left back, but he did a job there. So I think they've done so well and they just really, really ran Spurs ragged and it could have been a lot more. It was probably similar where they had a bit of mercy in the second half and and didn't go for the kill where they could have.
Speaker: Yeah, I think if if this is the kind of game... where it's happening after five weeks and every team is like up to full speed. I think Brentford could very easily have gotten five or six there. I thought Spurs were beyond dreadful, to be perfectly honest. It just sent Gary just absolutely walked through him. That Spurs front three was maybe the maybe the weakest of the top eight that was put out over the weekend. And with all the money they spent, I know they've now brought in Sabino, Savio as he's now gone by, and i move so we'll get on to that again when we're talking about transfers in a minute. But
Speaker: They were just horrific from start to finish. There was no quality at all in what they were doing. Tonali looked like a fish out of water in the middle of the park for him. Just did not look ready at all. And Gallagher and in the number 10 position is, he's a six.
Speaker: Like, why are you playing your six or ten? just It just made no sense. Yeah, as you said, Brentford just dismantled him again from the first minutes. Out ran him, out him, out taught him, out everything them.
Speaker: Bar possession, possession, just... Clearly isn't going to matter a whole lot in the Premier League this season because first it's 60% to the ball. That's good. They were trying to pull themselves back into it. Did yeah. Villa had. Oh no, that doesn't count. Villa 27%. Villa were just horrific. But yeah, I thought Brinford were absolutely out of this world. And like when you look back to the start last season, everyone's like, this man is gone. He's not doing anything. Blah, blah, blah.
Speaker: There was still people this year saying, oh, Brinford are in trouble. got away with it last year. No, they're just, there's another team are just so well won. well run and like like Brighton and Joe what it shows was when you have teams that kind of they keep the players keep the consistency again they've the next player coming up whenever they lose someone that's the key to success in this league and the two of them are the two shiny examples of it and from week one they've shown us Yeah, I agree. And you make a good point about possession there.
Speaker: Every team that won on Saturday had less possession than their opponent, as did Chelsea on Monday night. So we're clearly moving away from a possession-based league, which is quite interesting. Yeah, Spurs were just terrible. and You mentioned Gallagher, but Bergvall was so bad as well.
Speaker: Two of them hooked at halftime. Tenali was completely off He looked like he did at times for Newcastle when Bruno wasn't playing. I feel like Bruno did bail him out quite often with his legs and kind of breeding of the game. So Spurs are going to need to sort that out because maybe Mateus Fernandes does that job, but he's also quite young.
Speaker: So yeah, that wasn't a good start at all for him. Just in general, Spurs were terrible and Brentford just made them look silly really. And missing out on Europe probably allows them to continue to build this year and hopefully get into it this time around from an Irish perspective with...
Speaker: with Andrews and Kelleher and Collins there, who also looked really, really good. And he scored twice midweek then as well. Yeah, which is great. And he could have been on the score sheet against Spurs as well. He had a good chance. But yeah any other thoughts on this one?
Speaker: No, I just, I think, so I do think Spurs will be okay this year, but it's going to take, I just find, like, it's the same with Liverpool trying to win their last year. When you go and try and replace your whole team in one go, it does take a while to get up to speed.
Speaker: And in Liverpool's case, they didn't ever get up to speed. And I hope with Spurs fans' sake, that doesn't happen again because they've had it rough in the last few years. If they have another year in the bottom half, I think heads are going to absolutely fall off this season, which would be funny, but I think they deserve a bit of happiness. Yeah,
Speaker: Yeah, that remains to be seen. We'll see how they go. Only certain amount of teams can finish in the top half, as we said. And we've both got Brighton and Brentford pegged there, so Spurs want to clean up their act. Yeah. A transfer roundup is well in order because we haven't really done it in a while.
Speaker: And there's been a lot in the last few days because things that are really starting to kick into gear with... teams needing to fill out their squads and positions that they're clearly missing that were kind of probably already on their minds and then violated after week one week one of of the league so some deals that are done in the last few days or run through them nico gonzalez gone to newcastle 48 million pounds with a 4 million option and then Man City moving to bring in Ayoub Buadi from Lille for with a €5m option.
Speaker: ah i wouldn't say as a replacement because Gonzalez didn't play much, but they both played the same position. and More so as a Rodri replacement, I think Buadi. But Newcastle really needed that. And I think it'll be a great signing for them. And I think Buadi will be very good for City, maybe down the line. Maybe it's a bit early and for himself and Anderson. But I think in the long run, he'll be good.
Speaker: Yeah, 100%. think... The one game I kind of sat down and watched of Morocco in the World Cup in full was their Brazil game. And when he came on, he was the absolute star of the show. And if he can kind of do that for City, where he's just sitting screaming the back four and just playing passes, left, right, centre, a bit like...
Speaker: like the old, like Rodri when he first arrived, before Rodri realised he could run from box to box without anyone touching him he was that good, he used to just sit in and kind of spray balls. I think Bugatti can do that eventually, but he is only 18. It's a lot of money and a lot of pressure to put on someone who's only 18, especially when they've kind of lost their whole midfield from last year now. Rodri going, Nico going, Bernardo Silva going, and they haven't really replaced them all yet. So...
Speaker: well If they get Enzo Fernandes in, I think he'll be a good foil for Bugatti as well. But I think they still needs to need to help Anderson and Bugatti in particular to to kind of get anywhere because they were so poor against Bournemouth. They were really lucky to come away with that from away from that game with a win.
Speaker: And again, Bournemouth just ran all over him through the middle of the park. And Elliot Anderson was kind of doing it on his own. They played Mark Gay as a six. like It was utter insanity what I was watching. So they have a lot of work to do still.
Speaker: I honestly thought he was was better than Anderson in that game though. I thought Anderson was miles off and Alex Scott just dominated. Yeah, he was, yeah. Alex Scott was so good in that game. He looked like the one that should have went for that race. He good. Any thoughts on Gonzalez to Newcastle?
Speaker: I don't know why City are getting rid of him. I think it's a really solid signing from Newcastle. I don't think we've seen the best of him in the Premier League at all, but what he did for Porto in the Portuguese League and the Champions League when he was there, I thought he was super superb. He was...
Speaker: really wanted Liverpool to sign him when he became available. He can play six, he can play eight, he can probably do ten. He's a really good shot in him as well. And Newcastle did need someone with a bit more experience in that midfield because the two they started against Liverpool or were quite young. So they needed someone with a bit of bit of an older head. I think he's only 24, so he's not that much older, but just someone who's played at the top, top level.
Speaker: Yeah, I agree. I agree with that. I think they'll start, and it's a good price as well. Just 52 million in total in pounds if the obligation or the add-ons are are triggered. Next up is Baliba. Finally done to United. Now, last season, we had Brighton wanting 115 million pounds for him.
Speaker: And United got him for 65 plus 5 after a poor season. and But I think that the talent was clearly there. That talent never leaves you. And he was still consistently one of the best players.
Speaker: covers of ground and and winners of second balls in the Premier League last season, even in a poor season. So I think he's the key player for United at a young age, and something they've lacked for a long time. And I think it was, i think it was good bit of business by United.
Speaker: yeah I think once he's back fully fit and ready to go, I think he'll be a staple in that midfield every time he's fit. As you said, he did he covers so much ground, he wins balls back. I think there's still a lot of growth in him as well because he he is, what is he, 24, 25? 22, I think.
Speaker: Oh, is that all? okay Yeah, I think so. There's a lot of growth left in him as well. So i think he's the runner we've said United needed all summer. yeah It's just it's a pity for United he's not back until probably October before he gets on the pitch.
Speaker: Yeah, probably be. Returns from injury. probably be after the the first international window, which actually doesn't roll around ah too late. It comes very quickly, which will be annoying at the time. But you mentioned already. But it also lasts a month this time, I think. Yeah, which is terrible.
Speaker: But you mentioned already, so we might well cover it off. Savinho to Spurs, £75 million, £10 million by option or add-on, keep saying by option. And then...
Speaker: loan plus obligation of 50 plus 10 million pounds for marmouche also from city to spurs i think both of these players are are good that valuation and what spurs have spent in this window is absolutely crazy but they did need these type of players i just don't know why they spent that much on these two in particular Yeah, whatever about Marmouche, I think he is another one who will be a staple of the Spurs side.
Speaker: Savio, I don't even know what to call him anymore. He's Savio on his jersey, so I'm going with Savio. He's never shown anything a City that that kind of shows you he has a next level to go to. He scored two goals in his whole his whole career at Man City. One was against the Palace team, we were preparing for a final And the other was against a relegated Wolves. I think it was against one of the teams that was relegated anyway. That's all he's ever done. His shooting has always been so weak. His delivery is really poor.
Speaker: i don't know how he's 75. Well, I do know how he's 75 million. But i just think it's absolutely ridiculous that that's the hill you're willing to die on where you're going to put this much money on someone. If you're paying 75 million for Savio, then I think Cody Gakbo should be worth 190 million in this market because at least he has the smallest bit of output compared to the two that are after signing from City. He's shown in the Premier League what he can do. So, yeah, I just i think it's i think they needed this bo is it.
Speaker: They needed players like that, but are they the players they needed is the the big question for me. Yeah, i feel like everyone referring to the number of assists he had, even in his limited games, is a hard staff to get behind because he's assisting Haaland, who could probably put away any type of a chance with me or you crossed it into him.
Speaker: Yeah, I was just going to say, I could assist Haaland. like Solanke is not going to give you that same level of output or a charlison. I do think Marmouche is a good sign and 50 million and and the 10 extra, I think is probably around his, ah his valuation, but yeah, the Savino one is just, I, I don't know. I don't know what to say about it really.
Speaker: Arsenal then moving for another centre-back. Kansa, £51 million pounds plus four. Shock horror. Additional add-ons. I don't know why they needed him, to be honest. They've got so many centre-backs already. makes no sense. like They need another striker and they went and spent £55 million pounds on another centre-back.
Speaker: It's just Arteta's obsession to having every single centre-back in the league available. On the face where they understand why they've gone for someone like him, he's 28, Premier League experience, England international, your that all ticks boxes, fair enough. But when you kind of dig down into it, once Stadiva is back, he's at best third choice centre-back.
Speaker: Then you also have Ben Weiss who can play right-back, Timber centre-back, right-back, Calafiari left-back, centre-back. Yeah, it it doesn't make sense. Every single one of their players now is centre-back. They must have 10 centre-backs, maybe ace. I won't i won't be dramatic. I'd say they actually genuinely have eight centre-back options. Why did they trigger their their hinter the hincapié option if they're never they're just never going to play him? I don't think that was an option.
Speaker: I think that was already agreed, yeah. Okay. Yeah, he's another one who can play left-back as well. I just, I don't understand what they're doing. And as you said, they need forwards and they're concentrating so hard on defenders because Saliba's going to miss three months.
Speaker: It's, it yeah. Like, I think he's a good player, but I think he's kind of, he's hamstrung himself now. He won't be in the next England squad for the Euros is my, my big start. Although they did take Nani Madoeke, so you never know. Yeah.
Speaker: No, I just looked there. It was an option for him. So it makes even less sense. Like... Yeah, that is my thing. Like, what are they doing? i And also, the...
Speaker: The fact of signing Kansa, like you just said, because someone, like, they're looking at it, okay, one of our defenders missed in three months. You just listed, like, two hands worth of players that can cover those positions. Like, I just can't wrap my head around it, but that's Arsenal. They won the league last year, so it's obviously working. and Chelsea continued to defy logic, and they got £65 million pounds from Villa for Nico Jackson and £45 million pounds from Forrest for Liam De Laat.
Speaker: lot of I don't know what to say about these that neither like just makes absolutely no sense the lap came 30 million pounds scored two goals looked absolutely atrocious and they make 15 million pound profit on yeah the the lap was so bad for Chelsea last year that he decided he was Irish again he just just such a poor season such a poor signing and it's like oh here's 45 million it's the clubs that are bidding for these players that annoys me like why aren't you starting at 15 and then Chelsea might take 30 because they're like oh god his value isn't what we think of this Nicola Jackson 65 million
Speaker: Is that because he was on the books at Bayern Munich last season that everyone thinks he's good all of a sudden? Like, it's just, as you said, it defies logic. Themselves and City are just so good at selling players. And I don't understand, like, is it a City and Chelsea tax? Because, like, if Liverpool were to sell Gakpo, they're probably going to get a max of 60 million for him.
Speaker: he's 27 he's Premier League proven he's won at Premier League he's scored double figure goals in every season he's been at Liverpool like how is he not worth 100 million to someone if City are getting 75 million for Savio and I'm not just saying that for Liverpool like United have always struggled to sell players in the league Arsenal's record sale in the Premier League is Alex Oxley-Chamberlain for 35 million when he went to Liverpool like I don't understand how Chelsea and City are so good at getting these ah outrageous fees for players who are not worth a quarter of what they're getting from. It it just it drives me insane. It really does. And they actually annoys me beyond belief. And it annoys me more than it should because shouldn't bother me. But it's just the fact that every other club seems to struggle to sell players by those two.
Speaker: Yeah, and I think the only thing I can think of is that it's to do with the age profile of the players they sell and the fact that in City's case, they've been successful. So they go, they come from a successful setup, they're still young, we'll buy them.
Speaker: Chelsea were terrible last year. So this just doesn't add up with the lap. Maybe Jackson. It's the fact they're all on tenure contracts. Yeah, and then you've got Jackson who, like you said, he looked okay for Bayern, but not for that value. and said like If he went for the laps price, I'd be like, okay, that makes sense.
Speaker: Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, and after that went for £35 million, so they get something to profit on it, not £50 million. Yeah, I agree. Next up then, bit of a saga over at Liverpool, continued all summer with Bradley Barcola.
Speaker: They offered £50 million for Yankouba Mente and then £60 million, and Brighton said they wanted Ailey, which is outrageous. Liverpool offered £50 million for Pap Saar from Palace, Ismail Assar. Ismail Assar, sorry. yeah um And that was rejected too. And it feels like that was kind of the bluff to guess.
Speaker: Barclay had done £110 million pounds plus £10 million in add-ons. A huge transfer fee. How are you feeling after that one as a Liverpool fan? and I'm just glad it's done.
Speaker: Like, you see a starting price was $150 million, so they have it eventually come and found some sort of middle ground. It is still an awful lot of money, but as I said to you in the message earlier, the market this season is just so inflated with Rodgers, Elias, Nicholas Jackson. and All these players are going for just mad fees. So I think at this point, we need to just put the transfer fees to the side and just say, he's good player. He's someone Liverpool needed.
Speaker: But now it's like, who's next? Because Liverpool still need two or three more transfers before Tuesday as comes around. I think there'll still be something with either Saar or Minte. I don't think they're both dead in the water yet. I thought they were more a double bluff to get the Mbaye deal over the line, not the Barcola deal. Because I think Barcola was always set in stone.
Speaker: But PSG don't seem to be budging on Mbaye either. So we'll have to wait and see what happens there. like His numbers... Well, they're good. They're nothing spectacular. But he is still only 23. He got 11 goals in Ligue 1 last year, two assists. It was a goal or an assist every 159 minutes. So one every two games. If he can keep that up in the Premier League, I'll have no issue with it If he gets 18 goals in assists in his first year, brilliant. Great to see. But I think there's still a lot of work to do with his finishing, as we saw in that Champions final in particular, the chance at the end against Arsenal.
Speaker: where he just kind of literally was the biggest hitting hope on his weak foot I've ever seen. olli still was All he had to do was, I say, sit and talk about podcast football and no footballer myself. But if he cut back and inside into the right foot, he opens the angle a lot more for him. And it was Saliba was almost... He'd have been in there the advertising recordings if Berkola did that at the speed he was coming across to them. So there's work to do, but I'm i'm just glad it's done. And I just want them to...
Speaker: not just kind of rest on this one now, go and find the next one and get Lamine Camaro over the line. That's the one that's been talked about massively in the last couple of days. So we'll have to wait and see. But yeah, I'm just glad it's done. Yeah, I think it was the Athletic that had a doubt Barclay that he's like, he never like lit the world on fire at any age, but he worked so hard behind the scenes. So I'm sure he continued to work on those weak points because it sounds like he's that type of player, which is good sign.
Speaker: The only issue with, you know, if he does get 15 to 18 goals and assists, and that's not good enough for £120 million. pounds That's where the price tag then comes into it.
Speaker: Like, you're going to need more than that. Like, the amount Liverpool spent on Ezek as well and Verts, the output needs to come this season from those two to take a little bit of pressure off Barcala and then maybe next season he'll kick on further.
Speaker: think the biggest thing would be probably getting that Kamara deal done because the midfield looked and poor in the first game and a lot of gaps there and especially like you said against the young Newcastle and pairing in midfield they looked maybe the weaker of the two which is a bit a bit worrying but Yeah, I think once another midfielder comes that should be set up well enough now for the season. But yeah, Barclay will offer something very good, and but he needs to hit the ground running because obviously we saw a last season with Salah's downturn in form, it it massively affected the team.

I think that would be some unbelievable business. and He'd be worth whatever you have to pay for him because you know he'll give you output. He's already done it in the Premier League. He's done it in La Liga. He's done it for Argentina and he's still young.
Speaker: Yeah, the way Spanish clubs work is hilarious. They had a board meeting and voted on if they should send sell him to Barcelona or not and they all voted no. If Arsenal get him in, yeah, and get rid of that other donkey they have a front, I think they'll be in a much better position with Alvarez than Grocares.

So if you want to throw them out, the English teams, and we can ah give our opinions on some tasty fixtures that are, I'm sure, lined up.
Speaker: Yeah, so I'll go in alphabetical order because it's easiest in front of me. So Arsenal have Real Madrid at home, Bayern Munich away, Borussia Dortmund at home, Real Betis away, Lille at home, Napoli away, Saba at home and Slavia Prague away. I should have looked up who the Saba team are before we came on, but do you want to do that there while I'm running through this?
Speaker: And Villa have... Let's switch on Arsenal first before we move on. Oh, sorry, okay. Grant. Yeah, that's tasty though. Real Madrid at home and Bayern away. It is, yeah.
Speaker: Jesus. And then Dortmund and Real Betis. Troy Paris going to the Emirates. Yeah, that is interesting. I mean, yeah he could have he could have been playing for West Ham in the championship, but no, he'll have to slumber at the Emirates, the poor fella.
Speaker: He would have been lucky if he was playing for them. Yeah, I know, mad. I think Madrid against Arsenal at the Emirates is going to be an absolute belter. Mourinho assume he hates Arsenal after managing Chelsea I think he's going to go in there and just cause mayhem Bayern Munich away will be a tough one for Arsenal as well but I think they might come through that Dortmund have recruited well but are they anything special who knows left away and see and then obviously Betis have gone to batter Arsenal Troy Parrott four goals easy easy day to park from and then their pot four games look quite easy on paper considering haven't heard of one of them and the other one is Slavia Bragg
Speaker: Yeah, they should get through pretty easily, but with those kind of lower level ones, but there's some interesting ties there. What about Villa? Villa have it tough, to be perfectly honest with you. So they have Barcelona away, PSG at home, Dortmund at home, Club Bruges away, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. Fenerbahce at home, Galatasaray away, and then there pot four teams at Prague away as well, and Viking at home.
Speaker: So again, their top four games are probably six points. Club Brugge away, they should be looking at getting win there. But then Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Barca, PSG and Dortmund are far from easy games at home or away.
Speaker: yeah that's a tough that is tough for villa especially with the state of their squad at the moment like dortmund maybe not against arson but they'll be fancy in that villa game if villa can't get recruits in and to get barcelona and esg from the first pot is just terrible also yeah i looked up that uh sabah they're in the azerbaijani premier league and One game in, they got their win. First game of the season, so they're flying it. um And to get here in the last round, they knocked out an Israeli side. So very good. Well done.

And outside of that, i Liverpool could win any of the others, in my opinion. like I would take Liverpool over any of those other sites. At home, suppose. I don't know. I think at home you could beat them.

Speaker: Yeah, I think it's tougher than they normally get, considering they normally somehow get Wrexham and Lincoln in Champions League. I think this will actually give a bit of a test this year. Yeah, okay. Is United next? And I want to know who we're playing.
Speaker: Yeah, it is. It's the last one. So, Anderica Madrid away. That first. Bayern Munich at home. Roma at home. Sporting away. Yeah, Leipzig at home.
Speaker: Villarreal away. Saba at home. And Como away. Yeah, that, okay, that's ah that Como away game. Great sentence. Could be a tough one. Leipzig, I would much rather them at home than away.
Speaker: Yeah, absolutely. Atletico. Leipzig is at home. Sorry, Leipzig is at home. Yeah. Yeah, so that's nice. Leipzig at home. Atletico is away. Okay, Atletico away, that's very tough. And Bayern at home is always going to be tough. I think those two games, if United got a draw against Atletico, Bayern will beat United. And then the rest of the games, if they can manage to get four or five wins out of them, I think they'd be doing very, very well.
Speaker: and Yeah, so if they be if they can beat Roma at home, Sabah at home, and Leipzig at home, then like that's probably be enough for them to release the playoff. And then Como away... I thought Colmour weren't up to much when they played Liverpool in the pre-season. Now I know it's only pre-season, but inside of Nico Paz, they don't seem to have much.
Speaker: yeah Yeah, so I think that's winnable as well i in that lovely de lovely setting. And then Villarreal away, you never know what kind of, like you never know what those Spanish teams who are like themselves in Betis.
Speaker: Are they there to make up the numbers kind of thing? Like Madrid, not Madrid, Spain have five teams in Champions League this year as well. So you never know when you get come to the fourth and fifth place teams what they'll be doing outside of the big three, really.
Speaker: So it's probably not the worst. It probably looks worse on paper than it will prove to be. Yeah, I think that's not too bad. I think United and Liverpool got away with two decent ones there. I don't think they're they're the worst. And Villarreal started with two draws in their first two games, so obviously not a great start for them. And both United and Liverpool have them, they should be aiming for a win in those games. um Yeah. Okay, interesting, interesting. I'm looking forward to the Champions League now that United are back in it, but ah plenty of good ties there overall. Yeah.
Speaker: Next up, we'll just run through the rest of the fixtures from last weekend the Premier League. Any thoughts? I'll stop after every every couple of games, and if you have any thoughts, throw them out there.
Speaker: First on Friday. i just have one before you even start to list them off. Yeah, go ahead. The 10 games in the Premier League, it was seven home wins, one draw, and two away wins. And that was kind of a theme of last year as well, where a lot of weekends and you come out with it, six or seven home wins, one draw and two away wins. And the two away wins are always the top teams.
Speaker: I think home games have never been more important. i let you run through them now and we'll just kind of win we talk on watch it talk talk through them as we go. My God. But I just think playing at home is going to be so important, and especially for teams trying to push for the Champions League.
Speaker: Yeah, that's actually interesting. I didn't realise there was that many home wins. didn't really think about that. So that's interesting, and especially when we see some upsets. But first we had Arsenal beating Coventry 3-0.
Speaker: Havertz, Saka and Odegaard, I think we kind of t touched on Arsenal, had an easy one. And then on Saturday morning we had Hull, the biggest upset of the weekend really, with them beating United 2-0.
Speaker: Caught United completely cold on two set pieces, took advantage of them and then defended superbly. I thought they were really, really good tactically as well and how they pressed up on United. So credit to Hull. I think that I underestimated them. They did very, very well. And yeah, Arsenal just battered Coventry really.
Speaker: Yeah. I honestly have very little to say about United because it it is just one of those where they were caught for two set pieces the way they were all of last season. And they still like they had 21 shots. It was just one of those. If they were still playing now from Saturday morning, they wouldn't scored yet. It was just one of those where nothing was going to go in.
Speaker: Hull were full value for their win, and in my opinion. I really thought so. The way they defended... The way they're back five, I thought their back five was superb. I thought they were two fullbacks and one of them, the left fullback, got man of the match. I thought they were absolutely brilliant. And the three centre-backs were excellent as well.
Speaker: They still have their their captain to come back in there as well, Charlie Hughes. I think he's their captain. you They got him from Wigan. I think he's a brilliant centre-back as well. I still think they go down. They probably still finish bottom, but at least they've had a day like this to kind of celebrate.
Speaker: And then commentary, they're going from their hardest game to their easiest game now. They have Hull at home next. So we'll see more about commentary in that game than we'll ever know from them going away to Arsenal. Yeah, we'll see if that home record and holds true and see if they can grab a win at home, seeing how important it is. Yeah, I agree. Hull deserved their win. And United had a couple of chances they should have put away.
Speaker: and They just weren't up to it. So they'll need to learn from that into next week against Ipswich. Yeah. Moving into the 3pm window on Saturday, Everton beat Palace 2-0. Everton were just more clinical than Palace. Palace just were not at the races.
Speaker: And then Ipswich beat Sunderland 2-1. Goals from Emerson, Newseignan and Clark to wrap things up. a Lovely free kick from Angulo for Sunderland. But Ipswich deserved the win. They were the better team. And I think that they they were good value for that win on their first game against a tough side in Sunderland.
Speaker: Yeah, so the last the Mitzlits were in the Premier League, they won one home game all season. So it's good for them to get off the mark on their first one. And as I said, home wins going to be so important this year. So getting off the mark straight away puts them in a really good footing. As you said, yeah, they absolutely deserve the win. I was watching the kind of goal show or goal rush, whatever it is, and that was the main game on it.
Speaker: i just I actually thought they defended really well. But again, Sunderland just looked miles off it as well. Another team... coming into a European football this season, they're going to need to buck off straight away because they could find the tough if they're going to continue put in performances like that.
Speaker: Yeah. What a free kick though. Unbelievable free kick, yeah, 100%. I think, yes, Underland, they think they'll do do a lot worse than last year. they were They outperformed a lot of metrics underlying their performances last year, so I think that was a bit of a fluke of a season, even though it was a great story.
Speaker: Forest then losing 1-0 at home to Leeds, and this is a terrible game. Stack got the winner right at the end. Both teams look pretty poor. Leeds looked a lot better and when they played them in the Cup then on Tuesday, and they beat them 2-0 and could have been more than that.
Speaker: and But this was a real rusty game, I think, for both sides. Forrest looked very, very shaky, but ah obviously with a new manager in there, Glasner's great, great coach. So I think it'll take time and he'll sort things out.
Speaker: And then we had City against Bournemouth. to move into the next game. And that was, we already kind of talked about it earlier, but City were kind of lucky to get the win. They needed two goals and in the last 10 minutes from Gahie and Gabbardial in added time.
Speaker: Bournemouth looked good on the break and I think they'll be good under Marco Rose as their new manager. But yeah, City have a lot to work on. Yeah. First of all, I have another silly staff here that you probably don't know.
Speaker: The last six Nottingham Forest managers, now four of them were last year. The last six have all lost their first game in charge. and So there's another one for you. Man City were absolutely dreadful, I thought. They really were. Haaland had two or three chances. He was kind of probably still having a World Cup hangover.
Speaker: Thank God he finally cut his hair. he can Actually, after he's yeah I think he looks better personally. I think everyone else is upset about it. it maybe Maybe he loses his talent when he lost his hair the same way Fernando Torres did when he shaved his head going to Chelsea. Yeah.
Speaker: I think City will <unk> he will obviously be okay. But I just thought this was was such a tough game to get a former team who 19 on beating coming into this.
Speaker: Just a really, really good side. Marco Rose is in there long enough that he's kind of, they knew what they were getting straight away. He's the same as Iriola and the way he plays his football. The players know what they're doing. It's basically the same squad as last year. They've somehow managed to hold on to everyone.
Speaker: when there's like a through that meme where Dan Glover walks into pizzas and everything else and the whole place is on fire. bro i think it's and Ormond are the only ones who seem to have avoided that this summer.
Speaker: They've gotten their players in good and early. I think they still need a striker but keeping the likes of Cliver, Tavernier, Tyler Adams, Adam Scott who we talked about earlier absolutely superb and then adding the likes of Antonio Silva.
Speaker: What's they call him? Alan. Adam, that's the golfer or actor. Oh yeah. Okay. Yeah. I think keeping Scott is is massive for him. I hope they don't sell him now in the last days of the window, especially not to Chelsea.
Speaker: Yeah. and Next and last two, Newcastle drew with Liverpool 2-2. think Newcastle played very well, a lot better than a lot of people expected. They looked good on the break. Their defence was organised.
Speaker: um I think Liverpool kind of got out of jail there with that last-minute penalty. and But both teams grab a point. And then Fulham against Chelsea was actually a cracking game on Monday night. Fulham dominated possession. They made a few silly mistakes. Chelsea looked great with Joe Pedro, Rodgers and Palmer, and but looked a bit shaky at the back. and And Fulham looked better than I think we kind of anticipated straight away. Our blow had them working quite well. They looked a bit shaky in defence, but I think they could be a good watch this season. they They covered a lot of ground. They worked hard. And I think that they'll be OK maybe this season. But yeah, that was a good game, actually. Those last two games were probably two of the best of the weekend.
Speaker: Yeah, um I still think Fulham are in trouble. But that's only because I have them to go down in in my predictions. I think Palace, who you predicted, were horrendous against everything i actually meant to mention when we were up there. they missed They hit the post in the crossbar before everything scored. They could have tuning a lot. And after that, then...
Speaker: They just kind of fell apart and someone we should have mentioned in the transfer round, even though it wasn't a transfer, but Mateta going to Cab to try and get his contract cancelled is... my God....while playing up front for first is one of the funniest things I think I've ever heard. It's it's kind of like, it's literally slapping you in the face while we're patting you on the back kind of thing, where he's playing up there, he missed that sitter, and then he comes out an hour after the game that he went to Cab to try and get his contract cancelled.
Speaker: it's it's It's mad. I think Palace will be in trouble. I think your shout was quite good. Liverpool, Newcastle, just dreadful from Liverpool, the two goals I can see this. and Just made it so easy for Newcastle on the break.
Speaker: Why nobody is jumping on his back and just dragging him down the way. like and'm i'm not an advocate for personal fouls. I hate when teams do it to Liverpool, but if you can't beat him, join him. No one is catching him. You have to just take Whitsa down before he gets past halfway line. Take your yellow card and get reset.
Speaker: Gravnabirch is the problem for both goals, doing two stupid flicks on the edge of box. First one instead of shooting. The second the one, he had three easier passes than trying to play Isaac through two lines of four.
Speaker: Just madness. Liverpool were very lucky, but I still don't think Newcastle were any great shakes. I think if Liverpool don't give him those two goals, I think they played well. I do. I thought Visser was incredible. He looked like the player...
Speaker: I thought to he looked like the player that Newcastle thought they were getting at the start of last season from Brentford. Joe Willock was a good sub when he came on. Obviously a great finish, but Liverpool just made it so easy for him. I think when they come up against teams that won't make it as easy for him, I think they'll have a tougher time. But we'll just have to wait and see.
Speaker: but I might be writing an apology to Newcastle fans in three weeks if they go and win their first three, but we'll have to wait and see. I just don't fancy them still. Yeah, I don't think they'll win their next three games, but I think they're they're a lot better than you give them credit for. I think they were the better team of the two, and if they're that terrible, then it's a bad omen for Liverpool.
Speaker: A lot of things to sort out. Oh, it is 100%. Liverpool need a lot of signings, but we'll do we do a transfer special. Yeah, we're only one win one weekend anyway, so a lot of things will change. But it was good to have football back. um And Brighton sitting top of the Premier League right now is a great sight with their four-goal win, which is brilliant.
Speaker: Joined by Arsenal, Brentford and Everton and Hull in the top five, which is brilliant. So we have one last feature. Champions League wrap talk. Yeah, Champions League sort. We might as well end it now.
Speaker: Last feature then that we kind of looked at a lot last season was previewing a game and the at the weekend ahead. So we're going to preview Spurs versus Newcastle. 5.30 game on Saturday. Spurs at home to Newcastle.
Speaker: what are your thoughts? This is a game, and I know it's only week two. this is a six-pointer. No, it's not a six-pointer. I think this will tell us an awful lot about both of these teams and what their ambition is for this season. Spurs were absolutely dreadful the first game, as we mentioned. Newcastle looked better than Liverpool at times, but can they do it if they're meant to be the team that's going after us we'll have to wait and see here if you can like I don't know actually wait Spurs they can probably sit in the way they did instead of trying hit Spurs on the break as well yeah I think this is the kind of game that whoever wins this is going to feel really really good about themselves whoever loses it's going to their fans going to like oh god we really are in big trouble this season and i will have to wait and see which way it goes
Speaker: Yeah, i I think even though Spurs are at home, those away fan boos for Tonali are going to be ringing around that stadium. and So they're going to bring out the boos again. like i think Newcastle got in Nico Gonzalez, as already mentioned. They need another striker and they need probably another attacking style midfielder that can cover multiple positions. Yaisal has said that he's confident that they can get more players in. I believe they will.
Speaker: I know Spurs were awful. We talked about it already. Zerbe looked void of answers on the bench. He looked dejected, to be honest. um And I think they've gotten a lot of new players, but Newcastle have also done a full rebuild and they looked better week one. I don't i don't know. I think Savinho and Marmouche are what they needed. They'll definitely improve them. They'll be fine this season.
Speaker: But I don't know will they be fine this early. I just can't see Spurs coming out with a win, maybe a draw, but I i prefer Newcastle out with a two. You already mentioned how bad the attack was for Spurs and Newcastle's backline looked strong. So if I'm giving prediction, I'm going to go with 2-0 to Newcastle. I don't think Spurs are up to anything yet, and I don't think they're going to get their first Premier League goal this weekend either.
Speaker: Yeah, I'm going 1-0 Newcastle. the The kind of goal they scored against the Ruppel the first one where Vista just breaks and feeds a Langer, feeds someone else, and it's when it's from a corner or something where Spurs have put on everyone up. They've left one man back and it's Tonali and he slips over and off Newcastle go.
Speaker: I think it'll be a dreadful game of football. I really wish it was a three o'clock game, another half-five game where the world is watching it, but we'll just have to wait and see how it goes. I think it could just be too two stodgy teams, and it's only it will only be stodgy because it's this early in the season. not saying they're going to stodgy all season. I just think when it's the second game, as you mentioned, two pretty much brand-new squads going up against each other, two new managers.
Speaker: if you i'm still counting the derby's new manager he only managed eight games last season this first full season i think it'll be it itll could be a tough watch but we'll have to wait and see yeah yeah think back a new well i i think uh i'll guess i'll be at the college football game in the aviva when this is on so i'll get your opinion on how it's going and also get my dad's opinion who's a newcastle fan so i'll get either side of the bias coin and i'll put the two together and then i'll get on what's actually happening But yeah, that's that's good. We're both going for Newcastle. I think that they will win it, to be honest. so I'm glad that you went with that, despite your hatred.
