Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to today's episode of the Daily Leopold Podcast, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Adarsh Ramchand and it's the Monday Review Show. The Reds have their first win of 2025 progressing to the next round of the FA Cup, following a 4-0 win at home against League 2, Akrington Stanley. Goals from Jota, Trent, Jadon Dans and Kieza helped the Reds through and to just discuss the game I'm joined by Louis Easton. Louis, how's it going?
00:00:34
Louie Easton
I am great into the next round and we just watched the draw actually a nice easy trip to Plymouth for the next round don't want to get overconfident but yeah no I'm in I'm in a good mood nice to see Kiesa get on the score sheet
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it was a great game. And like you mentioned, we just watched the FA Cup draw getting Plymouth away. Louie, for those that don't know, Louie's wearing green. So we we had just had a chat before we hopped on that he manifested us getting Plymouth.
00:00:59
Louie Easton
It was a complete accident. This is actually a San Etienne shirt and an Aston Martin F1 hat, so all sorts going on.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
see
00:01:06
Louie Easton
there not No Plymouth, I haven't got any Plymouth in my wardrobe yet.
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, you're you're not going to get any Plymouth merch before we play them, so definitely not, yeah.
00:01:13
Louie Easton
Definitely not.
00:01:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, so we're obviously discussing the 4-0 win away at home to Akrington Stanley. um Just want to get your thoughts. Overall performance, what did you make of the of the game?
00:01:25
Louie Easton
I think Akrington Stanley really turned up and they gave it a proper go and we thought they would ah because you know for a lot of those players it was a dream come true being able to play at Anfield and that's the magic of the FA Cup really but the way Liverpool played I think they could have scored more um but But 4-0 is nothing to be sneezed at, especially in the second half. ah You know, the game really started to get away from Matt Hringston Stanley when Liverpool started attacking the Cop. I thought there were some brilliant individual performances there. um I'm sure you'll name a couple of the players ah later, so I won't get on to that just yet. But ah yeah, really impressed with how Liverpool played, even though it was against a team struggling in League Two.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, definitely. and ah And I guess, like, obviously the most important thing was getting through to the next round and having sort of a good performance and definitely giving some of those youngsters a chance, which you'll we'll touch on in a bit. um When you got the sort of starting 11 news, Louis, how did you feel seeing players like Engo Moha getting his first start?
00:02:24
Louie Easton
I was excited. I was so excited to see Rio and Gamoa play. I was a bit, I was a bit cheesed off to see that Federico Chiesa didn't get a start, but regardless, ah good to see Harvey Elliott starting the match. But Rio is a player that we had heard of, I remember when he signed from Chelsea because Fabrizio Romano tweeted it um and say said that he's really one to look out for for the future and signing someone at 15 and already having attention is a sign of things to come definitely and I saw some clips of him playing in the academy
00:03:00
Louie Easton
ah under 18s as well, Premier League matches. ah And I was so impressed and I just couldn't wait to see him get some minutes. I think this was the perfect match for him to get his first match in front of a crowd at Anfield and, you know, he really didn't disappoint. Those turns is one of one's.
00:03:22
Louie Easton
ah His control his speeds with which his feet move around the ball, you know those quick step overs you associate with Ronaldo Nazario back in the day um And I was just absolutely blown away his confidence as well. You know, he really isn't fazed by ah attention and it's so easy to see that and I think we really have stolen one from Chelsea's Academy with this one as per usual with from Chelsea's Academy and They don't know how to hold on to their best players, but I'm not complaining.
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, no, I mean he was yeah touching on that first half performance in particular for he was absolutely sensational. He's ah he's definitely for me a throwback sort of winger just gets the ball loves taking on his man dribbling twinkle toes a bit of fancy tricks as well. And I think he really did like you can hear the noise in the stadium every time you got the ball.
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Looper fans just sort of anticipating that he's going to do something really exciting. um and he And he played his part in definitely the sort of first and second goal, well, mainly the second goal when Trent scored an absolute screamer. But just touching on that first goal, Akriton Stanley kind of had a free kick attacking the cop end. And then we go up the other end, great counter attack and Jota finishes it.
00:04:31
Louie Easton
Yeah, it was good to see Nunez get an assist as well. He's been facing a lot of criticism. and When Robbie Fowler was, I think it was on ITV, he was having a go at Nunez for not testing the keeper enough. And he is absolutely right. ah But Nunez worked very hard for that goal. I think it was Soboslai that gave him the ball for the breakaway.
00:04:53
Louie Easton
a great ball from him. Yeah, it's just a classic Liverpool counter-attack. We've seen it under different managers, in different eras, different players, but it's always the same result. Liverpool hitting on the break and scoring nicely and, you know, Jota's never going to miss from there. That's what he's there for. I was a bit surprised to see the formation, actually, when Jota was sort of playing in that number 10 role and Soboslai playing from deep. that's something we're not used to. um And I do still think we may need some reinforcement in that sort of number 10 role because I still think Harvey Elliott's better off the right. um But you know, Jota did his part, came from deep. I saw him just in front of the back four at times in that first half. ah But yeah, a great team breakaway goal.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it was brilliant. It's great to see Jota back on the score sheet. We all know what he's capable of and probably on his days, the best finisher at the club alongside Mo Salah. So it's great to see him back on the score sheet. And then we go in 2-0 ahead of halftime. Trent Alexander-Arnold, great finish. Really, really nicely worked as well because I think Soberslide did a little dummy or a little pass into Trent just before he finished it. So yeah, great to see him back on the score sheet, putting in the performance with the captain's armband on.
00:06:04
Louie Easton
Yeah, just natural. Unbelievable, the way that he had no time. And, you know, he didn't even hit it that hard, but it was so nicely placed. You know, inch perfect. um Felt for the Atkinson Stanley goalkeeper because he couldn't get anywhere near it. And he really tried. But When you have someone that talented, Trent, you know, we speak about the speculation of him going to Real Madrid, you can understand why they want him when he's got such technical ability. And yeah, nice to see him smiling after he scored as well. it you know I don't doubt the fact that he loves this club.
00:06:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, indeed. I mean, and the thing is, he was always going to put in a performance given the sort of level of our Clinton Stanley, ah with all due respect to them. But um just want to go back to Ingamo, because he was involved in that second goal, he got the ball sort of dribbled out.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
the defender had a shot and then it ricocheted to Sobol's life, played it into Trent. I mean, it's crazy to think that a 16-year-old, given his first start in a Liverpool shirt, so confident on the ball, is involved in the game.
00:07:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not just someone who just wants to run at his man. He wants to you know commit people. He wants to create opportunities. And I think that's so exciting as a prospect for Liverpool. Obviously, yeah he came off in the 70th minute to a standing ovation.
00:07:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But kind of just want to touch on his performance a bit more. What what did you make of, given it was his first start?
00:07:25
Louie Easton
Well, it's not only the fact that he's 16, but he's also the youngest ever player to start for Liverpool, ever.
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:07:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ever.
00:07:32
Louie Easton
you know ah that And that is just crazy to me.
00:07:34
Louie Easton
Imagine he scored. and And I feel like he's one of those players that would score and then just sort of not react too much.
00:07:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:41
Louie Easton
Just straight face.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:07:43
Louie Easton
He's got that sort of ah confidence in himself. you know I just love watching players like him. I don't care what club. ah I love seeing a player that will take on defenders.
00:07:57
Louie Easton
You know, we it's become a bit of a rarity now to see a winger, even a player that you, a position where you sort of expect them to try and take the ball past a player.
00:08:09
Louie Easton
Nowadays, they just stop and pass it back. Even Luis Diaz does that, and he's still exciting to watch.
00:08:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:14
Louie Easton
um But, you know, he doesn't mind how many players he has ah around him. And he's one of those players that has the confidence in his team to win it back to the point where he's ah allowing himself to risk. I don't know if that's something that slot was involved in. I don't mind. A player that will run at defenders, scare them, is fast, has quick feet.
00:08:38
Louie Easton
and willing to try and try again. I understand he had a bit of a slow start to the second half, but even when he got the ball in the second half, he still wanted to have a go. He doesn't mind what but part of the match is. He'll still try his best to maneuver his way through a defense. And, you know, once he gets a run of games, hopefully in the not too distant future for Liverpool, granted that there is a lot of competition in that position,
00:09:03
Louie Easton
I'm sure we'll start to see his quality ah in bigger matches as well and I cannot wait for that to happen.
00:09:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
as as you You definitely raised a very important point, which is he's got that explosive dynamism, that ability to take on a player. And I think when you're at such an early age, you don't want to coach that out of the player. I think it's very important that Slott just gave him the freedom to just express himself. And I think it's so refreshing for a lot of Liverpool fans to see a player from the academy just be himself and just play like he's playing a normal match, like his isn't the the occasion doesn't phase him. And I think it was just so refreshing to see a player just just every time i got the ball i was so excited
00:09:40
Louie Easton
I don't know. That's how I feel about Ben Doak as well when he plays for Liverpool.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
and no
00:09:44
Louie Easton
you know it's And Ben Doak started at a similar age. you know We got these two young wingers who are quick, explosive and will take players on. Ben Doak does that on the right. Rion Gamoja does that on the left.
00:09:57
Louie Easton
Who knows if we'll still have them in 10 years time, but who's to say that they won't be starting week in, week out for us in 2032 or whatever?
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just every time I got the ball I was Yeah, like so and if you excited. look at it, it's an exciting sort of Academy front three. You've got Engemuha, Jade and Dan's up front, and Ben Doke.
00:10:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that is a mouth-watering prospect.
00:10:16
Louie Easton
McConnell behind them as well. ah Curtis Jones is from our academy.
00:10:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, I will.
00:10:21
Louie Easton
Imagine if we keep Trent as well. We could honestly you know enter Champions League matches with sit players just from our academy and give it a real go at the moment. Imagine this team in five years' time.
00:10:33
Louie Easton
are There's so much potential.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's one of the things I love about the FA Cup in particular, just gives those opportunities to those academy players that might not necessarily get an opportunity, maybe the Premier League or the Champions League, but when it comes to the Cup, they're going to get given an opportunity. And we mentioned Plymouth in the next round. I'm sure we're going to see a lot more of those academy players featuring and and in round four of the FA Cup.
00:10:53
Louie Easton
Yeah, absolutely. And I do certainly hope so. and I just love... I love having a good academy.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
its far yeah
00:11:00
Louie Easton
That's all I was... It's so fun!
00:11:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's amazing and it's and it treats the fans to see what what's what talent is coming through the academy and yeah it's just it's just a great honor to watch these young players just expressed their football at Liverpool. um I know it's all this positivity but before we go to a break I do want to touch on a key player in the first half we mentioned you got the assist for the first goal Darwin Nunes but he had a couple of chances also to score it didn't get on the score sheet.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um ah we We just seem to keep having this debate about Darwin Eunice, Louis, but what did you make of his performances, his mischances, his overall game?
00:11:34
Louie Easton
I mean, it's so you can't doubt the man's work rate and you do have to feel sorry for him because you can tell he really, really cares. ah you know with it's It's better to have a player who's not that talented but works hard rather than having a player who is talented that doesn't work hard. Remember Balotelli when he came in? he He had all the talent in the world. I think he won some prestigious award, like the Golden Boy, I think it was.
00:12:02
Louie Easton
And you've seen other players who turned into proper greats win that award. So he had all the potential in the world. He came to Liverpool, didn't train properly, scored like a few goals and then and but and then basically wasted our bank account. With Darwin Nunez, you know,
00:12:22
Louie Easton
He has ability. I will say that. We saw it at Benfica when he played against us in the Champions League. He scored a freakish goal against us and he could have had a couple more. But something's just not clicking for him. And we keep on saying, when is it going to click? And now you just get the sense that it never will click for him. And um I just wish, like,
00:12:46
Louie Easton
all Liverpool fans support him and you know chance his name over the smallest stuff really trying to get him riled up and he plays with more passion than any other player in the entire club you can see it he works hard he gets into defenders faces he has words with the referee and he's a joy to watch it's just the finishing and we saw it again at Stackrington Stanley
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thanks for watching.
00:13:14
Louie Easton
He had a chance and he put it over the bar. Just make the keeper work for it. No, that's what Robbie Fowler said before, kick off in quite a sort of critical ah monologue about him. And it's getting to the point where it might just be that it wasn't meant to be. And, you know, he's still young, 25 years old. He's got another seven years left of his best years, probably more. You know, he looks after his body. He's very, very athletic.
00:13:44
Louie Easton
but it just feels like it won't work.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And that's the frustration, I guess, with a lot of local fans, because we can all see the potential. We can all see the work rate. It's just, we're asking for that sort of a bit of finesse, a bit of being able to finish those chances when they come to you, maybe just working the keeper instead of rushing the chance.
00:13:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think I'm with you, Louis. I just really hope that it does work out. and But I do think the time is ticking and there's a big decision to be made at the end of the season.
00:14:05
Louie Easton
Yeah, I agree. And it just feels like it it's he's someone that you shouldn't sell because we signed someone for 60 to 70 million, whatever it was.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:15
Louie Easton
And he works hard and he cares about the club and he's trying to improve on his game. No, I don't doubt that. I've seen videos of him in training where he's just smashing it into the top corner.
00:14:28
Louie Easton
I don't doubt that he has ability, but it's just when the moment is uh needed ah for that clinical finish and it has happened before especially against Newcastle last season we can see that it's there but it's just not there every week and yeah it does feel like maybe he isn't right for this club as harsh as it feels and as gutted I am to say that it does it just doesn't seem like it's going to work ever now
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know it's an interesting debate. I'm sure we'll have this conversation about Nunes in more games to come in the season. But we're going to touch on the second half after this very short break.
00:15:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Amazing. So going into the second half, we made a couple of changes during the game. Obviously Engo Moho coming off, Jane and Dan's coming on. Obviously him him getting ah the third goal for Liverpool. It's his third goal for Liverpool in 100 minutes, which is pretty impressive just to say that. But I just think his finish was excellent. He just took it with so much I don't know what the word is, just smashed it into the back of the net.
00:15:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
For me, he's one of the most exciting players in our academy, just as a striker, because we've we just had the discussion around Nunes and his lack of ability to finish chances, but Jaden Danse doesn't have that problem, to he does he?
00:15:57
Louie Easton
Thank you.
00:16:05
Louie Easton
No, and you can tell he absolutely loves the club as well. He absolutely loves it. You can see how excited he gets when he scores. um And never forget, he played in the League Cup Final for us last season and nearly scored. He's clinical. He really does make the most out of his chances. And I do think he can definitely become a bright player for us. He's got a bright future ahead of us. He's a proper prospect.
00:16:32
Louie Easton
and yeah, his finish was so clinical and it was only seconds after coming on and it he deserves it as well because he had a really tough injury, five months out, missed pre-season and he's come back and I'm sure that girl will mean the world to him.
00:16:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Hmm.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I was just about to mention that I didn't have a preseason. He had the injury and obviously I'm pretty sure he would have been in slots plans at the beginning of the season, maybe to feature in more games than he has done already this season, but it just shows what a player he is and the potential that he has.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Um, he kind of reminds me, ah it's a bit very early to say this, but his ability to finish is very similar to Harry Kane, probably when he was early on, like just smashing it into the, into the corner.
00:17:12
Louie Easton
Yeah, he does play similarly to Harry Kane. I can definitely see what you mean there.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and he's got so much potential wins. We're talking about Nunez earlier, not finishing his chances and five minutes on. not Not only does he finish the chance, he actually creates the chance in the first place, taking on, I don't know who he was in Axton's team, but taking them on, playing into Kieza, who had a great chance to score himself.
00:17:26
Louie Easton
Yeah.
00:17:31
Louie Easton
Yeah, I was, I'm gonna be honest, I was gutted when Kiesa didn't score. And I wanted him to score so much, ah because he's one of these players that you just really want to get behind. We haven't seen him much in a Liverpool shirt yet, and I'm so excited to have him in our team. ah So yeah, I felt a bit frustrated for him, but in the end that didn't matter anyway. And we got, we got, ah we got,
00:17:57
Louie Easton
All of the positives from the game in the end, uh, Jayden Dan's definitely a positive for us.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and you mentioned Kiesa finally getting on the the score sheet. Brilliant finish from outside the box. I think that was the one thing that Liverpool fans wanted to see from the game. Kiesa impacts goal or assist and he got his goal.
00:18:14
Louie Easton
Yeah, and a great goal as well, outside of the box, miles out, and just perfect in the bottom left corner. The only player I wanted to score more than Kieza was Rio and Gamoha, but, you know, that's asking a bit much at this point. Kieza, yeah, he and he loves the club. He works hard. we I remember when he came on for the first time, I can't remember who it was against, but he just ran non-stop for the last few minutes. I think it was a Champions League match actually, but ah Yeah, he loves the club and and you can see he was pleased to get the goal and afterwards posting on social media a picture of him celebrating with the you'll never walk alone in the red heart, you know, that's what you want from a player who's just signed for your club, someone who cares someone who works hard and yeah, ah great a great goal like ah once again,
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, and it's brilliant to see like, I think one of the positives is that we take in from this game is obviously Kia's performance getting on the score sheet, but looking ahead to the rest of the season. We want to have options and players off the bench that can take chances like that and make an impact and maybe not just come off the bench, but potentially start games, particularly if Salah needs a rest. So to have a player like Kiesa in your squad who's got that, I think people forget how much ability he's got. And he's won the Euros. He's done really successful things like Juventus and in Serie A. Like we've got a player who's of huge, but not just potential, he's already delivered in his early career.
00:19:38
Louie Easton
Yeah, and I thought it was a bit strange getting him, because I thought he was still a left-winger, because I don't watch it i don't watch much Serie A. But I have a friend who's a Juventus fan, ah who lives or used to live in Rome. And ah I asked him what it was like. He said he's one of those players that didn't really deliver for Juventus, but felt could have done more. And he was still upset to see him go. He just couldn't get minutes. and so I just hope it doesn't have that future at Liverpool.
00:20:09
Louie Easton
um But, you know, we mentioned Salah's challenge for the Ballon d'Or and the fact that there's no Afcon this season. If there was Afcon in a season and we needed a right-winger, you've got Kiezer, you've got Elliott, you've got Soboslait, now you've got options on the right-wing ah who can come in and play.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:20:28
Louie Easton
so Yeah, definitely a... Definitely solid backup, Kiesa. But yeah, I still want to see him play more.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and i hope I hope so. I hope we get to see Kiesa playing a lot more in the Liverpool shirt. um Touching on another topic, which is what we kind of mentioned earlier, the youngsters. We've seen a lot of youngsters playing the FA Cup for Liverpool, not just this season, but in previous seasons gone by.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
You mentioned Engamojo, we mentioned Jaden Dans, but was there any other youngsters that really stood out to you? um um
00:20:57
Louie Easton
Yeah, James McConnell. I thought he was absolutely terrific in that number 10 role and, you know, he has ability. I remember... I can't remember. See, this is last season. It's such a distant memory now because it was, I know it wasn't that long ago, but it feels like it. He made his first start in an important game and he got on the assist. And I remember Jurgen Klopp applauding him and saying, hey, it's James McConnell. He got on the assist. But we see the quality ah that he has in this team and the confidence he plays with.
00:21:31
Louie Easton
He has these little flicks. I wasn't seeing that last season, but he's, you know, flicking it between players' legs and threading it through to attackers. The future's bright for this guy as well. We talked about Ungamoha and Ko, but James McConnell sort of goes under the radar because he's not an attacking player. He was terrific.
00:21:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, he was like he was exceptional. I think one of the things that really stands out to me about him is that he just kind of sometimes can keep things really simple, but then speed up the play, dictate the tempo. And you're right, he's got that little bit of guile and craft about him, which is really exciting from a midfielder point of view, because you don't just want a midfielder to play it backwards and sideways.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
You want a midfielder to commit players and really test the opposition. And I think, yeah, he did that amazingly. I'm trying to think, Naomi also came on, who obviously got the assist that Kiesa's got.
00:22:18
Louie Easton
Yeah.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, probably wanted to, from his point of view, probably wanted to maybe start the game or feature a bit more, but when he does come on, he does make his impact as well.
00:22:27
Louie Easton
Yeah, I did think Nioni should have started in that sort of number six pivot role ah instead of Soboslai, just because I thought playing Soboslai in a game like this is needless, ah risking an injury and also out of position. And Nioni, we were all raving about him in the preseason tour of the US when he was over there and just, you know, sort of shades of what we're seeing now from Gravenberg in there. um Definitely one for the future as well.
00:22:57
Louie Easton
i I think he's got the sort of builds where he can be easily out muscled. And that's a little bit what I'm worried about because he's really slender. He's quite small, also quite young.
00:23:09
Louie Easton
But we saw that from Gravenberg again, ah when he first arrived at Liverpool. If he bulks up a bit, maybe. But, you know, I'm i'm not so um'm not educated on that side of the game, the physical side as much.
00:23:21
Louie Easton
But, yet you know, the talent is undoubtedly there.
00:23:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Yeah, no, 100%. I'm sure over the years, he will bulk up a bit more and get this probably but with more games under his belt will probably be accustomed to the men's game. um So that's definitely something to that he's going to probably work on, given more games and give him more time for him. um We're going to touch on Atkinson Stanley after this very short break.
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brilliant. So like I mentioned just before the break, it would be unfair to talk about this performance without mentioning Akrington Stanley, the lead two team that came to Anfield on the weekend. And they put in a good performance, Louis. They had chances as well. um I think their player, Josh Woods, who's a big local fan, I think they saw a lot of the press before the match on him um hitting the bar. They had a chance from corner as well, which to be fair, they should have they could have, they come away from this game thinking they should have at least got on the score sheet. But they definitely played their part and credit to them.
00:24:50
Louie Easton
It's sort of, I know this sounds a little bit weird, but sentimentally speaking, it's almost like you kind of wanted them to get a goal just for them.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:24:58
Louie Easton
I know that's probably quite untrue to my Liverpool colours, but, you know, when we went 4-0 up, I was just thinking, God, wouldn't it be good if one of the Liverpool fans on the Accrington Stanley got a goal here at in front of the Accrington fans?
00:25:10
Louie Easton
But, you know, ah I didn't want that to happen at the same time, and thank God they didn't. But yeah, Josh Woods, um i when he hit the bar and the Akron Stanley fans sort of gave a bigger reaction than any Premier League team who comes close to scoring at Anfield, it's just, it's what the FA Cup is all about, isn't it? You know, these smaller teams and boyhood fans of the clubs that they're playing at the massive stadiums.
00:25:40
Louie Easton
um And also, I can't remember who the player was, but the video that surfaced of the accuracy of the Stanley player watching the draw and celebrating like mad when they got Liverpool.
00:25:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm pretty sure it was Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:25:52
Louie Easton
Was that Josh Woods as well? Yeah, let's sign him.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:25:56
Louie Easton
Why not? Give him give him a couple of runs. ah But yeah, though I thought they did really play well. um Their midfield play surprised me. I saw um some of the other teams ah playing in the FA Cup ah that would lower down the Nackrington Stanley just playing awfully and, you know, a huge golf in quality.
00:26:19
Louie Easton
but Yeah, I was impressed with them and um yeah it it looked like a proper contest in the first half at times.
00:26:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah and it's and it's easy to forget that they they kept us out for at least half an hour before Drutta scored and they definitely were a threat not just on the counter attack but i think from set pieces as well and you're right actually the midfield play was really interesting because they they were able to sort of pop it around the midfield a bit and do you know what it's a big credit to them i'm not just saying this because like not to be patronizing or anything but given that they're a league two team it shows that the style of football doesn't just mean, because you're a league two team, you sit back at Anfield, you actually, you you have a goal, you test Kelleher, there was a few opportunities that they had, like we mentioned, and it's it's just refreshing to see that a team can at least throw a bit of punches.
00:27:06
Louie Easton
Yeah, I think they will be more proud of how they played ah getting and losing 4-0 than just sitting back the entire match and only losing by one or two.
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:27:17
Louie Easton
um Well, if that's only if we only scored one or two the and their tactics worked. But yeah, they have a lot to be proud of. It's a shame that I don't know the players because I'd like to give more credit.
00:27:28
Louie Easton
And I thought ah this guy looks good while watching. um And, you know, it's completely gone now. I might have known the players if you were asked me while I was watching. But yeah, I, I'd like to give a lot of credits to Accrington Stanley because, you know, they were struggling in league two all season. I think they're 21st of 24, maybe even lower. I can't remember off the top of my head, but you know, the way they played and the passion they brought to the game was just fantastic.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's that's the beauty of the FA Cup, isn't it? Just having these sort of lower teams, non-league teams, teams in, yeah, the low divisions, giving it a real goal, making their teams proud, their fans proud, and potentially even causing an upset. So that's just great to see. And yeah, credit goes to Akritin Stanley.
00:28:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I wanted to touch on a couple of the other FA Cup fixtures actually, just before we look ahead to the rest of the week.
00:28:18
Louie Easton
Okay.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Non-League Tamworth held Tottenham Hotspur, 0-0, all the way until I think the hundredth minute and then obviously Tottenham went on to win the game 3-0, but Non-League Tamworth holding a Premier League team going to extra time.
00:28:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that th is amazing, isn't it?
00:28:33
Louie Easton
Amazing. That is absolutely amazing. ah it's i I love whenever these stories come true each season. I think last season, was it Maidstone United who went on a proper run, got all the way to the fifth round or quarterfinal?
00:28:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:28:48
Louie Easton
Whatever it was. and eventually got knocked out by Coventry, I think. But what ah these are the stories that you just love. I still remember when my local team, Sutton United, beat Leeds United, who were in the championship, while Sutton were in the fifth tier, and then went on to host Arsenal and only lost 2-0.
00:29:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I remember that.
00:29:07
Louie Easton
And I think in the same season, Lincoln City went on a bit of a run as well. you remember these things if these teams are close to you and they sort of hold it in high regard for the rest of their history you know people for generations will be saying I remember back in the day when Tamworth hosted Tottenham Hotspur people from Tamworth saying that and took them to extra time and gave it a real go and eventually
00:29:35
Louie Easton
eventually I think it was stamina really I watched a bit of that Tamworth match and they just sort of run out of legs if that went straight to penalties can you imagine how tense that would be especially for the Tottenham fans they came up in their numbers they're a bit tense for a lot of that batch
00:29:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, definitely. And I think actually raises a question that I did want to get your opinion on, because obviously before a ball was kicked in the FA Cup this season, the decision to scrap replays was made um by, I think it goes was by the Premier League teams to scrap FA Cup replays.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's one thing where I think it's a bit of nonsense, because Tamworth have earned themselves a replay. They they have earned themselves a replay.
00:30:11
Louie Easton
Absolutely.
00:30:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, like you mentioned, stamina goes
00:30:12
Louie Easton
Absolutely. I couldn't agree more.
00:30:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they just, and I think it's unfair because Tottenham get to bring on Son, Koulouzewski, and eventually they just go on to win the game easily. But I think that's where you're like, Tamworth earned their replay, and they didn't get to have it.
00:30:26
Louie Easton
Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. ah Replays being scrapped so is just the most sort of classist thing that you can do because, well, not classist, but you you understand what I'm saying with the terms of that.
00:30:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:30:41
Louie Easton
you know, the Premier League votes on matches that essentially determine an income for some of these lower down clubs that rely on the FA Cup replays for attention, the press, ah for people who pay to be at the matches, ah not just the fans, but journalists, ah content creators, all of these sorts of people that make it not just a match, but an event, a spectacle for these teams. And you know for for them to have that opportunity missed for where they could have played under the lights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, one of the most beautiful stadiums
00:31:26
Louie Easton
a match that they've earned now being taken away from them, I think it's a complete and utter disgrace and I hope that replays are reintroduced sometime soon because the fact that the Premier League teams that voted on this, you know, they make their money regardless.
00:31:46
Louie Easton
They've got TV rights, ah you know, Amazon, Sky Sports, TNT, all buying rights to show their match on live TV.
00:31:58
Louie Easton
And the fact that some of these clubs may have had that opportunity, but now don't.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:32:05
Louie Easton
It's it's it's wrong. It's completely wrong.
00:32:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I just felt really, like, I felt frustrated for Tamworth of the game because I felt like you, you and that is such a, that is a bigger win, regardless of the result, even if they lost in the replay to Tottenham five, six nil, just the fact that they're there, the replay. Yeah, I completely agree with you, Louis. And yeah, I think it's a disgrace, but.
00:32:26
Louie Easton
And you know, the that this won't, it wouldn't have hurt Tottenham if they didn't win because you they could have just, I don't understand why they put out such a strong squad to begin with.
00:32:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:32:38
Louie Easton
It was like a starting 11.
00:32:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:40
Louie Easton
And the fact that Tamworth weathered the storm perfectly well, unbelievable. But the fact that there's no replay may have altered the thinking from Andrew Postokoglou to not play some of these young players, you know,
00:32:54
Louie Easton
So, you know, why is Pedro Porro, Dejan Kuleshevsky, Lukas Bergvall, why are they all playing in this match? They could have put out their Under 21s team and it still would have been a fair contest because, you know, I can't remember the name of the competition.
00:33:10
Louie Easton
I think it's called the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, where they play their Under 21s teams against, you know, League One, League Two sides and give them a go.
00:33:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:20
Louie Easton
This team is in the 5th tier. Why don't they just do that? And then, you don't have to worry about injuries to your main team. I know those Tottenham have got an injury crisis. Why risk it more? That makes no sense to me.
00:33:30
Louie Easton
And the fact that they had to win that match in order to go through to the FA Cup 4th round. Stupid. and and That all could have been dealt with had they not made that stupid change before the season.
00:33:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:33:41
Louie Easton
Anyway, I'm rambling on a bit.
00:33:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, I wanted to touch on that topic because I felt ah fell a certain way after watching that time with Tottenham game. um Just other results, Plymouth, like we mentioned, who will be playing us, beat Brentford, 1-0 away. ah Manchester United got through against Arsenal due to a penalty penalty shootout win.
00:33:59
Louie Easton
amazing match by the way absolutely incredible maybe not the first half but the second half unbelievable
00:33:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:34:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. I had everything, sending off penalty miss, miss chances, had absolutely everything. And then the last result I want to touch on, Louis, is your local team Bromley losing 3-1 at Newcastle. They went ahead to 1-0 as well, which was really impressive.
00:34:16
Louie Easton
Yeah, yeah, I didn't actually get the opportunity to watch that game in the end, unfortunately. But yeah, good good for Bromley, their first ever season in league football, and they've got to play Newcastle as well.
00:34:28
Louie Easton
Good for them. um And maybe I might even go to a match this season now. Who knows?
00:34:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's see, let's see, let's hope.
00:34:36
Louie Easton
I've never been. I should i should have been.
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:34:38
Louie Easton
It's not that far from me.
00:34:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, amazing. Just before we wrap up, looking ahead to next week, we've got Forest on Tuesday, Brentford on the weekend. Big week for Liverpool, Louis. um what how How does this result in the FA Cup impact the week the week ahead, do you think?
00:34:55
Louie Easton
Well, I don't think too much because a lot of our players that were playing, uh, wouldn't have played in this upcoming match, uh, with the exception of, you know, Trent and Dominic Sobos, like who, by the way, it was a huge miss, uh, in that Tottenham match that we lost. So, um, it'll be good to have him back.
00:35:13
Louie Easton
Salah getting his well-earned rest and he'll be back to his ah scoring ways But top ah Nottingham Forest are such a difficult team to play against such a difficult team ah And we have them coming up in the Premier League soon. It's going to be a immense match let's not forget last season the drama of of that noon years last-minute winner and Nottingham Forest fans all booing after he scored that just Well chef's kiss
00:35:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's going to be an intense game on Tuesday and so on Tactics Tuesday, we're going to be looking ahead to that top of the table clash against Nottingham Forest as the Reds return to Premier League action. That's all for today from all of us at Daily Liverpool. It's goodbye for now and we'll see you all soon.
