Introduction to Hosts and Capsular Project

00:00:05
josh MacDonald
Hi, I'm Josh McDonald.
00:00:06
Miranda Materi
And I'm Miranda Materi, and we are Ham Therapy Academy.
00:00:10
josh MacDonald
We just launched this big new project called Capsular.

Differences Between Hand Therapy Academy and Capsular

00:00:14
josh MacDonald
And while we were at ASHT, the national conference, and on DMs and other things, we've had people asking us, what's the difference? How is there a difference between Hand Therapy Academy, what we've done for now eight years, we just hit our anniversary, and Capsular and what those two function as. So we want to talk about that a little bit today.
00:00:31
Miranda Materi
Yeah, and I think there is so some confusion around it. And I've had a lot of people ask me and even members ask me, well, do I still need Hand Therapy Academy for passing my CHT? And do I need Hand Therapy Academy as a resource if you have this app?
00:00:45
Miranda Materi
And how how does it vary? So what would you say your short elevator pitch is on how it's different before we dive into some of the details?
00:00:53
josh MacDonald
Yeah, yeah.

Hand Therapy Academy's Offerings

00:00:54
josh MacDonald
So ah Hand Therapy Academy memberships give you the both the resources for a day-to-day treatment, whether it's continuing education credits on specific topics or treatment guidelines or anatomy TV to understand things, HEP handouts.
00:01:08
josh MacDonald
The pro and basic plans are really geared around, here's what I need for ongoing education and treating in the daily clinic on a regular basis. Plus the CHT prep of Hand Therapy Academy is the curriculum, the structure and the guidelines that give us a 98% pass rate on people taking the CHT exam. So it's it's um it's this thorough, comprehensive of the stuff that you would take to prepare for day-to-day treatment and the exams.

Interactive vs. Platform-based Learning

00:01:34
Miranda Materi
Yeah, and one thing I'll just tag on to that is that with the CHT Prep Program, we also have live meetings. So it's a little more interactive. You're interacting with us versus the app is you're interacting with a platform, basically.
00:01:47
josh MacDonald
Yeah. Yeah.

Micro-learning Approach of Capsular

00:01:48
josh MacDonald
And then the capsular app really came about because I saw micro learning and I was doing this history micro learning thing on my phone. And the idea is instead of scrolling on social media and just going down this dopamine cycle of, of social media, instead i was doing this history thing and little, little micro learning sessions. Well, we took all of the content you need to know for hand therapy and put that into these little micro doses that we call capsules.
00:02:17
josh MacDonald
But it's all organized by chapters and lessons and topics like a textbook would be. You can just do it in little doses, maybe instead of streaming social media all the time um and getting that dopamine dump. But instead learning something and earning continuation credits in the meantime with your screen time. So getting better use out of your screen time and adding to your knowledge or reviewing if it's stuff you should already know.
00:02:39
Miranda Materi
Right.

Modern Learning Techniques and Benefits

00:02:40
Miranda Materi
Yeah, that's, i think that's great. And I think one thing that Josh and I were talking about is the modern learner and how the modern learner is different now, like, right, like, in, when we were learning and studying about hand therapy was reading a textbook, right.
00:02:54
Miranda Materi
And now that we do have online platforms now, which with videos, which are very helpful.
00:02:55
josh MacDonald
Yeah. Yeah.
00:03:00
Miranda Materi
But now it's even shifted more to snippets of short learning. So even with my kids, they're learning stuff in such a short period of time, it's not spread out over an hour. And a lot of the research has shown that if you have shorter learning periods, you actually absorb but ah a bit more.
00:03:16
Miranda Materi
So I think the nice thing about the Capsular app is it fits, I would say, like a more modern learning setting.
00:03:17
josh MacDonald
yeah
00:03:23
josh MacDonald
yeah And it's set up so that you can, maybe you have 10 minutes in between patients and you've got just some time to kill.

Quizzes and Continuing Education in Capsular

00:03:31
josh MacDonald
You can up and open it up and go through one or two little capsules and then set it down and pick up where you left off later or jump entirely to a different chapter.
00:03:39
josh MacDonald
um ah Or like, and you get asked quiz questions to make sure you're getting retention. So it's really about learning or reviewing things. And if I'm going to use screen time, I might as well use it for something productive, but I'm also getting CEUs. Every time you finish a chapter, you get continuation.
00:03:53
josh MacDonald
continuing education credits for that time spent.
00:03:55
Miranda Materi
Right.

Practical Use of Capsular for Learning

00:03:56
Miranda Materi
And the other nice part is we always have our phones. So I think I was reading an operative note and I was like, oh, I know we have the flexor tendon on the capsule app. It was easy for me to go to the surgical component and look up the surgeries that were done and like quiz myself on them just to see if I'm still like staying up on what surgeries they're doing for flexor tendons.
00:04:15
Miranda Materi
So and how that would affect their rehab afterwards. So I think it's a great tool, not just for, you know, learning, but that refreshing aspect of learning.
00:04:24
josh MacDonald
Yeah, yeah.
00:04:25
Miranda Materi
And a quick way to do it, i I didn't have my computer, I didn't have a textbook, I just had my phone with me and I was waiting at an appointment. I was like, oh, let me just look real fast.
00:04:32
josh MacDonald
Yeah, yeah, that's fantastic.

Gamification in Capsular

00:04:34
josh MacDonald
We also have because every little capsule and there's hundreds of them because it's every topic is broken down to the little capsules that each one has a quiz after you finish it just to make sure you retain the knowledge.
00:04:46
josh MacDonald
You can also then go to a separate function and just do quiz after quiz after quiz. If you're prepping for the exam or you just want rapid fire quizzes and see how you're doing and give yourself something to think about that takes a little bit more thought process, whether you're prepping for the exam or not. so that's a whole extra feature. We, you can track streaks to make sure you've kept, you can set goals. I want to do five days in a row or i want to make sure i do 10 capsules in a week and you can set goals and streaks and track all that stuff. So it's kind of a gamification of the knowledge.
00:05:14
josh MacDonald
to help motivate and and add that element to it, which is research finds is really helpful in retaining information also.
00:05:20
Miranda Materi
Right. And then the quiz feature, it's not all multiple choice. It's select all the that apply, fill in the bank, true, false. Did I miss any? True, false.
00:05:30
josh MacDonald
No, that's pretty much it for right now. Yeah, there's there's variations of each of those.
00:05:31
Miranda Materi
Yeah.
00:05:33
josh MacDonald
Maybe it's a a three-part multiple choice of the peripheral nerves or something like that. So yeah, it's not, they're not designed to be test, CHG test question simulations, but it does help give you that rapid fire. Like here's a question. Can I come up on the answer quickly?
00:05:48
josh MacDonald
There's no long case study questions. It's all just kind of rapid fire to get you thinking quickly on your feet.
00:05:54
Miranda Materi
and great for foundational knowledge.
00:05:56
josh MacDonald
Yeah.

Educational Value Over Social Media

00:05:57
josh MacDonald
Yeah.
00:05:57
Miranda Materi
mean, there is a ton of content in these, some yeah, capsules, a lot of information.
00:06:01
josh MacDonald
Yeah. yeah We've, We figure that each capsule will take you about four minutes to read, answer the question, click through about four minutes each. And I know on the anatomy one, there's four different chapters, hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder.
00:06:17
josh MacDonald
And there's some overlap there, obviously with form and such. But those four, I think have a total of like 150 capsules times four minutes. That's a lot of continuing ed time. That's a lot of time spent getting more value than swiping on TikTok and buying things that end up being junk when they show up at your front door.
00:06:35
Miranda Materi
That's so true.
00:06:36
josh MacDonald
Yeah.

Interactive Appeal at Conferences

00:06:37
Miranda Materi
There was one thing that i really enjoyed at the conference, there were several things, but one thing I enjoyed was watching therapists go through the quizzing feature on capsule because we knew just, don't know, not all of you were there, but then we had a big monitor, like it was basically a big giant iPad where people could click through and do quizzing. And it was fun watching all the therapists get together and like try to quiz themselves, right, and test their knowledge. So was like, that was really enjoyable to watch. And I think fun for pate people, right? Like it's fun for us to test our knowledge and see where we're at and what we might need to you know, we refresh ourselves on or learn.
00:07:07
josh MacDonald
Yeah. Yeah. It was also funny on the first night when they had little tickets where you could get a drink with a ticket um and to see people who tour as they had more drinks going in the evening, they're like, nope, questions.
00:07:17
josh MacDonald
I'm out. Like they weren't ready for it once they had a drink or two.
00:07:19
Miranda Materi
Yeah, not yet.
00:07:20
josh MacDonald
And I'm like, nah, i don't think I'm ready for questions.
00:07:23
Miranda Materi
yeah not yet
00:07:24
josh MacDonald
Yeah. Yeah.

Capsular as a Complementary Tool

00:07:25
josh MacDonald
um So hopefully that this tool capsular gives us another way to learn. Another way to refresh our memory on things, another way to get useful time out of our screen time. We're all carrying our phones with us all the time and get useful time out of that but it's not really designed to take the place of Hand Therapy Academy.
00:07:43
josh MacDonald
Those membership platforms are where you can go search for things. You can go find more in-depth knowledge on a course about Dupuytren's or flexor tendon or shoulders. You can go search for treatment guidelines.
00:07:55
josh MacDonald
That's a separate platform. So it's really two different learning tools that are there to serve two different purposes.
00:08:01
Miranda Materi
Yeah.

Availability and Subscription Options

00:08:02
Miranda Materi
And so Capsular is an app. You put it on your phone. It's available in the Apple Play Store or or the Apple Store or the Google Play Store. And um you can download a month at a time. There's also a seven day free trial on there if people want to try it out.
00:08:14
Miranda Materi
um Or you can do a year. You can buy a year at a time, which makes it a little bit less expensive.
00:08:18
josh MacDonald
Yeah. Yeah. And so like any app, if you just search capsular on the, on your phone's app store, you can find it there and download it Like she said, you get that seven but day free trial. And then if you have any questions, you can shoot us questions as well. Info at hand therapy Academy.
