Lessons from Horses: Trust, Presence, and Leadership

In this episode of The Intuitive Move, I share what 30 horse riding lessons taught me about intuition, presence, and leadership. From my first encounter with horses in Argentina to discovering their lessons during a season of change, I explore how riding became more than a hobby — it became a way of listening without words. Horses mirror our confidence, correct our mistakes, and reveal where our energy is aligned (or not). Through stories of unexpected communication, body language “conversations,” and one unforgettable ride across water and hills, I unpack how horses teach us to look ahead, trust the unseen, and lead with clarity. The episode closes with an invitation to see where life is asking you to ride with vision, balance, and heart.

Discovering Horse Riding Passion

00:00:37
Nadia Stejskal
today's episode, I am going to share my experience after trying 30 lessons of horse riding. Just a little bit bit of background.
00:00:47
Nadia Stejskal
I am originally from Argentina and I never had i close contact with horses, and ah but I was always drawn to them. I was always you know, attracted to the idea of riding a horse. And every now and then i did try some tours, you know, when you visit a new town and you try like a, like an adventurous ride out.
00:01:15
Nadia Stejskal
Not many times, but I did try one in the north of Argentina, which was fun. I also tried one in my hometown, but, you know, counted times, maybe one more time when I was little, but I barely remember that.
00:01:30
Nadia Stejskal
So last year, I had a period of my life where I had no job for three months. And I thought, okay, so now is the perfect time to try everything. I'm going to try every single activity.
00:01:43
Nadia Stejskal
That's also why I have so many episodes talking about these new activities, because I suddenly discovered some passions of mine that i wear that were a little hidden.
00:01:53
Nadia Stejskal
So they came to the surface and I'm so excited. So one of these activities was horse riding. i It was

First Lessons and Time Perception

00:02:02
Nadia Stejskal
July last year. So over a year ago, I tried one lesson and I ah fell in love with the horses and I fell in love with the class. Something weird actually happened that day.
00:02:14
Nadia Stejskal
So I went, i started the lesson. The lesson was basically learning, you know, how to behave around the horse, then mounting the horse, following the instructions, but only walking with the horse.
00:02:30
Nadia Stejskal
So that was a lot of fun. And one thing that happened that I found very interesting was that I felt like the lesson, which was meant to be one hour, I felt like it was like three hours for some reason. I felt like it was, I was truly enjoying the lesson.
00:02:50
Nadia Stejskal
But for some reason, I felt like the time was, I don't know, stretched. And yeah, so I felt like the time was moving slower.
00:03:01
Nadia Stejskal
I went so into whatever it was, maybe the horse energy or the lesson energy.
00:03:10
Nadia Stejskal
i was so present into that moment. I felt that the hour was like three hours. um So that was kind of strange because I always heard that when you're enjoying some activity that the time goes faster.
00:03:24
Nadia Stejskal
Right. But I thought, okay, no, I really enjoyed that. i really enjoyed if you think that time goes slow, maybe it's a good thing because you are more productive.
00:03:37
Nadia Stejskal
you You are so present in that moment that you get a lot of things done or you enjoy doing so many things in that period of time. Basically, you're taking advantage of the time a lot because you feel like it's going slower.
00:03:53
Nadia Stejskal
So

Prioritizing and Learning from Horses

00:03:53
Nadia Stejskal
that was my experience with the lesson. But at that time, I decided not to take more lessons for a while. until December. So Christmas came and I thought, hey, remember that you really, really enjoyed.
00:04:08
Nadia Stejskal
Yes, I talked to myself a lot, but of course in my mind, like I was thinking, hey, remember that you really liked this lesson, horse riding and look, yes, maybe it's a little more expensive than other activities that you like but who says that you need to do one once a week maybe you can go once a month and that's an another mindset change that I started taking.
00:04:35
Nadia Stejskal
So when you have something that you really like, but it's maybe not in the price range you're used to pay.
00:04:43
Nadia Stejskal
So maybe that doesn't mean that you can't afford it. Maybe that means that you need to reshuffle the cards or reshuffle your priorities again. And in December last year, I decided that horse riding will be my priority.
00:04:59
Nadia Stejskal
I really realized that I was truly enjoying that. So finally, i enrolled in January and I started my journey January 2025 and now is September, end of September 2025 and I can say my experience after 30 horse riding lessons and it's been a journey.
00:05:25
Nadia Stejskal
So, In summary, when I first started, as I thought that it was one more activity, like one more lesson, like going to a painting lesson or going like a yoga class, but horse riding.
00:05:37
Nadia Stejskal
I could not have been more wrong. So in summary, I think I discovered a new language, which is the body language. Also, I discovered that we can also speak through energy energy.
00:05:51
Nadia Stejskal
Also, I learned that you can train to be a leader with horses. And i also learned that horses are your mirror.
00:06:01
Nadia Stejskal
They reflect what you feel that day, how you feel that day, how you behave, what's your presence, are you sure about yourself or you're unsure, are you confident or are you not confident? The horse will let you know exactly how you're feeling. And I find that pretty fascinating. It's mind-blowing.
00:06:24
Nadia Stejskal
I still cannot believe it. I also learned that horses understand every single word that we say. And even though the language that we speak with horses during horse riding is mostly, you know, physical, like a body language type of things, like little tabs and, you know, pulling and, you know, moving the reins in a certain way, looking...
00:06:49
Nadia Stejskal
And in a certain way, but also words, depending on the horse, but I found at least two horses that could understand my words. I found that mind blowing because in general, when you have an animal companion in your house and they are used to listening and and they start relating different sounds with meanings and they learn.
00:07:12
Nadia Stejskal
But these horses, I'm not sure. Maybe it's the same, actually, So I started, arrived in my lesson number five.
00:07:22
Nadia Stejskal
I arrived and the instructor, who is so lovely, ah we were we started chatting and I made a joke. Like I was talking to the horse. Hi, do you want to...
00:07:34
Nadia Stejskal
Do you want to go for a ride today? How are you feeling with me going on a ride? And the horse immediately started nodding like no, which was really fun. Oh, what happened?
00:07:49
Nadia Stejskal
Why you're not feeling like going for a ride? Oh, the instructor jumped in the conversation and says, oh, it's because today there's been so many kids because there's been a pony fest and the kids, I think they hurt her.
00:08:06
Nadia Stejskal
And the horse started no nodding, yes, like this with the head. And I was like... The horse was confirming that what the instructor was saying about, yes, that the kids heard hurt her, which was really sad.
00:08:22
Nadia Stejskal
And I was heartbroken and I thought, oh my God, are you in pain? And I was petting, like touching a little to comfort her.
00:08:33
Nadia Stejskal
I said, i am really, really sorry that you're feeling like that. And then the horse said, came to my face and put the face in my in the my forehead, found that almost cried in that moment. It was a magical moment where I felt a connection with the horse, and I barely knew this horse. I think it it was elite, the horse in Jarrahdale horse riding here in Perth, and it was such a magical moment where I felt like I truly had a full conversation with a horse.
00:09:10
Nadia Stejskal
I know. So if we are talking about the horses understand every single word and understanding, can translate energy. Maybe if it wasn't the word, it was my energy, or it was me trying to communicate with her in some way.
00:09:26
Nadia Stejskal
The horse could translate every single thing and responded with physical language, with body language, I mean.

Adventurous Experiences

00:09:34
Nadia Stejskal
um So that was truly mind-blowing.
00:09:38
Nadia Stejskal
And Another thing that I would love to expand a little bit is, so, you know, in horse riding, there are different techniques that the instructor comes and says, okay, so you need to put the foot and keep your heels down, and you need to stand straight, and keep your core engaged, and such and such, so there are many, you need to keep your posture, because the horse can feel like everything that you're doing, and also the this instruction help you
00:10:18
Nadia Stejskal
to first stay you know stay balanced, and secondly, to give the instructions correctly to the horse. Because the idea of horse riding is that you are the leader, so you need to be in a state of full presence and give the instruction to the horse of where we are going. That's basically horse riding, at least from my knowledge.
00:10:42
Nadia Stejskal
I did not read much about it, Everything that I'm speaking is about from my experience with these 30 lessons.
00:10:51
Nadia Stejskal
I was literally trying to learn to put my heel down literally for five to 10 lessons. I think the first 10 lessons was me only keeping my core engaged and learning to put my heels down.
00:11:06
Nadia Stejskal
And for some reason, I was not able to do that. I was always like leaving the heel up.
00:11:12
Nadia Stejskal
I had to work on that, which was fine. at the lesson 11,
00:11:17
Nadia Stejskal
I've been recommended to move with another horse. So I moved from passion to elite. Elite is a polo horse.
00:11:29
Nadia Stejskal
And as any polo horse, she's very responsive. So I had a full introduction before moving with her. The instructor said, look, she's an ex polo horse and she receives instructions and she's very sensitive and responsive
00:11:47
Nadia Stejskal
And I was thinking, okay, yes, fine. I'll just do it more softly.
00:12:07
Nadia Stejskal
I was so scared that in, I think I did that three times, the instructor said, okay, now trotting. And I was with the heel up incorrectly.
00:12:18
Nadia Stejskal
And she started, the horse started cantering. i was like, oh, and then I put the heel down again. So I started trotting, but instead a whole the did canter and again,
00:12:31
Nadia Stejskal
And then by the end of the day, I fixed my heel down thing. So the horse trained me. The horse taught me the language of horse riding.
00:12:41
Nadia Stejskal
I find this fascinating. So yes, the horse was trained in the first place in horse riding, in taking the instructions and what the human is saying.
00:12:52
Nadia Stejskal
But also, once they learn, they can definitely teach others, which was my case. So the horse taught me to pull the heel down because otherwise the horse was cantering, which was a little scary.
00:13:06
Nadia Stejskal
So that was an interesting anecdote. And as soon as... um now I haveve have moved through different horses and places, different schools.
00:13:16
Nadia Stejskal
And I always remember quickly when I put my heel up and the horse starts cantering. That's my mistake. I need to learn to put my heel down and to remember to do that.
00:13:28
Nadia Stejskal
So that was pretty interesting, I find. And another thing that I find... pretty interesting in horse riding is that in horse riding you need to look towards the direction where you want to go you should definitely not look where the horse is you know standing on but also you shouldn't look immediately after so the first step no so I find that pretty
00:13:57
Nadia Stejskal
fascinating because in general you know in the metaphors of life or when you're doing like a walking meditation so you're looking immediately at the next step but with horse riding no you should not look at the very next step you should look at towards where you want to go So I think that can be applied to, you know, when you have a vision in life and that's your direction, basically, when you have a vision. OK, I want to be the working in this area. I want to be wealthy. I want to have abundance. I want to have love and community that supports me.
00:14:39
Nadia Stejskal
So that's your vision. And I find that in horse riding, you definitely need to have your vision. So you should not look down. You should look towards where you want to go.
00:14:51
Nadia Stejskal
That is, first is hard. And secondly, I find that simply so interesting. um So in the lesson number 30th, I went on an adventure.
00:15:04
Nadia Stejskal
The lesson started with the instructor saying, OK, Nadia, so today are going on an adventure. My eyes and my jaw dropped. Because I'm not so adventurous.
00:15:15
Nadia Stejskal
I want to be adventurous, but I need one step at a time. I need to go slow. You know, i I'm not those person that try parachuting or those activities like extreme sports.
00:15:27
Nadia Stejskal
Not for me. I find that there is no need to try all that. However, horse riding, as you can see, is a high-risk sport. So see, I'm trying. I'm trying to be adventurous.
00:15:40
Nadia Stejskal
And until then, I had only tried horse riding in the arena, you know, in open fields, but undercover as well.
00:15:50
Nadia Stejskal
So that was an interesting start of the lesson. Like I heard that my heartbeat went up and I was like, where are we going? She grabbed the motorbike and I had the horse and we went .
00:16:05
Nadia Stejskal
around the farm so this school where i I'm going has a very huge piece of land and we started driving around the property like huge driving in some some ways over there around the farm some parts where it was like high so all the plants were all grown and there wasn't even a trial to go on so it was quite adventurous and at some point we reached a lake so I thought i what a beautiful lake such a beautiful view how amazing and the instructor said okay Nadia so now you're going in the lake and I was like around the lake no in the lake okay and and then you go in and then you go out through that gap over there
00:16:57
Nadia Stejskal
I was like, I could not believe. ah ah My heart went so high bit. And i so i went in the lake and I i felt like I was seen in the 18th century. I felt like I was a Viking. and I felt like I was, i don't know, crossing some mountain, like...
00:17:18
Nadia Stejskal
our ancestors, it it felt a amazing. We did a lot of activities. We did some walking and trotting. Also, we finished with that little um lake, mini lake.
00:17:29
Nadia Stejskal
And next to it, there was a little hill, like a pretty pronounced hill. So the hill, it was also an exercise. I had to go up the hill, down the hill a few times.
00:17:41
Nadia Stejskal
Until we did it three times walking and I was like exhausted. Like it was me who was crossing the lake many times. Like it was me going up the hill. I felt so sorry for the horse, but the horse seemed to be enjoying because he was not stopping.
00:18:00
Nadia Stejskal
In fact, it was hard to manage the horse at this point. it was my nervousness, my insecurities with the area, with the land where we were at the time.
00:18:11
Nadia Stejskal
The horse suddenly stopped responding to my instructions. I am pretty sure i was doing them wrong because I wasn't in my comfort place anymore.
00:18:22
Nadia Stejskal
in my comfort zone, in the arena, you know, where everything is very well marked and everything, all the directions are very clear. No, here we were in an open field, in a real hill, in a real lake, crossing and not jumping, but crossing, going up and down.
00:18:42
Nadia Stejskal
So the whole it was pretty challenging the second half of the class. I'm 100% confident that it was me.
00:19:14
Nadia Stejskal
But, okay, you can never, you never know. You need to try new things. long as you feel okay, you can do them. So we did the hill also a few times, trotting. So trotting up and walking down.
00:19:28
Nadia Stejskal
Again, trotting up and walking down. And that was the full lesson, was doing laps around a huge piece of land and going up the hill, down the hill, in the lake, out the lake, trotting but Inside the lake, I was like, what?
00:19:48
Nadia Stejskal
Why are we doing this? I was thinking immediately in that moment, I was thinking, this is so hard. How

Connection to Heritage and Life Lessons

00:19:56
Nadia Stejskal
did our ancestors did all this time? And I i actually, I told the instructor thing.
00:20:03
Nadia Stejskal
And she said, well, this is what they did day in, day out for 10 hours a day. So probably it was easy for them. They grew up like this. was like, yes, true. um Maybe they are watching me from somewhere and they are laughing.
00:20:19
Nadia Stejskal
Literally, I hope they laughed because I literally deserve that. But at the same time, the instructor said that also they must be impressed of how we drive these machines, these cars. And I thought, yes, that's true. Maybe they are proud of me driving a car, which by the way, it wasn't easy for me to learn.
00:20:38
Nadia Stejskal
I really hope they are damn proud of me for me driving cars. Maybe I'm not the best riding the horse, but you know, not yet.
00:21:00
Nadia Stejskal
I feel This is our animal companion, the number one animal companion who helped us work, who helped us develop transport. The horses were the only means of transport for so many centuries, you know, in land we're talking.
00:21:18
Nadia Stejskal
How many centuries? I think thousands of years. i don't know how many years the the horse was our animal companion, our partner. So yes, we are the leaders when we ride a horse, but the horse...
00:21:33
Nadia Stejskal
teaches you that you need to be a leader, but leader partner. So because it's not only you giving instruction and the horse doing them. No, because you need to give the instruction, you need to trust and you need to listen as well. When the horse stops, please trust that there is something here the or either um there is something ahead or maybe they are going to the toilet.
00:21:59
Nadia Stejskal
but trust the horse is you are the leader but they are your partners as well it's kind of like a partnership leadership type of thing they reflect how you feel and they give you feedback for you to change if you want to change that action or that attitude that you have or that type of energy that you have at the time, the horse will give you the opportunity for you to reflect on that.
00:22:25
Nadia Stejskal
I find that so impressive.
00:22:28
Nadia Stejskal
After all these lessons, I also learned that sometimes trying less is more. You know, the same when you're thinking like doing less is more.
00:22:41
Nadia Stejskal
same goes with horses. So you learn, you know, how to give you the instructions, how to turn, how to move forward and how to stop and hold.
00:22:50
Nadia Stejskal
Yes. So you learned everything. However, when you give the instructions... you need to stay relaxed. You need to give, you know, your arms and you need to go with the flow when the horse moves forward.
00:23:04
Nadia Stejskal
you know Otherwise, you might hurt the the mouth and the teeth and you go with the flow. And when you turn, you don't need to, you know, open your arm.
00:23:15
Nadia Stejskal
When I so first started, I did this. You open fully your arm and you move backwards in the left or in the right. no. So finally, after 30 lessons, I can say most of the time, when I turn, you are keeping your elbows near your body and your hands flowing in near, you know, in the mean center of your core.
00:23:41
Nadia Stejskal
you know, moving with the movement of the horse. And when you turn, you need to move your hand, but always keep your elbow around close to your body.
00:23:52
Nadia Stejskal
So when the horse doesn't listen, it's because you're giving them the wrong instruction. So when the horse doesn't listen, just watch what you're doing. It's probably wrong.
00:24:03
Nadia Stejskal
And I also love that because it's an animal that is half a ton most of in most cases. And you're giving them instructions with simply like this. Literally, this makes a horse have 500 kilogram animal turn left or turn right or move forward with a simply you know tap in their bellies and when you want to trot another tap in the belly or maybe you're like me and you make a mistake and you put the heel up and the horse starts cantering so all these little things like you are simply doing them maybe without intention are
00:24:47
Nadia Stejskal
become instructions and can get the horse somewhere specifically and how how amazing is thinking that less is more.
00:24:58
Nadia Stejskal
I think the whole analysis that I have just done with horse riding can be a huge metaphor. The fact that you need to look where you want to go and not where the horse is standing, that's mind-blowing, that's so metaphoric for life like sometimes you're in a terrain where you're not sure where youre or you're in a state where you're not sure where is this Maybe you shouldn't look at the right very next step. Maybe you should look where you're going.
00:25:31
Nadia Stejskal
So that gives you, okay. I feel like another thing with horse riding, the anxiety first being in out of your comfort zone, the anxiety drops every single class. Maybe you start the lesson and you have like a huge anxiety level.
00:25:48
Nadia Stejskal
But then as soon as you start, okay, I need to trust in this horse. I need to trust you. I trust you, but at the same time, please tell me how to tell you what to do.
00:26:00
Nadia Stejskal
So it's like a two-way communication. Definitely, is not it's not a one-way, I tell you and you do. No, far from that. And another thing that I was going to say
00:26:12
Nadia Stejskal
is about presence. So in the lessons... I want to look, and so I want to see if you go, i want to challenge you if you go on a horse riding lesson.
00:26:24
Nadia Stejskal
Will you be thinking about your phone? where you be Will you be thinking about your wife or your partner or your husband or your boyfriend?
00:26:35
Nadia Stejskal
No, I am 100% confident that you will not be thinking too much. So horse riding brings you to now brings you to the present.
00:26:48
Nadia Stejskal
Maybe that's why the time went so slow, because I was finally present after years maybe of not being present. You know, we have lives where we rush, we go fast and we go to work and we come back and the traffic and this, we are running around like crazy.
00:27:06
Nadia Stejskal
But have you taken a moment to slow down and finally be present? So if you don't have that, horse riding is 100% for you.
00:27:16
Nadia Stejskal
Horse riding makes you think in the now. And maybe please tell me if you try a horse riding lesson, because I'm pretty sure that that's why the time went so slow and I felt like I was doing so many things in the period of time of one hour.
00:27:34
Nadia Stejskal
I find that amazing. So the horse basically helps you trusting in another being that they know that And they have all the knowledge that you need for you to go ahead and ride along with them.
00:28:01
Nadia Stejskal
So if you don't trust in yourself, you will learn exactly. in immediately that the horse will start doing whatever they want. So you will need to be believe in yourself and to be confident, to give guidance, instructions and leadership to the horse.
00:28:20
Nadia Stejskal
At the same time, the horse will give you feedback. If you're doing well, if you're not doing well, if you're feeling a certain way, maybe it's affecting them. If you're nervous, the horse will let you know immediately what's going on with you.
00:28:35
Nadia Stejskal
And the horse will help you stay present. The horse will not let you grab your phone and take a picture or send an audio message. You cannot think on anything else when you're there.
00:28:49
Nadia Stejskal
Well, at least from my experience, I did only 30 horse riding lessons. i was not able to think on anything else other than the lesson and the horse. And, you know, because at some point I started enjoying, maybe from what I'm saying, you will think I was not enjoying. I was like so nervous. No, I started learning.
00:29:12
Nadia Stejskal
Oh, my God. I feel so good. How amazing is this view? I also went on ride outs. I
00:29:19
Nadia Stejskal
It was amazing. And I did a quick video. I uploaded into my story. And a friend of mine asked me, hey, where are you going? What's that?
00:29:30
Nadia Stejskal
Can I go? So we went again on a ride out. It was amazing, simply amazing. Because yes, we took a few pictures, but we were truly present, enjoying the landscape.
00:29:43
Nadia Stejskal
And I can tell you, a thousand percent during my adventurous lesson on the hill and in the lake, I was not able to think on anything else. I was too focused and too present in that moment with the horse that I was not able to remember what I needed to do, you know, after that or the day after.
00:30:05
Nadia Stejskal
And how healthy is to finally get away and get out of our minds. And this is how we start always the podcast. We say we need to shut our minds. And I'm not saying don't use your brain.
00:30:20
Nadia Stejskal
I'm just saying that we need to give the brain and we need to give the minds a break. And maybe that means using the mind differently, like going for a lesson, going horse riding, ongoing,
00:30:34
Nadia Stejskal
or maybe going and trying a new activity, as we always encourage in this podcast. But also, it means enjoying life without overthinking too much.
00:30:47
Nadia Stejskal
It's so relaxing, comforting, healthy. It releases so many toxins. I'm i'm talking about, in general, I don't have the names, but i I'm rear releasing all the good and positive chemicals for your mind.
00:31:06
Nadia Stejskal
And I think we... We haven't spoken anything about mental health, but for sure I did mention that anxiety it goes goes away. When you're with a horse, the more you try horse riding, the less anxiety you have.
00:31:22
Nadia Stejskal
You grow your confidence. Like, how can you measure that? How can you measure your confidence? Is there a way of scientifically measuring confidence? I am not sure, but I can tell you your confidence grows.
00:31:36
Nadia Stejskal
And I cannot speak from experience about depression, but I read that there are studies that horse riding also helps with depression.
00:31:45
Nadia Stejskal
And being with a horse, I think, is such a spiritual experience. This happened in the first three lessons where i was on the horse,
00:31:54
Nadia Stejskal
And I felt like my body was extended. i don't know how to explain that. But I felt, wow, the horse is kind of doing what I say.
00:32:06
Nadia Stejskal
so...
