Speaker: Alrighty then. First Kings chapter one. After a journey of one year and three months, we are finally at the end of King David's life.
Speaker: Verse one says, King David was now very old and no matter how many blankets covered him, he could not keep warm.
Speaker: So his advisors told him, Let us find a young virgin to wait on you and look after you, my lord. She will lie in your arms and keep you warm.
Speaker: I remember reading that as a teenager and thinking, he's like 70. Now, 70 today is not very old, but in those days, it was. I just imagined like a 70-year-old hugging a teenager. i was like... It sounds strange.
Speaker: But... in the ancient world, 3500 years ago, that was actually considered medical treatment. I don't know if it worked, but the doctors in the Middle East, or Near East, 3500 years ago, genuinely believed that was doctoring, that was medical treatment.
Speaker: And let's be honest, Today we have doctors who don't say breastfeeding. They say chestfeeding. Today we have doctors who say there's male, female, trans male, trans female. and The COVID vaccination works.
Speaker: Doctors today are not much better than they were in the past.
Speaker: Verse three.
Speaker: So they searched throughout the lands of Israel for a beautiful girl. And they found Abishag. a beautiful girl with an ugly name. Abishag.
Speaker: Maybe it means something nice in English. From Shulam and Border to the King. The girl was very beautiful. Oh wow. They looked for a beautiful girl. But this one is very beautiful. Okay. To compensate for ugly name. No offence to anyone in YouTube land who is called Abishag.
Speaker: And she looked after the king and took care of him. But the king had no sexual relations with her. Which is probably a good thing. Because he was 70. And she's probably, don't know, somewhere between a teenager and 30 or so.
Speaker: But David could not just die in peace. That would have been great, but no. Verse 5. About that time... David's son, Adonijah.
Speaker: Now David had a lot of sons. Amnon was the oldest. He was evil and he's dead. Second was Absalom.
Speaker: He was evil and he's dead. Third was either Kiliab, but he's also called Daniel. He has two names.
Speaker: We don't know what happened to him. He's not... He featured in the Bible, we're told he was born, and that's about it. So some people think maybe he died without having a wife and children.
Speaker: Some people think maybe he died young. Maybe he died of sickness. Maybe he was murdered. We we don't know what happened to him. Adonijah is son number four. So technically,
Speaker: by normal royal standards, he would be the heir to the throne.
Speaker: About that time, David's fourth son, Adonijah, whose mother was Haggit, began boasting, i will make myself king. So he exalted himself.
Speaker: So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers, military force. and recruited 50 men to run in front of him.
Speaker: That might sound familiar to you. Absalom had done the same thing. Absalom used to have men run in front of him like a parade. Absalom is here, Absalom is here, and Adonijah is doing the same thing Absalom had done.
Speaker: Verse six. Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time. Even by asking, are you doing that?
Speaker: So there's a pattern of behavior here. Adonijah has been very naughty, has been very bold for a long time, and never, not once, has David ever said Adonijah, Adonijah, Adonijah.
Speaker: Why do you do things that you do that I hate so much? That conversation has never taken place.
Speaker: Adonijah had been born next after Absalom and he was very handsome. All right.
Speaker: Let's give David a little bit of grace. It's not an excuse, but a little bit of grace. David's relationship with his father was not good. If you remember ah year ago, when we looked at 1 Samuel 16, Jesse, David's dad, threw a big family barbecue and invited everyone.
Speaker: Apart from David. He said David was the runt of the family. That means he's the youngest. And the least important.
Speaker: Imagine having a family, having lots of kids, eight sons and and daughters. And you literally have not only a least favorite child, but you have a child who is the least important.
Speaker: He'll never accomplish anything. He'll never make any money. He's waste of space. their relationship was bad. And we know that David had a good relationship with his mother. Now, historians debate who his mother was. did Jesse have one wife? Did he have two?
Speaker: he have her another woman on the side? What are adultery? Historians have different ideas. But in Samuel 86, 16, sorry, that's wrong. There is no Samuel 86.
Speaker: In Sam's 86, 16. eighty six sixteen And Sam's 116, 16.
Speaker: sixteen David refers to his birth mother, whoever she was, as the Lord's maid servant. as the Lord's servant. So he obviously had an emotional connection with his mother.
Speaker: He did not have a good relationship with his father. So you see here issues that David and Jesse had,
Speaker: they trickle down to the next generation. They impact the next generation. That is where generational curses of division need to be broken.
Speaker: Because what happened in one will happen in the next.
Speaker: So Adonijah creates the image that he's the king. He has chariots and charioteers. He's got 50 men running in front of him. He looks like a monarch.
Speaker: He looks like a celebrity. um In most monarchs, the heir, it's hereditary. The line of succession, know, the firstborn male becomes the king, or the firstborn becomes the ruler.
Speaker: Not in Israel. In Israel, yes, bloodlines are important, but God's determination, God's decision is more important. He's not looking for God's opinion. This is a coup d'etat. He's putting himself...
Speaker: in that kingly role, he wants all that attention on himself, regardless of God's opinion. And here's the thing. He has help.
Speaker: Verse seven.
Speaker: Adonijah took Joab, son of Zeruiah, David's commander, and Abiathar, the priest, into his confidence.
Speaker: And they agreed to help him become king.
Speaker: They have a relationship. They have a connection. This has been planned. Hey, so, you know, my dad's sick. He's dying. He's not going to get better. Now, all the prophecies Solomon, my younger brother, is going to be the king. i mean, the son of Bathsheba. But me, I mean, I am the fourth son and the first three are dead. So, you know.
Speaker: And they're like, yeah, okay. like clapping seals and he has strong support in his favour.
Speaker: Brendan! You've made some!
Speaker: I hadn't actually planned on doing that. but The seal clap was not in my notes. It's hard to be. It's hard to be. But... But...

Speaker: I like reactions. Good. laughing Laughing's okay. We should be joyful in the presence of the Lord now.
Speaker: So verse 7. Adonijah took Joab, son of Zeruiah, and Abathar the priest into his confidence, and they agreed to help him become the king. Verse 8.
Speaker: But Zadok the priest... Benaiah son of Jehoiada. That's Joab's replacement. Benaiah got Joab's job as the chief military commander. Nathan the prophet.
Speaker: Shimi, Rhi, and David's personal bodyguard refused to support Absalom. There's a split.
Speaker: You've got some people in very powerful positions who pro-Adonisian. Did I say absolutely my mistake? Adonijah. And then you have other members of the court in high up trustworthy positions who say over my dead body.
Speaker: That is not happening. Not a chance.
Speaker: Verse nine. Adonijah went to the stone of Zohelet near the spring of Enrogel. where he sacrificed, so it looks very holy, where he sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves.
Speaker: He invited all his brothers, the other sons of King David, and all the royal officials of Judah. But he did not invite the people who disagreed with him, Nathan the prophet, or Benaiah, or the king's bodyguards,
Speaker: or his brother Solomon. Very, very telling. That shows us he knew the prophecies about Solomon, and he was not going to invite Solomon, prophets who prophesied Solomon's kingship, or other members of David's court who were pro-Solomon.
Speaker: I have to ask, is split the same, kind of same, I mean, I am talking about two English words, a R split and division, I can't pronounce it. The kind of same? Does they the same thing? Yeah, exactly. and You're right. They both show that a people have a difference of opinion a and there's a tension or a hostility growing between the two groups.
Speaker: Yeah. Okay.
Speaker: So he's just declared himself the king. And here's the thing. He makes it look very holy. There are sacrifices of animals at a place relevant to their history. He makes it look like it's holy. He makes it look like God's plan is all over this. God's hand is all over this.
Speaker: But it is theft. He is trying to steal a throne. And here's the thing. David's still alive. And this is something God really showed me this week.
Speaker: David is the king in the era of two kings. Not second king, the book, and the Bible, but two kings. You have Saul, the king with the crown, and David, the king with the anointing.
Speaker: Then Saul dies, and his son is like, I'm the king now. And you still got David running around with the anointing. David has the crown and the anointing.
Speaker: And Absalom has the palace and the concubines. And they have sex on the roof.
Speaker: yes i I saw like a lady... Well, I didn't see it. I saw a photograph of Lady Gaga doing something similar on a boat once. This is Absalom sleeping with his father's concubines. That's just gross.
Speaker: Absalom dies. And then Sheba is like, I am the king and I will kill David. And David's still the king. And now David is dying and his son has called himself a king. David is a legitimate king, an anointed king in an era of two kings where there's always someone else who wants to cry.
Speaker: And that is related to the prophetic narrative I'll be teaching on next week. Who is David in the 21st century? You will see. Verse 11.
Speaker: Then Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, and asked her, haven't you heard that Haggit's son Adonijah has made himself king and our Lord David doesn't even know about it? Which makes sense. The guy is sick in bed with a virgin concubine.
Speaker: If you want to save your life, And the life of your son Solomon, follow my advice. What is Nathan saying? Adonijah knows the prophecies about Solomon.
Speaker: He does not like those prophecies. He's calling himself a king. And he's invited 99% of his brothers. He is going to murder Solomon the first chance he gets. That's what Nathan the prophet is saying.
Speaker: Verse 12, if you want to save your own life and the life of your son Solomon, follow my advice. Verse 13, go at once to King David and say to him, my lord the king, didn't you make a vow to me and say, your son Solomon will surely be the next king and will sit on my throne.
Speaker: Why then Adonijah become king? And while you are talking with them, I will come and confirm everything you've said. So Nathan saying Bathsheba, you're his wife, you go first.
Speaker: Then I'll go and I'll just repeat what you said.
Speaker: Verse 15. So Bathsheba went into the king's bedroom. He was very old now and Abishag was taking care of him. That must have been weird. Bathsheba's his wife, and she walks in and sees him in bed with a woman like one-third his age. That must be... Yeah, that's but strange.
Speaker: Bathsheba... Well, maybe she was in bed. Maybe she was putting a cloth on his forehead. I don't know. Bathsheba bowed down before the king. What can I do for you?
Speaker: He asked her. She replied, My lord... I don't know why she sounds so young. She's probably in her 50s or 60s as well. My lord, you have made a vow before the Lord your God when you said to me, your son Solomon will surely be the next king and will sit on my throne.
Speaker: But instead, Adonijah has made himself king. And my lord the king does not even know about it. This woman has sass.
Speaker: He has sacrificed many cattle, fattened calves and sheep. And he has invited all the king's sons to attend the celebration. He also invited Abiathar the priest and Joab, the commander of the army.
Speaker: But he did not invite your servant Solomon.
Speaker: And now my lord the king, all Israel is waiting for you to announce who will become king after you. If you do not act, my son Solomon and I will be treated as criminals as soon as my lord the king has died.
Speaker: So Bathsheba knows very, very well that his plan is to erase her because a she is Solomon's mother and Solomon because everyone knows the prophecy that's on Solomon's life and Adonijah is actively working to do the exact opposite of the prophetic word of God. am not saying that Adonijah is their Antichrist,
Speaker: but he is an Antichrist. Solomon had the seed of life in him. Solomon is in Jesus' ancestry.
Speaker: Adonijah is trying to kill the seed of life that Jesus would come from. He's trying to sabotage the ultimate redemption plan of God. He's not their Antichrist. He is an Antichrist.
Speaker: Verse 22. While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. The king's officials told him, Nathan the prophet is here to see you.
Speaker: Nathan went in and bowed before the king with his face to the ground. Nathan asked, My lord the king, have you decided that Adonijah will be the next king and that he'll sit on your throne?
Speaker: Today he has sacrificed many cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. And he has invited all the king's sons to attend the celebration. He's literally saying the exact same thing as Bathsheba.
Speaker: He also invited the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. They are feasting and drinking with them. Now, look at this. This was a sacrifice a few paragraphs that ago. was very holy.
Speaker: Now it's a feast. Now it's a party. So basically, it's his own coronation party. But he's trying to make it look religious. It's a sinful, revelous gathering But he's trying to make it look holy. He's trying to make it look like God is in this.
Speaker: And they're shouting, long live King Adonijah. But he did not fight me. Or Zadok the priest. Or Benaiah.
Speaker: Or your servant Solomon. Has my lord the king really done this without letting any of his officials know who should be next king? It's a rhetorical question. I deny to know the answer. Sorry.
Speaker: Nathan knows the answer is no, I did not decide on this. Verse 28. King David responded, call Bathsheba. So Bathsheba went in and spoke to him.
Speaker: Nathan arrived. She left. Nathan said the same thing as her. And now she's coming back in again. So as she came back in and stood before the king.
Speaker: And the king who repeated his vow. As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every danger. Underline it, circle it, highlight it.
Speaker: Next time you are praying into the Lord, call him that. Lord Jesus, who has rescued me from every danger. i need help again.
Speaker: Lord Jesus, who has rescued me from every danger. Thank you that you are so good. Lord Jesus, who has rescued me from every danger.
Speaker: Bless my next door neighbors with what they're going through right now. That's an amazing title for Lord.
Speaker: Your son Solomon will be the next king and will sit to my throne this very day. David is abdicating the throne. He's not putting it off. He's not hesitating. He's not reluctant. He's being decisive, making a decision.
Speaker: Just as I vowed to you before the Lord, the God of Israel. Verse 31. Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground before the king and exclaimed, May my Lord King David live forever.
Speaker: While he's on his deathbed. But he'll be resurrected in the future. It's fine. And then he will live forever. Verse 32. Then King David ordered, Call Zadok the priest.
Speaker: Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the army commander, Joab's replacement. When they came into the king's presence, the king said to them, take Solomon and my officials down to Gihon spring.
Speaker: Solomon is to ride on my own mule. There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel.
Speaker: All right, this is verse 34. look at this one closely there is the doc the priest and nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over israel everyone put on your prophetic hats there is a picture of jesus in verse 34 can you find it what's the picture of jesus in verse 34
Speaker: I'll give you 10 seconds.
Speaker: i did read it ah in Finnish and I couldn't perceive it. Okay. The priest, the prophet, the king of Israel.
Speaker: They are the three titles of Jesus. ah He's the priest of God who makes intercession for us. Luke of Hebrews.
Speaker: When he was on the earth, what did people call him? The prophet, the prophet, the prophet, the prophet, the prophet, the prophet, the prophet, which is true. He was prophesying all the time. know And he was born to be the king of Israel. They did not want him.

Speaker: And may he make Solomon's reign even greater than yours.
Speaker: In some ways that happened. Spiritually, no. No.
Speaker: So Zadok the priest, Naaman the prophet, Benaiah son Jehoiada, and the king's bodyguard, took Solomon down to Gihon Spring. Solomon riding on King David's own mule.
Speaker: All right, there are two things i want to talk about in verse 38.
Speaker: First, Gihon Spring. What is a spring? It's a source of water. Where there is a source of water, you will have many people,
Speaker: because people need water to survive. So that's a very strategic place to go to. When they declare, long live King Solomon, god has chosen King Solomon, there will be lots of people around to hear it. That's good strategy.
Speaker: Then we have a mule. Ride King David's mule. What is a mule? A mule is when you get a horse and you get a donkey And you slap them together.
Speaker: Sexually. Now, that was not done in ancient Israel. In Leviticus 1919, crossbreeding animals was not allowed as forbidden.
Speaker: So this mule was not an Israeli animal. It had to be imported. So most people in ancient Israel would have had donkeys.
Speaker: You had to be royal and rich to have a mule.
Speaker: Verse 39. There Zadok the priest took the flask of olive oil from the sacred tent, the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon with oil.
Speaker: Then they sounded the ram's horn, and all the people shouted, Long live King Solomon. And all the people followed Solomon into Jerusalem, playing feuds, flutes, and shouting for joy.
Speaker: The celebration was so joyous and noisy that the earth shook with the sound. Wow.
Speaker: Spiritual, worship-filled, praise-filled vibrations.
Speaker: That's why we worship for an hour before we pray or have communion or share testimonies. The teaching begins. Because in the supernatural realm, the kingdom of the sea, kingdoms in the clouds, kingdoms on the earth, they will vibrate and react with the praise and the worship of God's people.
Speaker: Verse 41, Adonijah and his guests heard the celebrating and shouting just as they were finishing their banquet. Their dinner party was coming to an end and suddenly there's a new party happening somewhere else.
Speaker: When Joab heard the sound the ram's horn, he asked, what's going on? Why is the city in such an uproar? What's happening?
Speaker: And while he was still speaking, Jonathan, son of Abiathar the priest, arrived.
Speaker: Adonijah the priest said to him. For you are a good man. Sorry, Adonijah said to him. For you are a good man. You must have good news. If you're coming, running, and you're sweating, I assume you're here to tell me something good about myself.
Speaker: Not at all, Jonathan replied. Our Lord King David has just declared Solomon king.
Speaker: Hold on. yet Sorry, I have to ask because I was wondering this before I was reading. So this is not the same Jonathan. ah okay No, no, no. Jonathan Saul's son is long dead.
Speaker: This Jonathan is the son of the priest. Think back to To when Saul was hunting David. Wanted to kill him.
Speaker: And David went to hide with some priests. And the priest gave him the sword of Goliath. And some food. Saul came. All those priests were murdered.
Speaker: There was one survivor. Abiathar. That Abiathar. Became David's priest. He is now team Adonijah.
Speaker: Abiyadar has a son, that son is Jonathan.
Speaker: Why did Abiyadar is a side of, oh I don't see this guy. That's good question. It's a good question.
Speaker: But you know what, think of in politics today. Mm-hmm. You could have, like, you know, I would hope that every Christian is a conservative and not a degenerate liberal, you know, killing babies and promoting the alphabet community um and, you know, human trafficking.
Speaker: um Let's a assume every Christian is a conservative. You can have 20 conservative Christians in a room. but they will still have their own preference for who should be the leading politician, prime minister, president, king, depend whatever the country is. Some will say, oh, but this one is amazing and they're so good and look at their policies.
Speaker: and This one will say, yeah, but the country is bankrupt. This one will help us to save money This one, maybe he committed adultery five times, but he's promising to remove income tax. We'll all be richer.
Speaker: This one, i don't like all of his policies, but at least his policies have worked in the past. He's a proven track record. He's been the only good politician for 20 years.
Speaker: One group, technically all good people. Oh. But they all have their own preference. But the problem is all of these men know that God's word is on Solomon.
Speaker: God's hand and is on Solomon. God's prophecy is directed at Solomon. Every single one of those leading men knows this. And yet, Adonijah is the beautiful one.
Speaker: Adonijah is technically the next in line if we only go by birthright. Adonijah is the one who's currently popular because he has probably paid men to run in front of him and the chariots and the charioteers. So there's the pomp.
Speaker: there's It's is the popular thing. He's showy. There's a great image. It all looks very colorful. It all looks great on Instagram. That's who he is.
Speaker: And they're willing to ignore the prophetic word of God in order to and to to look popular, current, relevant.
Speaker: ah it's It's pretty shocking, actually. there There is... We can imagine what was going through their heads, but there is no excuse.
Speaker: It's quite the best way to put it. You know? Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: But look, people the Bible were crazy and people today are still crazy. That's the reality of this. You know? People have not changed. People are crazy as long as we are home. We go home.
Speaker: That's exactly it. We're heavenly home, precisely.
Speaker: ah Verse 45. And Zadok and Nathan have anointed him at Gihon Spring as new king. They've just returned and the whole city is celebrating and rejoicing.
Speaker: That's what all the noise is about. What's more, Solomon is now sitting on the royal throne as king. and all the royal officials, apart from everyone at this banquet, have gone to King David and congratulated him, saying, May your God make Solomon's fame even greater than your own. And may Solomon's mane be even greater than yours.
Speaker: it was, but not spiritually. Then the king bowed his head in worship as he lay in his bed. And he said, Praise the Lord, God of Israel, who today has chosen a successor, and he's still shivering, to sit on my throne while I'm alive to see it.
Speaker: Verse 49.
Speaker: Then all of Adonijah's guests jumped up in panic from the banquet table and quickly scattered. They were gone. Adonijah was afraid of Solomon.
Speaker: So he rushed to the sacred tent, the tent of meeting, the tabernacle, and he grabbed the horns of the altar. Okay, this is a bit strange.
Speaker: In Exodus 21, 14. twenty one fourteen The Old Testament law said if someone is a murderer or they have murder in their heart, even if they are at the altar, they can still be put to death.
Speaker: Now, sometimes you read Old Testament laws and you think, what why what what why god why? Why is that in there? Why was that necessary? Seriously. That's because this was not...
Speaker: a god practice, this was a pagan practice. In monarchies in the ancient world, it was normal that if you ran to a religious altar, you would have sanctuary from justice or vengeance.
Speaker: It's oh, I'm in a holy place, you can't kill me, so fair. I ran faster than you ran, sorry. That was the mentality here. So the Old Testament law said, if you're a killer,
Speaker: Or you want to kill someone and he wants to kill Solomon.
Speaker: Hiding in a religious place will not save you. You literally wanted to kill God's prophesied king in the ancestry of Jesus. You wanted to stop Jesus being born.
Speaker: This will not save This will not rescue you. But he's doing this because he's godless. He's doing this because he's living like a pagan. He's doing this because this is normal in all the Godless nations. a Verse 51.
Speaker: Word soon reached Solomon that Adonijah had seized the horns of the altar in fear and that he was pleading, let King Solomon swear to today that he will not kill me.
Speaker: Verse 52. Solomon replied, suppose he is my brother. Suppose we are family. ah Suppose it's my first day as king. Maybe I shouldn't kill my brother.
Speaker: If he proves himself to be loyal, not a hair on his head will be touched. That's a big if. I will show him grace. I will show him mercy.
Speaker: The law of God says I can deal with this, but I will choose not to if he behaves, if he repents, if he relents. But if he makes trouble,
Speaker: He will die. So King Solomon summoned Adonijah and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed respectfully before King Solomon. It doesn't say he was respectful. It says he bowed respectfully. It's a performance.
Speaker: He dismissed him saying, go home.
Speaker: First Kings chapter two, verse one.
Speaker: As the time of King David's death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon.
Speaker: I am going where every everyone on earth must someday go. Shale the grave. It's got paradise, it's got hell. David is obviously going to paradise.
Speaker: I love this. 21st century blokes need to know this. Take courage and be um man I feel like sending that to everyone on my phone who has XY chromosomes.
Speaker: ah Take courage and be a man. Because a lot of men today are not men. Or no, they're not manly. Observe the requirements of the Lord your God and follow all his ways.
Speaker: Keep the decrees, commands, regulations and laws written in the Law of Moses. so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. If you do this, again, f he didn't, then the Lord will keep the promise he made to me.
Speaker: He told me, so God told David, if your descendants live as they should, they didn't. And follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, they didn't.
Speaker: One of them will always sit on the throne of Israel. That does not happen because they didn't. A lot of people say, oh, but that's true. That happened. And and it's Jesus. No, Jesus is on his throne in heaven.
Speaker: And he should be on the throne of your heart as well. The reason he is not sitting on the throne of Israel is because Solomon could not follow that instruction. And Solomon's kids and grandkids and great-grandkids also disobeyed.
Speaker: Verse 5. And there is something else. You know what Joab, son of Zeruiah, did when he murdered my two army commanders? Whenever someone was about to get Joab's job, he killed them.
Speaker: Benaiah survived. Abner, son of Ner, he worked for Sol, he was going to turn to David's side. And Amasa, son of Jether.
Speaker: He was going to get Joab's job after Absalom's death. But again, Joab killed him. He killed him in and my wooden spoon and sermon.
Speaker: He pretended, though Joab pretended it was an act of war. But it was a time peace.
Speaker: Staining his belt and sandals with innocent blood. Do with him what you think best.

Speaker: He still genuinely believes he's the best man for the job. What is it? She asked. He replied, speak to King Solomon on my behalf, for I know he will do anything you request. i mean, hello these guys are brothers, but he's intentionally going to Solomon's mother because he wants to make it look less direct.
Speaker: Ask him to let me marry Abishag, the girl from Shunem. So basically, Abishag is the young virgin concubine. who would sleep next to David for medical reasons to make him feel warm when he was 70 and dying and very, very cold.
Speaker: Atenasia, out of all the women in the kingdom, wants to marry this one. Now, this is not a love story. This is a political power play.

Speaker: And we know that because of what he said. He literally says, the kingdom was rightfully mine. All Israel wanted me to the king. The tables were turned and of God had a different opinion.
Speaker: But even today, when I'm talking to someone, sometimes people want me to pray for them or they want help want advice or they want money or they want to waste my time, whatever it is.
Speaker: I listen. I have one mouth. I have two ears. Most of us do. So I listen to what they say. I listen to what they don't say. Because if you listen to what people say and you really listen to what they say, they will expose themselves.
Speaker: They will expose the thoughts and intentions of their heart. He's exposing the intentions of his heart. The kingdom was rightfully mine and I still want it.
Speaker: And if I get it, I'll be popular. The whole country will agree. Abiathar probably still talks to this guy. Joab is probably still in favor of him.
Speaker: And he's thinking, if I can get my father's widow, effectively, and remove Solomon, I can get the throne back.

Speaker: How can you possibly ask me to give Abishag to Adonijah? King Solomon demanded. You might as well ask me to give him the kingdom. Why? Cully knows what's happening.
Speaker: Adonijah wants to look like the young David. They even have the same women in their bed.
Speaker: You know that he's my older brother. and that he still has Abiathar the priest and Job son of Zeruiah on his side. They are still team Adonijah even now.
Speaker: Then King Solomon made a vow before the Lord. May God strike me and even kill me Adonijah has not sealed his fate with this request.
Speaker: The Lord has confirmed me and placed me on the throne of my father, David. He's established my dynasty as he has promised. So as surely as the Lord lives, Adonijah will die this very day.
Speaker: God wanted me on the throne. God has put me on the throne. God wants to bless the nation through me. God wants a savior to come through me. This brother wants me dead.
Speaker: So King Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada Joab's replacement as the ultimate commander in chief of the army to execute Adonijah.
Speaker: And Adonijah was put to death. Because Solomon had said Adonijah will let you live if you behave. Clearly he has no intention of behaving.
Speaker: Then the king said to Abiathar the priest who is also on Adonijah's side Go back to your home in Elithoth. You deserve to die.
Speaker: You're guilty of treason. But I will not kill you now. Now. Because you carried the Ark of the Sovereign Lord for David, my father, and you shared all his hardships, you were so good for so long.
Speaker: I remember that. i honor that. I appreciate that.
Speaker: Because you have a good past, you can go. But you are not part of Israel's future. You're not part of the future of my kingdom. Go home. Get out of my palace. Get out of my court.
Speaker: So Solomon deposed Abiathar from his position as priest Lord, thereby fulfilling the prophecy the Lord had given at Shiloh concerning the descendants of Eli. So a prophecy given decades ago has come to pass.
Speaker: Joab had not joined Absalom's early rebellion, just in case you forget, he was a goody. But he had joined Adonijah's rebellion. Peaceful.
Speaker: No one got killed, no one died, but it's still rebellion. And what is rebellion? It is the spirit of witchcraft. So when Joab heard about Adonijah's death, he ran to the sacred tent of the Lord and grabbed on to the horns of the altar.
Speaker: Joab is literally doing what Adonijah did one chapter ago. It worked one chapter ago. It ain't working twice. When this was reported to King Solomon, he sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada to execute him.
Speaker: Benaiah went to the sacred tent of the Lord and said to Joab, the king orders you to come out. But Joab answered, nope. I will die here.
Speaker: Probably hoping that he'll find sanctuary. Probably hoping he actually would in fact not die there.
Speaker: So Benaiah returned the king and told him what Joab had said. Do as he said, the king said. a self-fulfilling prophecy. If he said he would die in the tabernacle, he will die in the tabernacle.
Speaker: His word is his promise. Kill him there beside the... Okay, the Bible's a bit more graphic and bloodthirsty than what i said. Kill him there beside the altar and bury him.
Speaker: This will remove the guilt of Joab's senseless murders from me and from my father's family. The evil Joab has done is still in the earth.
Speaker: And if we tolerate it, at some point, we will pay the price of it. If we cover up his evil, give him promotions despite his evil, let him keep that position where he can do more evil, sooner or later, we are going to pay the price.
Speaker: That's not happening.
Speaker: Kill him.
Speaker: Verse 32, the Lord will repay him for the murders of two men who are more righteous and better than he. the guys David wanted to replace him with Abner and Amasa.
Speaker: For my father knew nothing about the deaths of Abner, son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa, son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah. So he's saying my dad was not responsible. My dad was not involved.
Speaker: May their blood be on Joab and his descendants forever. And may the Lord grant peace for forever to David, his descendants, his destiny and his throne.
Speaker: Sorry, his dynasty and his throne.
Speaker: So Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, returned to the sacred tent, the tabernacle, and killed Joab. And he was buried at his home in the wilderness.
Speaker: Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab. And he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar. So he's saying, Benaiah, you've been great.
Speaker: It's your job now. And he's saying, Zadok, you have been more faithful to me and my family than Abiathar. You're now the high priest in the country.
Speaker: The king then sent for Shimi. This was the one who cursed David and threw stones at his head when he was running away from Absalom. And told him, build a house here in Jerusalem and live there.
Speaker: But don't step outside the city of Jerusalem to go anywhere else. Stay where I can keep my eye on you.
Speaker: On the day you so much as cross the Kidron Valley, you will surely die and your blood will be on your own head. You cursed a righteous king.
Speaker: You spoke horrible things over him. You threw rocks at his head, trying to crush his skull. My dad lets you live, because you apologised. But now you're under house arrest.
Speaker: You're staying in the city. But if you leave the city, I will see that you're trying to escape, or you're trying to do something nasty, and there will be consequences.
Speaker: You're dead.
Speaker: Shimi replied, your sentence is fair. I will do whatever my lord the king commands. So Shimi lived in Jerusalem for a long time. It was literally three years.

Speaker: And you replied, the sentence is fair. I will do as you say. Then why haven't you kept your oath to the Lord and obeyed my command? Hello? Hello?
Speaker: The king also said to me, you certainly remember all the wicked things you did to my father, David. May the Lord now bring that evil on your own heads.
Speaker: Well, may i King Solomon, receive the Lord's blessings and may one of David's descendants always sits on this throne in the presence of the Lord. Well, that did not happen because of Solomon.
Speaker: Then at the king's command, Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, took Shimi outside and killed them. So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon's grip.
Speaker: Everyone who had morally dubious character, everyone whose moral principles were immoral, everyone in court who was morally bankrupt,
Speaker: Everyone who had been wicked to David and would, you know, his behaviour as a follower pattern would probably be wicked to Solomon. Erased. All done away with.
Speaker: It was a clean slate, a fresh start, getting rid of the filth, getting rid of the crap, getting rid of the treasonous people, and only keeping those who wanted a strong, unified kingdom.
Speaker: And then 1 Chronicles 29, 23. 1 Chronicles 29, 23.
Speaker: So Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him.
Speaker: All the officers and warriors, as well as all King David's sons, apart from Adonijah who's dead, pledged their submission to King Solomon.
Speaker: The Lord highly exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor such as no king over Israel ever had before.
Speaker: And after 15 months or so That is the end of the story of the life of King David.

Speaker: So Solomon dies and Solomon's son becomes king. But he's very selfish. He's power hungry. What Solomon does here, he's killing people who are guilty of treason.
Speaker: He's killing people who are a threat to his kingdom. He's killing people who offended his father with curses and violence who want to kill him. What Solomon's son does is he's hungry for blood because he's mean.
Speaker: he just says, I'm the king, so I get to be cruel. And for slaves, because back then if one kingdom beats another kingdom, you took people as slaves.
Speaker: um He says, you know, well, we're going to torture them. We're going to make their lives especially difficult. We're going to whip them. We're going to beat them. We're going treat them hot awfully. And because of his wickedness, the kingdom would then split the 10 pieces of the cloak, our 10 tribes,
Speaker: The remaining piece of cloak are two tribes. Benjamin and Judah became the kingdom of Judah. The ten tribes i
Speaker: which would be Reuben was the oldest of the kingdom of Israel. Simeon and Levi next in line. Issachar, all those. So ten and two. These ten would become The kingdom of Israel. So in David, the kingdom of Israel is 12 tribes.
