Introduction to Speedway Stories and Guest

00:01:27
Speaker
Welcome everybody to another edition of Speedway Stories here on the Nonsensical Network. um Hopefully everybody's having a good Monday evening. Me and Johnny got a special guest tonight, one of my rough truck friends. I'm going bring him up.
00:01:41
Speaker
Wes, here we go. What's happening, buddy? How you doing tonight, man? oh not too bad How about you guys? I've been hating this cold weather. Yeah, great.
00:01:55
Speaker
Definitely be back. so All right, guys, I'm going to give the floor here to Wes, let him talk a little bit about himself and motorsports. And you guys got any questions, hit the comments up and stuff. We'll try to get them answered the best you can. So I hope you guys enjoy the show tonight. Wes, the floor is yours, sir.
00:02:15
Speaker
Well, first all, want to thank you guys for having me

Wes DeVerry's Racing Journey Begins

00:02:18
Speaker
on. um As he said, my name's Wes DeVerry. I drive the orange Jeep, better known as his Grandpa Wings. Or Grandpa's wings, my bad.
00:02:28
Speaker
um Been doing it three or five years. Three years in modified. True modified. a Started my career in a stock Jeep. mar Ran two races.
00:02:43
Speaker
Ended barrel rolling at Hartford. Second race. And ever since then, I've been hooked. Okay. Hartford seems to be the yeah the notorious track for everybody to get their first row wins in anything with their rough trucks I've noticed over the years.
00:03:03
Speaker
Usually that's everybody's first place I've seen since I've been been in the scene.

Track Experiences and Challenges

00:03:08
Speaker
Yeah, was definitely my first one. Then my my, I guess my bad luck track is Knox County.
00:03:20
Speaker
That's a lot of people's, but even it's the it's the hometown track and a lot of hometown boys have a lot of issue with that track. It's honest.
00:03:31
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, me and Knox past couple years, we just ain't seen eye to eye. Busco transfer case than this year rolled it. So, yeah, we've we've had some interesting goes up there in Knox County.
00:03:46
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Then, of course, our good friend Brad likes Delaware County where he likes the Indo shit with with his stuff. so i mean that's that's his That's his track. He finally got Redemption this year on it. so i mean Kudos to him.

Motorsport Passion Origins

00:04:00
Speaker
um yeah so so my One of my main questions for ah that I got for you, man, what brought you into the the Rough Truck side of the motorsports and everything? What drew you in? What do you really like about the Rough Truck side of Of the motorsports side.
00:04:19
Speaker
Well. I started. How I really started motorsports. I started off mud bulking. Did that for a year. And. don't know.
00:04:31
Speaker
It was fun. For why i did it. But. There you go Wes. Where he's at at Lucas Oil Speedway. He's wanting to get a tough truck series going. There's your answer.
00:04:44
Speaker
There we

Thrill of Rough Truck Racing

00:04:45
Speaker
go. But anyway. Uh, what really got me in, I remember as a, um, how old I was, went up to the Fair Rough Truck, uh, local guy, so that was the track always got to go see.
00:05:01
Speaker
Uh, I can't remember the truck, didn't know driver at the time, it modified class. I just remember him breaking his front end and coming straight at me on the wall.
00:05:13
Speaker
I said, yep, I'm gonna do this one day. It scared that we needed to do it. not Not chicken out from doing it. actually It actually

Building and Modifying Race Trucks

00:05:22
Speaker
made you do it. Yeah. It's just fun, man. there's there When you line that truck up for jumps or you have crazy rides like I tend to have, the adrenaline, I guess, just gets into you. and You don't want to stop. Oh, yeah.
00:05:42
Speaker
I can vouch for that, man. Sad part is it took me took me almost 19 years before I finally got to time the time to come back this last season and actually get ah get a chance to race. And now I'm working on, I'm building mine.
00:05:55
Speaker
Me and the boys going to pretty much take turns driving, but I'm going to have it set up, caged, everything else. And I'll come play with the big boys. I may be under horsepower with a stock four liter Jeep, but I ain't scared to hang it out with the guys.

Skills and Vehicle Setup Impact

00:06:08
Speaker
Well, listen, my second year doing it, Well, my second slash third year doing it. I bought Tyler Peters' old Jeep at the time.
00:06:21
Speaker
I ran that. I ran that with the big boys. I didn't run stock last. Yep. Well, and the thing of it is, my personal opinion, and you can give your nerves on this, you can have the horsepower, but it's mostly what I see.
00:06:37
Speaker
I've seen a lot of these lot of these Jeeps out here. Dalton Irvin's a prime example when he was running. Those boys hung with you guys in the modified class, man. they Even though they ran some of the stock shows at the fairs, they hung with you guys in the top ten and shit.

Racing Community Camaraderie

00:06:52
Speaker
Yes, and they do, but there's other things going on than what meets the eye with some of those Jeeps now. We don't really talk about. No. That's that's the racer hush-hush. We'll leave it at that. Yeah. Yeah. yeah still But still, i mean if I mean, if you get a good setup, my opinion, um you and you got a damn good wheel, man, anything's possible on any given race day, dude. I mean, that that is one thing. And I know you can vouch for it, man, because you've seen it over the years.
00:07:25
Speaker
There are some of them out there that, you know, they don't have... The little extra shit, but man, they can hang. So, by my That Tyler Peters Jeep, I mean... I hung with them.
00:07:41
Speaker
I wasn't too far off of them. But eat some on these bigger tracks, you need the power. oh It's these smaller tracks that get muddy that... Those Jeeps can come back and beat us, modified guys, just because...

Monster Truck Show Experiences

00:07:57
Speaker
Short wheelbase. Too much power can hurt you sometimes. said do Ask Shorty and Dale about it. They know. ah so the the The white whale. The white whales got both of them a couple times in races where too much power in that white truck cost them in the long run.
00:08:19
Speaker
They overdrove the truck instead of under driving it with the horsepower that thing's putting out. So. You know you know that's the truth. Yeah, I mean, that's that's one of the crazier built trucks out there right now. ah I mean, you put a built big block in one of these trucks.
00:08:36
Speaker
Yeah, you're you're pushing some power. Oh, yeah. Well,

Family Influence in Racing Aspirations

00:08:40
Speaker
hell, half the guys, most of you modified guys, These trucks were, I mean, for the fair, yeah, but it was mostly built for when the Jamborees were big.
00:08:49
Speaker
You guys would hit that Jamboree series and stuff, and you had the long tracks where you needed the horsepower and shit to you race these things, and then the Jamboree fell out, and now they're trying to make it where it's coming back, and you guys have got the local fairs and monster truck shows now that you get to display your driving ability and have a good time, though. I mean...
00:09:13
Speaker
It's awesome to see that shit. I mean, I can't speak on Jamborees. Right when I got into it, I actually got the Jeep mod.
00:09:24
Speaker
That's when it died off. So, I haven't had the chance to experience the Jamborees. Now, I would like to. ah We're talking about it this year.
00:09:36
Speaker
Could be in the plans. Indian PA? If it works out. Yeah. I don't know if we're going to hit them both. We'll definitely hit one of them. Hell yeah, dude. That'd be awesome. um What else other motorsports-wise that you

Evolution of Race Truck and Personal Growth

00:09:52
Speaker
ah you like besides doing a rough truck game, man? I mean, if you had another motorsports to get into and we'll say an unlimited kind of budget, what would you end up doing? I mean, if it wasn't for modified rough truck racing, what would you get into that you'd want to do that's like a dream driving job or whatever? It'd be a dirt track cars.
00:10:12
Speaker
Either open-wheel modified or late model. Hell yeah. Awesome, dude. Hell um maya My grandfather, hence the name of my truck, he was a street stock driver and he actually helped run Coshocton Motor Speedway.
00:10:30
Speaker
so Really? Damn. That's showing my trucking age.
00:10:36
Speaker
Yeah. um So, yeah. I there i want to get in dirt tracks I also want you see my truck up for sale this year. i have recently taken it back down.
00:10:49
Speaker
It's not for sale as of now. I'm going to keep doing this

Balancing Work and Racing

00:10:52
Speaker
sport just because I see i was losing this spark for it. I want to transfer over into dirt track.
00:11:02
Speaker
Yeah, I've seen where you had it posted there for a little while, man. Right up up until the last couple races. Yeah, I made a decision there to keep it up had some stuff where i can see this sport growing a little bit more, especially now that I've been running with the monster truck shows.
00:11:23
Speaker
Oh yeah, dude. I can only imagine how that is. It's, it's fun. I mean, I got to run, uh, I got to basically be right beside Bigfoot for a couple of races.
00:11:35
Speaker
Um, I went up to Holmes County this year. i was the only truck, rough truck there. so They really liked having oh having me up there.
00:11:48
Speaker
Went to Columbus, Indiana with that show. They've never really seen a modified rough truck up there.

Community and Participation Importance

00:11:59
Speaker
They enjoyed it.
00:12:00
Speaker
They want me back. So that's probably in the plans for this year as well. Nice. What was it like running the Mount Vernon's Monster Truck Show, man? Since considering you already ran Mount Vernon, how'd that turn out for you during the Monster Truck Show? Did you do fair better during the Monster Truck Show than you did? yeah Yeah, I got my redemption. ni I ended up ah rolling it at the fair race, and I ended up taking first place at the Monster Truck Show.
00:12:25
Speaker
Now that's that's that's awesome, dude. Roll it on a Wednesday night, come back on, what was it, Friday night, I think it was, and get it in the first place. Yeah. yeah You had some with Brad and everything. I mean, you guys had some competition there for you, buddy. that I mean, those guys, you know they're no slouches, and you've been with them for these last two or three years. so Yeah, we had Tyler Peters was up there. He had some technical difficulties. Brad Me and Brad were in the finals together. Brock was up there. Dale and Jarrett were both up there.

Family Support and Truck Modifications

00:13:04
Speaker
Brad's your brother in the Bronco. archive I think Karen was up there too. Yep, and you had Karen. With her Jeep, man. I love her to death, man. she's the She's the grandma of the rough truck community, dude. We all we all love being around her. Yeah. Yeah.
00:13:23
Speaker
yeah um So, yeah yeah, I mean, the monster truck shows, I, you didn't see me at a lot of the fair races this year. Number one, it's hard to get there for me, working a full-time job.
00:13:36
Speaker
Right. um and There's some guys out here that own their own company racing these trucks. That's not... Or they got deep are they got are they got the work where they work at. It's got the deep pockets to let them the go do that stuff.
00:13:51
Speaker
Exactly. So, I mean, there's...
00:13:55
Speaker
There's guys out there with the money put in these strokes and it shows. We know who they are. um Yeah, and a few of them even what though, I'll have to vouch. couple of them that do have the money in them, I think they're pretty good dudes. They haven't done me wrong or nothing else.

Local Fair Racing Challenges

00:14:12
Speaker
They'll get their shirt off their back for most of us.
00:14:17
Speaker
But there's a few of them that I'd like to take out in the back woodshed honestly and smack the shit out of them sometimes. don't really have problems with any of the modified guys. hu We all get along pretty well. We kind of have to.
00:14:33
Speaker
Mine's mostly the stock guys that show up to the fairs that think they're God's gift. and The mod guys, we're all tight-knit family, always have been. I've been with the mod guys since day one that Knox County put the first fair, then up on the horse pulling track. So, I mean, I've known everybody that's been in the mod game and that's getting into it and stay close with all you guys.
00:14:55
Speaker
And i love the tight knit family we got, you know, I mean, yeah, we may have differences on some things, but in the end we are, we all help each other no matter what. I mean, that's the best part I love about motor sports community. It's not just rough truck.

Safety and Regulation Concerns

00:15:10
Speaker
You can get it into, uh, and everything else it's dirt track racing. You get it with the right group of people, man, a truck and tractor point.
00:15:20
Speaker
It just goes on and on. It's just, you got to find that right group. where they're not letting their egos get the best of them. Exactly. And that's one thing I can say about the modified guys.
00:15:33
Speaker
I mean, yes, we're competitive. That's not, I mean, that's just how the game goes. But if you're in a pinch, they're going to be right there helping you get that truck. Even if you're racing against them, they're going to be helping you get that truck ready.
00:15:49
Speaker
Can't complain about that all. i I've helped people out. They've helped me out. Like I said, i can't I love the family aspect of all motorsports. I've seen it through the dirt track side of it. a Rough truck.
00:16:04
Speaker
um Even mud ball. That's another group, guys. yeah Oh, yeah. That right there is another tight-knit group, dude. Yeah, it's they're definitely... they may be, you may end up with your, your, the family in there.
00:16:18
Speaker
Half of them are three sheets of the wind and the mud bog, but I'll tell you what, they're right in there with you. If you need a hand with anything, I mean that I grew up around that shit too, dude. And yeah, they, they will bend over fucking

Overcoming Racing Setbacks

00:16:30
Speaker
backwards to help you if you need it. I mean, they're right there.
00:16:35
Speaker
here And another big thing, uh, always throw out there is, well, my sponsors, uh, my family, it wouldn't be bo possible for Grandpa's wings to be out there like it is.
00:16:50
Speaker
I mean, we're making improvements every year. We're getting better. you can see, I mean, if you followed me from when I first got the truck, and I did it at Morrow County, until now, I mean, yes, I still got some rollovers.
00:17:07
Speaker
Yeah, but man, dude. little aggressive, but you got to. it i mean I mean, with the competition you're racing against, dude, if you don't live on that edge and take those chances, you you never know if you're going to be hanging with the you know some of the best.

Excitement of Rough Truck Events

00:17:28
Speaker
Ohio's known for rough modified rough trucks, man. I mean, Blankenhorn, Ray Skulls and all those guys. John Yoder, when he built the Jeep mod and stuff that you got now.
00:17:40
Speaker
Um, they put us on the map. So we kind of feel in the modified class, we still got to carry, carry that torch to, Hey, you guys want to come and play in our backyard and stuff.
00:17:52
Speaker
We're going to show you, you know, why we're still the, one of the best rough truck communities out there, out there in the Midwest. Exactly. ah i I mean, we went down group of guys. We went down to West Virginia, uh,
00:18:09
Speaker
one of the last races of the season, big group of Ohio guys went down there. Actually, it was all Ohio guys set for their stock crowd. Um, we had two stocks.
00:18:20
Speaker
I seen the pictures, man. I would have loved to see more videos. You guys look like you had a blast down there, man. I'll tell you,

Race Strategy and Performance Enhancements

00:18:28
Speaker
it was fun, but there, ended up taking a second up there. Uh, Al Varner beat me in the final round.
00:18:35
Speaker
um But, man, there's one corner down there, just a big old sinkhole about rolled truck, I think, twice that day. Because right in the turn, it's their mud bulk pick.
00:18:48
Speaker
Oh, jeez. One of the turns, it just kept giving out and giving out. So it was a big old sinkhole almost. oh wonderful. You got to love those. Yeah. know i mean It was a driver's course at the end of the day. So I took that corner.
00:19:05
Speaker
um But there again, we had stiff competition out there. Tyler Peters was up there. Dale. um Jared. Al.
00:19:17
Speaker
There's just so many a different things that goes into this sport that lot people don't understand. Like the

Future Racing Plans and Aspirations

00:19:28
Speaker
fairs, a they want to see us wreck. We don't want to wreck these trucks.
00:19:32
Speaker
No. We were having to big air. My thing is is, if you want to see the wrecks, the wrecks are where the stock class is at, man. I'm sorry, but that's the stock class is where all the breakage happens, especially when you've got the guys that don't got no shit. they they're They're just there to put the show on. That's what it's about.
00:19:51
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, is there wrecks in modified class? Yes. There's going to be wrecks in modified class, but we don't like doing it because it costs a lot.
00:20:04
Speaker
but and in the to fix these trucks. And especially when you guys are playing with your fiberglass composite bodies and everything else and that right there alone, let alone your drivetrain and everything else, but those bodies are not cheap to get replacements for.
00:20:21
Speaker
Especially like the one-off body, likes that's on my truck right now. um Yeah. I mean, it's kind of huge, huge of deep parts.
00:20:33
Speaker
Right. But I mean, it's still, it's just one of those deals. If you, like you were saying, you look at Al's truck, you look at Dale's truck. Those are those frickin' ball haul composite bodies, man. And look what Dale did at the Coshocton Summer Race.
00:20:49
Speaker
I mean, how it's held together with zip ties, but still. Dude, that made me cringe when I watched the YouTube video when he hit that pot hit that barrier. I was like, there goes $1,000 just for the front clip, part of the front clip. That was just the growth section, not just the news.
00:21:04
Speaker
I mean, mine has been... It's got zip ties riveted. I mean, it's it. My my body has seen some. How do I want to put it? Tough times.
00:21:19
Speaker
um Eventually, I want to get go different body on the truck, but trying to find the right body and where I want to go with it just hasn't happened yet.
00:21:32
Speaker
So, I mean, it's not going to stay a Jeep forever. Right. Xanthius, you need to get on the ball and get people in the chat, getting talking and everything, man. What's up, Paz? Thanks for tuning in, buddy.
00:21:45
Speaker
Johnny, you said you had a few questions you wanted to pick Wes's brain over tonight. Go ahead and hit him with a couple of your questions, bud. He should be able answer them for you, man. So, when it comes to rough drafts, right, the earliest thing that remember is Monster Jam, right?
00:22:09
Speaker
So, my question is, is this somewhere along the line similar, or is it more like a de demolition thing? We are not demolitioned. So, I mean, as far as a monster truck, rough truck goes, yeah I mean, that's, that'll never really happen again as far as Monster Jam, but we're more of a one truck at a time on a specific course.
00:22:37
Speaker
We're not trying to tear our stuff up. um Now, more or less what you're talking about, the Demolition Derby, is more autocross, which is happening at the fairs now. That's pretty much your stock vehicles going out there rubbing, racing, jumping. um not That's not what we do. um For second.
00:23:02
Speaker
What's your other question you had for him, Johnny? You got anything else for him? No, as far as the scene of it, those are the only two that I was first familiar with. So this is this is something new to me. I appreciate hearing about it.
00:23:14
Speaker
Yeah, what you're what you're talking about back in the TNT days of the U.S. Hot Rods, they had the monster truck show, and they brought in the what they're not.
00:23:26
Speaker
wasn't called tough trucks it was called arena cross is what they were doing but it's the same it's the same thing we do today with the modified rough trucks and the stock trucks it's on a on a course um wes has been to a few of the shows where it's actually side by side racing uh first one crosses the finish line dude is you know you move on ah on however many you got um How's the monster truck setup work with you guys running your on nose? Is it pretty much the same thing as like doing the summer race and stuff, or is it the individual fastest times? I've never been to the monster truck side other than Hartford, which is basically the fastest time, even though you run side by side.
00:24:09
Speaker
So with full throttle, we run it way different. So normally, depending on track conditions, like, A normal show will go first round this time.
00:24:23
Speaker
And then our first race. Okay. Then our second race is head-to-head. um Now, depending on truck count, how many trucks i we can get there, track condition, that can all change on the spot.
00:24:41
Speaker
But normally when you come to a full throttle show, you're going to see one timed event with the rough trucks and then head-to-head racing. Or Chicago-style racing we did once.
00:24:52
Speaker
Just like the monster trucks, where one starts on one end of the track, the other starts on the other end, you make a complete loop. So we do that as well. So, I mean, you never really know what you're going to see when you come to full throttle.
00:25:06
Speaker
um Like you said, Mother Nature plays plays a role in on what you guys actually decide to on race day. so yeah Yeah. And we're...
00:25:20
Speaker
with full throttle we're just out there putting on a good show we're not out there trying to break stuff we're not out there i'm not gonna say not trying to win but right i'm always trying to win that's just me but it's not it's not built around trying to break the trucks like some of the fair races
00:25:46
Speaker
you guys are You guys are pretty much โ€“ with that setup, it's kind of โ€“ would you compare that to watching the Jamboree style with you guys doing the monster truck races? It's basically you find out who the best of the best is at these shows if the weather's permitting, where you do the heads the head-to-head racing, or is it just up like qualifying times if the if the weather plays well?
00:26:15
Speaker
plays a factor in the ordeal.
00:26:21
Speaker
Is that that where it varies on what what they decide to do that year? Kind of, yeah. I mean, like I said, all depends who's out there. Like, me and Dale get out there, yeah, we're we're throwing caution to the wind. We're going out there. We're boarding our trucks. We're saying...
00:26:41
Speaker
Just what each other has. I'm going to get you guys goddamn Superman capes every time you guys race out there because you guys leave it out there leave it out there on the damn track no matter what, even though you don't have to. It doesn't matter. You guys are always out there givenvin it giving it hell, man.
00:26:58
Speaker
Get you guys Superman capes to fly off your damn trucks for you. Right. I mean... ah Like, when I went up to Holmes County, I was only truck up there. So, I kind of got to freestyle both my runs.
00:27:15
Speaker
Ooh. I bet that was fun. man, attracted myself. Now, granted, it was built for more of a monster truck setup. So, there was only a few jumps I could really hit.
00:27:27
Speaker
Right. But I went out there. I put on the show, and that's what it's all about. I like getting the fans into it. I like getting the kids into it. Like, when I'm at a monster truck are climbing in my truck.
00:27:43
Speaker
I take my truck to car shows, get the kids in it. I seen you posted about that, the local couple local car shows you took it to, man. That was pretty fucking badass to see that shit. I like that. Yeah, see, I... Because honestly, you go up to a pit party, you're not allowed to get monster trucks. You go to car show, you're not allowed to get into the car show.
00:28:03
Speaker
don't You're bringing your kids there. Let's give them something to do. boom climb in You're not going hurt that truck. Number one. yeah you something and Honestly, and that's one thing I like about when Tim's at Croton with the pit party with you guys, especially this year.
00:28:21
Speaker
Man, I lost count on how many kids was climbing in and out of all your guys' as fucking trucks. Dude, it was it was astonishing. It's like I got a picture on my phone where I went up onto the top pit side bleacher. Just all the families surrounded you guys.
00:28:37
Speaker
And I zoomed in and you could see couple of the kids. There was one in yours that I got a picture and Dale's where you guys were together. And you could just see the smiles on their faces. That's the thing. and My thing is, is if we don't rub elbows with these kids and everything else, man, our sport's going to die when they when they get older, dude. We got to keep the younger generation Going in, I loved it this year at the pit party, dude. That was by far Croton's best pit party I've been to since they've they've been there, man. This year was the best.
00:29:10
Speaker
See, and like a full throttle, I get there early. You don't have to, but if you're going to show up, I tell everybody to show up early. Get your trucks into the pits to let the kids, because, I mean, they flood.
00:29:28
Speaker
Of course, we got Bigfoot down there, too. so Everybody wants see Bigfoot. Oh, yeah. oh The iconic iconic monster truck that started it all. Nice. At Holmes County, Bigfoot was down in front.
00:29:43
Speaker
I was up on a hill right behind him. right I got up to know these monster truck drivers, too. Man, let me tell you. They're another group of tight-knit crew.
00:29:54
Speaker
If one of their trucks goes down, we're all back there trying to help them. Oh, yeah. Where was it? Oh, one that shows the shows we did. I can't remember where it was, but me and Jason Daniels where the two trucks showed up.
00:30:09
Speaker
And if you've never seen Jason Daniels run, that truck is next level. especially Especially this new one. Yes. oh
00:30:22
Speaker
He's going to be a tough one to beat. Yeah. I mean, I I went up against him up there in a time trial. and Yeah. it was Now granted we were racing on mud. and I was trying to overpower the track.
00:30:41
Speaker
Right. what was up against. But. Second run. Sometimes. you know Not all the power in the world gets you further.
00:30:51
Speaker
So less power got me further than trying to power. Just floorboard it. Like I like to do. But. Sometimes you are a smart.
00:31:05
Speaker
Well, I mean, that's the thing, especially when you're playing, it kind of changes your game stamp up when, Like in dirt track racing, man, if it gets a little too much moisture and shit, with even with these these trucks, even stocking mods, you guys kind of got to change your habits um a little bit. ah Just enough that it's going to help you or it's going to, like you said, it could it could end up costing man. You know, like you said, running in those soup holes just enough that it's just enough mud, it'll suck you guys in.
00:31:37
Speaker
Right. And I mean... Along with that, another thing that plays into our sport that I'm not going to say don't play into other sports, but it really plays into ours is we don't know.
00:31:55
Speaker
like We get to walk the track, but we don't know how our trucks are going react. We got look at these jumps. We got to make split-second decisions while we're out there getting ready hit these jumps.
00:32:06
Speaker
And you hit a jump wrong, it can be very bad. real quick uh for instance don't know if you've seen the video of guernsey county and what was it two three years ago where i nosedived the truck ended up in the concrete wall yep yeah i've seen a couple guys prime example uh next week i i'm gonna have brock on here and what happened to him because shockton dude was was It was just that little misjudgment that it can cost you, man. I mean, it's one of those deals because you got that, like you said, split-second decision coming to these tracks.
00:32:46
Speaker
And some of these tracks, these assholes build at fairs, dude, like you said earlier in the show, they just want utter destruction. And it's like, no, you guys have got tens and thousands of dollars Just in a chassis alone. Not including your drivetrain.
00:33:02
Speaker
Just in the setup underneath the those trucks to do what you guys do. I mean, another thing is your shocks.
00:33:15
Speaker
Man, if your shocks ain't set up... Like, I'm running a... So, me, Peters, Dale on the white truck. I think there are only three running...
00:33:27
Speaker
the style of shocks I am. Or no, Brock is too. Brock's got the same setup. You guys have got the same. You four has got the same. Because Shorty's the one that actually hooked everybody up with those style of shocks.
00:33:40
Speaker
Yeah, so Shorty got it started. Then I got a guy that bought Hellinger's truck.
00:33:52
Speaker
Oh, really? No shit. no shit So I got the shocks off that truck. oh But those shocks are a game changer.
00:34:03
Speaker
um just the I love them. I actually, what was it? think it was three years ago with coilovers. I actually got hurt.
00:34:14
Speaker
Had to be taken by squad to the hospital for sciatic nerve damage. Really? didn't know that. like Yes. So...
00:34:27
Speaker
We went went to the drawing board, tried a couple different coilovers. Last year, Harford Summer Show, prime example, coilovers were just too high, too stiff. I went over in the final against Logan.
00:34:42
Speaker
Yep. So last year, we went back to the drawing board, got deal on these shocks, and man, the guy that built these shocks.
00:34:56
Speaker
Second to none. i I cannot complain about him. He's helped me a lot with these shocks. So these style of shocks, since they're not like your coilover setups, which is, you know, common in yeah in the Jeep game, basically, um on the rough truck side, a lot of guys do the coilovers, everything on the Jeeps.
00:35:19
Speaker
Are these gas nitrogen gas filled or are they hydraulic style shocks? Yes. They're both. of both Oh, they're but all nice. So somebody figured out how to to utilize both aspects instead of just one certain setup. So our yeah so actually, coilovers are the same general setup. So you still, so every, like, coilovers are the bypass.
00:35:47
Speaker
You got oil and then your nitrogen. Okay. So both of them are essentially, you got both in there. But if you were to look at most your monster trucks nowadays, they're running not the same shocks, same brand of shocks, but they got more bypasses on them than got. Shorty's got more.
00:36:13
Speaker
But, I mean, that's just a game you play. right But, yeah, I mean, they're a game changer, dude. If you look those four trucks...
00:36:26
Speaker
and how they land compar earn land and take the bumps and jumps compared to coilover trucks, you see the difference. Oh, it's night and it's night and day difference. I mean, and me personally, ah as much as I hate to say it, I'd love to see old Bradley get a set of those because that'll make him even more dangerous because he's running the coilover king shocks.
00:36:51
Speaker
So, and it's... ah It's one of those deals. He gets a set like you guys are running. Dude, he's but he's right up there with you guys. I mean, yeah, he won the point series, but I'll tell you what, that'd make him even more dangerous than that mod he's got.
00:37:06
Speaker
Yeah, that was a good truck when he got it. And he's a driver, man. I mean, you got someone 20 years experience in this sport. It's hard to take guy like me with five or six years, try to outrun him.
00:37:20
Speaker
But, I mean, the thing of it is, that dude, I've been friends with Brad for a long time, man. And for him to make us basically what I call a stock Bronco, a full-size Bronco, do what he's done with that truck to step up now to the mod game like he has, it it just โ€“ It was done.
00:37:42
Speaker
I would just โ€“ He was ready for it. oh He was long overdue. He really was. He really was. But I would put him โ€“ you give him two or three passes in a truck and stuff, dude, I wouldn't be afraid to have him be my wheel man.
00:37:59
Speaker
You're one I wouldn't be afraid to have a wheel man. Dale, Tyler, Brock in his first year, dude, that kid came on the last half of the season. He finally got โ€“ he got that confidence, and, man, he was he was coming in. so But, yeah, it's โ€“ There's a lot of you guys. I wouldn't be afraid to build a truck, take your advice, build a truck the way you'd want it.
00:38:23
Speaker
And I'd be like, here, run it for me. I'll turn the wrenches for you guys, whatever. And you'd be my wheel man. I mean, there's a bunch of you that I wouldn't be scared to turn you loose in my, in my rough truck, the the drive it.
00:38:35
Speaker
You may break shit, but you know what? I'm not, I'm not worried about it because I know I got trust in my wheel man that I wouldn't trust anybody else with. So yeah. Right, right.
00:38:47
Speaker
So. I mean, and after I rolled my, or it was before I rolled my Jeep at Herford, I actually got thrown into Aaron Gant's Purple Ranger at the Monster Truck Show that year.
00:39:03
Speaker
Oh, the one Austin's got now that he's trying to sell. Yes. Okay. So, I had three races on my rookie year, i guess. Mm-hmm.
00:39:15
Speaker
But, man, that that Ranger stalled out on the start of Monomy, and hear Logan Ellis coming up behind you, and you just said, duck.
00:39:27
Speaker
That's interesting. I'll say that. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I mean, but, yeah, I got to race that truck. um That's when the bug really bit you for a modified, wasn't it?
00:39:40
Speaker
Getting to race something, you know, I mean, it still had kind of this, it's got stock drivetrake. but it was kind of set up semi-modified. Yeah, I mean, that got me, and then it was that, what was it, that following year, I think, raced Spencer's Bells black modified.
00:40:01
Speaker
Yeah, i shock I remember that truck. That was that was a contender, too. but Yeah, but I raced that truck as well. So, I've had my... ah I got some wheel time behind some trucks.
00:40:17
Speaker
Never really got comfortable behind them trucks. This year, we made some changes in my truck. and That's the thing. You're never going to stop making changes to these trucks.
00:40:30
Speaker
oh no a man Unless you're like oh one last shot where he just had that truck dialed. Travis, dude, that truck is just plain nasty, man. but You got to look at You got to look at the crew he had behind him besides him turning wrenches and driving.
00:40:47
Speaker
That Knight family, they are gurus in the off-road game, man. So, I mean, he had multiple knowledge years of knowledge to help him dial that truck in.
00:40:58
Speaker
But he knew he knew that truck inside and out, man. That fucker is โ€“ that was a badass truck, and he's a badass dude. I love Travis Stevens to death, man.
00:41:09
Speaker
He's a good dude. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, and he was another guy back when I was, you know, in school. I seen up out there at Hartford.
00:41:21
Speaker
Kind of broke my heart he had a Chevy motor in that truck, but that's besides point, I guess. Yeah, it is what it is, bud.
00:41:32
Speaker
I mean, as everybody looks at me funny when they see that Ford symbol in the front of my truck, but it's all Ford underneath. Don't let the body fool you. Hey, you and Brad are, I think, the only mod guys that are actually running true to the brand of the other than you having a Jeep body, but running true to the Ford regimen that you guys are diehard Ford guys. I think you are the only two that are running Fords.
00:41:57
Speaker
No, we got a who else? ah That white and black exploder. bra or no Is it Brock's friend? No, it's Cecil's friend.
00:42:09
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's right. one And then i' got Tyler Peters. Yeah, and Tyler. I forgot about Tyler. That's right. he he Yeah, I forgot about that. And then Stonewall, too.
00:42:23
Speaker
I miss that motherfucker. I i wish he i know he's he's enjoying his time with his grandkids, but, man, he's always a blast to watch driving, though. I love watching him drive.
00:42:35
Speaker
Man, like I said, this this sport... Is fun. I just wish we had more weekend races. I mean. I'm not going to lie there. that's that is That's the only downfall. With trying to be committed to this.
00:42:52
Speaker
Is. Like you. the you're I'm like you. Full time job. You want to commit to racing. But sometimes that job don't let you man. You know you got to stay over that. ah Extra time and everything else.
00:43:07
Speaker
It'd be nice. But it is. it's i definitely I definitely agree there should be more. And the other thing is fairs would actually listen to the fans and the drivers, a lot of these fairs would get their draws like Croton does on a Friday night.
00:43:27
Speaker
Right. If if if that they would honestly listen, what can we do to bring in the crowd? ah move it to a Friday or a Saturday, dude, and watch the entry. You guys will be lining your pockets with a mission, with the driver's fees, and the payouts would be bigger, and people would want to come more. When you're doing these Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shows, yeah, you get a decent turnout.
00:43:52
Speaker
Of course, Knox is going to get one because it's the Super Bowl of Rough Truck. It's what started this shit for the fairs. You're going to get the turnout for that. But look at look at Croton.
00:44:04
Speaker
They do Friday nights. Yes, it sucks. It takes until 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. But they have over 200 entries. And that place is packed until about midnight.
00:44:16
Speaker
That's one of the only fairs that grows that that many trucks. Yeah, because it's Friday night. Friday night. And, you know, for Lickin County, that's our hometown fair.
00:44:29
Speaker
I mean, Knox a lot of people's hometowns. It's not my hometown. My thing is, I will take Hartford Fair over any fair, and I've been to a lot of fairs in the state of Ohio.
00:44:43
Speaker
I will take that fair grounds, that fair board over any fair in the state, and I'd put them up against anybody. Honestly, fair-wise in the Midwest, the way they run their fair, run that grounds, the way they put on the events year-round, but just the motorsports side, the way they cater To the motorsports people. Is fucking phenomenal. Unlike other fairs.
00:45:08
Speaker
Right. i mean Honestly I wish Hartford would go back to their. Track that they had when I first started. Instead of trying to make all these changes to it. Making more of a speed track.
00:45:19
Speaker
I mean I like the four straightaways. you know Driver's track. I prefer a driver's track over a speed track. Myself. oh yeah no Don't get me wrong. Head to head.
00:45:30
Speaker
I'm a head to head guy. Hands down, 100%. You put me beside somebody, there ain't no telling what I'm going to do out there. I prefer end-to-head racing over any race. i I love it, and I wish some of these fairs that's got it um would include it in some of their summer fairs.
00:45:49
Speaker
ah Like Knox has got the space to do the side-by-side racing. I wish Croton, besides the summer race, would do it during the fair for you mod guys. Let you guys hang it out there like they do Lonnie does for the summer race.
00:46:03
Speaker
Show everybody why you guys are the best in the game. Let you guys go head-to-head instead of just individual. Right. But I like it i like i like the i like i still love Croton way they run it, though. I mean, it's fucking awesome.
00:46:17
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, the only issue with doing it fair night, if we did a head-to-head there, we would be there into Saturday. Well into Saturday. I mean, hell, we're already in there Saturday alone just for the single runs, let alone doing the Saturday. I'm talking about into the actual daylight.
00:46:37
Speaker
I mean, we'd probably be there 1, 2 o'clock Saturday starting at, you know, whatever time they start out. of Oh, yeah, dude. Yep. Yeah, that's true, man. But, I mean, it's, I love it. It's, it's one of the better fairs put together for rough truck racing, though. I mean, like I said, there's a few other ones out there that are close, but nobody will take Hartford's, Hartford's Motorsports Night away from me for rough truck racing. I mean, that's, that is now a great place. Now, uh, Shopton Fair Race, I like the way they did that. I was,
00:47:12
Speaker
When first got there, i was like, what what's going on? But then after running that track, I took fifth that night. you know I mean, the jumping out of that burn, that would just, you go back, watch the video. That was awesome.
00:47:28
Speaker
Dude, that's the best that track's ever been set up. Oh, yeah. I mean. That was a phenomenal, that was honestly one of your guys' for the mod guys, even some of the stock guys.
00:47:40
Speaker
That was a driver's track. oh yeah That honestly was. there were some Those stock guys, man, that dude in the full-size 1500, I was impressed that he did what he did to be number two in the stock class. and he fucked That track just worked.
00:47:57
Speaker
Oh, yeah. i mean that That was definitely a fun track. I wouldn't mind seeing that again. um i mean, the long jump there is fun. Long jump at Knox is fun. I wish Hartford would have a long jump, but Something about their insurance won't allow it.
00:48:15
Speaker
Yep. there's That's the other shitty part about doing these events that I'm actually battling with on my own for being a personal person is the event insurance, man. The hoops you got to jump through to they get the insurance as an individual instead of like a group party.
00:48:33
Speaker
that's just for another that's That's for another day, though. We'll talk about that another day. Yeah, but I mean. True all. Like I said, I mean, long jump.
00:48:44
Speaker
People like seeing the long jump. so I mean, if Hartford would eventually go to a long jump, would they get more people? I don't know because we're already packed out there.
00:48:57
Speaker
They'd have to add more stands. um But I think it would be a good candidate. It'd draw the people. It would. It'd draw the drivers. It really would.
00:49:10
Speaker
See, and that's the thing. but That brings back to if Knox would switch to Friday nights because everybody, the fare board always brags about the long jump of the rough truck.
00:49:21
Speaker
Friday night, you'd have 150 people there registered to drive instead of your 80. Right. bright On a Wednesday night. And you would have those guys. Lay it all on the line in those stock trucks. Just to hit that jump.
00:49:35
Speaker
Because that's a famous jump. in the In the stock world. Is Knox County's semi-trailer jump. But when you're limited. Limited because people have to either stay over work.
00:49:46
Speaker
Or they have to work the next day. They're not going to be there. Exactly. I mean. That's the only issue with this sport. I mean. Unlike some of these fairs.
00:49:59
Speaker
ah or trying to push this modified guys out, I wish they would stop just because we will bring up issues with the track. point like We'll say, like, hey, this is going to hurt somebody or something along them lines.
00:50:16
Speaker
But at the end of the day, it's not up to us. we We got race the track just like everybody else does. Right. we just want to see her everybody safe because unfortunately we've seen too many injuries over the past three years at these tracks way too many way too many and a lot of it's back injuries oh yes oh man oh yeah or drunk drivers oh yeah and they yeah we ah
00:50:50
Speaker
We almost lost a couple of good friends of ours the last two or three years because, oh, we're inspecting to make sure things work and they never check shit and they let somebody run one of the races that didn't have breaks and hit hit two of our good friends and put them out of commission for a while.
00:51:07
Speaker
And one of them, oh yeah. And one year, ah o one of them seen their life literally flash before their eyes protecting kids. They ended up underneath one underneath the vehicle.
00:51:21
Speaker
But yeah, ah that's one thing I will give Coshocton kudos for. I hate their pit parking, but I'll tell you what, dude. When they say they're going to inspect your goddamn vehicle for in the stock class, they inspect your shit.
00:51:35
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And off that's an all fares need to do that shit. I mean, you go to Hartford, they're another good track. They inspect it. I mean, you're not going to run a non-stock vehicle in their stock class, number one.
00:51:50
Speaker
they do their due jack du They do their best to try to limit that from happening, and they make sure you have breaks. You got to stop before you go on track, then you got to have Sheriff's Wade and Onion. Make sure you stop when you come off the track.
00:52:05
Speaker
Oh, yeah. They're right there. There's four of them, two on two on each side, man. But, yeah, other fairs need to take take aspect they say they inspect to make sure they need to dude it takes five minutes of your time or designate somebody specifically to look especially stock vehicles over these years i don't know how many assholes oh watch it i don't have brakes i ran into one of those guys at knox brad pulled me off pulled me back and said dude At least here we don't have to worry about people getting hurt. it so I said it's not the point, dude. He's driving around in the pits with this fucker with no brakes. andre
00:52:44
Speaker
My kids are running around here. Your guys' as kids are running around here. i said I don't care if I get kicked out for running or not. This asshole ain't putting people's lives in danger. I was going to say, isn't that a liability?
00:52:56
Speaker
Yeah. Then this is another reason insurance is out through the roof for a lot of these events. Oh my God. Because of idiots like that. Leave it to say, Needless to say, karma that night got his ass because the Jeep actually ended up not starting. So we didn't have to see him on the track.
00:53:12
Speaker
What happened to regulations and things for stuff like this? So, as far as what you're saying, um we all signed a waiver at the beginning of the night saying we're reliable for anything that happens.
00:53:26
Speaker
Right. So, I mean, yes, why but you would think liability is a thing, but Ultimately, it's up to the driver because we do sign a waiver saying, hey, our vehicle is safe.
00:53:40
Speaker
Right. Oh, I get that part, but it was just the point of, for me, it was the bragging about not having brakes. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's not that's not right at all. But, like, ah if we're going back to Knox County when one last shot wrecked, he had to pay for that side by side.
00:54:00
Speaker
Yep. And the hospital bill where the tire hit the hit the EMS. Yeah. So, I mean, we got take that into consideration when we go out there. And I don't, I didn't realize that when that happened with one last shot.
00:54:17
Speaker
That opened my eyes to it. So, I i definitely, I go through a checklist every time I get in my truck. Now, make sure everything's where it needs to be, how it needs to operate.
00:54:29
Speaker
I do test hits before the race. I mean, I made sure my everything's working right. A lot of you guys do that shit, man. And I mean, a lot of you guys, I i don't, how many times have I jumped in? Hey, I'm checking this to make sure, get underneath.
00:54:45
Speaker
I mean, look where you were having that break problem that one one time when I was at the fair. I was the only one at the time because everybody else was, you know, checking their shit out. So I jumped underneath, you know, with your dad and everything else to help you guys. I mean, that's what that that's what we're there for, like you said, in the community that I love. If you need the help and you're not busy, there's somebody always there willing to lend a hand.
00:55:09
Speaker
I mean, like i said, this board is definitely not for, I don't know how i want to put this. It takes a special breed to do this, like us modified guys do it.
00:55:25
Speaker
Yep. Oh, especially you guys. Especially you guys, man. I mean, mad kudos to all of you. I'm still, before the day I die, i'm I'm getting my ass behind a modified one way or another.
00:55:36
Speaker
I want one time at least. some walls Stonewall's for sale right now still. He's been messaging me. Come on, come off your moldy money. Come on, you know you want this.
00:55:48
Speaker
Damn it, man. Leave me alone. um I mean... If I had the money, i would buy deyne I'd buy Dwayne's truck in a heartbeat because I know what's in that truck.
00:56:02
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, if I was looking back, I don't regret the truck I bought. Oh, dude, you didn't go wrong with what you got, man.
00:56:12
Speaker
That truck was set up by the best builder in the game. Well, in my opinion, a very very much there ain't very much left from what he set up.
00:56:24
Speaker
I'll put it that way. Right, but I mean, you put your twist to it, but you can admit that We'll give a shout out to the dude because Jason Daniels built a hell of a toy. And then you guys, over the time frame, you set it the way you needed to set it up.
00:56:40
Speaker
Jason Daniels built that truck? Yes, he did. she Was that before it turned into the Jeep? Yep. Okay. so that was Daniels originally set that truck.
00:56:54
Speaker
That was actually one of Jason's three he had at the time he was working on. And then... John got his hands on it and stuff. And I think Adam and Ray helped him set that up. If I'm not mistaken.
00:57:08
Speaker
So from what I. From what I bought it from John. um I was told the Springstons were in on it. He was in on it. all All the main guys were in on it.
00:57:22
Speaker
So. And then. Looking at their. Next generation of drugs. So. Well, who has it?
00:57:34
Speaker
who Well, don't know who bought Preston's truck, but if you look at Preston's truck... That's Cecil's. Cecil bought Preston's truck. Oh, that's right. That's right. So if you look at Cecil's truck... That was Madlock's truck, and then Preston, after his couple wrecks... Yeah.
00:57:54
Speaker
but But if you look at them trucks, they're later...
00:58:00
Speaker
I mean next generation from my trucks, the chassis are completely different. um So, like, me and Brad were kind of set up the same.
00:58:12
Speaker
Yeah, you guys are almost identical, really. the Yeah. Height-wise, everything else. Yeah, so, I mean, if you look at these newer generation of trucks, they're set down lower, this, that, and the other, which they didn't know when they built our trucks.
00:58:29
Speaker
Right. Oh, it's been the evolution of modified rough trucks, man, has hey an availability now to basically build a mean mini pre-runner or a core truck is the endless possibilities is out there.
00:58:45
Speaker
Oh, yeah. what That's what those these are These next generations modifieds are. And now, is my truck working? Is my truck still a contender?
00:58:58
Speaker
Yes. Don't get me wrong. I am very happy with where my truck is right now. After the new motor, Shackleford's, one of my main sponsors, helped me with.
00:59:10
Speaker
I got lot of tire on. He's helped me with my tires. um Complete towing's jumped on with me. High-class grass. My buddy Aaron Gant. he's I use his trailer every race, pretty much.
00:59:27
Speaker
I love Aaron. I miss him at the rough truck events, especially driving. Oh, yeah. So, I mean, without these sponsors, like I said before, without the sponsors, I would be nowhere near where I'm at right now.
00:59:46
Speaker
It helps. The motor, that was this big game changer. um We went to a different transfer case, different gears. I mean, we we went through this truck. We changed the rear track arms.
01:00:04
Speaker
you came't You came to play. You wanted you wanted that you were going to be, like you said, you're committed to this. You wanted to be a contender, and you you knew what you had you had to do.
