What's up, everyone? I'm Jacob Rosland. I'm Annika Perlick. And welcome back to the Gains and God podcast. It's been a while. But we're really excited to be back. It's going to be a blast. We had, I think it was like a three week hiatus. So we might be a little rusty hanging in there with us. But we're going to have a lot of fun today. Summer Reflections

00:00:29
Speaker
Annika, how has summer been treating you? I guess we haven't been um in the booth. and in the booth like We aren't both in our bedrooms. In the booth sense since ah school got out, so how has summer been treating you?
00:00:44
Speaker
Summer's been great, you know, it's been a little rainy, which kind of sucks. So the weather hasn't been the best and in our favor, but it has just been um fun, you know, working right now. There's been a lot of fairs. It's been really fun. Hanging out with friends and seeing people in the community, you know, that's been really cool. But yeah, just super busy. So I'm glad we're here today finding time to do this. And Jacob's been off at camp. Hello. Do you want to share a little bit of that? Yeah, so I We're going on week seven at inspiration point um It's been a blast. So I've been I've been having a really good summer um working with some really cool people and Yeah, it's just so cool to see how God's been moving at camp like every single day every single week week in a week out and um Tiring
00:01:38
Speaker
Yes, rewarding. Also, yes. um So yeah, it's just been it's been an experience that has far exceeded my expectations. Like I've seen it would be really fun. But um yeah, there's just new adventures every day. um I've gotten to a lot I've gotten to do a good variety of stuff, learned how to serve joyfully, um which has been really cool. We've I've i've done a lot of dishes. du ah cleaned a lot of bathrooms. How do you like that? But also interacting with a lot of lot of really cool kids, a lot of really cool staff members. um So yeah, that part has been super fun. And you just you learn to have joy through it all, which has just been the coolest part of

Camp Stories and Miracles

00:02:22
Speaker
it all. So um I actually did want to start the podcast off with a story
00:02:27
Speaker
from camp. And it was actually from this last week. So um this past week, we had senior high campers there. And senior high is always a cool week because we stay up a little later than normal. um There's a couple different things that happen during the week. So that's like, it just is really fun. I think everyone at camp on staff looks forward to senior high weeks just because like, ah when there's like younger kids there, They obviously like go through hard things, but like the senior high have just been through um a lot more so like hard things and there are a lot more spiritually mature in some cases. um So it's just fun to be able to like pour into people that you can almost like, at least for me, like I kind of see myself in some of these people, which is really cool.
00:03:11
Speaker
So I enjoyed doing that. um The story ah I had goes with our podcast absolutely perfectly. So me and Annika had decided on this topic a week ago, earlier this week, and then we were going to kind of just think about it throughout the week, pray about it, um what we wanted to talk about. So ah the topic of this podcast is about praying prayer and specifically about praying boldly. um yeah So with my story from camp, we um do this thing called the Christ hike, which is a reenactment of the last couple days of Jesus's life on earth. um It's really cool.
00:03:46
Speaker
i a really powerful experience for all the campers. But then with Senior High, um we do this thing called Night of Worship, which is right after the Christ-like. All the cabins go and process what they just saw. And then um there's all these different stations that these campers can go to to just like process um the Christ-like on their own. So it's really cool. Um, I got the privilege to be, um, in the prayer room so then kids could sit down with me and I could pray over them. And that was just one of the, one of the coolest experiences ever. And honestly, like this was the highlight of my week for sure. The.
00:04:25
Speaker
just the coolest moment. So I was sitting in there. um The kids are told that like, if you go if you sit at a table with no one there, you can just pray on your own and no one will come up to you. But if you sit next to someone that's in the room, there was like 10 of us or so, um then they'll pray over you. And the first person that comes in sits down. um I was like, Hey, dude, like, is there anything you want me to pray about? And he's like, No, I mean, I don't know. But can you please pray for my friend? um Who like who was having a tough time processing the Christ Ike. He was really deeply thinking about it. And yeah, so we I got the privilege to just pray over him um and pray over his friend that was in his cabin. And it was it went like it went well. And then i was we prayed for a while. And then yeah, he left. And then I was just sitting there kind of reading my Bible. And and um and literally two minutes later, um the next person that sat in front of me was his friend that
00:05:22
Speaker
um And it was just the coolest moment ever. like and and we it was It was a very emotional, like cool moment that I got to have um where my prayer was answered immediately. I prayed that um this this friend would encounter Jesus and and ive And then like to like three minutes later, he came to me and like I gotta help him do that. like I gotta help him like like process what he what he's feeling. um And I just gotta pray that like Jesus would pray to him directly. like It was just the coolest moment ever. and like I remember like I was sitting there because i um the friend told me the name of this kid.
00:06:02
Speaker
and then And I was just like, I was praying for him like before he even got there. And then he just shows up right in front of me. I'm like, Hey, what's your name? And then he tells me his name. I'm like, this is the kid I've been praying for. Like I didn't know what he, who he was, but it was just like, Oh, I just made my entire week. So yeah, that was, that was a really cool thing. Like praying boldly for these kids, like, and praying boldly that things will happen and God will answer. So Annika is going to share with us the verse from Luke that we kind of based this entire podcast off like it was kind of our vision. It helped us with our vision for the podcast. So yes, take it away. Yeah. So in Luke 11 nine, it says,
00:06:43
Speaker
So I will say to you, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Oh my goodness, I just love that verse because it just shows God's obedience to us. And like Jacob said, when we have a specific prayer and we pray to our God, our Father, so boldly, He will answer us. And it might not always be the way that um Jacob's scenario played out.
00:07:19
Speaker
Where it's like immediate, it's right away. And um his prayer is answered. Every prayer is answered in a different way. Like it is so specific to our situation. It is so specific to um the individual itself. But it says when we come to God and we knock, and we seek Jesus Christ, it will He will answer. The door will be opened. Jesus is with us. God is with us. He is around us. He hears us. He knows our inner thoughts and our most deep thoughts.
00:07:54
Speaker
thoughts and it's so powerful that God just hears that and he knows our heart and our heart posture and our intentions behind every prayer and he is so intentional to listen to us and when we ask God he it's not always physical like in Jacob's case where he prayed for this interaction and the guy came straight to him and that was an answered prayer Sometimes it's just God's presence that is answered. We're asking for something and God either says, not right now, or he says, yes, right now. a It is always just, he's always there. He's always listening. So every prayer is heard and every prayer is answered in one way or another.
00:08:40
Speaker
Yeah, I think that was just like, honestly, like my example is just like, like, my, my prayers have been answered before. But like, that was just like, such a like, a sign like of God's obedience to me that was just like, it was like, yeah, like, like, thank you for praying for this kid, like, I'm gonna bring him to you now. And And it was just like, it was such a moving moment. But honestly, like, in that verse, it talks about knocking, like, knocking on the door, like, because like, okay, think about this, like, if you're at a house, and you knock on the door, like, one time, let's say like, and then the person might not come to the door, because they don't hear you. But like, it might take like nine or 10 knocks for them to finally be like, Oh, like, there's someone at my door. So that's what God is telling us to do. He's saying like, he's saying like, you have to keep knocking.
00:09:24
Speaker
um and ah and love your your prayer will be answered. He says it will be answered, but sometimes like he tells you to not give up after one prayer.

Interpreting Divine Signs

00:09:34
Speaker
um And I just think that's the coolest thing ever. like we can't We can't be ah satisfied with like um with giving up. like he He wants us to keep praying um until it happens, which is just one of the coolest things. so One of the other things that I want to talk about today was um praying for signs. So I think it's really easy to get caught up in like
00:09:57
Speaker
and praying okay, so this is this This is a kind of a funny thing to bring up after I um after I prayed that um This kid would encounter Jesus, but you have to be okay um with things not happening in the way that um it can work out in our brains because honestly like God's plan is so much greater than what we can um like even process in our brains that like something so simple as like a sign from God is like a like his works go so far beyond that which is so cool and like it just shows us that like praying for a sign is
00:10:36
Speaker
like such a almost elementary way to like to like break down how God actually works because he's working in so many different ways. um So I just want to read this verse. so It was from Matthew and honestly this stuck out to me um when I was reading it but it's talking about demanding for a sign. um The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him asking him ah to show him a sign from heaven. So the Pharisees and the Sadducees they were um testing Jesus because they He was taking over their temple. And he replied, when the evening comes, ah you say, it is fair weather for the sky is red. And in the morning, ah today it will be stormy as the sky is red with overcast. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky. You cannot interpret the sign of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign
00:11:29
Speaker
um But none will be given except the sign of Jonah and then Jesus left them and went away. So I just think that's really cool that like it talks about how like we can't interpret the signs from heaven because like it just goes so beyond our like are like limited mind. um And God is so creative in the ways that He will answer prayers to us. And like honestly, like the thing you pray for, um might not be in God's will. So then he'll answer it in a completely different way or he won't answer it and it will be a ah big blessing to you as well. So I just thought that was a really cool thing to talk about. Yeah. So they're going with that story, there is one point in my life, um not too long ago, I was praying for a sign and
00:12:13
Speaker
um If you know anything about me God likes to send me signs and like shows his presence through like butterflies and Cardinals and Every time I see a butterfly or Cardinal I know it's God trying to tell me something like either like the situation's okay or like in this specific um Situation I asked God um because I was going through a hard time. I was like Jesus show me hope send me a Cardinal if I should hold on to hope for this situation. If there's hope in this, show me a cardinal. And if there's not, don't send a cardinal. And this was like early springtime. So like, I didn't see cardinals very often. So I know it's like intentional. And so I prayed this prayer and it was a very specific and it was a bold prayer. It was like, Jesus, send me a cardinal.
00:13:04
Speaker
if I hold on to this or do I let it go and I um get out of my house and I see a cardinal it was the most absurd thing like I saw it was standing like right on top of this tree that's sitting right in front of me I'm like looking at it and this bird is looking directly at me and I'm like my jaw drops and it's like It makes it sound, and it like shakes in my soul, because ah and I'm like, oh my gosh, this is so Jesus Christ, like I feel it. like You know a sign is from God when you feel it inside you, and you're like, this is just God's power. like I can feel his presence like radiating off. like It is the most insane feeling in the world.
00:13:45
Speaker
But I knew that this cardinal was sent from God. I'm like, OK, God, I you're telling me to hold on hope. OK, cool, cool. And then I um take a drive and it was like 30 minutes later, I get out of the car and I look at my phone and my best friend sends me a picture of a dead cardinal on her doorstep.
00:14:24
Speaker
Hey guys, I'm replaying this back while we're editing this and I just want to say that asking for signs from God is not the best and but God sending signs is good because that's how God communicates with us and it's a blessing that we have a God that is in connection with us and can send us signs and wonders because he is the god of signs and wonders, but asking for those signs just shows a lack of faith and I just want to clarify that because I think I made that a little confusing in here. So yeah, I just want to clear that up.
00:15:01
Speaker
Oh my gosh, never once in my life have I laughed so hard because here I'm like, okay God, you're showing me a sina, right? Okay, cool And then and then it's a dead Cardinal and it's so random. She never sends me stuff like that Okay, like Cardinals don't really have a meaning in her friendship. So it was just the most random She's like, oh my gosh, look how sad this is I'm like, you have no idea what you just did. I have never been more confused in my life, but I think that's the beauty of prayer. He heard me. He heard me. I was like, God sent me a cardinal. He sent me a cardinal. Okay, I have hope and then a dead cardinal. All right, now I just have to trust God's plan. And that's honestly, at the end of the day, what the story was trying to tell me is like, girl, you can't ask for signs because right now I'm just trying to show you that I'm in control of your life and I'm not ready.
00:15:50
Speaker
right now to tell you what your life holds so you just need to bear with me you need to trust me I hear you so I'm sending you a cardinal to show you that I hear you but I'm also like showing you you can't know the full story right now and that right there is an answered prayer that was a bold prayer it started with a bold prayer of asking God like send me a cardinal and he did but it's also he wasn't ready to reveal the full story and that's sometimes what we have to expect in a relationship with God, he's not always gonna reveal, it he always answers a prayer, but it's not always what we want or what like it what he's trying, he's not ready to reveal it completely to us what um the future looks like for us.
00:16:32
Speaker
Yeah.

Healing and Faith Timing

00:16:33
Speaker
That's so cool. I don't know. That's awesome. And if you don't think that Jesus has humor, like, I'm sorry. That is the funniest thing I have ever encountered. Oh my gosh. I just sat there laughing. I could not believe it. It was hilarious. Yeah. And like, it's it's also easy to just like, Like our minds want to grasp onto something, but like faith, like you can grasp onto faith, but that's not something like tangible. Like a sign is like, that's why we pray for something tangible. Um, but then like God will show you like, like you just have to trust me, but like, that's hard for us to do as humans. So yeah, that that's a cool story of how to, how to be obedient. Um, and when we look at praying boldly, it's like,
00:17:27
Speaker
We're not called to pray these little like, like teensy little prayers, like to like, Oh, please help me God. Like God tells us like, no, like, like if you want something done, like, like knock and the door will be open and don't quit knocking until, until it's opened. So like, that's what I think about when I think about bold prayers. Like it's just, um, it's, it's powerful. Um, It yeah anyways the way that I've kind of wanted to shift this conversation Annika doesn't even know what I'm gonna talk about next because I just kind of wrote some stuff down that I want to talk about I actually had the chance to talk about this with some people at camp this weekend, um and its it was really interesting so um we we started talking about street evangelism and how it
00:18:14
Speaker
is like it is so cool to like encounter the like to just like um meet these people on the street and give them the hope of Jesus. um But one of the things that like kind of turns me away from it is um praying for healing. So I don't know it just like okay so um when I like when you're when you're praying over someone and they're like you're praying and you're like, do you have anything on your body that hurts right now? And they're like, Oh yeah, like my leg kind of hurts. And then you're like, God, i I pray that like their leg is healed um in your name, like, like heal their leg. Amen. And then you're like, well, how does it feel now? And like, I feel like in my mind, that's not the way that God works. I think that like,
00:19:04
Speaker
like maybe it's not in his will that his legacy old and if you're doing this a person that isn't a believer um then it could turn them away from Jesus because like what if they're like, well, my leg doesn't feel any better. like They just prayed over it. like Prayer must not work. like Jesus must not be real. So like I don't know. i just like It made me like kind of question, like like is this the right thing to do? like Because God does want us to pray boldly and God can heal. ah god God could heal someone's leg immediately if he wanted to. So does God want us to pray for that? I don't know. like I just was wondering what your your thoughts were on that.
00:19:39
Speaker
So that actually kind of reminds me, I forget if it's in John or Luke, but there's like, when Jesus came and he walked, that was his thing, right? When Jesus was on earth, he performed and showed his um authority. He showed that he was the son of God by those type of miracles. He showed who he was that he had that power of healing because he walked around right to town in town and he healed people he healed like the blind um the deaf the paralyzed like that's what god did he healed people who were sick and that reminds me um where i was going um luke or john i don't remember quite um i'd have to look it up
00:20:31
Speaker
But there's a story where there was the woman, she was bleeding for years. I forget how many years, but a long time she was bleeding and she was turned away by society. People did not want to be around her. She was like so um pushed away. Like that's how society was. When someone was sick like that, you treated them like garbage. And she was bleeding and she was in pain for so long. and she encountered Jesus and she was healed. And then that just shows like
00:21:06
Speaker
I don't know, there's there's times, and then there was like, i think I believe it was one of his disciples, I may be wrong, but he was um sick and he was in pain, but he was going around and like preaching to people of healing, and Jesus would not heal him quite yet. He was like, please help me, heal me. And Jesus was like, dude, I can't, like you are reaching people right now. You don't understand like you were in pain right now for a reason because you were going around getting people who are also in pain and bringing them To me to heal so I I think that God always has no I don't think I know that God has the power to heal and there are a lot of people in critical pain and critical conditions that have so much pain on them and they're praying I have my um
00:21:58
Speaker
My youth leader, actually, from my church, she goes through health conditions, and she has been suffering for years. And this is something we pray about every week. And healing is not always linear. And you know but it's so easy to pray and be like, God, heal me from this pain. And sometimes he will. yeah Sometimes he will, because he is such a good God, but also, my When I think of like my church leader and she's going through those years of pain, it is so easy for God to snap his fingers and be like, okay, yeah, you are healed. You're good. But think of all of the hard situations and hard times that that woman had to go through that have brought her only closer to Jesus Christ.
00:22:51
Speaker
And I think it's so important that every story that we have is for a purpose. You know, she prays every day about her health and guess what? She's praying every day to God. She may not be like receiving that healing from God, but she is gaining a relationship with God. She is still putting in her trust every single day. So yeah, in the Bible and like there's so many different stories in the Bible where Jesus like heals people like right away like Um, when that dead, um, little girl was dead and the father was running to Jesus and he's like, Jesus, my daughter died. Please help me. And he was like, all right. Yeah. And rose her from the dead. Like God has that power. He is omnipotent. He is all powerful and he has those abilities to heal, but he may not always do it because sometimes it takes those hard moments to build faith and it brings all the more glory to him.
00:23:49
Speaker
So I don't know. But in your situation that you were talking about, just like going around and healing people, I think that's a valid reason. I mean, I think God has obviously the power to heal that person in an instant. But it's not our place to be like, OK, God, right now, this second heal him. Like, yes, that's a word prayer. And I think. like that's okay to pray but like maybe pray like I believe that you will heal this person not putting God on like a timeline like right this second but like Jesus Christ I know that you will heal this person eventually whenever that is you know
00:24:30
Speaker
Yeah. And like the Bible talks about like, don't put him, don't put God to the test because like we know that like he can do it. Um, like it's not always in his will to do it. So, uh, that's why I just like, it turns me off when someone like is like, um, like, you know, how does your leg feel now? Like you're just like expecting an immediate, right? reaction to um what what god does because like maybe it isn't in his will um sure so yeah i just i think i think that god calls us to pray boldly so i don't know like should we pray those prayers
00:25:06
Speaker
I don't know. But I think, I think what you said about like being like, like saying, like, I know that you will heal, um because all healing comes from God, regardless of if, like, if I break my arm, and I pray about it every day, and it heals in the time that it's supposed to heal, like, a normal time, um like, that healing is from God, because like, yeah God heals, he's a healer, like, yeah he he heals people. um but also like he he works miracles and miracles happen all the time. So um nothing is too big or too small for him. So I don't know. I've been wrestling with a lot. If like that's like a ah thing to do because like
00:25:47
Speaker
you're trying to bring the word of God and and and the gospel to people. um And I feel like there's different ways that you could you could show God's love and faithfulness yeah to them besides healing. I don't know. Some people really do like to focus on, like, oh, like did you like did you heal anyone? like I don't know. It's an interesting thought, I'm sure. it it is and I'm mean glad you brought up that point because I think there's a lot of people that are listening to this and maybe it's healing mentally too and physically like everyone it is a human intrinsic feeling emotion whatever to have pain whatever that is and so when we know our father who is a healer it's
00:26:38
Speaker
We know that he will come through with that if we pray. If we knock, he will answer. yeah We know that he will heal. We know that he will get us through it.

Power and Practice of Prayer

00:26:48
Speaker
And yeah, sometimes it's not an immediate like, oh, I'm healing you right now. like Sometimes it's a slow process. Sometimes you're going to go down before you go back up. But either way, it's growing your faith. It's testing you. And yeah, continue to pray boldly through that knowing that your father is there with you and that everything happens for a reason.
00:27:10
Speaker
Yeah, for how you can prosper for his kingdom. So that's just really cool. um As we go in the podcast, I just wanted to leave you with um this verse from Acts that really kind of spokes me. from It's from Acts 4. um And I'm going to kind of jump around. I'm starting in verse 29 and I'll probably, I'll end in verse 21, but I'll skip a little bit in the middle. But it said, now Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness, skipping a little bit. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. So as you leave here today, like I just pray that like everyone here, like, um,
00:27:52
Speaker
Don't be afraid of like of the word of God. like Everyone needs to hear it. So in your prayers, um in your um evangelism work, I just pray that like The word of God is not something that needs to be hidden. So speak it with boldness, pray with boldness, um because knock and the door and and the door will be opened. um So yeah, Annika, you wanna pray for us as we close the podcast? Yeah, um i will I'm gonna say one more thing actually. um So if you don't know how to pray, ah here I just kinda wanted to give a little space. Thank you.
00:28:30
Speaker
to show you how to pray because prayer is so important. Prayer is how we grow in a relationship with God. And sometimes, um especially if you're starting off with faith or if you've been growing in faith for a long time, um and you look at prayer and it's like, oh, I don't know how to pray. I don't know where to start. Well, good thing you're listening to this podcast because prayer is so important. Prayer is how we speak to Jesus, how we speak to God, how we communicate and grow our relationship with God and without prayer we would not be able to have a relationship with God.
00:29:03
Speaker
so um Prayer is very important. And I wanted to just say a few things. um How I started my faith is I said um three things each night that I was thankful for. Three blessings that I encountered over the course of my day. And then three things I want to pray for. Like, pray for people, pray for myself. And that got me to just see so many of the little blessings that were so easily passed by that God intentionally put into my day by giving gratitude and saying, thank you for this, this, and this, Jesus. That is all it takes, giving recognition to Jesus for the things that he has given us.
00:29:48
Speaker
and also praying for um some things in our life. m But I think another aspect that I would say now that I would add to that is repentance. And this is something that I have grown a lot in recently is seeing the importance of repentance. And sin drives us away from God and um just like our relationship. That's why Jesus sent his son to die for us so that we are able to have a relationship with God because we are flawed and God is perfect. And um because of Jesus Christ, we are now able to have a relationship with God. But what drives us still apart is that sin. So when we bring that sin that we have,
00:30:36
Speaker
Innately in us to God it builds that relationship it makes us closer and Yes, God will always forgive us. Yes Jesus Christ will always forgive us, but we have to ask for forgiveness We can't just expect him to be like oh, yeah, you know that one sin yeah, you should have forgiven me like you have to Build it's like but you're you're fighting with a friend right and you just expect them to forgive you without apologizing for what you did to them you have to apologize for them to forgive you you have to bring that sin to god for god to say yes of course i'll forgive you so i think also adding that into um
00:31:20
Speaker
Your prayer as well, even if it's just like going through your day, and sometimes you don't know what to like repent for, but um that's where you ask God, like Jesus, bring to the surface anything that I am not seeing. Help me to figure out what I'm doing wrong that is driving me away from my relationship with you. and some things it's so simple it's like bitterness to bitterness towards a person jealousy what else anger if you have anger sexual immorality all of that like cursing gossiping everything that

um makes you feel kind of icky. That's the things that you should be asking for forgiveness and being like, Jesus, teach me how to grow from this situation. So in my opinion, three things um to be grateful for that you're grateful for, three things you want to pray for and If I don't know if you really want to put a number on this, but if you can three things to repent for more or less, it doesn't really matter. That that's what the Bible says. Like you should with every action, just pray, honor God with everything. Like just talk to God. You know, it doesn't always have to be structured like that. Like yeah you're going through your day and you're just like, something pops in your brain. You're like, Oh God, this is what's up. And, um,
