Speaker: That's my report! Hi, everyone. Welcome back to the Smut Report podcast. um Just like most weeks, we are tumble reads in this week.
Speaker: And I'm Holly and I will be fearlessly. leading us. through the desert. And the... Rolling books. Oh, I'm Ingrid. I will follow. I'm Erin.
Speaker: And I would like to say that while I was in Utah, I saw like. a bazillion tumble reads. Tumbleweeds. And you thought of us every time. And I thought of every time. yeah You were like, where's all the words?
Speaker: yeah Where are the floating books? um Okay, so... For those of - You, who just listened to the podcast. And. You may not know this, but we also run a blog.
Speaker: And in fact, we started as a blog right when blogging was like on the decline. But it's okay. We are still running a blog. And there are dozens of us strong in the blogosphere. It's not a sub stack. It's not a medium profile. No, it's a blog.
Speaker: You should check us out. Straight out blog. We're very cool. But anyway. One thing that we do on the blog. um on a pretty regular basis is we have um let's talk tropes conversations where we pick a trope um and then sometimes an archetype or a setting. And we have some questions that we answer and we just kind of like in typing form rather than verbal form, talk about a trope.
Speaker: But they're... uh on the blog were kind of reaching the bottom of the barrel right we've already done the easy ones but i thought it would be fun to revisit one of the tropes we did really early and talk about it on the podcast and also see if our answers have changed o i have to do my homework wait let me pull it up
Speaker: um Anyway, but so the very first Let's Talk Tropes we did. was best friend's sibling. So. that's good stuff I thought We could talk about the best friend sibling trope and what we love about it and what we don't love about it. And if we have any books that we want to recommend about it. Recommend with that trope.
Speaker: Anyway... that's That's what I figured we could do. something that's a good idea something with like a little more structure than our usual tumble reads But. probably we're not going to stick to a structure. So we try, but it never seems to work for long. Go where the wind takes us. Okay. Well, so we usually start out. those let's talk tropes
Speaker: Cool. We probably didn't have this structure. No, this is the first one we did with a structure. Okay. With a structure. With the structure. We usually start out with. Do you like this trope? Right. so Yeah.
Speaker: So. Do you like this trope? No. so Your answer hasn't changed. I do remember that. Um. I don't know. I'm just like. No.
Speaker: I feel like it's... Okay, so the caveat, I feel like this is... Angry. ANGRY! Ingrid is - bringing us to this. Every time we have a conversation about anything, it's like, it's a craft issue. And any trope or situation can be done. Well. But... This one is not one that like really speaks to me. Yeah, I think also with that. if you have to I feel like I've said this before. in
Speaker: Not this one, but other Let's Talk Tropes. posts If you have to hunt in... Peck for... the right Ones. then it's also not like a reliably satisfying trope, right? like Right. And if they can be done well, but they're like... You don't know. If this one is going to be or isn't going to be. and the odds are not in your favor, then then I feel like that makes it an undesirable trope, yeah. Yeah, I think that's fair. But yeah, I just... ah I don't know. Maybe it's because...
Speaker: I'm like I don't, I'm like, ew. No, I don't. I'm not interested in my siblings' friends. and then you are the sibling you are the oldest sibling i am the oldest sibling but that's okay like younger Men or women could be cool.
Speaker: And also like once you're in a... Well... Well, actually, no, I was gonna say once you're an adult, it's less of a big deal. But actually, this is why I think I don't like it. is because it's very... linked to here are the people that I knew. Enough.
Speaker: My adolescence. And now that we are adults, we can do this. Because like a best friend's sibling, if you're ah adult best friends and you meet their sibling as an adult, then it's like not a big deal. Right.
Speaker: I think it's because it's very tied to adolescence and having this adolescent. Crush. become your be all end all HEA 10 years later.
Speaker: is I feel like how it commonly goes. And I don't love that. I think - That's true, and I haven't really considered that before, but it does tend to... rely on youthful relationships and like how dare you jeopardize my youthful relationship but wait hold on should we finish answering the question ingrid you and i about whether or not we like this trip before we get into more about this or were you going to do that anyway in your comment right now I... I probably would have gone down a
Speaker: Bit of a rabbit hole. i think We should just go down the rabbit hole. but well All right. Ingrid, go down the rabbit hole. I think my answer changed because I think I used to like this a lot more than I do now. And I think that there's.
Speaker: i I... like it less for an adjacent reason to Holly's reasoning. So... That's the beginning of my rabbit hole. If you want to redirect before I go down the rabbit hole. No, just go, go. So here's my reasoning. So you, you brought it up for adolescent reasons, but mine I think is more of like. a uh plot dynamic issue and that's this so like you said usually it's like you know ah or
Speaker: the ones that I remember reading back in the day were more um like. I had a crush on my older brothers best friend and now we're adults type of thing um But a lot of the ones that I've been reading lately. It's more. you know um my usually it's older brother's best friend let's be real um but It's...
Speaker: It's been more like, well, he's a bit of a hound dog. You know what I mean? And I know how he is with women, so I don't want him to date my little sister or whatever, whatever you know? And I think the issue is is that... No matter what, and that's just one example, but no matter what the issue is, if...
Speaker: If you don't think that you're... Someone that you really love should be dating your best friend. Like, why are you best friends with them? That's what Holly said in the post. Yeah. So see, now I'm i'm catching up to Holly maturity -wise. and um so there's that one and then also it's just you know i think that um
Speaker: Some of the better ones that I've read lately have been where the... sibling is like, that's great. I just love this. I love my best friend and my sibling being together or, you know. yeah you know that the the only concern is what happens if we break up type of a thing you know which are real issues and that makes sense to me Those are the ones that I tend to think I buy into more because they seem more realistic. but
Speaker: Yeah, I think the I think the the whole, you know, oh, I had a crush on my older brother's best friend. And now I finally get my chance or the ones where you're like, well, but he's a bit of a hound dog. I don't want him around. My sister are a bit tired now. Like I think. Maybe we kind of...
Speaker: ever Well, I'm saying this like society has caught up, but Holly already knew that. So maybe it was just me anyway. Well, right. Or like. Also, it's like... a If we flip it and it's my best friend's older brother. Right? Like imagine if you guys had an older brother.
Speaker: who lived with you. in high school. And I would come over. Not to hang out with you. Oh, I like. to like make googly eyes at your big brother like Gross.
Speaker: yeah weird Like what kind of friendship is that? Yeah. it it I think... um It's definitely. I think some of the messiness.
Speaker: of it is not fully explored in a way that is satisfying to me and i think that I think it becomes a plot slash character problem. If it's. there's There's a finer line than I remember there being in my head now, where it quickly becomes a plot or character problem if it's not handled just right. And if it's...
Speaker: If it's handled. too right, it becomes boring. so Yeah. I know when you were describing these new ones where the sibling is like, oh, this is great. I'm so happy you guys are together. I'm like, well, that sounds like a boring book. Right.
Speaker: But then you get to the point where it's like, OK, well, what if they kept it a secret for a while because they were worried about somebody breaking up? Or there was um one that I read recently where they there was something else really dramatic going on in the plot. Like they were, you know.
Speaker: Adam. family reunion or wedding or something and it just wasn't the time. You know what I mean? like So there was a secret that was being kept. And then the bigger the secret got, the more. It became a big nothing burger. But anyway, so there are ways to do it, but then it becomes, I think it becomes a secondary plot trope. You see what I'm saying? I think... It's...
Speaker: Ayy. I think my feelings on this has shifted. I tend to like it, but I've been reading a lot more low -angst books. Oh, that makes fun of us. And yes.
Speaker: I'm like, could please don't make any demands. How many people were beheaded in my last book? Just kidding. i One of the books on my TBR is about a serial killer. But you know. I guess that's a on little bit. Serial killing. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. that Will he get caught or not? I don't know. But, you know. Um. But no, it's it's just these, yeah, it's like. So I'm going kind of through this phase where I'm like, please don't make a lot of demands of me because Yeah.
Speaker: anxiety in hyang's books i can't just like put them down And then I'm just running on adrenaline. Like my life is running on adrenaline. I don't need to add more. So that might be impacting me a little bit, but I'm also hitting the. Frequent.
Speaker: kind of mature approach i guess because yes i think a lot of authors are are Also coming to this conclusion of, well, if you... don't think that this person is a good partner. Why are you friends with them?
Speaker: um And I like that. But also I think what I really always liked about this. trope was the angst and drama Hmm. you know that was the fun part where it's like a secret relationship and sneaking around like That's why people do it. because Yeah. it adds the drama and that's what's the fun thing is it right or mature or responsible no no but it's not the point yeah so
Speaker: So I think that's why I liked it before. But I mean, I even remember there was one, it was Roxy Noir. And it was one where like the brother even like. punches the guy in the face at the end fantastic i know it's like all the stuff that i would have eaten up So much in my like late teens and early 20s, right? And even at that point.
Speaker: I was like, I don't love that. like That's not cool. So then I shifted to this. sort of more mature approach of like okay how's this going to affect the relationship and i wish I could. There were a couple. Where it's like, look I'm really happy for you but I'm really scared. But. actually maybe one that i could say that i read recently is flagrant foul which is the third book in the Poetry on Ice series by Jesse Rain. So it's like hockey players. And... All three of the guys are hockey players.
Speaker: um So the two older ones are the best friends. But the... best friend and the little brother play on the same team. and the other brother plays on a different team they're you know professionals so they come and go And...
Speaker: There are points when... It's like the brother. Notices. That they're... is an attraction. Between his best friend and his sibling. But he's like, you can't. You can't. Unless you're serious.
Speaker: Right. Like you can't just fuck around with him. And that happens when like. They're really young. like They're hockey players, so they're really young anyway. But, you know, it's like the kid is just 18. kind of like he it's and it's like oh I'm noticing you or met you for the first time or whatever. I don't remember when these guys met, if it was like. in hockey or what uh And. You know, so it's some years later and maybe this guy is ready to settle down now, but he already made the agreement with his friend that.
Speaker: He wouldn't fuck around. right with the little brother so there's like this huge angst it was like mo chef's kiss levels of angst i was like oh my god ah And the little brother is doesn't know that this conversation happened and is like.
Speaker: Quit just like messing eye around. Like I'm into you. I know you're into me. You're irritating the hell out of me. Knock it off. Yes. Sorry. how you Oh, no, I just. Yeah, that is interesting. Like that could that is something that is fun about these. Yeah. Is like you can't if you can get this dynamic of the. you know the older ones If the older ones are the friends where they're like. don't mess around with my younger sibling.
Speaker: And the younger siblings, like, I'm an adult. I want to be messed around with. Like, I'm i'm in my youth. I'm ready to, like, let loose and... Have fun. And stop seeing me as a child. Yeah. Like I think that that can lead to. like fun angst yeah um and it becomes fun in in the end too i mean it goes all the way through because there's this you know early on agreement and not for bad reasons it's not like You know, he thinks his best friend is a total dog or. He is protecting the purity of his long younger sibling. He's just like, if you're not going to take this seriously. Basically, I'm afraid of the impacts it could have on all of the relationships that I have because it's a triangle, you know, like, yes, technically the relationships are one to one. All relationships are technically one to one. But. The triangle dynamic. does affect the one -to -one relationships and it makes it very challenging and so in the end of this book spoilers like when it is discovered the brother's not necessarily upset
Speaker: About a betrayal or whatever. I mean, a little. That's what comes out. It's that going back to our anger and conversation. But it's like. Fear. anger and fear well am i not going to be your important person anymore are you going to leave me out now and just be all like lovey lovey And our hangout time.
Speaker: When I'm in town, it's going to be all about you and not about. us anymore right Like our sibling trips. Are you going to come on our sibling trips now? Our sibling trips not about us. Our best friend trips like not just about us because now my siblings there like.
Speaker: yeah you know So that is a valid concern and fear. And I think when authors really get good at playing into that. It's still fun. But it's so hard. It's so hard to find. Yeah. Good ones, I think now. I'm just like, okay. And there have been so many that I've read. I still read them. I'll pick them up. I'll be like, yes. Okay, let's go. But but it's usually like.
Speaker: Oh I love this for you. I love you, and I love you, and now you love each other. Hooray! Like. Okay. We're just living in this fantasy land. I love that for us. ah But it's not very exciting.
Speaker: as far as the book you know Yeah. Yeah, i I also feel like I have read... A lot of. these type of books that are non -tropes you know what i mean where It is a best friend sibling, but it's not a. it's not a problem. like it doesn't even It's not even a dynamic. It's just by their happenstance connection. Do you know what I mean? Mm -hmm Yeah.
Speaker: And I think. feel like i see i there have been more and i wish that i could remember books because i can't but um But I remember. multiple where it's been like, oh, well. you know. This is my sister. And they're like, nice to meet you. And then maybe they'll make it like one offhand comment about it later, but it's a complete non -issue, not a plot driver. not even a tool it's just a connection.
Speaker: you know Do you think that that becomes an issue? In the so -called tropification. advertising where you know if you pick it up i don't know if you did because you're not saying you probably don't even remember if you're citing a specific book but like you know you're scrolling through instagram and you're like
Speaker: Oh! this looks cute and like one of the squiggly arrows is best friend's sibling Right. But then you go in and read it and you're like, but it's not. I mean, do you think that that is a contributing? factor to the disconnect or are you just thinking of
Speaker: examples and maybe the author didn't use it as an advertising i I have kind of learned my lesson letter and I'm not getting them. off of the interrupt but i absolutely think this could be a problem for other people because there are some people who really like certain tropes and i think that this is a pretty common one And. I could totally see this being a problem for some people. I... I have seen I have. after the fact have seen advertisements for books that I've read or
Speaker: um even just... reviews or mentions of books that I've read where it's been designated certain things and I'm like, what? where did you get that from or i that's not the other thing it's not the first thing i would call out You know what I mean? Right. where it's Yes, that is a...
Speaker: quality of the book but it is not you know a the structure of the book it's not a hallmark of the book. It's not what I would say first, if I was describing it to somebody. And I, I think, uh, yeah, i think I, I don't love that. Um,
Speaker: This is me being very snooty though. I don't love the advertising techniques because I think it's dishonest. And then of course I look like a wholesome little. Naive. book absorber.
Speaker: Who doesn't understand that? authors do have to market their books and they're going to do. Whatever they have to do. And publishers, same thing, you know. Yeah. Yeah, but. Bad marketing is bad.
Speaker: bad marketing recently experienced with a romance but it's not everyone was dead right oh my gosh don't even get me started on that anyway Yeah, I'll have to do a whole thing on that one. um but I think. um
Speaker: there The... Polly... sunshine part of me is like well they're picking up tags though they're just trying to get seen it's not necessarily that they're trying to lie to readers it's just that they are throwing that on there because they want it to get picked up and filtered into people's you know attention they're trying to trick computers they're not trying to trick people That's what I say in my heart. But I know that that's not always necessarily true. No, I mean, I think that is maybe a little bit what it boils down to. Well, and I think also there are a lot of people who um like don't really understand what it means to use a trope or like what a trope is. They're like, well. Yeah, it is. best friends and one of their siblings. Right.
Speaker: End.
Speaker: Therefore, it fulfills the trope. yeah well that's a good point oh so that's why i was kind of going to ask ingrid but maybe you both i was going to ask ingrid because ingrid also uses reddit And I don't know. To what extent? you do this ingrid but When I'm going through people's ah requests. And somebody puts in a request. And frequently because, you know. The scope of the internet is many years long at this point. There's... There are. The low -hanging fruit is already caught. right so they'll be specific and they'll be like i want a Best friends to lovers, especially with these elements. Yeah. Or sometimes it's just every, you know, some, uh, I think both romance books and MM romance also have mega, mega lists, right? Mega threads. And they. Say, give us all. Give us all of your, give us all the best.
Speaker: Best friends to lovers. Or I mean, not best friends, lovers, best friends, siblings. And people start throwing stuff in. And do you find that in those circumstances, that's where the situation that Holly is describing comes up where. People don't understand the brief. They don't understand that this is supposed to be a drama dynamic. And not just like. A relationship element.
Speaker: It kind of feels like when you know when you were in school, or I don't know if anyone's ever worked in a classroom, and you can tell that there are some kids who just really want to raise their hands. That's what it kind of feels like.
Speaker: Sometimes it's like, well, well I wrote a best friends to lovers or best friend. Best friend sibling. We don't even know what trump we're talking about anymore. Yeah. I read one of those and it was this and it's like, well, OK, but that's not exactly what we're talking about. You know what I mean? So, um yeah, that's kind of what I think that vibe is. It's just I really want to raise my hand. So there's there's that that. I think there's you know, things can get mislabeled if one, they're trying to trick computers or two, it's people who are just trying to recommend stuff because they just like the book and they just want to participate in the conversation. And that's fine. But yeah, like this is a good.
Speaker: I always it's good to remember that just because it has it doesn't mean that's the vibe. And I also in my early days of tagging tropes in some of my books would be like, well, OK, but it's got this and this and this. And I would try to do all of it. But...
Speaker: Really, you're trying to say... So what's... What's the thing about this book? What's the... dynamic like what What's the sauce? You know, like, and there really should only be like maybe one or two usually. Otherwise. sometimes if it's a series like a long series you might have more but generally speaking if you've got a book and it's got five tropes in it i hate to break it to you Half those aren't going to be the tropes of the book. It's not.
Speaker: I'll do that sometimes. I'm like, let me plug in everything. I know. They're dynamics. It might be ingredients, but the trope is what drives. That's a good point. the plot and the characters and their actions their motivations and you know like that type of thing. That's what we're talking about. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Hmm. If you're looking at the literary literary criticism version. of what we're talking about that's that if you're in marketing sure you might feel differently but Right.
Speaker: Right. But then if you're marketing a book. as something and it's not. i mean you know it's like every time somebody markets their book as a romance and from a big publisher and then uh everybody dies at the end it's the best way to make Romance readers.
Speaker: the angry well and i like remember in one of my in one of my first publishing positions it i i'm pretty sure it was 50 shades of gray or it was either that or it was uh The vampire one.
Speaker: Twilight. Twilight, yeah. um um came up in conversation because i worked in marketing and publishing for a while and um and The way that that.
Speaker: whichever one it was, was marketed. was considered really brilliant because instead of if they had marketed it as just like a mass market romance or whatever you know or a romance it would never have reached who it reached it was marketed specifically as you know young adult or
Speaker: women fiction or whatever it was they they purposefully put it into a different slot so that it would hit an audience that wouldn't normally reach for it and it would be titillating. mm -hmm They did it on purpose because in doing so, it stood out from the crowd instead of being. correctly categorized.
Speaker: You know what I'm saying? Right. this is That's a strategy. So like they aren't supposed to think we're sitting here thinking like the rule following English major slash history major that we are. How dare you not follow the rules. Right.
Speaker: but this isn't a library they're selling books and so yes like i you're right you would think, because we are rule followers, oh, it should be labeled. appropriately so that people can find it. But what they did was they were like, we're going to label it. on purpose so that it fits into a different category, but it stands out. It's different from all the others and people will talk about it. And it worked.
Speaker: Yeah. drumming up a conversation sometimes I think of like things where everybody gets bent out of shape about it. and I'm like, yeah, but. Now you're talking about it. Now the entirety of Romancelandia. Mm hmm.
Speaker: is talking about it that's true Like that stupid book where they die. I'm sorry. I read a book. I'm behind the times. and The main characters died and I'm really upset about it. I wasn't prepared for it. I held out hope even though I was like, gosh, this feels an awful lot like The Sixth Sense.
Speaker: And... And it was. was It was. Anyway. Well, so Holly... Normally we end with recommendations. Do you want to?
Speaker: do that or uh sure do you guys have recommendations for great Definitely just spring this upon me. Yeah, I know, right? but No preparation. I know, right? I mean, like I can't. i Like the last...
Speaker: Like I tried to read Problematic Summer Romance. Recently. which is Ali Hazelwood and which is a... older brother's best friend book. Okay. But I just like. could couldn't deal with the voice. So I read maybe three chapters. So.
Speaker: Cannot. really report. on How Well. that book handled that trope. Although there's also a significant age gap. I want to say like 15 years. Oof -da. So, um, sounds fun.
Speaker: you know, there's like a lot of other stuff going on there. Okay, I have one. Cannot recommend. or Unrecommend. Basically. Sorry, go ahead. and I can't believe it, but I have one. And it's a classic. Like right in the trope.
Speaker: example too. And it's pretty recent. I think it came out in 2025. You ready? I'm ready. A River Connects Us by Allie Winters. So this is part of a. Yeah. So um this is number three. In this series. And.
Speaker: The... the hero grayson he goes home for his brother's wedding and his Mom is trying to matchmake so he asks his sister's childhood best friend to be his date, not realizing, because he's an oaf, that she's had a crush on him her entire life. Oh.
Speaker: Oh. And in the beginning. For under character chemistry I wrote, it goes from oof uncomfortable to oof that's hot. So it's... It's good. I remember it being, this is what I love though about this one is that it's like a classic best friends. or siblings, best friend situation, right? But... She's the pursuer.
Speaker: she's the one who's like all right look you want to ask me on a date fine but i'm gonna I'm going to push you to see if you can actually see that we would be a great couple kind of a thing. And it's... awesome it was really good it's really cute ali winters too she's got that vibe where it's there's I call it the creeping tension. She's like, you don't. it'
Speaker: you can talk about the plot and you'd be like oh yeah and then and then they she like tries to date him And it's like, oh, that man gripping Ingrid. There's no knives. You know, like it's super chill, but it's really, you're like, oh, I wonder what's going to happen. It's so good. It's so good.
Speaker: yeah i like that one So I just scrolled through the website real quick, like just looking at the tag Best Friend Sibling. The last book I reviewed. I reviewed. with this trope was in 2022.
Speaker: So... Obviously I do not read this trope very often. Truth. um So, no, I have no recommendations. that I have read in the past five years. Peace.
Speaker: Oh, I was going to go through and see. what it I didn't recommend anything in our initial post. Oh, yeah, because you were like, I love all of them. Just tell me everything.
Speaker: I apparently have a lot in here wow go me and You said Being Hospitable by Mika James. Oh, but it wasn't like a... It wasn't like a... Whole thing, I guess. Okay. Well. I think.
Speaker: I already said flagrant foul. Had some really good. Drama. which I found it. incredibly enjoyable. And it gave me some butterflies, which... I love, and there's a moment in this book.
Speaker: Where the the... friend. comes home because of course these guys are like sharing an apartment the friend comes home with this other guy and the brother Okay. It's like. Excuse me. Get out of my house. If anyone is going to be seducing him tonight, it is going to be me.
Speaker: He's like... Completely misreading the situation between these two guys. I guess this one guy was just like... The - friend was so drunk that he was like i'm gonna take you home and this guy's like what what ah Okay, I'm gonna leave, I guess.
Speaker: It was like. So good. it's like I love this. So that was really fun. um Another one. That. So I actually recently talked about this in one of our Let's Talk. archetypes which was widows and widowers but so This one also has the best friend sibling situation. um but it's like a childhood crush maybe actually more than a best friend sibling And that's add attention.
Speaker: By Annabeth Albert. Mm. And it's like the younger sibling was just too young. When? They met. and so you know wasn't even on the radar and now is an adult so it's been some years right like this other guy he got married he had kids you know he's he's moved on And they haven't seen each other for a while.
Speaker: Because the two best friends are military best friends, you know, and the sibling is back home. and So... Uh... The sibling is like, well, I can be a live -in nanny for the summer for you while your mom's gone. and you know work my work my job. um now that I'm done with school and figuring out what's next. And... It's a little bit of like, oh. I'm an adult now. You know, so that was fun. And...
Speaker: But probably more Widow Widower slash Childhood Crush than Full Blown. best friend sibling situation. um And then for just like. Oh. Another high drama. Complicated. Because it's not really...
Speaker: It's like best friend sibling. But it's a motorcycle club book. It's been a long time since I did a motorcycle club book. ah But this one is so much drama. So it's On the Wind by Kristen Ashley. And the Chaos series follows the...
Speaker: like mystery man's here i don't even know what the the mystery man like quartet into this motorcycle club so It's actually her dad, but... Her lover is also a member of the motorcycle club. So it's like. They're friends because they're brothers in the club. Hmm. And she's like, you know. the daughter of the president.
Speaker: And oh my god. The drama. The drama. Wait, but that's not best friend sibling. But it kind of, I mean.
