We hear a patient’s perspective on healthcare from Derwin Hayward as Rob Oliver interviews him on the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast. Derwin was born in New Zealand and now lives in Sydney, Australia. His parents faced some tough decisions when he was a baby that have shaped his outlook on medicine and the healthcare community. This is interview 68 of 137 in the world record setting patient’s perspective interview marathon.

Here are 3 things that stood out in the patient’s perspective on healthcare from Derwin Hayward:

  • Sometimes, medical professionals can ignore the patient and/or their family as they develop a plan for treatment. It is imperative that the patient, and by extension their family, be at the center of care planning.
  • Derwin suggests that doctors today can become “drug pushers” for the pharmaceutical companies. Patients need to be the driving force in healthcare, not big Pharma.
  • Doctors and other medical professionals need to understand that patients have lives outside of the clinical setting. They need to understand the individuals in their offices in a holistic manner.
