Phil Gordon: to talk about a couple of things we had planned for the rest of the show, Dave, you know, over the years we've always reviewed. Comedy specials where we can.

Dave Margolis: All right.

Phil Gordon: And also live shows. So tonight we're going to take a look.

Dave Margolis: You just kind of go through this. My dog is making a lot of noise.

Phil Gordon: Yeah. you You go ahead and take care of the dog.

Dave Margolis: I'm going to quiet him down, but just kind of explain the situation.

Phil Gordon: The White Sox truck must have excited them. um And we're going to take a look at the recent Trevor Noah special. This is currently on Netflix. It was produced this year.

Phil Gordon: 2026. Trevor Noah, of course, everyone knows from The Daily Show. And there's a... A brilliant stand -up comic. And then we're going to compare and contrast.

Phil Gordon: a show that Dave and I saw. One of Tucson's favorite sons. And that is Robert Mack. Robert Mack, who... Grew up in Tucson. In fact, even went to...

Phil Gordon: ah high school here. I believe it's Sail Point High School. Comes back every once in a while. I think he lives in Washington, D .C. these days. And when he comes, he always does a number of shows in the area from Phoenix to...

Phil Gordon: Flagstaff, and always here in Tucson. In fact, I saw him one time in the cell point. high school auditorium. And he filled. that auditorium.

Phil Gordon: Dave, I'm telling folks about... Robert Mack in the show we saw. up And we're going to compare and contrast that to the new Trevor Noah special.

Dave Margolis: and right

Phil Gordon: We also are going to talk about some... special days in october as we like to do dave i think you might have a little quiz

Dave Margolis: I'm going to give you, Phil, I'm going to give you the quiz yeah the quiz for October. I'm gonna quiz you.

Phil Gordon: i am I am ready. I am as ready as the White Sox, Dave. And then if we have time, we're going to catch up on a little ah Arizona politics.

Phil Gordon: discussion Let's ah just let folks know that. you know With the midterms coming in November. We're going to try to accent local politics and get a few experts in here. A good friend, Dave, who you probably know from Odyssey Storytelling.

Phil Gordon: Monica Bauer. is going to join us, and she is... a political science professor. she was believe it or not dave a congressional candidate herself at one time

Dave Margolis: all right

Dave Margolis: wow Okay.

Phil Gordon: So she's going to share that with us and also. give her assessment of the political races.

Dave Margolis: Okay.

Phil Gordon: I asked her to focus in on the Siskamani -Mendoza race. and also the statewide races.

Dave Margolis: let's start let's but Let's talk about the... yeah the shows that we saw. Um,

Phil Gordon: Absolutely. You start us off Dave.

Dave Margolis: Robert. And we did you start talking about seeing Robert Mac at your mom's house, right?

Phil Gordon: Yes, I did Go ahead.

Dave Margolis: No, it's just, I don't know how much much much you went into, but I just felt like um Robert Mackey's Tucson comic. kind of a great role model for comics here because he he made it. He was originally from Washington State but came down here.

Dave Margolis: and he is very successful. tours nationally, he travels out of the country sometimes. and we went to see him at your mom's house. It was a nice afternoon there.

Dave Margolis: uh he's funny you can't argue with the fact that the guy is funny and that he's had a very successful career and that's really all you want if you're a comic

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: um i would say and we talked about this a little bit i think you felt the same way He's not exactly somebody that really connects with the audience. You know, he's not really a personal, un really you don't really get a feeling for him as a person. Now, it's a lot of wordplay, and he did an hour, and, you know, it was pretty much just rock solid with jokes, with punchlines all the way through, which is great, but you didn't really feel like you knew him that much. at the end. What do you think about that?

Phil Gordon: well I agree with your comment, Dave, now, as I was sharing before you rejoined us. How is Chloe, your dog, by the way?

Dave Margolis: I guess he's okay. you know i'm I'm a fairly new dog owner, so I'm not quite sure when he understands me and when he doesn't. but

Phil Gordon: Okay.

Dave Margolis: I think I'll be okay.

Phil Gordon: Well, maybe he wants in on the show, Dave.

Dave Margolis: I was going to bring him up here, but then it's a problem with him kind of like walking around not settling down.

Phil Gordon: you know he

Dave Margolis: So if he would come up and go to sleep, I'd love it, but I don't know about that.

Phil Gordon: Okay.

Phil Gordon: Understood. Understood. Well, back to Robert Mack. I was telling the audience that I've seen Robert Mack a number of times. I've actually even performed together with Robert Mack at laughs.

Phil Gordon: But one time I saw him at Sal Point High School. where he came back to the high school he went to, and he loaded. this auditorium i mean there must have been 300 plus people in there and there he connected very very well he knew obviously many of the people in the audience So in all fairness Let's...

Phil Gordon: Point out. that it was an unusual time. It was a Sunday 4 p .m. show. I think some of the people were in the audience waiting for Sunday Night Football to start.

Phil Gordon: So, you know, you know how that goes when there's an audience that's you know not there necessarily for you.

Dave Margolis: yeah

Phil Gordon: ah But... Let's talk about this, Dave, because I... I know Robert Mack, but I wouldn't call him a close friend. It seemed like there was something.

Phil Gordon: disturbing him that day. He even alluded. To like. Somebody. dropping out of the show or something. And if you recall, Very unusual. He opened the show.

Phil Gordon: Then there was a feature Then he came back to headline. So I got the impression that something happened. Maybe somebody dropped out and it seemed to throw him a little bit because.

Phil Gordon: Here he comes out and opens the show. And then, you know, right away that he introduces somebody else. so It was a little awkward, although I do want to say. I think it's a great venue, your mom's house.

Dave Margolis: It's a great venue.

Phil Gordon: Uh,

Dave Margolis: and i think um You know, he I mean, he came out and he it looked it sounded like maybe you hit the host dropped out or something. because he was Introducing the show and I thought that's so strange because probably

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: A good number of... the People in the crowd were comics. There were a number of people who could have... gone up and and hosted.

Phil Gordon: well, in in including

Dave Margolis: uh riddles would have been a natural and i don't know why he did that but maybe it was a last minute thing

Phil Gordon: and including Dave, Jesse Sweeney, who, you know, runs the show and she's a comic herself.

Dave Margolis: That's a sweet ad for your life.

Phil Gordon: and a very very wonderful host she hopes hosts the open mic weapon uh so I don't know. Something seemed a little off. uh His comedy was great.

Phil Gordon: You know, he's a true pro, as you said. So he nailed it. most of the bits that he does but i would agree with you there wasn't that great Connection. Like I've seen him have most of the time.

Phil Gordon: And it was just kind of lacking that night. Uh... He had a a feature, Dave, it was a Native American comic.

Dave Margolis: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: who was kind of interesting. And part of his schtick was he's from Yuma, I believe. the reservation in Yuma.

Dave Margolis: No.

Phil Gordon: And. ah Apparently... he was I took it to be completely true and honest that he was raised thinking that he was black. And that led to a lot of interesting observations. He was kind of funny. But also...

Phil Gordon: You know... um It didn't set the room on fire. I think that was another issue for Robert when he came up.

Dave Margolis: I would say this, that, you know, he seemed a little... a little green. ah he didn't have a lot of great material but I I did i felt much more connected to him. You felt more you' kind of on his side. Not that you were im not on Robert Mack's side, but I mean, even though his return wasn't great, he he he did you did connect with him. He seemed like a nice guy. You wanted to listen to him. And I think he i think he did pretty well.

Dave Margolis: I think you did pretty well.

Phil Gordon: You did it. He did, and it was a funny afternoon.

Dave Margolis: What are you saying with Robert Mack? Have you felt that the show that I saw didn't really represent him? That he's usually a little more... connective than that.

Phil Gordon: oh I would say absolutely.

Dave Margolis: Okay.

Phil Gordon: ah he He generally kills. you know He's got a very distinctive character. He has a unique. style of dress and a unique delivery and he's very uh astute, very smart comedy that he does.

Phil Gordon: And it was all there.

Dave Margolis: Okay.

Phil Gordon: at the show It just didn't flow. And I think you put your finger on it. It was not. a great connection with the audience.

Dave Margolis: joe

Phil Gordon: Uh... And, you know, I've done that show occasionally when I go to Las Vegas, the Jimmy Kimmel. open mic that's done in the afternoon. It's like a Thursday afternoon.

Phil Gordon: noon, I think. And... There's something about comedy in the afternoon that's really hard to grab the audience.

Dave Margolis: true yeah

Phil Gordon: All right, so let's... Compare and contrast, Dave.

Dave Margolis: All right.

Phil Gordon: We also watch the latest Trevor Noah. special the comic comedian Most folks know from hosting The Daily Show, following Jon Stewart. I thought he was brilliant at that. And I thought this special was simply brilliant.

Phil Gordon: Uh, he... On the other hand... connected marvelously. with the audience where he was. What did you think?

Dave Margolis: This was the special that was called... um Dispatch from the trenches or something from the trenches.

Phil Gordon: yeah From the trenches, I think.

Dave Margolis: And I thought, and I'm a big fan too, and I think he's a very bright guy, and I've seen him you know do his... just stick on the daily show and it's very good i i felt in this one it was a case of that you know audience Comics have fans. Yep.

Dave Margolis: successful comics they have fans now but some comics have like almost a cult -like fan following. And I think he's one of them where people are really into him.

Dave Margolis: They they they know his life story very well.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: they His book was, I think, what... Um, born a crime or something like that because she was born in South Africa.

Phil Gordon: That's right. You're right. He's autobiography.

Dave Margolis: black mother and a white father and he was literally his birth was a crime um and and people know that and they sympathize with him but i i thought there was i felt that he He had a pretty easy ride because they came in loving him.

Dave Margolis: and and and and they were really into it and they knew like a lot of things he would mention about his career i wouldn't know i but i'm not sure what he's talking about but everybody there in that hall definitely knew it so i felt i felt some of the material was not that great but that he had the audience in the palm of his hand i think the big segment he did on watching alien movies was kind of ordinary and didn't really...

Dave Margolis: uh high into what he was trying to get at which seemed to be a lot of Trump criticism and criticism of politics today, and I thought that seemed like kind of filler but Again, I'm i'm being very... being very specific on this because we were talked about comparing them um yeah no question he's a very funny guy and very successful but i i felt when you're when you're when you're delivering to an audience and I think we found this kind of in a way where we went to see Jim Gaffigan.

Dave Margolis: We went to see him last year, and and you you have very, very, people knew his jokes, you know, and it really, really helped.

Phil Gordon: Sure. I remember that

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: He was great, you know, he was great, but people really knew knew his jokes going in, so. um Yeah.

Phil Gordon: Okay, well... ah I'm gonna disagree with you a little bit here, Dave. I i thought it was a big home run. Just a little more background for those who may not know, he is from South Africa.

Phil Gordon: And he... okay became very popular as the, you know, second host of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart left. ah during the Obama administration. and you know, he had a kind of a similar and parents of mixed races like Barack Obama. And I think people associate him with that time.

Phil Gordon: And he opened with that, I thought, very hilarious bit. where he was actually the subject of many Trump...

Dave Margolis: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: posts and a lot of all caps after he hosted the Grammys.

Dave Margolis: music Yes.

Phil Gordon: uh, if you recall. And, uh, if yeah I wrote it down because I thought it was so funny. If you remember, he did the... he He actually read from his phone the... Truth Social.

Phil Gordon: post where it said, Grammys are the worst. The host, Trevor Noah, whoever he may be. was almost as bad as Jimmy Kimmel.

Phil Gordon: And then he riffed on that for a while. I thought it was hilarious.

Dave Margolis: the right Yeah, yeah.

Phil Gordon: I'll agree with you that the weakest part of the show was his little... act out of the alien invasion.

Dave Margolis: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: But it was under the guise that was a very funny premise that he said, no alien movies ever have them enslaving Africa or coming to Africa because...

Dave Margolis: Right. Yeah. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: They don't want to go there. And I thought the premise was very funny. it might have gone on a little bit long but then David, I'm happy to discuss this longer, but... I do want to say. the second half at least of his special.

Phil Gordon: was focused on his trip to the african History Museum in Washington, D .C. Where he took you. through the various exhibits, and I thought that was magnificent and brilliant. And may I say...

Phil Gordon: And you know I love to fool around with impressions. He did. an incredible Mark Luther King Jr. impersonation.

Dave Margolis: right go Yeah, it was very good.

Phil Gordon: So. All right.

Dave Margolis: i felt i I felt he did it too much. And I felt that a lot of the stuff that he was doing was like Like a lot of the points he was making, they were not as... big or dramatic as I think he wanted them to be, but with a very generous audience they worked.

Dave Margolis: But for me, I was kind of, yeah, we we know that, we know that, we know that. um But some of it I think is also I'm suffering from. political overload where I find it hard to find political comedy that funny anymore because because it's just gone on too long.

Dave Margolis: And it's too sad, despite the hilarious. day in Congress yesterday with ah Eric Schmidt and his confusion of the Hawkeyes and the Hawks.

Phil Gordon: Well, tell us a little bit more about it, Dave.

Dave Margolis: Now, they saw that. You're aware of this, right? i mean it's

Phil Gordon: Well, I am aware of it, yes.

Dave Margolis: you And so I'm sure everybody has seen this, but... He really, and you can tell from his facial expressions, this Eric Schmidt, he really thought he had Jack Smith on the ropes. He really thought he had nailed him.

Dave Margolis: he knew He thought Trump was going to love him. He was going to be the next vice presidential candidate. He had it all right there except all of his facts were completely wrong. End. If you note now, it's coming out that...

Dave Margolis: he was warned that the material the dust justice Justice Department gave him. had not been vetted. And and when they when they delivered it they said, you guys have to vet this because we didn't do it at all.

Phil Gordon: Oh.

Dave Margolis: That's on you. And they they didn't vet it at all. But I think that explains why when they when they held up the poster board, remember, during the hearing.

Phil Gordon: Sure.

Dave Margolis: They pulled it down very quickly. And I think they did that because they knew it would not stand up to any kind of close inspection since it was... complete you know Bushwalk as my dad might say

Phil Gordon: And Dave, I think it was. the senator from Minnesota. uh

Dave Margolis: I'll be sure.

Phil Gordon: Klobuchar. who really... stuck it to him in those hearings and that was uh That was kind of fun.

Dave Margolis: What would it be?

Phil Gordon: Before we...

Dave Margolis: Well, he was trying he was trying to hang on to...

Phil Gordon: Before we leave.

Dave Margolis: you know saying that he didn't screw up and that he wasn't a laughing stock by saying Well, who knew Jack Smith was such a fan of Caitlin Clarke? And he was kind of saying that, like, this guy's into women's sports, you know.

Phil Gordon: happen

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: My question. questioning his manhood like that. But the fact of the matter is here you have Amy Klobuchar. a woman she knew the Iowa Hawkeyes name and she knew that the way in atlanta And she was into it but much more than this guy was.

Phil Gordon: Right.

Dave Margolis: who kind of touts his mutt Yeah, there's machismo.

Phil Gordon: Well, these these false narratives, Dave, that take out a life of their own. as our good friend Mike Harris was telling us. so when he told that story about the Hillary Clinton. thing with the pizza.

Dave Margolis: and Yep. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: restaurant You know, they they take out a life of their own.

Dave Margolis: yeah Yeah. It's amazing. people believe

Phil Gordon: and And, of course, they can end so tragically like that did. I mean, there were people that were killed in that shooting by that lunatic. So, Dave, before we leave the subject.

Phil Gordon: I wrote down one or two jokes that I thought Trevor Noah did that are...

Dave Margolis: Hmm.

Phil Gordon: Had me crack it up for days after it. He does the whole... A history of Martin Luther King, and he talks about King. being jailed in Selma, Alabama.

Phil Gordon: And he said he was in there. sometimes for days without food. And then remember, I said he did such a marvelous Martin Luther King voice impression. So he said, finally.

Phil Gordon: They brought him some food in the jail, these white sheriffs.

Dave Margolis: as a

Phil Gordon: And. Then now Martin Luther King said. I have a dream. We're white people. We'll discover a seasoning.

Dave Margolis: you could say.

Phil Gordon: and I laughed at that for days. Anyway. I am. highly I highly encourage you to see the Trevor Noah special. I also encourage you to see Robert Mack again.

Phil Gordon: I don't think that was the the best showing he's ever had. And he's all over video as well. on YouTube and that. So check out Robert Mack. If you're from Tucson, and I'm sure you know Robert Mack.

Phil Gordon: I was thinking of Robert McDave and the... The days of laughs. Well, laughs are still around.

Dave Margolis: nothing

Phil Gordon: But in the days when it was... Kind of managed by Gary Hood and the open bike on Thursdays. Robert Mack. would come. And Robert Mack would get like 10, 12 minutes.

Phil Gordon: The rest of us would get like a minute and a half.

Dave Margolis: Right, yeah. Excuse me. Hmm.

Phil Gordon: But he deserved it. He was he was he was way better than everybody. So anyway. let's let's

Dave Margolis: By the way, I want to throw this out now. We're in we're in Tucson.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave Margolis: As you mentioned, laughs is the... is the You know, the only comedy club in town.

Phil Gordon: okay cool but Look, look.

Dave Margolis: and we have to say that one of our good friends and a great comic Tony Bruins. All right.

Phil Gordon: Tony Brode.

Dave Margolis: We'll be opening for Whitney Cummings at the Città Rialto.

Phil Gordon: It is the Rialto, Dave, yeah.

Dave Margolis: tucson So if you're in Tucson, you know'll definitely go out and support Tony. Very happy for him.

Phil Gordon: He's such a great guy and he also...

Dave Margolis: Great comic for a long time. uh he's worked very hard and i'm sure he's gonna do great and very happy for him When when when one of our one of our tribe gets a success, we're always very happy for them.

Dave Margolis: So I'm very happy for Tony.

Phil Gordon: Absolutely. often He often features and laughs. And he was just on last night.

Dave Margolis: And maybe we should have Tony on that after the show. We can talk a little bit about his experience. yeah

Phil Gordon: Oh that would be great. Tony was at the open mic last night at Miss Lee's. No doubt rehearsing a few things for the big show at the Rialto. Dave.

Phil Gordon: I think we'll you'll tie the knot on the Trevor Noah and Robert Mack discussion. What what a great kick it was to have Mike Harris join us today. But I know we like to stay.

Phil Gordon: in Arizona, and I know you've prepared a bit of a quiz.

Dave Margolis: I've got a question for you, Phil.

Phil Gordon: I'm ready, sir.

Dave Margolis: Are you ready? This is about October. This is our October quiz. Okay. Okay, it's only like six questions. here Now I would say to anybody watching feel free to play along. And if you'd like to drop an answer in the comments, we'll give Phil a few seconds to think about it. So if you got the answer, go ahead and drop it in the comments and see if you can. if you can match Phil in this quiz.

Phil Gordon: No pressure.

Dave Margolis: Okay, October. On October 10th, 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned. What state did he represent as a senator? And...

Dave Margolis: For a bonus, what was his nickname?

Phil Gordon: Give folks a chance, Dave.

Dave Margolis: ah

Phil Gordon: I know at least part of this. He was the former governor of Maryland.

Dave Margolis: Maryland, right? old Senator, I said.

Phil Gordon: Here's...

Dave Margolis: He was governor, yeah. He was governor, yeah.

Phil Gordon: Governor of Maryland.

Dave Margolis: Yep.

Phil Gordon: I think he would have an ability to for more graft. It does.

Dave Margolis: Good night.

Phil Gordon: If I'm not too far off.

Dave Margolis: And for anybody not as old not as old as we are, he resigned in 1973.

Phil Gordon: All right.

Dave Margolis: He was Nixon's vice president and he resigned because of a bribery. charge against him.

Phil Gordon: While while governor of Maryland and his nickname. Wow. Uh... This is going to be a complete guest, Dave. Uh...

Phil Gordon: sumbitch mean

Dave Margolis: Well, I'm sure he was called that many times His middle name was Theodore, and he went by Ted. And they were sphero Ted Agnew, but nobody ever called him Ted.

Phil Gordon: oh

Dave Margolis: I mean maybe they did in the back rooms of Maryland, but... Not when he became a man.

Phil Gordon: Famous if I may add a famous for his. saying about those who attacked the Nixon administration. Battering nabobs of negativism.

Dave Margolis: you yeah It was also.

Phil Gordon: I thought that was going to be the question when you when you asked.

Dave Margolis: Yeah, he used a lot of words. I remember he used the word pusillanimous And I don't remember what came after that, but I was impressed with that. all right

Phil Gordon: Oh yeah.

Dave Margolis: Going with the quiz, what's the significance, Phil, of the first Monday... in October.

Phil Gordon: First Monday in October. And they were keeping us to politics and not sports. Uh, First Monday in October. I will say we'll give our audience again. Three, two, one.

Phil Gordon: The... ah First meeting of the session of the Supreme Court.

Dave Margolis: You're good. Absolutely, yeah that's right. And there was ah there's a play ah written, actually written by the same guys who wrote Inherit the Wind, called First Monday in October, about that very thing.

Phil Gordon: Very much so.

Dave Margolis: and

Phil Gordon: right

Dave Margolis: Um... the Supreme Court. yeah That's when they start their session. Okay, I'll tell you a sports question. On October 3rd, 1951, Bobby Thompson of the New York Giants hit a home run known as the Shotgun Round the World.

Phil Gordon: Oh good.

Dave Margolis: Two -parter, who was the pitcher and in what ballpark did this moment occur?

Phil Gordon: who I was not yet born in 1951, Dave. what that stated. While I'm thinking, of course.

Dave Margolis: foot

Phil Gordon: I will say... Uh... Let me go for the ballpark first. I think that's going to be a little easier. Uh... The New York Giants.

Phil Gordon: was the team. And.

Phil Gordon: I'm going to guess the polo grounds.

Dave Margolis: That's it. That's the polygrams, yep.

Phil Gordon: Wow!

Dave Margolis: Hmm. The Giants play the ball around.

Phil Gordon: And the picture, this will be. This will be a complete guess. Uh... Wow. Don Larson.

Dave Margolis: and Good guess, right era, but the pitcher was Ralph Branca.

Phil Gordon: oh Now that rings a bell when you say that.

Dave Margolis: ral frank and Have you not seen the documentary, The Shot Heard Around the World?

Phil Gordon: Oh, I have, but that guy...

Dave Margolis: Because there's even a segment in there, they became really good friends after this.

Phil Gordon: Oh.

Dave Margolis: And there's a scene of them like performing together, singing a song together to each other. and help you

Phil Gordon: It's one of the most famous moments of play -by -play radio.

Dave Margolis: No. Yeah, yeah. Russ Hodges, the Giants win the pennant.

Phil Gordon: yeah

Dave Margolis: Okay, what does there's another one. I'm sure you'll get this one, but I'd like to hear you expound on it. What does the term October surprise refer to?

Phil Gordon: October surprise. ah You say sports, Dave, on this?

Dave Margolis: No, I'm saying this is

Phil Gordon: politics show.

Dave Margolis: general question.

Phil Gordon: politics. Yeah, October Surprise generally for refers to... like a piece of news and and to put it in more contemporary terms, maybe even fake news.

Phil Gordon: that a politician's campaign will bring up. about an opponent. That's bad news. you know, like a... uh out of wedlock child i'm thinking uh ah recall, Dave, the revelation about John Edwards.

Dave Margolis: Mm hmm.

Phil Gordon: that he had had the the second family. and a child out of wedlock. I would. think that happened. Late in that campaign is an October surprise.

Dave Margolis: Um, Yeah, and specifically, I think the term first came to to the public when Ronald Reagan had negotiated with Iran.

Dave Margolis: to release Hostages, I think on um Inauguration Day was it not?

Phil Gordon: Okay.

Dave Margolis: He had beaten Jimmy Carter and one of the things that brought Jimmy Carter down was the failure to rescue those hostages.

Phil Gordon: That's right.

Dave Margolis: And so. That wasn't an October surprise, but it was a... ah very late in the campaign or late in the...

Phil Gordon: Yeah. I think there's been many, many that would fall in that category.

Dave Margolis: Yep. Good afternoon.

Phil Gordon: We'll see what happens this October, Dave. Are you predicting?

Dave Margolis: what

Phil Gordon: Anything?

Dave Margolis: I'm not, I don't know. I'm done.

Phil Gordon: All right. and An out -of -wedlock child for Mitch McConnell, Dave?

Dave Margolis: i don't know I'm concerned whether the elections will take place, frankly.

Phil Gordon: Mary, that would be a surprise.

Dave Margolis: And maybe a state emergency and I'll get called off.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: Okay, here's here's one that should take you and a split second to answer, but you can expound a little bit.

Phil Gordon: Well, you have something there.

Dave Margolis: Who is known as Mr. October?

Phil Gordon: Oh, well, here we go, sports. And, of course, we're talking about Reggie Jackson. um Oakland A's, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, I think, for a year.

Phil Gordon: Mr. October, because he generally... Hit his best. in postseason baseball. There was the incredible three -homer. Of course, that was an All -Star game.

Phil Gordon: But he may have hit three home runs in a World Series game, too. He always came to life, especially for the Yankees. bigger -than -life character, a very interesting guy.

Phil Gordon: Reggie Jackson, a wonderful player. And, you know... A wonderful documentary about Reggie Jackson, also on MLB from time to time.

Dave Margolis: Yeah, that would be good to see.

Phil Gordon: And. You know, he was playing in the at least late 60s, if not even the mid 60s. certainly in the minor leagues. and you know encountered a great deal of racism.

Phil Gordon: Rose above it never.

Dave Margolis: Yeah, he was.

Phil Gordon: Court is...

Dave Margolis: um Yeah, he was definitely active in the 60s because if I'm not mistaken, he... Denny McClain won the Denny McClain of the Tigers, the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season.

Dave Margolis: He won his 30th game against the Oakland A's, and I think Reggie Jackson may have hit two home runs off of him.

Phil Gordon: Wow.

Dave Margolis: in that game, which the I think the Tigers wanted on a walk -off for him to get his 30th win.

Phil Gordon: Yeah. and And Reggie was very outspoken even during.

Dave Margolis: Yep.

Phil Gordon: his playing years. And it reminds me in that way of ah a great White Sox player, Dick Allen.

Dave Margolis: There you go.

Phil Gordon: who many felt, you know, the press... gave a hard time to because of his outspokenness. And. he He rose above it as well, posthumously elected to the Hall of Fame.

Dave Margolis: great Yeah, great great great ball player.

Phil Gordon: Reggie Jackson of course in the Hall of Fame.

Dave Margolis: I always think about Reggie Jackson. you i always fun him but he's Very, very strong guy. Very, very muscular. I mean, really was. Now you now you see him. i he looks He looks, compared to the players today, he looks so tiny.

Dave Margolis: steve certificate

Phil Gordon: He does. I will say yeah he looks good, though, when I see him.

Dave Margolis: Yeah, he looks healthy. yeah He just looks small compared to these guys.

Phil Gordon: Yeah, you'll see him occasionally on MLB in a discussion group or something.

Dave Margolis: you know

Phil Gordon: he's generally at the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. he may He may have some official capacity with Major League Baseball these days.

Dave Margolis: Thank you for having us, Jeff.

Phil Gordon: He should. A great man, a great player.

Dave Margolis: Jackie, thanks for us.

Phil Gordon: um Very good right fielder, Dave, I thought. Um... could run, you know, just A jack of all trades. You're just super.

Dave Margolis: Yep.

Phil Gordon: Super.

Dave Margolis: Okay, we've got one more question for you. This one is a little more involved, but you're either going to get, I think you'll get this one actually.

Phil Gordon: Yes. Ooh.

Dave Margolis: Lyricist Johnny Mercer. You know, I'm a big girl. Great American songbook fan. Mercer is known for many great American standards, including one for my baby, blues and light, accentuate the positive. and a hundred more. If you Google him, you'll say, oh, he wrote that song? Oh, he wrote that song? Oh, he wrote that song? Because he wrote so many great songs.

Dave Margolis: He was working on a song when he passed away. The song, he hadn't completed it, the song was discovered by a singer -songwriter of our generation.

Dave Margolis: who completed the song and released the song. Can you tell me the name of this singer -songwriter who took Johnny Mercer's unfinished song. and completed it and let me just say that this person Got into the music business for writing commercial jingles.

Dave Margolis: If that helps you. If it doesn't help you, then you're coming up here.

Phil Gordon: Wow. Uh... Mm -mm -mm. ah ah

Dave Margolis: The most important part of this is the song was called with

Phil Gordon: um This is a tough one.

Dave Margolis: When October Goes. That's the song, When October Goes.

Phil Gordon: SIR! Um... Wow. Uh... Dave I'm just going to take a guess. This is a wild guess You'll have to help me out. I'm blanking on the name, but I think when I describe this, you'll be able to help me.

Phil Gordon: It is the singer and songwriter. who actually wrote the song My Way.

Dave Margolis: That is Paul Anka.

Phil Gordon: That's my guess.

Dave Margolis: One of the good guys. But it's not right.

Phil Gordon: Thank you.

Dave Margolis: It's a very good guess. Very good guys. Because Paul Anka, you know, he broke in like ah as a teen rock and roller back in the late 50s.

Phil Gordon: Right, and then wrote that song, on My Way 4, Frank Sinatra.

Dave Margolis: Um, and wrote and wrote My Way. Although i think but i think he I think My Way was a French song and he wrote the American lyrics. I think so.

Phil Gordon: I see, I see

Dave Margolis: What? The singer -songwriter who jumped in and completed that song when October goes very mellow

Phil Gordon: Wow

Dave Margolis: Very good.

Phil Gordon: Wow

Dave Margolis: Maybe one of our watchers at home will have gotten that one because that was a tough one, but somebody may have gotten it.

Phil Gordon: Uh...

Phil Gordon: I hope so. I hope so.

Dave Margolis: Here we go.

Phil Gordon: Uh... Dave, we've just got a ah few minutes left here. And we were talking about. um like Arizona politics, and of course...

Phil Gordon: The elections are about a month away. It's getting a little nasty, Dave, in some of the races. I often consult the Arizona Capital Times, which is a wonderful.

Phil Gordon: publication out of Phoenix. and covers all. Arizona politics. And it's getting very nasty right now in the... Katie Hobbs, Governor Hobbs running for re -election.

Phil Gordon: versus Andy Biggs. And. There's a fascinating article I encourage people to take a look at. in preparation for this race it's called Predator. protector accusations.

Phil Gordon: cast long shadow over the governor's race. And it has to do with... Branding. um Andy Biggs as a predator protector while he was a congressman.

Phil Gordon: For refusing to. follow up on the Epstein file investigation. And they're both attacking each other back and forth. And that race is getting a little nasty.

Phil Gordon: And another race that I i would suggest people... check in on that's getting a little nasty out there is The... Secretary of State Adrian Fontes.

Phil Gordon: And he's running against state rep Alexander Colliden. And Dave, I just want to mention before we go, we just have a minute or so. But Adrian Fontes, if you recall.

Phil Gordon: was the guest speaker at a Democratic event that you and I were invited to by our good friend Alex Kak. Do you recall Adrian Fantas? He was a very dynamic speaker.

Phil Gordon: And he was. Secretary of State at that point, but I don't know that he announced his run for reelection. And that's another one that's getting very, very nasty.

Phil Gordon: and worth keeping an eye on.

Dave Margolis: Well, maybe we take this up in a little more detail when we do our vex in our next show.

Phil Gordon: All right.

Phil Gordon: We do.

Dave Margolis: Absolutely.

Phil Gordon: And maybe, you know what? It says that we ought to have Alex Gak as a guest on this show. Not only a comic, but...

Dave Margolis: yeah

Phil Gordon: very involved in politics. I think he's actually...

Dave Margolis: yeah

Phil Gordon: than a campaign manager. So lots to talk about. Uh... Our thanks, Dave, to Mike Harris for joining us today. Some very peppy.

Phil Gordon: stand up and some great stories.

Phil Gordon: And coming up.

Dave Margolis: yeah love to have him back he's obviously had some interesting experiences working in tv working in fox for a great part of that time and and rubbing elbows.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave Margolis: English people.

Phil Gordon: How about that in Washington, D .C.

Dave Margolis: It's good stuff.

Phil Gordon: and now back in. arizona and, of course, say he walks to the one foot in the world of sports like we do.

Dave Margolis: yeah yeah

Phil Gordon: And. I'm sorry that I accused him of being a White Sox fan. I just think everyone's a White Sox fan, Dave. yeah

Dave Margolis: I think we he said, are you a White Sox fan too? To me, because he knew you had the shirt on, that so I think that was the conclusion there.

Phil Gordon: ah

Dave Margolis: yeah

Phil Gordon: I see. All right. Well, I've already... sent him by the info to sign up for the fan club.

Dave Margolis: check

Phil Gordon: All right, Dave. Always a pleasure, as always, to work with you. Uh... We'll look forward to our next Laughing Liberally Arizona. Hey, folks, we put the call out there. if you Follow our Laughing Liberally Arizona Facebook page.

Phil Gordon: For comics who want to try some political comedy. to contact us and see what we're all about and join us like, just like Mike did.

Dave Margolis: and

Phil Gordon: And many have, by the way, Dave. I've got an inbox full. on our Laughing Liberally Arizona page. Please follow that page. That's generally where we premiere. The episodes. It's always on Zencaster. We also put the show on Apple Podcasts. and Soon to be Spotify podcasts.

Phil Gordon: And we just. I'm enjoying the heck about being back doing this show, Dave. So what? Contact us if you'd like to do some political comedy. We want to hear from you.

Dave Margolis: yep And.

Phil Gordon: Alright, Dave.

Dave Margolis: i was thinking about we should say well give us a can you give us a recording of your very set, but I think like, well, let's just have them come on here. And if they're good, like Michael Harris, I've never seen him. I thought he was great. And if they're lousy, we'll...

Dave Margolis: will make them miserable.

Phil Gordon: yeah And if they're Tucson comics, we probably know them. There you go.

Dave Margolis: It's true. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: All right. Well, good luck to our buddy, Tony Broon, when he opens. And. for Laughing Liberally Arizona. For Dave Margolis, I'm Phil Gordon saying goodnight.
