Speaker
Alrighty, here we go.

Jason Carter's Drag Racing Journey

00:01:28
Speaker
Welcome everybody to another edition of Speedway Stories with your boys Wally and Johnny Vongs here. Tonight we've got another guest on the show. We've got Mr. Jason Carter and Kelly Carter up on the show tonight. Let's bring them in so they can introduce themselves.
00:01:45
Speaker
Welcome guys to the show. Thank you once again, like I said, for coming up, man. and It's awesome to have have the Hot Rod community and anybody in motorsports come up on the show. Welcome to Speedway Stories and the Nonsensical Network, guys.
00:01:58
Speaker
Hey, how you doing? Thanks for having us on, buddy. Hey, I appreciate you guys coming up. um I'm going to ahead. you You guys introduce yourselves. Tell us a little about about yourselves, and then we'll get into questions, and like I said, we'll start talking motorsports. The floor is your guys. Let's go right ahead.
00:02:16
Speaker
oh I'm Jason Carter, and just a good old boy loves top rods, and I grew up around it my whole life. My dad drag raced and street raced, and um He actually got thrown in jail for it once. I drive dump truck to help finance all this nonsense we do. To
00:02:41
Speaker
just so to us, just good family fun. know what I mean? Oh, yeah, man. It's nice to have the family involved. When you've got a family involved, it makes you kind of feel unstoppable. Like when was talking with Zach and Katie when they were on and stuff. So.
00:03:00
Speaker
i well Well, I said just to us, we like to help out our close friends too. I mean, which we don't have a whole lot of. We keep our circle kind of small.
00:03:12
Speaker
um But, you know, the friends we do have, we try to help out like Corey and Amber and Zach needs something, you know. You know, but my job's open.
00:03:24
Speaker
Just about anybody is a decent person. it's getting harder and harder It's getting harder and harder to find what what core are people like I associate myself with, you guys associate yourself with. It's getting very scarce nowadays to find that small little group that we have that we can still consider friends. and We can not be in the room and they're going to defend us while we're

Challenges with Big Block Engines

00:03:51
Speaker
not there. and and it's getting It's getting to be a scarce scarce thing anymore.
00:03:56
Speaker
Right, right. often and Well, right now I got a big block, 68 Nova. A lot of people have seen it.
00:04:09
Speaker
I mean, it's just an old school grocery car. It's not crazy elaborate.
00:04:19
Speaker
Corey likes to say that you know, a pie roller and stuff like that, but and Yeah. milk yeah onlyability help sorry He likes to call me the millionaire and stuff like that. Well, we all know how Corey is with the bullshitting and picking on everybody. It's just Corey. That's just Corey for you.
00:04:40
Speaker
Right. but well Well, I said, I mean, I got big block 68 Nova, a great big tire, pro street car. Um, it's 500 cubic inch. um Of course, aftermarket block, you know, road axe heads, burlin block.
00:05:00
Speaker
We went through a spell for four years, five years. I went through about two out three motors in three years. Speak of the devil. He said whatever, losers. It got expensive, man. Hell yeah yeah but I mean, anymore. I mean, it's awesome, though, to see It's awesome to see the ah the American muscle still going strong and everything else.
00:05:28
Speaker
Well, i was trying to build the motor with what I had. was trying to use a stop walk. I saved up money and bought the big head, the big KM. I had all the machine work done. One of the three different machine shops. and you i mean We had a lot of trouble for about three years. and I went through several motors. and yeah I finally told her, I said, look, I'm sitting tired of throwing money oh and not even getting a month out of this damn motor and coming a apart. You know what i mean?
00:06:04
Speaker
And I said, I want to build a good motor. want to build a nice motor.
00:06:09
Speaker
And I finally broke down and did that. I built a nice transmission. And it did. It cost me a fortune. And the Nova originally come from my dad.
00:06:23
Speaker
My dad passed away from stage four cancer in 2015. The car sat for year and the car sat for a year It was hard for me to look at.
00:06:35
Speaker
you know I'm saying? Oh, yeah. I get it, man. I understand totally. but Yeah. I got a 65 SS that I was just starting to build when my dad passed away.
00:06:50
Speaker
And I told my wife, I said, you know, I can't let the car sit and run away. ah can't do that. and So we decided to build the car originally in honor of my dad.
00:07:03
Speaker
That's why it says i ah in lovey memory of Jerry Carter on the back of it. Okay. I was wondering i was wondering if what family member that was when I seen pictures and stuff. And then the videos from Six Smokies when you guys went with Corey and stuff took it down there. i was wondering what family member that was, but i wouldn't i want I'm one of those ones I'm not going to pry unless somebody wants to talk about it. That's one of my my things i it's kind of a pet peeve a mine of mine they want me to know they'll say something i'm not gonna pry into the middle of it so well well i said originally we built it and dad always dreamed of you know having a big block blower and you know i i got a little carried away yeah that was my fault um
00:07:52
Speaker
You know, I bought the big-ass 871 blower from Don Hampton out in California and had him custom build the blower to match my motor that I was putting together. And when you build an 11-to-1 big block with a 20% overdriven 871, it makes a shit ton of power, but it's not friendly on the street at all.
00:08:16
Speaker
Yeah. I don't like the street life as much as you you wanted it to like the street life. Right, right. Well, it was constantly running hot. I mean, I even had two 1050 E85 carburetors on it, and God damn it, just wasn't happy with life, man.
00:08:35
Speaker
Really? How hot did it end up getting on you with it with the way you had it set up? What's that? to the How hot did it end up getting on you? when it was set up that way. Buddy, I was constantly shutting it down at 220, 230 degrees.
00:08:50
Speaker
Damn. Wow. I was constantly, yeah I had an electric water pump, the biggest one you can get a hold of, electric fans, and I would pull over, let the pump and the water but the fans and water pump run.
00:09:02
Speaker
I could cool the car down in about six minutes. You what mean? But I just couldn't keep it cool. know I mean? um That sucks, man. That sucks that it didn't work out

Community and Humor in Racing

00:09:12
Speaker
that way. The for that issues.
00:09:15
Speaker
and It wasn't fun anymore because we had to keep stopping. yeah It's almost like being at a drag strip we sitting there waiting in staging lanes with 900 oil downs and then, oh, sorry, folks, take your cars back to the trailer. We're not finishing time trials. That was actually that was my fault. yeah i mean I built a full pledge you know when we started building this thing.
00:09:40
Speaker
yeah i mean like I built a full pledge drag motor. And, know, I mean, it's comical in the comments here. Sorry. That's why I was laughing.
00:09:50
Speaker
He's asking what color underwear is Jason wearing? And he said, Kelly, you need to smile a little more. no I'm sorry. My RBS kiss is really bad. He tells me to smile all the time and I don't, it's just my face. I promise.
00:10:04
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Now that I pulled the blower off. yeah Yeah. I mean, I think we're going change a few things up this year. we're gonna run it on the motor i mean it's still 11 to 1 big block with a big rowdy you know uh solid roller cam in it so it's not a slouch anyways you know just on motor it does very very well you know mean so i think this year we're gonna we're gonna throw it on fuel injection uh direct port injected and um we're gonna put a 4l 80 in it and drop the rear end
00:10:41
Speaker
drop the rear end gear back down um so we can actually enjoy the car, still race the car, play with the car, still enjoy it. You know i'm saying? But still cruise it too. good that that's Good. That's awesome. i welcome correct And it's like what we've seen in talking on Corey's shop talk when we there on Tuesday nights.
00:11:00
Speaker
I mean, it's becoming a thing. With all of us, it's getting to the point, getting tired of going to the races, maybe getting in two or three laps and you're done.
00:11:11
Speaker
with With what's going on now with these drag and drive events or just jumping in like he did for he set up that Hawking Hills thing. Jump in your cars, meet up with a bunch of buddies.
00:11:25
Speaker
Like the old days, like me and Zach were talking about the cruising on the square in Mount Vernon and stuff. meet up on a Friday or Saturday and just go cruise the countryside. You're not going to that with a race car.
00:11:36
Speaker
Well, what we like to do, you know, like that Hockey Hills trip, that was really nice for us because, you know, she was able to drive her car. My daughter was able to pull her truck out and drive it.
00:11:48
Speaker
You know what mean? I was able to run the Nova. Oh yeah. I'm sorry guys. This is my daughter Haley. Yeah. back here youre welcome the Welcome to the show with your mom and dad. Well, she has... I'll let her tell you, actually. 1577

Speaker
GMC C10.
00:12:11
Speaker
Nice. ye Yep. We've redone it from the ground up, more or less. and We've got a lot of time. Was it 18 months? 12 months.
00:12:25
Speaker
I bought a junior year year of high school. We just finished it last summer. Yes, we had. we I think we we took us, what, 18 or 19 months, just under two years to to totally build the truck from the ground up.
00:12:37
Speaker
and that's fricking awesome That Corey, besides this, I'm going read it. Corey said, between you guys, him and Amber and Zach and Katie, you guys can put on your own cruises.
00:12:48
Speaker
No. And then he comments on here. He goes, holy shit, she does talk. So Corey's giving Haley shit. He's always giving Haley shit about not talking and being quiet. Uh-oh. We got to behave. the The famous YouTube man Jimbo's in the chat now.
00:13:07
Speaker
Oh, my God. Jimbo Finchman. You know what? I don't i don't know. I'll shoot you straight. I don't know Jimbo on a personal level.
00:13:21
Speaker
yeah I mean, I talked him a few times ah back when he was put on those races in Marion. Oh, yeah. That's when I got to know him was back that back in that day, man. Yeah, Katie and Zach said hi and Katie said her truck is gorgeous, so they're all in the chat, too. Just give you guys a heads up, the crew's here.
00:13:40
Speaker
All right. Well, well i scott i don't i don't I don't personally know Jim. um i know of him. i've I've chatted with him a little bit when he was racing at Marion, yeah but I didn't actually know him, so I didn't really chat with him a whole lot.
00:13:56
Speaker
I know him through Facebook and Corey's post and stuff like that. yeah i mean, I've never personally sat down you know and chatted with him. seemed like a pretty good guy.
00:14:09
Speaker
Honestly, with Jimbo, what jimbo um you guys can tolerate Corey's joking and nitpicking and bullshitting. Yes, Corey, I'm calling you out on it. It's Corey types, too, is basically what it is.
00:14:23
Speaker
as That's pretty much what it is. Well, yeah. um i notice I've noticed pulled lot shit. been but don I'll tell you what, though. Like I said, you guys are a great group of people that just, you know, me meeting you guys through Corey and everything else, just talking on Facebook and stuff alone.
00:14:43
Speaker
Now to get actually the, you know, yes, it's over a computer, but eventually we'll all get together. And I'll pull my head out of my ass, Corey, where we can all, I can meet everybody in person.
00:14:54
Speaker
besides being on the show. Well, I wasn't joking, man, when I said, you know, yeah my shop's open to everybody, you know what I'm saying? so you know, i mean anytime, i made we don't, you know, you made a comment last time Zach and Katie's live that, well, it gets warm and we'll we'll do this, we'll do that.
00:15:12
Speaker
That's what I said. Yes, I've seen when you see you guys. Well, that's like, I've been meaning to get over to Corey's shop and shit, and like I just... With things going on that I've had going on here recently and over the last year at my house with some personal things and getting the time to go.
00:15:29
Speaker
Plus, I got two daughters that are in school doing high school sports and stuff, so trying to work around that as well. but we yeah time I want to make time hanging back out with Corey and stuff again like we used to do when we worked together Donnelly. We'd get together.
00:15:44
Speaker
and hang out and shit. so For sure. Like I said, I mean, you can ask Corey and Zach both. I mean, you know, I invite them over and do we just we make ass pots of chili and cornbread you know, I fire the smoker up and, well you know, we'll smoke a bunch of pork tenderloin or something, you know.
00:16:01
Speaker
mar Just for the hot rodders to get together then hang out. You know because to me, that means a lot. You know what mean? It ain't so much that You know, I'm really doing anything for anybody. It's just the fact that I enjoy having everybody over.
00:16:20
Speaker
And just to sit down and and eat a meal and cut up and nobody had to worry about, you know, spending a bunch of money to go here or go there. just You know, especially this time of year.
00:16:32
Speaker
It's hard because, you know, everybody starts missing their cars. Everybody starts missing getting out and running their cars and stuff. I think it's nice just to get with everybody and just sit down and shoot the shit. You know what I mean?
00:16:44
Speaker
For sure. Corey, on all capital letters, cook out at Jason's. Ask him how many we've had. We have a bunch of them, dude. I've seen where he's talked about you guys, especially...
00:16:56
Speaker
yeah i mean we we have a bunch of them dude yeah i love i've seen where he's talked about you guys you know especially ah anytime or even just going to hang out, get a chance where you guys get a Saturday, go out and catch some local music. Like he was talking about her just hanging out period. It's it's fricking.
00:17:15
Speaker
Yeah. Corey just said a bunch and it'd be nice. The only downfall is I'd have to go to New York and get Johnny to bring him. So everybody, he could meet in the crowd because he's actually from, from the New York area.
00:17:28
Speaker
Um, he's, uh, I've become good friends with him over the last year and a half through the network that we do on Saturday nights. We have like an open panel deal. Come in, shoot the shit, just bullshit with everybody.
00:17:41
Speaker
And fortunately, me and him have become good friends through through that. And then now he's my co-host on on my shows with me. Happy to And that's the thing.
00:17:52
Speaker
Nope. I blend a lot over here.
00:17:56
Speaker
but you like head people when I think it's good for the hot rodders to get together, man. Honestly, it's nice because you've got Katie. yeah i mean she now Now she's getting into it.
00:18:08
Speaker
you know Amber's been into it. Amber and kept my wife and Kelly used to do the Horsepower and Honey's events together. yep i remember yep that's where i That's actually where I originally met you guys with a couple times out at Pacemakers. You guys were there, come up and said hi to you guys when they had the Horsepower and Honey's.
00:18:25
Speaker
yeah that's where sat that That was one of the most costly mistakes I've made. so horsepower honey. As get is telling her, oh yeah, get in that horsepower honey, honey, you'll you know you'll you'll have a ball.
00:18:39
Speaker
Well, that that turned into a whole freaking whole other deal right there. She ended up loving it. Now she just wants to go faster. Yeah, we are. It sounds like we're all screwed by our wives. The only downfall is but we got our kids involved in this stuff, too. So it only gets deeper. perfect you yeah But doesn't get on the track for the first time, but yeah this summer will be it. she yeah We tried to talk to her last summer to run in her truck.
00:19:07
Speaker
you know. and Well, I mean, just for her getting involved on just being involved in in the hot rod side is a when i look at it and in my eyes. My oldest son and my second oldest daughter, especially my second oldest, she's a fucking gearhead bigger than shit.
00:19:24
Speaker
She's like my right-hand person. so yeah And then my wife, of course, she's into the motorsports side, and it's like, okay, guys, there's only, you know, we got to make this happy medium.
00:19:36
Speaker
kind of worked out for all of us. Yeah, exactly. You've got three of you in it, but your wallet's this thin, but it needs to be this thin. Hell, it needs to fill the house. Forget the yeah thing in this the house full of it. But still, it's an it's enjoyable when we can include you know our loved ones, let alone our friends. you know It's freaking amazing to see that chip. Of course, man. but and Honestly, what we've learned is Yeah, I mean, I make jokes all the time. It's like, she don't give me shit about buying a car park because when the parks show up, she don't know if they're mine or they're hers.
00:20:13
Speaker
not be careful yeah She may end up just taking them for herself and be done. Well, weve we've done plenty of that. um I promise you. She's got a, I wouldn't say ah fast GTO, but she's got a nice GTO.
00:20:28
Speaker
that that is very respectful. it just It's a 7.0 car. You know, with factory air, factory heat, and she runs that thing all over Hell's Creation. She drives it to work.
00:20:42
Speaker
In the summertime, she has a ball with it. And it's it's a 7.0, you know, full body, full interior. You know, it's naturally aspirated. Got a little stroker motor in it, but she...
00:20:55
Speaker
She loves that car. And that's what we started racing. Well, I think I backed. We started racing with the Camaro. Yes. When it was as well as molasses. Yeah, the Camaro wouldn't get out its own way when she started racing.
00:21:08
Speaker
Had a factory 305 in it. Oh, a dirty car motor. oh yeah i help Yeah, I tell you what, dude.
00:21:20
Speaker
Anybody that knows these 90s Camaros, like 92 like her, yeah one knows that it came with like a 270-something gear in it and had a 305 in it with a 700 R4.
00:21:34
Speaker
And anybody that knows them knows they won't get out of their own freaking way. Oh, yeah. That's the truth. There are numerous videos out there of me up next to Erica Green. And it looks like I'm sitting still. I'm not even going anywhere. and yeah She's gone. She's at the end. of well and And the thing with Erica, the thing of it is, let's see. I love I love Jeff and and Erica to death.
00:21:58
Speaker
But when you got when you had the shot, got the shot back in you and it's a tax write-off, it makes it it makes it a little harder for us people to kind to hang with those guys.
00:22:09
Speaker
You know, going to hang with there're we're almost in that category, but you know. Well, I good way to say well i can't really say a whole lot because ah my company does back these cars.
00:22:21
Speaker
Well, I get it, but I'm just saying the way that she had the access to more of the high horsepower and stuff. She had her own dyno. She had her own dyno. She had her own tuner.
00:22:35
Speaker
yeah i mean so that That right there in itself is a huge, huge difference.

Technology and Event Revival Challenges

00:22:40
Speaker
data yeah when you When you have your own dyno in-house and your own tuner in-house and you have your own mechanics in-house and stuff, i mean that that makes a huge, huge difference.
00:22:52
Speaker
For sure. mean but But you know what? I can't say nothing bad about them because you know Jeff and Erica... You know, Erica, God bless her, took Kelly right in. You know, like she was her best friend, man.
00:23:07
Speaker
And showed the horsepower honeys and, you know got her interested in the cars and got her pumped up. You know i mean, Erica did a lot for her.
00:23:18
Speaker
Well, they she did a lot for a lot of people, not just, you know, yeah people brought them in. Like I said, they're great people. And what she had planned for to get the women involved in the kids, you know, the daughters and stuff, the nieces, the nephews, you know, and shit like that to get involved.
00:23:36
Speaker
And now to see it kind of go away kind of sucks because it was kind of enjoyable. Everybody was out there as a family day. Well, I think that's or Like she said, she learned a lot when I was just racing hey i learned you know they didn't They didn't push me. I didn't feel like I was out of my place. I didn't feel like you know I go out here at these no prep races and these guys looking at me like, well, she doesn't belong here. And now I have to step up. But I really didn't know what the hell I was doing to begin with.
00:24:07
Speaker
So she made she always made everybody feel welcome. and will they all Like all the OG first pair honeys. It was a great weekend when we went. Yeah. Corey, to answer that question, it was Kelly that set the computer up. It wasn't it wasn't Jason. I'll tell you that now. I'll tell on Jason now. right
00:24:29
Speaker
okay To be fair, to be fair, and for some reason, my email was not working, but I was trying. Yeah, he was. I sent him like four different invites just to try to get it, make sure it wasn't on my end. And my my email is was not working.
00:24:47
Speaker
My email was like, yeahp I'm leaving the chat. He's gone by your view. like How did you pick your view of the garage? yeah Well, Corey's talking about that too, the way you got it set up, the view of yeah how you got everything angled around on the computer too.
00:25:02
Speaker
Tell him the phone is sitting on the tool cart. You heard it, Corey, right there. Jason said. The phone is broughtpped the phone is propped up on the tool card, Corey.
00:25:13
Speaker
Creativity, I respect it. Zach's in here says, don't feel bad, Jason. Katie set up ours, too. so i mean Hey, man. I tell you right now, I'm computer illiterate. is and I can order parts like a mother.
00:25:28
Speaker
I can order parts like no other. You're like the rest of us. don't blame that at all. I've been ordering parts. I'm screwed, man. yeah but yeah but but Yeah. The Horsepower Honey's was it was neat to see how many families when it was combined with the you know especially at pacemakers.
00:25:49
Speaker
They had you guys there and they'd see everybody. so We got to give Corey prop because Corey tried to bring it back.
00:26:01
Speaker
Corey actually contacted Erica um if i vaguely remember uh cory tried to cory contacted erica got the okay you know to use the horsepower honey's name or whatever and actually try to bring them all back together you know we went know mean um but like yeah you worked for that night yeah but forty Corey said 44 of them and that was two years ago. Yeah, I remember when he put that on and everything. You guys showed out for for that night. the day but i i
00:26:39
Speaker
I just wish that more of the other girls took Corey as serious as they did

Financial and Safety Concerns in Racing

00:26:48
Speaker
Erica. You know what I'm saying? I think they were kind of looking at it as it was a one-time thing and that ain't what Corey was going for. Corey was actually going to keep it going.
00:27:00
Speaker
You know what saying? in And I don't think they real a bunch of them didn't realize that. know what I mean? Because I enjoyed it because she was able to get in where she was comfortable.
00:27:14
Speaker
Then I screwed up and got her mixed up in the no prep. God, that was the dumbest thing I ever did. and she fell in she dude she fell in love with the So she started she started running that 7.0 class and no prep.
00:27:32
Speaker
And it was funny because in the beginning, you know, everybody looked at her, looked at the car and was like, ain't worried about her.
00:27:43
Speaker
Well, then when she tricked the living shit out of them and then as she had them covered. Yeah. What the hell? What's going on? Well, then we quit. well there we could It got to the point we couldn't and play the game no more because she'd go up there and the drivers would be like, hey, yeah you know I'm racing you. Give me two lengths or whatever. and they're like, piss on you. We've seen that car run.
00:28:04
Speaker
Or you got somebody standing behind you going, and don't let them talk you into that. I raced that car. It's better than it sounds. Well, I mean, that's the thing. i think with the i i personally, I kind of like the index stuff.
00:28:18
Speaker
I also like that watching the heads up stuff. But it's getting to the point now, I got a buddy of mine, Dustin Hitting. He runs the 7-0 index, a lot of the no prep stuff. so And I've had him here on the show.
00:28:32
Speaker
Yeah, so she's probably lined up against him a few times then doing that. but Good possibility. But I've noticed here lately a lot of the classes, like this little gangster that Nitrous Express, Poland and Jimmy Dale are putting on,
00:28:49
Speaker
It's going back to index racing, the 530 class. It's a 530 index class is the way I look at it. I think on that note, a lot of people are realizing that 530 index, a lot of people are starting to realize that it takes a fast car to run 530s.
00:29:08
Speaker
yeah i mean It takes a lot of money and lot of power to run that 530 class. And to get below into that four-second range, people are realizing that it takes a badass chassis car with a shit ton of money thrown at it to run that fast.
00:29:27
Speaker
Yep. Well, and that's like doing the ten o the index classes. ay it They need to do more of those because that gives everybody a chance to get, even if it's a beginner, gives them a chance.
00:29:40
Speaker
Okay, you got a 13-second index class. First time racers. There's a freaking class for them to jump in if they want to get their feet wet at a style of heads up racing. Just don't break out over the, you know, break out of the 13 second zone or 14 second or whatever it is. But yeah, it's, it's starting to grow. It's, I see it's starting to kind of come back around with the index stuff, but it's just the money. It's just, it comes out money, man.
00:30:09
Speaker
and And, and, and the other thing is is, you know, like me and Corey's talk, You know, I mean, it it got to the point where like when she went we was loading her GTO up to go racing and it was like, dude, one night, you know, the time you pay the $200 entry or whatever it is, you know, that night or whatever at that no prep, you know, the time you pay that, pay for fuel, get in the car there and all that shit, one night, man, it's $500, $600. Easy.
00:30:35
Speaker
Oh, yeah. You know what I mean? Not including if you didn't forget food or something like that or whatever. You know what I'm saying? Right. And like you said. Real quick. Like you said, that $600, $700 is for one pass if you lose first round.
00:30:49
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I mean, at least now. At least now. $600, $700, you go cruising. yeah Yeah. We can go cruising for a week for that. Yeah. You know what I mean? Right. I get it. I mean, it's just sad it's come down to, like, everything.
00:31:06
Speaker
If you don't got the deep pockets to enjoy what you want other than what's going on in the community here with the cruising together, doing drag and drives, yeah, if you're going to be full-time racing, you got to be a billionaire. You'll become a millionaire within a weekend. I mean, it's just insane what they spend to race.
00:31:29
Speaker
Yeah. Taking my car out because you want to bounce off the walls three times before you get to the finish line. you think I say we're going to truly enjoy something. It, of course, as most of us know, it it shouldn't feel like that.
00:31:46
Speaker
Right. It should. And that, that was the other thing about it. You know, know this is going to sound cheesy from a husband's standpoint, know what mean? But I was starting to notice that like in the no prep, which I know cars get swirly. I mean, hell, her GTO has gotten swirly before, know what mean? But she left out of, you know what mean? And and,
00:32:05
Speaker
From a husband's standpoint, I don't worry about my wife when she's on damn racetrack. Okay? I don't care if it's a street race or a track race. I don't care what it is. You know, me being a starting line, I try to watch the car. I try to watch everything going on.
00:32:21
Speaker
But I don't like when the competitor is so no-holds-barred that they'll put their car sideways and not let out of the goddamn thing. Yeah.
00:32:33
Speaker
yeah mean it's like okay now you're To me, now you're saying, okay, I don't care about your life. I don't care about your car. I don't give a shit about you long as I beat you.
00:32:45
Speaker
and and That I don't like. you know i mean It's like, okay, I understand you want to win. Everybody wants to win, dude. That's racing. but but things no you don't need to You don't need the Superman shit, man. You feel your car getting sideways, get the fuck out of it. I agree totally. I hate seeing that shit, man.
00:33:02
Speaker
don't care who you are. And that and that's all that that was the big reason I pulled her out of the no prep. I've seen so much of that going on that I said, man, you know, I just don't want you hurt.
00:33:16
Speaker
You know what mean? And then the sad part is we just we're trying to finish building this

Family Joy and Community Events

00:33:20
Speaker
Camaro. It's got a cage in it. You know what I mean It's got six-point cage, and it's got a bunch of I've seen the pictures in progress following on Facebook, man, its especially in motors coming along the yeah most motor trains are in haley zach's giving you shit says you need to settle down you're getting wound up too much back there man
00:33:47
Speaker
well hey i'm gonna go i'm gonna go see a a fish by a water bowl i'm gonna let you let you guys talk to her for a minute check you that hammer a monster he won't do a garage burnout i need or i well well You know what?
00:34:03
Speaker
if i wouldn't have but If I wouldn't have blown the fuel line on the Nova, I would take that bet, but since the car is dumping fuel out of it, I will not take that bet at this time.
00:34:16
Speaker
Understandable. I'll let like her tell you about the Camaro that we're putting together. Alrighty. Oh, yeah. That's it. Phyllis is the boss lady.
00:34:31
Speaker
Nope, not the boss lady. Half time, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. So I just drive the car.
00:34:37
Speaker
But yeah, I say I bought the Camaro. When did we buy it? 2016, I think. one big I think ah found it over in Newark and just i had to have it because it was my high school dream car. It's the one I wanted in high school.
00:34:51
Speaker
Oh, shit. Yep. So like you said, we started out with a little 305 motor on it. It was slurred shit and it didn't go anywhere. Now we're doing this whole LS1 with the ACES EFI thing on it and we're hoping to get some power out of it. You got bit by the horsepower bug like everybody else that did. That's what happened. I think we have got some horsepower, but I think this one's going to have a little more. He said that we're planning on 600 horsepower?
00:35:23
Speaker
No. Well, a little over six. um g yeah The GTO makes 560 to the ground on naturally aspirated.
00:35:36
Speaker
but But the car is heavy. People don't realize how heavy that car is. yeah that call That car is ah a little over 3,800 pounds.
00:35:47
Speaker
Damn. Yeah, that GTO is heavy as hell, man. but like it it On e eighty five it made 560 to the ground, and it runs 7 0s. And then we switched over this setup.
00:36:08
Speaker
The car is a lot lighter, too. People don't realize that. the The Camaro is actually only 3,100 pounds.
00:36:16
Speaker
So, you know, dropping 700 pounds in weight and add an extra 100 horsepower to the tire. know what mean? Plus, nobody believes it, but the GTO is on a factory 308 rear gear.
00:36:32
Speaker
Really? Yes, sir. Yeah. Let's see. yeah see I want to give a shout out because Corey brought up something. Haley and Kelly, um,
00:36:45
Speaker
Shout out to you, and I want to shout it out too because my wife works in the health healthcare care field. Thank you, guys. I appreciate for all what all you do. I know it ain't an easy job, especially my wife works in a nursing home, so I know the ins and outs of that aspect of it. Anybody that works in the health field deserves a mad shout out.
00:37:05
Speaker
And Jason, I got another comment for you here. It's from Talon. It says, hey, look, Rich Boy Jason's on the big screen with a laughing emoji.
00:37:16
Speaker
To be fair, talons know look faster than mine. if And then then Jimbo says, my Fairmont is 3,800 pounds too when I'm sitting in it in any way.
00:37:30
Speaker
my God, Jimbo, leave it to you, man.
00:37:35
Speaker
behind that That, I mean, that is something else, especially for that GTO to have basically the factory gears in it still. It's pretty cool as hell to see.
00:37:46
Speaker
Yeah, that's and it's on a 26-inch tall tire, too. took us two years to figure it out. Yeah. So two years of her racing that car to actually, because I came from, know, solid axle, you know, leaf spring setup or coilover setup, four link, stuff like that.
00:38:05
Speaker
So I had never dealt with independent suspension. And i'll give a shot I'll give a shout out right now to Sean Graham, man, because if it wasn't for him, I'd still be fighting that car.
00:38:17
Speaker
um I had a total backwards thought process on the rear suspension of that car on how to get it to hook and stay planted on a no prep surface.
00:38:30
Speaker
And I'm so used to my old school stuff. I can make my Nova go down any damn road. You know what saying? But her GTO was just fighting me to the bitter end. I'm like, what am I doing wrong?
00:38:44
Speaker
I could get the car to either 60 foot really good and blow the tires off into 200, or I could get a 60 foot not worth a shit, and then it would...
00:38:56
Speaker
Go past the 200. I was like, what in the hell is going on? And Sean Graham, man, pulled me to the side at Pacemakers one night. And I said, man, you know, that car is breaking loose, but 300 foot. I said, yeah, i know. I can't figure it out.
00:39:09
Speaker
And he told me flat out, he said, man, he said, you're thinking about it wrong. He said, you need we need to drive that tire in the ground. He said, go back, tighten your shots up, and put more air in the tire.
00:39:21
Speaker
I'm like, are you serious? He's like, swear to God it'll work. He said, just do a little bit bigger burnout. He said, you'll be fine. And we came back up next round because she won that round. We come back up next round, and ah lo and behold, man, I put like five clicks in each shock.
00:39:37
Speaker
And put we ran the tires up to 18 pounds and did that damn thing. Went right down Broadway, fastest pass ever made. i was like, holy shit.
00:39:48
Speaker
Yeah, i've never I've never, I mean, I've watched the Leafs spring cars race and stuff, but never, it's always been a Ford link or a ladder bar setup or something like that that I've been around and the coin overs and stuff like that.
00:40:02
Speaker
But right these guys with these leaf spring cars and gals, it's freaking insane the way they make those things stick. Well, hers ain't leaf spring. Her GTO is actually coil spring independent suspension.
00:40:15
Speaker
Oh, really? oh Yeah. Yeah. That's why I was fighting. Yeah, but now my Nova is tubbed, but it's still leaf spring, buddy. Is it?
00:40:26
Speaker
Hell yeah ye keeping yeah. Keeping it OG. Keeping the leaf springs under the back. Yep, I got leaf springs with sliders. I just put the sliders on last year, matter of fact.
00:40:38
Speaker
um Thanks to Sean Graham again, because him and I was talking about it, and ah he said, dude, put sliders on that thing and you'll love it. And wasn't man. He wasn't lying.
00:40:50
Speaker
We put the new mono leaf springs on and put the sliders on it and readjusted the shocks, and it hooks up very well, man.
00:41:01
Speaker
That's awesome. Talon said truck springs for the win.
00:41:10
Speaker
i don't have truck springs. I got monos, but no. but they they They weren't really good for me. For what I do, I'm not running fast either. i mean I'll shoot you straight. My my big block, um to be totally truthful, it probably makes 800 I mean, that's automotive.
00:41:31
Speaker
You know what mean? That's probably max pushing it hard. You know what i mean? That's probably all it makes. but You know what I'm saying? but i mean so Nothing that we own is what I would call super fast.
00:41:45
Speaker
Nothing. You know i mean? But I tell you what, we have a whole lot of fun. Oh, yeah. thats I mean, that's the thing anymore is the fun. it growing up Growing up and I know
00:42:01
Speaker
Oh, hold on. I got a shout out. Thanks for joining in on any of mine on Tuesday night. Need someone new to make fun of. Yes. Check in on Tuesday nights. We broke garage.
00:42:12
Speaker
It will, uh, he got, we have shop talk with Corey on there. Check out out on Tuesday nights at eight o'clock. So it's on Facebook and YouTube. Um, but yeah, they, uh, racing anymore growing up and the way it's become, it but we're back to it again. It's become a money thing and it's,
00:42:30
Speaker
Taking the fun out of trying to enjoy going to the racetrack anymore, in my opinion. I mean, I love going every now and then and catching up with people I know that's still hot and heavy in the racing. But it's just got to the point it's not as fun.
00:42:46
Speaker
Right. It's missing something. Well, I'll tell you what. why but Last year was the was the best time we've had, um in my opinion.
00:42:58
Speaker
Because we were first time I've gotten you on a vacation of any kind in like 15 years. Yes. But with the Delaware holds a cruise once a month to dollar cruise.
00:43:10
Speaker
Yeah. And ah we've we've been going to that a lot you to the cruise up down Delaware strip and all that stuff. And we actually had more fun, in my opinion, even though i was getting my ass handed to me out on the street by my fucking wife's GTO.
00:43:27
Speaker
um um Sleeping in the light. Well, I had the blower on the car and she loved, folk I had street towel. Actually, the first time I had the slicks on it and she loves pulling up next to me the light because her car was Well, just 60 foot right out of the hole from the light and go.
00:43:47
Speaker
And got a fender of mine I had the blower on it. You know, I'll make 11, 1200 horsepower. You know what I mean? You're breaking the tires list as soon as you smash that throttle. It never failed, man. She pulled next to me the light.
00:44:02
Speaker
I could hear her start building the car up on the foot brake. I'm like, oh, shit, here we go. Yeah, i mean, the yeah the light the light would drop, and she would put about two car lengths on me while was spinning.
00:44:17
Speaker
And soon as banged second, I'd let out and step back into it and slingshot fire. But it was like... But the video just shows the part where I was winning. Of course, my friends are behind us in the car. There's no proof that he ever went right for me.
00:44:33
Speaker
yeah So you're on the you're on the outside looking in on this one, Jason. Sorry. My so-called friends would it were really helped me out a lot with those videos.
00:44:48
Speaker
but But you know what? We had a ball doing it, though. yeah and that And that's what I started enjoying. and You know, is being out with her and being out with her and her truck. You what mean? And just...
00:44:59
Speaker
That's like we went on that crew for a Hockey Hill cruise. Dude, I was behind them. I didn't want to be in front of them because I was enjoying cruising my car with my daughter and my wife up in front of me.
00:45:12
Speaker
was like as a family, just cruising. You know i mean? And having fun. It's like you hit in a way it's the, uh, you hit the lottery with having that, that feeling being in front of you like that, man. very I'm looking forward to that with my, especially my older two and everything here, hopefully this summer that we'll be able to do the same thing.
00:45:33
Speaker
And I mean, it's great. um it I mean, it's cool to see their reactions when we go to the racetrack, dirt track racing or anything like that, anything we involve racing, they're always smiling ear to ear.
00:45:46
Speaker
um But to get them more involved now, like, like they want to be, it's going to make, it'll make me feel like I, I just hit that multimillion dollar power billion dollar power bowl.
00:45:58
Speaker
Once I see them with their own rides and stuff. Well, yeah and that that's something a lot of people may not understand, but like, you know, I used to do all the racing and she was always in the pits with me, you know what I'm saying? and it's, ah it's,
00:46:14
Speaker
it's nice to turn things around a little bit. You know what mean? Instead of me being stressed all the time about, you know i got work on the car, got to race the car, I do this, do that. know what mean? I actually started enjoying going to the racetrack with her as a driver and me just taking care of the car.
00:46:33
Speaker
You know what I mean? Because it was actually, it's it's as fun to watch her, know, experience the rush of going down.
00:46:43
Speaker
You know what i mean?
00:46:46
Speaker
it's it's it's it's really It's really fun for me to watch them get out there and and smile and be happy. like wait Like you did. Like you did when you were doing everything. And now now it's a whole family affair instead of just basically focusing on on ourselves.
00:47:04
Speaker
Now that we got somebody, you know, kind of handing it down to, which is awesome. And it makes it even more exciting when your kids want to get involved. that Well, can't. The wife's a bonus, but it's an extra bonus when you've got at least one of your kids that wants to be a part of that that hobby with you. It makes you feel really good.
00:47:25
Speaker
Well, primarily, I'd love to see sometime this summer. yeah I mean, because I plan on turning her loose in the Camaro. you know because The Camaro is going to probably run 620s is what I'm guessing, six thirty s yeah mean It ain't super fast by no means, but You know, it is supercharged LS.
00:47:48
Speaker
It's got a badass cam in it. It's got nice set of AFR heads. She's got low enough gear. You know what I mean? The Camaro will run. It'll run pretty good. And it's a lot lighter than the GTO.
00:47:59
Speaker
So it's go it's going to respond really well, I think. And it's got badass suspension all the way around it, all adjustable. um I'd love to see Haley make a few hits of the GTO.
00:48:13
Speaker
And with Kelly, you make a few hits on the Camaro. You know what i mean? That well i think could be ah a good time because because the GTO, we have it down to a science. So it's not really a whole lot of work anymore.
00:48:25
Speaker
now you've got a new learning curve with the Camaro coming up, getting done. You guys get to put your brains together and learn together. Well, actually actually, the Camaro is still the solid axle with coilovers all the way around.
00:48:39
Speaker
So I can adjust that to what I'm used to. Gotcha. Yeah, mean, that so that's that the Camaro is going be more of what I'm used to, you know, on the Nova side of things.
00:48:52
Speaker
Yeah, i mean, so that that that car should actually work really. I mean, I'm not saying the first pass out is going work. I'm saying, but but we should be able to get it figured out pretty darn fast.
00:49:03
Speaker
Jimbo's got a good comment. it hit just like what you said, says I've never had more fun racing than pitting for Rachel and watching her turn on wind lights. It's a hard feeling to explain. It kind of sucks now. All our trophies in my man cave and I, and like one for me.
00:49:19
Speaker
Hey, don't, don't feel bad again bur because going to tell you right now, i got an ass ton of trophies in my office in the shop here. And the biggest trophy in that shop belongs to her. That's how much as tall, almost as tall as I am. soing you it's like six foot Yeah.
00:49:39
Speaker
but The biggest trophy in that show in that office belongs to her.
00:49:45
Speaker
You know what mean? to take it apart to get it home. Yeah. yeah i mean so that that that He's right, man. That is the best feeling in the world, dude. Just sitting back and letting your wife or your I can't wait to tell my daughter.
00:49:58
Speaker
yeah i mean Just make a pass. you know i mean cause it's like It's a different different feeling,

Teamwork and Camaraderie in Racing

00:50:03
Speaker
man. A lot guys need to explain it. That's like the first time my son, my oldest got to run his very first rough truck a couple years ago during the summer race at Croton.
00:50:15
Speaker
He's always talked about talked about it. And me and my cousin threw together fucking a beater Colorado and said, here you go. Here's your first time. And he's hooked. But my second oldest, she's 17 now and she is biting it to bit. My project I got actually out backs actually for her this year. I'm building a Jeep Cherokee.
00:50:35
Speaker
Um, for her to race during the rough truck races. And then I got one. Then I got one. I'm going to street it. It's a five speed four liter. I'm going to leave it alone, not do nothing with it.
00:50:46
Speaker
I'm going to just pack the family in it and go cruising and yeah hopefully meet up with you guys. some this song so you Some of these cruises and I'll just bring the five speed Jeep out just to have a good time. But yeah, I'm building building her.
00:50:59
Speaker
kind of a little overstocked Grand Cherokee for the rough truck racing season. So we're all three, probably the three of us will take turns depending on who's feeling what that, that week of the race that we go to, but still it's, well, going to tell you, I'm going to tell you one thing, you know, I, I, when I got her in a race and my, I had one, one rule that to us, when we went racing, I didn't give a shit about when,
00:51:28
Speaker
um when when we When I got her into it, the rule was, win or lose, you come off the track smiling. I don't give a damn if we lose. I don't give a damn if we break the car. I don't care. You come off the track smiling.
00:51:44
Speaker
You know what I mean? Because yeah no arguing, no yelling, no carrying on. on Because when when you come off the track pissed off because you lost, to me, that makes you a sore loser and you shouldn't be out there start with.
00:51:58
Speaker
Right. If you're only there for the winning aspect of it instead of
00:52:05
Speaker
you're absolutely not going to win this. And you how many rounds did I win sometimes? You know, and i and what I mean, it's nice when you do get those wins, but it's like you guys were talking. It's the pure enjoyment that you were having, Kelly, of making those passes going down the track or just driving your car in general down the track that you guys has worked so hard to get to where you could do that.
00:52:30
Speaker
And then the wedding was just like the bonus on top of that. It's like, oh, hell yeah. we And every time I would come back, he would teach me. He would teach me something else about what I did and how to fix it. And, you know, just it would work. That's awesome. And I've seen i've seen firsthand, and I'm sure you guys have seen it, where somebody's, you're,
00:52:50
Speaker
you're like my wife was a sponge. She's willing to learn and take in what, you know, to make herself better. And and that's it in anything. But when it comes to the racing side, she, she's a sponge. My two oldest are sponges went into it. They don't,
00:53:06
Speaker
Get pissy. They get upset. Oh, we didn't do good. Like you said, no, it don't matter. Did you have fun doing what you're doing? And they're like, yes. I said, that's all that matters to me because you're doing something you wanted to do.
00:53:18
Speaker
That last race with the horsepower of honeys. I forget what you told me. It was something about the light. Oh, she was, she was making sandwiches at the light. I was. And so he, the way he described it to me this day, after or three years, I come back and I'm like, did you see that?
00:53:35
Speaker
yeah one that yeah You know, I tried. know, I mean, it's hard from a racer's standpoint. It's hard to explain to somebody else how you think they should race. All right.
00:53:50
Speaker
So I tried to a lot. I tried a lot to let her do trial and error to figure herself out and figure the car out. You know what mean? But finally, I looked at her on one race. I said, look,
00:54:03
Speaker
you can't trust a car, you can't trust a mechanic working on the car, honey, we're done. So do me a favor. Trust me. Trust the car. And to keep that bitch to the floor. And she's like, okay.
00:54:16
Speaker
She went out, kept to the floor. Everything went fine. She come back shaking her ass off. but yeah yeah yeah But, you know, it was funny because she's like, it worked. I'm like, it will work. We just got to work together to make this work.
00:54:32
Speaker
You know? But it's, and and honestly, I had a pit crew there. You what mean? When Kelly was racing, I had Haley back here, man. You know, anytime we made shock adjustments, air pressure adjustments,
00:54:46
Speaker
I never had to do none of that. I could look at her and say, hey, this is what I need. She would get under there, just the shocks, just the air pressure on the tires. Then she would write it down to what it was at and on her and her phone.
00:55:00
Speaker
So we knew, you know I'm saying? have a log the phone for what, you know, in case, ah go back to that if it's working. Hell yeah, that's awesome. Then we had the laptop hooked to the car.
00:55:11
Speaker
So we knew, plus we had draggy in it. So between the laptop and the draggy, we knew whether we did better or worse or whatever on the no prep stuff. We knew what were doing.
00:55:22
Speaker
We had everything figured out. And it it made it nice, honestly. It was honestly, I had a ball because she was driving. i was i was able to think about it. and i was able to watch the car.
00:55:35
Speaker
And I had her making the adjustments that I wanted done. know what mean? So it it was a family thing, and it was a damn good time. It really won't. And that's what makes it makes it all worth the while when it's all said and done after those long so Friday or Saturday nights or long weekends.
00:55:53
Speaker
You work as a one. You you show up as a family. you You work as a family. There's no division in between. you need to do this. You need to do this. This person needs to do that. Everybody was involved in between.
00:56:07
Speaker
and I mean, you see that with a lot of the people, but you also see People don't see the other side of it. Get the hell away from me. i don't want you around even though it's somebody's trying to help or trying to learn.
00:56:19
Speaker
and and they And people wonder why the younger generations or their significant others or their kids don't want to get involved. They take the shit too serious. yeah Well, only that, I like people like Corey.
00:56:34
Speaker
You know, he's a perfect example. You know what mean? It was one of those deals where I loved him being at the racetrack whenever we ran because we even if we was winning or losing or he was winning or losing, you what mean? When we were done, we'd all just get together and say say the hell with the cars. Let's have a few. let but Yeah. Let's have some frosty pops as Corey calls it.
00:57:02
Speaker
Have some frosty pops and let's make some food on on on the griddle. You what mean? And, and that's where that's To me, man, that's what that's why I'm enjoying the cruises, because we get to be with everybody.
00:57:17
Speaker
ah still love drag racing. I know she does. I love it, too, but I just don't, like you were saying earlier, we don't have the deep pockets to be competitive with these classes out there now.
00:57:30
Speaker
No, no, but I would like to, you know, the Camaro being... The Camaro having 100 more horsepower than the Goat and being, what, 700 pounds lighter and being a lower rear gear and all that, I would like to get her out there a few times this year and let her run the car and just have a good time with it. And i'm hoping Corey and Amber come out, you know, just not to compete.
00:57:57
Speaker
I don't give a shit. We just go for a test and tune, man. You know what mean? Get everybody together. Get everybody together. make a good old time. Katie never gets her car done. Yeah, Katie gets her car done. She can come out.
00:58:11
Speaker
Yeah, i mean, it's just one of those fields like... suppose that can do too. Yeah, Zach can do all right. We'll bet Zach Frosty Pops who wins. yes Corey just said in the comments they'll be at Test and Tunes.
00:58:24
Speaker
so yeah yeah yeah Yeah. That's what I'm saying. That's what I i would like to do. yeah i may Get everybody together for the Test and Tune event or something or go out on a Saturday and just it's have a good friggin' time, dude. and you know i mean I don't care if we bet. it' like Me and my buddies used to bet cheeseburgers. I bet you a damn Cody dog and I'll whack your ass.
00:58:46
Speaker
Just the good old fun shit like that. Just shit like that. Or joe bag a 12-pack of beer or some shit. You know what I mean? something off the wall there. so Right. and And that also that also it gets you out there having fun, but you're not also running your shit to death.
00:59:05
Speaker
You know, it's like I told old Jimbo Finchner. and Finchner. Fishing your fish. I told him, because he was making a comment, he wanted to race on the Dragon Drive, so I said, I'll race your ass.
00:59:19
Speaker
You know what mean? yep I remember seeing that. oh yeah yeahp yeah yeah i mean do i give a shit like Do I give a shit if I get my ass stomped? No. I don't give a damn. I'll turn that loose there.
00:59:33
Speaker
and that' and that's That's the thing that I'm learning here real quick in this group, that core with Corey's group and everything and you guys in it. You're definitely all old school, have want to have a good time with with the hot rods.
00:59:51
Speaker
It's not one of those, well, we're going to be this and this and this and this. No, let's go have fun and hang out. so Yes, Jimbo, he said racing for hamburgers.
01:00:03
Speaker
He just commented in the thing saying, we are racing for hamburgers. Actually, in Jimbo's, it'd be racing for corndogs. He likes round things.
01:00:16
Speaker
yeah we boy We know that. Yes, Corey, you know what I meant, buddy. Yeah, it's just just the peoples together, but it's a good group of people, man.
01:00:26
Speaker
That's like I got a good group of core people when I go to rough truck races, but I've also got a good core people outside ah in drag racing. I've got a few in dirt track racing that I do.
01:00:38
Speaker
yeah i mean, it's, it's all fun. It's all fun and everything when you can get everybody that's like-minded together just to have fun. Well, and and that's the problem, man. Everybody's gotten so serious about racing, dude. i mean, I,
01:00:52
Speaker
I had more fun betting for cheeseburgers and hot dogs, Coney dogs, but pacemakers. I love Coney dogs and pacemakers, man. Those things were killer. yeah i mean so You know what mean? Every fat kid's happiness.
01:01:04
Speaker
By the way, Sean Allen says you always got to have your Joe Dirty friend, too. absolutely Absolutely, man. Absolutely. That's my boy, Sean.
01:01:15
Speaker
um the Joe Dirty, as he calls it. um he's always He's always running around with us all summer long. um That's the only damn Mopar that I got i ain't stuck working on.
01:01:31
Speaker
He's got a 66 Dodge 4 net. And he cruises with us everywhere. It's set up like the old school...
01:01:42
Speaker
like, don't know what the hell you call it. Not really, not a gasser, but like the old school 60s, 70s, early 70s hot rods. You what mean? Like the A-gas. Like the old A-gas. oh yeah yeah.
01:01:56
Speaker
That's how it's set up. And, you know, he has a lot of fun with us. You know what mean? He cruises around with us. And, you know, he's over here all the time working on that damn oil leak in frigging Mopar.
01:02:09
Speaker
i I call him Gay Mopar. Zach actually said it's the B-stock setup. so We got Zach in here kar star correcting us on this. Well, A-stock, B-stock, whatever. a damn Mopar. a Mopar.
01:02:23
Speaker
Hell yeah. So right before we went to a cruise, we bought him the the Joe Dirk wig. No shit. yeah yeah Actually, we went to Delaware Cruise. It was Delaware Cruise 9. Sidebirds on. my God. Yes.
01:02:45
Speaker
Haley painted the sideburns. We got him Joe Dirt wig and the sunglasses and all. And he cruised the whole entire cruise that night in Delaware as Joe Dirt.
01:02:57
Speaker
That is the shit right there. Somebody knew that. That is fucking awesome. Yes. fail yeah mean And I tell you what, if if it wasn't a spitting image of fucking Joe Dirt and that Don's cruising up down to Dusky Street, dude, there ain't nobody else going to top that one. I swear to God.
01:03:14
Speaker
He was so close. yeah He looked like Joe Dirt was cruising. I swear to God. Hey, that put the fun into that night then, having somebody do that. You know what I mean? Dude, it was just, and that's the kind of fun we like to have, man.
01:03:30
Speaker
I mean, we like going fast, but yet at the same time, We like cruising and being around our friends too. You know what mean? course. yeah Hot rod people. And it's nice to have that. And it's and it's i'm and I love to see where where it's going now.
01:03:47
Speaker
Because like I said, majority of people I know out of people through Corey, everything else has been through the track. You know, people through the drag strip.
01:03:57
Speaker
And now seeing where it's coming more of, Like me and Zach and Katie were talking, we're bringing back the memories of the old cruising days, getting everybody together. it didn't matter what you had, muscle car, lifted truck, whatever.
01:04:11
Speaker
Just everybody got together to hang out and cruise. We cruised downtown up and around the square and shit and everything else. And then, of course, Saturday nights, we went to Park Avenue and raced when we were still allowed to street race up at Park Avenue, and Mansfield at the time.
01:04:27
Speaker
But like it was nice to have everybody together. We'd had 30 or 40 people together load down backs of pickup trucks cruising through downtown, load up the cars. That's what we did.
01:04:39
Speaker
Yeah, we that's what we used to do. You know what mean? When i was in high school, we'd go to downtown Delaware. We'd cruise Sadusty Street, and then we'd park, and we'd set up the races, and then we'd go out on Harrison harrison Road.
01:04:53
Speaker
I know where that's at, yeah. Off of 521, and we had a quarter mile marked off there. We'd bust off the quarter mile, disappear back in town. You know what I mean? Meet up, get paid, whatever.
01:05:04
Speaker
And then we would raise up for $10 and $20 back then. yeah yeah Or it was just where it was just bragging rights for some. i mean Most of them were. was just bragging rights. yeah But none of it was big money.
01:05:18
Speaker
None of it was big money. yeah yeah i mean you were If you actually cruised all night long and won a race and paid for your gas, you were golden, dude. you know Yep. You know what I mean? That was just a good time.
01:05:32
Speaker
What the fuck? gen no one so but the Corey, really, man? but but He says Jimbo puts the wing up his ass and squeezes and pulls the bone out and eats it.
01:05:48
Speaker
They got started on the sideways corn dogs and everything else. Since you mentioned corn dogs. ah The chatterbox is going crazy between Corey and Frick and Talon and them. I'll tell you what. I once i want to give a shout out to Corey. You know what mean? Because um No, seriously, because he talked to me. He's the one that talked me into going to this Dragon Drive. Sick, smoky shit.
01:06:15
Speaker
you know what mean? Because I'd never done one. And he talked about how much fun it was going to be. And, dude, I'm going tell you right now. I left here head to wherever the hell it was, Alabama, where the fuck was going.
01:06:30
Speaker
When I left here, you can ask her. I was a nervous wreck, dude. My car has never seen that kind of miles. ever and at one time and surely haven't done it pulling a damn trailer you know mean you know you know what i'm saying so it was a whole warning curve but believe it or not the old girl did really really well and we actually other than smoking the brakes walked the brakes twice and smoked in but other than that
01:07:01
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we had a ball, man. I mean, that was actually a really, really good time. That was my first but real vacation and about 15 years. And it's funny that that you can actually say have a vacation, especially doing what you love doing as a family.
01:07:19
Speaker
doing When you're doing that as well. Yep. I didn't get to do that one. i had to work. Yeah, she didn't get to go on that that one with us. It was just me and Mama.
01:07:30
Speaker
It was me and Mama on that one. but But I tell you what, it was an eye-opener of how much fun it could be. You know what was was with a page With a few changes on the car and making a few changes and doing a few things, it made us realize how much more fun these cars could truly be.

Car Mods and Engine Building

01:07:53
Speaker
Oh, yeah. it Well, and it brings back the olden days like you're talking about. Doing know you know the cruising and setting up races. And it brings back so much memory from doing that stuff.
01:08:04
Speaker
Yes, it does, man. It really does.
01:08:09
Speaker
But, yeah, we plan on being out lot this year, man. yeah So we're going to make a lot of changes on Nova here. um We're going to get the Camaro done. We're going to make a few changes on the daughter's truck because, obviously, i didn't get a few things right.
01:08:25
Speaker
Um, we're going to get a few things squared away with it. Um, I mean, hell dude, she's running around a 400 horse small block, 355 and a little shit has getting 21 model gallons. That's nice. That's nice. so Yeah. You can do that.
01:08:42
Speaker
With a carbureted, with a carbureted small block and a full size GMC pickup. Yeah. i mean, you can't wrong with that. yeah don going better Doing better on gas mileage than some of these newer damn trucks.
01:08:57
Speaker
and my body that I do my 2022. Yeah. please yeah It's crazy, dude. But like I said, we had so much fun doing it. I just want to get some stuff done on them. and I want to really just concentrate on cruising the hell out of them this year. That's why I want to put direct port injection on my Nova and change to an overdrive trans.
01:09:19
Speaker
Because I'm still running to old school 400 trans. with the trans brake it's a full-blown race trains you know it's got but no there's no brake in it so when you let off the gas it goes in neutral you know saying so yeah that was that was that was hard to drive at six smokies i can only imagine having a race chanting doing that stuff with man yeah so we're gonna make some changes this year and uh this winter and We're going them all out this year and we're going to cruise the shit out of them, man. you a little bit of racing Do a little bit racing, do little bit of cruising. I'm hoping to meet up with you guys when we all get together and like I said, get to cruise and hang out as we get all our families together and be able to go do this stuff this summer. and
01:10:05
Speaker
Yes, Corey, I'm going to try to make it to your shop before the freaking sun starts shining and it's warm out. But yeah, we definitely got to all get together and make it a Saturday or Sunday night, Saturday night kind of thing or a Friday night thing where we all. Don't make it on Sunday.
01:10:21
Speaker
Don't make it on a Sunday now. Don't make it Sundays now. God damn, I got to get up 3.30 in the morning on Monday. Yeah, never mind. We'll do a Friday or Saturday. We'll do that. We can do it on Saturday. We're doing a get together. um Do you guys got any sponsors or anybody else you want to shout out and stuff? Because I figure we'll go ahead and get that right here for you guys.
01:10:43
Speaker
buddy tracking that's about it um honestly i give props to cory man for going out and chasing these sponsors and getting these sponsors and stuff like that i get props to him man hands down um i'm not that type of person man um and cory will tell you i keep my circle small i don't associate with a whole lot of people um You know what And we do this as a family thing.
01:11:16
Speaker
um Corey has been here and helped us, you know, when I needed extra hand or something like that. Zach has offered. Zach has offered to come help.
01:11:27
Speaker
Corey's been here a couple of times helping me out, you know, get things. and And Corey called me and I call him. We toss shit back and forth all the time with each other for ideas and stuff. But I don't have no sponsors, man. This is a this is a us thing.
01:11:43
Speaker
You know what mean? And back when I had my 67 Pro Street Camaro, I did have year one reach out to me one time, and I was like, no, I'm not interested.
01:11:59
Speaker
You know what mean? because Just because at the end of the day, man, i don't i don't want nobody to say, hey, I helped him get where he's at. You know i'm saying?
01:12:13
Speaker
No, I totally get it, man. I understand that aspect of the whole thing. Because that's what happens. as You get that one one person that you know for a sponsorship and then all of a sudden because they came on this one time, even though it's been years that you've been doing this stuff.
01:12:32
Speaker
And they're like, oh, I helped him get where he's at. No, you just help push it over the edge a little bit. You just need a little extra. and No, they want the whole credit.
01:12:43
Speaker
Right. My thing is, like to give credit where credit is due. It's like Corey. You know, it's like Corey. You know what I mean? If somebody will ask me, hey, you know, how did you do this? How did you do that?
01:12:54
Speaker
Well, don't know. i called Corey about four fucking times and we talked back and forth for about an hour total. And this is what the fuck we came up with. You know what I'm saying? and It's nice to have that. chat you got somebody in You can do that with because that's once again, that tight knit circle.
01:13:12
Speaker
It's getting far through between where you can pick each other's brains if you're stuck on something you don't understand, but this person knows it and they can help you. and And that's one of those things that's getting scarce with the tight-knit group of people where you can do that with each other.
01:13:28
Speaker
I don't want to tell you this. We needed help yesterday with the bread. No. I forgot to tell Corey about that. yeah Hey, Corey, buddy, broke um my sixty four dollars tool broke as I was sliding hammer and beating the shit out of that bearing.
01:13:46
Speaker
And ah the bread works, brother. One and a half pieces of bread and a five-eighth bolt. Beat that bitch in the bearing. Come right out, buddy.
01:13:57
Speaker
So shout out to Corey ah the bread for the bread. The bread idea works. you um And Corey just shouted out, and I'll shout it out here.
01:14:09
Speaker
He says Jason is a dealer for Schaefer's Oil, if anybody's interested. Yeah, well, and that's, I'm sorry. Schaefer's is not a sponsor. Schaefer's is not they're not a sponsor for me.
01:14:22
Speaker
um they don't They don't give me nothing, and they're a sponsor for me. Anthony at Schaefer's is a hell of a good dude. ah He's my salesman. um He has hooked me up. um I am a dealer.
01:14:36
Speaker
For all the shapers, lubricants, whether it's oil, gear lube, training fluid. You probably can't see it but on the other side of the truck here. I got a huge shelf full of shapers.
01:14:48
Speaker
um Is it the cheapest oil? No. Is it the cheapest anything? No. um I sell it. I sell it at cost. So if somebody wants it, hit me up, man.
01:15:02
Speaker
You what mean? I'm not shipping the shit. I don't ship oil. I don't mess with that stuff. But now if somebody wants local hit me up, you know, shapers is right there with Brad Penn, man.
01:15:14
Speaker
Um, actually Mark cook at bad man racing. Um, that's a bad dude right there. He's on, what he's the one he is responsible for this big block that I have right now. Um,
01:15:27
Speaker
He, mark Mark Cook, is a hell of a good dude. And I will say he did not sponsor me in any way, but he gave me a hell of a deal and was very fair to me when we went to have this motor built.
01:15:40
Speaker
Once again, Sean Graham um sent me that direction because Sean uses Mark. Yep. And Mark called me and said, Hey man, I'm not building this motor.
01:15:52
Speaker
He said, you know, what, what, what I took him, he said, I'm not building this motor, man. He said, you will grenade this damn thing tomorrow. He said, I'm not building this motor.
01:16:02
Speaker
He said, we got to go a different route. I said, what we got to He said, I need a different engine block. I need different crank. He said, but we can use the heads. We can use pistons, rods, whatever.
01:16:13
Speaker
And he said, um, But we got to make some changes. I said, OK. And we made a shit ton changes, cost me a bunch of money. But I am extremely happy with the big block that we came up with.
01:16:26
Speaker
And even Mark himself said, man, with that combination, i was not expecting that kind of horsepower. We ran in the dyno before I brought home because Mark's got a dyno up here.
01:16:37
Speaker
And he said, I was not expecting those kind of numbers. He said, but damn, i said he said I'm writing this combo down because I can't believe it made this kind of power. but I was like, well, it was it was a thought in my head.
01:16:50
Speaker
i wanted to try it, and it worked for power. You know i mean? So and we had a lot of fun building it. Mark was good to us. You know, shout out to Mark Cook.
01:17:00
Speaker
He's a damn good engine builder, damn good machinist. he treat He treats you right. He was very, very fair on the pricing. so rick This is the one of those ones where it's with Mark. What I love about him is besides being a people being for the people, he's a he's a racer building for racers, too. I mean, that's one thing.
01:17:21
Speaker
one thing you can say about Mark, man. I mean, hell, damn near every dragster you see at Trails or 42, majority of them even door cars. There's a bad man racing engine underneath in the frame rails of these freaking vehicles. There's a reason Mark's such a trusted engine builder.
01:17:38
Speaker
And especially with Sean Graham. I mean, dude, that guy, that family there alone, Sean's family in the bracket side of things, they're consistent family and they run they run Mark's Motors, man, and Yes. they they're It's proven. So anybody out there listening, Mark Cook, Bad Man Racing Engines, local, whatever, get a hold of the man. He's on Facebook and everything else, too. Yes, he does. I'll shout i'll shout him out there.
01:18:05
Speaker
Yeah, Bad Man Racing. um He is, the i'm telling you, like I said, and he was more than fair, man. He was actually cheaper on the machine work side of things than what anybody else was around here.
01:18:20
Speaker
Um, and at first I was nervous, but I was talking to Sean, know what I mean? i was like, dude, fuck I'm going to do it. I'm going to do with the man, what, what he recommends.
01:18:32
Speaker
And that's the route we went. And I'm totally happy with that motor. I mean, I'm extremely happy with it Yes, Corey, or we could do that. Go spend $300 or $400 on an LS motor. and this I mean, it works. It does work. I mean, some people, that's where a lot of them are. I mean, I'm guilty of it. That's what our Colorado for the Rough Truck had, and it was a $500 pick-and-pull motor for the Rough Truck that we converted over. so Well, you know what? And and props, Corey, because yeah i mean, I've watched him do
01:19:05
Speaker
some crazy shit, just like when he was in Florida blowing up motors and calling me, you know, every couple hours. Yeah. I mean, I watched that boy do some crazy shit, but I will not give him props. You know what mean? He makes it happen. He he makes it happen. Yes, he does. Yeah. mean, but, but in my situation, after going through three motors and three years And spending that much money, i just wanted to be done with it.
01:19:34
Speaker
You know what mean? I wanted to with a nice motor and be done. Especially when you're playing with the big block side of things. I mean, it yeah that gets very costly. oh Very fast. I've heard this saying, especially with the big blocks, it's usually you might as well throw $1,000 in each cylinder, depending on what you want to do with them. That's not a lot, buddy.
01:19:56
Speaker
That's not a lot. That's not a lot. But I've heard that saying for years and it's like the more people I know that runs big blocks, it's you're right. It is not a lie. It is the name truth. No, i can you know what? But you know, at the end of the day, you get what you want.
01:20:14
Speaker
Yeah. i mean, just like, you know, Kelly's GTO, Kelly's GTO is LS, you know, Kelly's Camaro is LS. Yeah. I mean, and, Neither one of them or crazy builds, but, you know, like the GTS naturally aspirated.
01:20:32
Speaker
And it carried, you know what I mean, and made 560 to the ground. You know what I mean? That's a nice little motor. Yeah. oh You know what I'm saying? I mean, it's a 416. It's a 416 stroker motor.
01:20:47
Speaker
It detects a speed. ah Oh, nice. Yeah. Texas speed 416, um, PRC heads, all that good stuff. So, you know, the car makes good power. Just like this little motor, it's in her Camaro.
01:21:03
Speaker
You know, that, this, believe it or not, is a stock bottom end LS1, uh, with AFR heads, um,
01:21:15
Speaker
Pretty good size cam. ah Aces. Give a shout out to Aces. They hooked me up with ah the whole top end kit for the Aces fuel injection. By the title way, Corey Butcher at Raybroke Garage is a dealer for Aces. Yes, he is.
01:21:32
Speaker
Nice. Yes, he is. Oh, And actually, my next purchase will be through Corey because I'm getting the direct port injection through ACES, through Corey, ah for but for my big block.
01:21:47
Speaker
Hell yeah, man. I can't wait to see that on there. That'll be fucking sick. Normally, I've seen, since ACES has been around, I normally, you mostly see that on the, I've seen on the small block stuff, not on a big block. So that'll be cool to see that. Totally, yeah.
01:22:01
Speaker
but Well, the the big block is a different looking style intake. Actually, me and the guys over Aces and Corey will vouch for this.
01:22:12
Speaker
it's it's The intake kind of nicknamed the mailbox um because the intake look like looks like an old school mailbox. Oh, geez. i I can't wait to see it on the car. very yeah So that, you know,
01:22:28
Speaker
I really liked so far now I haven't got I'm getting ready to start the wiring on the on the Camaro. um I liked how everything the aces has given us so far has fit really really nice because I'm anal and you can ask Corey I am anal as hell about appearance and how things fit and how how it looks and and so far aces has really made a very good product on how it looks, how it's designed, um especially on the out on the LS part of it, because the high-rise intake we have on the Camaro, the 102 throttle body, you know, all that, everything looks very, very, very nice and clean.
01:23:15
Speaker
And that's just something I am very, very particular about. oh Yeah. As you guys can see in the thumbnail, look how clean the the engine shot. That's why I did for the thumbnail the mostly the motor picture that's in the Nova.
01:23:29
Speaker
As you can tell, how precise and particular Jason is is about his stuff. Should I call it nice in particular? Well, from 100 yards, maybe. I mean, the picture doesn't do it justice, I guess. if Are you telling on him, Kelly, or what? Well,
01:23:48
Speaker
but well Yeah, Corey calls it OCD. Kelly calls it anal retina. I call it being the right way. You know what I mean? i i And don't let Corey bullshit you.
01:24:02
Speaker
Don't let Corey bullshit you fool you guys because he came over here to help me on my daughter's pickup truck. And I'm going to tell you, Corey knows how to make things look nice and do it right.
01:24:15
Speaker
So... Nice and clean. what Yes. ah yeah As Corey said, OCD. Yeah, well, don't don't let Corey bullshit you because he was over here working at my shop, we're helping with ah my daughter's truck.
01:24:32
Speaker
He's been over here was one whole day and one whole night. We was over here quite a while. And we knocked a bunch of stuff out. But yes, Corey knows how to do it right. And he will do it right.
01:24:44
Speaker
So don't let him bullshit you about, you know, well, we just throw it together. know, bullshit. He knows he's doing. Yeah. Sorry, Corey, the cat's out of the bag, buddy. well zach and Zach and Katie and Jason and Kelly are all telling on you, man. So your secrets ain't secrets no more, bud. Sorry. yeah that You're screwed now, dude.
01:25:02
Speaker
there That just means if there's a pattern to the perfection, y'all find it. Yes. Oh, hell yeah. yeah Yeah. Yeah, because just Corey, well, that and Corey knows how I am.
01:25:14
Speaker
You know, i want everything ran neatly. i want everything done neatly. know what I mean? can be doing that. Well, to me, it's easier to find a problem when i screw it up later. yeah Yeah.
01:25:29
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, when I break something for being stupid, you know what I mean? Or like lift the head off my wife's GTO. You know what I mean? Or as Sean says, it's got to be hammer approved or allowed to leave the garage. Yeah.
01:25:46
Speaker
yeah but that is that but but The thing is, there's nothing wrong with that, man. like especially Especially when you're going cruising or even racing, it could be that one little gremlin that was overlooked because we didn't take that five extra seconds to make it where it needed to be. I mean, it's it's always something when we overlook the, and it's always usually the littlest dumb things. Oh, it'll be okay. And then that's what can cost you either at race or your car breaks down on the side of the road cruising.
01:26:22
Speaker
I mean, it's usually something like that. And it's like, then you see it and it's like, I'm a dumb ass. And i've I've had many a days where that's happened with me over something. It's like, I knew I should have done this and never did.
01:26:36
Speaker
Or as my wife would say, you leave the house and forget to turn the transmission pan on, make it halfway to Columbus. And before you realize you didn't turn it on and the transmission is 250 degrees, puking oil out of it.
01:26:49
Speaker
i almost got that. was my Yeah, that was my bad. Or as Corey says lies, he has 12,569 cushion clamps and he was trying to get me to use zip ties.
01:27:02
Speaker
