Hello everyone, today I talk about the legendary QB for the CFL and NFL Joe Kapp. Joe lost his battle with Alziemherz's disease on May, 8th, 2023 at the age of 85. He was a QB for the Cal Golden Bears, he also was drafted by the Washington Redskins now known as the Commanders in the 18th round of the 1959 NFL draft but ended but going up to Canada and playing for the Calgary Stampeders and the BC Lions of the Candian Football League. While in the CFL he earned an elite status for leading the BC Lions to a Grey Cup appearance in 1963 and a win in the Grey Cup in 1964. Before the 1967 season, he announced that he wanted to return to the United States and play for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League. Also, teams interested in him were the AFL's Oakland Raiders now the Las Vegas Raiders, San Diego Chargers now the LA Chargers, and the Huston Oilers now the Tennesse Titans. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in a multi-player trade. Which saw the Vikings get Kapp and the CFL get Vikings player Jim Young who wanted to return to his native Canada. Joe's first season with the Vikings ended with 8 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, but the team showed improvement even though they went 3-5-3. 1968 saw the Vikings improve and play in their first-ever playoff game against the legendary Baltimore Colts now known as the Indianapolis Colts, they would lose that game. But in 1969 the Vikings with the motto of "40 for 60" would make a run led by Kapp on offense and the Purple People Eaters' defense. Kapp at an awards banquet would later turn down the team MVP award saying there is no one most valuable Viking there are forty most valuable Vikings I can't accept this and walked away to a roaring crowd of cheers. The Vikings would make it all the way to Super Bowl 4 where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL 23-7. Kapp would later become a free agent by NFL rules and he was "traded" to the Boston Patriots now known as the New England Patriots. After his playing career was done he would be in movies and tv shows. He would later become a coach and a gm. We here at the Steven Gervais and Friends Podcast wish to show our condolences to the Kapp family and to thank Joe for making the Vikings winners even though we didn't win the Superbowl.
