00:00:44
Ken Davies
I'm doing really well, actually. and'm very much looking forward to this. It is, by the way, in America, the ah NFL. ah What is it when they get all their players, their new players in?
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Draft.
00:00:57
Ken Davies
The draft. I should know that.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Draft, yeah.
00:00:59
Ken Davies
It's the NFL draft at the moment, so I should really have my Cincinnati Bengals hat on, but I've got my Cincinnati Reds hat on. Because we're talking America, i'm looking forward

World Cup Focus & Qualifiers Update

00:01:07
Ken Davies
to this. going to be very exciting.
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We are a indeed, because today marks a new chapter in the podcast. So if you've been listening, we have, yeah, because the last few weeks we've been having a global tour of the various soccer federations.
00:01:11
Ken Davies
We've entered a new phase.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
We ended up last week on home territory with UEFA because we're based in the UK. And today we branch out and start and having a look at some of the key teams in the in the World Cup. Now, what do we know so far in terms of qualifying then? Well, Japan were first through, followed by New Zealand and Iran, and the holders Argentina are through as well.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they'll join, of course, the host nations, the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

USA Team History & Key Players

00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So here we are, quite naturally, we're going to start today with the USA.
00:01:52
Ken Davies
That's a beautiful hit.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was it's better it was better before you started singing, to be honest.
00:02:04
Ken Davies
that's a beautiful
00:02:07
Ken Davies
I beg your pardon.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:02:08
Ken Davies
I'm going to learn all these before we do. What I'm going to do, I'm going to sing the first line of every single national anthem. But I have to say, that is a great national anthem. I don't even know if is the national anthem, but it's great. It's a great tune.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know what we should do?
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know what we should do next year? When all the teams are qualified, we should have a national anthem World Cup.
00:02:22
Ken Davies
Wow.
00:02:27
Ken Davies
Wow.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
were where we just, they play off against each other. We'll pick names out of a hat, we play off against each other, and we'll end up with a World Cup winner of national anthems.
00:02:35
Ken Davies
makes note for new podcast.
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what we should do.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's what we should do.
00:02:39
Ken Davies
Forget We'll just do a national anthem work. That's a brilliant idea.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Right, so today we're looking at the history of the USA football soccer squad. We're looking at key players, formation, their approach. We'll focus on the manager, Mauricio Pochettino. And both Ken and I will have a punt at where we think the USA will finish as things stand. there's a long way to go, it should be said.
00:03:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then, of course, injecting into that somewhere at an appropriate moment will be this week's Kenny's Quiz, ah where he has to answer a particularly easy question on the USA.
00:03:01
Ken Davies
was good.
00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
a
00:03:13
Ken Davies
Well,
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's kick off then, Ken, with ah look at the history, a look at the history of the USA Soccer Federation and team.
00:03:20
Ken Davies
okie dokie. Well, the USA Soccer Federation, as we know, we were very comfortable calling it soccer. They have taken place or they have taken part, I should say, in 11 World Cups.
00:03:33
Ken Davies
Now, as I'm getting the question later, you're getting one. um What is their best finish ever in which World Cup, Nick?
00:03:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's a very good question.
00:03:47
Ken Davies
i Yeah, it is.
00:03:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Quarterfinals.
00:03:51
Ken Davies
What year?
00:03:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the year... They

USA Team Performance & Challenges

00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah did get to the quarterfinals once. I don't know what year it was. they get they've They've been in the quarterfinals the World Cup, I'm sure.
00:04:02
Ken Davies
see
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I may be wrong.
00:04:05
Ken Davies
okay Okay.
00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Go on, then.
00:04:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Put me out misery. ah Really? When did they get to the semifinals?
00:04:07
Ken Davies
The answer is semifinals.
00:04:11
Ken Davies
1930. I was the Great game.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay. Well, I obviously wasn't around to watch that.
00:04:14
Ken Davies
nineteen
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
You were probably there. Were you there?
00:04:16
Ken Davies
um yeah i was at the game
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:04:18
Ken Davies
great
00:04:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you get your, yeah, you managed to get your pensioner's seat for that game.
00:04:21
Ken Davies
Yeah, they were so good about it. Yeah, 1930, the first World Cup. They got to the semi-finals, got third place, but they didn't play off for a third place game like we do now, pointlessly.
00:04:34
Ken Davies
They were awarded it retrospectively based on the best results before that point. So they they ended up, because they had to get everybody in third fourth place later on, USA were in third place. 1950...
00:04:45
Ken Davies
nineteen
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I bet after a recent disaster in the Nations League, they wish they still didn't bother playing for a third place because they've had an absolute shocker recently.
00:04:46
Ken Davies
the
00:04:52
Ken Davies
I know we're going to come to that. That that is interesting. 1950, Nick. In the 1950 World Cup, they beat England Now, we neither of us, I hasten to while we're around for that ah that particular game, but it caused...
00:05:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why, were you out shopping or something?
00:05:10
Ken Davies
I was busy, yeah, that day. ah It caused absolute consternation in the UK because here was... England, well, it caused a lot of laughter in Scotland and Wales, I probably should say. But in England, who had given birth, as we thought, to football, soccer, being beaten by the upstarts in the World Cup 1-0, it caused absolute mayhem.
00:05:35
Ken Davies
So 1950 beat England. They didn't qualify again after 1950 until 1990. So they had 40 years of absolutely no participation in the World Cup. They were the host in 1994.
00:05:48
Ken Davies
Obviously, they got an automatic berth because of that. They lost to Brazil in the round 16 or the round of 16 in 1994. They then qualified for the next five World Cups, which is a very credible performance. Only seven other nations have kind of done that.
00:06:05
Ken Davies
And that reached a kind of pinnacle in 2002 where they reached the quarterfinals. They're ranked first in CONCACAF as of the 3rd of April 2025, ranked 16th in the world, but their recent form hasn't been great, as you alluded to.
00:06:24
Ken Davies
ah Last four games, they beat Venezuela at home in a friendly. They beat Costa Rica at home in a friendly. Then they lost in the semi-final of the CONCACAF Nations League to Panama, somewhat unexpectedly.
00:06:39
Ken Davies
And then in the third place so to place a playoff against Canada, obviously both of those teams rivals, likely rivals in the World Cup. They lost two one on the 23rd of march so That semi-final defeat to Canada ended a reign of three consecutive CONCACAF Nations League titles for the USA.
00:07:02
Ken Davies
So it's a pretty solid World Cup performance over the years. they They've never threatened to win it, really. Maybe 1930, but who knows. ah But they definitely offer they're off form.
00:07:16
Ken Davies
They're off kilter a little bit, particularly when it comes to these cup competitions.

Team Dynamics & Key Player Highlights

00:07:20
Ken Davies
So that's history.
00:07:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's there's a lot of reasons. Yeah, there's a lot of reasons for that's a great history. Good point of history, there Ken. Thank you very much indeed. Yeah, ah think there's a lot of reasons why.
00:07:26
Ken Davies
Yeah. Yeah.
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Things aren't quite on an even kilter at the moment. Obviously, they've got a new manager. They were beset by injuries during the recent Nations League tournament. But losing to Panama. I mean, the game against Panama was an absolute...
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was ridiculous because it was 99% USA, 1% Panama, and they scored the 94th minute to 1-0. I mean, it was was a crack.
00:07:47
Ken Davies
yeah
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
was just a one of those games, you know. One of those games. They should have beaten Canada by rights, but I sense, I sense by then, Canada were far more up for it than the USA.
00:07:59
Ken Davies
i Bye.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I have no idea. I have no idea why. So that's a good little potted history. It brings us up to so speed where we are with the USA. They are in a bit of a period of transition, a bit of period in flux. And I think it's one of those where sometimes we say when players, also indeed when teams are playing really well during qualification periods and a year before the World Cup, you kind of use the old cliche, have their peak too early.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think for the USA, they'll be very glad they've still got another year to go because they're we've got a new manager in. They've got players who are injured or coming back from injury. They can't really put out a settled team at the moment.
00:08:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're having to rely on players who they probably wouldn't ordinarily want to do so. And they've got a big opportunity in the summer with the Gold Cup to start, I would say, laying the real foundations for their World Cup preparations next year.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But as we're going to talk about a little bit, later on, the manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is already feeling a little bit of heat. Already, and he only took over a few months to ago. So we're going to just focus for a few moments on the players.
00:09:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I've highlighted a few of the players so to look out for or or to listen out for. during the World Cup. um Key, and these are absolutely key players for the USA.
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
The number one key player for the USA is without a shadow of a doubt, ah Christian Pulisic, who's having a fantastic season at AC Milan.
00:09:18
Ken Davies
correct Great player.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's very much the... the the attacking threat, if you like, if not the absolute, I mean, he is the goal scorer. He is the kind of primary goal threat in many ways, but he's very much the tackle, the attacking focal point of the USA.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he is certainly going to be one to watch next season and and indeed going into the competition.
00:09:41
Ken Davies
It's a great player in the Premier League, I thought.
00:09:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
is a great player. Yeah, did. Yeah, he did. it Absolutely. Yeah.
00:09:44
Ken Davies
Chelsea wasn't he, I think.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Yeah, Chelsea, yeah. But he seems to be having a real golden patch in his career at the moment. And they'll be able to really hope that this carries on into next year.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anthony Robinson, no doubt as the Jedi. be fair, he was called Jedi. he He called himself Jedi. ah But that's how all the Americans know him. and no and They just know him as Jedi Robinson.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Very well known here in the UK, plays for Fulham. He's had a really good season at left back.
00:10:12
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
played 33 games in the Premier League this year, ah got eight assists, and he is nailed on for that full-back slot. Absolutely nailed on and in America's agreement.
00:10:21
Ken Davies
He didn't play in either didn't play in either of the... yeah
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's been injured a bit.
00:10:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been injured a bit. Yeah, he's been...
00:10:25
Ken Davies
Oh, Pekas, we missed him.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. Well, him and the other full-back, Serginio Dest, who plays for PSV, he wasn't playing either.
00:10:27
Ken Davies
Clearly missed him.
00:10:31
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And particularly in that Panama game, and and Panama, as you would expect,
00:10:33
Ken Davies
No, he wasn't.
00:10:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
played a very low block. Now, low block is a phrase but for for all these, everybody listening, low blow block, mid block and high block are phrases that have crept into the football parlance only in the last year or so.
00:10:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's what we used to call parking the bus. It's just a really defensive method of play. And they played very, very narrow. And I think they really missed both Robinson and Dest's attacking Zest down the wing.

Strategies & Youth Development

00:11:03
Ken Davies
So Panama, octopus I would imagine Panama might build a canal.
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
but would have been That would have been a difference. Yeah.
00:11:10
Ken Davies
I'm just, as a...
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you had to squeeze that in somewhere, but it didn't really work.
00:11:12
Ken Davies
LAUGHTER LAUGHTER
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It didn't really work. You try and do better. Weston McKennie is a Juventus midfielder. He's a key part of the American midfield, provides a lot of their drive.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah don't think this is going to matter, but interestingly, um in the last few days, he's been named among 13 soccer players who are being investigated for a illegal online betting in Italy. Now,
00:11:35
Ken Davies
ah wolf
00:11:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Those of you who are aware of the huge betting scandal of a few years ago, which saw Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and indeed Nicola Fagioli. I've got pronounce his right.
00:11:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I always get this wrong. Fagioli, that's the way.
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah They were both suspended. Yeah, Fagioli got seven months. Tonali got 10 months. As a result of that investigation, a load of players have also been named. Now, This isn't nearly as serious. So for those people who are thinking, oh my goodness, is McKinney going to be banned for the World Cup next year? Or is he going to miss most of next season? The answer is no.
00:11:50
Ken Davies
but joy
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's much more low level. It wasn't around football. ah Therefore, they're looking at a couple of hundred euros fine, really, much as much as anything else. But it's an interesting...
00:12:15
Ken Davies
He's not scoring any own goals though.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting. Yeah, well, this is it. ah Tim Weyer is number four on my list. Juventus player. Was a right back, now being used as a winger, and he will be used but as a winger by Prochettino in the USNMT.
00:12:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Son of George Ware, if you remember him.
00:12:33
Ken Davies
Yeah. What what a player.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, what a player water player he was, by the way. What a player he was. But he's, an again, an important part of that attacking threat. ah Tyler Adams, if he can keep himself fit, and this is a critical part, he he makes up a ah central part of that midfield for ah both America and, indeed, he's had a good season for Bournemouth.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pochettino's a big fan of his. He wanted him at Chelsea when he was the manager at Chelsea, but big question marks over his injury record. He needs to have a season next year where where he's playing. um A couple of others worth a mention. Younes Musar's an interesting player.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's somebody who really, really came onto the scene a couple of years ago, had a brilliant season at Valencia, god ah got a really good move to AC Milan, but has since really stalled.
00:13:15
Ken Davies
No.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
His career's gone nowhere. He's only 22 years old, so he's got plenty of time. But he needs a good season. Another one, and this is kind of the problem with the USC team. They're full of players who kind of expected to do better.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some named them a couple of years ago as the golden generation. It it just sort hasn't happened.
00:13:35
Ken Davies
no
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're full of these sorts of players who are just, their careers aren't just quite going anywhere. And if his trajectory continues, Pochettino's got a big decision to make on this lad, which would have maybe a year ago been unheard of.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was expected to really, really flourish, but he's struggling.
00:13:48
Ken Davies
Uh,
00:13:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But we'll keep very we'll keep a close eye on himself. And then it's worth a mention for the old man of the team, ah Tim Ream, former Fulham defender, now playing at Charlotte FC.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's still getting selected. And this may be kind of shines a light on on perhaps where the USA are weak. And fair enough, we've talked about their injuries and we've talked about injuries to their defenders. ah But he started the Nations League semi-final against Panama. He's captain of the team.
00:14:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He'll be 38 when the World Cup

Goalkeeping & Striker Challenges

00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
begins, but he's still doing it.
00:14:18
Ken Davies
Wow.
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's still doing it.
00:14:19
Ken Davies
Wow.
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought, I mean...
00:14:20
Ken Davies
Sensors can do that, though, can't they, I think? ah yeah Obviously, he's not going to be the most mobile, but he's he's pretty dominant.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. I mean, yes. Remember Paolo Maldini and players like that who played on you know well well into their late 30s, early 40s.
00:14:30
Ken Davies
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ream was great. what yeah Even in the last couple of years before he left Fulham, I remember watching him ah last season. He was great. He was great still, even at that age.
00:14:41
Ken Davies
Hmm. Hmm.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ultra reliable. So looking at the US team as a whole very quickly, midfield does seem to be their strongest point. That's going to be the driving force of their team. ah You've got so Adams, McKinney and Moussa, as we've talked about. You've also got Johnny Cardoso, Tanner Tessman waiting in the wings.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
A couple of those. Let's have a look at very quickly at the the back of the team and a front of the team. I think goalkeepers are a real weak spot for them. So their number one goalkeeper is Matt Turner.
00:15:05
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:15:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
of Crystal Palace and even to Palace fans that will come as a bit of a surprise because he just never plays.
00:15:12
Ken Davies
yeah like
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's He's on loan from Nottingham Forest and the reason Forest loaned him out is because he never played there. He's not played a Premier League game in two years. This is a problem. He's only played four domestic games this season in the EFL Cup in the UK and the FA Cup.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So and that's a problem because if he doesn't play next season, then again, Pochettino's got a look at this and go, am I prepared to put a goalkeeper into the World Cup who for three years has barely featured?
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a big risk. It's a big risk. But there isn't anybody really banging down the door. You've got Zac Steffen, you've got Patrick Schulte, who are you know but perfectly reasonable goalkeepers. But the fact that Matt Turner is
00:15:53
Ken Davies
Are they MLS players or are they playing outside the MLS?
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think the play that's a good question, actually. I'm not sure where they're playing. I'm sure where they're playing. But Matt Turner is still playing in goal. He played in the Nations League. So he is still their number one.
00:16:06
Ken Davies
He's the dominant number one, no question. Yeah, but you're right to point that out because he's he's he's not exactly yeah he's not getting the regularity of games that you'd want.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:16:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
No. and And up top in that number nine is an interesting one as well because you've got two players who are really ah battling it out for for that one number nine spot. And that's Ricardo Pepe and Follerin Balugan.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, Balogun is expected to be the first choice. But again, he's injured. in fact, they're both injured. They both missed the recent relations.
00:16:35
Ken Davies
So neither played in the CONCACAF.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so that's a problem. Now, Balogun came up through the Arsenal Academy and he joined them when he was eight years old. ah He had a loan at Middlesbrough and 2023 moved to Monaco.
00:16:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at the same time in that year, he changed allegiances. So he'd come up through the England youth system and he played at every youth level for England, including the under-21s. And then decided when it got to that senior level to switch allegiances. He was born in America, obviously.
00:17:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And decided to go play for America. And it their gain, actually. It was because he's a really good player.
00:17:07

This season, he struggled with a shoulder injury. It's kept him out. ah got injured middle of last year, well, middle of the fall. Then it had a kind of reoccurrence. So he's not played that much. He's only just come back into into playing. And again, he's another one whereby you go, look, he's got to have an injury-free season next year.
00:17:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And sitting just behind him, probably, I think he'll be first pick. yeah know but He'll be locked in if if he's fit. ah in that In that nine position. But sitting just behind him, making a case, is Riccardo Pepe. 22 years old, PSV player.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really blew up into the scene in America ah for fcs FC Dallas.
00:17:45
Ken Davies
Hmm?
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's where he kind of made his mark. He had a $20 million dollars transfer to the Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg. That didn't quite work out. He had a period out on loan. Then he's moved to PSV for half that kind of amount, transfer fee. There's a bit of a trajectory there going on.
00:18:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's not really happened for him at PSV so far either. So here's another one. He's got to a big season. Sitting in the wings, we've got Patrick Agumang, who plays for Charlotte FC. He made his debut for the national team against Venezuela in the Camp Cupcake Games.
00:18:18
Ken Davies
Yes.
00:18:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's two friendlies, as they're known, in January.

Pochettino's Coaching & Criticism

00:18:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Josh Sargent's had a very good season at Norwich in the championship, but hasn't really been able to translate that into an international level as such.
00:18:24
Ken Davies
yeah
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So where are goals going to come from? Where are they going to keep them out? that's going to be That's going to be the big question for the USA next year. But there's a long way to go. There's a long way to go.
00:18:38
Ken Davies
Well, that is ah fantastic deep dive. feel like ah I know all the players. feel I've got my arms around exactly yeah who are going to be the main threats and maybe the main weaknesses in that team.
00:18:51

for your 40% discount. Now, I was looking at the games. what What I was trying to work out was Pochettino's tactics.
00:19:33
Ken Davies
in terms of what's his formation. It's always one of the things we're going to focus on in all these ah episodes about teams is who the key players are, what the kind of formation formation they use, and the managers. This is about the formation.
00:19:49
Ken Davies
So i was looking at the the two most recent games.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:19:52
Ken Davies
It's a 4-2-3-1 set up. set up So, for example, in the in the semi-final, Turner in goal, is as Nick said, Moussa, Richards, Ream and Scali as the four at the back.
00:20:04
Ken Davies
Adams and Tessman as the holding midfielders. McKennie, Pulisic and Vweja as the three attacking midfielders, if you like, and then Sargent from Norwich up front.
00:20:17
Ken Davies
That didn't work particularly well. And for the third-place playoff against Canada... Again, the 4-2-3-1, which seems to be Pochettino's favoured formation.
00:20:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It always was. Yeah, it always was.
00:20:28
Ken Davies
Yeah, I think we can bank on that. Again, Turner and goal. Arston, McKenzie, Carter Vickers and Scali across the back. Adams and McKinney as the holding midfielders.
00:20:42
Ken Davies
Luna Pulisic and Weah as the attacking midfielders. And Aguimang making his debut up front. So that's the kind of way they set up. There's no doubt. Absolutely no doubt.
00:20:53
Ken Davies
The key to this is Pulisic. He's the talisman. Essentially, he wears number 10. He plays as number 10. But occasionally, starts out out wide left, as he did as you did in some of the friendlies. But essentially, he's what everything goes through.
00:21:14
Ken Davies
And if Pulisic has a decent tournament, the team probably will. He's got 32 goals in 78 games. No one can touch him in terms of production, in terms of goals.
00:21:25
Ken Davies
So everything in this team from a formation perspective is really geared to... sitting Sitting back, having having a couple of players defending the back four and then feeding Pulisic and seeing what can happen from there. So I think that's the way Pochettino is setting this up from a formation perspective.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, it'll be very interesting to see how that continues if he can't get the players he wants. Because the line-up that you you ran through there for the Nations League semis and the third-place players is not the line-up that will start the World Cup.
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's going to be half of that team's going to be different when when the players come back from injury.
00:22:01
Ken Davies
Yeah, it's injury-dumbed.com.
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah will that Will that lead to a change formation? Some have mooted. you know Will he go three at the back? But it doesn't look likely. ah He's favoured that formation wherever he's been.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like it. I'm a big fan of the 4-2-3-1. I really do. Particularly if you've got that attacking flair. And that five-man midfield, I think america the USA have got they've got the players to do that because that is their strongest position.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's where they've got their best position.
00:22:28
Ken Davies
can be seen as defensive. It can be seen, you know, in the sense if you've got two hold holding midfielders. I mean, that's probably sensible strategy.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
but depends how you want to... it depends Yeah, it kind of depends how you set it. It depends kind of how you play this because different coaches play 4-2-3-1 in different ways. A lot of coaches will go, right, okay, you know what? I've got enough attacking flair in my team and enough quality in that defensive six, if you like, with four defenders and two defensive midfielders to say to the front four, just go and play.
00:22:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't want you to have any responsibility coming back whatsoever. Just go and play. Right. Whereas actually, some coaches like a 4-2-3 and they like to drop in their two wingers, for want of a better phrase, the two wide men, to kind of make a four in midfield, which then allows the two fullbacks to go on the run and overlap.
00:23:15
Ken Davies
Yeah, she's got a 4411 really.
00:23:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And certainly, yeah yeah um yeah, almost, yeah.
00:23:18
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:23:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and certainly certainly with Dest and Robbins in the team, they will want to attack.
00:23:25
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So maybe that we see we maybe we see one of those front three, probably won't be Pulisic, but maybe we see one of those front three in a 4-2-3-1 just drop into midfield ah to allow the full-backs to ah bomb on, as we say, an attack down the flanks.
00:23:33
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting stuff.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Interesting stuff. Very good. Thank you very much indeed. Speaking of, Mauricio Pochettino then. We're going to spend just a couple of moments talking about him and thinking about where but he's going with all of this. um He's new to the USA and men's national team. Obviously, he took over in September last year. He's an Argentinian.
00:23:41
Ken Davies
yep
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
um He's a former manager of Southampton, Chelsea and Tottenham in the English Premier League, PSG in Ligue 1 in France. So he's got pedigree and he is very, very highly rated.
00:24:16
Ken Davies
very well regarded he was talked about as being a potential United manager wasn't he for a long time on United
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah and ah yeah, absolutely. And his name is always in the conversation for England as well.
00:24:25
Ken Davies
yep
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
His Achilles heel, though, his Achilles heel is that he's never won anything of real note. And that's something that kind of follows him around a little bit. it's it's it's a difficult one for him to kind of manage because he's got to finals of competitions, but he hasn't won a major competition. He's won a domestic competition in France, but kind of you'd expect that with PSG because they are the biggest team in France.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
not you know It's not huge, but he got to the Champions League final with Tottenham Didn't win. He's got to a couple of domestic finals in the UK, in England, the Premier League. Didn't win. And he's kind of got that kind of tag.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice guy, but bridesmaid.
00:25:01
Ken Davies
Yeah, a nearly man. A nearly man.
00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Never the bride. Yeah, the nearly man.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
On paper for the USA, he's a brilliant fit. He really, really is a brilliant fit. So when Greg Behalter was sacked last year after those embarrassing defeats to Uruguay and Panama in the group stages of the Copa America,
00:25:19
Ken Davies
Hmm.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
The hierarchy at USMNT wanted something different. And we've seen this. We've seen this in England, actually. we've We've kind of echoed this in the last few months. We've had Gareth Southgate, who's an English coach. He's come through the English set-up, et cetera, cetera.
00:25:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Got England to the latter stages of tournaments, the World Cup and the European Championships. Didn't win anything. Bridesmaid, not the bride. And when he stepped down, Everybody said, we need somebody. we need ah we need a different We need a foreign coach. We need a different voice. We need somebody who's won stuff. Now, Thomas Ducal's got the job and ah expect him to do a very good job.
00:25:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was a kind of similar thought process in America. with we We want a foreign coach. We want to go down a different road. We've we've had MLS coaches take over the national team. It hasn't worked. so Let's go. Let's go different.
00:26:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
The remit, as I said, the remit was was clear and it suits Pochettino. The incoming coach, Had to work with the existing squad, but develop young players.
00:26:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tick. Pochettino is famous for that.
00:26:19
Ken Davies
Yeah, he's good.
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's what you know he's He's done that everywhere he's gone. A big thing for him is developing youth. So big tick there. Get to the quarterfinal of the World Cup. We'll wait and see on that one.
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was ah That was a a requisite.
00:26:31
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
The USA will not be able to live with an early exit, by the way, on home soil.
00:26:38
Ken Davies
Can you imagine?
00:26:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
They will not able to it.
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also, it was important that they understood that the women's program was just as important as the men's program in the US. Now, think about this. Pochettino works with the current US women's manager, Emma Hayes, when they were both at Chelsea.
00:26:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he knows her. He's worked with her. She's the US s national women's team. He's the US men's national team. So it was a good fit there. And also, he worked with the US Soccer Federation Sporting Director, Matt Croker, when they were both at Southampton.
00:27:08
Ken Davies
Not really.
00:27:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And any manager at any level has to work very closely with a sporting director. So all paths in many ways led to Pochettino, but it's not been an amazing start. You mentioned earlier on, you know first couple of games, they expected to beat Panama, they did beat Panama.
00:27:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
They lost to Mexico in a friendly, that wasn't great. Quarter-final of the Nations League win against Jamaica, ended the year well, but... Camp Cupcake in January, which is, it by the way if you don't know what Camp Cupcake is, it's what the American media have kind of named these couple of friendlies early on in a year, where generally and historically, the the the US s don't really take it very seriously. And they use it as an experiment to try out new players, bring in new formations, just use it as a bit of an experimental team. And they play teams regularly.
00:27:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
from the kind of C standard, hence the camp cupcake. So they play it from got lower, lesser teams with the expectation of winning, but an opportunity to try out new players. That's why it's called that.
00:28:05
Ken Davies
That's interesting.
00:28:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there's wins against Venezuela and Costa Rica, as you've said, but the damage was really done against Panama and and then Canada. And it's led to storm of criticism. There were, as I said before, mitigating circumstances. They've had a horrendous injury list.
00:28:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I have no doubt whatsoever that a full-strength USA team would have beaten Panama and would have beaten Canada. But, hey, we've all got to live with injuries in football, part and parcel of the game. But he's been criticised for it. In fact, the last three hours, indeed, the last, this is hot news, the last three hours, was the former American coach, Bruce Serena, has accused Pochettino of not really understanding the culture of US football and the men's team, of lacking pride.
00:28:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he is very much banging the drum of America should have appointed a USA coach.
00:28:51
Ken Davies
Yeah, that's a bit of a it's a bit of a boomer attitude, isn't it? in fact
00:28:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is. It's well out. It's totally out of touch. It's totally out of touch.
00:28:58
Ken Davies
Yeah, it's just not.
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because if you if you go to a point, the reality is, the reality, exactly.
00:28:59
Ken Davies
You you get the best person available. Yeah. Yeah. first available
00:29:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
If the reality, and this is the same as what we said about Southgate and Tuchel here in the UK.
00:29:08
Ken Davies
yep
00:29:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
In England, I should say. In England, that was that was not a Scotland or Wales or or Ireland conversation.
00:29:10
Ken Davies
you
00:29:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. They've tried it. They've tried the MLS route plenty of times. It's brought them no success. So this is, I think bringing Pochettino's in is great move. It really is. um But it's going to have to be a big summer for him, I think.
00:29:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got the Gold Cup coming up in the summer.
00:29:26
Ken Davies
Uh.
00:29:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
A strong performance in that and all will be forgiven. They're going to be lacking some players again. So mckinney's McKinney, rather, is not going to be there. Tim Wey is going be there.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gio Reyna's not going to be there because they've got Club World Cup commitments at the same time. But they've got more than enough to do well. And I hope they do do well. Do you know what? I think Pochettino's a great guy. I think it's a great choice. And I really, really hope he does well.
00:29:51
Ken Davies
I just hope they stick with it's yeah The pressure can be very intense indeed, particularly when you're the host nations, but yeah they won't find much better than Pochettino, I think.
00:30:02
Ken Davies

Kenny's Quiz & Humorous Segment

00:30:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's that time of the week and time of the show where we do Kenny's quiz. Now, so far, we introduced this last week. and So far, Ken's record is zero out of one ah because he failed name every country that borders...
00:31:00
Ken Davies
right
00:31:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
wherever it was. i can't even remember where it was, Switzerland something like that.
00:31:06
Ken Davies
Germany.
00:31:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
know.
00:31:08
Ken Davies
I did say the right number.
00:31:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah cut oh yeah, yeah, that's right, yeah.
00:31:10
Ken Davies
I got nine first up.
00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You said the right number, but yeah, but you you couldn't name the country.
00:31:13
Ken Davies
I reckon to get half a point for that.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, um half a point. Hang on, let me just talk to the producers here. No, no points, producers say.
00:31:22
Ken Davies
Thanks, mate.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there you go. Right, so this week's quiz is an opportunity for you to get on the scoreboard, Kenny.
00:31:28
Ken Davies
Here we go.
00:31:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is the largest river in the USA? And do play a log at home. Do shout at your mobile phone if you're listening to this or a laptop, wherever you're listening to this.
00:31:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do shout the answer. No Googling, please. That doesn't count.
00:31:43
Ken Davies
I think everybody thinks this is the Mississippi ah and it's joined to another one Missouri ah combined river and if I can't think of the other one I'm going to have to go with that but I think there's another one ah but I'll go for the Mississippi... i I'm making a mistake. I know I'm making a mistake. From your expression, I know I'm making a mistake.
00:32:11
Ken Davies
The other one would...
00:32:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are making a mistake. You are making a mistake. But it's a very good guess because the Mississippi is the second longest river in the USA.
00:32:16
Ken Davies
Yeah, I know. It's a classic error. It's a classic error on Rivers of America.
00:32:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is.
00:32:20
Ken Davies
I therefore will have to go...
00:32:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah you can't No, no, you've given your answer. so You can't just, you can't give another answer so after I've told you you're wrong. You give me your answer. so
00:32:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the answer was Mississippi. The longest river, yeah, the longest river in the USA is and you're going to kick yourself here, is the Missouri River.
00:32:28
Ken Davies
All right.
00:32:29
Ken Davies
Mississippi, Missouri.
00:32:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you've got your head on the desk, and you're looking down.
00:32:41
Ken Davies
Referee?
00:32:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
All I all i can see is your cat.
00:32:42
Ken Davies
Referee?
00:32:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's the Missouri River at 9,000, sorry, 3,943 kilometers.
00:32:45
Ken Davies
That is...
00:32:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, no, no.
00:32:49
Ken Davies
I thought they were together. I thought they were they were a unit.
00:32:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
no don't know no
00:32:56
Ken Davies
I tell you what, I might be getting these wrong, but I'm getting close. Nine, correct answer last time. Mentioned the Missouri in its combined rivership with... Anyway, forget it.
00:33:08
Ken Davies
All right, I'll do better next week.
00:33:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but it's a bit like saying, well, I nearly scored 100 goals, but I kept on kicking the ball just wide.
00:33:13
Ken Davies
ah Okay.
00:33:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah You're either in or you're either in ah you're out.
00:33:15
Ken Davies
Right.
00:33:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're right you're wrong. ah Not out two, but a good effort, mate.
00:33:18
Ken Davies
Right.
00:33:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That was a good effort. um um
00:33:21
Ken Davies
I'm getting closer. I'm getting closer.
00:33:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm pretty impressed with that. I'm pretty impressed with it.
00:33:25
Ken Davies
Thanks.
00:33:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kenny's quiz continues next week, and well let's hope we can do better. Right.
00:33:29
Ken Davies
Well, there you go. so what what about predictions?
00:33:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
ro
00:33:31
Ken Davies
why do you think the finishing?
00:33:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, okay. I think if the World Cup started tomorrow, they'd struggle to get out of the group stage.
00:33:36
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:33:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the good news for them it's not starting tomorrow. They've got another year. Real possibility here for the US. They'll certainly get to the round of 32.
00:33:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Beyond that,
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
it just depends on who they draw.
00:33:53
Ken Davies
What about home advantage? Is that a thing?

USA's World Cup Prospects & Predictions

00:33:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Home advantage home ofvanage is a thing.
00:33:58
Ken Davies
are they going to turn on Pochettino because he's not um he's not American?
00:33:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm not sure. I'm not sure. Do you know? I'm not sure whether it is in the USO.
00:34:04
Ken Davies
Donald Trump could be running it by then. He could be the manager.
00:34:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And the centre forward.
00:34:08
Ken Davies
Elon Musk could be the manager.
00:34:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and the And the goalie as well. the Yeah, I don't know. Does home advantage count? I think home advantage counts. And look, I apologise for what we have to say, but here we go.
00:34:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Home advantage counts in football, in in nations that have a massively steeped football history. So we all remember, for example, Argentina 78.
00:34:29
Ken Davies
ah
00:34:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we all remember... World Cups where the host team has won and they've been dragged over the line through the host nation because they are the host nation. And the fanaticism of England 1966.
00:34:37
Ken Davies
England, 1966. I do. It's
00:34:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't remember that, but you do.
00:34:42
Ken Davies
hi da
00:34:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The USA is a different kettle of fish. I don't think they they're quite there yet in terms of this fanaticism. So if they get a favorable draw, it is growing and I'm really pleased it's growing.
00:34:51
Ken Davies
growing, though, as we see. It's growing. A lot of interest in what we do in the States.
00:34:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah And yeah, might live but hopefully it'll it'll all really...
00:34:55
Ken Davies
sir
00:35:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
come in and click in a place for next summer. But the I mean, the crowds for the Nations League game were pitiful.
00:35:05
Ken Davies
Yeah.
00:35:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, it's just not, it's not really caught on as much as perhaps some of the other nations were.
00:35:09
Ken Davies
Do, as a matter of interest, in America, do the USA women's game get better support than USA men's game? It's got to be real close.

00:35:23
Ken Davies

00:35:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and and the US women's national team have been world champions of the best team in the world for as long as I can remember.
00:35:28
Ken Davies
Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
00:35:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and they continue to dominate world football. So there's your answer.
00:35:33
Ken Davies

00:35:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's your answer.
00:35:35
Ken Davies
There's that's the answer. So what are you going for then?
00:35:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, favourable draw in the 32 gets them to the quarterfinals. I don't think they're going to get beyond the quarterfinals, but I like the USA. I like Pochettino. I think they've got some good players.
00:35:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
As a host nation, as I always think were host nations, I always want them to do well. I always think it benefits the the competition as a whole. So I'm going quarterfinals for the USA.
00:35:56
Ken Davies
Round of eight. Okay. So, yeah, not far off, I think. ah it's sixteen It's round of 16 or round of eight for me. ah The 16th in the world.
00:36:08
Ken Davies
But I've got a feeling they're not on an upward trajectory. I think they're on a downward trajectory. I like Pochettino, as we talked about. They've got nine MLS players in the squad. I worry a little bit about that.
00:36:19
Ken Davies
that's so I worry generally about their squad depth, actually. And we've alluded to it a little bit in terms of the injury agree with that.
00:36:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
it Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, no, I think that's that's fair. But we are not judging the USA today. We're judging them in a year's time.
00:36:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think they'll look a different beast. They've also got that opportunity to bring some more players in. yeah Yeah. Listen, we just don't know.
00:36:46
Ken Davies
um Look, it you work god in terms of my, I think they're around a 16 team wherever they're playing.
00:36:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a bit of a wild card, this. are you thinking?
00:36:53
Ken Davies
They've got the home advantage of being in the USA. I think it does matter in the USA. I think they'll be whipped into some kind of fervour, both the crowd and the players. I'm going for quarterfinals too. I'm going for round of eight for the United States. Cannot see them getting any further.

00:37:09
Ken Davies
Just don't think they'll score enough goals.
00:37:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think we then we both agree. We both agree they'll get to the 32. We both agree that with a favourable draw in the 16s, they'll get to the quarterfinals round of eight. We're both on the same.
00:37:19
Ken Davies
Yep. I think I'll make a note in my notebook that USA are going to, because we'll be able, by the time we finish this, we won't even have to play the World Cup.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. The reality is we're going to look at the USA and other teams much closer to the actual World Cup. And it'll be interesting to see what we've talked about today compared to what we're going to talk about in a year's in a year's time, for example.
00:37:44
Ken Davies
It will. It Yeah, but we have got, what is 64 teams? 48 teams to get through.
