A Thrilling Game Turnaround

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello there. Wow. I mean, I hope everyone's as excited as we are about to start talking about that game. I mean, it was a serious thrill ride from start to finish. um I've sort of taken the day to sort of process it. How are you feeling after after Monday night?
00:00:26
Jack Kelly
Well, I haven't really sunk in. um Personally my position within the press box, you have to keep a level of professionalism about yourself.
00:00:38
Jack Kelly
in a Derby game. And of course, you know, we were sitting in the 87th, 88th, 89th minute thinking this is going to be one of the most frustrating defeats ever. I was dreading the post-match press conferences. I didn't want to sit through any of them and sort of have to work my way through it and do everything I needed to do. And I just thought, God, this is actually going to be quite miserable. And and and then in the next 10 minutes, it turned from that to probably one of the best nights of my career so far.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, it was it was was

Fulham's Struggle for Breakthrough

00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
just ridiculous. i was um I was sitting next to my dad throughout the entire game and I kept turning over to him and he sort of had in hands going, it's just going to be one of those games, isn't it? It's just going to be one of those where we just sit on top the entire game and somehow we just end up losing it 1-0. I mean you could sort of feel it coming um and we kept looking down at Marco and Marco's just sort of apoplectic sort of losing his mind down there and and for good reason I think I don't know what it was. I've never seen so many blocked passes, blocked shots, just blocks when we're trying to get into their own box.
00:01:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we still had 43 something um ah touches in the opposition box, which I've not seen us do all season.

Substitutions Lead to Fulham Goal

00:02:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I mean, what what do you think it was that that got us over the line in the end? Was it just a great bit of management from Marco to bring on those subs?
00:02:08
Jack Kelly
Do you know what, I thought about this quite a lot today in terms of like, you know, you look at the 11 we played with Sander Berger sitting and with Pereira and Smith Rowan, that's obviously very creative and very attacking. But it did get to a point in the second half where it was getting a little bit stale.
00:02:24
Jack Kelly
when none of those sort of combinations were working, but like you say, this everything was getting blocked. And even when, you know, we did change it up, that that was still happening, but it did feel as though we needed fresh legs. And with players like Adama and players like Wilson, they had energy to go right until the last minute. So even at six minutes, they've had a time when, I think I remember Flecken having the ball in his arms, you know, in in the first minute, probably with players still thinking, right, we've still got five minutes, we might as well go for it.
00:02:51
Jack Kelly
and um and And that's what we did. I mean, yes, the goal is a tad lucky, the first one. Yes, it's yeah it's a bit of a fluke.
00:03:03
Jack Kelly
But so was Morgan Rogers' deflected shot ah against against us a couple of weeks ago. So was Doku's shot, which basically flew into the back of the net. I mean, it it's about time that we put a ball in the back of the net.
00:03:15
Jack Kelly
That was a complete fluke. And it's not like it was undeserved. It's not like it's we've got away with one. it's We dominated the whole game. and we And we deserved a score earlier in the game.
00:03:26
Jack Kelly
And it just happened. and We got it later on in the game.
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:03:32
Jack Kelly
Wow, that's so weird.
00:03:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
but foot that The first half though, it was sort of a weird it was a weird back and forth. the first half i mean To be honest, throughout the entire game, but we were so dominant. I mean i remember coming out at half time and checking the possession stats and being surprised that it was only like 65% or something. It really felt like we had the ball the entire time.
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know my dad kept looking at me and saying, God, it sort it of feels like watching Arsenal, just sort of passing it out and around the box, out and around the box, out and around the box, just sort of hoping that we find a route in.

Brentford's Unexpected Goal and Fan Frustration

00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
The goal from Brentford sort of killed us for about foot ten five, 10 minutes though. And it was a complete goal out of nothing. But to be fair, what a strike. um We had a great angle on it from where we were sitting in the riverside end.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if Leno can do any better. I just think it's hit that hard. What do you think?
00:04:26
Jack Kelly
It was an extraordinary goal. I think Bassey was a little bit unlucky. He got caught out and then suddenly were out of position a little bit. There was too much space within those areas and he just went for goal and flew into the back of the net. It was the first real chance they'd had all game um and they were happy just to score that.
00:04:48
Jack Kelly
The thing is, that i'd see a team like Brentford, I would expect them to to to score and then be like, well, let's try and you know stamp our authority and use the likes of Vista, use the likes of Emboyamo to get a second goal. But we were so good at overturning the ball in in situations and and basically just going, OK, we'll take the game to you instead. But they just couldn't get out at all. And Brentford fans were getting insanely frustrated. I could hear them from where I was situated, just sort of up in arms at times. It almost reminded me of reactions i've heard from the west town fans during the game we played against them and again just being utterly utterly dominant in those games um and we were last night yeah it was a good goal but it means nothing
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm. Hmm.
00:05:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
why Why do you think that Brentford satho sat off us so so just like so aggressively? like It just looked like they didn't want to play football against us almost. like um I mean, I've not seen Brentford been um you know be under the cosh like that all all season, really. And it was strange, because I think you're right there. I was expecting them, you know once they sort of got that goal, because they'd been nowhere in the game so far, once they got that goal, that would give them a bit of impetus.
00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
to go on and try and get something from it. But they sort of just sat off us the entire time. um Why do you think that was?
00:06:13
Jack Kelly
I think we had a level of, we're at home, it's the Derby, it's Monday night football, we're literally not going to lie down and take a 1-0 defeat, we're just going to go full throttle and try and win the game um and try and get her back in the game and I don't think they had a response to

Berger's Defensive Play and Historical Echoes

00:06:31
Jack Kelly
that. um They obviously, they kept a very, very good shape throughout the whole game. They were playing 4-3-3 anyway, and they had a good outball if they needed to. I keep getting spammed by Tony Khan, keeps liking all my tweets. I think I'm enjoying it, but it's utterly bizarre. um So I'm getting very distracted, I should probably put my phone away. Anyway, I just don't think that necessarily
00:06:55
Jack Kelly
given you know their games of later have been a bit a bit weird they've conceded some i actually think now thinking about it now the amount of goals they've conceded this season they're probably just thinking let's try and hold on and defend and see how well that get how far that gets us
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:07:11
Jack Kelly
And of course, if we do get the ball in transition, we do have it Waymo, we do have Visser, we do have Sade or Carvalho who can come off the bench and create something. um but But I have to put a lot of that credit down to the likes of Sander Berger, Andreas Pereira sometimes, who was tracking back and winning the ball back, our fallbacks doing very, very well to sort of nullify their threats. And I mean, the second half especially, they just couldn't do anything.
00:07:38
Jack Kelly
And it is ironic that the only time they sort of ventured forward, and by the way, Norman scored, was when we equalized.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's a good point. um And you touched on Zander Berger there. How good was he last night? I mean, I think that's the first time when we've really seen what he's about. I was a bit worried at first.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He sort of looked still a bit Bambi ish because he's he's a big lad and got his legs seem to go everywhere. But God, thank God they did because he blocked a lot of shots last night, especially towards the end.
00:08:06
Jack Kelly
yeah
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think that's probably his best performance in a Fulham shirt so far. Wouldn't you agree?
00:08:14
Jack Kelly
Yeah, I was quite worried about Sanderberger because you look at the two performances, the last two performances um against Aston Villa and Everton. Villa didn't go so well. Everton was much better. That was just due to the way that the opposition imposed their games ah game on us. And I was just a bit like, well, if If Sanderburger is up against Brentford and you've got high presses in Visser and then Boimo players I've already mentioned and Lewis Potter, he could be under a, he could be in a bit of trouble here. But actually, he used that sort of tackling side of the game, defensive style side of the game, almost like a Joplin, you're blocking those transitions, blocking um passes, passing lanes and and winning ball back in positions where Fulham could mount another attack.
00:09:02
Jack Kelly
And then, of course, the crucial sort of block at the end, which sort of reminded me of, and reminds a lot of fans of the Ollie Norwood one he did in the playoff final against Aston Villa, which essentially won us the game. and And that block in itself essentially almost, well, did sort of win us the game as well. It makes that block, the shot's going to come in, it's going to be another shot after Leno had to parry away. Calvaleo's shot, would he be set in time to make that save?
00:09:26
Jack Kelly
But Berger obviously makes the tackle. I think his performance went under the radar last night. I think that throughout, I mean, the whole chaos of the game, you have to look at those individual performances, the vital blocks that he made, especially in that final moment. And yeah, super pleased with with him. And actually, you know, now that Lucas is out and Berger, we have to get used to bit playing on midfield. um I feel much more comfortable with him being in that position.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do we have any more um insight onto when Lukic is going to be back? Have you heard anything inside Fulham that seems to suggest that he might be

Player Injuries and Training Insights

00:10:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
coming back soon? Or is it a bit of a longer injury than we've maybe first anticipated?
00:10:06
Jack Kelly
I hear he's back in training. i that That's actually the first time I've said that out loud.
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK.
00:10:11
Jack Kelly
I was told it and I probably shouldn't disclose it, but hey-ho.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh.
00:10:16
Jack Kelly
Doesn't really mean anything. I don't think he's anywhere near playing against Crystal Palace. I i would imagine the Wolverhampton Wanderers game, he'll be back. um At least in contention, if not, I'd be spurs.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
show Sure.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think um just before we come on to the second half and have a little break, Raul Jimenez, he's sort of been on fire for the last couple of games, but I think he was pretty anonymous last night. He's probably, I think our strikers in Muniz and Jimenez, who both played, were sort of, I mean, I think Rodgeri sort of did more when he came on, but Raul Jimenez, I thought, was really anonymous but um last night.
00:10:54
Jack Kelly
You know, him and his had a really weird evening because he it felt like he would have spent more time on the floor than on his feet.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:11:01
Jack Kelly
ah I think there there was a point to be made and I don't know because I i actually probably need to watch the coverage back.
00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:06
Jack Kelly
because i I came home last night at like 2am after a celebration of the win after work.
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:11:13
Jack Kelly
And the first thing I did is I watched the last 10 minutes of the game um just to see the added time, see when it goes. What I would say is that What would I say?
00:11:25
Jack Kelly
What would I say is that I think that Jimenez might have had a case to have a penalty in the in the start of the second half. ah But obviously it was waved away, the AR must have checked it. and There was a couple of times he got like in behind right at the start of the second half, basically the exact same opportunity.
00:11:39
Jack Kelly
He couldn't quite make anything of it. But um yeah, no, it wasn't a great night.
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:43
Jack Kelly
There was one instance where he held the ball up really nicely, but he just kept getting like, clipped and fouled. um And yeah, I think most of the good play came from Nelson, from Smithrow, from our wide players in Robinson, and it won't be as well, we obviously Adama when he came on.
00:11:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:11:59
Jack Kelly
Robinson was magnificent. but yeah Tough night for him. and e you know When your strikers don't score, or anyone wasn't scoring, it has to be a player off the bench.
00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:07
Jack Kelly
Do you know you know like the the best thing about this one? and I know it's it's not quite a good question you ask, but Harry Wilson scoring, he's almost been like the forgotten man at Fulham. i mean No leaks that start.
00:12:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:19
Jack Kelly
I see his name on the team sheet. I see him on the bench. you go well yeah He might come on at some point. but he genuinely is or was quite ah like his his sort of film career was almost fading out a little bit to the point where I was quite accepted that he might move on and now it's like he's become a cult hero, like genuinely.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
For sure, for sure, for sure. And before we come on and talk more about the beautiful boy that is Harry Wilson, let me just tell you a bit about our sponsor, Zencaster. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spend a lot of time selecting our delivery platform, and Zencaster came out the clear winner. With 4K video recording from your phone and AI editing that automatically removes all those ums and ahs, it's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently.
00:13:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you're ready to tell your story, check out the link in the show description to learn more about Zencaster. So Harry Wilson, like he's stolen the headlines there and and and rightfully so. um You're right, he's he's sort of, I don't know, sort of disappeared a bit recently. But if you look at his form, I mean, over the last five games, the club and country has four goals now over the last five games. So he's he's in a real, I don't know, spurt of goal scoring form. So, I mean,
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe Maybe that's going to give Marco some selection dilemma and looking ahead to to Crystal Palace. But to be honest, Rhys Nelson had a hell of a game, I thought.
00:13:41
Jack Kelly
so yeah
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought he gave the right back for for Brentford all sorts of issues, all game. um So I think we're sort of spoiled for choice at the moment, down the wings.
00:13:55
Jack Kelly
We're genuinely, and I'm not even exaggerating here, we're one of the best teams in the Premier League. we like We are, like the way we play our squad. um I haven't even thought about the palace game yet and it's when, like today is Wednesday, this podcast is for Wednesday.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:14:12
Jack Kelly
i have like it's it's it's It's soon. Obviously we're still riding the crest of a wave of what was Monday night, but
00:14:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:14:20
Jack Kelly
someone mentioned it to me earlier, do you think we should play Harry Wilson in the 10 on Saturday? And the more I thought about it, and thought about Pereira's performance last awesome night, and I was thinking, yeah. I mean, I don't necessarily think, and he was asked this, you know, after the game Marco, like, like is he now gonna start against Palace? And it's not as easy as that, is it? Like, when you've got Pereira, he's quite set in the 10. But then again, like,
00:14:42
Jack Kelly
you know, maybe 60 minutes in, it's not going our way, Pereira's played 60 minutes and hasn't made an impact, then Wilson can be that man. And actually, because we do have a Dharma Troy array, let's just say that Nelson starts on the left again, and we've got a Dharma Troy to bring off the bench. If we if that is the case,
00:15:00
Jack Kelly
then suddenly that space is already occupied. So Wilson can and has shown previously to play in the 10, scored the two goals from in the 10 position as well, and then play maybe TC a little bit deeper who also can play in the 10.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:13
Jack Kelly
The flexibility of these positions that these attacking players can play in is genuinely such a bonus because it adds just a different dimension.
00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:21
Jack Kelly
The opposition don't know what's coming next, honestly. It's it's it's genuinely quite exciting.
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, and look at that that would you I think this is probably right. I would say that's the earliest I've ever seen Marco take off Andres, especially this season. But it was definitely the right call.
00:15:36
Jack Kelly
Yeah, that's true.
00:15:40
Jack Kelly
Yeah, it was because he gave the ball away.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Definitely.
00:15:43
Jack Kelly
Even in the spells where we were having so much of the ball, he actually a couple of times got the touch wrong, and he ended up giving the ball away, and the whole attack would break down.
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:15:52
Jack Kelly
And that's obviously not right. I actually think that someone like Tom Kenny, whose ball retention is so, so good at passing the ball, he's the one who plays it to Robinson for the winning goal.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:01
Jack Kelly
Harry Wilson, really good on his feet as well. Adama Troyer getting it out wide, taking on a man. It genuinely, genuinely is really, really exciting. um And it was a good decision to bring off Pereira because you cannot, you cannot, as much as Silva likes him, you cannot keep relying on Pereira if he can't deliver on the pitch, especially in a losing scenario.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:16:24
Jack Kelly
There's so many other players who can come off the bench and make a difference, and we saw that last night.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Essentially, when when we're talking about the subs that were made, I think they were all pretty much bang on. I've got to say, though, in the 82nd minute, when he takes off, Smith, Rowan, Reese, Nelson, Fakani and Wilson, I was sort of, well, obviously, I wasn't expecting us to win 2-1, but that was sort of the moment where I resigned myself to accept that we might be losing 1-0 here um because I just don't didn't, you know, they haven't really had much game time or all or season, them but they've come on and completely changed the game. I mean, completely changed the game. I think Cairny was a breath of fresh air. It was all about holding the ball and passing the ball to someone in white, which sounds very simple, but you did it perfectly.
00:17:27
Jack Kelly
Yeah, no, you're right. and you're right and I think that those subs
00:17:32
Jack Kelly
on paper look uninspiring, they don't look like they're going to change your game, but when the game is basically having the exact same pattern over and over again, like I said earlier, you do need to freshen up a little bit, and it's

Dramatic Victory through Late Substitutions

00:17:44
Jack Kelly
not like they're bad players TC and Wilson, they're actually very capable of coming up with big moments in big games. I mean I call TC a big game player, I still stand by that and I still think he had a massive part to play off the bench last night.
00:17:57
Jack Kelly
But it was just good to have something different off the bench. Smith Road was, like I say, excellent. Really good. But also, and TC can find a pass. TC always looks to go forward.
00:18:13
Jack Kelly
He's got like, ah someone described it as, he's got like a snooker shot of a pass. Like it's so adly arrowed and nice. And like he gets that ball. The full-time whistle still should go, by the way. TC gets the ball in his own half, or someone gets the ball in their own half but before the the winning goal. And I'm thinking, why is the whistle not going? But okay, TC gets it, drives it forward, plays it to Robinson, and we score. And I'm just like, well, okay, we'll take it. I mean, it's that it's the, honestly, I genuinely like,
00:18:43
Jack Kelly
i I've still like, my head is so so scrambled from what happened last night. I've watched the goal about a hundred times.
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was.
00:18:50
Jack Kelly
I'm sure you've been the same.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:53
Jack Kelly
Today's been the best working day of my life. It's just basically just been watching the highlights back.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, yeah it's it was one of my favorite. I mean, it's a West London Derby. And God, the Brentford fans were giving it some, even though they were doing nothing on the pitch all game. They're still giving it.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And to hear, you know, gentlemen Jim on the on the highlights, listening to it back on the Fulham channel and saying, right, you can you got you guys can go now off you go. I'm like, that is just so perfect.
00:19:19
Jack Kelly
He's brilliant.
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was but but that last 10, you know, the last 10 minutes, maybe you think about it. We score in the 92nd and then Carvalho misses ah to to win them the game.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we go up the other end and score. It's like a trifecta of brilliance.
00:19:32
Jack Kelly
It's
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think we've got to talk a bit about Carvalho.
00:19:35
Jack Kelly
poetry.
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was curious to see what reception he got. And I could see him jogging down the line. I was nudging Dad, but here we go. Here we go. Like, what's what's going to happen when he reaches the hammy end? And at first it was booze and then there was a few bits of applause and then loads of booze. So you were, you were bang on, I think.
00:19:58
Jack Kelly
Yeah, I'm glad that you've sort of given your perspective because I could hear it, but I obviously, when you're in the Hamas event, you'd have a better idea of what was going on. From what I was told, from someone who was in the Hammersmith End or someone who was in the Riverside.
00:20:12
Jack Kelly
He was basically goading the Fulham fans.
00:20:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:15
Jack Kelly
He did like a little love heart to him ah to the fans, which obviously would have like annoyed them because it's like, well, we're booing you.
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:20:23
Jack Kelly
Don't try and counteract that by giving us like, oh no, it's fine. It's all love. It's not all love. You're at Renford now, aren't you? I have to say, apart from his chance, um he was absolutely shocking i mean he was absolutely shocking um so out of place was barged off the ball once i think that might have been sharder actually on the other side but he he was barged off the ball by triore but um he was he wasn't actually getting into the game very very well the one thing i'll give him credit for is he had an instinct to run to the front post to receive the ball from the from the cross good save by leno if he'd have won the game i don't think i'd be sat here right now i think i'd be
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Terrible. Yeah, he was so bad.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:01
Jack Kelly
at the bottom of the River Thames. like it Genuinely, genuinely, genuinely it would have been a really bad situation for a lot of Fulham fans.
00:21:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah, no, you're not wrong. I mean, I was I was sort of watching him. I was watching Fulham play, but then I was sort of just out of the corner of my eye, sort of watching Carvalho because I did really like him as a Fulham player, obviously. And as much as I think he's been terrible, I mean, I don't want him to succeed it succeed at Brentford, but I sort of want him to.

Carvalho's Return and Fan Reactions

us to beat him, but him sort of play okay. But he looked so bad, like properly fish out of water. I mean, yeah, he he had one good shot on target, but he was on the pitch for well over 20 minutes. And he just looked so lost out there. I mean, I think Thomas Frank's a good manager. But based on performances like that, I think we've probably ended up dodging a bullet almost.
00:21:49
Jack Kelly
I suppose he's a number 10 having to play sort of in a defensive role because they were basically clinging on to the, to to the lead. i I think that basically they were, I can't remember what sort of shape they were in, but they must've been in like some sort of like one bank of five, maybe a four and maybe a one.
00:22:05
Jack Kelly
So maybe he was in that four. I can't quite remember all my focuses on Fulham in possession. I wasn't really looking at Brentford out possession. I'm not gonna lie, but, um,
00:22:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:22:15
Jack Kelly
Oh it's so funny as well, that brilliant like photo of him in the foreground, in the background, all you see are the full of players.
00:22:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
for
00:22:21
Jack Kelly
I was saying this on my channel earlier, like these aren't like these aren't strangers, these are players he's played with, one title with. like Harrison Reed, Harry Wilson, the winning goalscorer, Tom Caine, Antti Robinson, Rodrigo Muniz, it's genuinely like such an incredible narrative.
00:22:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:38
Jack Kelly
how he almost won the game the most undeserved win for Brentford at Craven Cottage in front of the Bees fans against his old team and he's ended up being on the losing team because he didn't score.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep, and before we talk about those two brilliant goals and break them down a bit more, let me just tell you a bit more about the GSPN.

Now if I was going to compare this goal, the first one, well the both of them are sort of semi-similar to another Fulham goal in my past, it would have to be Dempsey's chip against Juventus, just the way the ball seemed to
00:23:37
Jack Kelly
Mm.
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
hang in the air and everyone was sort of, it was like silence.
00:23:40
Jack Kelly
yeah
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It seems like being in the air for five seconds and everyone was like dead silent, like gripping each other and they and then it sort of trickles in. Flecken's turned the other way. You see him sink to his knees, like head on hands, you're like, oh, and it was just a moment.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the second goal is sort of the same thing.
00:23:59
Jack Kelly
Mm.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're sort of wrong foot Flecken, it's still hanging in the air.
00:24:00
Jack Kelly
Mm.
00:24:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're like, is it going wide? Is it not? And oh my God, I mean, you're right. He's probably written himself into folklore there.
00:24:08
Jack Kelly
Yeah, like there was a brilliant tweet someone did earlier. I can't quite remember who it was. It got a load of numbers because because it basically was a screenshot of the ball landing in the back of the net for Dempsey against the Juventus and the same thing happened last night. And it is genuinely identical.
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:24
Jack Kelly
You're literally identical, same camera angle, same corner of the net, same sort of goalkeeping position.
00:24:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:30
Jack Kelly
and From my possession position in the press box, I was on the first row, so I was actually quite low down.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:24:34
Jack Kelly
Usually you're a little bit higher up and you get ah' say a better view. but um I thought it went wide, like Wilson, I thought it went wide, and then the whole cloud but crowd erupts. I'm in the Johnny Haynes, and the Johnny Haynes, without being disrespectful, is fairly tame in terms of an atmosphere.
00:24:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:24:50
Jack Kelly
I think the Craven Cottage, as an atmosphere, if you're a neutral watching that game last night on the TV, you're actually gonna be like blown away by the scenes you saw at Craven Cottage. You'd be like,
00:25:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:25:02
Jack Kelly
I've seen Fulham get promoted and like I've watched like Fulham highlights before, but I've never seen the cottage like that. Or even at any like Fulham fan, I've never seen it like that before. Genuinely, Matthew, my brother, Luke, my brother, who were in the Hammers of End, they were bouncing up and down singing, Brent, forget battered. And they said the whole stand was shaking. It might've just fallen down. and But no, that's a stamp of bridge. that that's That's falling down, apparently.
00:25:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it it was it i mean there's just something about Monday nights at the cottage. I think every night game, genuinely, that I go to at the cottage at the moment, is but like in the last couple of years, has just always had a really good, strong atmosphere. I think the day games on the weekend are weak, yeah like if I'm being honest, especially in the riverside sand.
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is just quiet and full of tourists. But those night games, there is just something about them. And whoever scheduled Brentford v Fulham on a Monday night, you know, thank you so much, because that has got to be one of the best games of football I've seen live in a long time.
00:26:01
Jack Kelly
Hmm. Hmm.

Electric Night at Craven Cottage

00:26:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just I think every player on the pitch, apart from the two strikers, had an amazing game. It's great to have stories like Wilson and Kenny coming off the bench and sort of you know orchestrating those final two goals.
00:26:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
everything came together at the end. It's just it's sort of a shame that it didn't come together earlier, but also not because we'd have been robbed of that just beautiful moment at the end.
00:26:26
Jack Kelly
Yeah, you'd you'd rather win the game late on. against your rivals. I mean, given the narrative between Fulham and Brentford, there's always been late goals in those games from Brentford side and now for two occasions on our side, you know, Neil Mopay scored ah an equaliser against us in the 92nd minute, which basically gifted us the playoffs, which gave us the best memory the Fulham fan could ask for, which is winning the playoff final. So they've just done us another favour. And then last night, I mean, if you're a Brentford fan and I'm not, and I never will be, and I never will intend to even even speak to one,
00:26:56
Jack Kelly
I genuinely think you'd feel sick to your stomach and thank goodness for that.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So I know we haven't talked about looking forward and I know we, you know, it seems weird to, it was only yesterday, the game, but We do have another game coming up against Palace, and I just think this is a great run of games here to rack up some points.
00:27:03
Jack Kelly
That's a great thought.
00:27:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I know we should have had an extra two against Everton, and that one's really annoying. But met managing to get three out of that game, I think if we'd come away losing all three points there in a game where we've dominated it, I think that would have been a really bad way to go into Palace.
00:27:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But now, having done that, I think that's the perfect way to G.
00:27:35
Jack Kelly
Mm.
00:27:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Giga players up and get them firing again and about converting and scoring, you know, that's how it feels to win. And they won't forget that feeling for a while. So going into Palace, do you think we've just run with the same lineup?
00:27:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Do you move Pereira out? Because I think he's ah surely he's had enough, I don't know, bad, quote unquote, bad games to warrant at least a one game dropping. I was sort of advocating that last week, but, you know,
00:28:03
Jack Kelly
Yeah, i i think I think we don't change it. And the reason why is that because we actually did start the game very, very well with with good intentions. And I just mentioned earlier that I would actually look, the first change I would look to make is if Pereira's not performing, bring him off bring him off and put Wilson in the 10. Because it's just the impact he's had in the confidence that it will feel. Marco will bring him on the touchline at 65 minutes and say, look, think of what happened on Monday night, occupy that space in the pocket.
00:28:32
Jack Kelly
you Create something link up with the wingers get inside the box like exactly what you did on Monday and who knows what happens And we're not palace away Right now.
00:28:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:28:40
Jack Kelly
I know that okay, they drew to they drew to wolves and played much better, but they were about as a Wharton Hughes is suspended. They have to be in Jeffrey Schlipp. He's got so much stick from the palace fans for his last performance against Aston Villa I don't think Kamala does anything special right now touch wood because you know, what he you know full of my life and they'll always concede and um Obviously John Flick, Mateta, very, very good player.
00:29:01
Jack Kelly
They've got a ah good back three with two very good wing backs as well and Mitchell and Munoz.
00:29:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:06
Jack Kelly
But I think right now we're riding a crest of a wave. And I was going to write this earlier in the program notes I had to send over to Crystal Palace, but I didn't want to jinx it. But I'll say it here. This is the worst possible time to play Fulham.
00:29:18
Jack Kelly
The worst possible time to play Fulham.
00:29:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, God, I mean, I'm I completely agree with you, to be honest. I mean, looks it's all well and good to be to be you know a little bit biased. But i I mean, I said this at the beginning of the season and I'm going to say it again now, it's one of the most confident times that I felt about Fulham in terms of a product on the pitch and how we play. We're so consistent.
00:29:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like I've never really said that about Fulham. Like we're really consistent. And I think the only season I can compare it to is that one season with Broy where we've ended up finishing seventh. It sort of feels like one of those mercurial seasons for us as a club.
00:29:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I think you're you're totally right.
00:29:59
Jack Kelly
Yeah.
00:30:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think if if it comes to the best of the rest, I'd say where're we're seriously up there. You know, the same way that people have been talking about Brighton in the last couple of years, I think is sort of where we're at.
00:30:12
Jack Kelly
it's It's an extraordinary season so far where you've basically got like Brighton, Arsel, Bournemouth and Forest all completely performing above expectation. Even you'd have to say Brentford. And let's just hope that we can continue that form. Crystal Palace still... No, they beat Spurs, aren't they? Yeah, they they beat Spurs. they They have a win under their belt and they want to build on that, obviously, after their last home game against Spurs. But this is a really, really bad time to play Fulham.
00:30:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, there you go. You've heard it there first, folks. You don't want to play Fulham right now. um We'll hope all this form continues and hope everyone had a great little celebration last night, because we certainly did. We'll see you all in the next episode, but from us, it's goodbye.
