Phil Gordon: One.

Dave: Perfect.

Phil Gordon: And good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to Laughing Liberally Arizona. And you may have noticed my hat. This is the

Dave: No, my I... so i

Phil Gordon: Popat.

Dave: I didn't notice you had, no.

Phil Gordon: No. Well, ah Dave, because you're you're used to going to church, you're you know a ah big fan of the Pope. Uh... For those of us maybe that aren't, this is the... Actual.

Phil Gordon: Uh, Pope Hat. that was given away at White Sox Park. Uh... Maybe over a week ago. In commemoration for those that aren't big baseball fans, it turns out that Pope Leo In his previous...

Phil Gordon: Uh... position was a bishop In the city of Chicago. at a church. And. Was there... during the 2005 White Sox World Series victory.

Dave: it

Phil Gordon: He was a big fan. and he would go to many games. In fact, I believe he threw out a ball. at one of the World Series games.

Dave: wow

Phil Gordon: And the seat, Dave, that he used to sit in at White Sox Park. And it was a pretty good seat. so

Dave: better

Phil Gordon: We know where those, where those. Plate donations are going. ah It is now commemorated as Pope Leo's seat. You can go take a picture at it. that sort of thing.

Phil Gordon: But it was so popular.

Phil Gordon: Yes, Dave.

Dave: I was asking you, it's like, did the Pope have season tickets? I mean, he was a he was a bishop then, right?

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: the Did you hear this?

Phil Gordon: I don't know if he had...

Dave: We've got a few seconds.

Phil Gordon: season tickets he probably wouldn't have been able to make the Sunday games I'm guessing

Dave: perfect

Phil Gordon: But... ah He was a regular fan.

Dave: Where is my market? No.

Phil Gordon: He was a regular fan, ah you know, maybe by radio, TV, who knows. But he would go to many games. And he did. There are very. various photographs of him at the game.

Dave: So he was always...

Phil Gordon: ah During the.

Dave: It's in the same scene.

Phil Gordon: 2005.

Dave: That was his seat, though, always in that same seat.

Phil Gordon: I don't know about the same seat, but that was, I think, the seat he sat in during the World Series. Okay. I think you got to grease a few palms at Sox Park, Dave, to get that seed every game.

Phil Gordon: And. This was a promotion giveaway It was so popular, Dave. The White Sox. are popular again and and selling out seats. It was so popular.

Phil Gordon: that you know how these promotions usually the first 15 000 the first 20 000 They decided it was so popular. Everybody. in attendance was going to get one.

Phil Gordon: So they loaded the park.

Dave: That's a big deal.

Phil Gordon: They filled it at about 40 ,000. um i Jerry Reinsdorf is still doing cartwheels, Dave, the owner of the White Sox. And everybody got a seat well.

Phil Gordon: As you know, and our listeners know if they've been watching our shows. I had just spent. a month in Chicago in July. and went to many White Sox games. In fact, I got the Monotaka Murakami bobblehead giveaway that we looked at on the show I brought as a guest. I should bring it back out.

Phil Gordon: ah But... ah after I had left was when they scheduled this Popat giveaway. So my son, who lives in Chicago, was kind enough to go to the game.

Phil Gordon: I bought him a chicken. And he went to the game and sent me the Pope hat. So here we go. It's beautiful. It's a very high quality, I must say, Dave.

Dave: Yeah, that's what I wanted to say to you.

Phil Gordon: And.

Dave: They have a giveaway. Like you say, they limited first 10 ,000, first 15 ,000. But usually it's something like a t -shirt or even a bobblehead. This... this is This is not a cheapo hat there.

Dave: that's ah That's a nice...

Phil Gordon: No, I wanted you to see the little...

Dave: that's a nice Welcome.

Phil Gordon: the tassels

Dave: Yeah. Oh my God. I didn't understand.

Phil Gordon: And it's got the beautiful White Sox logo. Oh, that's the old logo, Dave.

Dave: yeah

Phil Gordon: That's like the 1959 logo.

Dave: right yeah

Phil Gordon: The Go -Go White Sox.

Dave: and And... is i mean it looks it's not that's not that's not foam that's not like the finger but the number one figure. Is that foam?

Phil Gordon: You know, it's not far off of the foam finger, which is a high quality product, Dave. I think this will last at least into the next millennium. All right.

Dave: Is that Mike?

Phil Gordon: I hope to wear it. to Vatican City. I would love to meet the Pope. You know who did meet the Pope, by the way, in Vatican City? A .J. Pruszynski.

Dave: oh okay

Phil Gordon: the former White Sox catcher who was on that White Sox 2005 team. and he does a very excellent podcast called foul territory And he reported on there.

Dave: there are

Phil Gordon: how he went to visit the Pope. He got an audience. It was a highlight of his life.

Dave: There are a lot of pretty good baseball podcasts. I've noticed. ah Trevor May, Trevor May, who, you know, Trevor May, he was a pitcher, he was with Mets, and he's a lot of other, is he with the White Sox, Trevor May?

Phil Gordon: Oh yes.

Phil Gordon: No, I believe he's now with the Brewers.

Dave: I think he was with... I think it was with the Rockies or something, but they're a member of a really good podcast.

Phil Gordon: Hmm?

Dave: uh covering baseball and you know i remember Like when I was a kid, it was like... you're the same way it's like you know you didn't have the same access to sports that you do now I mean... you know I mean, I lived in Ohio. I was listening to the Mets game. We had a shortwave radio.

Dave: And there weren't a lot of games televised, things like that. And so we you and I, you know. Wee. We grew up together in two different states.

Dave: Bye. You know, for baseball, you would get sporting news. You would get baseball. if You would read everything. You read it over and over again. You really would know the teams very, very well. And I thought, you know, I really missed that. But I think the podcast is sort of a version of that where you can.

Dave: really get a lot of you know, information and inside stuff. Uh, A lot of good ones. Trevor Bayes is very good. Peace.

Phil Gordon: it's ah It's wonderful. In fact, there's a whole series, Dave, which I'm sure you're familiar, called Lockdown. And then whatever the team is, locked on Mets, locked on White Sox. And I listened to many of them. In fact, I just listened to the locked on.

Phil Gordon: ah Guardians. Because I wanted to hear from the Guardian's perspective. what they were saying about the White Sox, because they're creeping up there where they're within about. three and a half games or so.

Phil Gordon: And of course. ah Guardians fans. ah are very full of themselves dave if i

Dave: good

Phil Gordon: if I may draw that conclusion. ah They actually think they've got a chance to win the Central Division. uh very delusional and then

Dave: You're welcome. philip No. there's nothing like a pennant race though i mean I know you would like to run away with it. But, you know, and we talked about the 1967 pennant race and great pennant. of the past. and you know Yeah, the Guardians may creep up, but I mean... It just makes it that much more exciting. Those games are just going to be...

Dave: So great to watch.

Phil Gordon: Exactly, Dave. And as we've discussed many times. i As I am perhaps the world's greatest, second greatest White Sox fan, Pope Leo.

Phil Gordon: would be the greatest White Sox fan. Uh, i i i Do not like the Cubs. That's inherent. I think we went through this discussion on a previous show, the difference between White Sox fans and Cub fans.

Phil Gordon: And maybe be my greatest pleasure in life, Dave. As I shared with you on that podcast that my older brother, my dear late older brother, Alan. ah drilled in me as a child.

Phil Gordon: that it was far more important for the Cubs to lose than for the Sox to win. And you have to be from Chicago to understand that, but it's true.

Dave: Well Phil...

Phil Gordon: And so, therefore...

Dave: Yup. um'm I'm... I'm from New York. I'm a Mets fan. I hate the Yankees. Well, I'm a Mets fan. i know i've still I would rather the Mets win. and and I would love it if the Mets win and the Yankees lose.

Dave: But then I read about it in the New York Post the next day, and you'd think that the Mets lost and the Yankees won. where they cover it. but um

Phil Gordon: Dave, are you...

Dave: I'm with you, but it's just I'm not quite as far gone as you. But, see, the Mets have always been more desperate for wins than the White Sox. Probably explains it.

Phil Gordon: Dave, are you getting enough iron?

Phil Gordon: I think there's a problem there. Maybe maybe new york does not have New York fans do not have the gonads. that White Sox fans have.

Dave: Oh well. now okay

Phil Gordon: ah Let me just keep it in the realm of the Cubs because. Uh... While the White Sox fan... What? Could rather have the Cubs lose. then the White Sox win. That is not...

Phil Gordon: In reverse. the Cub fan philosophy. The Cub fan philosophy, Dave, is more like that girl who won't acknowledge you. They don't acknowledge that the White Sox exist.

Dave: i said They're above it. They're just too above it.

Phil Gordon: They're just above it. They, you know, they they they they don't know. They don't know of the American League. They don't know about the White Sox. It's not, they don't go south of Madison Street in Chicago.

Dave: I'm sorry. Well, think you know...

Phil Gordon: So they're unaware of it.

Dave: Yankee fans certainly ah feel their... superior to everybody. you know uh And it's awesome.

Phil Gordon: Well, let me share this little. ah

Dave: the little brother in town and if the Mets have a great season they're kind of like Oh, good for you, Mets. Good for you. You know, and boasting about their 27 rings or whatever. it is so Yeah.

Dave: So good.

Phil Gordon: that yeah That wouldn't be the case in Chicago, Dave. ah Let me share a small anecdote. When it first became known after Pope Leo... was named pope that he was a baseball fan.

Phil Gordon: before he I don't know if this was a reporter who uncovered this or if he mentioned it. But it. He didn't mention. What a White Sox fan he was, that he went to the games, that he was there in 05.

Phil Gordon: that he threw out a ball. And Cub fans. in their own deluded mentality, Dave, assumed he was a Cub fan. So you had all these Facebook posts and posts on TikTok and everywhere going out showing Pope Leo with a cub hat.

Phil Gordon: So. The Cub fan cannot be humiliated. It's not possible.

Dave: think

Phil Gordon: ah But. I wonder how they feel about it in the privacy you know of their own little cub caves. But they have to be humiliated that Leo has revealed what a White Sox fan he is. And this must be killing them that I'm wearing this, Dave.

Dave: and Since the Mets are... unlikely to make it to the playoffs this year. I'm rooting for all Chicago World Series, the second city of World Series. i'm Fantastic. With two two teams that go back to the beginning of baseball, two of the original teams.

Dave: And and with you know know over the years, they've never really met up, but that would be a gas.

Phil Gordon: Well, we're going to have to part ways there, Dave.

Dave: You don't want to see the Cubs get close.

Phil Gordon: I'm looking forward to. ah I don't even like to see the Cubs advance. But I'm looking for the... Cub collapse. either against the Dodgers or the Brewers or the Braves.

Dave: It sounds like...

Phil Gordon: That's always a great. Great enjoyment for me.

Dave: It sounds like somebody doesn't have the cojones to take the chance that the Cubs might beat them. in in the World Series. Come on now.

Phil Gordon: Well, you you call it what you want, Dave, but... ah ah With my popad on, let me just say death to the Cubs.

Dave: no no I feel you. I mean, I've had teams that I've hated so much. that i But a loss was really important. But I can't give up on that swing. I can never do that. You know.

Phil Gordon: Understood.

Dave: I don't remember.

Phil Gordon: Understood.

Dave: I remember a meeting with the Pope because you know I was raised Catholic. I'm i'm half Catholic, half Jewish. I got to ask him, I go, my my friend Phil like wishes harm upon the cubs. Is that a sim? It's still going to hell. like I go, and I'll tell him, i got he he would he would like kind of.

Dave: He would hope almost hope for a White Sox loss if it meant the Cubs could win. hope can can is that okay or What would you say?

Phil Gordon: It is not okay.

Dave: What if the Pope castigated you for that? You don't care.

Phil Gordon: Well. I'm Jewish, so what the what the hell do I care, Dave? you know ah

Dave: That's right. Right.

Phil Gordon: It would have to be the board of rabbis.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: The Board of Rabbis, which let me...

Dave: there's There's the poem.

Phil Gordon: up The Board of Rabbis, which Dave, didn't the Cubs try that for a few years with the coaches?

Dave: College of Coaches, yeah.

Phil Gordon: where they had no manager.

Dave: huh

Phil Gordon: I think they had the board of rabbis.

Dave: Yeah, good work. hard you

Phil Gordon: making the decision. Dave, by the way, and and let's move off this subject soon, but uh I did want to say, should you get that? meeting with the Pope, you are welcome.

Phil Gordon: to borrow my hat.

Dave: Oh, that'd be great, yeah. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if we show up wearing the same hat?

Phil Gordon: Oh, yeah we would have this audience together?

Dave: Hey. I think we've got to move along because we're... We're 13 minutes in and we're talking about baseball, but... I wore my... Johan Santana jersey here today, Phil. See that? You're going to stand tomorrow.

Phil Gordon: Very lovely. I did not realize that he was number 57.

Dave: 57. Johan Santana. pitched the first no -hitter in Mets history. which was very frustrating for Mets fans because the Mets had a lot of great pitchers and they never they never got the no -hitter.

Dave: Like Seaver got a no -hitter after he left the Mets. Nolan Ryan got seven no -hitters after he left the Mets. Gooden threw his after he left the Mets. On and on. even a guy named Philip Humber.

Phil Gordon: Sure.

Dave: Remember Phillip Humber? pretty Pretty obscure. in 2012 uh pitched a perfect game he had been a met and he was at the twins and he pitched a perfect game He his he would pay won only 26 games lifetime.

Dave: The ERA was like five and a half, but... Sometimes the magic just hits you. And you do that. But I'll say this. If Santana were pitching today, he if he pitched that game today.

Dave: The replay would show. that he would have been.

Phil Gordon: Whoa. Whoa.

Dave: Carlos Beltran was with the Cardinals at the time and he hit one down the left field line and the Empire called it foul. and you see on the replay you can see a little Little puff of chalk. coming up so

Phil Gordon: Wow.

Dave: You might want to watch some of this.

Phil Gordon: Okay. Well, Dave, let's not let's not move off of baseball totally.

Dave: Okay.

Phil Gordon: Because. ah Our, uh...

Dave: That's never a problem.

Phil Gordon: Viewers,

Dave: this

Phil Gordon: No. But our viewers viewers will remember that we talked about... comedians and uh comedians and their sons and daughters that are performing comedy well I think you and I were chatting over lunch at Portillo's.

Phil Gordon: ah Wouldn't it be fun to look at? baseball family dynasties in the same way. and look at ah players who had children that played. at There's actually a lot of them.

Phil Gordon: Let's do a few. And I think let's just go alphabetical, I think, Dave.

Dave: so okay

Phil Gordon: Let me start with a great. uh really Wonderful catcher. Sandy Alomar.

Dave: oh yeah

Phil Gordon: ah Who, uh... Actually, I take that back. Sandy Alomar was not the catcher. It was his a son that was the catcher. Sandy Alomar was an infielder originally with the White Sox, later went on to Cleveland.

Phil Gordon: He had the... rather notorious incident where he spit on an umpire.

Dave: but

Phil Gordon: ah which hurt his chances, but I do believe did get into the Hall of Fame. despite that black mark.

Dave: I, uh... That sounds like Robbie Almar.

Phil Gordon: You are so right.

Dave: He was the spreader.

Phil Gordon: His dad, Sandy, a great player. So let's now talk about the kids.

Dave: was

Phil Gordon: And there were two excellent ballplayer kids. Robbie Alomar. Who?

Dave: this

Phil Gordon: owns that spitting incident and did get into the Hall of Fame, I believe. And his brother, Sandy Alomar Jr. What for both Cleveland? and Chicago. And. Possibly Detroit, Dave.

Dave: i don't remember i don't remember that

Phil Gordon: But there's a player who was really good. And his kids were even better.

Dave: right right yeah yeah

Phil Gordon: All right. I'll keep it on the A's here. and Let me ah roll through the A's. Then why don't you take a letter?

Dave: All right. I know we're not going to do all of them.

Phil Gordon: Uh...

Dave: But there, but there are, there are like...

Phil Gordon: No.

Dave: Hundreds of these right?

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: That's what I mean.

Phil Gordon: let's Let's go through the beginning of the alphabet anyway.

Dave: Simple. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: ah The great Felipe Alou, Dave.

Dave: course

Phil Gordon: ah You know. family history all around on this. First off, there's the Alou brothers, right?

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: There was his brother. Uh... Hey, Zeus, hello. And Maddie Alou. And I believe all the Alou brothers at one time were in the Giants outfield.

Dave: And Joan Southwell at the same time, yep.

Phil Gordon: Then they dispersed all over the place, and then... Felipe Alou. Had a son, Moises Alou. who of course was on that.

Dave: right

Phil Gordon: Chicago Cubs, very successful playoff team. And I think he is the only one of the Alou brothers to have a child who played Major League Baseball. But again, two very good players.

Dave: yep Phil, I thought where you were heading with this is that youre the delight the delight you took. When Moises Alou approached the stands... for a flat foul ball.

Dave: How delighted were you? and how much And how much do you love that? What's the guy's? You can't recover. Who was the guy?

Phil Gordon: Chapman. Chapman, I believe, Mark Chapman.

Dave: Thanks. The guy in the stance?

Phil Gordon: Mark Chapman, Mark Chapman, I think was his name. And, you know. First off, I'm going to say. I believe that and still believe today there was some papal intervention in that.

Phil Gordon: And. um What happened was. He extended his hands over the wall. That railing is. is a little bit low, though you still have to... get that glove up there and maybe jump to. to get into the stands.

Phil Gordon: which Moises did. but Chapman beat him to it. and caught that ball. before Moises could catch the ball. And.

Phil Gordon: I think it was Dave just ruled a foul ball. I don't think it was considered interference.

Dave: Yeah, well well, the thing about that play was... i think the His name was Steve Bartman. By the way, Steve Bartlett.

Phil Gordon: Bartman, not Chapman, Bartman.

Dave: ah Mark Chapman. shot John Lennon.

Phil Gordon: And also as a reliever for the Boston Red Sox, I believe.

Dave: So I think on that.

Phil Gordon: Not the same guy.

Dave: slide i think the ball was out of play meaning it would have come down in the stands

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: So... there's no interference because the ball was clearly foul. If it would be if he had reached over... And then they would have had an argument, but they didn't really have one because all this was found.

Phil Gordon: You're right about that, sir. and uh ah You're right. I confused Mark David Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, with... This young man.

Phil Gordon: ah But he suffered. almost the same rebuke that Mark David Chapman suffered.

Dave: Yep.

Phil Gordon: He was persona non gratis in Chicago, Dave. People would seek out his address and, you know. Haunt this kid. ah And.

Phil Gordon: And he was a Cub fan. If you look at the picture, he's wearing like a Cub hat, a Cub jacket.

Dave: yeah yeah

Phil Gordon: um

Dave: Well, you know, I...

Phil Gordon: You know, it was just a shame.

Dave: I know people are upset and it kind of reminds me of... ah how much abuse Bill Buckner took after the ball went through his legs in the World Series.

Phil Gordon: Yes, yes.

Dave: but you know most of us How many of us would have the presence of mind to... back away from we'd be like we were just watching the ball and we're probably just thinking oh it's It's coming to me. It's foul.

Dave: You know, a lot a lot of people would have. Probably done the same thing he did.

Phil Gordon: Oh, I think so. and you know I don't think he would have. you know had he been able to watch this in slow motion, he probably wouldn't have wanted to interfere with Moise Alou.

Dave: Of course not.

Phil Gordon: ah you know, could ah could have caught the ball.

Dave: over. Okay.

Phil Gordon: Alou went nuts after that.

Dave: right

Phil Gordon: It was... so it was a Crazy, crazy play.

Dave: yeah yeah

Phil Gordon: But...

Dave: Now, Moises Alou, because he played with the Mets briefly, too. Moises Alou was... was a was a Very good hitter. I mean... I think he had a number of injuries.

Phil Gordon: Oh yeah.

Dave: he would probably have been a hall of famer but he was just And I remember watching him play. He's just one of those guys that... You don't even have to know his stats. He just hit the ball hard. You got it? Welcome. So, yeah.

Phil Gordon: Yes, yes, that he did. Uh...

Dave: Okay.

Phil Gordon: Dave, let's move on. We're still in the A's. There was Ruben Amaro. And there was Ruben Amaro Jr. If I'm not mistaken. Reuben Amaro, the dad.

Phil Gordon: I think... Maybe it is the sun, you tell me. I think he's a commentator on MLB. a channel

Dave: That's probably Junior because...

Phil Gordon: That's probably Junior.

Dave: Peter would probably be a about 80 or something now. and

Phil Gordon: Yeah, you're right. ah So Junior had a very interesting commentator on those shows like. ah if you know uh extra innings or you know one of those analysis shows. Very good. and and MLB has many good shows. and He's very, very good. I think he was a general manager after he was a player.

Dave: yeah

Phil Gordon: For the Phillies, maybe?

Dave: I can't. I like you, everyone.

Phil Gordon: I think so. I think the Phillies.

Dave: But I actually, have yeah, you're right, I think it was the Phillies. I have a Rudy Lamar story.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: Oh! Wow.

Dave: I had a...

Phil Gordon: All right.

Dave: friend I have a friend, i took one of my longest friends. not Well, not long, but I mean, you know. No name the longest. and And I remember him saying to me that Ruben Amaro was his cousin. And I was surprised because he was a...

Phil Gordon: ha

Dave: Jewish kid from, you know, Granada Hills in California. And Ruben Morrow is what they thought was Hispanic, you know. and you and and And he mentioned it now and then, but didn't really talk about it much. you you like I was like, and is he really your cousin or not? you know and And he goes, oh no, he's my cousin. And then finally he told me that he had gone to some kind of, this is why I didn't want to talk about it.

Dave: he got He went to some company, some family picnic or something like that. Ruma Nomar was there. So were, I guess, some other Phillies, including Rick Wise. Remember Rick Wise?

Phil Gordon: Sure.

Dave: No hitter.

Phil Gordon: Picture.

Dave: He threw a no hitter and hit two home runs. The same game. Brick was. And ah so they're playing catch. The kids are playing catch with the Phillies. and My friend got into the catcher's position and Rick Wise.

Dave: threw a fastball, hit him right in the nuts. I mean, square in the nuts. He was in pain. And I think he just doesn't like to talk about it anymore. But it was like, you know, you're on top of the world. You're playing catch with major league ballplayers, and all of a sudden you're lying on the ground grabbing your crotch. What's up? Hilarious and then So, soup time.

Phil Gordon: Dave, I'm guessing he was not wearing a cup to a family event.

Dave: I don't think it would have mattered It's easy. It was as hard as that guy could throw.

Phil Gordon: I see.

Dave: I don't know. Maybe my friend said something to him that pissed him off. but There's a lot of pain. By the way, the same friend. is also cousins. With.

Dave: Maurice Gosfield. who played Doberman on... The Phil Silver Show, remember? Sergeant Belko. remember don't

Phil Gordon: Oh, yes.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: Yes, what's that?

Dave: Dilbert, Minnesota.

Phil Gordon: Was that same character, Dave, not on Car 54, Where Are You?

Dave: Uh... You know what? The actor might have been, I don't know if it was the same character, but yeah, it might have been. who Was that you?

Phil Gordon: Not the same character. I met the same actor. You're right.

Dave: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, could have been.

Phil Gordon: They're very good. All right, let's move on ah ah in the A's here, Dave.

Dave: that

Phil Gordon: You remember the great power hitter Tony Armas?

Dave: Oh, sure.

Phil Gordon: I believe with Oakland Athletics.

Dave: got Yep, yep He's a big power guy.

Phil Gordon: ah Tony.

Dave: Go for it.

Phil Gordon: His son, Tony Armas Jr. played major league baseball i recall him i don't recall him having quite the success of his father

Dave: I think that... It's strange to me because when when the son plays a different position than the dad, they're always like... Because Tony Amherst Jr. was a pitcher and Tony Amherst Sr. was an outfielder.

Dave: uh but it always kind of throws me i keep thinking it's an outfielder

Phil Gordon: Yeah. Right. Well, we we saw that with the LMR clan.

Dave: Yeah. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: They were all over the field, yeah. Uh... Dave, let's move to... ah The bees and a great one. Dusty Baker.

Dave: Oh.

Phil Gordon: Dusty Baker, the dad, and his son, Darren Baker, played. I don't quite recall Darren Baker, do you?

Dave: I... I... vaguely remember now is that is that the same son that almost got clobber during the world series remember that where the he was used being a bad boy

Phil Gordon: Wow!

Dave: and the and the

Phil Gordon: Wow. and there were

Dave: Somebody grabbed him.

Phil Gordon: He grows up.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: grows up and plays major league baseball holy moly good recall dave

Dave: think that's I think

Phil Gordon: Who can forget that image?

Dave: I got you.

Phil Gordon: The entire world is watching this guy round third base.

Dave: Oh yeah.

Phil Gordon: A little kid is out there grabbing the bat.

Dave: Maybe he would have been sick. You've been seriously hurt. you would have been seriously hurt. come through here.

Phil Gordon: Yep, and Hannah did. that It happened that he didn't get hurt. Did he just get out of the way? or

Dave: I forgot who the player was. Grab them, I think. and just Yanked him out of the way a plus minute ago. I might put that one up.

Phil Gordon: There you go. Wow. i do who Who doesn't remember that minute? Dave here's one that I remember quite well, Floyd Bannister. was a, uh, pitcher for several teams, but...

Dave: much

Phil Gordon: with the White Sox. ah for many years. It was on... ah Some very good White Sox teams. I believe the 2000 team. that went to the playoffs. ah And his son, Brian Bannister, like you were saying, played a different position. I think Brian Bannister was an outfielder.

Phil Gordon: And if I'm not mistaken, Dave is still working in the White Sox organization. in the minor leagues. He might be a coach in the minor leagues for the White Sox. and a confidant of their manager.

Dave: I do remember Bryan Bannister a little bit, but I don't think he had a very distinguished career. but

Phil Gordon: No.

Dave: But Floyd had...

Phil Gordon: No, he did not.

Dave: Have fun. Mostly the white socks eat. double figures and wins like, you know. seven years in a row. I mean, he was very consistent and very steady. That's good.

Phil Gordon: Oh, he was. Floyd Bannister, big lefty. Very good lefty. And Dave, now we move to a... ah An entire historic family. This is going to warrant some discussion.

Phil Gordon: So we start out. by talking about Gus Bell. Okay, Gus Bell, I believe, was a third baseman.

Dave: I hope so.

Phil Gordon: Am I right about the Cleveland?

Dave: ah Gus Bell, i I know he was with the Reds. for a time um And Gus Bell.

Dave: Right before the before the Mets' first season, you know, Casey Stengel was the manager. And can the...

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: Reporter goes, well, tell us about the team this year, Case. What do you got? And he went around and he described every player that was going to play. And then he comes to the left fielder and he goes in. This is Casey. Starts talking in all these circles about if we get in a good pitching and we're big defenses as good as I think it's going to be. I think in the long run We're going to win a lot of games and really ring the bell. And that's the left fielder's name, Gus Bell.

Phil Gordon: well

Dave: So... ah

Phil Gordon: Casey was a trip, Deb.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: No question.

Dave: I don't know.

Phil Gordon: Nothing funnier than... ah

Dave: People are just blank and go, I don't know what to do. I forgot his name. He just says, I'll just keep talking. It'll come up at some point.

Phil Gordon: Kessie Stangle press conference after the game was must -see TV, Dave. So Gus Bell

Dave: yes

Phil Gordon: He has a son. Buddy Bell. Buddy Bell. Very good player. Third baseman. Possible outfielder at times. Pretty darn good hitter.

Phil Gordon: And then... If you recall this about Buddy Bell, Dave. became a manager and was a very sought -after manager. He was one of those guys, you know, that every winter everybody was saying, oh, we want to sign Buddy Bell as our manager.

Phil Gordon: The White Sox were among those teams. I think he managed the Cleveland. at the Indians at the time. Maybe Anaheim. But he was a very, very sought -after player.

Phil Gordon: ah as a player, but also then as a manager. Now. Buddy Bell. Then he has two sons. who play Major League Baseball as well. David Bell. and mike bell now I don't.

Phil Gordon: recall either of their careers. but certainly Gus Bell and Buddy Bell. Two very good ballplayers.

Dave: So J Bell was not his son. Remember J Bell?

Phil Gordon: I do, but he's not listed here as a song.

Dave: Okay. Yeah, it might have been a different guy, so yeah. Yeah, no, Gus Bell. i yeah I lived in Ohio, and when I moved to Ohio, Gus Bell... had moved on, but he was a big fan favorite there. He was a really good ball player and Buddy Belt was a very good. ah player too. I'm sure he was an all -star probably more than once.

Dave: um but i know

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: I don't remember his song, though. no

Phil Gordon: Dave here's a ah father -son team and the Saunas still playing. So we're talking about the father, Clay Bellinger.

Dave: Okay.

Phil Gordon: And the son is Cody Bellinger.

Dave: Yep.

Phil Gordon: Now, so we all know Cody Bellinger with the Yankees, so formerly with the Cubs. Various teams. Dodgers. What about Clay Bellinger? I don't remember Clay Bellinger.

Dave: I think he was a... Pitcher, pretty sure he spent some time with the Yankees. but I don't know too much about him. but Yeah, he was he was like he was a Yankee.

Phil Gordon: Okay. Well, we were I'm kind of making the cutoff here at players that made and played in the major leagues. Amen. i I went through the list and highlighted.

Phil Gordon: some of the more well -known ones. ah So the next one I want to talk about is a very well. No one won. We're talking about Yogi Berra, Dave.

Dave: I was waiting for that.

Phil Gordon: Yogi Berra. and his son, Dale Barra. Dale Barrett played for Pittsburgh. I think was a shortstop.

Dave: ah Yes sir.

Phil Gordon: And, of course, his dad, Yogi, was a ah great catcher and then a left fielder for the Yankees.

Dave: and just little

Phil Gordon: ah What do you remember about Dale Baradev?

Dave: Well, I I mean If anybody doesn't know Yogi Berra... of the greatest players, really. Baseball.

Phil Gordon: Oh, Hall of Famer.

Dave: catcher's great hitter mvp just great documentary on him There's a really great documentary on it. You've seen that too. A really great documentary.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: and uh Yo, yo, yo We haven't really talked about it, but you know Dolly Parton passed away recently. They're similar to each other. They were very always very positive. We're, we're. uh joked about quite a bit.

Dave: And they were just... ah pretty much good at everything they try. you know i mean uh but unfortunately what i remember about dale barron's he had some drug issues in the 80s when cocaine was kind of the thing in baseball.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: and and And there's a good scene in the documentary about. Yogi dealing with it because you know he played at the time where it's like you know, drugs, and we didn't even care of them when he was playing. So that's what I remember, and they worked that all out. But Dale was an infielder.

Dave: not particularly successful um yeah i'm not much of a hitter but um Ciao. Play the big leagues, you know.

Phil Gordon: And Dave, for those...

Dave: the you know you're You're eligible for your pension.

Phil Gordon: ah

Dave: on day one in the big leagues now. Play a game.

Phil Gordon: Is that so?

Dave: i don't know how much it is But it started, it used to be for like four years before we kicked in.

Phil Gordon: Wow. Wow.

Dave: It works. It's one game and you're in it.

Phil Gordon: And then, you know, in the old days, you had to make 10 years, I think, Dave.

Dave: Well, it was ah it was a sliding scales.

Phil Gordon: a graduated scale.

Dave: but I mean, I think at four years you'd get something, but if you played 10, 15 years, you would get a pretty good one. So, back then and now.

Phil Gordon: But I seem to recall. A lot of teams, you know what a guy was like. maybe in his ninth year or he had played nine years and he was languishing in the minors They'd maybe bring him up in September so he'd qualify for the 10 years.

Dave: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Or sometimes.

Phil Gordon: And you'd see that from time to time.

Dave: not Sometimes you you hear about teams bringing back a player. for the day or something that if he needs a day to get there. I think this movie miss Mr. Mr. 3000.

Dave: I think there was something about that. that he

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: He didn't actually get 3 ,000 hits. because one was thrown out and then he came back and played a little bit more.

Phil Gordon: Gotcha.

Phil Gordon: Dave, we can't get off Yogi Berra because... we We probably have some young listeners. Yogi, as you said. an icon and in the Dolly Parton sort of sense.

Phil Gordon: But what it was about yogi. was It's kind of like Casey Stegall. when he spoke. He tended to say kind of absurd things, right? ah One of the ones they associate with Yogi is they he'd talk about a restaurant and he'd go, it's so popular, nobody goes there anymore.

Phil Gordon: Do you remember any other yogisms?

Dave: Well, one of the famous ones from him was, It Ain't Over Till It's Over.

Phil Gordon: Of course

Dave: which Maybe you're trying somewhere. and uh Um, yeah You know, the thing with Yogi, he's very good friends with the... Joe Reggiolo.

Phil Gordon: That's right.

Dave: player.

Phil Gordon: child I think childhood friends

Dave: We'll be right back. yeah Yeah, they grew up together. I mean, Reggie used to joke, he says, I bu he wasn't even the best catcher on my street. you know. But Gareggio wrote a book, he wrote Baseball is a Funny Game. For me, that was a...

Dave: big book where i saw i learned a lot about baseball and that a lot about humor And. he and he was a commentator and he was often on Talk shows. Kind of bob like Bob Bucher in a way.

Dave: uh not like that

Phil Gordon: Yes, very much so.

Dave: he A lot of people say like Joe Garagiola, oh he he created Yogi Berra because he kind of made... you know. the yogi character come come alive and There's, you know...

Dave: I don't know the percentages, but they're always probably a very small percentage of things attributed to Yogi. he actually said but if it sounded like yogi they'd say yogi said it

Phil Gordon: Very good. Dave, um I think let's... let's End this discussion for now. At the bearer of father and son. ah But you mentioned Joe Garagiola, and I think this is an appropriate place to stop this for now. We'll pick this up in a future episode for sure.

Dave: a lot of them

Phil Gordon: but Joe Garagiola's son. Joe Garagiola Jr. is the play -by -play man for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dave: Was it a general manager?

Phil Gordon: And very good. Gives a great call on the games. has been for quite a few years.

Dave: What's your name?

Phil Gordon: And if I'm not mistaken, Dave.

Dave: What's up?

Phil Gordon: ah Joe Garagiola, the father, who's no longer living. was a part owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dave: That scene kind of rings a bell, yeah. Was a junior general manager for a while?

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: Timebacks.

Phil Gordon: He might have been. He might have been, but now he's the broadcaster.

Dave: I thought he was a fellow on the special.

Phil Gordon: ah Give him a listen. He does a very good call in the game.

Dave: yeah right

Phil Gordon: It's a good, nice team that the Diamondbacks have. So there you go. We'll we'll pick it up. ah Next time, and Dave, let's... throw this little teaser out for our...

Phil Gordon: MacFans. ah We will pick it up at the bees. With the dad. Dante Bichette? And his son? Ba 'u b'shet!

Dave: Okay, that'll be good.

Phil Gordon: So... Write that down on your calendar. for Laughing Liberally Arizona. Dave, before we switch subjects. I know that you've got a ah brand new piece that we're going to introduce to Laughing Liberally.

Dave: Oh yes sir, yes sir. I may.

Phil Gordon: Arizona.

Dave: Here Phil, as as you know, i'm I'm an expert on the Bible. and

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: studied religion and the Bible. wasn't you know, I guess what's the study of. The but guess bibliography. uh and And so I just want to say something here. Because I like to keep people up to date. Maybe we'll do this and make this the...

Dave: We're calling it Yaz, our show, you know. The Yaz. Bible Minute.

Phil Gordon: Yes, Dave, before you before you begin the Bible Minute.

Dave: So.

Phil Gordon: I want to say for our future Bible Minutes, you're welcome to borrow the hat.

Dave: Hello. I love that. Yeah.

Phil Gordon: ah we should We're not in the same location, so we'll have to exchange it. I'll bring it to Portillo's.

Dave: Okay, sir.

Phil Gordon: ah in its pope case. And Dave, while you're doing the Bible a Minute... I have been informed, special surprise for our audience. one of our favorite visitors.

Phil Gordon: to laughing liberally.

Dave: oh yeah

Phil Gordon: to ITO. I don't know that... he appeared ever at the ah live show at Tim because, Dave, frankly, we thought he was dead.

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: But coming back...

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: From... apparently not being dead and joining us today.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: Maybe one of the great actors. ah Certainly out of England and Scotland. of all time. and Everybody's favorite James Bond, Dave. Sir Sean Connery.

Phil Gordon: will be joining us.

Dave: I don't feel.

Phil Gordon: I'm going to go. His limo is pulling up right now.

Dave: No, we're filming you.

Phil Gordon: I'm going to go assist him. while you do the Bible Minute.

Dave: Okay, when you when you told me we were gonna have Sean Connery on i

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: Isn't Sean Connery dead? And I looked it up and he died on Halloween of 2020, the COVID year. I know where he died from. He was very old by then. And i go I go, well, I don't know what Phil's talking about because the guy's been dead for for six years.

Dave: So... we got a question to ask what happened

Phil Gordon: I think we're going to have to ask him about that, Dave.

Dave: Okay, right.

Phil Gordon: And if I know sure Sir Sean, he'll have an answer for us.

Dave: Oh, I'm sure he will. yeah So.

Phil Gordon: All right.

Dave: Okay.

Phil Gordon: Enjoy the Bible Minute.

Dave: the final minute i really got to minute It's a Bible minute, so get going.

Phil Gordon: We'll be right back.

Phil Gordon: All right.

Dave: We got a minute. that but right

Phil Gordon: Bless you, Laughing Liberally audience!

Dave: I love you. yeah a england this Anyway. As I mentioned, I'm an expert in the Bible and religion, and I like to keep up on the bibliography, which is what the study of the Bible is called.

Dave: And they recently discovered... an ancient artifact, ancient text of the Bible, and they think it's genuine. and uh

Dave: It's got a ah different version of the of the flood story. In this one, Uh... Noah, he built the ark along with his um um his family.

Dave: and And then he walks out and he raises his hands to the heavens and he goes... My Lord, I have completed. the construction of the ark. as you have directed me.

Dave: And, you know, his sons are behind him going, oh, I did it. Yeah, I did it. We're not getting any credit for this at all. And so ah God goes, you completed the ark. He said. You thought I was serious?

Dave: You dumbass! And I know it's like, like you know what are you talking about? he says so lord do you do you know how far i went to get a duckbill platypus and not let alone two And God goes, well, it's going to be easier now. because you've got a boat.

Dave: He called over St. Peter and says, you know. We've been hearing from Nigerian princes recently, Noah. And so anyway, and Noah was humiliated in this version of it. But at the end, though, God says be a good sport.

Dave: Hand comes down from heaven. Noah reaches up to shake it, you know. and So that's the that's the latest version of the... of the Bibles. Noah and the Ark story.

Dave: Mr. Connery? Is that you?

Phil Gordon: Ash! Dave!

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: I was just chatting with Phil, who's brought me in.

Dave: great to see Great to see you again. So you...

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: We were just talking.

Phil Gordon: It gave... I don't know if you noticed my cap. But if you don't mind, I'll... be referred to as Commander Bond.

Dave: I'm having a little trouble hearing you. I don't know why, because you sit where Phil usually sits.

Phil Gordon: I...

Dave: No joke.

Phil Gordon: Is that any better, sir?

Dave: Thank you.

Phil Gordon: How's that?

Dave: That's all. that's what Yep.

Phil Gordon: Ah, very good, very good.

Dave: So we were we were just talking.

Phil Gordon: I think they've got these headphones.

Dave: uh before we brought you out that you know i looked it up It said you died in October of 2020.

Phil Gordon: ah

Dave: You're here today. What happened?

Phil Gordon: well I'm chuckling, Dave. You know, uh... You... Might recall we tried this trick once before in You Only Live Twice, Dave.

Dave: right

Phil Gordon: when they faked Commander Bond's death. And of course, she returns later to save the world. Welp. A bit of the same thing might be happening again, Dave.

Phil Gordon: No, that was a fake funeral for me.

Dave: I was.

Phil Gordon: Ash, I wanted to go a little bit underground, you know. Actually, ah the reason I was available is i'm I'm right here. right here in arizona dave i'm down in green valley

Dave: Now, what do you... what do you what are you What are you up to these days?

Phil Gordon: Yes. Show I'm down in Green Valley. ah And... The reason I'm in Green Valley, Dave, is... I don't mind talking about it. The love of my life, Dave.

Phil Gordon: Ah, the lovely, the beautiful, the talented Ursula Andrus, Dave.

Dave: Mmm, yep. beauty.

Phil Gordon: Yes, it's been a lifelong love affair of ours, and Ursula had some... ah health issues. and lives in the Golden Slumbers nursing home, Dave, in Green Valley.

Phil Gordon: I don't know if you're familiar with it. I know you sell real estate. Perhaps you've sold some property at Golden Schlumpers.

Dave: Well... Well... Mr. Connery, just for our...

Phil Gordon: Yes, sir. Sir.

Dave: you know you Viewers, Sir Connery, sorry about that. Our viewers who may not be familiar with Arizona, Green Valley is a very large A town south of here, it is pretty much inhabited by elderly people, senior citizens and the like.

Dave: A lot of retired people go down there. Beautiful place. It's a beautiful place to live in.

Phil Gordon: And it's not Scotland, Dave.

Dave: if you want. If you'd like to buy a host in Green Valley, just you know check in with me. Leave it in the comments, and I'll set you up.

Phil Gordon: Yes. ah Well, if you're done with your commercial, Dave. I'll move on. Certainly Green Valley is no Scotland, but Edinburgh, any of the places where I normally hung out.

Phil Gordon: But with Ursula... uh needing a little more attention uh she's doing well I wanted to be near her and help. Cow for her.

Phil Gordon: So i I'm down in Green Valley. I spent time with her so that I didn't want the whole. paparazzi and all that. So I faked my death.

Dave: That's it.

Phil Gordon: So they'd leave us alone.

Dave: okay

Phil Gordon: Let us take our daily walk. You know, we we will have a nice glass of Ensure. and talk about old times. She's doing great, Ursula.

Dave: Melt up.

Phil Gordon: Remember her, Dave? Of course, in... ah uh thunderball i believe it was

Dave: I thought it was Dr. No. but

Phil Gordon: Dr.

Dave: shit

Phil Gordon: No, yes.

Dave: She comes out of the ocean.

Phil Gordon: You're right about that. You're up on your bond history, Dave. Yes, Dr.

Dave: That's right.

Phil Gordon: Noor, I met her on the beach, Dave.

Dave: That's how you go.

Phil Gordon: And you remember Ursula in that bikini. I'm sure you do.

Dave: what which one

Phil Gordon: Ursula in that bikini.

Dave: Oh, that classic, yes, that was up there. In the 60s that one of the classic pinups like Raquel Welch in her

Phil Gordon: ash

Dave: 10 ,000 years BC. uh Make bikini she had on Yeah, but that's a very famous shot. Folks, if you're young or you haven't, go Google Urs Landris.

Phil Gordon: yes

Dave: That'll be the picture that'll come up for sure.

Phil Gordon: And, you know, I don't know if you remember the film well, Dave, but a scene that Ursula. And I will recreate in her room. is when she got stung by a stingray.

Phil Gordon: And I sucked out the poison, Dave.

Dave: have

Phil Gordon: and we'll do that we'll pretend and you know i'll suck out the poison you know sort of We'll have a glass of Ensure and laugh about it.

Dave: Yeah, that's ah that's good because you know today the recommended treatment is to to urinate on it. I don't think that would have gone over too well. in the Bond movie.

Phil Gordon: No, but it wouldn't be the first woman I've urinated on, Dave.

Dave: but

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: okay Okay, let's move on.

Phil Gordon: Hey. They get a little wild out there. and apparently Apparently, you don't remember the 60s in London, Dave.

Dave: Go out of here.

Dave: well you know They say if you remember the 60s, you weren't there. So... I mean, what about, you know, I always think...

Phil Gordon: That's true.

Dave: I always think about you because of your background as James Bond as being like very much into foreign intrigue and, you know, nations doing things.

Phil Gordon: Elish.

Phil Gordon: Dad. Yes.

Dave: scream but What do you think about what's going on in Iran and and the the straight -up Hormuz right now?

Phil Gordon: Well Dave, you're a very good detective. You've uncovered a little plan I've got cooking.

Dave: oh okay are you are you fruit Are you free to speak about it?

Phil Gordon: Yes, the reason I've got my... yeah

Dave: Yep.

Phil Gordon: I'm thinking about it, Dave. I've got a plan. I'd like to share it with you and Phil here if I could.

Dave: huh

Phil Gordon: ah You know... That's why I have my shaler cap on, Dave. I'm about to... Head off! To the Straits of Hormuz, Dave.

Phil Gordon: I'll be shaming them. To meet up with... A Russian submarine.

Dave: oh

Phil Gordon: Perhaps your listeners are familiar with the Red October. and maybe the film that I made. Hunt for Red October.

Dave: Great movie.

Phil Gordon: Yes!

Dave: Great cast.

Phil Gordon: Well, if you're... Quite familiar with the film We're going to recreate that plot, Dave. You know, I'm no fan of Donald Trump. Let me show you that right now. these are he's a big fat bloated bloke

Dave: but

Phil Gordon: ah We don't care much for him in Europe. But... He did send out a call, if you heard him last week. for allies to join in his fight against Iran.

Dave: Okay.

Phil Gordon: And I think particularly he was ah mentioning this to our Canadian brothers. And he chastised them when they refused to part participate. Well.

Phil Gordon: I thought you knew I've had such a relationship with America, with the CIA. It's time for Commander Bond to help out to the situation, Dave. So here's what I'm going to do.

Phil Gordon: I'm going to take a casual sail over to the Straits of Hormuz. Engage with the Russians. who, you know, are helping the Iranians. They may not admit that, but my sources tell me that's so.

Phil Gordon: I'm going to offer, Dave. To command the Red October once again.

Dave: okay

Phil Gordon: and shale the Red October directly into the belly of the Strait of Hormuz, Dave.

Phil Gordon: At that time. Once we're close by, certainly the Americans will... Get that dander up. And they'll be looking to take out the Red October.

Phil Gordon: Well... If you recall the hunt for Red October, Dave, and you can picture that scene. Remember a young Alec Baldwin.

Dave: Mmm, that's sour.

Phil Gordon: was a CIA agent.

Dave: yeah

Phil Gordon: I told him to sit down. And of course... In the proceedings, Sam Neill handed me a pistol. Let's just say, thank God he didn't give the pistol to Alec Baldwin. None of us would be here today.

Dave: Yeah, true. Hmm.

Phil Gordon: Anyways, as good fortune you would have it, Dave. I will sail the red October. under the guise that I'm helping the Russians to attack the Americans.

Phil Gordon: I will. Go below deck. Take this. Dub Marine for a plunge. and start heading directly. at the American submarine.

Phil Gordon: Like we did with Red October, only that time at the Russian stave.

Phil Gordon: Well, when they tried to knock us out... We will fake A nuclear leak, Dave. And then as I tested The Russians back then, they don't want to get... near the submarine that's leaking radiation.

Phil Gordon: Should I fire a missile? But Commander Bond will get so close. that they can't engage the missile dev. You remember the great scene in Hunt for Red October.

Phil Gordon: Well... We'll engage and I'll tell. some young officer to Take a seat and steal the ship. You remember the tension building in that scene, Dave?

Dave: Oh, it was a hill.

Phil Gordon: and I told Alec Baldwin.

Dave: and quietr yeah

Phil Gordon: We need more speed! And he said, you're already going 110. And I said, do you remember what I said, Dave? I should take it to 115 then.

Phil Gordon: and Baldwin did as I said. And we headed right to the missile. And they shot the missile and the missile went over the submarine. because they couldn't reprogram it because I'd gotten so close.

Dave: ah

Phil Gordon: And then, Dave, when we get close.

Dave: flat

Phil Gordon: To the American submarine, I will take the microphone. And I will say as I did on the Red October. This is Captain Marcus Aurelius.

Phil Gordon: Requesting... Ashilem. For my shelf. and my crew. And then the Americans will have control of the Red October. And then we'll hit the Iranians right in the nut stave.

Dave: I was wondering what...

Phil Gordon: that I will sail back to Green Valley. I will hold Ursula Andress's hand. I will suck the poison out of her leg. and we will have a nice glass.

Dave: ah

Phil Gordon: of Metro -Cal, Dave.

Dave: metric tells great well

Phil Gordon: Any questions?

Dave: I... I hope that works. That sounds like a very exciting plan. and that would be ah some good news you know I mean look the Trump has declared the war over about six or seven times now, but maybe we ought to really end it.

Phil Gordon: Ash!

Dave: Yep.

Phil Gordon: Well, he's an idiot, Dave. What can I say?

Dave: the

Phil Gordon: That's why I'm coming to help.

Dave: I got a little soup.

Phil Gordon: And, uh...

Dave: Mr. Notch, sir, I'm a little surprised that you were... your hostility towards trump because you know he, like Bond, Very much a ladies' man.

Phil Gordon: Well, we we do share that, Dave, but... You know, there are many that fancy themselves ladies' men that ah really are doing it to overcompensate in some other area.

Phil Gordon: ah That's obvious in Trump's case. But we're going to help the Americans out this time. Like they helped me out in Live and Let Die, if you remember that event.

Phil Gordon: ah So.

Dave: not sure

Phil Gordon: ah Yes, of course. So I'm happy to help. I've got to get back now to Green Valley, Dave. it show

Dave: sir

Phil Gordon: It's almost three o 'clock, which is dinner time at Golden Slobbers.

Dave: You better hurry.

Phil Gordon: And I don't want to miss. I think they're having mutton today.

Dave: buttons.

Phil Gordon: Yes, at my request, Dave.

Dave: but

Phil Gordon: George, good to see you and Phil, who show in the room.

Dave: Great seeing you, sir.

Phil Gordon: Yes, I say.

Dave: you were you were

Phil Gordon: Shaloochoo! Watch out! Media, watch your newspapers and see if, uh... There isn't a little scuffle down in the Straits of Hormuz, Steph.

Dave: and know Thank you for stopping by. We're glad you're alive.

Phil Gordon: Shining off.

Dave: And you are...

Phil Gordon: Oh!

Dave: Without question, you were the greatest Bond.

Phil Gordon: Ha ha!

Dave: I mean, no one else compares.

Phil Gordon: Yes, I also like the golf courses down in Green Valley, Dave.

Dave: i

Dave: talk back then Okay, great.

Phil Gordon: Signing off.

Dave: so Well, thank you. affection

Phil Gordon: We'll see you soon.

Dave: Yes, okay.

Phil Gordon: I'll bring Flo back.

Dave: Ron Connery, everybody. He was the greatest to James Bond. i don't think there's any argument about that. he Created the character although there was an earlier

Phil Gordon: Alright, thank you, sir. Connery.

Dave: Phil, you know, there was a...

Phil Gordon: Dave, the surrogate is already.

Dave: Peaceful work. Peace.

Phil Gordon: Back in the limo.

Dave: but before before uh

Phil Gordon: He is back in the limo and on his way. That was fascinating.

Dave: Yeah, before I was just trying to fill here and I was saying I believe Connery was the first James Bond, except there was an earlier version. Casino Royale I think with It might have been David Niven.

Dave: Doing bond earlier. Do you remember anything about that?

Phil Gordon: Oh, I remember reading about it. I i do not remember the film.

Dave: what but Connery by far the greatest James Bond. I mean, he established the character.

Phil Gordon: Oh, the greatest James Bond.

Dave: And frankly, it bothers me You know, I like James Bond movies, but it bothers me. that they had to You know, I mean He was not a sexual predator, but I mean... ah Women were kind of used as props in those movies and lately then they started to have more, you know agency and that but You know, those early movies, I mean, he was all about... to Charming the ladies, lighting their cigarettes. and All that stuff. so Now they've softened.

Phil Gordon: He was, well.

Dave: Quite a bit, yeah.

Phil Gordon: um ah Well, Sir Connery mentioning Ursula Andrus, she was the first of the...

Dave: That was good.

Phil Gordon: long line of Bond girls.

Dave: And the Bond girls are, yeah. notorious for being Really. beautiful women so it's like oh she's a if you If you're a Bond girl, it's going to be the first line of your obituary. because it was that big of a deal.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Phil Gordon: Dave. ah It's time to wrap up, I think. But I wanted to...

Dave: We have about five minutes. Let me see if I have something.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: under' killed Oh, I'm talking about something, Phil, here. yeah you feel You're familiar with Cameo?

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Phil Gordon: Cameo, ah like a a service that does like... Commercials and things?

Dave: Cameo does I think what they offer is like celebrities who will leave your answering machine message or they'll maybe they'll hire you. Call you when you're broke.

Phil Gordon: Yes. Yes. That's what I mean. Yeah.

Dave: like that And one of the...

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: celebrities that they're offering is Chris Hansen

Phil Gordon: Oh!

Dave: of of To Catch a Predator.

Phil Gordon: Catch a predator.

Dave: And... Personally... I don't want to hear that Chris Hansen's on the phone for me. you know It would make me nervous. It's like, hey. I mean...

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: And she sounded 19, you know. Of course, I got to move. I appreciate it.

Phil Gordon: yeah I don't know. I don't know if you hear that, but

Dave: good

Phil Gordon: Do you hear that?

Phil Gordon: the The sound of like sonar.

Dave: no

Phil Gordon: No. I was just wondering if Sir Connery had walked out with his microphone on. Maybe he's already on the submarine. All right.

Dave: I don't know about that. but Yeah, anyway, so don't, Phil, if you're going to surprise me on my birthday.

Phil Gordon: Uh... Well, very good Dave.

Dave: i don't I don't want a phone call from Chris Hansen. It would definitely spook me, freak me out. So.

Phil Gordon: All right, then I've got to start shopping again, Dave.

Dave: You were going to bring it up.

Phil Gordon: um Maybe I hope.

Dave: you know that i mean but You know what it does?

Phil Gordon: I hope I did.

Dave: They got people on there I've never heard of. And and it's like, oh, they'll make a call for 10 bucks. you know It's like somebody who's on a sitcom 30 years ago and they haven't worked much since. It's like, oh, I'll call them up.

Phil Gordon: is In case I can't get a refund on that, Dave, is there anyone else you would like a call from?

Dave: you're good

Dave: No.

Phil Gordon: Okay.

Dave: No, that's not what I'm expecting.

Phil Gordon: I wonder if... ah Sean Connery is doing those.

Dave: Well, I mean it would be... a good market for him or anyone who imitates him. If you know anybody like that.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: that Get some money out.

Phil Gordon: Yeah.

Dave: So...

Phil Gordon: Dave, you, uh... You and I were chatting before we began the show. ah yeah about artificial intelligence.

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: Why don't you share with the audience what you were talking about?

Dave: Well, I mean We don't have enough time.

Phil Gordon: Okay.

Dave: but But yeah, let's take that up another time because a few things.

Phil Gordon: Alright.

Dave: Not bad at all.

Phil Gordon: A little teaser then.

Dave: But the other thing I just want to say, we have a little time to to take care of here. We do grieve over the loss of Dolly Parton. It was. As we said earlier, just one of those people who was.

Dave: you know a ray of sunshine extremely talented.

Phil Gordon: That she was.

Dave: I was, as you know, a country disc jockey in the the late 70s. And.

Phil Gordon: Excuse me.

Dave: I walked into the studio the first day. This is in Bakersfield. And there's a sign on the wall that says, jocks. No jokes about Dolly's jokes. here they were starting to understand you shouldn't objectify her but you know didn' that way it But um...

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: Played a lot of Dobbins.

Phil Gordon: Well, there was certainly no joke there.

Dave: Quite a lot of Dolly's records. I saw her perform.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: it was And she was just like Yogi. you couldn't find anybody. anywhere to say anything bad about Dolly Parton. She was. just a great force i mean Just...

Dave: lovely talented charming great sense of humor and very very generous with her money and did a lot for i think some things are just coming out now that people are finding out that she she contributed to education, things like that. Just so a wonderful woman. and she will Absolutely be with us.

Phil Gordon: That she was, Dave. what What were some of your favorite songs of Dolly's?

Dave: Well, Jolene, of course, is a great song. She did a song called Well, yeah you know, the song I Will Always Love You became a classic for her and then for Whitney Houston later.

Phil Gordon: Right?

Dave: like that And. It's interesting, a friend of mine was saying that around 1978 she came out with an album that had a lot of... He's a destroyer.

Dave: So a lot of country arts will move a kind of disco sound into there. records and the owner of the station well not the owner Of course, I'm running the station. didn't want to add it as a song.

Dave: He didn't think it was fitting for country music. You know. if we didn't if we didn't If we didn't play it, people would be listening to other stations that played it.

Phil Gordon: And she was actually, I thought, a very talented actress.

Dave: Let's...

Phil Gordon: I remember 9 to 5 with ah Jane Fonda. and ah Who was the other actress?

Dave: We'll leave. Let me tell them.

Phil Gordon: Lily Tomlin. Very good, Dave. That was actually a very fine movie.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: I've but put it on a little dolly in the background here.

Dave: I hear that, yeah.

Phil Gordon: She was really something. You know, I don't know that I was... Quite so familiar with her. and um charitable work. especially in the literacy area.

Dave: Yeah.

Phil Gordon: And that was all over the world.

Dave: very much

Dave: I don't know if you read the story.

Phil Gordon: Well, Davis, we

Dave: i bought this I thought there was a great story that kind of summed up Dolly. She was in a movie really bad movie with Sylvester Stallone. rhinestone. And they were off the set. They were like walking down the street and there was a homeless guy.

Dave: And she went over and I don't know what she did. Maybe she put a blanket on him or she did something. terrible towards him. So let's just launch off the side of buttering. He should have made something of his life.

Dave: And she turned to someone and she's like, you son of a bitch. That could be you. The face of the earth. That could be you. and it's definitely hum i mean she She was, but she's still, you know, she didn't.

Phil Gordon: Yes.

Dave: wasn't mean or shouldn't hate him. It was just like, you know. Appreciate what you have, man, you know.

Phil Gordon: Right. and And as we've all watched Sylvester Stallone's acting career, David, could easily have been him.

Dave: right

Phil Gordon: Dave, I think on that note. It's time to say goodbye. I want to thank our viewers and listeners for tuning in to Laughing Liberally, Arizona. A little plea, if I could, before we go.

Dave: Yes.

Phil Gordon: Would you go to Apple Podcasts? Would you rate and review our show? We'd really appreciate it. We love constructive criticism also. So please. Tell your friends about it.

Phil Gordon: It'll really help us. Get more listeners and also get some sponsorship, which we're very close to, Dave.

Dave: I know Craycroft is.

Phil Gordon: And Dave.

Dave: Take off from the street.

Phil Gordon: and In the words of Dolly Parton,

Dave: What's that?

Phil Gordon: I will always love you.

Dave: Okay. Right back at you, buddy.

Phil Gordon: Like... Thank you very much, folks, for listening. You're tuned to Laughing Liberally Arizona. We'll see you next time.
