Paisans, drumroll please. Welcome to the inaugural Team of the Season Serie A, presented by Kautchou Culture.
00:00:15
Speaker
That was a great introduction there, Logs. This is the Calcio Culture team of the season. um Before we kind of break down the players in the formation, we did have the we wanted to let you guys know the parameters of which we graded these. um And I will say I drove the bus on the parameters. You drove something.
00:00:36
Speaker
What it was was... ah um role in the team. So the importance of the role in his team. um That was next, obviously, the importance of the or the importance of the player in the team and then the outcome of the team of which that a player played into.
00:00:53
Speaker
Then we also took into account statistics And then lastly, we were not aiming for specific or positions for each player. It was the best 11 and trying to create a formation out off of that best 11.
00:01:09
Speaker
Anything? Yeah, I think boys i think it's important that we that we define that because as like team of the seasons have been coming out, we've seen them all. For the most part, I think a lot of people have gotten them wrong.
00:01:20
Speaker
And we really wanted to get away from just giving it to everybody that had the most goals and assists is is ah is essentially my biggest complaint about a lot of the teams I've seen. i also think that there was just bad selections a lot of the time.
00:01:32
Speaker
And like, just because a team finished high, like doesn't necessarily mean like players need to be in, although it is taken into account. Because there are players, I think there are some Juve players on the defensive side of things that got into a lot of defense or a lot of team of the seasons who I don't think should have been there. um Particularly, like I saw Savona on a couple of team of the seasons, which I did not love. Made sense.
00:01:52
Speaker
Made no sense. um So that's why we got we got to set the parameters a little bit. ah But just to give you a little bit of idea what we're playing with here. We went 3-4-3.
00:02:04
Speaker
lot of defenders in the team, very Italian. But again, we tried to pick the best 11 players of the season. And for us, this was them. And we kind of had to move some players around the field to make it work. But again, we think this is the best 11 players that deserve to be in this team at the end of the day.
00:02:22
Speaker
And to start with, goalkeepers and probably the most contentious decision amongst the Calcio boys. And I'm to hand it on to Logs to officially announce our goalkeeper of the season.
00:02:34
Speaker
And without further ado, the cultural culture, which was a unanimous decision fully of the year...
00:02:43
Speaker
None other than Vanya Malinkovic-Savage of Torino. Vanya, the GOAT in the net this year. Career high, 129 saves at a 77.5% save possession clip.
00:02:58
Speaker
Most saves in the league and second highest save percentage. Highest post-shot XG in the league. There's not much more that you can save for this guy other than that he was absolutely snubbed by the league and not and was not awarded.
00:03:11
Speaker
goalie of the year and forever now that award is known as trash. So welcome to the team of the season Vanya. Well done this season. You are the reason that Torino was in 12th and not relegated.
00:03:25
Speaker
I, this is not unanimous. Logan went out and spoke for me, which is not true. I had a big, I listen, I think he had a great season. I'm also going to say this now. I'm not going to say his name because I don't agree with the pick.
00:03:38
Speaker
I also want to make this quick because I don't want to waste my breath on this. He had a good season. I'm not saying he didn't. I think that Spilar should be in this position. From Roma. From Roma. From Roma.
00:03:50
Speaker
He had better saves. um he He had bigger saves in bigger games. The team finished better. They went on 18-game on B-in streak, and he had a huge factor in that.
00:04:00
Speaker
um And ah the list goes on. I don't want to don't want to drag it on, but I am heavily against this, and that's all.
00:04:09
Speaker
Yeah, this one was very contentious. um When we put up a graphic, there's definitely going to be an asterisk at the bottom that Mott does not agree with it. Because i think it's I think it's a real discussion, right? like When we were talking about this, i I think there's a strong case for either one of them. um I fall on the Vanya side, I will say.
00:04:27
Speaker
so And for me, I think goalkeeping is the one position that is extremely statistical driven. And I think that second highest save percentage on most shots faced in the league and then highest post shot XG, which is essentially how many goals you have stolen from the other team.
00:04:44
Speaker
Easiest way I can say it for me. That's the best goalie made, made the most. Save the most goals, first team. I think it has to go to that. But I'll stop there. like that That's kind of it. There's a factor that needs to go in that obviously he's going to save more goals because he's going to be shot on more because the team is worse.
00:05:02
Speaker
So he has more shots to save. So then I think there's a factor that needs to be played into it where the games that they're in and the saves that they're making to get the points that they get to then...
00:05:14
Speaker
finished where they finished in the season for me and for the Serie A, which I do agree with Logue's in the fact that, listen, the Serie A doesn't they don't get a lot right. We all know that. We've been dogging them all year long.
00:05:25
Speaker
um So then I'm not saying they're right. Like Sfilar being goalkeeper of the year, like they make mistakes. Obviously, I just agree with this decision that they made. He was my goalie of the year, um but not these two. So I got outvoted clearly.
00:05:40
Speaker
Yes, you did get outvoted, but that brings us into our back line again, three, four, three. So we had three center backs in here. And the reason that we did this is we did feel like there were some very, very dominant center backs this year that absolutely deserve to be in the team.
00:05:52
Speaker
So we actually took out a midfielder spot. Normally you see a four, three, three. um And we just felt that there was a better case to be made for some of the defenders. So our starting right center back, anybody want to announce it? Am I announcing it?
00:06:04
Speaker
It's your boy. Amir Rahmani. from Napoli. um This one for us made a lot of sense. We had kind of said this halfway through the season. He was our pick and he kind of got snubbed in a lot of teams that we've seen um for us. He started all 38 games for Napoli, 3,406 minutes total, um most minutes, most starts for the team. And we just felt it made sense.
00:06:28
Speaker
The core of the best defense in Europe should absolutely be in this team. And that's why he's here for us. Simply played every single minute this season and they gave up the least amount of goals.
00:06:39
Speaker
It only makes sense. He had a partner switch out almost every game and given the fact that Bongiorno was in and out of the lineup. But Rachmani was there every single game, every single week.
00:06:51
Speaker
ah Definitely needs to be in this squad ah hell of a season from him. And ah good to see that he might be in the running for another award from Couchel Culture and that he might be the most improved season over season.
00:07:03
Speaker
I don't know about most improved. heat Once again, like Kim got all the love in their Scudetto winning season two years ago, but Rachmani was once again a pillar. He's proven that they they keep bringing in signings next to him that get all the headlines. Bongiorno this year, although he was in and out and Rachmani has been the guy game in and game in that they can rely on. Rachmani, first center back, his partner, center, center back. um This one was also an easy one for us. We had to figure out where to put him in the team, but was probably the best defender in Serie A. Serie A gave him best defender, is going to finish most likely top 10 for Ballon d'Or, which is just goes to show how good of a season he had.
00:07:41
Speaker
And that's Alessandro Bastoni um from Inter Milan, left center back, um truly established as a tight end of this league. I think that's his back-to-back defender of the year ah for him. And it's just one of those guys. If you don't know who he is you have not been watching Italian soccer.
00:07:56
Speaker
He is an absolute Ferrari and is definitely in the conversation of best center back in world football year in a year out now.
00:08:04
Speaker
Bastoni will be in the team this season for years to come. It's not a surprise to anybody. This guy is an absolute titan in the back and one of the most progressive centerbacks in the world, if not the most progressive. You're starting to see a lot of other centerbacks, especially in the back three, mold their game after a player like Bastoni. And he's certainly at the forefront of that movement.
00:08:25
Speaker
So if there's anybody in this team that fully deserves to be in it after some of the other guys that are from the Scudetto winners, it's certainly Bastoni. Yeah, couldn't agree more. Bastoni, as long as he's in this league and is healthy, he will be probably the first guy written down on this on this team this season every single year. um Really just great player on the ball, defending in the air, going forward. There's no holes in his game.
00:08:56
Speaker
ah And yeah, he's great player. Then we'll just answer our last spot. Left center back might be a surprise for some people, but I'm going to give you this one, Mots, because this was a guy that you pulled out a lot this season. Yep. i we you Third center back here is going to be Indica.
00:09:11
Speaker
He played every single minute for a team that went on an 18-game unbeaten run. um Started off the season in 17th place and finished in 5th.
00:09:22
Speaker
barely missed the Champions League was another key pillar in that run. um So I felt that one of those two people in Sfilar or Indica had to be on this team.
00:09:34
Speaker
So because Sfilar wasn't, we switched the formation to a three-back so we can get Indica and a Roma player in there. um Also, it's very solid defense, only allowing 35 goals. They had the most or the second most clean sheets, which to me is a defensive stat over a goalie stat.
00:09:51
Speaker
And he, for me, had to be on this team. Yeah, every minute of every game played, he was there at the start where it wasn't good and then was a core piece of why they're as good as they are.
00:10:02
Speaker
um And i I think it's a really kind of stark contrast to Bastoni, who is more of like a flashy center back. In Dika, you don't really notice him all that well all that much because he just gets the job done every time. He never gets beaten. He never loses the ball. He just does everything right. And you can be 100% dependent on him 100% of the time, which is why he played every single game for this Roma team.
00:10:24
Speaker
And every minute, not even every game, he played every single minute. Insane. Yeah, happy to see Indica have a season like he did, especially coming off the back of last season where he was a big signing in from the Bundesliga. It came from Frankfurt.
00:10:37
Speaker
Romo was very, very high on this guy and had just a very okay season in his first year in Serie A. This year, 100% better. ah Unbelievable showing from him, especially playing in a couple of different positions on that back line and especially how bad Mancini was at some points this season. It was good to see that at least one of them in that back three was able to perform on a consistent basis. So shout out to ah our only Roma player.
00:11:02
Speaker
Oh yeah, Trivia's our only run player. Alright, kicking it on. Wingback positions. We got two of them. um This is one of the ones where we we had to take a guy out of position. This was a really deep group actually this year and there was a lot of wingbacks who who were in our conversation.
00:11:15
Speaker
um But to kick it off on the right side of the field, i one of my favorite players in league, probably my favorite player in world football right now, I had to go to Atalanta, Raul Belanova. He's a guy picked out at the beginning of the year.
00:11:25
Speaker
On my Twitter, I did a write-up on some of my favorite players from the season. He made that group. um He was finished the season on nine assists, had the most assists in the league or most assists in the league amongst ah the wingback group, was a utility man for the team um at times playing as a right center back, just did a lot up and down the field. um And I think ah when we go through the the other wingbacks that were in the discussion and the ah ah the other one who did make the team, he's probably the best defensively, was able to play as a right center back in pocket. Rafael Leal a couple at at least one time this year.
00:11:55
Speaker
Um, and then just covered an insane amount of ground up and down the field off the right. I think he absolutely deserves to be in this team. And it's just an exciting young Italian who is probably going to be in the running for this team for, for years to come.
00:12:10
Speaker
Definitely a bright spot for this Atalanta squad who was up and down all season, but this one was most consistent. Robo Villanova, huge signing at the beginning of the year. Almost on a discount, some would say, coming from Torino.
00:12:21
Speaker
Definitely. but But this kid has got it all. He's an absolute workhorse up and down the right side of the field and can also, as Vo said, play in that right center back role. He's 6'2", but lightning quick and...
00:12:31
Speaker
and like the counterpart that we'll be naming just a second year, is also dangerous on the offensive side of the ball. So super well-rounded player. And in a year where you can say the wingbacks were most prominent based on comparison to other seasons, this guy was the best the best. So to ah hats off, flowers to Bellanova.
00:12:50
Speaker
Yeah, listen... Not a guy that jumps off the screen at you, but when you kind of take a step back and look at 90 minutes, he is pocketing his man.
00:13:01
Speaker
He's going forward and attacking. He put up statistics with nine assists. And like you said, Lokes, like... nobody Nobody went after him besides Atalanta. didn't make much sense because you saw the promise he had last year in Torino. And this this is a guy is growing. And you all three of us expect him to be a regular on the national team and taking huge strides in the years to come. And this was ah this is kind of his first launch to the Serie A, really. is His ah welcome party season.
00:13:32
Speaker
Yeah, just to wrap him Bellanova because I love him so much. I got to get my two cents in. um I don't know how he's not already the right center back um for Italy. I think Spalletti does not watch him um partially because G.O.D. Lorenzo is his son, but he should definitely be in the Italy setup.
00:13:45
Speaker
And then I'm going to pat myself on the back. I said at the beginning of the season, um AC Milan absolutely should have bought him. And I have zero idea why they didn't. We saw what happened and they should listen to me.
00:13:56
Speaker
So I'm going pat myself on the back there. Well, I guess we have honorable mention Emerson Royale that we'll talk about a second. All right. Moving it on. ah Left wing back. This is our first guy that we're going to say is out of position technically, but he is a wing back.
00:14:13
Speaker
Motz, this is a guy that we all love. I'll give it to you. Announcement of our left wing back. Yeah, we have Denzel Dumfries in this position. He played 29 games, seven goals, three assists.
00:14:24
Speaker
um Listen, Denzel Dumfries this season, I don't want to, obviously this is a ah team ah ah team for the Serie A team of the season, but when you take a look at denphi Denzel Dumfries' season as a whole on the national team and the Champions League, what he's done for Inter, what he means for Inter,
00:14:39
Speaker
He has to be on this team. He is a constant goal threat. He plays every or when he plays, he's never subbed out. He is putting dangerous balls in the box, whether it be on the ground, in the air.
00:14:50
Speaker
He's on the back post. He's amazing in the air. So he didn't have he was probably one of the ah guys that had the least amount of games played. ah on this team that we picked, but just his season as a whole in totality, he had to be on this team, in my opinion, and also intercoming in second, they had to have a lot of or some players on this team. And I would argue that Denzel and Bastoni are two of the three most important players on the team.
00:15:18
Speaker
Yeah, listen, I don't want there to be any slander coming at me for this pick. I certainly support Denzel Dumfries. And if you don't already know, I'm the biggest La Ronde fan this side of the Mississippi or the Atlantic, wherever you want to call it.
00:15:30
Speaker
um I do love the Dutch players. Denzel is is no different there. I also think that this guy just passes the eye test game in and game out. When you watch him on the field, he's one of the most dominant players at that position and can overwhelm almost any other defensive side.
00:15:47
Speaker
Obviously a wingback, but I think his best attributes are certainly on the offensive end of the field and the way that he can create overloads on that back post. It can be so dangerous in the air, but don't let, don't get it twisted. His defensive skills are second to none.
00:16:02
Speaker
Another six to wing back with an absolute engine. This guy, especially in the Euros last year showed how good he is on the defensive end of the ball and brought that to the, to the inter squad this whole season. So ah welcome to the team of the season, Denzel Dumfries.
00:16:14
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I would say best wingback in Serie A and then beyond that, probably a top three wingback in the world. I think at times this season he was actually number one on that list. After the Champions League final on the run that PSG have had, I would probably put Hakimi there for right now.
00:16:28
Speaker
um But Dumfries and him have kind of been competing at for that spot for a while as best wingback in the world. And he deserves to be there. I mean, they he this season was phenomenal. He was such a force in so many games and be able to take over a game as a wingback is so insane.
00:16:44
Speaker
And he does it every single week. And he is such a problem to deal with because of how physically dominant he is on both ends of the pitch, being able to create goals, being able to score goals. There are almost nobody like that. I would say probably actually nobody like that.
00:17:00
Speaker
And it's just so funny because Belanova is built the same way, but completely different player. But we do have our first honorable or second honorable mention here. Logan did want to make a case for somebody. um He didn't make the team. We ultimately kicked him out, but he he had a a strong enough case where we just wanted to mention it. um And it's an interesting one.
00:17:18
Speaker
So Robin Gozens of Fiorentina is the boy. Vos also mentioned him in his X thread a couple weeks back, but this man had an absolute season. I talked about it a lot with this Fiorentina squad that this was a little bit of a hodgepodge of players with a chip on their shoulder.
00:17:34
Speaker
Robin Gozens is no different. Coming off of a tough injury run, ah couple a tough couple of years at Union Berlin, And this man had all the talent, all the promise in the world coming off the back of a stellar Euros run or was it the World Cup. Either way, was one of the best players for a German squad and unfortunately had an ACL tear on the backside of his inter stint.
00:17:57
Speaker
So to see this guy put in five and five this year ah for this Fiorentina squad, ah his partnership with Dota was unbelievable. So honorable mention, Robin Gosens.
00:18:10
Speaker
Mott, any thoughts on Robin Gohz? um If anyone's going to be an honorable mention for me, it should have been DeMarco. um That's just my opinion. there was This was a tough conversation, too. I agree. Both of those guys definitely deserve shouts. ah But that gets us into our midfield, too.
00:18:24
Speaker
I think we can actually talk about these guys together because I think when we were discussing this and we ultimately went with the two-man midfield, it was very clear who the two were going to be. And we were always trying to force like a third guy in there.
00:18:36
Speaker
And there were some cases for other people. But our midfield two is Tajani Reinders and Scott McTominay. For us, best players in the league in the midfield. We have the Serie A MVP in Scott McTominay, so he obviously had to make the team.
00:18:49
Speaker
And Tajani Reinders was probably the best overall midfielder, maybe a little bit less important to his team. But it's hard to distinguish who was actually the better. I mean, Tajani Reinders is probably overall a better player, but these were by far the two best midfielders. Lugs, if you want to start with Tajani and just talk about him a little bit.
00:19:05
Speaker
He himself a season. He shot himself a season, 14 goals, contributions for Milan's side. That was absolutely horrid. One of the only shining lights on our squad, aside from another another favorite of mine. But in any case, this man clearly showed his skill and his ability and his dominance in this league, and that's paying off right now with his link to Man City.
00:19:26
Speaker
So absolutely loved having him. i It's going to really sad day to watch him leave. He's going to go off and do great things. Another another member of La Orange. But again, a true box-to-box.
00:19:37
Speaker
Great on the ball. Press-resistant. Has great vision. Has that nose for goal when he needs it. you He's one of those guys that if you put him in any spot, any one of the three generic positions in the midfield, he's going to excel.
00:19:50
Speaker
And so clearly just one just the best, ah in my opinion, the best midfielder. um in the league this year. Not hating on McTominay at all. McTominay MVP for a reason, but I do think on a skill level, Reinders takes that home.
00:20:05
Speaker
Am I turning walk us through your boy Scott McTominay here? I think he's more your boy. there's He's just on my Gumar theme. um But yeah, I mean, listen, we talked about it on the last episode when Napoli won the league.
00:20:18
Speaker
They brought him over from United, want away player. United was happy to sell him, and he absolutely delivered for Napoli. As Vos mentioned, league MVP had some of the biggest goals of the season for Napoli and a bunch of 1-0 wins they were on.
00:20:34
Speaker
the foot or the head of Scott McTominay. He had a total of 16 goal contributions and eight goals slash assists in the last six matches, which is just goes to show hes he was clutch.
00:20:47
Speaker
um He scored, he assisted, he created, he was a box-to-box machine next to Zombo. So there was not one... thing that's that Scott McTominay did bad this season and he deservedly won the uh Serie A MVP and so he has to be on this team on Calcio Cultures team of the season well said guys um we did have an honorable mention here this was a tough group there was a couple honorable mentions that were thrown in this uh but we wanted to mention one and Mott's has to be the guy to say it Yep. yeah The honorable mention the midfield, like Vo said, it was tough. It could went a couple of different ways.
00:21:21
Speaker
um We ended up going with Kefran Taram. Juventus did finish in fourth. He was by far the best player on Juventus all season long. He had four goals and five assists, so he did the goal contributions. He did a lot of defensive work as well.
00:21:34
Speaker
um And so, yeah, Kefran Taram, I felt, or we all felt, had to be, more me, but I felt he had to be in this in this honorable mention team. No, you convinced me. I i definitely does deserve an honorable mention. and Definitely best player on Juventus. But that brings us to our forward forward line.
00:21:49
Speaker
Again, we have a three here. Some guys are going to have to be out of position. But let's start with our number nine. um We can kind pick them. I'll go back. I'll pick him. I'll go with big rum, big rum, big rum, uh, Romelu Lukaku, Napoli's goal scorer. Um, definitely overachieved. I think for, for all of us, we weren't expecting this type of season from him.
00:22:08
Speaker
He finished a campaign, 14 goals, 10 assists or 24 goal contributions. What really surprised us was the 10 assists and the ability he had to create goals for his teammates. I think beyond that, the, the intangibles that you can't, there's no statistic for it.
00:22:22
Speaker
He elevated the team. Um, me and Mott's talked about it when we talked about Napoli. Scott McTominay wouldn't be Scott McTominay this season without Lukaku and Lukaku wouldn't have been him without Scott McTominay.
00:22:32
Speaker
They fed off of each other. They made their team better. And without Romelu Lukaku, Napoli don't get this done just as much as they don't get it done without Scott McTominay. And he deserves a tremendous amount of flowers for that. And in my opinion, he should be a unanimous team of the scene player for team of the season player for every team in the season made across the board.
00:22:54
Speaker
That does bring us to our other our other forwards. I'll take the next one, LaViola's very own Moise Keane. ah What a season for him as well. Coming off of a couple of really bad seasons at Juventus, really showed the case as to why he was such a touted young prospect in this league.
00:23:15
Speaker
um Coming up through Juve's academy, ah Moise had 19 goals, three assists through 32 games. I mean, a just drastic difference from years past really brought this Fiorentina team to light and brought it kind of kept them alive when at times when they may have been dropping down the table. Yeah.
00:23:36
Speaker
um I mean, there's nothing bad you can say about about this guy this season. Possibly a little erratic, but certainly put up the numbers. And so the momentum that he gave Fiorentina at most points in this season just made him such an MVP for that team that he could not miss out on this lineup.
00:23:54
Speaker
One thing I'll add on Moise Keane is he has a legitimate shout as a starting player for the Azuri and the national team. the the guy Vos is going to mention next also does, but if you if you thought last year Moise Keane's going to make the national team, you were dead wrong.
00:24:10
Speaker
He... completely turned around people how he's perceived in the league and how he is as a player on e and in terms of hold-up play, in terms of finishing, in terms of pressing off the ball.
00:24:22
Speaker
In every way, he is now valued at a $40 million, $35 million, $40 million player. And last year, he was valued at a $10 million dollars player. So great season by Moise Keene.
00:24:33
Speaker
Yeah, and our last forward, um going back to my team, Atalanta, it's the Golden Boot winner, Matteo Rettegui, debatably signing of the season. He finished 25 goals, 8 assists, which is an absolute haul when you look at the next best 19 in Moise a Keen.
00:24:48
Speaker
Listen, you score the most goals in the league. You probably deserve to be in the team. And at the end of the day, he was the best pure striker in the league. And we felt he deserved to be here.
00:24:58
Speaker
um This is another one I don't think should be a surprise to many people. He was an absolute lethal finisher apart from some penalty misses, which is a little bit surprising. um And he's another guy that's going to have a lot of suitors coming this summer. Yeah.

Definitely really good down the stretch here for Atalanta and especially picked up some of the some of the holes when Ritegi may not have been as consistent as you would have liked. ah But Lookman deservedly big links away. He probably will be leaving Serie but certainly deserved a shout to be in this team this season, um just given all the efforts that he had, even through the turmoil, honestly, that they had the beginning of the season with him and Gasparini. So Luckman certainly had a ah was close a close runner-up to this team this season.
