Throughout history, mental illness has been recognized and treated through various means. In ancient times, supernatural or mystical explanations were used to understand mental health conditions. During the middle ages, demonology was a prevalent approach, where mental illness was attributed to demonic possession or witchcraft. By the 18th century, asylums were established to confine individuals with abnormal behavior, leading to inhumane treatment such as physical abuse and being restrained with chains. In more modern times, even well-intentioned American asylums fell to horrific practices and extreme overcrowding. In this episode, we will explore the history of mental illness treatment and focus on the stories of two particularly awful American insane asylums.
