This is a patriarchal vision of America that most Americans would reject, so he softens the presentation of his high-control religious vision to try to make it seem less radical, more inviting, and more inclusive. But by softening his message, he actually shows readers what he most wants to hide: There is no such thing as a kinder, more inclusive expression of high-control religion.
