um You're a breath of blood share in the country world these days. You have a very old school. I grew up in the eighties and nineties. So, you know, I grew up with certain artists, some artists that, you know, you've shared a stage with and you have that sound. And it's nice to hear that again in a new artist.

But like I was literally I was driving forklift at a block yard and I remember I got like an email. I was waiting to load a truck and I was checking my email and it said, thanks for signing up. Thanks for signing up for the Texaco Country Showdown.

and it was all right and then i got up and sang that blake shelton old red and we were on top of they'd taken these pool tables and put boards on top of it and made it a stage makeshift stage sounds safe we're in belfus south dakota on on these pool tables and it's kind of like a a steakhouse slash bar thing so half the people in the place are annoyed that there's this glorified karaoke contest going on in the corner. And I got up and started singing. And I just remember like, oh man, I'm really screwing something up. Everybody in this place is staring at me. And I'm like, oh,

and But I was just like i' had that like that kind of frick it mentality like frick it if I suck I suck You know, mean who cares? I don't know these people. My friends are here. They don't care You know, mean if I suck they're gonna love me anyway, who cares? let's Yeah, breakck it just send it and so but I remember singing that song and then like on the judge They were all radio personalities.

The judge was like, that's, i've we've done this competition for blah, blah years, something, whatever. That's possibly the best I've ever heard anybody do in this competition. And I was like, oh, oh no. not You know, i was like, oh, crap. and then ah And then next thing I know, like, I'd made it to the finals. I got like second or third place. And I didn't even have a guitar at the time. I barely played and was just kind of like I was singing karaoke without a teleprompter. You know what i mean? I was picking songs and didn't have any originals. And I took second or third behind some people who had originals and were actually playing an instrument.

And, you know, what I'm like, I'm like, huh. and so it kind of built my confidence i was like oh maybe i do have something you know because when you go sing karaoke and your friends are like you can sing good well yeah you're supposed to say that you know you're my friend you know so i'm like i didn't know you know i didn't know but yeah so that's kind of how things got started but no that's that's awesome man that's that's a really cool kind of like uh you know behind the scenes type of story of you know what brought you to where you are now but

gotta ask you because you know that's one of my biggest things is uh i have a i have believe it or not i have a fear of public speaking and getting in front of a crowd a couple times um you know i've been very lucky to to do a couple things and uh yeah for you you know i mean was that something that you struggled with to get over i mean after you get up there and you do that did you still have that kind of fear for the first oh yeah dude, it sucked. Um, well, like I kind of said earlier is like getting up and being goofy. Like was to get up and talk in front of people. So went to church growing up and it was like, what in the world? Uh, I, I went to church growing up and it was like, we'd have to get up and speak and talk. And so getting up and being goofy or talking in front of people wasn't like way out of the norm for me, but getting up and being serious and singing,

The Realities of the Music Industry

It's not like a huge city, um you know, like a Minneapolis or even like a Nashville or down in Texas where there's just a ton of musicians you could just grab and travel.

When we were local and just played local all the time, there was a ton of people that wanted to ah be a part of the band locally because we were drawing a good crowd. They wanted to be a part of that.

As soon as we started being gone for the weekend, it kind of cut out. a lot of people a lot of the guys that were in my band early on were church band members like they played at a church and uh so they had to be at a church like 6 a.m on sunday and we'd be seven hours away and they're like that ain't gonna work yeah you get done at one one or two a.m they can't make 6 a.m church you know so no and in the band the lineup i got now is is in for is probably one of my better lineups I feel like there's just a lot that goes into to being in a band. you know i've had I've had really, really good musicians that maybe you know were probably studio quality musicians, but being doing live stuff, they were like it was boring for them. you know So they didn't enjoy it as much. and then you know But then I've had guys that weren't that good, but loved the live performance.

And so you know you find that balance of people who enjoy it. There's a lot of work involved. You know, you drive six or eight hours, load in, sound check, sit around for five or six hours, play a show, unload your stuff, sleep for four hours, drive for six. You know, it's like there's not as, you know, there's not as much fun as as some would think, but it is.

But you got like it. Yeah, you got you gotta to really enjoy what you're doing. I mean, you know, the grind is real. I mean, you know, a lot of people get this, uh, uh vision in their head like oh i'm gonna be a rock star i'm gonna you know this is gonna happen roadies and a private bus and jets and they don't realize there's a lot of work that goes into all that before you get there dude There is a lot of work, and we're definitely in the – every time we – I think I'm like, oh, we're at a different level now of grinding it out.

Like, we're going to – this is where we get some roadies, you know? And it's like, no, it's not. We just work harder, sleep less. That's all there is. Dang it. This is the real rock star dream that nobody tells you about.

We hired a driver one time at work. We played a show. of just north of Sturgis, South Dakota. and then we had to load in and soundcheck for a wedding down in the mountains by Denver, Colorado. So we were like, well, that ain't gonna work. We definitely need somebody to drive us because I can't, I'm not gonna stay up for 40 hours, you know? And so we had to do drives down there. It went great, but you know, it wasn't something that we we could a afford or B, think of having all the time, you know? yeah and And it's, but it'd be nice.

Yeah, those long drives, they they don't sound too bad until you're, you know, a couple hours into an eight-hour drive after you've done, i already done a whole day's worth of loading sound checks and performing and and loading back up, and then you're back on the road, and you're God, this miserable. yeah Yeah, dude. That's how it is, man. that This weekend we play, so I'm in Rapid City, South Dakota, and we play in the Levitt in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which is about five hours away.

and then And we're a headliner, so that's dope. And then ah we then we'll stay the night. We got all day to chill, and we got to make it to Mitchell, South Dakota, which is only like a couple hours, so it'll be really lax.

It was just, you know, I think and that kind of with anything, you reach a certain point, even if you're like on vacation and I love to drive. I'm not, stay I don't fly anywhere. Um,

What I suck at is social media, you know, is, is, uh, I just, I don't have a strong desire to be on social media, but I'll do it if it's, if it naturally, but you know, you got artists that spend all day shooting video and, and, and doing things to help their, their brand. I mean, that's that's kind of like, you know, my girlfriend's here. I got kids. I work a nine to five. Unfortunately, I still have to work. you know but ah Yeah. Yeah. I get it. I understand. It's the show that we do on Saturday nights now. but it has my original show logo on it and it's got my name and everything like that uh trophy smack made it for us uh so i paid for it they didn't they weren't like hey your podcast is really great is free younna make you they're like thanks for buying yeah but i will shout out and i have no problem saying that because this this one on this side uh is the same as this one but it was a little bit defective and i and i had it less than a month and they just they they just put vinyls on them but it's real leather and metal

It's about an eight pound belt, but the vinyl started peeling off of the first one that I got. And I reached out to customer service and they're like, we'll have you another one out. And within about a week, the new one showed up. But I said, what do you want me to do with that? Keep it.

It was right by the bridges and stuff and we're up to that height. And he dropped a, dropped a buddy off. They turned around and went to leave. We can only assume that they were like, well, when you check the bridges, we just checked them. Well, the bridge washed out and they were rolled over and he died. so I was like, that happened. And then my parents and I, I graduate high school, we move out and and the neighbor girl, Brandy, and her family moved into that house. And i and i ah they were like my best friends, almost like cousins or sister, you know, like really loved them.
