And I'm at Hallis Hall and they let me let me hang out here.
00:01:09
Speaker
Perfect. Perfect. Yeah. Are going to get again any. ah is Is there going to be a surprise CM Punk or ah or Seth? No. Siting. No, he's the everybody's in.
00:01:22
Speaker
overseas over in oh like that's right in Europe. So yeah, we're getting ready for um ah Clash. Paris in Paris. But I want all my picks back.
00:01:36
Speaker
And daily put me because I feel like it draft Draft Day is a severely underrated movie, by the way. I actually enjoy. i enjoy it immensely. Christina hates it.
00:01:47
Speaker
She's like, it's dumb. And I'm like, it's incredibly dumb. It's super dumb. The fact that that they undid a draft at the draft was like wild.
00:01:59
Speaker
But hey, they got him. It's it's the Hollywood, Hollywood vacation. You know who rules in that movie? Chadwick Boseman. Oh, yeah. I was going to say he's he steals everything as the ah both linebacker or the D lineman. Like he's awesome in that movie.
00:02:14
Speaker
Well, as we said at the top, it is draft day. We have not done this in little bit. It's been, I think, three years, actually, since we've done one of these. 2022. A figure draft. Last time we did a draft, it was the Warped Tour one, and I believe...
00:02:34
Speaker
one of our participants won that. Correct? Correct. Correct. um He did. So he's got some bragging rights to defend.

Toy Draft Rules and Strategies

00:02:42
Speaker
um But yeah, so we we are headed. And then i won the OG draft.
00:02:46
Speaker
You did. um You remarked the remarkably, I think everyone but you misunderstood the assignment with that one and left some some pretty, pretty big, big chips on the table, like three rounds in a row.
00:03:03
Speaker
um So we'll go over the rules

August Giveaway Announcement

00:03:05
Speaker
in a minute. But but I had the greatest toy store on the planet. It was unbelievable. Oh, that's right. That was the theme, right? We were. No, i was just. We were setting up.
00:03:15
Speaker
But wasn't that what it was like? We had no. We just we had like the KB logo and stuff, but it was nine. We did. But it it was based off of the ah the old Chris Gethard. Food court. That's right.
00:03:27
Speaker
yeah Yeah. I knew I had there' was something with mall mall in mind um and and not the Darth variety. But ah before we hop into the draft, of course, little bit of housekeeping here. Eric, are we giving something away this ah this um August?
00:03:43
Speaker
Are we ever, Dave? um So ah as as we've been saying for the month of August, it's giveaway time, bub. um We've partnered up with our friends at ah Hold Your Liquid Death right in the middle. You got to do it right in the middle.
00:03:59
Speaker
I forgot. We'll do it. Come on. In a second. um so we we've partnered up with uh with our friends at power of x-men uh to give away this marvel legends uh x-men 97 wolverine so um really really great figure arguably one of the best uh marvel legends wolverines that is out there whether you are a fan of the animated series or not it's just a great classic tiger stripe uh blue and yellow wolverine so um you have a chance to win one and you do that by visiting us at aic underscore podcast or at power of x-men you you pick where you want to start your journey but uh it is pinned at the top of our uh profile so uh you can find that post you can read all all the instructions one place but you must follow both true
00:04:48
Speaker
That was very sage-like. um You can start in one place, but you must follow both. You know what? That's actually good because you're not going to get to do that otherwise today. So yeah yeah you got it. You got Figured you'd get the Lipton.
00:05:03
Speaker
That was like part Lipton, part Olmec. oh the choice is yours and yours alone um but uh freaking silver monkey uh but uh yeah so at aic underscore podcast on instagram uh the giveaway is running all through throughout august uh we will have a new giveaway announced uh ah September 1st is Labor Day, so I don't know if we'll do it September 1st, like the actual announcement of the next giveaway, because we'll probably be doing doing barbecue

Special Guests: Ryan Ting and Jason Langston

00:05:35
Speaker
things.
00:05:35
Speaker
But um early early September, we will announce the September giveaway. But we will announce the winner on September 1st, so i will I will say that. So keep um keep an eye out for...
00:05:47
Speaker
uh for that but um i think that's the only housekeeping that we have uh to to tend to uh this evening i think with that we can um start talking about our guests and uh bring them in and and explain the rules of this year's draft because it is a little different little different year we've got some we've got some wrinkles we've got some some complications but um I am super excited, i of course, to oh ah intro our guests here. One of them is a longtime friend of the pod, um somebody who you've heard ah not only on on this podcast many times, but several other

Toy Industry Insights and Learning

00:06:31
Speaker
podcasts. And, and you know, you you know him from his ah his legendary run at Hasbro. So first we're going to bring in and say hello to Ryan Ting. Ryan, welcome back to the show, man.
00:06:45
Speaker
Hello, Dave and Eric. Thanks for having me back. Hi, Ryan. I did not know that there was a winner declared from the Warped Tour draft that we did.
00:06:57
Speaker
so that's i know I finished dead last. So there was a fan poll and when the ah the votes from the comments and the votes from the story voting were tallied together, you you had me you had me be pretty square. i I want to say it was like by at least 10 votes like it was double digits.
00:07:19
Speaker
um dave Dave got like I was just happy to be there. You got like one vote like and it wasn't me. wow Yeah, I screwed that one up. In the mail, I suppose. I wasn't aware that that was the finish.
00:07:33
Speaker
that was a finished so So just just bragging rights, we're still working on that that Archie trophy for for the Toy Line of the Year award. i have I have the trophy.
00:07:44
Speaker
The head has been sawed off. I have the 3D printed Archie head. I just need to kind of finish the project. pra So it's a work in progress. everything's it's We've only been a podcast for six years. I mean, it's not...
00:07:58
Speaker
enough and um But let's let's bring in our other guests as well. So we have a new friend of the pod, somebody that ah we have been wanting to talk to for a long time. But um for four reasons, we weren't able to ever book him on the show.
00:08:13
Speaker
But now we can. So i it is it is my pleasure to welcome longstanding member of the toy community and our new friend, ah Jason Langston.
00:08:26
Speaker
Hello. There he is. hello Here I am. And you you guys were just on a panel together, right? At at San Diego Comic Con. Back to the back it back. Friday and Saturday. Yes, it was awesome.
00:08:39
Speaker
Eric, the things we we've missed over the years. Yep, yep. Maybe we'll get out there next year. i said We say it every year. That's the hope. But this year might actually be it's It's such a heavy lift to get out there from New Jersey. like It's just between like the hotel situation. Because like the hotel is booked up in like January.
00:08:58
Speaker
it's like I can't plan that far ahead. got two kids and a full-time job. It's like impossible to think about San Diego Comic-Con in January. I just i just can't wrap my head around it.
00:09:09
Speaker
but I'm trying to go to L.A. for lulls. And it's like... yeah it's very very expensive it's very it's a very expensive endeavor but um it's this is this is going to be fun guys because we have uh i know i already made this joke offline so i'm gonna i'm gonna sell myself out here on it but like we have two of the hottest free agents in the toy industry um help helping uh helping us do our this year's uh toy draft so um Yeah, I mean, it's it's a it's awesome to have you guys on the occasionally annual toy draft.
00:09:46
Speaker
Yeah, um I wish i I wish the circumstances would be a little more celebratory in terms of what's going on in your your professional careers. But you guys are both amazing and we are so excited to see what you guys have lined up next, where you land, wherever you go. um They will be extremely, extremely lucky to have both of you, um you know, for for people that might be I mean, if you're listening to this podcast, I hope you know who these two individuals are.
00:10:15
Speaker
But, um you know, anyone who's a fan of Marvel Legends and and, of course, Star Wars, you know, Ryan has been doing that at Hasbro for 12. It was 12 years, right? um Yeah, just over just over 12 years. But living my best life now and we'll we'll see what's next.
00:10:33
Speaker
and And Jason, of course, ah is coming off of an an incredible run at McFarland Toys overseeing the the DC multiverse line, which, you know, it's incredible, absolutely incredible um and definitely not a line of Batman.
00:10:51
Speaker
um but ah But like we we know we were just talking before, you know we've got all timers that came out you know during during your run there. And then, then of course, prior to that, you know you were also overseeing DC over at Mattel. So um you're just you're you're you are ah ah full of all of the the DC awesomeness. So, um yeah.
00:11:15
Speaker
Thanks, Eric. i I wouldn't say I oversaw at Mattel. I was definitely part of a team. Bill Benneke, he's my, you know, if but if there was a knighthood there, he would be my lord, you know, i was hit but his squire when I was there.
00:11:30
Speaker
um But, yeah, I had had a lot of fun in McFarland. i' Looking forward to figuring out what's next. Been working on my portfolio all week, actually, so it's kind of fun to see stuff and be like, oh, yeah, I could take that out. That's fine.
00:11:45
Speaker
you know it's It's been good. um on Everything's fine. we're We're good, man. Everything's good. So to both of you, because this is often a question that like you know we don't get to ask in in kind of a retrospective moment or and a thing where it's like you know i you can't talk about products that haven't come out yet or things that you didn't get a chance to make. Usually there's you know that kind of barrier there.
00:12:08
Speaker
Is there one thing that each of you can name like Brian from Marvel, Jason from you know DC, if if there was one figure that you could have gotten across the finish line and gotten made during your time there, what what would it be?
00:12:24
Speaker
You want to go first, Ra, or do you want me go first? Yeah, I mean, the the glaring example in the my run of Marvel Legends was our one HazLab that didn't work out for a lot of reasons. So I'm speaking of the Engine of Vengeance featuring Robbie Reyes, Ghost Rider.
00:12:40
Speaker
And had some additional characters in there as unlockable tiers. But now the team has found other ways to get those out. So Mephisto in a different configuration with the throne is the next kind open pre-order type model, which was revealed at San Diego, and I believe is up for pre-order for a little bit while longer. but Yeah, I mean, everyone kind of takes their lumps, and Star Wars head had a few ones had had two, I think, unsuccessful Haslabs, although one was a role-play item which kind of doesn't really count, and there was a cookie monster and other things that didn't pan out. So i was reallying I was really hoping that the Marvel Legends team, that we would not contribute to the failed list of ideas, but I think um it just wasn't the iconic Ghost Rider that people grew up with, right? You're talking about, you know, we're doing our research on 80s toy lines, right, when most people...
00:13:25
Speaker
think about Ghost Rider, they don't think of the newer Robbie Reyes, even though the item was really cool, but we definitely learned a lot from it and you kind of saw that when we came back with the Giant Man campaign the following year, which was successful again, it was a different price point and we just kind of strategically David Price- different sort of things, and I think we learned from that and and the team continues to that's why there hasn't been ah another Marvel Legends has lab since then they continue to do. David Price- These other you know made to order type approaches but that's the one that's the one that I love a mulligan on to go back and try something else.
00:13:59
Speaker
Ryan, that one hurt me too. and ah I can imagine, yeah. I was ah i was a minute one backer. I think I backed during that like 1202 whenever the YouTube ran. Yeah, the presentation had not ended. Yeah.
00:14:15
Speaker
The funniest part about the Engine of Vengeance campaign was we we borrowed a play from several other campaigns that had worked there. It was this idea of an early bird. kind of deal where if a certain condition is met by before the campaign ends, right, then something additional. And so we had an early bird kind of package and that it didn't get to that point. And then you started to see us lose backers.
00:14:37
Speaker
And it was like, as the campaign on the arrow started going down, which was like, clearly not um how you get crowd funds to succeed. But um so that was kind of a crying, crying while laughing.
00:14:50
Speaker
I had a broken leg at the time, so I had nothing to do but watch the numbers and all it like was my end quint condition was not improving. Yeah, ah yeah I was getting I was getting text messages where it was like, Eric, the numbers going down, Eric, the numbers. And I was like, I i know, Dave. I know. Why is this happening?
00:15:09
Speaker
ah Yes. As somebody who only collects Ghost Rider figures, that was that was very tough for me to watch you go through that.
00:15:20
Speaker
Oh, man. Jason, what about you? What was what would would have been the one DC figure that you would have loved to have gotten out? Well, so the challenge with the toy industry with questions like this is that we work a year out.
00:15:34
Speaker
So I've already turned over all the concepts for next year. So there's a lot of stuff in there that I had always wanted to do that's coming out next year that I can't talk about. But um i what got away, though?
00:15:50
Speaker
And I can't spoil anything that came out, but the one that I was most excited that almost got away was Monarch. um And because this figure I wanted to do like right away and it took until this year to finally come out. So it just kept getting like, ah, maybe next time, ah maybe next time, maybe next time. So this one came very close to being the one that got away.
00:16:10
Speaker
um And then... ah I would say Detective Chimp, but he's he's coming. So I don't know. there it I mean, the crazy thing about my run there is that it got to a point where I could pretty much pick any character that I wanted to do as long as I could make the tooling and the budget work. And ah so we did a lot of really ridiculous deep cut stuff.
00:16:31
Speaker
um
00:16:34
Speaker
Yeah. ah
00:16:37
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I've always wanted to do a grainy goodness. I think it's pretty safe to say we probably won't get ah a grain goodness. So I just it would be awesome to get a grain of goodness. That one would be pretty fun to do.
00:16:50
Speaker
that's it That is certainly a deep cut. yeahp yeah Yep. That was actually, and I'm cheating i'm mean cheating a little bit because that was Eric's um from the Four Horsemen. Someone had asked him that question on a panel years ago, and he said that he'd always wanted to do a grain goodness. And I'm like, you're right, Eric. So I am kind of borrowing a little bit, but it's it's a solid answer.
00:17:10
Speaker
It's totally fine. Totally fine. um Well, you know, i I said it before, but I'll i'll say one more time. you know, we're we're super, super excited to see, you know, where you guys land next.
00:17:21
Speaker
And ah and and we're to continue on the journey. Yep. And we're super excited to see how this ah how this draft works out here. So ah this this year, a little bit different.
00:17:33
Speaker
So we are we are headed back to the 1980s, oftentimes considered like the golden age of of action figures and marketing them towards children.
00:17:44
Speaker
Yeah. um In a way that is very illegal now. But i so rather than do toy lines, we are doing individual um characters. So like individual toys.
00:17:58
Speaker
So ah the way that it's going to work is in just a moment here, we will determine our random draft order. And i our our contestants, so will be four teams total, will pick any singular action figure that came out between 1980 and 1989 to fill a slot in each of the following categories. So we've got superhero, non-human,
00:18:24
Speaker
Wrestler, vehicle, and then the the wild card category. So these categories can be filled in any order. So if you, if Ryan, if you get the first pick and you want to go straight to superhero, you can. If you want to do your wild card right out the gate, you absolutely can.
00:18:40
Speaker
There is just because one person picks a certain category doesn't mean anyone else has to do that one first. But the wrinkle. So once a figure a character is picked, so let's say um i get the first pick and I go with Kenner superpowers Batman.
00:18:58
Speaker
What was that? I was going say, pick a nineties toy. Just okay. Yeah. Um, well, let's just say i go with, yeah. If let's say a modern line. Yeah. Or I was going to say, you know, I pick elite one 18 Seth Rollins for my wrestling figure.
00:19:13
Speaker
That means that Seth Rollins is completely off the table. He can't be used in the wrestling category. Can't be used in the wildcard category. Um, that, that name is completely off. It takes the character off the table. So, um,
00:19:26
Speaker
Because we're picking from such a huge pool of action figures, we thought that that might be a fun little way to ah to make it a little more difficult. So um everyone, everyone good on the rules.
00:19:39
Speaker
who Anyone have any questions before we we do our random order here? If you had picked Mankind, could someone come back and pick Cactus Jack or with that? Absolutely. Different character. it's Gimmicks count, Ryan. Gimmicks count. Yeah. um So, yeah, ah that the three faces of Foley would have been a a fun rule breaker for for a 90s version of this. So keep that in mind maybe for next year.
00:20:06
Speaker
um With that, I'm going to share my screen here and we will do our random draft order. So ah let's let's click big money, big money, big money, big money, big money, big money. And the first pick goes to Jason. So our draft order is going to be ah Jason, myself, Dave and Ryan. You're you're so you get that. ah And we're going the snack snake draft order. So, Ryan, you get the.
00:20:35
Speaker
what I think is actually the position that I love to be in that, that first double pick. Yeah. So you get picks four and five. So, um, Dave, you are going to be the, uh, the controller of the draft order here and and keeping us, uh, on, on pace and on card.
00:20:52
Speaker
So, uh, Yeah, with that, Jason, you are you are up first with ah with your first pick. So you're you're on the board. which ah which Which category are we doing or doesn't matter?
00:21:05
Speaker
Doesn't matter. You can pick whichever one you want to do first. Eric, do you have like, are you going to have the results like in front of you? um I'm going to try. Or do you want me to do that?
00:21:15
Speaker
If you could do that, that would actually be great. Because I'm going to try to pull up um pictures as we as we come across here. so Okay. All right. I am going to go...
00:21:29
Speaker
with wrestler because that's the most challenging one for me i didn't have any of the ljn figures i didn't have any of the hasbro stuff when i was a kid what i did have was a knockoff wrestling champs figure and my favorite one was called cg so i don't know if it's so so sue so co or so co or something like that but it's They were like basically He-Man figures with like a wrestler-type sculpted head. and I found them at Odd Lots when I was a kid. It was the only wrestling figures I ever had.
00:22:07
Speaker
Oh my goodness. That one was my favorite. so There you go. nah I'm sorry, that i one's off the board now. You guys just can't pick that one now. ah So wait, so you did... CG is the top left.
00:22:19
Speaker
Keep going. Go back up. Yep, CG's right That one. All right. You had like a fake Big John Stud. You had a fake Andre the Giant. But that one was my guy right there. Interesting. Okay. So, dave I actually remember you had this one. You had you had Mark.
00:22:34
Speaker
You had the one that looked like Andre the Giant. I actually remember that. A character named A Champ.
00:22:42
Speaker
They're so good. these are These are wonderful. i haven't You definitely had some of these, Dave. Jimmy Snook is quite a colorway on that figure.
00:22:56
Speaker
It's clearly Hogan, but it's not Hogan. know But not like brute like bru like the cologne. Yeah. ah Oh my god, that's so funny. Alright, that's my first choice. That's my first pick, guys.
00:23:10
Speaker
wow's let's chris here Let's hear it. and <unk>ll I'll present the jersey to the figure later.
00:23:18
Speaker
All right. So that is our first pick. So Dave, is that that brings it to me next, right? um Yes, Eric, you are up. All right. I am... oh man. Okay. i I did not... Hmm.
00:23:32
Speaker
Okay. I am going to go...
00:23:38
Speaker
with the superhero category. Okay. And i am going to take.
00:23:47
Speaker
ah Let's do 1984 Mattel Secret Wars, black suit, symbiote Spider-Man. That's a solid one.
00:23:59
Speaker
um So, I mean, this is like the iconic of iconic figures from, um From that ah that line, ah it was the the one that everybody wanted.
00:24:13
Speaker
It was the the marquee a figure from you know from the the actual like comic book ah series. right gears um so and and and The lore behind that one is that Mattel wanted to do another Spider-Man, but the first one was so expensive because of all the deco.
00:24:32
Speaker
So they asked for something unique and got an all black, basically a snake eyes Spider-Man. Interesting. I didn't know that. Yeah. It's the lore behind that one.
00:24:45
Speaker
Also, Eric and nu managed to knock two figures from that line off. Spider-Man and Spider-Man and Spider-Man forever. Right. Cause we can't pick Spider-Man in any other line now. Correct. spider Spider-Man is, uh, is officially off the table. why is Spider-Man also gone.
00:25:01
Speaker
Yep. that one Was that one in the 90s, though? I think we were okay on that one. Yeah, Dave. That first name? Yeah, the only the only Marvel figures for the The 80s were Secret Wars.
00:25:16
Speaker
Secret Wars, or um and there were some... ah Oh my God. The name just left my head. End to end of the line Migos? Migos. Thank you. Yeah. There were a couple of straggler Migos at the end the day. This was one of my favorite figures when I was a kid.
00:25:34
Speaker
with yeah I just want to declare, Jason, so are you trying to say that an all-black figure with just a white spider and white eyes is less deco than a Spider-Man that is red, blue, black with white eyes?
00:25:47
Speaker
revbel We never thought of that. Oh my goodness. You've been doing it all wrong for all these years.
00:25:57
Speaker
It's more. I'm sure someone in the fact checkers are going to like, that guy's full of stuff. Wait, can I curse? I can't. You can absolutely curse. You can absolutely curse. um It's full of garbage. I couldn't do it. I was already tripped up. Brian teases me me quite a bit because I've got Polly Melt on our panels.
00:26:14
Speaker
Like one of the times we signed each other's name cards and in mine, he just wrote like pound sign, at sign, exclamation point. Yeah.
00:26:24
Speaker
ah Yes. yeah i have I have the Secret War Spider-Man in my case right there. When god when was it, like 10 years ago, 11 years ago, the the Mattel archivists wanted to start like buying some stuff that they needed, like they that they didn't have in their archives, and they had excess of other things. So they started doing these employee-only sales.
00:26:47
Speaker
And there was a lottery that you would go like you'd have to get there in the morning and they would do a lottery. And if they pick you, then you get to go first, second, all the way to the end. It didn't start that way. In the beginning, it was just whoever showed up first.
00:26:58
Speaker
And you had guys like Darren and Garrett Sander, and they were sleeping out like basically the night so that they could get in there. And they were buying just stacks of Masters figures, just stacks of them.
00:27:11
Speaker
So the one time I won, I got first pick. All I wanted was Secret Wars. So I went straight to it. And the thing was, the dude that was like number three was so fast that he just zipped around me and went right to it. And I was like, dude, to all I want is a Spider-Man. can you please just let me have this Spider-Man? So I had a Spider-Man on card.
00:27:30
Speaker
And it was i it was like $10 or something like that. It was awesome. And course, I opened it because I don't like keeping him in the box. But yeah, the archive sales were pretty wild.
00:27:42
Speaker
See, now if you were a Ryan, you would have done one in, one out.
00:27:46
Speaker
but but and One to rock, one to stock. A sale like that would be would be awesome. Hasbro wouldn't do that. they had the ah we I had the opposite experience where they were like, oh, the building that where we have an arc that has like, Hasbro was selling an old building.
00:28:03
Speaker
And part of that was the archive and they were like, hey, all designers go down there and pull only the things you absolutely need for reference and then everything else we're gonna like throw out. And I like snuck down there, like marketers weren't invited, but I just went anyways.
00:28:17
Speaker
um And just i i had to leave immediately because knowing that like all this stuff was just gonna be trashed, like, and they were like, you can't take it, don't try to take anything. So it was like the opposite of, you know, why not just sell,
00:28:30
Speaker
It's tough. would be lining up or fighting for it, right? Like, so. Yeah. how was yeah There was Transformers, G.I. Joe, like stuff I had never seen, never knew existed right because you can't possibly like remember everything from the 80s and 90s. And then all these other licenses that had come and gone throughout the years, like Hasbro had a run on the Pokemon license at some point. So I walked by this aisle with all this just Pokemon stuff that my son would have loved. And it was like just knowing that it was going to go somewhere, not to a loving home, just kind of broke my heart a little bit. So I had to go. there oh man that's brutal like i've just seen green cards and yellow cards just getting like trashed yeah yeah the wwf stuff oh my god yeah oh my god and a lot that stuff that's still in the master carton so it's unpunched and everything like it's just yeah it was like weathered time and that's it that's all it's all yeah
00:29:20
Speaker
I had an intern my last year that I was there and we went to the the the sale and she got a doll that if you cranked the arm, it's a very famous, like almost infamous doll that if you crank the arm, she develops.
00:29:35
Speaker
Like she like grows flat. It's the worst. It's so mechanical, but it was like the like ah the the, I can't remember what they called it, but it was some sort of Barbie doll where she- Yeah, she was in the movie.
00:29:47
Speaker
Yes, yes, yeah, yeah. it was But she got it, and I was like, wow, that is a solid pickup right there. That is wild. but Amazing. oh All right, Dave, you're up for ah for your first pick here, I think.
00:30:00
Speaker
This is insane, but Eric literally took my number one overall pick. Perfect. So I'm going I'm instead going to go into my my wheelhouse because I have a feeling this one's going to,
00:30:16
Speaker
not stick around long if I don't take it. um So I'm going to go LJN wrestling macho man. Randy Savage knew it. I thought for sure that was going to be your first pick, like for sure.
00:30:32
Speaker
mean, it was he was your mount. He was on your Mount Rushmore, for God's sakes. I know it would have been more strategic depending on where I was. But with with Ryan after me and you ahead of me, ah knew I had an idea that Spider-Man wasn't lasting long and I knew Macho Man would not come back around, I think.
00:30:51
Speaker
so i love it I love that Steve Ozer and the the guys over at Mattel are bringing back the big rubber guys. like I know the the the Majors did it first, but it's still it's it's really cool. like I just think it's fun to get those again.
00:31:05
Speaker
I never had them. Like I said, we we were poor growing up. So that's why I had a lot of Odd Lots toys. Hey, we're nothing wrong with Rack Toys. Some of the best toys that have have ever existed have been Rack Toys.
00:31:18
Speaker
That's where I got my Secret War stuff was from Odd Lots. I was say some of my stuff too came from a lot. Yep. Yep. I have a couple of things on my list that I got there.
00:31:29
Speaker
Perfect. All right, Ryan, you're up. Yeah. you yeah and You get, you get a double picks here. All right. So when I would do these drafts with Dan and Dwight on the Hasbro Paul streams, we would always try to, you know, use some gamesmanship and strategy. So I did that a little bit here in my notes and,
00:31:48
Speaker
It's funny that like two wrestling right out the gate, like I would not have gone that way because wrestling I feel like is a very ah shallow category. but the any rate At any rate, I feel very confident in the next two picks, guys. So first up for my fourth pick, interesting that it's number four. I'm going to go the non-human category. I'm going Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
00:32:13
Speaker
1988, Raphael. And I believe by the rule of four, that gives me, i am granted the other three just automatically. Uh, no. I think so. I think so. I think that's pretty No, no, not, no, not that's that I can concede, but I do think this turns into a little bit of like an IP draft. Cause I get, I get, um, we're not doing toy lines, but in in the case where in this era, right? Like the only Marvel toys were, were,
00:32:41
Speaker
Secret Wars made by Mattel, you're kind of like cornering the market and then like someone else could be like, oh, Secret Wars, Captain America. But then you're kind of, I feel, splitting the vote a little bit in terms of fans of that thing. So the second person, I feel like could make a stronger selection elsewhere, but that's just...
00:32:57
Speaker
Yeah, not that's definitely part of the strategy, right? Like, you know, will somebody look at the superhero category and go, OK, I'm going to vote for the Secret Wars character. That's not Symbiote Spider-Man, right? Like that because like that's not the the character I would have picked personally. Like that wasn't my personal favorite, but.
00:33:18
Speaker
in the gamesmanship of trying to win this tournament or win this exercise. Uh, that's why I made that pick, but yeah, I totally get what you're saying. Cause now you're, you've got the turtle.
00:33:29
Speaker
So does anyone else want to beat Raphael? Right. he's but He's the best. So you, get he, you know, you can try, but, uh, except in the n NES game, he's the worst in the n NES game. Donatello. Yeah. With the reach. ah Yeah. You need the reach, man. It's all about the reach. Um,
00:33:46
Speaker
No, but this was, you you know, this this line. I was kind of surprised with your your episode with Kyle that no one had any turtles on their Mount Rushmore. I was like shouting and i was like shouting through the headphones, like, someone better pick a Ninja Turtle, and no one did.
00:33:59
Speaker
but so um And I didn't know that that that we were going to do this podcast, so I'm glad that I got to take him here. And yeah, just this line, this figure, this card. Playmates can keep putting these out every five years in a different slightly different formula or box set, and I will just buy it just just because I feel compelled to.
00:34:16
Speaker
um And they do. That's my that's my ah round four pick. And then I get the fifth pick. Solid. Solid pick. On the snake here. And I don't know. Hopefully the judges will allow this pick.
00:34:28
Speaker
I think it makes sense. I'm going to go vehicle. Okay. I'm going to 1984 Optimus Prime. I think that counts. I'm going to go with that as a vehicle.
00:34:40
Speaker
I get turtles and I get my transformers. kind of those were the two Those are the two lines that I really wanted representation. So I'm glad it worked out. I think it's yeah. and And you got the you know, you have the carrier in the back. We could put characters in there as a vehicle. Yeah, it's solid. I think it could have gone in in three categories, to be honest. yes So, yep.
00:35:02
Speaker
Oh, what was the third category? Did you think you go in? Wrestler, obviously. Wild wild card, non-human or. Oh, wow. Yeah. Wild card superhero superhero. So that was one of the things, right? Like it's it's a little bit of this is up for interpretation, right? In terms of, ah you know, like I full disclosure, I had Optimus on my list for for um a non-human option with the hope that, you know, I might be able to ah to pick him up. But no, yeah, that's I totally works as a vehicle. It is. It is. It has wheels.
00:35:40
Speaker
So count it, count it. right, I'm going to take him off my list. So, Dave, who's who's next? Me. OK, back to you. All right. Back to me.
00:35:52
Speaker
um
00:35:55
Speaker
I think I got to get this one out of the way because there's still too many options. There's there's too many pit people who haven't picked a superhero. And I think I got to get this one out of the way, and I think it's the second most obvious choice.
00:36:11
Speaker
We're going Kenner, Superpowers, Superman. oh solid All right. When you said in the example, Kenner superpowers, I almost I almost jumped through my screen. You're like, don't get away. that Also, that also eliminates the very awesome toy biz Superman figure.
00:36:31
Speaker
Right. Because it's Superman. He's off the board. That one was awesome because it came with a magnetic ring ring tonight and it would force him down. Anytime I suggested magnet when I was working with tell, I would get the dirtiest look from the QC guys because they're like they're dangerous. You can't do magnets.
00:36:46
Speaker
was like, what talking about in a ring? And it pushed him down. That is such a gorgeous figure, though. Gorgeous packaging. It's yep. Yep. And that's the reason why I picked this over a toy biz, because it's effectively like it's the mold over. Right. But yeah this one, yeah i like the action feature on the figure as opposed to like the you need the ring.
00:37:07
Speaker
Yep. Because if you're just using a magnet like it's not people don't remember that, like. in the early 80s, until 1989, Superman was the guy because he had all the films like everybody wanted the Superman stuff. Yeah. It wasn't until the Keaton movie came along that it changed all that. But Superman was the guy that was this. That was a superpowers figure I had to was a Superman.
00:37:28
Speaker
So good. And I mean, he's like number one in the series like it's. Yeah. Yeah. Good pick I think he's won Batman's two, if I remember correctly.
00:37:40
Speaker
Wonder Woman 3. Yeah.
00:37:44
Speaker
All right. so that brings us what back to me? you sir. You also have the little comic which ruled. o I read those all the time. Jeez. All right. What do I want to do here?
00:37:57
Speaker
um
00:38:02
Speaker
You know, i ah
00:38:05
Speaker
I'm pretty confident in my, that my wrestling pick is going to be safe. Um, Hmm. You know, i think I'm going to do, I'm going go vehicle.
00:38:19
Speaker
So I'm going to go to the, uh, the vehicle category and i am going to, i I'm just going to get one of the most iconic toy vehicles that has ever been created off the board.
00:38:37
Speaker
um Something that everyone wanted, people today still want and can't get. I am going with the GI Joe USS flag. Wow. So the big boy, I'm taking it off the board.
00:38:53
Speaker
That is that is my ah i I think to this day, it is the most iconic toy vehicle that has ever been made. um The envy of all.
00:39:06
Speaker
and something that is pretty much logistically impossible to make now. umm so Imagine sending that out to be graded. is that what the, oh my God, that's, I just realized that's what this is. That's what i pulled up.
00:39:19
Speaker
It does say or best offer guys. So, I mean, my best offer is $50. Unless you're doing like a manual drop-off, how are you grading that?
00:39:33
Speaker
That's like an aquarium tank. that had acry Seriously. that that the ac I wonder how much that weighs with that acrylic case on it. Jesus. And what if like ah an arm hair or something fell in there and then they sealed it and it's just trapped in there for eternity.
00:39:49
Speaker
And I'm actually realizing that it's sealed. The the actual box is sealed. That's that's wild. That is wild. Wow. I wonder if that one came out of the storage, snuck under the...
00:40:02
Speaker
like put of the shadow under Put it under your shirt. and lock it so islam Is that one of those ones where like somebody hit a Christmas present like really well and then found it years later?
00:40:16
Speaker
So that actually happened recently with one of these. um i i forget the the ah I didn't even know i was teeing that up. Yeah, i I forget his name. He's he's one he's one of the guys that's over at Super 7. He's like M.G. I know his his Instagram handle, but I'm i'm blanking on his name.
00:40:35
Speaker
He had a situation like that where ah one of his family members reached out to him was like, hey, I found this thing in the attic. Is it worth anything? and it was a sealed flag. o No, he was like that's to just give it to me. It's fine. I'll take it. It's all right. We'll take care of it.
00:40:50
Speaker
Yes. And go to auction now. yes it's serious Yeah, seriously. You're real. Apparently there's like one piece. um Shouts to to friend of the pod, ah Khalil at Castor's Corner, who who was telling me this story.
00:41:03
Speaker
Apparently there is like the tiniest of tiny pieces that are on the flag. It's this like little like rudder type thing that is very like broke off of everybody's like on on assembly.
00:41:15
Speaker
um And if you have just that piece, that like piece alone is worth hundreds of dollars. And it's like, like this big. So, wow.
00:41:27
Speaker
Yeah. All right. So, yeah. USS Flag. i that nice Jason got jason two coming up here. And now a word from our sponsors.
00:41:43

00:42:18
Speaker
And tell them Adventures in Collecting sent you.
00:42:24
Speaker
And now, back to the show.
00:43:15
Speaker
So I will say that you guys have only eliminated one, and that was the Toy Biz Superman with the Kryptonite ring. So I'm i'm still feeling pretty good. I'm also thinking that I may have gone more deep cut than the three of you did.
00:43:29
Speaker
I have deep cut picks too. Okay. I'll share some of them later. Okay. um So I'm going to go with vehicle.
00:43:40
Speaker
And my absolute favorite vehicle... when I was a kid was the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 from Kenner. I didn't understand the chair sitting on the top, but it had lasers that usually were worn out, so they just dripped down the little orange ghost with the claw, and you rolled it, and it pulled the the ghost in.
00:44:01
Speaker
That was... i got that one, and I got Ecto-1A when I was a kid. because And it's the same thing. they didn't train It was just stickers that they changed. yeah But I loved that.
00:44:12
Speaker
I love that car. I bought the repro when kenner iwin ah Hasbro re-released it like six, seven years ago or whatever. Yep. The artwork, everything.
00:44:23
Speaker
and So um this, full disclosure, Jason, this was what I was, I was between this and the flag were my where my one and two. i went with like, I went with my my my gut and ended up with the flag, but this was nested right underneath it. So yeah, I um i love it.
00:44:41
Speaker
Yeah, thank you. Thank you. um Okay, and so then, all right, so then I can scratch off the others. I won't say what my other ones were so that I don't spoil anything. You guys are going for them.
00:44:52
Speaker
And then my wild card was... So like I said, we we didn't have a lot of money growing up.
00:45:03
Speaker
So I got a lot of Happy Meal toys, odd lot toys. And for some reason, I had a shit ton of California Raisins figures. So for my wild card, I'm going with specifically the California Raisins blue sunglasses guy, or I'll take Tiny Good Bite.
00:45:19
Speaker
Tiny Good Bite was the one with the microphone. I had so many of them. I don't even know who made them. I just know that I had a bunch of them and I was obsessed with them when I was a kid. We definitely had these two,
00:45:37
Speaker
That's the one. There's your blue sun gases guy. That was my guy. And even after long after I lost the other ones, I still had him for the longest time.
00:45:48
Speaker
Don't understand it, but I loved it. So, yeah. No, those are great. can't I mean, Happy Meal toys back in the day were as good as real toys. Like, let's let's let's be real.
00:45:59
Speaker
Yes, absolutely. you know it's not like ah It's not like the situation that we're in today with the sad state of affairs of Happy Meal Toys. I will say the new... we're We've been going pretty frequently for the Sanrio Turtles crossovers because A, my 16-year-old, she's a huge fan of Sanrio characters.
00:46:19
Speaker
And for me, I'm a huge fan of Turtles. like The cases are full of all ah the NECA stuff behind me, the NECA Turtle stuff. yeah so um So we went to McDonald's today, and they handed me one i already had, and I was like... Can I switch this for a different one? Perfect.
00:46:36
Speaker
yeah I was doing that with I was doing that with the the Wendy's DC muscle figures because I figured out the code at the bottom told you what color and what um what group you had.
00:46:48
Speaker
So I was sitting at the drive through window like, can I just see the bottom of the box? No, not that one. the ah like I'll take the other one.
00:46:55
Speaker
i got I got frustrated with those because there's way too many, so I just eBayed those. i have But I have them, and they're wonderful. I wanted the little McDonald's. Eric got the one that I wanted.
00:47:07
Speaker
Oh. Oh, the nuggets? Yeah, because that's my that's my food there. Love love me some nuggets. um Dave, is it back to me now? It is.
00:47:18
Speaker
Okay, back to me. All right, so for this is my third pick. All right, so for my third pick, i am going... going to do non-human.
00:47:31
Speaker
And um this is another one that... um Ryan actually alluded to this this character at the beginning. Yeah.
00:47:44
Speaker
This is a an awesome piece. i don't think we ever had this, Dave, but our our cousin Michael definitely had it. um And it is the 1985 Star Wars Return of the Jedi Rancor.
00:48:01
Speaker
Oh, that was a good one. That is a good one. So my my non-human character, the Rancor monster, um I love one of my cherished pieces in my personal collection. i do not have this, but the the vintage collection slash I think it was still Black Series actually at the time.
00:48:24
Speaker
um uh rancor from that that was in that like toys r us exclusive set i love this this character design it's just like to me when i close my eyes and think star wars this is like the first thing that pops into my head oddly enough um and i i love i love the rancor so eric's going eric's going with all the like the big toys here like large now what's yeah cool is i can sit on vehicles everyone else has picked a vehicle
00:48:55
Speaker
Yeah. So my last pick is going to be a vehicle. Okay. I'm ready. Just throwing that out there. um Obviously my turn. So now... I don't know, man. you You just encouraged me and dared me to pick some vehicles for for other characters. You wild cards.
00:49:14
Speaker
Yeah. And there's not any humans still left. That's true. That's true. oo Careful. um But still, I think...
00:49:26
Speaker
I think I got to get a non-human out of the way.
00:49:31
Speaker
And I am like between three different ones.
00:49:40
Speaker
All right, I'm just going to go with this one. i I'm going to I'm going to try to divide the vote here with Eric. And I'm going to go with Kenner Jabba the Hutt.
00:49:52
Speaker
oh
00:49:56
Speaker
this one we definitely had it's still somewhere in somewhere in the basement actually
00:50:04
Speaker
so let me get our image up here oh please don't start playing okay good i don't think it's going to i picked a ah thumbnail from a youtube video instead of an actual very good but it's not playing so yeah there we go so shout to mighty mighty java's collection on youtube but or the the but or a the the kind of barge that he's on or the little like.
00:50:30
Speaker
His little like stand, but. I mean, you get that was what was in there, right? So, OK, but can we just talk about how a goddamn adorable Java looks holding a little baby Java?
00:50:42
Speaker
but smart Yeah, those are. Oh, i just noticed that. Yeah, those are the micro machines. Yep. But the thing the thing that for me was like I it actually scared me when I was very little was like the all the like skulls that were molded into the pit.
00:51:00
Speaker
Interesting. And bones and stuff like that was I thought it was very creepy. But I also thought it was very funny with this this particular release that he's sitting on top of his own sh trap door. Yeah, I was just thinking about that.
00:51:14
Speaker
It's like, i get it. Like, it's the most Kenner thing ever, like that this is the play set. But like the fact that he's sitting on top of his own effectively doom. But also it's like the least effective trap door of all time because it swings open this way. Yeah.
00:51:34
Speaker
I just say i love it. he He has to be like, he just takes a quick drag of his hookah and like slithers off and then it's like, come on over here. Just stand kind of on the edge. Yeah. Yeah. No, no. Closer. Come closer. Never, never mind these doors that are barn doors that are going to swing open. hit you in the face. And catapult you to your safety.
00:51:55
Speaker
Good pick, Dave. Solid. Thank you. Ryan, you get back to back again, my friend. Yeah, this is tough. Um... So again, I'm going to have to appeal the judges on the legality of this one too because I'm not interested in competing with Secret Wars and I'm not the biggest DC fan or like um not like expert on that. so So the cover is kind of bare for superheroes. So I'm going to appeal to the Marvel Comics G.I. Joe.
00:52:28
Speaker
imprints that was definitely in the 80s and try to squeeze in Snake Eyes V2 1985 into my superhero. Oh my god. That's a solid one. I think they're superheroes too. They are real American heroes.
00:52:42
Speaker
Yeah. right yeah That's sweet. Yeah, and you went with the right one, too. The V2 is where it's at. I'm 100% behind that.
00:52:55
Speaker
Yeah. That was the Visor one, right? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. with i her Yeah, too. Yep, and it came with with Wolf. Right. My loophole I was researching was like, oh I'm going to pick the Ninja Turtles superheroes. I thought that's what you were doing at first. But then they're 1992 1993, so i was like, oh Oh, I thought you, I, I would say they count as superhero anyway.
00:53:21
Speaker
They do, but they're, you mean just like the regular turtles? No, I think you can, no, they're just the heroes at one point. Yeah, like it was ah Leo and, oh dot sorry, it was Donnie as Batman.
00:53:32
Speaker
like oh yeah. yeah yeah man And then um some two other non-Turtles, I don't think Raphael and, Donnie was Spock. Wasn't Donnie Spock? No, it was a four-pack. There were two villains in it, too. Yeah, it was like a weird four-pack set, but it was in the 90s, so I kind ruled that out. But yes, they were superhero. Aren't they superhero turtles in Australia or the UK or something? They weren't ninjas for some reason. But anyway, so that is my superhero. Teenage Mutant and Hero Turtles. There you Hero Turtles.
00:54:09
Speaker
Yep. And so so my fourth round pick, to start off the fourth round, I'm going to go into the wrestling category. And for me, I didn't start watching wrestling really until the So i like I wasn't into wrestling during the Hulk Hogan kind of um Macho Man era, so I felt disingenuous to try to pick an LJN.
00:54:31
Speaker
i was considering, ah because Eric tipped me off, he was like, oh, Remco made AWA figures, so I was like, I'll look this up. I have no idea what that was. There was a Shawn Michaels AWA figure. i didn't I didn't even realize he started there. but i had that.
00:54:48
Speaker
That's awesome. That was before he was the heartbreak kid though. So again, so I want to, and Eric was talking about the Wendy's DC muscle figures, but I'm actually just going to go the original muscle figures that Mattel made. And I think I had some of them again. I'm not the biggest expert on it, but it's such a, it's such a fun aesthetic and lots of companies have done kind of modern takes on that. I think they've come back.
00:55:16
Speaker
several forms, and so I'm going to squeeze that into the wrestler category. There's like 5,000 of them. Pick one. I don't know. I am so mad right now because that was my pick for wrestling. Were you going straight up Kaniku, man?
00:55:30
Speaker
I absolutely was. All right.
00:55:35
Speaker
That's rough, bro. I thought that one was... I thought I was going to be safe there. He was on my list, too, by the way.
00:55:44
Speaker
you know these are Yeah, these are awesome. yeah they The Kanikuman muscle figures. Also, an odd lot purchase in Bridgeport, Connecticut. that was There's so many of those there. Amazing pick.
00:56:01
Speaker
You jerk. Nice. Back to me. Back to you. Yeah. back to me back to you yeah All right, I'm going to put my wild card out there.
00:56:16
Speaker
And I have a couple that were on there. But I am ah this one's going to be a judge's decision one. OK, but.
00:56:27
Speaker
I thought if we were doing like actual physical toys and not figures. I was going to say so remember, it has to be either a figure or a vehicle. So remember that. So this is the only figure figure the or idea thereof that exists for this device, which would be the Nintendo Entertainment System, Rob the Robot.
00:56:52
Speaker
I know I'm from Smash Brothers. Does that count as a figure? o Who are the judges? I think we everyone else need we need to just decide whether or not that counts as a figure.
00:57:04
Speaker
How passionate do you feel about this, Dave? um Literally just throwing it out there as hopefully like this is a draft winning. that's not like yeah that's not That's not convincing enough. i'm yeah i'm gonna That's a no for me. yeah um that' no angle um That's no for me, dog.
00:57:21
Speaker
it's I mean, here's the thing, right? like it's Look at it this way. it's definitely Rob's definitely not a vehicle, right? Definitely not a vehicle. 100%, not a vehicle. Technically...
00:57:32
Speaker
I mean, he's got a head, he's got arms, he's got legs. I mean, you could play with him like an action figure, but o that wasn't his intended purpose. Okay. Fair. He's a video game controller.
00:57:44
Speaker
So, yeah. All right. So then going to go... um Oh, Eric, did we just break his heart? you No, no, no, no, no. no no no no no just in your shoulders A little bit. oh this is cool that was That was like that was like kind of like a potential like secret weapon there, to be honest. Yeah, this is this is cutthroat business, man.
00:58:10
Speaker
some but Like when ah who trick who somebody wanted to do super soaker last time for the toy line and it ruled. That was like, yes, that was my super soaker.
00:58:21
Speaker
George. So Jordan of Toy Shows fame picked for his wild card um when we did ninety ah ninety s toy lines. We didn't specify that it had to be action figures, which is why the rules specified action figures this time, because he i picked super soaker, which was an amazing sleeper pick for a wild card. But we we wanted to try to keep some guardrails on it this time.
00:58:47
Speaker
So I'm going to go then with one my ultimate like Odd Lot toy, toy line, where I think I picked up this entire toy line at Odd Lot.
00:58:58
Speaker
OK. And it was something I was a huge fan of. It's something I wanted so bad, um something I had the tapes of. I'm going with Mattel, Captain Power, and the Soldiers of the Future, Captain Power as my wild card.
00:59:14
Speaker
I like that. That was my number two choice behind Rob. If I could get away with Rob, cool. But if not, it was going to be Captain Power. God, this figure this figure got so much play in our house.
00:59:28
Speaker
And I had the VHSs, and I had the... It was the best. Yeah. And then if you watch the TV show, the TV show also had the playability with it.
00:59:41
Speaker
I used to love that. Like and it was definitely not for children, but I guess it was like a charging station. Yeah, that was where he chart. That was where they got their armor. They went on the thing and like on the show, they armored up this thing right here.
00:59:55
Speaker
This thing. Yeah, the power on.
00:59:58
Speaker
And they would say power on and get their armor. i loved I loved this figure. the The gold vac metal treatment, though. I wonder. i wonder where ours is. I wonder if this because it's the molded gold plastic. I wonder if this suffers from that gold plastic syndrome where like the figures from the 80s that were cast in the gold plastic just like turn to dust.
01:00:20
Speaker
I don't know. I mean, this one seems to be holding up pretty well. So and it's only five. It's only five dollars and thirty nine cents loose.
01:00:30
Speaker
35 bucks for a sealed one actually is not bad. Yeah. Cool card art too. Good pick, Dave. Solid Thank you. And for some reason they decided to make a Barbie movie. I mean, you had Captain Power right there.
01:00:45
Speaker
Right there.
01:00:48
Speaker
I'd love to see it. like I don't know how you'd figure out to do a revival of it at at this point, but it was a cool sci-fi show. It was. Um, all right. So that sends it over to me, right? It does.
01:01:03
Speaker
um I can't believe this is still on the board. Um, so I'm going to take it before it's not, uh, my wild card pick.
01:01:15
Speaker
I'm going to leave. see Save my, my wrestling one for last. My wild card is from a line that nobody has taken anything from yet, which really blows my mind. um And it's one of the most iconic toy lines I think of all time. So I am going with ah Mattel, sticking sticking with Mattel.
01:01:36
Speaker
um We are headed to the fine year of 1982. And I am going to take Skeletor. Masters of the Universe Skeletor is my my wild card ah pick.
01:01:51
Speaker
i To this day, I still love the way that this figure was you know designed. I love the the yeah the yellow skull. um Yeah, I love not the biggest Masters of the Universe person, personally. I was a little bit too um being born in 88. This was a a little past it by the time I was getting toys for myself, but I played with all of Dave's.
01:02:16
Speaker
So, yeah. My wild card pick, Skeletor. Well done, man. I saw somebody in like a Skeletor punk shirt at Bouncing Souls last weekend and I wanted to take a picture of it, but i also didn't want to be a weirdo.
01:02:32
Speaker
I'm really excited for my bull airs, my Skeletor bull airs that should be coming eventually. However their process works.
01:02:42
Speaker
um All right, so that sends it to... It's me. so these are These are my last two picks too. this is a So I haven't done superhero and I haven't done non-human yet.
01:02:54
Speaker
So I'm going to... With superhero, I was kind of like, do I pick something for Toy Biz? Do I pick from... like The real Ghostbusters toy line was so awesome.
01:03:05
Speaker
But I'm going to throw something else out there. I don't know if a lot of people remember this one, but LJN did a toy line called the Bionic Six. It was a toy line for a TV show. It had a very catchy theme song.
01:03:17
Speaker
It was about a family. And ah I had Jack, the dad. And it was a cool figure because the thing weighed like five pounds, like at least to an eight-year-old, it was like five pounds.
01:03:32
Speaker
But it was it had clear cast parts, it had die cast parts. like It was it's just a cool toy. It was just cool. And then I had the bad guy, which was just like weird dude in like a custodian suit. And he had like a red hat or whatever.
01:03:47
Speaker
But I had Jack. And his arm, his left arm immediately broke like the forearm immediately broke off. So the funny thing, until you pulled that image up, I didn't remember him having a ah red hand. I only had the other part of him, but it was just a cool figure.
01:04:03
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome. um' na this is That's the first I've seen this. Yeah, this is the first time i've ever seen this too. It would get chucked in the playroom. I had a little brother two years younger than me. And if that got thrown and you got hit, it was it was there was blood and tears easily.
01:04:20
Speaker
It was such a dense thing. It was like someone said, how do we make Hot Wheels into an action figure? LJN and any LJ and toys like you could do damage.
01:04:32
Speaker
LJN overall was really great at causing pain, whether it was like their figures would hurt you or their video games would hurt your soul like they they were very good at making very memorably painful things. I just I just remember one time, ah Eric, you crushed mom with Andre the Giant on accident.
01:04:54
Speaker
He's like, picture this little like two year old boy, just like, look, I have and come on. Come play with me. And he's just like bashing her with Andre the giant.
01:05:04
Speaker
So I found out years and years later that I gave so i gave my mom a black eye with that with with Andre. Like, legit, like, gave her a black eye. I found out years and years later of her telling the story over and over again. you know, when I was little, like, it was, like, a thing we all laughed about.
01:05:19
Speaker
As adults, she told the story again. She was like, yeah. And then I got pulled aside by h r at work to see if I was getting beaten at home. And i was wow oh. Yeah. Wow. Yeah.
01:05:30
Speaker
no it was just it was your toddler yeah also i just want to say that the packaging treatment on this reminds me of the saturday night live um those and the the shorts from like the 90s the ambiguously gay duo it looks like that art style from yeah not robertber michael illustrate yes it's not great illustrations it's pretty fun It's pretty funny, but yeah, I don't know. That one stuck out to me. and Again, could have done any Thundercats or anything, but this is what I wanted. And then for my final pick, I am going to take it back to my favorite toy line of all time, the Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
01:06:07
Speaker
And since the turtles are off the board, my second favorite after the turtles was Ace Duck. And the reason he was my favorite was because, first of all, he looked like Hal Jordan as a duck.
01:06:22
Speaker
yeah the He had like the flight jacket and the hat. And and if any most kids of the 80s, I would think, grew up on the Disney ducks. great You had DuckTales. You had Darkwing Duck. you had like There was so much duck stuff coming out at that time. And this was like an action figure of a cool-looking duck.
01:06:41
Speaker
So yeah, that one's going to be, and he had the egg grenades and, and a gun and which was like, wow, he has a, just a gun. Like it's just a sidearm.
01:06:54
Speaker
They didn't even come up with something fantasy. It was just a sidearm and the wings, the whole thing, just hands down. of my favorite, one of my favorite turtles figures. They crammed so much in that bubble. Look at that. Look at all the stuff that's in that tiny bubble.
01:07:08
Speaker
Yeah, the wings, the the bandolier, the eggs on the sprue. like it's it was just It was solid. That's great. So that's my final pick.
01:07:20
Speaker
All right. So Dave, do you want to give us a quick recap of Jason's picks since we've closed out? Yes, sure. So since Jason has closed out, we have Wrestling Champs CG as his wrestler.
01:07:35
Speaker
We have ah the Kenner at real Ghostbusters Ecto-1 as the vehicle. um The California Raisins Blue Sunglasses Raisin as the wild card.
01:07:47
Speaker
um The Bionic Six character Jack is or no, I'm sorry. California Raisins are the non-human. No, that's wild card. Yeah, you were right. Wild card. yeah Jack is the superhero.
01:07:59
Speaker
ye Yep. And Ace Duck is your non-human.
01:08:06
Speaker
All right. Feeling pretty good about that. Feeling pretty good. that is is that is a solid That is a solid team there, Jason. So that brings it back to me for my final pick. That brings it back to you.
01:08:20
Speaker
um Geez. All right. So I have a decision to make. All right. a There's a lot riding on this, Eric.
01:08:33
Speaker
You may get disowned if you don't close this out strong. You know, just talked about this. You're on Wrestler, right? Yeah, yeah, Wrestler. We literally just talked about this this figure.
01:08:45
Speaker
um It was on my list. i I have a personal connection with Is it Andre? It is 1,000% LJN, Andre the Giant, specifically the... ah andre the giant um specifically the The long haired variant. Cause that was the one that we had.
01:09:05
Speaker
um i mean, listen, he's, he's, he's, he's the, what the eighth wonder of the world and the world? He's one of the most important wrestlers that has ever existed. um You know, if there's, I'm a firm believer that if there is no Andre, the giant to body slam, there is an and drop the leg on, there is no, ah you know, WrestleMania moment. And yeah, I,
01:09:29
Speaker
unfortunately you know died a little too young but uh you know left a giant legacy and um anybody want a peanut that's my uh princess frag is one of my absolute favorite movies and it's because of andre the giant yep yeah that's why i wanted to see it when i was a kid so yeah and then i saw and then and then the kids in like a walter payton jersey so i was yeah you yeah here
01:09:56
Speaker
All right, so I'm left with vehicle. And let me just do it. I'll just do a quick recap. Oh, yeah, let me do the recap of Eric. We have Secret Wars Black Suit Spider-Man as your superhero.
01:10:09
Speaker
We have the Hasbro G.I. Joe USS Flag as the vehicle. the return of the Jedi Rancor as your non-human. Skeletor is your wild card from Mattel Motu.
01:10:24
Speaker
And LJ and Andre is your wrestler.
01:10:29
Speaker
i'm like I'm liking my team. I'm liking my team. It's good. um Heaviest combined like weight. It's a flag alone. Yes, I win by volume.
01:10:42
Speaker
Yeah, Eric wins by volume. Oh, that's so I'm actually shocked. None of my vehicles came off of like I have. I have not removed a vehicle from my list. um So.
01:10:58
Speaker
I am at a conundrum of do I pick my favorite one or do I pick what I think is the best toy? Your favorite, man. Pick your favorite. before you close this out, right Ryan, you've got one pick left, right?
01:11:10
Speaker
Yeah. As well. So what is what is your category? I'm just... I just want to... I'm curious. what What do you have to fill? Wild card. Wild card. Okay. All right.
01:11:21
Speaker
Not helpful. Okay. Go with your heart, Dave. Follow your heart, Dave. You've got a vehicle and a wild card. Okay. All right. Chase the dreams, buddy. Um...
01:11:34
Speaker
All right, so I'm going to go with what I think was kind of the mixture of both. my One of my favorite ones to play with and um the vehicle. And I hope that Series 1 does well enough to get Series 2 here.
01:11:54
Speaker
on the on the comeback, because I would want this to be part of series two. know it's one of my favorite mask vehicles of all time. I'm going with Kenner Mask Jackhammer.
01:12:06
Speaker
It was the one that always worked the best. It lasted like this thing, whereas other ones broke. This one never broke. It was the best, most put together thing. It had the top that popped off the truck to be the extra gunner.
01:12:20
Speaker
um The yeah, the grill came down. The front was the. um was the like shield for the windshield you had i mean the guy in purple with the eye patch was cool like it was what a name what a name on him cliff dagger cliff dagger yeah what is his mask though because it kind of looks like blue clay face like what what's happening yeah it looks like um like mario brothers like it's like the little uh goomba
01:12:52
Speaker
he's the He's the original version of the not impressed emoji. Is what
01:13:00
Speaker
that a Bronco? right That is pretty cool. It's just like a SUV. Yeah, and shout out Loyal Subjects. They're doing an awesome job with these. By the way, we we got we got a chance to see some production samples. This hands down was like my favorite.
01:13:20
Speaker
As opposed to... the motorcycle which went everywhere and that thing held up well to like this car like would fly would have a fly off stuff like I wished it was ah it actually wasn't it. I wish it was like the team mask vehicle, but it's it's a Venom vehicle. So.
01:13:39
Speaker
Yeah.
01:13:42
Speaker
All right, Dave, so run us down your what your um your recap. So I have LJN Macho Man Randy Savage as my wrestling figure. um i have super Kenner Superpowers Superman as the superhero.
01:13:56
Speaker
ah Kenner Star Wars Return of the Jedi Jabba the Hutt as my non-human Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. Captain Power as my wild card and the Masked Jackhammer.
01:14:11
Speaker
as my vehicle all right and that leaves us with brian's final pick to close us out here all right so i thought i was going to just call to jason's approach to start this whole thing of like things i love the most but then i kind of started going more broad of like general appeal so there's some you know i'm not going to pander to some of the ip some of the lines that haven't been selected yet because i'm not super big into things like, you know, Thundercats, Voltron, like stuff like that.
01:14:41
Speaker
I'm glad Mask made it on though in the second to last pick. So my heart is torn between Battle Beasts and I'm going shy away from Battle Beasts even though you don't know i love them.
01:14:52
Speaker
And I'm going to go, this is kind of a deeper cut, but again, remember, as kids, all of us go through a phase of loving dinosaurs, and many of us will continue to love dinosaurs forever.
01:15:03
Speaker
So I'm going with the play school, definitely dinosaurs. Ultrasaurus, which I had honestly not thought of until we did this thing on toying around Kevin's stream a couple of years back of like, get a picture of yourself opening a toy on Christmas. So I asked my mom, hey, can you send me a picture you know of this sort? And she sent me one and it's me with this toy and this huge box. It's this really, it's the Ultrasaurus.
01:15:29
Speaker
It comes with a little caveman and like a little saddle type kind of thing that he can ride. And so I'm going to eventually get one as an adult now to to reacquire that because I clearly Oh my god.
01:15:40
Speaker
This thing is huge. Hold up. That was like the biggest in the line I think. Hold up. But if you just go if you just go look through the line like if you're not familiar with it, this was like before Jurassic Park, right? Yet many years. but Whoa. yeah Whoa, bro. They came in little comic book. That's cool.
01:15:58
Speaker
So, yeah, definitely dinosaurs for me. um Taking it back to when we were kids. And, yeah, the only dino, the dino representation here on the list. Look at this. That's awesome.
01:16:12
Speaker
look at this I was all about i was all about Dino Riders during my dinosaur face, like the idea of being able to put like armor and weapons and stuff on them and they could ride it.
01:16:23
Speaker
I don't remember this one at all. This that's pretty cool. dude This is like this would be this would fly today. Like bring it back. Yeah. Well, that's awesome.

Nostalgia in Toy Collecting

01:16:36
Speaker
And I would tell to Mattel's credit, the Jurassic World line that they've been doing. Is really good. They have done some, yeah, they've been doing some pretty enormous dinosaurs. But not as colorful as this. It's pretty fun.
01:16:48
Speaker
And they've got like the Flintstones, like. Mm-hmm. like carrier caravan thing on his back. That's really. Yeah, that was exactly the vibe that I it's like the um there they're they're the construction vehicles.
01:17:01
Speaker
yeah Yeah, like Fred could go the back and down the tail. But it also like the caveman also reminds me of that. Like, oh, what was that Nintendo game? Chuck Rock?
01:17:13
Speaker
Oh, yeah. The one that was the one that was on. um They always played it on Nick Arcade. Yeah. not bonk but like there was one he was a caveman chuck rock i think was his name yeah ryan you definitely need to go back and get yourself one of these 100 there's a couple of loose ones on ebay i've seen but they they are missing either the caveman or that little riding top piece so i i need to get like a complete one because want to recreate that wow
01:17:46
Speaker
All right, Dave, give us give us the rundown of ah of Ryan's picks. So we have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raphael um Optimus Prime as the vehicle Transformers Optimus Prime.
01:18:04
Speaker
We have um superhero G.I. Joe Snake Eyes version two. We have for wrestling the Muscle Kaniku Man.
01:18:15
Speaker
We're just Kaniku, man. And then for um the wild card play school, definitely dinosaurs, ultrasaurus, which just learning about for the first time is really cool.
01:18:28
Speaker
Yeah. Today, today, years old, today, years old. But it's funny, Ryan, you were talking about like, oh, I don't want to pander to think like I had literally like there were so many things where I was between like in non-humans.
01:18:41
Speaker
I was between a battle beast, Jabba, two turtles and Mumra. Like I did not know. I had starting lineups in my wild card like. Yeah, starting line. So my the thing that I had the Toy Biz Batwing in my vehicles, that was the that was what I was between the the jackhammer on the back. I had that one too.
01:19:04
Speaker
Yeah, that battery was so good. The Batmobile was fine. The fact that the attack shell was like so breakable. the most fragile. Yeah. And it was a and it was a, you know, it was a Shriner car because it was all like open wheel like it as opposed to the Batwing, which was just spot on, like just and it had they it had to have it. My brother Batwing was awesome, too, because it had the handle.
01:19:27
Speaker
Yeah, which was really cool. There was like hand and it was like trigger. Yeah. And it worked the it was a great play feature. So Ryan didn't have a rockets on it, too.
01:19:38
Speaker
It had rockets and had the claw thing. Yeah. pinchers I use, I use that feature for my bat wing when I did superpowers. I wanted that too. was like, it's just a fun thing. So Ryan actually screwed up my wrestling pick twice.
01:19:52
Speaker
He got me twice. So one, he took muscle, which I thought for sure, no one else is going to think about that no um in terms of that category. Um,
01:20:04
Speaker
The second pick you screwed me up on was when you took Snake Eyes because my number one pick for wrestler was I was going to take G.I. Joe, Sergeant Slaughter. As my wrestling pick to get G.I. Joe on the list. But to your point, there's no way that people are going to if people are looking at it categorically, no one is going to vote.
01:20:26
Speaker
If there there's G.I. Joe people, no one is going to pick. Sergeant Slaughter over Snake Eyes in like a head to head vote on that. So if that's a deciding factor for somebody, I needed to shift my focus off of that was one of my vehicles.
01:20:41
Speaker
Yeah, too. That was on my vehicle. My vehicle list was there was longer than it needed to be. um yeah as was mine did anyone have the return of the did anyone have the return of the jedi speeder bike on their vehicle now because that was pretty that was pretty close i still have mine it's just fun like you can just constantly explode it like you put the thing on push the button it explodes it's a good one my top three vehicles were the flag which obviously is when i went with the at-at um Which is again, it was one I was surprised that no one went into. So you're going like a Normo vehicles the whole way. and
01:21:17
Speaker
And the party wagon, man. Yeah. And the party wagon and the pizza thrower. Just because I had that toy. That that was my favorite. I don't even think I had the party wagon. yeah Was the party wagon in 89? I feel like the door always broke though. So it wasn't like fun. Yeah.
01:21:37
Speaker
that that's mine right there. I still have it for when i was a kid. Still has all the bombs, still has everything. Like that's my party wagon right there. Yep. With my original turtles in there.
01:21:48
Speaker
Like I told the kid, we had this like conversation about what would you save? Cause I have so many collectibles in the garage and around the house. Like what would I save in a fire, you know, besides the kids and the pets or whatever.

Themed Toy Discussions

01:21:59
Speaker
And I was like my vintage turtles. Cause that's the thing I have the most emotional attachment to. Like that's, I just throw them in a party wagon and run out of the door. ah of The wedding photos, whatever, it's fine. But the the party wagon and the turtles have got to My family has also knows the answer to this because, you know, the office is crammed with stuff, is grab the sail barge because...
01:22:24
Speaker
whatever is in the has lab, the sail barge and whatever is inside of it, just take pick up the whole thing and go. That's that's it. It's got enough in there. But that is. Wow.
01:22:34
Speaker
You might not make it. Isn't the sail barge? Yeah, it was big. but Matt, ah my littlest is not carrying it. Maddie could definitely pick it up, though. She's she's got those those dancer slash aerobic muscles. She's she's good. She could. cra I was going to say, watching the kids try to run out with that, it would be like entertaining yeah it would be unfortunate because i'd know what's up but like it would be funny watching them run with it you should just do a drill to to see what it would go how it would go all right drill kids all right everyone so we get the pets i got the party wagon i'm out of here i almost said ryan which battle beast not he grabbed the awards i'm sorry i was did you have a specific battle beast or
01:23:21
Speaker
No, so like my thing with Battle Beasts is I definitely had a bunch, but like I'm looking at the visual checklist and I'm not confident of like that of which ones i actually had. So like I don't I have to go like physically look to see if they're in a bucket somewhere. But one of my old times favorite is the deer with the drill hand.
01:23:39
Speaker
OK, well, their names are your stock copywriting because they're all like all alert alliterative. And so like I was I was jotting down some of my favorites were Killer Koala. Pillager Pig and Rowdy Rooster were the three that I was looking at today.
01:23:53
Speaker
i I seem to remember a triceratops. The triceratops is cool, too. i I can't think of its name. Did they have a cartoon or anything? I do not remember these at all.
01:24:07
Speaker
ah They're really cool. Are they articulated? Yeah. the arms yeah Just the arms and I think the heads. The head, yeah. But the other two non-humans I had were Usagi, Yojimbo, and Baxter.
01:24:21
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Those are good, too. Yeah, I had Bebop on the non-human list. I had Jabba the Hutt, but that, obviously, you took. um Yeah. I had Hooded hooded Cobra Commander, the mail-away, for my my wild card.
01:24:37
Speaker
See, that would have been non-human, too. Could have been non-human, too. He was once a amaze man. He was once a man. Yeah. um Yeah. And then I had I had Kenner Superpowers Green Lantern was my backup. If if somebody had taken somebody took 89 toy biz, 89 Batman with the the belt on a belt on a string.
01:24:58
Speaker
um If somebody had taken Batman and Spider-Man off the table, would have it would have gone to Hal Jordan. It's so funny. After after Rob the Robot and Captain Power, it was just sports. It was athletes.
01:25:13
Speaker
I didn't even think about starting to meet. Daryl Strawberry, Michael Jordan, and Jim McMahon were on my list. So, fun fact, the wrestling category was very nearly just sports to kind of broaden it a little bit. um But we ended up just sticking with wrestling.
01:25:33
Speaker
Yeah. I had Lawrence Taylor with his hands constantly blocking. Like I had that one And I had Don Mattingly, which I still have my Don Mattingly and Cal Ripken Jr. And those are the only three starting lineup figures that I had. And I still have Cal and I don't know what happened to poor Lawrence Taylor, but those were, those were so fun. Life happened to Lawrence Taylor. that's i i love when you put their arms down too. They just look like they're shrugging.
01:26:00
Speaker
Like if you go all the way down, it's just like, they're like this. Yeah, well, now he can do so. Yeah, it's true. He can eat. Also wrestler, Lawrence Taylor, right? Yeah. That's true. That would have been a fun... Didn't LT show up on G.I. Joe as well? Fridge. The fridge did, right? LT didn't too? No, Roddy Piper,
01:26:24
Speaker
Slaughter, and Fridge. They made a Roddy Piper figure, but he was never on... He was in the comics. Yeah. Piper. Oh. Yeah, he's a he's a Cobra. It was he it was he'll Piper.

Reviving the Battle Beasts
