propergolfsociety: Okay. Hey, everybody. Robert. Buck and Bradley here. We are the three founders of the Proper Golf Society. um Perhaps you've heard of us. Um, Against our...
propergolfsociety: Better judgment. We decided to do a golf podcast. so um Rather than drone on and on in an intro that I don't even know how to do, this may be the last intro I ever do, to be honest with you. We're just going to dive right in. We thought it'd be fun for our first episode, since we're just kind of trying this out, to have ah our audience on Instagram, who most of whom are going to watch this or listen to it, and follow us.
propergolfsociety: uh tell us a little bit about who we are but what better way or what more pgs style way to talk about who we are than to share stuff about our golf clubs so um some of you guys might have seen on instagram i put up a post not too long ago uh of this golf bag that i called my vibes bag um and so The idea of the vibes bag was to put together a set of clubs I mean you could do it in your head or you can physically do it I decided to go all the way and put mine together of a bag of clubs that Uh...
propergolfsociety: represents a certain period of time in your golfing life that brings back the heavy nostalgia and all the feelings and all that stuff so um my bag and i'm gonna start off i'm gonna let butt go and then we're gonna let brad go uh my bag of course was a ping l8 red white and black okay um and uh i'm just gonna quickly go through the clubs that were in it talk about why it was special to me and then we'll go from there so um
propergolfsociety: Red wine, black ping, L8, obviously. Single strap. ah I have a 975D driver. That was my driver, you know, in the in the mid -90s to the late 90s. This bag was supposed to be from 1998. And then I had a PT -17.
propergolfsociety: Three would, four would, however you classify that. And then I had a set of MP14s, like two, three pitching wedge. And I had a... uh cleveland uh 588 and i had a voki uh that was my 60 and then i had a voki 52 degree and i had a ping answer putter and um that bag represented a time for me when uh when i was young and yearning to play better golf and aspiring to better golf and at this small kind of redneck country club that I grew up in. um This was a time when I got a chance to play with the older, better players in the club on the weekend or in the dog fight. And I mentioned all this on Instagram, so I'll kind of cut myself off here. but um
propergolfsociety: It was a particularly... ah meaningful and eventful time in my golfing life and it felt uh like the appropriate thing to do. So that was my vibes bag. It got a pretty good reception. It's also Bulldog themed. You can see it back here behind me. There's my, there's my head cover, um, uh, being a UGA grad, but, um, yeah, so that was special to me. Um, and, uh, I'm curious, Buck and Brad, uh, what you guys are thinking for your vibes bags. Buck, you want to take a crack at it?
Buck Bryant: Sure. Well, my vibes bag has not been. completed. So this is going to be an in your head vibes bag.
propergolfsociety: This is the as you fall asleep at night vibes bag.
Buck Bryant: But...
Brad: decrease the six please
Buck Bryant: This is what I lay in bed at night thinking about like if I put together the bag that would bring me the most enjoyment What would it look like? So. The... The carrying vessel would obviously be a Ping L8, but I won't.
Buck Bryant: The red. with white letters. I'm still on the hunt for that bag. One day I will find it, you know, like. like Wayne and Wayne's World. One day you you will be mine.
Brad: So you've never had that bag?
propergolfsociety: but
Buck Bryant: Oh, yes, you will be mine.
Brad: Boom.
Buck Bryant: um ah So that's the bag. Uh, driver. 975D. It's Probably the... to the best looking driver. I think it's like the goat of drivers, honestly. Looks the best. Feels great. It's classic. it checks all the boxes.
Buck Bryant: But...
propergolfsociety: Shafts. Chef.
Buck Bryant: I'm now... I'm going to go with a little bit more modernized shaft. I want a ProForce V2 in it. No. Not to be confused with the ProForce Gold. You know, the one I want is black.
propergolfsociety: We would never, we would never confuse a pro force gold and a pro force.
Buck Bryant: Well some out there would. I'm just trying to clarify. Um, So that was with a v2 shaft now 3 -wood. I know most people would expect me to say the PT.
Buck Bryant: I love it it's one of my favorite clubs of all time But when I'm thinking of like... It's pure enjoyment. enjoyment I am going to go with the Titleist 906 F2 PT.
propergolfsociety: Nice.
Buck Bryant: I've had two of those in my in my life. They're just... One of the best three woods I've ever had. um Also with a ProForce V2. And. I want to go 5 -wood. I'm going with a sonar tech.
Buck Bryant: But... um I might jazz that up. I might just do something crazy and put like a...
Buck Bryant: Like a... ventist Or like, oh no, a graphite design like D .I. Shack. You know, like old, old head with like modern shaft. irons I'm probably going to go MP33s just because I love them so much.
Buck Bryant: um They feel great, they look great. they're just a classic blade uh Dynamic Gold X100s. Wages? Old wedges are cool. But new ages are better.
Buck Bryant: I'm probably just going to go with some new Bokies.
Brad: Yeah.
Buck Bryant: Rock those out. 60 degree, 54 degree. And I'll also do a Vokey pitching wedge. Now putters.
propergolfsociety: when when you told me When you told me what you paid for that new wedge that's on the way, I almost lost my mind.
Buck Bryant: And you know what? I was even more furious with what I paid for that wedge when the guy posted the Edwin Watts from 1998. and you can get a Cleveland 588. Like the raw one for 80 bucks? like What are we doing?
Buck Bryant: We used to be a proper country. We've lost the plot, you know Uh, Potter.
Buck Bryant: I would probably go. Amen. I'm going to go with the old Scotty Cameron. Newport II oil can.
propergolfsociety: alright
Buck Bryant: And that is my...
Brad: Oh.
Buck Bryant: Got it? It was my first new Scotty Cameron. and I still have it. Still love it, still play it quite a bit. Couldn't imagine. gaming anything better. So that's what I would put in the bag. That's my That's my vibes bag.
propergolfsociety: That's your vibes bag. Okay, you got like a name for this kit or anything, or is it just Buck's Vibes Bag?
Buck Bryant: No, no. A bag with no name. you know that's it's
Brad: is
Buck Bryant: It's just it is what it is
propergolfsociety: I walked through the valley with a bag with no name. Alright.
Buck Bryant: That's right. i can i can I can play that song. I got the guitar. It's only two chords.
propergolfsociety: Can you?
Buck Bryant: Yeah.
propergolfsociety: I didn't know we were going to make it him.
Brad: Oh, man.
propergolfsociety: Isn't that band America? Isn't that what they're called?
Buck Bryant: America, yeah
Brad: I've got my guitar over there too. I can play it too.
propergolfsociety: if If we want to stop the podcast.
Brad: Robert, you got a guitar?
propergolfsociety: Yeah, let's stop.
Buck Bryant: Look at all.
propergolfsociety: Mine's over here. we We'll stop the pod. and play an America rendition of Horse With No Name. about being L .A., so I'm sure that will garner lots of new fans.
Brad: Yeah, you just need to you just need to teach it to me. If it's only two chords, I can do that. I'll pull that off.
Buck Bryant: It's really easy.
Brad: Yeah.
Buck Bryant: You only need two fingers.
propergolfsociety: That's good
Buck Bryant: for the two chords.
Brad: Oh nice!
propergolfsociety: We were to you know, we were debating like intro outro music. I think it needs to be a horse to no name I think we've settled on it now. We're good
Buck Bryant: Okay. Yeah, that works for me.
propergolfsociety: All right, Brad, you're up, man.
Buck Bryant: As long as we don't have to pay any royalties.
propergolfsociety: Tell us about it.
Brad: Alright, vibes bag. So... When I made the high school golf team, our bags were pink huffers.
propergolfsociety: Yep.
Brad: And so I'm going to go ping Hofer all the way because that was like such a. monumental time in my life when i made the high school golf team in ninth grade it was uh I was playing terrible and then I had a... It was just the JV team, but then I...
Brad: I had ah a nice day. I shot 42, which was good for me as a nice. 14 year old boy. Um... I guess out I was 15. I don't know. So shot 42 ended up making the team.
Brad: um So, and I got a blin a blue huffer with that.
propergolfsociety: Nice.
Brad: Did I catch? So I still have it at home in my basement.
propergolfsociety: Did you owe it back to the school and kept it or were you given the bag?
Brad: Um... Uhhh... Well, technically, so technically... i' This is a This is a story for another day. But senior year of high school.
Brad: If you made the team again. You. Get the bag.
propergolfsociety: I got it.
Brad: So. So if you're a senior, you kept the bag. Well, I called the Shanks my senior year of high school. I missed.
propergolfsociety: Oh, no.
Brad: I missed the the the varsity cut at the time. I still would have made JV. didn't allow seniors to make JV. Missed the varsity cut. Bye, shot. And did not make the team.
Brad: And then the next week I went out and shot 36. With a... Just playing again because the shanks were gone.
propergolfsociety: Of course they were.
Brad: But so that that was a terrible terrible moment for me as a as a young lad Bye. I'm over it now. I'm 40. I'm a man. so
propergolfsociety: You're still you definitely still not thinking about it.
Brad: We're good to go.
propergolfsociety: Definitely not thinking.
Brad: Yeah, I'm not thinking about it. I'm not mad about it at all. but ah
propergolfsociety: ah
Brad: Yeah, so that would be my bag, of course, would be the puffer, just because it was just a monumental... big deal it was like my first nice bag i guess like ah everything before that was just something from sam's or costco or something i think i mean nothing super not nothing that felt
propergolfsociety: Yeah.
Brad: fancy, you know. as like ah through middle school.
propergolfsociety: Right.
Brad: Driver, I would go with a 983K. Tideless 983K with a graphalloy blue shaft.
propergolfsociety: Oh yeah.
propergolfsociety: Yeah.
Buck Bryant: thank you
Brad: I thought that was the coolest thing ever I remember just smacking that thing back when I could hit the ball a long way Um... I love that golf club. I'm still pissed I let go of it because I'm sure the face was...
Brad: Just beat out enough to be just hot enough that if you centered it, that ball is going to go. that That thing's not passing any... ah Any tests on the PGA tour? What's that? What's that?
Brad: thing the uh
propergolfsociety: ct CT or whatever they call it.
Brad: Yeah, CT, yeah, whatever it is. Yeah, whatever it is.
propergolfsociety: Yeah. Yeah.
Brad: It's not going to pass anything with that club. Um... Then ah I would go for 16 and a half degree. Tideless, what, 975F? With a...
propergolfsociety: yep
Brad: That red. um What's that red share?
propergolfsociety: The pro -life.
Buck Bryant: Pro -lite.
Brad: Yeah, pro -life. God, I love that shaft. when i hit that i swear i could hit that club as far as a driver when i hit it just perfect
propergolfsociety: Oh yeah.
Brad: Um... For irons, I would go with Mizuno. Pro twos. Those are the first set of big boy irons I say I got um They were the first.
propergolfsociety: Those are awesome.
Brad: they were the first set of irons that um i ever had adjusted for loft and y two degrees flat Um... And then. Wedges!
Brad: I will go. uh Cleveland 900 series. Gum metal black for my... 52 degree.
Brad: I didn't carry a lob wedge in high school or college, really, so I'm going to go with just the Tideless, whatever, the 800 series, I guess. Is that what they were? Bokies.
Buck Bryant: 200 series.
Brad: 200 series, yeah, 200 series.
propergolfsociety: turn sir
Buck Bryant: Yeah.
Brad: Uh... In an oil can. Finish. For my 56 degree. Both those clubs were Christmas presents each year, my junior and senior year from my grandmother.
Brad: So...
propergolfsociety: That was amazing.
Brad: So those were two clubs that are just like. That's what she bought me for. for Christmas and I just. Ah. Really wish I still had them. to be honest with you. i Don't know why I got rid of some gloves putter would be the Scotty Cameron
propergolfsociety: What's your... ah
Brad: Uh... Just Newport 1 .5 Studio Series. My stepdad won one in a scramble. I stole it from him. And after he passed away, I took it back and it's still my.
Brad: Putter of choice when I'm ah feeling down about golf. I'll just go back to that putter I've got a... nice head cover for it that i had custom made that has my Dog Leon that I passed away last year on it that he's my number one dog
propergolfsociety: oh nice
Brad: i had it I had a bunch of pictures of him. custom made or not pictures but embroidered.
propergolfsociety: Yep.
Brad: of him on a leather head cover. um I've lost that head cover a couple of times Both times had been found. One had to be shipped back from Ireland.
propergolfsociety: No way.
Brad: But the cat the other caddy lost it And then... ah The caddy later found it, but they still maybe. pay for the shipping but i wasn't going to let it go away so
propergolfsociety: but Oh my God.
Brad: Um... But yeah, so that would be my putter.
propergolfsociety: Man, you know... Those studio putters back in the day were like...
Brad: Um.
propergolfsociety: That was like... jam up right there man is somebody with a yellow head cover with that with the uh different repair tool on the side i mean that was like you know.
Brad: Yeah. Yep.
Buck Bryant: Yeah.
Brad: then
propergolfsociety: You were living large if you had one of those.
Brad: Yeah. So... Yeah, that's...
Buck Bryant: What kind of duck?
Brad: a
Buck Bryant: What kind of dog was Leon?
Brad: Here's your lab.
Buck Bryant: Okay.
Brad: He was the best he was an english yellow lab.
propergolfsociety: Nice.
Brad: He had a big old blocky head He was just a sweet dog. Actually, I gotta... Hold on. After he died, but my wife had a watercolor of him.
propergolfsociety: Don't go anywhere, folks.
Brad: painted for me, so
propergolfsociety: oh There he is.
Buck Bryant: Oh, Leon.
Brad: There he is at the lake. Like Raven, just... Looking regal. That was good. Beautiful dog.
propergolfsociety: Well, um
Buck Bryant: Nothing like a good dog, man. I um i miss my beagle.
propergolfsociety: But...
Brad: Oh God.
propergolfsociety: But yeah. Buck recently lost his beagle, Otis, right?
Buck Bryant: Otis, he was...
propergolfsociety: but
Buck Bryant: Yeah, that was a tough day in our household. he was a He was with me through all my major life moments. you know My wife and I got him when we were dating, so obviously we were serious.
Buck Bryant: He was with me when I got married. Well, when... We bought our house. We had our child. he was He was a big part of our life. and ah He's on Mount Rushmore.
Buck Bryant: of of dogs that I've had in my life. He's he's what I call a Hall of Famer. you know. So.
propergolfsociety: Oh yeah.
Brad: yeah
Buck Bryant: Now I got Gus.
propergolfsociety: Yeah, we had um
Buck Bryant: Gus is around here somewhere. but uh
propergolfsociety: He's our PGS mascot. Um...
Brad: Oh.
Buck Bryant: hey He's a pretty cool little dog.
Brad: Oh yeah.
propergolfsociety: We had um We had Olive was our dog, our like Mount Rushmore dog. And my wife was taking photos of the animal shelter. the week before we got married.
propergolfsociety: and she said i found the dog that we should have and i said okay well we're getting married in a week i'm not sure if it's the best idea to get a dog the week before we get married Because we had to go out of town. And she talked them into holding on to the dog. And the day that we got back in town from our wedding, we went and picked up Olive and brought her home. And she was the perfect.
propergolfsociety: angel of a dog uh good with all the kids you know as they were babies and all that and we just we'll never have a dog as good as olive but um maybe i should think about putting her on a head cover She's kind of a mutt, though, so it's kind of tough to figure out what to figure that out.
Buck Bryant: Otis wasn't like pure Beagle. He was a... He was a beagle mix. He was mostly beagle. But it was all... Awesome. i'll Tell you what. Let me tell you.
Buck Bryant: He was a hell of a dog.
propergolfsociety: man
Brad: sorry guys i i just disappeared i mean i realized my phone's gonna die so in classic form i I went upstairs to get up.
propergolfsociety: Hey.
Brad: A charger.
propergolfsociety: this this This might be the most highly produced episode we ever do. So even even with that.
Brad: Amen and so.
propergolfsociety: Um,
Brad: that's what we're going for
Buck Bryant: We went from talking about vibes bags to... Our dog's dying.
Brad: So.
propergolfsociety: Dogs?
Buck Bryant: You know?
propergolfsociety: Yeah.
Brad: to To Mount Westmore's adults.
Buck Bryant: so
propergolfsociety: Dead. Hey, listen to our podcast. All of our dogs are dead. Um...
Buck Bryant: Except Gus.
propergolfsociety: Except Gus. Well, and I've got... Two dogs now. Okay. uh We need to round this episode out or people really are going to stop listening to us. but Bye. assured me prior to coming on to this podcast that he has a story that we all need to hear so we're going to introduce a new segment of our brand new podcast it's called story time with Bach.
Buck Bryant: Alright.
propergolfsociety: And we're going to sit back. And... Buck's going to tell us a tale from his golfing life that you're sure to enjoy and always remember.
Brad: um
propergolfsociety: And with that, Buck. Take it away.
Buck Bryant: All right. Well, we were talking about high school bags earlier. Well, I'm going to talk about something that happened to me in high school. I'm from a... Pretty small town. uh the my county high school, we I graduated with like 180 people. So it's pretty small.
Buck Bryant: But we had a pretty good golf team, and um we had a golf match against... our neighboring county, and on that golf team. was a gentleman by the name of Ryan Hibble. He is now the head golf coach for the Georgia Tech men's golf team.
Buck Bryant: But at that time, he was the number one junior golfer in the world. Let me say that again. the number one junior golfer in the world. Well.
Buck Bryant: Our match was at a little course called Scales Creek in Banks County, which is now Chimney Oaks. Um, Got to the golf course. Was ready to go realized I had grabbed...
Buck Bryant: Two right shoes. i had a pair of old uh foot joy dry joys the black ones were like the brown kind of woven leather look in the in the saddle. I lost one of those somehow and I liked them so much I got the same pair.
propergolfsociety: A hundred percent. have
Buck Bryant: And didn't throw the other shoe away. I guess I was. you know case I had
Brad: You need to add shoes to the box bag.
Buck Bryant: All right. I guess in case I had a flat in one of my shoes, I kept it in a spare.
propergolfsociety: Yeah.
Buck Bryant: But ah anyway, I grabbed two right shoes. And ah I was like. oh crap, you know, like. Oh. This sucks. So... I just had to play on my tennis shoes.
Buck Bryant: um Had some old and new balances. Well... I had a pretty good day on the golf course. I shot I think 36, maybe 35. But...
Buck Bryant: Whatever I shot, it was one stroke better than Ryan Hibble. the number one junior golfer in the world at that time.
Brad: Yeah.
Buck Bryant: And. ah So I ended up beating the number one. junior golfer in the world. and a pair of tennis shoes. and uh he probably does not remember me but oh i remember him you know and uh
Brad: take
Buck Bryant: That is one of the biggest feathers in my golf cap. Actually, a few years back when he was the coach for... The Sooners. and Oklahoma, they won the NCAAs.
Buck Bryant: And they were interviewing him on TV. My wife came into the room and... ah So... Hey Leslie, look. That was the number one junior golfer in the world, and I beat him in high school.
Buck Bryant: but in a high school match. She looked at me and she was just like, cool. Whatever. So... My wife's a huge fan. Um... But yeah, that was a highlight of my high school golfing.
propergolfsociety: Huge fan of that story.
Buck Bryant: career. right there.
propergolfsociety: Nice. Um... My, uh... dissimilar story but kind of the same thing was I, my mom entered my friend and me in a junior tournament when we were like.
propergolfsociety: I don't know 13 or 14 years old. in Griffin, Georgia at the Griffin Country Club. and It was a two -day tournament. And to cut to the chase. I think I shot a 110 and then I shot like a 101.
propergolfsociety: my first tournament I ever played in. And um there was this. little redheaded kid. played in our group. And. uh his mom was talking to him from the car path in spanish and i was too busy looking at i had these like you know the greg norman golf balls from the 90s i mean they were like like rocks.
propergolfsociety: Like they're like.
Buck Bryant: The Max Fly XS.
propergolfsociety: Yeah. Like, yeah. But they had the Norman shark on them. I mean, this is like.
Buck Bryant: oh Oh, yeah, those. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
propergolfsociety: This is a level we're talking about. This is like 1997. I'm not really like playing competitive golf yet. and um I'm looking for those balls in the woods. I have no idea what's going on. Shooting my 110. And then we go to sign our cards and I look down and this kid had shot 72.
propergolfsociety: And of course he went on to win the tournament. And then I realized years later, it was Roberto Castro.
Buck Bryant: oh
propergolfsociety: ah So he had come down from Atlanta to play whoop all of our asses while we were chasing our good Norman balls in the woods. And then to go on to have the career that he did. So Roberto, you will never remember that. You will never remember me and you will probably never listen to this podcast, podcast but if you do.
propergolfsociety: You beat the tar out of me in like 1997 at the Griffin Country Club. And I'll never forgive you. um so ah There's some story time.
Buck Bryant: maybe Maybe that's why Ryan Hibble went on to do such great things, because I...
propergolfsociety: You humbled him.
Buck Bryant: You know, I lit a fire underneath them by taking them down that day, you know.
Brad: You humbled him.
propergolfsociety: Exactly right. Exactly. Exactly. He had to do better.
Buck Bryant: So... Anyway.
propergolfsociety: ah All right, look, guys. Uh... that that's good That was good. let let's ah Let's wrap up real quick. um We have an event coming up less than seven days from today. Those of you that follow us on Instagram know this all too well.
propergolfsociety: Fall at the field. So we started the Proper Golf Society in April with a Persimmon and Blade tournament around here in Athens, Georgia. We had our second tournament in Aiken, South Carolina, the 90 compression classic. All 90s equipment was super fun. Great, great tournament. We're going to do again next year. Stay tuned. And so our last event of the year, we're calling this our capstone event in our first year as a proper golf society at the Fields Golf Club in the Grange. The field is 98 % full. We have like...
propergolfsociety: Two or three spots left. I have to double check. So if you're on the fence about playing, just contact one of us. You can message us through Instagram or however you need to to make sure you get a spot. Go to our website, thepropergolfer .com. um It's going to be a great time. Persimmon blade only. We have clubs for people that don't have clubs. Thanks to Corey Creeland at retro golf club. And I'm literally, you can't see from here, but I am surrounded in my home office by.
propergolfsociety: uh head covers and shirts for the tea gift and all of this stuff that we're putting together to be ready to go play in the Grange on Sunday. So if you're thinking about it or you're just not hearing about it, you need to, as we say down here in the South, you need to kind of shit or get off the pot. um so Register, to contact us, make sure you have a spot, and we'll go from there. um Do you guys have anything to add for our first podcast since we're not going to really edit it and just put it out there in the universe?
Buck Bryant: Everybody. Come to the fields. It's going to be fun.
Brad: Come the pills.
propergolfsociety: Okay? All right, we're going to end the recording. I have no idea what it's going to be like, but we are going to publish it. So sorry if you listened to it. You're welcome if you did and you liked it. And let us know what you think.
propergolfsociety: Tell us if we want more stuff. This is supposed to be on Spotify and iTunes if we did it right, so or Apple Podcasts. So if you liked it. please subscribe. And we'll try to do more of these as we kind of hobble along here, building the plane as we fly it at the proper golf society. And if you didn't like it, tell us what you didn't like, and maybe we'll ignore you and do it our own way anyway, next time and see how it goes. All right, guys, we're out of here. Bye.
Buck Bryant: See ya.
propergolfsociety: See you guys.
