I'm Mark McBride. And I'm Steve Brown. Welcome to the Yo-Yo Player Podcast, Season 2, where two dusty old gray beards reminisce with their friends about the 1999 Fiend Magazine Yo-Yo Tour.

In this episode...

Navigating Company Rivalries on Warped Tour

00:00:15
Speaker
The Mason-Dixon Line.
00:00:20
Speaker
Going back to the Warped Tour, was there any kind of understanding of what they were getting into or what yeah was going on in the Warped Tour? was it i mean, did they talk anything about, like... understanding what was, what they were getting into.
00:00:32
Speaker
When they told, when they talked to me, they basically was like, don't get close to the other companies, which is yeah amazing.
00:00:44
Speaker
Yeah. It's amazing. But little did they know i knew all of you guys before yeah started working with you. And then we had all talked like it is basically us.
00:00:56
Speaker
And then it's the company second. And that's kind of how we went through the entire tour. And, you know, I absolutely just ran with it.

First Multi-Company Marketing Campaign in U.S.

00:01:07
Speaker
And I created with Mark's idea. Mark's idea was a single brand. My idea made the first multi-company marketing campaign in the United States. yeah yeah And that's a big thing. They never worked together. They always saw each other's enemies. I mean, at one point, Duncan had heavies to go after their competitors to make sure they didn't compete in the same town. yeah that was very different was That was generations ago. Let's be like let's be because let's be fair. well I call that out.
00:01:36
Speaker
At this point, Duncan didn't think he'd had any competition because the Omega was just coming up and there was no one else around. Russell wasn't a U.S. company. Spintastics barely existed. ProYo was a joke.
00:01:47
Speaker
But I got everybody involved. Sorry? Well, but here's the thing. like But this was honestly at the height of the boom like when we were playing together. Yeah, but I didn't think that way.
00:01:59
Speaker
They still thought they were small. Oh, they thought it was never going to end. Yeah. I mean they absolutely thought โ€“ This is also the same year it died.

Significance of the Tour Blog

00:02:09
Speaker
Yes.
00:02:13
Speaker
Like you don't always know what's going to become memorable. You know you don't โ€“ like first of all, the blog, let's be honest. The point of the blog was immediate involvement and, you know, to tell people what was going on, kind of it like playing along.
00:02:31
Speaker
Right. And so you don't know what's going to age, what's going to matter three days later, you know, what's going to become a thing. Yeah. I mean, we were doing this.
00:02:46
Speaker
I mean, we were doing this for posterity, but we had no sense of scale.
00:02:53
Speaker
mean, you can't though. like we we had yeah And we had no sense of context. And it was we were young. We were really young, right? So like we didn't we didn't understand what we were documenting.
00:03:05
Speaker
yeah like We had had an adult tell us, like yeah, this is the first time this has ever happened. we were like, okay. you know Because it seems so obvious. Like why, obviously why would this not happen? This is, yeah. like I want you just do this. I mean, I feel like reading this tour, but like I feel like all the Chad sketches from SNL, you know, where it's like the, it was all, it was Pete Davidson. okay It would be like this woman who was like completely in love with him. And she's giving this heartfelt, passionate speech about, I just can't leave my husband for you, but I just imagine the life we would have together. And he's just like, okay.
00:03:43
Speaker
um It's like he's completely unaware of the enormity of this for the other person. So like I read through this blog and, you know, and and looking back on it now and like talking to people about it now and and realizing that like this is the first time anything like this had ever happened and the last time and now the current climate of everything means that something like this is completely fucking impossible. to actually do now so this was really like an incredible like golden once in a lifetime moment in the history of the stupid little industry we're in and at the time we were just like you who
00:04:24
Speaker
ah
00:04:30
Speaker
yeah southwest sucks yep to southwest man it's like and i had to go like 12 spots and end up going into Jacksonville.

Duncan's Travel Arrangements: Cost vs. Convenience

00:04:39
Speaker
And then take a Greyhound to Tallahassee and I had to pick your monkey ass up at two in the morning.
00:04:46
Speaker
That was pretty much, technically, that was the beginning of the tour right there. Me picking you up and us going to Denny's. You
00:04:57
Speaker
flew from Los Angeles to Jacksonville and then had to take a fucking Greyhound to Tallahassee. That is true. Now, I would love to just point out for the sake of historical reference here that every single travel arrangement ever made for me by Duncan was similarly bad.
00:05:15
Speaker
ah Even when there were different people there making them. Like, this was not an Andrew thing. This is 100% a Duncan thing. They would, every single time, without fail, choose whatever the cheapest possible option was without any consideration given to logistics at all.
00:05:37
Speaker
I would frequently have to drive an hour and change to fly out of the Akron-Canton airport instead of the Cleveland airport.
00:05:47
Speaker
so that they could save $20 on the fare despite it costing me like an extra, so like an hour round trip of commuting in order to get to that airport.
00:06:00
Speaker
Yeah. It was ridiculous. I mean, every single time without fail. And I think, I think what it was is they actually had like a limit where like if the travel was below X dollars, then you didn't have to get approval.
00:06:15
Speaker
And so they were always trying to stay below that limit so that they could just like slide it through. And it basically meant like, okay, you're going to be leaving at 4 a.m. m from Akron Canton airport, which is an hour and 30 minutes from you.
00:06:28
Speaker
shit Oh, gosh. So, yeah. So, yeah, it was because there's no, there's no big airport at Tallahassee. So. Yeah, Jacksonville

Road Trip to Texas: Bonding Experience

00:06:43
Speaker
Greyhound. Yeah, it's like it's a crappy little regional. It's like flying into Chico.
00:06:47
Speaker
Yeah. like Yeah, technically there is an airport there, but nobody really uses it. And you, me, and Lau rented a car to drive out to Texas. It started in Texas.
00:06:58
Speaker
So, we yeah, we you flew into Tallahassee. We loaded up a rental car.
00:07:05
Speaker
And that that initial...
00:07:09
Speaker
That initial like road trip to the tour, like very much sort of set the tone. Totally.
00:07:20
Speaker
So narratively, we you know, the three of us started Taliesin. and It's the the ad the adverb for Narratively? Sure. Narratively. Narratively? Narrativititly. I'm going to go well, let's go and look at the baby Jesus at the narratively scene. Oh, love that sound right. The narrative scene? Let's go check that out. No, that was, that that's the, ah that's the pop-up strip joint that shows up just during Christmas season in Jacksonville, Florida. Narrative.
00:07:54
Speaker
Narrative scene.
00:08:01
Speaker
In Alabama I got some illegal fireworks.
00:08:05
Speaker
Industrial or agricultural? I got these gophers I need to take care of. Yeah, I have these crows in my trees. I think I could get them out with this fountain and some bottle rockets.
00:08:17
Speaker
I'm going to need to grow some bottle rockets because it's an awful lot of crows. I can't believe they actually asked me.
00:08:31
Speaker
And we drove out and that was the, the drive there was really kind of the, earth the, the, the beginning, the beginning of the, the, of the adventure.
00:08:46
Speaker
And the story that I always tell people is like, as anybody knows that ever grew up in Florida, what is north of Florida is Alabama, which is good for fireworks.
00:08:59
Speaker
Yep. And we did. We stopped at firework stand that was directly across the street from Wesley's booby trap.
00:09:10
Speaker
Now, here's the thing. So last year, my buddy Darren's band did like a album release show for their new album. And they played a little bar in Birmingham called the Church Key.
00:09:25
Speaker
They did a show in Atlanta and the next day they did a show in Birmingham. I flew out to go hang out with them and celebrate the new album. And I was hanging out at the church key in Birmingham and chatting with somebody. And I was like, yeah, the last time I was in Alabama, I bought fireworks across the street from a place called Wesley's booby trap. And you,
00:09:45
Speaker
It was like the old fucking salsa commercial where everybody just the record scratch and everybody whips around and yells, Wesley's booby trap. Everybody in the bar knew that place. Everybody like it was that legendary dive strip club that everybody knew. And they're like, you didn't go in there, did you?
00:10:07
Speaker
and I was like, oh, hell no. We just bought fireworks across the street. And they're like, dude, I got stories about that place. at crazy gyms. Nobody remembered the fireworks stand across the street from it, but everybody remembered the titty

Fireworks in Alabama: A Humorous Adventure

00:10:21
Speaker
part.
00:10:21
Speaker
Oh, like, cause crazy gyms fireworks was in a like it was in a trailer. Like I'm pretty sure it wasn't there much longer. Yeah. yeah I mean, yeah, it was a double wide trailer. You could only go in one end of it and then come out the other. And we had to sign a waiver saying that we were purchasing these for agricultural purposes.
00:10:43
Speaker
choose It was one of those things that we walked in and the guys immediately like go for problem. And we're like, huh? And he goes, gopher problem and we're like yeah fucking gophers and he's like sure thing we got just what you need and then you know we went and bought like two brown grocery bags full of no we each bought a brown grocery bag there was three brown grocery bags of fireworks when we left there And then we had to sign a little waiver that just said, you know, these will only be used for agricultural purposes to, you know, blah, blah, blah. And then we paid for our shit ton of very not like very borderline legal fireworks and went on our way.
00:11:29
Speaker
Well, I remember fucking holding a really large firework in my mouth and fucking taking a photo and Steve has a lighter right there and he fucking flicked he fucking flitting the goddamn Zippo. I could i was like, motherfucker. had this big ass firework in my mouth the size of a dildo. mean, was like, dude, there you go. But um I remember that. mean, we went to Graceland, right? Ate some good barbecue. i remember. Remember some of that? Yeah. yeah Awesome. Yeah, that was we were that was a really good age to do the dumbest shit possible every chance we got. It was good. You're posing with a giant fucking explosive in your mouth. Let me just go ahead and pretend to light it. Sign me up, Steve. the thing that i The thing that I loved about it is that we... So when we get to the tour bus, now i'm skipping over Texas, but we get when we actually got to the tour bus...
00:12:20
Speaker
The three of us were like, well, here's the deal. um We're getting bunks. And Steve said, well, I smoke. So I got to be in the โ€“ like they had like the back lounge was the quote-unquote smoking lounge. So there was โ€“ so you got the bunk in the back smoking lounge because you were smoker.
00:12:37
Speaker
And we said, okay, well, I've got all the computer and camera gear in my bunk. So I have no room for the fireworks. Lau had a bunch of the other setup managerial stuff in his. He didn't have room for the fireworks. And we couldn't put the fireworks underneath the bus because you can't put fireworks underneath the bus. So like, well, Steve, looks like you're sleeping with three three grocery bags of fireworks under your head.
00:13:03
Speaker
Yeah.
00:13:06
Speaker
so we So we got to the beginning of the tour, which we actually got there. we No, we stopped at Graceland on the way. because we we Yeah, we stopped at Graceland on the way, checked that out, because I don't think any of us had been.
00:13:19
Speaker
no wait. I had. i you had I had never been. no it was it that By that point, I was such a like devotee to pop art like and this in the ridiculousness of it. that like I loved Elvis, and going to Graceland was like a hajj. You had to do it once.
00:13:40
Speaker
all All devotees that were able, once in their life, were obligated to make a pilgrimage to Graceland. Right. Which, I mean, if you've never been, it's kind of, it's, it's um it occupies that same sort of cultural layer of as, like, the Playboy Mansion. Right.
00:13:59
Speaker
where, you know, everybody knows it and it has like this storied history and everything. and then when you see it in person, it's like a total piece of shit. Like, it's just fucking garbage. Like, it's a total shithole. Like, you why do garbage you walk through Elvis's house and it's like, that is the most disgusting fucking carpet. Those couches look like they've never been fucking clean. Everything is fucking terrible.
00:14:19
Speaker
I disagree. It's a fucking mansion. It's awesome. It's beautiful. it is a It is a monument to the brilliance that was the king and the time and place that he lived.
00:14:33
Speaker
Yes, it is a monument to the brilliance of the white dude who stole black music and got rich off of it. Oh shit. No, it's, it's, it was, it was, it was wonderfully bonkers. It was all the way. So shabby. It is one of those, I mean, it's, it's one of those things where you're looking and you're like, was it this run down because they turned it into a tourist attraction or was it this run down by the time he died?
00:14:59
Speaker
I think it's one of those things that it's, I think anybody's house, like when you, even if you're, Even if you're rolling in the cash like Elvis was at the end, like every every like if you just took your house right now and start letting it it started letting people roll through it, they'd be like, really?
00:15:21
Speaker
He lived here? Yeah.
00:15:25
Speaker
Because it ain't the Taj Mahal. And I will say the interesting thing too about it is that um the actual house isn't that big. like the it's just it's just a big manion It's just a big mansion in the middle of the city.
00:15:41
Speaker
But it wasn't that big. like I mean, it was a mansion by 1960s standards. yeah but it was it was Not a castle. Just mansion. It was on a huge piece of land and it had like multiple like outbuildings and stuff and like the whole...
00:15:54
Speaker
you know, garden and all that. But it was it was kind of it was definitely interesting to go and and, you know, like once you get a look, there's a lot of things that when you see them up close, you're like, this is not as impressive as I wanted it to be, which leads us to Warped Tour.
00:16:10
Speaker
yeah

Reunion with Old Friends in Austin

00:16:13
Speaker
So we had we you and Lau had a buddy Arlo who was part of the...
00:16:29
Speaker
part of the infinite illusions crew in the, like he worked in the back and he put together like a significant percentage of the original Spintastics.
00:16:40
Speaker
Like not that he has any part of Yo-Yo history, just that he was nearby. And so he had moved back to Texas cause he's a good old Texas boy. So he had moved back to Texas. And so we said, yeah, he was living in Austin. So we stopped in Austin to, to see him on our way through.
00:16:57
Speaker
Yeah, so we were hanging out in Austin for a couple days. First day was in San Antonio was the first date? Yeah, the first yeah first day of tour was San Antonio.
00:17:07
Speaker
And so we were hanging out with hanging out with ah Arlo and Satan's Cheerleaders. So Satan's

Encounter with Punk Group: Austin's Culture

00:17:18
Speaker
Cheerleaders, just to stop and explain this for a second, is the most 90s thing that you can imagine. was
00:17:26
Speaker
It is literally a a group of gorgeous, tattooed, goth, punk girls wearing black and red cheerleading outfits that say Satan's cheerleaders on them that would go out and go-go dance for fucking punk rock and rockabilly bands. Yeah, that's it. They didn't make anything. There was no like output. They literally were just like, we are hot fucking girls who are going to come and make your fucking show that much cooler.
00:17:57
Speaker
And it's all these bands were like, fuck yeah, let's do this. Exactly. They had they did have some routines. They would get together practice. It was like it was like a dance troupe. that were cheerleaders yeah for Satan.
00:18:10
Speaker
Yeah. This is, it is the most nineties shit you can possibly imagine. fate The kind of thing that would only happen In Portland and Austin, Texas.
00:18:21
Speaker
Yeah. And it was amazing. And ah two of the cheerleaders lived, I think, let's see, Arlo's wife at the time, Ashley, was a cheerleader. And i think Paul, i think her best friend was a cheerleader and was also staying with them at the time. So, of course, we ended up hanging out with a handful of them while we were in town. I remember we also, while we were there, we went to whatever...
00:18:47
Speaker
bar they all frequented and like half of them worked at that um that was in austin that was the atomic uh atomic lounge sounds right someplace where every they had like 13 shots all of which like involved tabasco sauce yeah uh it was the atomic lounge the funny thing about it is i had played that venue two years before on a sideshow tour yeah So it was it was really funny like going back there and being like, oh shit, yeah, i know this place. And I remember like we had gone out, it was industrial night and we had all gone out dancing and I was like, i I got to dance to Revco's song, Beers, Steers and Queers at an industrial club in Austin.
00:19:43
Speaker
with Austin, Arlo and Ashley and Paul. Yeah, Texas. ay Tracy. Tracy. We're not going to go into the Tracy story because it makes makes Mark look like a bitch and he's the editor so he'll just cut it out even if we do go into it.
00:19:56
Speaker
I have Steve Trayton out. And then there was Tracy lived was at that house too. yeah that's Yeah, Tracy was was there. yeah Yeah. And that night when we were all hanging out at that bar, i i was playing...
00:20:12
Speaker
I was playing pool with Tracy and had been flirting with her like the whole time that we were there in Dawson. You playing so hard. Yeah, we're at this place, the Atomic Cafe.
00:20:25
Speaker
We're like hanging out, drinking beers, shooting pool, hanging out with Lifto and his wife the Jim Rowe Circus. Lifto being like a really crazy guy and Lifto's wife being ah two words, Mrs. Robinson. That's all I'm going to say.
00:20:38
Speaker
Okay. And so we're hanging out shooting pool and pride, of course, has been drooling over this chick Tracy for like, you know, since we got there. We were playing pool and making bets and we had kind of gotten to the end of creative bets. And I was not smooth enough to really be as much of a player as I wish that I was. And I was just missing so many opportunities and so many cues and all that stuff.
00:21:02
Speaker
So she beats him in this game. And basically what that means is that Mark is her bitch for the rest of the night, just straight up bitch. He has to run around, fetch her beer, fetch her this, fetch her that, light her cigarettes, hold her hand, wipe her ass for everything.
00:21:14
Speaker
And I know I came back to beat her and it was free. So Mark won his bitch head back. So and then they go for a double or nothing. So Mark wins this game and then he's like, well, okay, let's double or no, let's double or nothing it again.
00:21:27
Speaker
And she's like, okay, what for? And he's like, i don't know. We'll figure it out. So, you know, Tracy basically says, okay, well, let's go ahead and do this. She's like, I'm out of money. I'm like, okay, I tell you what, we'll bet a dollar. I'll bet you this dollar, but here's the deal. I can buy anything with this dollar.
00:21:45
Speaker
She's like, fine. So i had ah and to, and just to make sure we, um, I tore the face out of the dollar so that we bet this dollar bill without a face.
00:21:56
Speaker
And with this dollar bill, I could buy it. Like if I, if I want, I could buy anything type thing. and and i remember playing it down and she, in she's like, why do I feel like I just bet you my soul?
00:22:09
Speaker
and I went, because you did. I won. And I still haven't framed on my wall that I have Tracy's soul. Fantastic. Now here's the question. Did you get to make out with Tracy?
00:22:20
Speaker
So, no, but that was definitely a point where I'm sure that I dropped the ball. I am

Life Lesson from a Missed Romantic Opportunity

00:22:27
Speaker
sure, looking back, that I missed, I'm sure that I dropped that ball. I love that you made such a big deal out of this stupid fucking dollar bill and you kept it as a reminder that what you should have done was been like, hey, do you want to go make out?
00:22:41
Speaker
It was a monument to lost opportunities.
00:22:48
Speaker
And I have it enshrined. Amazing. Amazing. So just just a little life lesson to all you fellas out there. Don't try to be clever. Just goddamn say what you want. Just be like, hey, do you want to go make out? And then if she says no, be like, cool.
00:23:03
Speaker
To be fair. Yes, then go make out. Like, I mean, this is not complicated stuff. In my defense. When you're young, you feel like you need to be clever about it. and you In my defense, I did crash with her.
00:23:15
Speaker
Like, I slept in her bed because we were running out of beds. And she did say... You see that sword over there? If you try anything, I'm going to grab it. She did threaten me with a large bladed object. That's fair.
00:23:26
Speaker
I'm not, I guess, I guess a certain amount of like plausible deniability. I mean, it's worth noting that, you know, when you hear the the phrase, don't mess with Texas, we're specifically referring to the women that live there.
00:23:39
Speaker
Yeah.
00:23:44
Speaker
were great folks, you know, but I had like, I had like kind of made this like bond with one of the girls on the tour and you know, she was, she was cute. She's a little heavy for my taste really, you know, but I liked that. liked her. she's a nice girl. And so we were making friends and like, you know, sometimes I had laid, I got laid her bunk at night and we bullshit or whatever, nothing too serious was going on, but this was going on for a little while. And then at some point, like I had like made some bet with her and like, I bet her her soul or something like that. And she lost, she lost the bet.
00:24:13
Speaker
She lost the bet and you know, didn't make a big deal, but I had her write her like name on a dollar bill. Like I give you my soul. i had to like put it on a dollar bill. Like it was just, i don't know if it's because around i did that.
00:24:28
Speaker
I did that to one of the girls in Austin. Yeah. I feel like i got from somewhere. Yeah. No, it started. And I remember, I remember like, you know, we were talking about kind thing. And I remember about halfway through the tour, you coming over to being like, dude, you remember how you got Tracy's tour before her soul? Her soul before the tour? Check it out.
00:24:50
Speaker
I got one too. That's hilarious. I did not, I did not remember that part the story. Well, so I, so I did that. And then like several days later, she will, she came to me and she was like really upset about it.
00:25:02
Speaker
Like really upset, like, like Craig, it's just Christian or something like she was like really upset about it. And I was like, oh, well I don't care. You know, like I'm like atheist, you know, like a punk rock atheist guy, like don't here, take it. You have it, you know, but our friendship was never, we were never friends anymore. That was like the end of our friendship. It was like so awkward. Yeah, it was weird. It was like, I didn't, didn't really care about I think was kind of just like, I couldn't believe she was that upset about it, you know? And I was kind like, well, here it is. You want me to rip it up? You want to burn it? I don't know. Like, well, what's going to satisfy your savior? I don't know what to do with this thing now here. Like, all right, whatever.
00:25:45
Speaker
One of my favorite stories of that was that um Arlo worked on cars. Texas boy worked on cars kind of thing. So does Buddy Paul.
00:25:55
Speaker
And so we were hanging out with them. And at some point, Arlo arlo goes, um so you know what?
00:26:07
Speaker
You've earned snap-on mesh back cap. Now this is before Ed Hardy. This is before these things were trendy. This is the most like iconic, like hillbilly thing was a mesh back cap with, this one had snap on tools on the front. I was honored.
00:26:25
Speaker
I was honored. I was like in a anthropology sociology. I think I'm like the, the chief has thus given me a monument to his,
00:26:37
Speaker
to his culture. I will cherish this. I will put it in my British Museum as, you know, thing. And so, and I was like, now I, but I respect, I respect that the, the snap on cap has, you get, there's a proper way to wear it, right? There's two ways. like, it's like, hell yeah, it's proper way it. You gotta fold it like this. You fold the the brim and the bill, and it like that folds in like that. That's bullshit. Everybody from Florida knows you fucking curl that shit.
00:27:03
Speaker
Folding it is for assholes from Texas. No. It's from assholes from Northern Texas.
00:27:12
Speaker
at Like fucking Arlo originally was from Amarillo, which is actually where my mom was from. And my, and so at some point he gives it this, I'm like, look, it's folded kind of thing. And I rolled it up and I'm like strutting around wearing my, my, my indigenous cap.
00:27:28
Speaker
And I rolled over to Paul and I'm like, Paul, look, Arlo gave you a snap on cap. It even taught me how you fold it like this. You fold it. And and Paul goes, fold in it.
00:27:39
Speaker
What the fuck? You don't fold a cap, you curl a cap. Everybody fucking knows you curl a cap. Only a goddamn, like, only someone fucking northern Texas. Amarillo, they, Arnold's from so far north, he's got a fucking Canuck. He's just got a goddamn Canuck. Fold your cap, you curl it.
00:27:59
Speaker
Told you. Fucking curl this shit. so I still, so I was like, fucking great. I still have that fucking cap. Again, like, it's, it's, it's a, like, I thus went wet and was accepted by the locals, the tribal locals.

i knew absolutely zero. I mean... So Steve has taught me more than anything about how punk rock works, Dropkick Murphys, Bouncing Souls, Les and Jake. That's all I really ever knew about any of that stuff there. Because, you know, I'm just a black dude from Kansas City that moved to um all River, Massachusetts, Westport, Massachusetts. They're going to throw me on to this tour.

that I had no nothing i knew nothing about, but because I knew some of the artists, actually I knew several of the artists, ah you know, Ice-T, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, you know, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise that really, you know, just went forth to something just, I wouldn't even to say magical, it was just something just amazing that, you know, I'll probably never, you know, I don't think any of us will ever live that again. but you know, that was just something just stupid sick.
