Podcast and Hosts Introduction

00:01:14
Speaker
Hello, everyone, and welcome to Eberron Renewed, an actual play tabletop RPG podcast where we play the Genesis game system using the Eberron setting from Dungeons and Dragons. That's all true. It's accurate. It wasn't smooth, but it is accurate. It's going to hold up in court. All right. My name is Jeff. I'm Philip. And I'm Eric.
00:01:38
Speaker
And it is just the three of us today, uh, taking it back old school, like early days of campaign one, just the three of us on and ever on reviewed. Um, we're going to go back past the last arc and I'm going to just whine and whine about my roles. So go ahead and strap in scream and scream.
00:02:00
Speaker
Um, roles, so many roles. It was, it was a wider session. Yeah. We, so we have the two most crucial players here that one who did not succeed on a single role and the other one who was incapacitated for half the session. So, uh, the only role I succeeded on was the last thing of the whole section. It was to heal myself of one strain.
00:02:22
Speaker
It was absolutely wild to be incapacitated and not actually be Unconscious to try to figure out how to how do you how to play a character as incapacitated while sure still? That's always a thing that you say yeah when talking about any system I feel like is like oh just because you're incapacitated doesn't mean you're unconscious, but it's like how do you actually?
00:02:45
Speaker
practice that. Yeah I'm not sure I found that out yet. Yeah I mean my rule was you can't make checks. Anything else? That's totally reasonable.
00:02:57
Speaker
Hey guys, we'll get there. We will start at the beginning.

Character Development Highlights

00:03:05
Speaker
This arc was teased at the end of the last one with Reynard getting a job from Basil. And so we spent a good portion of the first episode because all of us leveled up and used XP and got some cool stuff.
00:03:21
Speaker
You know, Hob is magical now, Eris has a bionic arm, Milo is sinking further into whatever is going on with him, and Raynard remembered he has the power to do magic. The power was inside him all along. Yeah, we can say whatever we want because he's not going to listen to this.
00:03:44
Speaker
I don't know what happened, I need to listen back. But yeah, so after that we got back into the role playing. We met Will, who is Milo's old buddy, who gave us a very crucial piece of information. That this thing we knew going in that this storehouse, warehouse, whatever, was guarded by, what's the actual, we call them ghost guards a lot because we're simpletons, the characters and also the players.
00:04:12
Speaker
But, um, is it like spectral guardian? Is there a, is there an actual term that I have written down in my notebook with spectral guardian? Like that's just, was it, was it like a monster manual monster or okay. Cool. And this special guardian may appear somewhere in a rainy source material. I don't know, but, um, yeah, that's, that's just what's written down. Okay. Um, is that something we might see in the DMS spell book down the road then, whatever your build was for him?
00:04:40
Speaker
Uh, it's a Genesis build, so probably not, unfortunately. Makes sense. Okay. Uh, did we ever talk about, do we want to explain that really quickly?

Genesis System Content Rules

00:04:46
Speaker
What happened with the DMS Guild? I don't think we ever talked about it. Um, sure. Uh, we can just simply say it. Yeah. So, uh, for, for Patreon, we, Philip and I have the DMS spell book that we will update with stuff from our campaigns and, uh, homebrew, uh, D&D fifth edition stuff was how it started.
00:05:04
Speaker
And another big thing was my Eberron conversion for the Genesis system was a big thing since I was putting in a lot of work to set up for this campaign. And then it was brought to our attention in kind of a circuitous fashion that when people agree to create content for the Foundry, which is Genesis version of the DMS Guild, that you basically sign this thing saying that you won't put
00:05:32
Speaker
your content behind a paywall or provide it free or anything like that it is
00:05:37
Speaker
for that use only. We never signed that contract, but we have a good relationship with the people at FFG and Edge Studios who create Genesis and didn't want to risk potentially souring that relationship by essentially it could be perceived that we were making money off of Genesis content without giving them a cut, which is the whole point of the Foundry. So that's why it was taken down.
00:06:03
Speaker
We have, in addition to a professional, I mean, I don't know, I don't get paid for this. In addition to a general respect, we have personal friends who work, who work or have worked on these, you know, properties in the past. So that's why I did that. But so unfortunately that will not be in the DMs.
00:06:24
Speaker
But it was neat and maybe you can figure it out on your own. But so and then Raynard, of course, learned that the place has doors. Two doors, two doors. Aeris, Aeris and Jane Philip. Do you want to talk about no being character only?
00:06:41
Speaker
Do you want to talk about Eris's arm?

Eris's Cybernetic Arm Details

00:06:43
Speaker
What you, what, you know, kind of where it came from, how you built it, what we know it can do so far? Um, mechanically speaking, what it is, is it is a cybernetic arm, um, which you can find in the Genesis core book or in the, what's the Android book, uh, shadow, the stock, shadows, shadows of the beanstalk. Yeah. Just one singular. They made a big shadow of.
00:07:06
Speaker
Okay, I always wanted to be shadows the thing is that it's the it's like people like it's it's different to the player characters But it's okay. Anyway, all you need is one more light source and you got shadows. Let's take and You're saying there's only one street lamp in the whole thing I'm saying nothing. I'm saying the beanstalk might be such a good street lamp if you've read the literature Do your research read theory and you'll see how big the beanstalk. This is good stuff Nope
00:07:35
Speaker
Yeah in Genesis core book in the settings specific stuff for cyberpunk you can find cybernetic implants essentially and so in terms of the mechanics of it what we did was just take the cybernetic arm and use that. Eric and I went back and forth like just on how to do it for a bit and that was where we landed so even though of course what Eris has done is
00:08:04
Speaker
mage craft it is not itself in any way enchanted
00:08:11
Speaker
It might be in the future, but for the first role we did, the role that we did to make it work was just for crafting a cybernetic arm as opposed to for doing any kind of enchanting. So it was just a mechanics role to craft the arm. Mechanically, what it does is it improves her brawn by one. So she is a bit stronger now, although she has almost no skills to attach to that, but she's physically a bit stronger than she used to be. And her arm works again.
00:08:42
Speaker
So that was the mechanical workout of it as to what exactly it's done to her character sheet. I know we have some questions about it later, so I'll deal with the big story side about it when we get to that.

Dungeon Mastering and Creative Freedom

00:08:55
Speaker
Sure. I'll say, just because I think about this sometimes and never bring it up because I really try not to be nice to him, but we are really lucky with Eric as a DM that
00:09:10
Speaker
He will let us, as long as we can justify it and make it flavor wise, reskin it, whatever we need to do. He's been very permissive about things we want to do. I mean, I found some random weapon before campaign one that I thought looked neat and he was like, yeah, sure. Okay. That's exactly how I sounded. Yes. It was exactly how, well, I mean.
00:09:34
Speaker
I did it better but it was a lot like at least currently or this thing with Philip because I've been listening there's another podcast that I am actually a patron of and one of the one of the tier benefits is once a month they'll do like an extra hour of content and sometimes it's a D&D court
00:09:52
Speaker
where someone will write in with the grievance from their table and they adjudicate. And man, there are some just stickler like no warforged in the shadow fell kind of DMs. And if that's how you're or I just made something up. I don't know if that's true.
00:10:09
Speaker
Sorry, not Shadowfell, Shadowrun, or Dark Suns, or whatever, Spelljammer. Yeah, pardon me, I said Shadowfell, there definitely absolutely are. Anyway, whereas, if that's the way your table wants to play, if everybody's on board with that, then that's fine. But if one of your players is writing into another show to get insight on how to deal with it, then they're probably not on the same page.
00:10:36
Speaker
I mean, there's been some pretty egregious stuff on both sides. There have been some very wrong players as much as there have been some very wrong DMs on this thing. Anyway, and so just like hearing some of those other horsters, I've only ever played with Eric or Phillip as the DM or Chris or like a one
