00:00:10
Speaker

00:00:21
Speaker
Hello. Welcome.

Creating a Unique Podcast Atmosphere

00:00:25
Speaker
Hello, hello. Sorry, you have to wait for the really cool... beatboxing, hip, hip, hip glock and the AI drop down. oh man. It's like we're in a club, but we're not in a club. We're on a podcast.
00:00:42
Speaker
Wow. yeah wow Holy shit. Wow, just two two white guys coming together. two Caucasian straight males doing a podcast. Wow. It's never been done before. It's never been done before. i don't I don't know how we're not canceled yet. I mean, it's been 30 seconds into our show and we're not even canceled yet. And you know what, Ron? That's plus.

Exploring Gaming Apps and Sponsorships

00:01:03
Speaker
Ron, I have opinions on the world, okay? I'm sure you do. Tell us about your privileged life, sir. I need to be heard. Yes, it hurts.
00:01:14
Speaker
um Sorry, I'm just finishing up a game of Royal Match. I love it, Yeah, I do too. I play it every night. um That's what we're talking about today. We're talking about gaming apps, Royal Match. ah Check it out. Download now.
00:01:27
Speaker
We're not sponsored by them. Nobody sponsors us yet. Hopefully not. Yeah, well, Ron doesn't know that they're secretly paying me.

Meet the Hosts: Robert and Ron

00:01:35
Speaker
Oh, shit. um But ah anyway, welcome to the show. um This is episode one, so I guess we should do some introductions because neither of us are famous people.
00:01:45
Speaker
No, no, no. I've been working too long in this industry to be famous, damn it. yeah Wow, that is a that is a slogan. we I've been working too long in this industry to be famous. at I love that, and it makes me sad at the same time. It's most of us. Let's be honest, it's most of us.
00:02:02
Speaker
ah but you You go ahead and introduce yourself first to the world, sir. ah Sure. My name is Robert Dunn. If you've seen the photo, I'm the one with the with the calm demeanor. like I'm very interested. I'm talking on more of a condenser mic.
00:02:17
Speaker
If you look at the photo, ah that's me. And um what do I say about myself? i am like i Actually, I should point out that both of us ah We both are industry people, film industry people. I don't want to lose listeners just by me saying that.
00:02:34
Speaker
um But I'm on the West Coast. Ron is on the East Coast. but I am L.A. man. Ron is New York man. And um I don't know what else there is to say about me other than my name and me describing my photo.
00:02:49
Speaker
That might be all that's interesting. Yeah, I mean, that's that's that's very deep, Rob. That's that's all you are. it's Yeah, yeah. But actually, oh yeah I will say, so Ron and I know each other from ah high school. Well, actually middle school. We met in middle school.
00:03:04
Speaker
Oh, that was you? West Hernando, yeah. West Hernando. That was you? yeah I only met one kid there, and that must have been you. Wow. The whole time. I think it was West Hernando.
00:03:15
Speaker
You went to West Hernando, right? Yeah, you did. did, yeah. We're discovering things about ourselves. Yeah. Golden Eagles, baby. Yeah. big um And yeah, yeah i must I mean, I didn't have any friends in middle school, so it's fine. It's fine. I'm over it. I'm obviously over it. That's why I brought it up now in my 30s.
00:03:33
Speaker
But ah we we met there and then we did not chat at all. i And and then are we getting are we getting real?
00:03:45
Speaker
No. um But ah yeah, we knew each other mostly.

Growing Up in Florida

00:03:50
Speaker
Yeah. Middle school, high school and Brooksville. Brooksville, Florida, baby. Florida. Got an hour north of Tampa.
00:03:57
Speaker
Yes, yes, that's that's what I say. i don't know if we talked about that. Anytime someone says, where's Spring Hill, where's Brooksville, Iowa? tell people it's hour north of Tampa, yeah. That's what I say, which I don't... Is that accurate? I think That is accurate, yes, maybe. Somebody told me last... It's funny. um Last night, somebody was saying that they're actually going to Spring Hill to visit friends, and they're like, it's about 45 minutes above Tampa. I'm like...
00:04:20
Speaker
Yeah, that's that sounds about... It's more like 52. Yeah, 56. Yeah, I know. Who's counting? Who's counting, right? And you know what's terrible is I don't know the layout of Florida hardly at all. So if someone's like, oh, I'm going to Pensacola, I'm like... It's the panhandle, sir.
00:04:37
Speaker
see I don't know. i don't know. i I know where I lived and I know where Tampa is and Orlando and that's it. I don't think... And and I've never been to Miami. Have you been to Miami? I have been to Miami a couple...
00:04:50
Speaker
It's like, that's like party central. I've never to party. one One was a very short stay and the other one I drove through. I've never really been to Miami. Okay. um Miami seems exhausting.
00:05:03
Speaker
At this age, yeah if I was 22 and single, then yeah, I'd probably love Miami, but I'm 38 and married, so I don't think I'm going to go to Miami unless I feel like I'm going to quit don't.
00:05:14
Speaker
Right. Right,

Miami vs. LA: A Tale of Two Cities

00:05:15
Speaker
right. So let's talk about Miami for a second. um So we're going to be touring in Miami. No, we're not. No, we're not. God. Yeah. ah Would you say Miami is kind of, of all the places that it's hard to keep up a hot image, would you say Miami is that place? And I'm talking about image like...
00:05:37
Speaker
Sex appeal, cars, money. Miami seems to be Things don't have. Episode one. Right. um right Yeah, I would say Miami, it's a challenge. yeah It's definitely a status. you have It's a status type city. Yeah, status is a good word.
00:05:52
Speaker
You know, you're going to have the car. Like, if you want to not be single in Miami, um It feels like, I can't say it is like, but it feels like you have have the car, you have to have the money, you have have the loans.
00:06:05
Speaker
It's almost like, i don't know, like, la you live in LA, it's kind of the same thing out there, right? Yeah. kind of a status. It's interesting because there's definitely that those types, but there's so many.
00:06:17
Speaker
i If I were to talk about l L.A., there are so many struggling artists out here that you kind of find like there's a lot of down-earth people. I think there is a stereotype in L.A. because some of the most down-earth people I met in L.A.,
00:06:32
Speaker
um Maybe that is just a status thing. Maybe if I hung out with ah another kind of crowd, you know, i that has the cars and the money, maybe it'd be a different experience. But yeah, I mean, it's not Entourage for you, is No, no, I actually never watched that show. is like that crazy you You know what the thing is?
00:06:53
Speaker
i i tend to have a bias and nothing nothing down about these shows, like because I hear they're great. i I can't watch shows that are ah about the industry. Because I live that every day.
00:07:06
Speaker
and I'm just kind of like, I just it's just going to make me de depressed. Oh, for example, for example, um the show Barry, which I watched some episodes of that.
00:07:17
Speaker
But episode one, this is a little little in on on l L.A. acting culture. Episode one. He's talking to other actors and they say, hey, let's all go to residuals.
00:07:30
Speaker
Now, residuals, for those who don't know, is a bar in Los Angeles that is kind of the actory bar. It's called residuals because back in the day, I believe if you got um if you got a residual check for I think it was like under five cents or something, you got a free drink with that. So that was their gimmick. And they don't do that anymore because they'd be out of business.
00:07:53
Speaker
But I was like, whoa, I can't handle this show. This is way too real. I know way too many actors that go to residuals. theyre It's like they're cheers.
00:08:03
Speaker
And I'm like, this is too real, man. I can't. I need an escape from my life. So, um yeah. so that's kind of that's why I kind of like don't go to shows there about the industry,

Ron's Journey in Stand-Up Comedy

00:08:15
Speaker
really. Yeah.
00:08:16
Speaker
I'm going to take this time to introduce myself because so moving on, random ta about miami um i just saw a fantastic four and not wow. And yeah, moving on to Ron. My name is Ron Prendamano. Um, I'm a standup comedian in New York city.
00:08:33
Speaker
I performed all over the city and for I think 12, 13 years now, am absolutely nobody. Uh, you've probably never heard of me. Um, I have not heard of you No, you've not heard of me. But yes, I also grew up in the same town that Rob did. i think we lived closer to each other than we realized.
00:08:52
Speaker
ah Yeah. So am, like I said, stand-up comedian in New York. I've been featured on other podcasts such as the Frat Chat podcast hosted by Carlos Garcia. Frat Chat. Frat Chat, yes.
00:09:04
Speaker
Shout out to them. Yeah. Yeah, so, you know, happy to be doing something. Happy to be doing a podcast now. It's my own podcast. Something to do because two white men have never done this before.
00:09:15
Speaker
So this is... ah Yeah. Very excited to be working with Rob, somebody I've worked with never before. I've known pretty much my entire life, you know. So very happy. This is fun.
00:09:26
Speaker
This is fun. So about Fantastic Four. Haven't seen it. Okay. well i was goingnna I was going to interject there and say, ah funny how we never really worked together despite, it was really just us two, aside from maybe ah one or two other people that we know that pursued the business.
00:09:45
Speaker
In our class, i um there I know there were people a grade below us that pursued it, but in our class itself, the only ones that actually pursued it I think, I think, are you and I. um Our friend Brad does improv in Jacksonville. I know that much.
00:10:05
Speaker
And he's had some good gigs throughout the years, but it's not his... It's not his, like, date. It's not his life. You know, he he has another, he has a meaningful job. Yeah. Can I speak for Brad right now? You have to ask him. Go right ahead. yeah Yeah, I just texted him. He said it's cool. um So, no, do you remember, sorry, this is might be a really boring ah thing for me to bring up, but I remember I told him that I loved him the the Charlie Brown play in high school, which I genuinely believe- have no recollection of this. No, no.
00:10:39
Speaker
And here's the thing. I know I'm wrong. I know this is a Mandela effect happening. I would have sworn- that I went to a Charlie Brown play in high school and Brad was the lead. I would have sworn it or he was.
00:10:51
Speaker
And, and I told him that I was like, oh dude, I thought that was actually, and I was genuine when I said it, that I thought it was really cool. And he's like, man, fuck you. And I'm like, what? Like, I thought you were great. So obviously that didn't happen.
00:11:03
Speaker
no I don't remember a Charlie Brown thing that he did. Him and I mostly did things together. on pause.

Engaging the Audience: Future Guests and Interaction

00:11:14
Speaker
Uh, it, um, Like, usually I would, whatever he, there was one production at Stage West Community Playhouse in Spring Hill where I wasn't a part of it because I was visiting my dad in Oregon for the summer, and he was in Music Man Junior.
00:11:31
Speaker
Maybe that's what you're thinking of? I mean, was this on stage at Central? No, no, he did Shapoopy. he said I forget the character name, but he sang Shippooby.
00:11:42
Speaker
And it was ah he did very well with it. I'm very pleased with Shippooby. Did ever tell you I did The Addams Family? No. At the Springstead stage? No. Were you Gomez? No.
00:11:57
Speaker
No, I was ah the, oh crap, the brother. Fester? You were Fester? Yeah, yeah i was young. I did, it was like a musical Addams Family thing.
00:12:09
Speaker
Anyway, um that was just my theater background. God, I've done so many shows. In high school, I don't remember all the shows I did. Yeah, but um yeah, so that that's ah that's the extent of my Spring Hill theater-ness.
00:12:25
Speaker
Oh God. But, uh, yeah, uh, no one knows who we're talking about either. I had to ask. Yeah. Maybe we'll have him on the show if he wants to. Yeah, maybe. I mean, we, we do tend to have guests, right? We will have guests on the show at some point. Oh yeah.
00:12:39
Speaker
We're not just going to we're not just going to rambling for 30 minutes every show. There will be episodes of points to our show. Yeah. I hope so. Jeez. Um, But what we do want to talk about is, oh, actually, it's something I want to bring up ah for listeners here.
00:12:55
Speaker
um What we are going to be putting up um is a questionnaire um where people can write in completely anonymously and ask us questions if you have something that's going on with you. It could be serious. It could be silly.
00:13:14
Speaker
But if you want us to speak on ah something maybe that's happening in your life that you need advice on and you need. You want to hear two white guys. Yeah. and Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. um If it's more. But I would suggest pushing that if it's more personal to you um rather than like, what do you think of about this thing happening in the world? I'm like, ah you can write that, I guess. But yeah, I mean. um I could. Because we have opinions. We have opinions. Yeah, we do. That's the only thing I have left is opinions. That's all we have in this day and age are opinions.
00:13:46
Speaker
We don't have a say. We don't have... It's opinions. That's it. Can a white straight man give an opinion already? Right? Hell yeah. um What's going on? However, this podcast...

The Playful Origins of the Podcast Name

00:13:57
Speaker
A lot of, ah if you've seen any of our ah promotions, but lotto you is it's been a lot of sexual innuendos.
00:14:04
Speaker
ah deep Down with DP is the name of the podcast. It's because his last name is Dunn. My last name is Brandon Mono. It's a play on words. um Coming in your ears, that's a play on words. That might have been a little bit too I don't think it will be, but we will not be renewing porn.
00:14:21
Speaker
warren I don't think we'll be doing that. um However, I do think that's an untapped market. I think we should explore it. I mean, sure. I mean, I've never seen Pirates is very good. I've never seen Pirates, but I hear it's very good. Oh, the better one oh well, funny thing about Pirates shot in Tampa, I believe.
00:14:40
Speaker
was the first porn to be shot on the red camera. I believe it's also the first. See, look, we are talking about porn. This great. Yeah, we are reviewing it. I believe it's the first porn to be an over-million-dollar budget as well.
00:14:52
Speaker
Wow. Yeah. Wow. um And the best part of it was the plot holes. Am I right? Oh, but it's... That is the limit of the comedy you're going to get on the show. Yeah, I've never seen a pornographic film, so I don't know. Oh, I've seen pornographic films.
00:15:11
Speaker
i've I heard people have sexual intercourse in there. Apparently, quite as it's. Yeah. um So we would not talking about porn on a regular basis. All our Christian followers just left us.
00:15:21
Speaker
um Yeah, it's fine. Stick with us. Stick. ah Stick with us. Very good, Rob. yeah Very good. i Yeah. I mean, a lot of the down with DP, we did get a little lost in the sauce um with the marketing. That was all you. I will take no credit for that.
00:15:37
Speaker
but version that was Wow. Okay. This is not a team effort. No, it's not. All you. I love that. um but yeah i did i kind of ran with it and i apologize but you know we're gonna try to promote it in other ways but it was just too hard to resist yeah it's difficult yeah i actually have to explain to somebody what dp was that was a not a comfortable conversation he's like what's dp i'm like you don't you're obviously a happy married man sir uh god bless you yeah i explained to him what that was he's like oh i'm like double
00:16:11
Speaker
Just downplay. downplay but just you know We're just downplaying everything. right But ah just to wrap up, that ah that that form has not been posted yet, but you'll probably see it on our stories um one we're you know when we're ready to do a new episode. email it.
00:16:28
Speaker
Yeah, or you can email at downwithdppodcasts at gmail.com. But um the only thing with the email is you won't we won't be able to. We will know who you are. You could still give us an alias name. We we yeah don't have to use your real name.
00:16:43
Speaker
Yeah, but the forum, if you don't even want us to know who you are, you can fill out that forum. We have no clue who you will be, but and we can address whatever you want to talk about. so I mean, this is your open podcast.
00:16:55
Speaker
We'll talk about difficult things, not difficult things. Try to make light of difficult things, but it's, it's you know, it's, yeah, it's fun. Man, well said, Ron.
00:17:07
Speaker
Really. mean... i mean Have you done podcasts before? I've done quite a few podcasts. Yeah, actually, I have. My first podcast I was ever on was my friend Matthew.
00:17:18
Speaker
I forget his last name. It's escaping me. But he runs a podcast out of Perth, Australia. So I was heard in Australia for a while. Wow. yeah Wow. yeah You know what? um You know what?
00:17:30
Speaker
This is like the equivalent. yeah Like when white people, white people, there's that joke where white people just talk about all the other, that smoke pot, talk about all the other times they were high. feel like that's the equivalent of us talking about previous podcasts. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. I remember when. I'm actually not, I'm actually not allowed to smoke pot according to my day job.
00:17:49
Speaker
I'm a attendant, so I'm not allowed it. to smoke

Cultural Traditions and Personal Stories

00:17:52
Speaker
the marijuana it's just not okay you know i'm not a big pot person either i'm not really a big like i don't really drink that much um but oh that actually that's something interesting ah you were explaining to me before were recording uh the german phrase for like one thing i think it would be kind of cool to do at the end of each podcast is called um The Feierabend beer.
00:18:20
Speaker
It's basically the after work beer. It's a tradition in German culture where, and I'm part German, it's a tradition in German culture where they have a beer after work. So I figure I will open a beer at the end of the podcast crack one open.
00:18:35
Speaker
And yeah, something might catch on, it might not. I don't know. I mean, if I have to go to work, I won't obviously won't be doing it. But, you know, might be something, maybe an advertisement. Yeah, maybe I can do it on the way to work. Yeah, why not?
00:18:48
Speaker
I mean, shit. Yeah. You know, it's it's just okay it's just kind of fun. It's different. You know, i I am someone that doesn't, I don't really, the only time I really drink is if, like, I'm at an outing, like, if I'm around people, which you you saw the last time we met, um that I was doing a thing. I mean, this whole thing was, you know, brought together because of a drunken conversation at a 20-year reunion.
00:19:13
Speaker
That's That's why this is happening. Yes, and and i I did drink at the 20-year reunion. absolutely did. I went a little too... Yeah, I don't know. I was like on... I don't know. I was just feeling good. You were horrible.
00:19:27
Speaker
You were good. Yeah, i I would like to think I'm not someone to get sloppy. sloppy. But yeah, but I definitely was like having fun.
00:19:37
Speaker
um But I remember I definitely don't drink alone. i don't have like, like I remember I had this beer that I got for free at Comic-Con, San Diego Comic-Con.
00:19:48
Speaker
And it was this beer that was given to me at this like Shaun of the Dead pop-up. And I thought it was this because I had like zombies on the can and stuff. And I thought it was a special Shaun of the Dead like beer exclusive to Comic-Con.
00:20:06
Speaker
And it sat in my fridge for like a year. I never opened it. And I was like, maybe I can make like 20 bucks off of this. And I filmed this like TikTok, like Instagram real commercial that I made it like really silly.
00:20:21
Speaker
It was going to be for like Facebook Marketplace. And I filmed this fake commercial of me selling this beer for like 1995. And come to find it was just a beer that you could buy somewhere.
00:20:34
Speaker
It wasn't this exclusive Shaun of the Dead beer. And so I didn't even post it. And I spent all this time editing and filming. It was like I was trying to sell a Bud Light for 20 bucks.
00:20:46
Speaker
And but it maybe I should post it anyway. Like, screw it. That's what LA's Look at that. look at that Oh my God. You become what you hate.
00:20:57
Speaker
I need to, I can't. Was the beer good? Oh no, it was disgusting. But, um but here's the thing though. If I just put a beer on Facebook, like let's just say out of argument, it was an exclusive beer and I could sell It's a collector's item.
00:21:13
Speaker
I'm not just going to say, Hey, here's 20, $20 have this can of beer. No, I'm going to put effort into it. I'm going to, you know, and that, and that's what l LA has done for me. It's given me work ethic, you know? So because you definitely didn't have it growing up. That's for sure.
00:21:28
Speaker
Oh, that's true. Hey, I worked hard at Wendy's. okay Okay. I did work at Wendy's and, um, you worked with Cyndall, right?
00:21:41
Speaker
No, she was McDonald's. No, um, she had a friend that worked at Wendy's who I think was like a Virginia. That was her name, right? for Virginia. She had a friend named Virginia. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. I i didn't work with any of them.
00:21:58
Speaker
Yeah. um And that's all I really did. That's why I got like fat in high school um because or middle school, really. Oh, that's so nice of you. And I

Nostalgia: Movies and Fast Food Memories

00:22:10
Speaker
maybe I am going to give you some real match. Oh, was really nice. Thank you so much. um Which, by the way, Royal Match download at the. um But all I did, because in in Spring Hill, Florida, ah in the early 2000s, there was no Royal Match.
00:22:26
Speaker
Yeah, when there was was no Royal Match, I pretty much just went to the movie theater and then walked from the movie theater to Wendy's. It right next door. and You had to skip. it Yeah, it right next You to past Arby's and get to Wendy's, I think.
00:22:39
Speaker
but Oh, yeah. I was like, no thanks. ah and And that's all I did. And I just ate fast food and went to the movies. But it was the $20 to get you the whole night.
00:22:51
Speaker
pay for the movie, you pay for a McDonald's. Maybe you'll get some ice cream from an ice cream shop around the corner. Like, it was a wonderful time. It was good. You go see Matrix Reloaded, and then you go to one of these. was just talking about wife last night. I've only seen one of the Matrixes.
00:23:05
Speaker
Which one? You've only seen the second I know! I know! Okay. I don't know. I've Okay, we're going to transition into a therapy session right now.
00:23:17
Speaker
I've never seen the first one or the third one. Ronald, listen. The first Matrix movie. Oh, you bet. know what's funny is that that's something I should say.
00:23:29
Speaker
Ron or Ronald? I go by Ron mostly. um Okay. It's funny. I mean, if you call me Ronald, I'm going to respond. It's funny. i I was asked recently, like, you know, I thought you used Junior, because I'm a junior, named after my dad.
00:23:46
Speaker
You used Junior during your, on your stage name. I'm like, no, I've never, it's always been Ron Bradamano. That's always been my name. And my friend goes, well, what if, uh, What if ah your dad starts doing stand-up? I'm like, well, then I'm changing my name entirely.
00:24:03
Speaker
If he wants to do stand-up, fine. I don't think he's going to, but you know he thinks he's fine. But there's that non-zero chance. there iss that there There is a chance, but it's been Ron Prendamano since early days of theater school in New York City. It's been Ron Prendamano.
00:24:20
Speaker
Okay. Well, um, okay, Ronald. So, um, I would suggest seeing the first matrix.
00:24:31
Speaker
Oh, i I did not forget. It is a, it is, I would say it's like a perfect movie. yeah Sure. It's a nearly, I mean, is any movie perfect really, but I would say it's like a perfect movie.
00:24:43
Speaker
It still holds up. I've seen it semi recently. You got to see it. If you care about cinema, Yeah, I'm being that guy. I'm to think of the most perfect movie. Yeah, when's the last time you went to the movies? Oh, God. What you seen?
00:24:58
Speaker
Last time I went to the movies, it was with my wife, and I was at a local theater in Kew Gardens, Queens, and I don't remember what I saw.
00:25:11
Speaker
maybe it wasn't Kew Gardens, maybe it was in... and It was in Queens, I know that, but I don't, because I live there. I don't know what I saw. Don't remember. It was last year, I think.
00:25:25
Speaker
Oh, last year, wow. We don't go to the movies nearly as much as we should. However, the... Do you have... Oh, no, do you have AMCs near you? I would suggest ah getting AMCA lists. She's a Regal member.
00:25:39
Speaker
So we go to Regal. Oh, Regal. Oh, Regal. Okay, cool.
00:25:46
Speaker
Well, ah it kind of forces me to go see movies in the theater, ah and there's one right by me, and it's really nice. um I mean, where you live, everything seems to be right fucking there, that little seven-block radius of California.
00:26:02
Speaker
ah Yeah, I live in a really cool area. I'm very happy where I live. I've always wanted to live here. Really? and Yeah, I've always wanted to

Life in Burbank: From Animation to Statues

00:26:11
Speaker
live here. and it and I just always thought it was too expensive, or and it is, but I found some deal, and ah I live here now. so um But yeah, I live really close really nice- Where in California are I'm in Burbank, California.
00:26:28
Speaker
Yeah, or Burbank. I have a few friends in Burbank that are also active. Oh, cool. um Maybe I know them. But um you see he said you do or you don't.
00:26:41
Speaker
OK, you don't know them. um But ah yeah, i it's also like the hub of animation, which I'm a big ah animation guy. So Nickelodeon's here. Cartoon Network used to be here.
00:26:54
Speaker
um We have DreamWorks is here. Is it DreamWorks or DreamWorks? Yeah, so really cool area. We have statues everywhere. If you look up Burbank Batman statue, ah that's in front of the theater that I go to. going to look it up right now. i think because right now yeah and I think because Burbank is the home of Warner Brothers, home of the Animaniacs, they decided, I assume it's them because who else, ah decided to invest statues of DC characters throughout Burbank. Burbank Batmans.
00:27:29
Speaker
really everything Yeah, and it's really nice. They're really nice statues. So we have this awesome Batman statue. There's a Wonder Woman statue, and there's a Green Lantern statue.
00:27:42
Speaker
No Superman yet. I don't know what they're going to Oh, that statue. That's pretty fucking badass. Oh, yeah, it's awesome. His thighs are really different. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:27:53
Speaker
he does he he He definitely lifts. He does his squats. Is this just a random Batman, or do they model this after and and an actor? No, I think it's just... yeah That's not's the theater you go to? That AMC?
00:28:08
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I'm over here in fucking Queens. and well Listen, New York is wonderful. I love New York. I've been new York for 20 years I love New York. I love New York, too.
00:28:20
Speaker
yeah When did you move to Burbank? California? um Probably 2008 or so. to New in 2005. Right after we graduated high school, I moved to New York. at oh five right after we got high school Wow, that quick, huh? Yeah, October 2005, I moved to New York, and I never came back. Jeez. Okay, because I went to school for animation in Tampa for a year or so, and then I realized I was, you know, we were talking about, was like animation, video games, and I started to ask more questions about who's writing the stories and who's doing the voices rather than like
00:28:56
Speaker
how do I animate this? And I, and I used to animate just for fun in high school. don't know if anyone remembers a website called new ground. Oh, great. Oh i yeah.
00:29:07
Speaker
To this day, my cartoons are still up on that site. Um, yeah, I got, I got like my friends in high school to do voices and it's terrible, but, and anything um No, no.
00:29:19
Speaker
But I will say that website, it was it predates YouTube, I believe. um What was cool about that site is if you uploaded a cartoon that you made, it had to get voted to be uploaded. So you couldn't just upload it and it's up.
00:29:35
Speaker
So if you have anything that gets up there, it's like, oh, you feel like you earned it. It's pretty cool. So, um yeah, but I went to school for animation and then ah yeah then decided, wait, i think I like the acting way more. and made the move.
00:29:49
Speaker
So, but you tell me more about like, because you know, you do stand up and was that the thing that you always wanted to do? Was that like, I've always wanted to be an actor. I've always, I've always enjoyed, um sure you remember, I was always one of the funny guys in high school. always liked making people laugh.

Challenges and Techniques in Stand-Up Comedy

00:30:08
Speaker
I think that's all you meant. I always liked making people laugh. So that, that, um, that's, uh, funny. it's ah It's something I've always wanted to do i originally went the acting route when I went when i first started. i you know Theater, film, all that good stuff.
00:30:25
Speaker
And then somehow I took a stand-up workshop at the New School in New York City. And I got into stand-up. And then I met friends through stand-up. My friend Victor, who was doing stand-up at the time, and um he put me on a show. And that's kind of, it just kind of,
00:30:45
Speaker
went from there now i i still do so i still do shows i have a show uh august 27th yes i'm putting that in 27th cool um i think the show's at 7 30. uh so yeah i still do stand-up um i i would love to would love to get a voiceover that is something i've been slowly working that is You do have a very unique voice. I mean this as a compliment.
00:31:10
Speaker
You do. You do, and I really like it. it's Some people think I sound like Charlie Day. i i hear it. I hear it. Like, I hear it, Charlie Day, but i i um I also hear the differences.
00:31:24
Speaker
um Like, my wife doesn't think I sound like Charlie Day. ah She just thinks I sound annoying, but I don't. I don't hear. I hear it. I don' i hear the... like my My voice obviously changes pitches crazy, and and I have rasp because of the... Yeah, so does mine. um Yeah. He kind of sounded like... ah What's his name? ah Yeah, that's good. That's good. Thank you.
00:31:51
Speaker
Thank you. Yeah, I... And the rasp in my voice comes from a... I have nodes on my vocal cords, calluses on my vocal cords, if you will, and...
00:32:02
Speaker
they They've said to me, that like, I've had doctors say to me, like, you know we could shave them off, like Julie Andrews did, Adele has done, they're famous singers, I'm not, bullshit. So, I didn't do it because I would, they said you most likely have scar tissue and sound the same.
00:32:19
Speaker
So I'm like, well, fuck it. And if I end up sounding like Harvey Fierstein, that's not the worst thing in the world. i love Harvey Fierstein. So... But what if like you end up if they did shave it, you could be like the next Sinatra. You could have like the voice of iol we thought that.
00:32:35
Speaker
Yeah. no yeah Yeah. Like that. Yeah. fuck a dick Anyway, yeah damn So question about standup. ah How do you personally, because I get so many, my algorithm is basically just standup.
00:32:52
Speaker
How do you handle hecklers? are Are you, do you feel like you're on the spot? Are you good? Like thinking on your feet? And that takes time. It takes time. i haven't always,
00:33:03
Speaker
been good on my feed mean i've been heckled to the point where the host actually ended up taking me off stage like it was not good i tried to recover from a heckler and was just a really really drunk guy and i tried to recover from it and i tried to do a joke and i was gonna do a joke about my grandma and the lady in the audience goes my grandma's dead took the wind out of my sails i was fucking done i couldn't recover now if i get a heckler yeah i'm not I can handle It's not a big deal.
00:33:35
Speaker
People don't heckle as much as they used to. Like in the shows I do, we yeah rarely get a heckler. It happens sometimes, but most people are pretty respectful. Also, I think people are afraid that the comedian's going to rip them apart.
00:33:52
Speaker
So right you know you want to fuck with the guy with the microphone, go right ahead.
00:33:58
Speaker
Well, here's another thing, too. I can't remember their name, but well, there's a few actually where their whole social media presence is them.
00:34:11
Speaker
fighting hecklers. Yeah, that's a few comedians. And I, yeah, and I'm just like, how are they plants? Like, how ah how is their whole, like, social media presence just them going at it with hecklers? Like, it just seems like fake.
00:34:27
Speaker
There's a few of them out there. It's all I post are them with a crowd reaction and stuff. um Crowd work is great. um it's It's more popular nowadays. It seems online that most people think crowd work is stand-up, and it's not.
00:34:44
Speaker
like you You should have an actual routine of jokes that actually work and make people laugh. But like if I'm hosting a show, oh, hell yeah, doing I'm definitely playing with you. You have to.
00:34:55
Speaker
It's also good for the comedians because if they are a little more crowd work friendly, they get to know the... like get to know the um The audience. buts So you know you're kind of working together when you're doing crowd work.
00:35:05
Speaker
But the comedians, that's all they do is crowd work. I have to question Because I'm like, are you really a comedian? yeah Or you just do crowd work? Now, those guys that are doing just crowd work, or it seems like they're doing just crowd work, obviously they have more following than I do, and I'm content with that.
00:35:22
Speaker
But you know as far as the art of stand-up comedy, you've got to have routine. You've got to have your jokes, you've got to know what works, you got to be able to get up on stage and have a routine ready to go. It's also good, I do not work clean, but it's good to work clean.
00:35:40
Speaker
It's good to have you know a set, a clean set, because if you ever do the Tonight Show, if they exist anymore, you're not going to go up there and say, cunt every five seconds.
00:35:54
Speaker
you know you You need to be clean. so it's yeah And you can't do crowd work.
00:36:00
Speaker
Right. Well, that's an interesting thing because i was actually going to transition into that, that back in the day, you know, 80s, 90s, the goals of a stand up as far as like if you cared about getting to another level, it was either getting on The Tonight Show or getting a sitcom. Sitcom would probably be the biggest goal.
00:36:19
Speaker
But nowadays, what do you think that is? So I think it's doing late night shows. That's that's still a goal. That's still awesome. Like, I had a friend, she read Liz Glazer, she recently did The Tonight Show.
00:36:33
Speaker
Okay, and oh cool she killed it, as to be expected. She's fucking hilarious. um Yeah, so, like, and and I was actually talking to a a pilot that I was working with, and he knew of her.
00:36:47
Speaker
So it is good to get on those things. Absolutely. It's not like in the 80s, 90s where you did Johnny Carson and you were a household name tomorrow. It's not so much like that anymore. But, I mean, it's still a freaking honor to do those shows.
00:37:02
Speaker
I've had friends with Tony and Colbert. Tonight Show, you want it. As a comedian, that's a huge goal. You want to do that. Yeah, sitcoms are great, but, you know,
00:37:15
Speaker
Well, let's be honest. TV's not what it was back in the 90s. and Right, right. it's But, you know, in a hell you have and you yeah. If you can do The Tonight Show, that's awesome. That is something that will stick on your resume forever.
00:37:26
Speaker
and then that And even if you're not that famous, like, if you've done The Tonight Show, that automatically gets you a better spot on the show. Featuring Tonight. Oh, yeah. a yeah Like, I've done public television.
00:37:39
Speaker
Like, you know, I've had a TV credit for God knows how long. Okay? but But nobody knows shows. Nobody watches Manhattan neighborhood news. Nobody knows. So.
00:37:49
Speaker
h Right. Yeah. It's definitely a goal. You want to be able to do that stuff. Absolutely. Yeah, because, like, ah I mean, I guess they still do it because it was, like, the George Carmichael show, and, um like, there they used to give comedians their own sitcom, and used to be named after them.
00:38:08
Speaker
George Lopez. From Newhart, Seinfeld. Yeah. um Things like that. like Daniel Tosh, Florida Floridian as well, ah he had Tosh.0. Oh, I didn't know that.
00:38:22
Speaker
He had um He had Tosh.0s, and that wasn't necessarily like a sitcom. It was just him making fun of internet videos, but it was a platform for him.
00:38:35
Speaker
And yeah, it's... Comedy's tough. It's a tough industry. In my opinion, it's probably the toughest part of the industry is doing stand-up. Yeah, I think definitely comedy went through a weird phase in the last few years, but I feel like it's kind of finding its footing as of recently. mean, the pandemic us.
00:38:53
Speaker
I mean, the pandemic truly killed us. We were not able to... You know, do our craft. And, you know, yeah, you did festivals online, you did stuff online, but get the us doing comedy is having the audience react right then and there.
00:39:08
Speaker
It's the only part of the business where you know exactly how you're doing in the moment. You don't have to wait for the review the next day. You know exactly how well you did by the last. So you want, you yeah like, it's it's so tough. And the grind is, it's a tough grind, man.
00:39:26
Speaker
It really is. Comedy is, I mean, every part of the industry is a grind. Comedy is, it's rough, man. I mean, I'm i'm amazed that I've stuck with it for as long as I have. And I love every second of it. I love getting up on stage and telling jokes, making myself vulnerable. I mean, it's fun. I've met some of my best friends are through comedy.
00:39:46
Speaker
Like, I love Stan. But it's tough. It's tough. It's an art form that is all you. You are the performer, the writer, and you might have to dodge some hefty lures along the way. It's tough. And you don't get I'm happy to say that I am a paid comedian. I have been paid multiple times. and that that is To say that you are paid doing what you love, that's tough.
00:40:13
Speaker
Because not everybody gets that. Not everybody gets to do that. You know what I mean? Like, we're we're very, I'm a very lucky. i can sort of but Even if I get paid $10, I'm very lucky. I just did something I love to do when I got paid.
00:40:26
Speaker
Okay? Now when I get a few hundred bucks, that's fantastic. Am I at the thousand bucks yet? No, I haven't gotten that. I mean, get paid anything is just fucking awesome. Yeah, like when I got i got paid $7 million for feature. Was it really $7 million? You know that.
00:40:42
Speaker
was like, I that? No. Fuck yourself. Can you imagine? I just like nonchalated. Yeah, you know, I got paid $7 million. It was a little bit low, but like. There was nobody telling you how well you did. That's okay.
00:40:54
Speaker
It's fine. I wish. got nice hair. It's fine. Hey, yeah, it's got to be the hair. Yeah. But, um yeah and you know what, there are so many sitcoms that I didn't even know existed.
00:41:07
Speaker
And then you look and they're like on season five, season six. And I'm like, who's watching this? Especially the streaming platforms. Like, I can't keep up. Yeah. Yeah. So, ah um like, I just finished, speaking of Newhart, don't know if you watch What We Do in the Shadows. I don't. I've been told to watch but i Okay.
00:41:27
Speaker
um Spoilers. They do like a parody of, do you know about the Newhart ending? The like famous Newhart ending where it was all a dream? No. Oh yes. i Yes. I do. Yes. it is is not a yes I They, they kind of pull that. ah Basically ah there was a sitcom. I forgot which one came out first. Bob Newhart or Newhart.
00:41:50
Speaker
But at the ah the final episode of that sitcom, he wakes up from a dream and he's like, oh, I thought I'm going to mess it up. And I don't think there's going to be diehard fans in Newhart listening to this.
00:42:01
Speaker
But I don't know if he was like a doctor or something. And he he wakes up in the very last episode and he's like, oh, I had this dream that I was like a therapist and blah, blah, blah. And we were doing this. And then he came out with a second show where he was that guy from his dream.
00:42:15
Speaker
And the ending of that show, he had a dream that he was the guy from his previous show. And so what we do in the shadows did like a take on that. needa And that's my little shadows review for all the listeners who are big fans.
00:42:29
Speaker
um Seven listeners. But krista hey, hey, seven listeners for the first episode. I will be ticked. I absolutely will be ticked.
00:42:40
Speaker
ah Oh, yeah dude yeah. Hey, all seven of you. we We love every single one of you, and we all think you should download War of the Match. You're really pushing this.
00:42:51
Speaker
Yeah, I know. Obviously, it's a I'm joking, Ron. I'm not actually getting paid by them. I i would let you know. fucking better. Jesus Christ.
00:43:05
Speaker
That's true. um But ah yeah, I guess um we, where I think this is pretty, I feel pretty good about this one. I mean, you know, I got into the art of standup, which is something I, you know, I love talking about.
00:43:19
Speaker
You know, we talked about the bronze Batman statue. We introduced ourselves where we live. don't know. Any current events you want to talk about? Any news things?
00:43:30
Speaker
I mean, I don't know if we'll get too political on this podcast. I think we will once in a while. I do enjoy my politics, but yeah it's kind of hard not to talk about. let me point the Right. blood recommend skipping alcohol and an earlier start treatment.
00:43:47
Speaker
Fuck off. ah Mississippi may require age varication, parental consent for social media.
00:43:59
Speaker
ah Okay. I mean, how is that any different from like, are you over 18? Rabbits with horns in Colorado are being called Frankenstein bunnies. Here's why.
00:44:11
Speaker
I mean, this this is off a website right now. This is off a popular website. I'm not even naming them because you're doing it. But it's Taylor Swift. No, not on the onion. That's the sad part.
00:44:22
Speaker
Taylor Swift enters her showgirl era.
00:44:27
Speaker
Oh, yeah. So she was on a podcast with her BF and announced her new album. Swifties out there? Yes. Yes. um There's no release date as of yet, but.
00:44:41
Speaker
Jesus. Oh, yeah. Well, she's saying. I mean, she's not. yeah she We sponsored by Taylor Swift. She's like, I need more marketing. Let's get the Down with podcast. This is local for me.
00:44:54
Speaker
Do Democrats have a Zoran Mamdani product?
00:44:59
Speaker
I don't know what those words mean. Zoran Mamdani is running for mayor. He's on the Democratic ticket in New York City. Oh. oh i heard Zorro. Okay. Zoran.
00:45:11
Speaker
Zordon. Zordon, you Power Rangers nerd. No. I know. I'm sorry. I had it. Alpha 5. Yeah, I would too. He's so wise. al

00:47:03

00:47:20
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Yeah, you sound like you are in a aund tunnel. um Yeah, no, I dropped my little board thing. Messed with the echo thing. It happened. Oh.
00:47:31
Speaker

00:48:07
