D20 radio, your game is roll.
00:00:58
Speaker
Hello, everybody, and welcome to the second episode of our Dusters and Dragons one shot, GMed by the wonderful GM Chris of the Order 66 and the Forge podcast here on D20 radio. I am Eric. Nobody else is here right now because we recorded this all in one go.
00:01:19
Speaker
But just wanted to give you a big thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy the show and I will talk to you at

Humorous Encounter with a Creature

00:01:25
Speaker
the end. I want to shoot this slug. I want this thing to die. It's horrible and I hate it. You can shoot it immediately. Absolutely. Yeah, you can. It looks up and goes. One pistol shot and it's it's there's a whole it kind of splatters everywhere. And at this point, who's in the splash zone?
00:01:45
Speaker
Oh, dude, like old Elijah looks up with I mean, and the closest to him is Grumman Mickey. He looks up at the two of you with confusion, fear and extreme pain in his eyes. And at that point, he just passes out immediately. Well, I never. I do declare. OK, well, the twirls the pistol around, tucks it back in its holster.
00:02:14
Speaker
Well, anyone know what that was? No, I don't know. You might maybe with a knowledge new world check. Yeah, let's give it a shot. Let me set your difficulty really quick. This is not good. This is going to be hard. This is going to be a three purple difficulty check that you've got. OK, let's. Oh, sorry. Hang on one sec. Could use a story point to upgrade your check, Jeff. Yeah, I'm considering it.
00:02:46
Speaker
Yeah, let's do that. I'll do that. And then I'm sorry, do I have to do something manually now that I've flipped the story point to upgrade it? Well, OK. Why are you? Are you making the check or is Lily making the check? I I said the words. Does anybody know? Maybe I miss I miss her. I'm sorry, I was I thought it was a question lately was making a new knowledge, new world check. I can.
00:03:13
Speaker
I mean, Jeff, you're welcome to as well. I have the difficulty set, and I've got your upgrade noted if you'd rather. But you have a scholar who's very practiced at studying the myths and creatures of the frontier.

Exploring the Creature's Mythical Connections

00:03:28
Speaker
Well, okay. In that case, when I said, does anybody know what that was? I mean, I don't know. I didn't read the character sheets that weren't mine. I said, well, let me check. There we go. Let's do that way.
00:03:40
Speaker
So if you want to keep the story point spent, you can, or I can return it to you, not a problem, but I've got your difficulty set. If you want to make a knowledge new world check, which would be at the very bottom of your skills section, Trev, you can just click that little button and you should be good to go. Okay. All right. Was that good? Yes. Yes. That was three successes with a threat.
00:04:08
Speaker
Oh, no. Does this get in me? Not for one threat, no. But I'm going to I'm going to stick I'm going to stick that threat in my pocket for just a moment. Oh. So if if she's like stooping over this horrible thing that just came out of.
00:04:28
Speaker
I'm sorry, do we, do we know the press? Oh, Elijah. Oh, no, it's old, old Elijah. I'm sorry. Old Elijah. The townsfolk always thought it was weird. His parents named him old Elijah, but, you know, he had a rough childhood.
00:04:41
Speaker
Uh, then Matthias is standing just very close, uh, looking over Laelia's shoulder. Um, and with a, just with a hand on his gun, in case this thing comes back to life or both, all the pieces of it, I don't know. This is a horrible thing.
00:05:00
Speaker
Yeah, well, this thing is definitely a fae blood and your blue stone pistol made that abundantly clear when you hit it. But Laelia, this is absolutely fascinating to you. So Trevor, like you've never, like, this is wild and crazy. You succeeded. You've heard tell of similar things before.
00:05:22
Speaker
Um, going back to some of the oldest myths of the old world, and some of the stories, and that's one of your fields of study is trying to connect some of the extreme
00:05:32
Speaker
ancient ancient legends that all people thought were just wives tales of the old world to the truth that people are now experiencing in the new world, right? Now, you've never encountered anything personally like this before. But there you've, you've, you've seen historical and literary reference before of certain fey blooded creatures or fey creatures that can actually take over or control another person's body or mind.
00:06:01
Speaker
In the stories, they were always horrific, horrific creatures that would sort of implant their seed in others and allow them to do their bidding. Do I know the name or just I know of it?
00:06:14
Speaker
You've heard you've heard you've heard tell with a threat with the threat you've got. You know, that's a good use for the threat. Yeah, you don't know anything specific. But but you've you've you've heard you've heard tell of it. And it's something you could easily relate to your friends and basically say, you know, you know, this is this is definitely a wild creature of some type. But you would know enough to know that this isn't the creature. It's it's sort of a seed from something much larger and more dangerous.
00:06:44
Speaker
Okay, well I think Laelia probably has a little sketchbook, so she's probably writing notes down, looking at it and sketching it out as best she can remember before it was blown to bits. And she says,
00:07:00
Speaker
Well, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd see one of these just right in front of me. I've heard tale of all these creatures, but never really thought they truly existed. But here I am, right in front of one. Well, it used to be one anyway. Thank you, Matthias. You're welcome.
00:07:15
Speaker
One what? Well, see, for the life of me, I can't remember the name, but there are these, these creatures that are, they're fate type creatures that can possess a body. And this is, this seems to be kind of a seed or like a young, young version of one. Yeah, in your research, they had the power to, like, implant seeds of themselves and at close range, even
00:07:45
Speaker
like dominate the minds of the weak-willed. Oh. So, wait, was this like the actual creature or like a seed? A seed. Okay. From what I can gather, this was a seed that was planted to kind of control the mind of old Elijah? Mm-hmm. This is all truly fascinating.
00:08:14
Speaker
Don't mind me, I'm just going to sketch out the rest of this mess. Okay. I think while checking all the lages of vitals, Mickey might say something like, well, this casts a lot of the, uh, the new goings on in a different context, doesn't it? Um, what with, uh, uh, possessions as it were going around, maybe I really ought to go look in on that scale gang.
00:08:41
Speaker
So everyone stares, old Elijah sits there, clearly injured, um, unconscious in a pool of muck and slime. Uh, Matthias wants to sort of get down on Elijah's level. What's the last thing you, what's the last thing you remember? He's unconscious. Oh, he's unconscious. Okay. May I try to heal him?
00:09:05
Speaker
Do you want to use magic or good old fashioned medicine? If you want to use a medicine check? Oh, by the way, encounters over. You can roll a strain recovery. I think you're the only one who took some strain grum. I did also get so anyone who wants to roll, do a strain recovery. That's right, you did. Anyone wants to do a strain recovery role, you can either give me a discipline or cool check your choice. Yeah, recovers to strain right there. Glorifin.
00:09:34
Speaker
Back to zero. Oh, good Lord. Yeah, grums disciplines insane. So yeah, that heals all of your strain, Randy. So yeah, do you want to so you can you can now suffer another two strain if you wish to use some magic or you can just try a simple medicine check. The difficulty on it to revive him would be two purple dice. Let's just go ahead and do a regular medicine.
00:10:01
Speaker
All right, let me set your difficulty. It's set. Go for it. All right, that's a success with a threat. Here's how we're going to play that out. I'm going to give you guys the chance to have one meaningful interaction with this person before he passes out again.
00:10:27
Speaker
Um, is, is how we're going to do it. Uh, so Phillip, you had said you were down there trying to, uh, yeah, if he, if he seems to become lucid for a moment, then Matthias is going to ask, uh, Elijah, where old Elijah, where's the, uh, what's the last thing you remember? He says, uh, uh, one of the,
00:10:54
Speaker
One of the scale boys, one of the scale boys, it came into the forge. He was right behind me. Mattias is up and out the door. Ken, I would like to make a skullduggery check if I can. Does the prospector's money bag weigh more than my money bag as I have it in my hand?
00:11:23
Speaker
Uh, how much money do you have? 215. No, Lord. Okay.

Pursuit and Boarding of the Train

00:11:29
Speaker
Well, then I toss him his coin purse back. Well, he's probably got about 50 or $60 in there. It's that's not a lot. It's not a small sum.
00:11:38
Speaker
Yeah, but everybody saw Elijah, old Elijah take it from him and toss it to me and everybody's like looking. So yeah, Glorfin doesn't want to like outright steal from this guy. At least where people can tell if his coin persuade more, I was definitely going to try to toss a mind back and keep his but. All right. Anything else you want to ask Elijah before he passes out? You've got a few precious moments left. Um. So Philip, you asked him what's the last thing he remembers.
00:12:07
Speaker
Right. And it was a snow-scale boy coming up behind him. Huh. After that, Elijah's like, and then, and then she, she, she needed, she needed things. She. She. Yeah. She needed, she needed things. How did you, who told you that? She did. Who is she?
00:12:37
Speaker
Well, congratulations, Matias, you shot a lady. He gets very confused when he hears Grum say that. He just kind of looks, he says, she, like he doesn't quite know. And then this slight realization dawns on him. He says that the carriage, the carriage.
00:13:03
Speaker
And he looks at Mickey, he's looking at you like, deftly serious, like with one of those like, like dude looks and is like, it says just says the carriage. And then he passes out. At that moment, you guys hear a loud whistle as the iron carriage engine has unexpectedly started up. I think I know which carriage he was talking about.
00:13:31
Speaker
Was that really necessary, Glorfin? I think we all... I sensed a moment. I think we should go. Hey, really quickly, since I know this saloon like the back of my hand I grew up here, does it have...
00:13:47
Speaker
Is it like there's beds boarding house style as well? At this point after he passes out, Greta has already hopped the bar. And she's just like, everybody back. And several others are bodily hauling old Elijah on top of the bar at this point. And she's kind of slapping him around the face and they're trying to tend to him.
00:14:11
Speaker
Don't we have a doctor in town? Mickey just walked and watches her slap him good one time. It does. Well, she's got a handle. I might go check on this train or this carriage. And so it's like he says the carriage. They haul him up on top of the bar as soon as he passes out. You guys hear the whistle of the carriage engine start up. And then from the back of the saloon, you see an older elf. Great kind of grizzled old elf. He stands up. He's wearing what looks like a conductor's cap and he goes, my carriage.
00:14:46
Speaker
All right, let's hightail it. As everybody's running out, Glorfin shouts behind him, everybody saddle up if you want to see another exciting display of the spur bottom boys. Wow. Did he just name us that?
00:15:05
Speaker
That's not the first time. Glorfin's done that. Matias is already out of the out of the saloon and has thoroughly distanced himself from any reference to the spur bottom boys. You're in on it. Nope. You are wrong. I'm sorry guys. We bet the name of the group in the game we played and I lost. Matias's dime store novel will be a solo adventure.
00:15:29
Speaker
So at this point, I mean, Grum, you're also kind of outside, racing past you and shoulder to shoulder at this point, coming through the double doors is Matthias. You guys can see in the distance at the edge of the town, it's about three, 400 yards away, you can see the steam engine of the iron carriage begin to fire up and that engine is starting to move. Are there horses? I don't know, are there horses?
00:15:54
Speaker
I would like to spend a story point and say there are a sufficient, can I say there's a sufficient number of horses tied up outside the saloon? I think, yeah, I think you guys would have, you know, they're probably half a dozen or more horses, maybe not yours, but half a dozen or more horses tied up outside the saloon, sure. Can you really own a horse? Yes. A pixie goat describes to you anarcho- It's anarcho-syndicalism. Communism.
00:16:25
Speaker
Matias throws himself onto a horse. Well, Philip, if you'd be so kind as to spend a story point. Yes. Yes, I will do that. All right. So did it go? Yes, it did. Yeah, it did. All right. So yeah, we're at three and three. OK, so so so Grom, you see Matias haul himself onto a horse and you guys can see this as well and you hear the engine outside. What are the other four of you doing?
00:16:54
Speaker
I mean, Glorfin makes his proclamation and then runs outside to saddle up as well. Saddling up. Let's go. I mean, I feel like I'm following Mateus. I think it's so exciting. I think Mickey got on her horse. That is her horse because she's the sheriff. She has a horse concurrently with Mateus, if not like right after. Like we had the same thought we were standing in the same place. We don't.
00:17:23
Speaker
Miki doesn't necessarily care if anybody comes with her. She's not waiting on Gordon to hop on, especially now that he's trying to get the town to follow to watch. She doesn't. That's not a public safety issue, she thinks. So that part, Matias is entirely in favor. Well, they need to know the stories of the spur bottom gang there. I made it. We don't guys be boys, but we can be the gang. All right. So the five of you terrible last name. Why is that your last name?
00:17:56
Speaker
The five and I can't be in a gang. I'm a cop. What's your problem? At some point, we need the origin story of that name. We didn't know how you became spur bottom. Oh, I could tell you, but anyway, what's up, Chris? The five of you have saddled up. You're on horses racing down towards the edge of town at this point. The the iron carriage has already started moving and is taking off down the track. OK.
00:18:23
Speaker
Now it's heading deeper into the frontier at this point. You guys are a deep frontier town, but the iron carriage goes on for several hundred kilometers further, you know, throughout the frontier into various other frontier stops and towns, but it's heading deeper and starting to pick up steam. So what's the plan? Matias' plan is to board the train. So he's going to try and pull the old, you know, ride up along till there's a ladder conveniently on one side of a car and grab it.
00:18:54
Speaker
Sounds like a good idea to me. Just so I'm aware, are we gaining on the train or is it reached full speed now and we're actually going to lose it if we don't make a move? It's ramping up. I want to get a sense of what you guys are planning on doing and then we're going to get into a skill challenge to figure out how things progress. Yeah, I'm boarding the train. Okay, so the goal is to board the train. Are any of you wanting to stay on your horses and follow or are all of you trying to board the train?
00:19:24
Speaker
No, Glorfin's starting to realize that saving a train and robbing a train are suspiciously similar. So he's just going to go with his instincts and hop on the train. Yeah. I think I'm just begrudgingly following the group. So it's going to be easy to jump onto a train with a hoop skirt. And so that's my question from Lelya's standpoint. Is Lelya going to be following on horseback or is she going to try and board the train as well?
00:19:53
Speaker
Now she's going to try and board the train. So if the train picks up enough speed, we're not going to be able to catch it on horseback. I'm assuming. Correct. You guys are going to have to book it. My thing is if we stop the train, you catch up to it, but also trains are easy to find. You just have to follow the tracks.
00:20:18
Speaker
Well, let's see it. Let's see how this goes. So at this point, I'm going to be calling from some very specific checks from all of you in order to get to this train. Now, I want to say I'm going to be calling for some very specific checks. That's a bit of an exaggeration. We are entering what's called a skill challenge. All right, which means that you guys are going to be
00:20:39
Speaker
around the table suggesting a check that you'd like to perform that's going to aid in this challenge. The goal here is to catch up with the train and to board it, all right, before it reaches full speed.
00:20:48
Speaker
Now, some of the suggested checks that I might recommend, those might be easier difficulty, would be some checks like riding, okay? Some checks like resilience, vigilance, okay? Which is the skill that's used for initiative when you're surprised, but also the constant state of alertness or caution. Coordination, another great one I might suggest. Or athletics, if you wanna try and board the train.
00:21:16
Speaker
Um, but you can suggest any action and any skill check that you want, and we'll figure out what the difficulty is as we go. You guys as a team are going to have to meet a certain number of uncancelled successes before a certain number of failed checks. So Jeff, you have, what's up? I just realized I, I, I, the, the one that I would like to use. So I was going to say, Hey, if nobody else, if you're still figuring out, I would be happy to go first, but you tell me, I'm sorry.
00:21:45
Speaker
Well, you spoke, what do you want to do? Okay, so I think that a big part of this is going to be that that Mickey and her horse have a good relationship and this horse isn't going to spook as it gets closer to this train and the sounds and the scariness. So I would like to use vigilance as a representation of my will being transferred through this horse through training and time spent together that they're not going to spook.
00:22:17
Speaker
That's interesting. What you described, though, is very much writing to a T. OK, that's right. Well, I wanted to let somebody else use writing, but I have got it. It's not like once I want once one of you uses a skill, the other can't use it. OK, well, then, yeah, obviously, obviously it's writing. I was just trying to finesse it a little bit to use a different check. So I'll do writing. I would like to use vigilance to be able to pick out a primal location for us to be able to board.
00:22:45
Speaker
I don't know about pick out, but vigilance would be more like you come across the prime location and decide to act while you can. Cooler perception would be more what you described, but let's start with Jeff's check first. Jeff, with what you described, this is going to be a basic writing check. We're looking at one purple and one red is your difficulty that I have set. Yeah, I'm okay with that. Okay. Nice.
00:23:12
Speaker
Nice. Yeah. That is three successes towards Jell's total with one advantage. So narratively speaking, yeah, Mickey, man, you know, you got your hog legs strapped, you know, strapped to your back and you're just like galloping towards the train as it takes off down the track. I mean, you know, dust is flying and the horse and you are just synergizing and it's like, it's like you're racing, doing barrel racing together. It's just amazing. Like when you were a kid, you've also rolled one advantage. What would you like to do with that?
00:23:42
Speaker
Um. You could pass a boost to the next person to go. Oh, boost do we have for some reason that boost were only advantage, but they do have successes. So, yeah, let's just boost the next guy. All right. So. So, yeah, you guys see Mickey taking off and you're rapidly approaching the train. Who's going to go next? I was planning on riding as hard as I could to get there. All right. Same ride check with a boost die that I have recorded to go for it.
00:24:08
Speaker
Which is a success with an advantage and a despair So yeah, you're catching up heavily with with with Mickey and you guys at this point are approaching the train rather rapidly We're gonna come to your
00:24:24
Speaker
I'm going to put that despair in my pocket for just a moment. Um, it's going to come into play later in this challenge. That's like the worst thing and save it for later. What do you want to do with your advantage? Do you also want to pass a boost? Uh, yes, I would absolutely like to pass a boost. I'm obviously showing everyone what true flamboyant riding looks like. Uh, and, and exactly how you should attempt to leap onto a train.

Revealing the Train's Mysterious Cargo

00:24:51
Speaker
Well then I'd like to take advantage of that boost. Following my example will obviously assist. Okay, so you say, do you want to take advantage of that boost? Yes. What are you suggesting? Laelia does. So Matthias just, did he just hop on the train or was he doing it again? I think I'm just caught up to the train. At this point, they're just catching up to the train. Okay, then that's, I'm going to do the same. All right, well that'll be a ride check from you and I've got your difficulty and your boost set.
00:25:22
Speaker
and ride is riding, okay. I have a rank in that, I think. You do? That sounds good. Oh! Oh, nice!
00:25:33
Speaker
Okay, wow. That hoop skirt. Come on. So good. So so this is going to be this is going to be interesting. And, and Randy, I'm going to come to you in just a moment because you you'd said vigilance at this point with the narrative the way it's going. I think that you guys have all raced up there and you're you're you're alongside the train. So here's how we're going to play this out. I'm going to pull up my despair at this point and we're gonna decide what you're going to do with your triumph there, Trev.
00:25:58
Speaker
So at this point, you guys have caught up to the train. You can see there are two figures on the train and Jeff, Mickey recognizes both of them immediately. They are both scurly, spurious members of the scale gang, okay?
00:26:15
Speaker
They appear to have that same glassy eyed monotonous look about them. One of them is in the conductor's compartment and is pushing the train ahead. The other is in the coal compartment and actually has a pistol drawn pointed in y'all's general direction.
00:26:31
Speaker
Additionally, you guys can see as you approach the train that several of the passenger cars have all been decoupled and left back in town. And instead, these guys have actually loaded up several different cars. There is a flatbed car that appears to be containing a ton of local mining equipment and other excavation equipment. And then there is at the very end, a huge cart that is filled with probably about half a ton of raw bluestone ore.
00:27:02
Speaker
that these guys have pulled. But with my despair that I put in my pocket earlier, as you guys approach, he's going to see you and is going to pull a lever on the cold cart, which is going to open one of the side panels and start spilling coal out, which is going to slam directly into Laelia's horse.
00:27:22
Speaker
I thought I did a good thing. You did do a good thing, but this is me using my despair. It's going to slam into your horse, and your horse is going to go tumbling head over heels, and you are going to be flying out of the saddle. Now, you have a triumph. What do you want to do with it? I can fly. No, I'm kidding. Not die? What should I? Go ahead.
00:27:51
Speaker
Can I suggest you put this protective thing on Matthias? Is there a way with the triumph for her to like, I don't know, catch Matthias's arm or something like that and swing onto his horse at some, I don't know. That's, uh, that's totally reasonable for a triumph. He, you know, you could reach down, he could reach out, grab you as your horse falls and pull you up. So he's riding back, you're riding back along behind him. Um,
00:28:22
Speaker
I like another option is you could fly out of the saddle and land in the coal cart. That's another option as well on the train. Actually, well, I was going to ask about. Yeah, I want to do that. I want to land in the coal cart. Yeah.
00:28:40
Speaker
All right, so your horse, your poor horse takes a tumble. I didn't know him very long. It was Elijah, old Elijah's horse. Old Elijah's horse. The poor horse takes a tumble and you go flying out of the saddle. You haven't had a feeling like this since you were thrown when you were riding in the hills of the old world with your father when you were six years old.
00:29:02
Speaker
And you don't ask why my dad wants to throw me. It's fine. Yes, you land on your bottom hoop skirt fluffing about your parasol is now filthy in the coal cart and you're not short range from the pistol wielding scale gang boy who was just pulled the lever previously.
00:29:26
Speaker
All right, Randy, you the group is caught up with this point. You said that it all happened. You had earlier said you wanted to use vigilance to try and seize that opportunity to find the perfect spot to jump onto the train from your horse. Yes. Well, for everybody like point out a spot like let's board there. That's the easiest place. All right. I would say this is going to be moving train, coal cart,
00:29:54
Speaker
I'm going to say three purple difficulty on this. Okay. You ready? I'm ready. Give me that vigilance roll.
00:30:06
Speaker
All right, that is a failure with an advantage. Yeah, so so serious. Here's where we can play that out. You you you guys sidle up to the coal cart while this is happening. And you see there's this awesome footpath where where the coal scrapers move into the load colon of the cart, you pointed out to everyone. And that exact moment the levers pulled the side falls down and all the coal starts shaking out of the cart over that thing. Oh, that's not that's that's whoa, that's not a good spot. That's not a good spot. But you do have an advantage. What would you like to do with that advantage?
00:30:37
Speaker
And if you simply want to, you can just pass a boost die to the next check. Could I get into the cold cart also, since I see? Not for one advantage. No, that's okay. All right, let me pass a boost dice. Okay, you guys have one failed check to your total right now. And you are not quite succeeded.
00:30:59
Speaker
OK, Glorfin on horseback having caught up. Can I kind of alluded to it earlier? Glorfin, you know, he's run with some different people over the years and maybe have done some less than scrupulous acts.
00:31:15
Speaker
Can I use skullduggery to try and harken back to my robbery days and find a good spot to like like a typical boarding spot for a train like this to rob it? Oh, I love it. Yeah, your difficulty is going to be one purple, one red, which I have set, as well as a boost die that Randy gave you. Maybe that maybe the coal cart jogs some memories. Oh.
00:31:38
Speaker
Whoa! Holy cow! Wow, I love this game. Okay, that is a success with two advantage, two triumph, and a despair. Wow. You did it. I won Genesis. Never seen it. Oh my gosh. That is beyond insane. Wonderful and terrible.
00:32:07
Speaker
This is, this is, this is absolutely wonderful. So, um, may I, well, okay. So you've got two more successes toward the total. Um, one of the ways I run skill challenges is that I let people spend triumphs, do a couple of different things. Um, one of which is you guys, you can provide an upgrade to the next check, but to be perfectly Frank, um, you can also spend a triumph to get an automatic three successes towards the total.
00:32:31
Speaker
If you were to pop both your triumphs right now, you would end this skill challenge if you really wanted to do that. If you don't, if you want to suggest something else, that's totally on you as well. And then I still have a despair to play with and you've got two advantage.
00:32:48
Speaker
Um, no, I think playing into the character, it would it would be right with Glorfin's ego to be the one to solve this problem and in the skill challenge. So I think those triumphs would be best spent there. So and considering the narrative, if you're calling upon this from Skulduggery is like, like, listen, Jack wagons, this is how you board a train. Listen here, Laman.
00:33:12
Speaker
I think I think I think that's I think that's very reasonable. Um, oh, man. So at this point, you know, you got you glorphin size, and what just just goes up to like one of the my the good with the flatbed mining cart, maybe, and just you see a step and you easily are able to transition off onto it basically, and point it out to the others.
00:33:37
Speaker
And you all notice inexplicably, Glorfin has pulled his bandana up over the bottom half of his face. And Mickey says, I thought you were just a gambler. What is going on?
00:33:52
Speaker
Let's go. So with that, the five of you are able to well, the four of you are still on horseback are able to climb onto the flatbed carrying all the mining equipment, which is one car back from the coal cart. OK, this puts you at medium range from the thug in the coal cart and also medium range from from from Little Miss Little Miss Precious.
00:34:18
Speaker
don't knock it I got my hat pin now Eric you've also got two advantage on that role and I've got a despair oh man here's here's what we're gonna do for the despair I'm gonna say that
00:34:38
Speaker
Yeah, buddy, I'm gonna say that the the the thug who's at the front of the coal cart where he pulled that lever, he sees you all enter. And he pulls a different lever. And you guys see the coal cart as well as the other carts behind it start to disconnect from the locomotive. Uh huh. They're not completely disconnected. There's maybe it's you know, as as it's losing speed, the gaps growing. Maybe you know, you've got you've got about 12 inches at this point. So we are just we are now we are
00:35:08
Speaker
There's, there's, there's us and then the coal cart and then it's decoupled. Correct. Okay.

Combat with Fey-Influenced Thugs

00:35:15
Speaker
So from back to front, you've got a load of blue stone. You've got a flat bed with mining equipment. You've got the coal cart and then you've got the locomotive. Got it. Okay. And literally this guy is at the front of the coal cart. He steps onto the locomotive side and decouples. Run. Yeah. You got two advantage, Eric. What do you want to do with it?
00:35:37
Speaker
Can I get a maneuver to start? Yeah. Like heading that way to be on the coal cart. Yeah, absolutely. OK, let's get it into initiative at this point, guys. I'm going to ask for actually it's going to be vigilance initiative from everybody, please. Oh, OK. Don't care for that one bit. That's as good as it could get. I think I did good.
00:36:05
Speaker
Well done. Hey, you guys have been. You guys are fast learners. Look at that. All right. All right. All right. All right. So we have initiative and we are now in a proper encounter at this point. Now, to be fair, you guys are riding your horses. None of you should have any weapons drawn at this point. Unless you tell me otherwise, maybe we can figure out a way to finagle that. But none of you should have any weapons drawn at this point.
00:36:31
Speaker
There are two thugs on the train does it set to set the stage again, we have the locomotive in front. All right, there's there is one of the scale gang boys who is obviously operating the locomotive at the rear of the locomotive now having just decoupled all the cars after the locomotive is the second thug member of the scale gang.
00:36:52
Speaker
All right, now the decoupled cars that are slowly starting to go come away. There's the coal cart, where Laelia is on her hoop skirted bottom. And now our gambler glorifin has now rushed over to the edge of that coal cart as well. The rest of you are in the flatbed cart just behind that which is full of mining equipment. And then there's another cart full of full of about half a ton of bluestone being pulled at the very end.
00:37:17
Speaker
Um, but very heavy and, and yeah, the gap already decoupled carts are starting to grow wider. I have three PCs that get a chance to act first before the NPCs do. And the thug at the end has a pistol drawn. Um, I also appear to have rolled a triumph. Oh, on your, uh, initiative.
00:37:43
Speaker
Oh, fantastic. Well, the way I run triumph is I give you a free maneuver before initiative starts. So, Oh, cool. That is great. Um, then I would like, uh, to also move up. Okay. So you are also, so at this point, uh, we have Mattias also in the coal cart, uh, that puts anyone in the coal cart at short range from the, uh, the thug with the drawn pistol. Um, anyone in the mining equipment card is at medium range.
00:38:13
Speaker
Okay. So how far away am I to this person? Short range at this point. Oh, okay. Well, dang it. What are you thinking? No, but they're kind of like in a trance, right? They appear to be in the same state that old Elijah was, but at the same time, they're also notorious, murderous criminals. So
00:38:44
Speaker
Okay, well, I think I do have something toward my charm. There was something, the knack for it, a charm skill. Yeah, that just means that if you're facing, like, it allows you to remove two setback dice from charm checks. So if you're, if you're in a situation where you're gonna need to make a charm check if you're trying to charm somebody, but circumstantially, you're facing a couple setback dice, you wouldn't have to face them. That's all that means. Okay, it reduces your it reduces that difficulty in those circumstances.
00:39:15
Speaker
Is this Thug, though, someone that's gonna, like, turn around and attack us, or are they just in a... Just in their kind of... You have no idea. Cool. Well, my plan was to kind of walk toward them, taking out my hatpin seductively with a charm skill to talk to them, but have a weapon drawn at the same time to attack if I needed to. My hatpin. I like the idea. If you want me... So at this point, there's about a 12-inch gap as the cars are starting to separate.
00:39:43
Speaker
All right, and- Oh, so I need to get off of this thing. Well, yeah, but if you wanted to move towards the edge of the cart and try and you could gingerly step over it now before the cart separates if you wanted to, but you'd be engaging with him at that point. Oh, man. Well, you know what? Nothing venture, nothing gain, let's do it. All right, and you want to pull your hat pin, you said. Yeah, you know, and I'm just talking like,
00:40:12
Speaker
Well hey there big boy. Taking that on my hat. As I'm making my way to the edge.
00:40:21
Speaker
Um, honestly, he's not going to, I mean, he's, he's, he's a catatonic slug controlled zombie at this point. Um, so we can, we owe them there. We can do it. Um, it's gonna, it's gonna take you a maneuver to engage with him and another maneuver to pull out your hat pin. All right. Um, if you want to make a check, you can do so, but it was, it will cost you two strain. It is a stressful situation. Um.
00:40:51
Speaker
then I won't worry about the hat pin. I will just try and jump over to the next car. Well, you can do that lickety split. Okay. And that's only gonna cost you one maneuver. Okay, then I guess... Wait, so what do I get? An action, a maneuver? What was that? Yep. One action, one maneuver. Okay, can my action be to draw my pistol or is that a maneuver?
00:41:12
Speaker
That will be it. Well, you can downgrade your action to a maneuver. But I wouldn't I mean, keep in mind, if you move, if you cross cards, you're engaged with him now. So literally, you guys are like within melee combat range. It's harder to use ranged weapons like that. Okay, then I need my hat pin. So then I'll do what I had planned. So you're just going to cross over, engage with him and yank your hat pin out.
00:41:39
Speaker
Uh, or, or secretly seductively pull your hat. Seductively. Yep. I'm going to do what I had planned. Let's go with it. Go with my gut. Okay. Do you want to take action? Um, well, I guess I, and so I don't take strain. I can downgrade my action, right? Well, right now you've spent, you've already downgraded your action to a maneuver. Okay. So if you can, you've taken two maneuvers, you're fine. If you want to suffer two strain, you might now also have an action.
00:42:11
Speaker
such as attacking or making a skill check. But at this point, you're engaged with this guy. Can I do a knowledge check? Talk to me about what? About seeing if there's some kind of emergency brake or something on this car. When I get to it. I like that a lot. So we will. Are you wanting to use your talent? Yeah.
00:42:40
Speaker
Okay. Because then I can send it to a triumph. So those of you who haven't looked, Trevor's character has a talent called knowledge is power or once an encounter, she can attempt a knowledge check relevant to the situation. And if she's successful, she gains a triumph that she can shunt to any one of her allies during the encounter. Oh, wow. Awesome.
00:42:59
Speaker
Um, so yeah, honestly, if, if, if you're, if this is about the train mechanics, I freaking love that. You know, if you're, if you're crossing over to engage with them at this point, maybe get a closer look at the locomotive, um, and see some of the controls. Um, absolutely. I would say this would definitely be knowledge old world. This is a, this is a modern contraption. Um, so what's the difficulty your talent? Is it too purple?
00:43:24
Speaker
Yes, too purple. All right, let me set that difficulty. But something, I also get a knack for it for old world skills. So if you were facing setback dice, you wouldn't have to deal with them, but you're not facing any setback dice. Okay, gotcha. So I've got your difficulty set, just give me an old world check. Oh, why do I do that? I'm sorry. Skills. Oh, gotcha. It'll be at the very bottom of the skills. Gotcha.
00:43:54
Speaker
All right. That is successful. OK, so we're going to bank that you have a triumph right now, Trevor, that you can give to any one of your allies during this encounter as you see fit, but it needs to relate to the check you just made. So something to do with the locomotive or the train or its accompanying machinery. All right. And at any moment, anyone's turn, you can pipe up after they make a check and be like, you get a triumph.
00:44:21
Speaker
All right. Okay. All you all you need to do is justify it. So you guys, you guys, you guys watch in shock as the old the old world patrician gets up seductively. That is going to cost you to you said you pulled your hat pin. That is going to cost you to strain. Be sure to do that. You guys watch as she gets up, pulls her hat pin crosses to engage with this guy and starts taking a deep gander with wonder and fascination at the locomotive machinery.
00:44:50
Speaker
Mattias is deeply alarmed by her now being on the other side of a widening gap from all of us. And so I would like to act. That's all right with everyone. Yep. Will this be our this this will be our third PC slot, right? Second, second.
00:45:19
Speaker
I just took forever, sorry. Well, no, I know that, but I also thought Philip moved beforehand. I got you because I had a triumph. Gotcha, that's right. He got a frame it over from his triumph, yep. I apologize. I mean, either way, do what you want to do, my man.
00:45:32
Speaker
Okay, and Matthias is going to solve this problem the way he solves problems when there are murderous bandits and, you know, some other things around. And so I'm going to use my quick draw talent to draw. I'll draw one of your pistols. Okay. Now, Philip, do you need as a reminder, are you familiar with two weapon combat in this system? I am. Yes. Okay.
00:46:04
Speaker
Yes, so. So right now, you're in the right now, you're in the coal cart, you're at short range, you're at short range from the bandit. If you were to pull a pistol and take a shot, your difficulty would be one red die because that bet it's engaged at short range. If you were to engage with him, it would be one purple, one red. OK. So so it's right now, it's I'm sorry, right now it's one red die. Correct. OK, so.
00:46:34
Speaker
If I want to use a maneuver to draw my second pistol and use two weapon fighting that upgrades the differences, increases difficulty. So it would be one red and one purple or two red, one red, one purple. Okay. Uh, that's what I want to do. So he, he flips one of the guns out as he's, as he's going, um, draws the other, uh, and I'm going to, I'm going to unload on this guy.
00:46:57
Speaker
Okay, I have your difficulty set is going to cost you two strain for the wait. No, no, it's one maneuver one action. Yeah, that's it. Okay. Your difficulty set. Go for it. All right. So it's just shoot twice, right? Well, no, it's shoot once, actually. Oh, okay. Just give. Oh, that's right. Yes, triggers with advantage. That's right. I'm ready now. That's right. Boom.
00:47:23
Speaker
Well, that wow, that is that is a success with disappointing. It is this winning role that is a success with one success, which is which is going to be so you don't get the second shot off. But you do you do you still deal seven words that that is going to. Yeah, that hits him in the shoulder and is not a fun wound. He's not enjoying it at all.
00:47:46
Speaker
Um, now you can still get a maneuver if you want to pop a couple strain. I will tell you that with the NPC initiative, the gap is going to widen to the point that you guys are going to need to check. That's yeah. That's what I want to do is I want to take two strain and get over there so that Leila is not the only one of us over there. Um, so I got it. Question answer. Did I learn anything from my knowledge check?
00:48:10
Speaker
Well you did, you learned plenty, but the point is it's very narrative. You get to decide at what point, at what check. Like if you had wanted to give him a triumph at that point, you could have. Gotcha. Do you want to do that retroactively? He could use it to do something cool or pull off his two weapon fighting. Or you can hang on to it. I feel like other people are going to have more struggle getting over here, so. Yeah, especially if the gap's about to widen.
00:48:35
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Because one of us, either Randy or I is going to be going after the gap widens. Oh, yeah. Randy, we have one PC slot left if you got something, if you got a thought. My thought is go ahead and take it. Okay.
00:48:53
Speaker
All right. I guess I will you, what's the penalty for like, if I've got a medium range weapon and I'm in short range of somebody, what's the penalty there? There's no penalty. There's no penalty at all. You're, you're looking a short range attack is, um, is one purple die. That's it. Um, but the hard part is if you're engaged.
00:49:13
Speaker
Okay. Okay. It's not, it's not medium range weapon. It's ranged heavy versus range light. So, um, if you're engaged with, uh, if, if to hit somebody with a range light weapon engaged, it's two purple dice to do it with a range heavy weapon. It's three purple dice. Okay. Here's what, here's what I want to do. I want to go ahead and use my maneuver to jump to the next cart towards the locomotive, which would be, which would be the coal cart. Um,
00:49:41
Speaker
I can, as an incidental, draw my rifle. You want to draw the hog leg? All right. I always want to use the... How many times do I pull that flamethrower? And I want to shoot at the... Do I have a bead on the one... I can't get to locomotive guy, right? Not at this angle, not at this... Because he would be medium now, wouldn't he?
00:50:02
Speaker
Um, at this point, yeah, he would be medium. You could do it. Uh, he would just have, I would give him a cover. Um, he, I'd say, I'd say I'd probably give you two setback die from cover. Um, so your difficulty would be too purple, too black. Okay. I'm going to do it and I'm going to use a story point to upgrade. So I'm going to be rolling three yellow. Uh, spend that story point. Okay.
00:50:33
Speaker
Well, I clicked it. Hang on. I've got your upgrade set and your difficulty. So you're free to take the shot with your rifle if you want. Okay. And that there it is ranged heavy. If you go to weapons, the weapons tab, you can actually click it and it'll bring back all the stats and stuff like, like it did from a TS. There's a weapons tab. I'm sorry. I'm looking right next to skills. Oh yeah. Where the initiative isn't up. Yeah.
00:51:02
Speaker
Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. And then I just do that. You do that. Are you kidding me? Wow, that is a success with one advantage. So that's a success. I don't know why your damage didn't carry over. That's odd. But the damage on the hog leg is what, eight? Yeah. So yeah, you're looking at nine wounds against this thug that seriously injured it.
00:51:32
Speaker
I apologize. I just don't remember it's it says crit three and any critical injury has plus 10 added to the bubble button that didn't happen. So so crit three means that you can spend three advantage or a triumph to crit. That's right. I remember that. Okay, nevermind. I obviously can't do that. So yes, but you do have an advantage. Now, Trevor could give you a triumph if he wishes, but he could be saving that for grum or any of the rest of you later in this encounter. It's entirely up to you. I
00:52:02
Speaker
He made it to the car successfully that I'm on. Not yet. Not yet. No, he just he took a shot is what his check was, Trevor. Uh. Uh. Thoughts. I'd hold on to it. I'm going to hold on to it. Yeah, it's only going to get worse. All right. So what do you want to do with your advantage, then? Um.
00:52:31
Speaker
Lely is the only one on the locomotive, right? Nope. Is she on the locomotive? Or the engine? Okay. Yeah, Lely is on the locomotive along with Matias. Matias? Okay, that was the no, because Matias is also there. No, I'm just going to pass a boost. Pass a boost to the next to go. Okay.
00:52:55
Speaker
All right, well, we come now to the. And the PC at this point, the gap is going to widen. We've got, we've got several feet that are happening. That's going to increase the range band at this point. I'm going to say that we have a full range band gap. Between the locomotive and the cart.
00:53:13
Speaker
It's hauling mining equipment and half a ton of raw ore, so it's going to require a successful check to make that jump if anyone wants to try and get there. Meanwhile, the NPC is going to... Hmm... What is he going to do? He's going to try and... He's going to try and shoot Matthias. That's exactly what he's going to do.
00:53:38
Speaker
That is a complete wash, so a failure. Yeah, he points the gun at you. I mean, what? Do you like maybe not going to side? You guys are engaged. Do you have a bit of a tussle? Do I have a tail? Sure.
00:53:54
Speaker
Can I like smack his hand with my tail so that it just like knocks slightly aside and misses? All right, so yeah, the gun goes to the side, fires right near Lalia's ear. Lalia, this weapon fires right near you. Ow. Just super ow. And at that point, he is also going to... He's gonna take a defensive stance.
00:54:24
Speaker
All right, which will protect him in some small capacity. All right. Meanwhile, the guy at the locomotive is going to try and push it even harder. This is not going to be easy for him, but he's going to try.
00:54:41
Speaker
Holy cow. He succeeded with with three threat. Yeah, that's what's going to get it to short range. So at this point, we have a full range band gap between there. But there's three threat. He blows the engine of the locomotive out with that three threat. At this point, he's overextended it. It's squealing. There's there's steam sputtering. And you guys hear a really strange and awful noise coming from the engine department. Oh, dear.
00:55:12
Speaker
Is it slowing down as a result of that or is it still going? Not this turn. Um, okay. I think that would leave a glorfin and, and, uh, and, and grum up this round. Grum, you want to go ahead and go? Um, yeah, I'll go. I'm in the coal cart, right? You are. And at this point it's short, short range band difference. Um,
00:55:40
Speaker
Now, since he has his staff, is it like on his back or is it in his hand? Where is his staff? Do I have to equip my staff? That's a very good question. I don't know, guys, what do you think? It's a, it's a crozier. He would have it on him. Would he have some type of back sling forward or would he be carrying it with him while he was riding in his lap? How would that work?
00:56:09
Speaker
I default to fill up all questions, weaponry. I mean, he's just, he's carrying a staff. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know if it slings on his back. Um, how does Gandalf carry his staff? Gandalf just carries his staff. So I would say the same would be true for you, Randy. Okay. Good. Good. I kind of, I couldn't remember if he did or not. Okay. So can I maneuver up and just take a whack at the guy?
00:56:39
Speaker
Nope. This at this point, because the carts are separated, you're at short range. Oh, that's right. On the other one, you would have to you'd have to jump the carts. Well, I want to try to get over there. So all right. This is going to be a three purple difficulty.
00:56:59
Speaker
Um, in terms of wait, well, based on the thread he rolled earlier, no, I'm going to, I'm going to say it's a two purple difficulty at this point. Um, an athletics check. Um, and it would take you a maneuver to make that jump. Okay. And is, and do I have a bonus die from before? No, you do. One was passed. I've got that noted as well. Okay. I'm also going to go ahead and spend a story point to make this upgraded difficulty because, you know, there's some chance that things might go wrong here. So.
00:57:30
Speaker
So go ahead and make an athletics check for me, Randy. There it goes. There it is. That is a success. We'll keep it simple. Um, you managed to make, okay. So picture the picture, the backend of the locomotive that's slowly starting to move away. It's got a bit of an overhang to keep the rain off and stuff like that. And you're a pretty tall guy, Randy. So, uh, you know, grum grum makes the jump, uh, effortlessly to be perfectly honest. And you land, um, engaged with.
00:58:00
Speaker
this thug and the the two others and that was uh that was a maneuver okay so can i swing at him with my staff of reverence uh you can um i have your difficulty set it's going to be one purple and one red okay and can i add a black to it for battle rage oh my yes you may
00:58:30
Speaker
All right, so that's a miss, but you got two advantage, Randy. He took a little bit of a defensive stance earlier, which protected him from the brunt of your blow, and it was kind of a whiff, but you did get two advantage. What do you want to do with that?
00:58:49
Speaker
And if you want to think narratively, especially in combat, do you want to make it harder for him? You know, maybe you've put him off balance. Yeah, that's what I was thinking, like kind of knock him off balance. Guess he was trying to move. He kind of trips. You could you could you could absolutely do that. You could also and you could we can interpret that by saying that, you know, he's he's a bit flustered. He can get a setback die on the next check he makes. That works for me. All right.
00:59:17
Speaker
Alright, Eric, you are the last one who is still in the mining cart at this point. Question. I'm on the coal cart. Oh, you're on the coal cart, yes. Yeah. Oh, wait, what's that? One second, Trevor, what was that? So I can use this triumph, right? To gift to him? You could, that would be an extra success too. Would that have led to a success, Philip?
00:59:40
Speaker
That would have been a wash with a triumph. Yeah. No, that would have been two successes, two failures. Oh, no. I mean, I want to gift it to. Oh, oh, oh. Oh, well, wait until he rolls. You can wait to see what the results of his role are. Well, I have a I have a. As it's supposed to be based off the knowledge I learned about the train, right? I have a thought. I'm jiving with you, Trevor. So let me describe what I'm going to do, because I think we're on the same page. So Glorfin being on the coal cart is is the I'm
01:00:09
Speaker
Is the door to the conductor cab open? Yes. OK. Glorifin sees everything going on with the engine. He's he's not a conductor. He's not an engineer. He doesn't know exactly what that means. He knows that something weird's happening, but he doesn't know if that's going to stop the train.
01:00:26
Speaker
Uh, Glorfin would like to, um, just take a moment, exhale, pull his, uh, pull his pistol out. So use a maneuver, bring it up. And I want to try to shoot the emergency brake handle.
01:00:47
Speaker
That's not what I thought, but it's a way to use your triumph is what I was trying to justify.

Derailing the Train and Conclusion

01:00:53
Speaker
Cause you were checking out the emergency break. Well, my thing probably would have taken more than a one triumph. So is that possible? Anything's possible. Um, we're going to say, if you're on the cold card, this would be a medium range and this would be, this would be a called shot. So I would need you to spend another maneuver.
01:01:14
Speaker
to aim. That's going to add two setback dice to your check. Okay. Two strain, which I forgot to mark down the other two. So two setback and two purple, which I've got noted. I already have two yellow for my I'm assuming this is ranged light.

It is now the thing is, it's a triumph. He adds it to the results. So you're gonna make your roll. And then Trevor's gonna add a triumph to the results, whatever it is. Yes. I'm just wondering if I should use a story point just to hedge my bets on actually making the shot. Yeah, why not? So I'm gonna use a story point to upgrade. So give myself another green. I've got that noted. Okay.
01:01:57
Speaker
So, yeah, it did. Did anybody actually follow us on horseback to watch this happen? Nope. Oh, dang it. Not after it, not after the sheriff's, not after the sheriff's get off my lawn speech at the beginning. So, yeah, Glorfin closes one eye, looks down his sights, pulls the trigger to success, one threat or three success, one threat in a triumph.
01:02:25
Speaker
Three success, one threat, and a triumph. Okay, so you successfully hit the emergency brake that will hit it. For the one threat, I'm gonna hang on to that for just a moment. What do you wanna do with the triumph that's been granted to you? Because obviously, you've got Laelia screaming to you about the machinery and very specific aspects of the locomotive. How does this play out? Can I see him shoot it and then I just kick it? No, this is my moment, back off.
01:02:53
Speaker
I love that so much. I mean, is is my act of just shooting it not enough to actually engage the emergency break? It is. It is enough to engage the emergency break with the success you rolled. I think you shot it. Yes. So I would like triumph. You can do something even better.
01:03:14
Speaker
I would like the triumph to be that the bandits, whatever, none of my allies get thrown off of the train or are negatively impacted by the sudden stop. Yeah. When the car that I'm on barrels slamming into the locomotive. Cool. Oh, I got you. Got you. Got you. So, OK, so Trev, I'm thinking I'm thinking from Laelia's perspective, you can see him aiming up this shot and you know what he's shooting for. And maybe you have a split second to scream to all of your friends. Hang on to something.
01:03:43
Speaker
Or excuse me. Brace yourself darlings. Brace yourself, Colin. Yes. So I guess I grab a couple handfuls of coal. Hold on.
01:03:53
Speaker
All right. Uh, so yeah, this, this is how we're going to play this out. Um, and this is a bit much for one threat, but we're going to play it. We're going to play it this way. So yeah, at this point, the emergency brake triggers the engine screaming anyway. All right. The locomotive like comes to a radical, radical stop. You guys are lurched forward, but with lately with lately as warning, um, you managed to grab onto something to keep on your feet and getting thrown off, you know, off the locomotive or on your butts.
01:04:23
Speaker
It stops in a hurry. Despite the deceleration of the three cars behind it, they come forward, slam into the locomotive. I mean, slam into it at this point. You hear a sickening screech of metal and the train derails. All right. Oh. I'm sure did save that guy's train.
01:04:47
Speaker
Chalk up another one for the sugar foot gang or whatever you call this exactly one spur bottom boy and he is thoroughly responsible for this. Can I just tell you what my triumph I wanted to be? What did you want it to be?
01:05:06
Speaker
Well, I wanted to being so smart and knowledgeable as I was stepping over the gap. Eric, get ready to hit a marker, whatever Trevor's about to say. Quite a large emergency device underneath the train that wouldn't let them separate X amount of feet.
01:05:21
Speaker
Oh, so it wouldn't have gotten too far away. Gotcha. That would have been fun. That would have been fun. But this is more fun. We have a derailment of the iron coach. So it goes flying off the tracks. The locomotive does. All right. They don't recouple. The other trains continue further down the track aways. At this point, both thugs who are still up as the train, as the locomotive of the iron carriage, it goes

off the track onto the raw ground, dirt and desert terrain. They are completely thrown on their butts. The rest of you managed to remain standing, though, thanks to that triumph.
