Speaker: Welcome everybody in to another edition of Warm Weather Fans, the Sunbelt Podcast.
Speaker: I am your host, Brian Stone, joined once again this week by Zeke Palermo and Matt Miguez.
Speaker: We've got a lot of stuff to talk about.
Speaker: We are actually going to hold bowl game previews until next week when we get a little closer to the start of those bowl games.
Speaker: But yeah, how's it going, boys?
Speaker: We got a lot of news coming out with coaching changes, a bunch of guys entering the transfer portal.
Speaker: There's a lot going on right now, and JMU still doesn't even have a coach, so we still have that to talk about whenever that comes around.
Speaker: But just to start off with Matt, how's it going?
Speaker: Doing well.
Speaker: Hope you guys are as well.
Speaker: Look, obviously, we'll get into the conference championship.
Speaker: It definitely went much different than I was expecting.
Speaker: But, you know, obviously, again, like I said, we'll dive deeper into it.
Speaker: Look, the big headlines has got to be the coaching hires that have already been made and what could still be on the horizon for the Sun Belt.
Speaker: Because, again, I know people don't want to hear this.
Speaker: I really wouldn't be surprised if John Summerall got a job.
Speaker: So that's another caveat that we've got to get to.
Speaker: Well, how about this?
Speaker: And I'll throw it to Zeke here in a second.
Speaker: But I did find it a little ironic that Troy plays Duke in the bowl game.
Speaker: I just thought that that was kind of funny.
Speaker: He may be looking at, hey, I might be on that side of the field this time next year.
Speaker: But Zeke, how are you doing?
Speaker: How's it going?
Speaker: I'm doing okay.
Speaker: I think we had a good...
Speaker: an exciting conference championship game in our realm of the Sun Belt.
Speaker: But I've got, I've got two gripes.
Speaker: One is that the game was scheduled at the same time as the SEC championship.
Speaker: I think that's a huge missed opportunity for this conference to have put this game in front of a wider audience, because I think the casual fan is a lot less interested in Troy App State than the,
Speaker: what ended up being a playoff decider between Alabama and Georgia.
Speaker: And I understand there's probably some media contract deal with ESPN that went into that, but I'm disappointed that that was the time slot that this game had to be played.
Speaker: With that said, I'm still reeling from the greatest injustice in recent college football history, and that being that Liberty was picked over Troy for the New Year's Six Bowl.
Speaker: That is, of course, what I'm talking about.
Speaker: Come on, man.
Speaker: No, it's a joke.
Speaker: It's a joke, man.
Speaker: Free Florida State, but let's be real here, boys.
Speaker: Liberty played a cupcake schedule and does not deserve that G5 representation.
Speaker: Once again, it's disappointing that it can't be JMU, who I think is probably the best G5 school in the country.
Speaker: by a nautical mile.
Speaker: It's just not really putting a good foot forward for G5 football and just an underrepresentation of the Sun Belt in places that it should be represented.
Speaker: Yeah, you know, the actual the college football playoff committee actually did the exact opposite of what the G5 selection did, where they just looked at the end record and said, yep, they're they're undefeated.
Speaker: Good with us.
Speaker: Come on.
Speaker: And so I have very little doubt that JMU nor Troy would, or Troy rather, would defeat Liberty on a neutral field or even in Virginia, you know, at Liberty Stadium.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: You know, it sucks, but, you know, that's kind of the thing is, you know, Liberty moving forward is going to be a real big fish in a small pond over in Conference USA.
Speaker: And so they're probably going to get a lot more of these moving forward considering they play some real, real cupcakes within that conference.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And they got a lot of money to spare.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So, you know, unlike their former president, they won't be sitting and watching this time around.
Speaker: So, you know, it sort of is what it is.
Speaker: But let's get to the Sunbelt title game.
Speaker: Let's talk about it.
Speaker: Troy defeats App State 49-23.
Speaker: This one was actually very close until the fourth quarter, and Troy showed up in the fourth quarter and just absolutely dropped the hammer on Appalachian State.
Speaker: Kimani Vidal set a FBS record for most rushing touchdowns in a conference championship game with five.
Speaker: He also ran for 233 yards.
Speaker: Matt, through three quarters, would you say, because you were on App State heading into this game, would you say through three quarters this is kind of how you envisioned this game to go and then it just kind of turned, or were you hoping that App had kind of jumped out ahead and had a little bit of an advantage going into the last quarter?
Speaker: No, I mean, through three quarters, this game went fully as I expected it to.
Speaker: App State kicked a field goal late in the third to make it a 21-17 game.
Speaker: They were still very much...
Speaker: in the conversation, right?
Speaker: And then even early in the fourth quarter, Kamani Vidal runs it in for a touchdown to make it 28-17.
Speaker: App State's still in it at that point.
Speaker: The moment where this game went out the window was six seconds after that touchdown when Troy's defense got a scoop and score.
Speaker: At that moment, the game was over.
Speaker: You were done.
Speaker: Any momentum that App State thought they still had was gone.
Speaker: Troy had their foot on the gas.
Speaker: I mean, the game, the pooch was screwed at that point, right?
Speaker: No, look, I thought App State played very well for three quarters.
Speaker: They did everything, I think, that they wanted to do against Troy.
Speaker: Outside of Kamani Vidal, Troy wasn't really doing anything
Speaker: They were kind of doing a lot of what they did throughout the year, just kind of methodically moving things down the field and getting things done.
Speaker: Kamani Vidal was special.
Speaker: Again, over 200 yards, five touchdowns, just insane numbers for him.
Speaker: I think he's going to go make a lot of money on Sundays, and I think he's going to do it as a late-round draft pick, too.
Speaker: which will be even better for most NFL teams.
Speaker: But look, you got to give credit to Troy.
Speaker: They're back-to-back Sunbelt Conference champs for a reason.
Speaker: John Summerall's done a hell of a job over there, and that's why I brought up the point off the top that I don't know that he stays in Troy much longer because somebody is going to realize the work that he has done and will want to pay him a massive contract to come try and do the same thing with their program.
Speaker: But no, congrats to Troy.
Speaker: I think brighter days are ahead for App State.
Speaker: And through three quarters, it was a fun conference championship game.
Speaker: But man, that fourth quarter got ugly quickly.
Speaker: Yeah, hopefully, you know, you're familiar with this guy.
Speaker: Hopefully he kind of takes the Elijah Mitchell route and ends up in the right... Kimani Vidal, I'm speaking of, of course, ends up in the right situation.
Speaker: And, you know, hopefully that team doesn't turn around and then trade for the best player at that position in the sport.
Speaker: Like, what happened to Elijah Mitchell?
Speaker: I'm still not going to talk about that.
Speaker: No, listen, I'm not saying, like, that's Elijah Mitchell's fault.
Speaker: Just...
Speaker: Right, right.
Speaker: Christian McCaffrey's just that good, so I get it.
Speaker: Unfortunately, that was something that befell him.
Speaker: Again, hopefully he ends up in a spot where he gets a legit chance, because I think he could be a real contributor.
Speaker: I'm sort of getting a little off topic, but last year, people kind of wrote Jalen Tolbert off in Dallas because he didn't do much as a rookie.
Speaker: He's actually kind of producing now.
Speaker: You know, maybe sometimes these guys don't come pre-packaged, like ready to go.
Speaker: They need like a little bit of seasoning, so to speak, you know?
Speaker: And so, you know, hopefully wherever he lands, he ends up getting a shot.
Speaker: But yeah, I agree.
Speaker: He's a special, special Sunbelt running back.
Speaker: But Zeke, from your side of things, you know...
Speaker: Where did it's kind of tough to say right now, right?
Speaker: Because there's still, I think a couple of different job openings, Duke being the one that kind of sticks out the most where Summerall could potentially end up.
Speaker: And, um,
Speaker: You know, the way this game gets... This is a classic textbook Troy game.
Speaker: You run the football, you play defense, you know, you grind out a win, and then eventually, you know... I always made the thing about...
Speaker: The analogy of the boa constrictor about Troy's defense.
Speaker: They latch on and they squeeze and squeeze and squeeze.
Speaker: And then guess what?
Speaker: They're going to get something like a scoop and score.
Speaker: They're going to get a big turnover in a big spot.
Speaker: They're going to totally shift the momentum of the way the game goes.
Speaker: So, yeah, I don't even know that necessarily I have a question, but do you have anything to kind of add on to that?
Speaker: Not a ton.
Speaker: I think this was a poor matchup for App State from the get-go.
Speaker: I mean, mind you, the 271 rushing yards and five touchdowns, App State has had two games allowing more than that, allowing 300-plus ground yards.
Speaker: And in those games against North Carolina and Southern Miss, allowed five and four touchdowns on the ground again.
Speaker: So this team's been getting diced on the ground all year.
Speaker: And so it's not terribly shocking to see
Speaker: it was just the manner in which it happened.
Speaker: I mean, whenever you get to see a guy rush for four or five touchdowns, it's really, really special.
Speaker: And so as you guys kind of put to rest already, Kamani Vidal, incredible game.
Speaker: Probably he was voted Offensive Player of the Year in the Sun Belt, and deservedly so after that.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: This was just an unfortunate game for App State.
Speaker: And honestly, it fits my narrative about this team that they only play one good half.
Speaker: Because if they had scored 16 points in the first quarter, like they did in the second, it's still a loss, but it's a lot closer.
Speaker: And I don't think Amani Badal gets those chances near the end of the game to score those late touchdowns.
Speaker: I mean, mind you, of his final three, five carries, three of them were touchdowns.
Speaker: So there's that angle of Sean Clark did Sean Clark things in this game after keeping it close, just
Speaker: Couldn't shut the door.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: It was a very exciting game.
Speaker: I'm just, again, really disappointed that more people didn't get to get eyes on this one.
Speaker: You know, I definitely agree with what you're saying about the time that they scheduled it, because there was a period between when basically, you know, the Texas-Oklahoma State game was, you know, essentially over, and there was like a gap where the only thing on for like an hour and a half or so...
Speaker: was the Mountain West Championship game.
Speaker: So I ended up watching actually like a little bit of that because I was kind of waiting on this game to come on.
Speaker: I basically had two screens going where I was watching the SEC title game and this one kind of simultaneously.
Speaker: But
Speaker: the way that conference championship week is scheduled is so strange to me you'll have three games all start at the same time and then they'll then they'll all end at the same time and then there will just be like an hour and a half where there's nothing on tv and you're just like what do i do now do i go to trader joe's how do i burn this hour and a half until the next big game comes on so you know i i don't really understand the scheduling thing either
Speaker: Matt, one of the things that we talked about going into this game, and Zeke and I were really like, this is a big concern for App State, is the pass protection.
Speaker: Troy brings down Joey Aguilar five times.
Speaker: Their offensive line essentially just can't hold up.
Speaker: And we can bring in another element, too.
Speaker: Another thing that we talked about was Caden Robinson is Joe Aguilar's guy in the receiving court.
Speaker: But after that, it's just kind of a bunch of dudes.
Speaker: I mean, it really is.
Speaker: It's just one guy in Robinson and then just kind of whoever wants to do it this week.
Speaker: So how much do you think that kind of played into it, the fact that
Speaker: You know, they really only have one receiving weapon that's in the top 20 in the conference in yardage this season.
Speaker: So, again, you know, Robinson got 70 yards, but it was kind of what I said in the preview, which was they know that they can just focus in on him and then
Speaker: Whoever else wants to decide they're going to produce that week, they'll probably be fine with that and can live with it.
Speaker: So how much do you think them only having necessarily like one real target in the passing game played into the way that this one went?

Speaker: And then you have Christian Horn, who's a guy who everybody remembers from when he caught the Hail Mary against Troy last year.
Speaker: He had five catches for 42 yards, but you're right.
Speaker: Outside of Caden Robinson, they've kind of struggled to identify, you know, who's the number two, who's the number three.
Speaker: They've struggled in the backfield.
Speaker: Like,
Speaker: bread and butter used to be, okay, you had Darrington Evans, went to Nate Noel and Camp Peoples and Datrick Harrington.
Speaker: And who do you, who do you go to in the backfield now?
Speaker: I'm like, yeah, Roberts.
Speaker: I mean, yeah, he put up good numbers in this game, but he doesn't feel like he's on the level of,
Speaker: App State running backs that we've come to know.
Speaker: So Sean Clark's got to address the skill positions this offseason, whether it be through high school recruiting, whether it be through the transfer portal.
Speaker: However, he has to do it.
Speaker: I think App needs to upgrade their skill positions.
Speaker: And then you're right.
Speaker: Their offensive line struggled in this game.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: They've had a pretty strong offensive line in the second half of the season.
Speaker: But yeah, they certainly struggled on Saturday.
Speaker: You said Joey Aguilar got sacked five times.
Speaker: That's going to be something that they need to address because, correct me if I'm wrong, before taking the head coaching job, wasn't Sean Clark the offensive line coach?
Speaker: Yeah, he was.
Speaker: Yeah, so when your head coach's specialty is offensive line, that should probably be the best thing about your team.
Speaker: So the fact that they've gotten away from that is a little concerning.
Speaker: So they're going to have to figure that out and the skill positions as well.
Speaker: But look, if they can hold on to Joey Aguilar, they've got a bright future offensively in them.
Speaker: Yeah, I mean, one of the things we can discuss a little later, because it kind of plays into another news item that we want to talk about, is there are a lot of prominent players in the Sun Belt that have been contributors this year and last year that are either graduating or entering the transfer portal.
Speaker: You know, and we'll talk about those in a little bit, but there, I mean, there's a chance that along with, you know, TJ Finley, Joey Aguilar is one of the top two passers in the Sun Belt heading into 2024.
Speaker: Like, you know, if he, if he continues this level of production that he's put up this season, you know, the sky's the limit.
Speaker: Now,
Speaker: I guess the big question is, you know, whether Summerall moves on, ends up taking another job, or he holds out for something else and comes back for a third year, which, I mean, it's crazy to think that he's only been here, what, three years now or something, two years or something like that?
Speaker: So, I mean, he's had a crazy run in just a short period of time.
Speaker: But kind of what Matt said, Zeke, I have a question.
Speaker: So,
Speaker: You know, let's say hypothetically Aguilar comes back next year.
Speaker: He's coming back next year.
Speaker: You know, he's all but assumed to be the starter.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: He comes back next year.
Speaker: Where does this app team kind of go from here?
Speaker: Because you've had... Recent history, you've had... Last year, they go 6-6.
Speaker: They don't make a bowl game because of a scheduling issue with FCS teams.
Speaker: This year...
Speaker: They were the third best team in the conference, but weren't even the best team in the East.
Speaker: And they kind of back into the title game just due to NCAA rules, not because they were head and shoulders above the rest of the conference.
Speaker: And you're still losing stupid games under Sean Clark where we've talked about it all year, but it's Wyoming, it's Old Dominion, it's Coastal Carolina.
Speaker: This game, I mean, it felt like they hung around and played to their absolute best.
Speaker: possible best but they're clearly not still on this level of a Troy or a JMU and who knows what happens with these two programs heading into next year but when you're when you're Sean Clark and you look at this team Zeke where does this team kind of go from here like do you need to reinvent yourself as like a a super super pass heavy team to play into Aguilar like what what's kind of the what what is going to get them over the hump in the conference moving forward
Speaker: So I think, for one, it's restocking this offense.
Speaker: We talked about how it lacks a ton of oomph in its weapons, and I think Nate Noel is done after this season, so they're going to need to retool it running back.
Speaker: They need someone alongside Caden Robinson, and I think there's a wealth of receivers that are startable today if they want to go to the portal.
Speaker: but then long-term obviously replenish through recruiting.
Speaker: I think that's got to be your biggest thing this offseason is bolster this offense.
Speaker: Defensively, this team admittedly has not been great.
Speaker: I mean, we've got lots of games here allowing 30, 40 points.
Speaker: I think the one that sticks out most to me is the 40 points allowed to ULM and the 38 to Southern Miss.
Speaker: Those are pretty treacherous offenses.
Speaker: So App State is going to need to find some sort of defensive identity.
Speaker: Whereas I think they need to retool offensively, find a defensive identity.
Speaker: And then it's also just an internal conversation that we talked about last week and the week prior, and we're probably going to talk about the next couple of weeks as we get into offseason stuff.
Speaker: Similar conversation that Georgia State is going to be having right now is, are we okay going...
Speaker: 6-6, 7-5, 8-4, with our ceiling being 8-4.
Speaker: Because realistically, as you guys have talked about, Sean Clark's guys, he has his guys in now, and his team has only regressed since the Satterfield and Drinkwits guys have since graduated or transferred out.
Speaker: So I think...
Speaker: That is maybe not for Sean Clark to decide, but that's the third thing for App State moving forward is, is this our guy?
Speaker: We like him.
Speaker: He's done good things.
Speaker: But do we believe that our ceiling is higher than his?
Speaker: And I think App State has the pedigree, has the name brand value, which I think is very, very important when determining at this level what your ceiling is.
Speaker: they have the ability to shoot a little higher.
Speaker: They probably should be a nine-win team, right?
Speaker: They play Liberty next season out of conference, and I think that'll be a really good litmus test to really gauge where you are as compared to some of these conference rivals where things get sticky.
Speaker: So my three things for App moving forward, retool the offense, define the defense, and have this internal conversation of,
Speaker: do we think Sean Clark has hit his ceiling?
Speaker: Well, I hope, you know, I know they didn't win this game, but I hope that App State fans, for their sake, like what they saw from Sean Clark and company this season because I think making it, you can add any asterisk to it and say, JMU wasn't allowed to play in the game, so we got to go because of that.
Speaker: He bought himself, what, two more years at minimum just by making the Sunbelt title game.
Speaker: I mean, and you can even you can even kind of talk yourself into, OK, we were in this game for three quarters.
Speaker: Things fell apart late.
Speaker: But you can also say, you know, Troy had a better team than we do, and we can kind of go back to the drawing board with him.
Speaker: And if he can get us to the promised land, you know, the Sunbelt title game, then we can just sort of work around that.
Speaker: Now...
Speaker: Are you going to have to suffer through a potential 6-6 season again under him?
Speaker: That still remains to be seen because last year things looked like they were going downhill for him.
Speaker: And he kind of brought it back this year with rallying in the second half of the year after a rough start.
Speaker: But who knows?
Speaker: I mean, he's also the... It's a real Jekyll and Hyde situation with him.
Speaker: You know, it's one second things are great and this team is rolling, and then the next second it's like, how did we lose to Wyoming, a team that had like 75 yards of total offense?
Speaker: Like, it doesn't make any sense.
Speaker: But that's kind of what Sean Clark's team's identity are, is we can win any game, but we can also lose any game that we play.
Speaker: So there's nothing really guaranteed.
Speaker: But...
Speaker: You know, we've talked a lot about Troy and John Summerall.
Speaker: He's definitely overqualified having won back-to-back Sunbelt title games.
Speaker: He should be getting a better job elsewhere.
Speaker: I haven't seen his name linked a ton to the Duke job.
Speaker: Now, I don't know how many other openings there currently are.
Speaker: Some of those have been getting filled pretty quickly.
Speaker: But man, if he comes back for a third year in his coaching in 2024 in the Sun Belt, I mean...
Speaker: Troy's going to be head and shoulders the best team in the conference next year, just by virtue of having the best head coach.
Speaker: So, you know, we'll see how that all plays out in the coming weeks.
Speaker: But with that, Troy closes their season with their second consecutive Sunbelt title, 11-2, 7-1 in conference play.
Speaker: App State finishes their season 8-5.
Speaker: I believe they were 6-3 in conference play.
Speaker: So that is it for the Sunbelt regular season.
Speaker: Again, hats off to Troy.
Speaker: Had the best defense all year.
Speaker: Outside of one dogfight game against JMU, I mean, they were the second best or best Sunbelt team on any given week.
Speaker: And they definitely deserve to be named conference champions again.
Speaker: So let's talk about some, let's kind of transition to coaching news.
Speaker: There's been a lot that's come out, and I guess we can start with the one that happened least recently, the furthest away.
Speaker: So, of course, the second we sign off last week, like the next day, Kurt Signetti announces he's leaving JMU and going to Indiana.
Speaker: He is going to get paid at Indiana.
Speaker: They are currently paying a coach $20 million not to coach.
Speaker: So clearly he is going to get a bag at Indiana way more than he would at JMU.
Speaker: I don't know if you guys saw this, but the season that JMU's had has brought out a lot of the trolls on Twitter with the JMU tags and everything else.
Speaker: But there were people who were talking themselves into him staying even like an hour before they had announced he had left.
Speaker: So it was like the athletic kink comes out and says he's like the sole candidate for the IU job.
Speaker: Like it's a matter of
Speaker: when, not if.
Speaker: And there were still people like, he said that the grass isn't always greener, therefore he's never going to leave.
Speaker: Well, that money's plenty green and you can actually spend it.
Speaker: So, you know, it sucks when you lose a coach at the G5 level, but it's kind of one of those things that I don't know if GMU fans have kind of
Speaker: come to understand that now, but at the time, it felt like they were like, we're different than every other G5.
Speaker: Every other G5 is going to lose their coach to a bigger program for more money, and he's just going to stay for life because he's older and likes coaching here or something.
Speaker: I didn't even really understand the argument.
Speaker: But...
Speaker: What do you guys kind of see his outlook at IU being at this point?
Speaker: Because JMU still hasn't hired a head coach.
Speaker: There are some names that I've seen thrown out there, but we don't know anything at this time.
Speaker: What do you guys kind of see him doing at IU moving forward?

Speaker: I think he's going to have a heck of a rough time trying to recruit and get players into Bloomington.
Speaker: So, Zeke, Matt, what do you guys kind of think about the way that that's all going to play out?
Speaker: I'll just go ahead and say I don't pity Signetti.
Speaker: Obviously, he's getting his bag, but this is an Indiana team that, mind you, finished 3-9.
Speaker: In a Big Ten that's only getting stronger.
Speaker: I mean, he's going to be, he was brought along for this rebuild.
Speaker: And I'm curious to see how it plays out.
Speaker: Because James Madison, as I understand it, he didn't build this James Madison program from the ground up.
Speaker: like he's going to have to build Indiana.
Speaker: He was starting on second or third.
Speaker: So I think it's an interesting hire.
Speaker: It's a good hire considering he's or was the most probably the sexiest name at least on the coaching market from the G5.
Speaker: I think now it's Sumrall followed by maybe tied with Jamie Chadwell if he ever wants to leave his job at Liberty.
Speaker: I'm just... I think I'm worried that he's going to get caught lost with the big dogs.
Speaker: I'm not saying it was a bad move because it's a vertical move, right?
Speaker: It's by no means horizontal or downward.
Speaker: But I worry that it's hard to find success in the Big Ten, and it's only going to get harder.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: He's probably during, let's be realistic, during his tenure, he's probably not going to get a chance to coach in the college football playoffs, where if he had stayed at James Madison, he absolutely would have had that opportunity.
Speaker: So I hope he can, you know, I hope he sleeps well at night with his, you know, millions of dollars.
Speaker: But it's tough to project success for a team with a coach that has never had to rebuild a program like this.
Speaker: So I'm actually going to kind of disagree.
Speaker: So I guess before I say disagree or agree, the new look Big Ten, USC, Oregon, UCLA, all those programs coming in, what would you consider successful for Indiana?
Speaker: Gosh, I mean, I think top half, right?
Speaker: Because there's going to be 16 teams.
Speaker: So in the top eight... Oh, go ahead.
Speaker: Top half, right?
Speaker: So somewhere in the top eight, Brian, do you agree with that?
Speaker: I think you need to win like eight, nine games.
Speaker: Like if you want to be truly like successful, like if you want to, if you want to barely sneak into like the Outback Bowl or whatever every year,
Speaker: You can go 7-5.
Speaker: They'll take you in Tampa all day.
Speaker: But I think if you want what is true success, I mean, I don't know if you've seen this, but the 9-win-Deana thing, it's not just a meme, right?
Speaker: They won nine games when they had Michael Penix and all that sort of stuff.
Speaker: I don't think they have those lofty expectations off the bat, but if you want to say what does a successful Indiana coach look like, I think you've got to win eight, nine games.
Speaker: So the thing is, is that if they're coming off of a three and nine season, they're hiring Signet to rebuild the program.
Speaker: He probably has four years at a minimum.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: More than likely, probably five.
Speaker: The whole length of his contract.
Speaker: Right, right.
Speaker: He's not going to get fired early unless they just go 0-12 twice or something crazy like that.
Speaker: So I think Cignetti's going to have the time and now the resources to build this program A, the right way and B, the way that he wants to.
Speaker: Now, look, I will agree with the fact that he did not build JMU's program.
Speaker: He pulled an Eli Drinkwitz, and he picked up where Scott Satterfield left off and kept on rolling, right?
Speaker: But it takes a great coach in order to keep that rolling.
Speaker: So you have to credit him for that.
Speaker: And I think the most imperative part of this is going to be, who does he hire to be on his staff?
Speaker: He's plundered.
Speaker: He's plundered the James Madison staff.
Speaker: Offensive coordinator, all of the offensive position staff, DC, all from his James Madison staff.
Speaker: That's to be expected.
Speaker: Did you see what happened in Lafayette the day Billy left?
Speaker: The joke around Lafayette is that they even took the video guy.
Speaker: Like, Billy Napier legitimately took the content guy to Gainesville with him.
Speaker: And he left his ability to win games in Lafayette, too.
Speaker: So, there's that.
Speaker: Well, you said it, not me.
Speaker: Hey, listen, if Deserbo doesn't work out, Napier might be right back looking for a job.
Speaker: So, y'all could just welcome him back with open arms.
Speaker: I mean... Oh, God.
Speaker: But no, man, I think Signetti could find success at Indiana.
Speaker: Now, I don't think eight, nine wins consistently is going to be a thing, right?
Speaker: But you could consistently win six, seven games, and then you've got an eight, nine win season sprinkled in there.
Speaker: then yeah, I mean, with the competition that you're going to be playing in the Big Ten, I think that that's kind of what Indiana's looking for because they know they're not a football school.
Speaker: They're just, they're not.
Speaker: So I think they want to be competitive.
Speaker: So I think Cignetti's the right guy to do it, and if he's not, then hell, he gets a bag while trying.
Speaker: Good for him.
Speaker: So there's a couple things, right?
Speaker: Number one, I think they kind of want to do what Mike Elko did at Duke.
Speaker: which is he's not necessarily a defensive-minded guy, but you're in a situation at a basketball school in a Power 5 where we would like to be in these games.
Speaker: We don't necessarily have to win them.
Speaker: We just don't want to get blown out and embarrassed the way that we have historically.
Speaker: That's number one.
Speaker: Number two...
Speaker: I know you guys noticed this, but former JMU quarterback Jordan McLeod, Sunbelt player of the year, yada, yada, yada, all that jazz, enters the transfer portal very fast after Signetti declares that he's going to IU.
Speaker: The transition year to Indiana might be a little easier if Jordan McLeod just slots in right there and says, hey, guess what?
Speaker: I'm your quarterback again.
Speaker: And you get a...
Speaker: You get a conference player of the year type person at the quarterback spot for your first year, and you can kind of build off of that.
Speaker: Now, I don't know how many players from JMU are going to follow him, but anybody he gets is sort of icing on the cake.
Speaker: And it'll make it a little easier than having to just start from scratch the way that college football used to be, where you used to take a job and then it was like,
Speaker: you kind of did the Deion Sanders thing, but you couldn't tell all these kids like, Hey, get out.
Speaker: Like you're like, I'm kind of stuck with the guys that I have.
Speaker: Like I didn't have a ton of time to recruit.
Speaker: I got hired on like at the,
Speaker: end of november and guess what like the recruiting stuff used to be done in like february and then it was like that's your team so i think any jmu talent he accumulates is going to make things a lot easier but there are a ton of jmu players in the portal and okay round two name something that's not boring

Speaker: I was talking to Zeke about this before we started recording.
Speaker: One of the names that I hear kicked around a lot is Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney, potentially becoming the new coach for the Dukes.
Speaker: Zeke, what was his overall career record as a head coach?
Speaker: I mean, I know it's at the FCS level, but...
Speaker: Yeah, so Chesney, he's been coaching as a head coach since 2010.
Speaker: He did a stint in D3, D2, and then the FCS.
Speaker: Over his career, he's 111 and 46, which is a shade over 70% winning percentage.
Speaker: So if you land a guy like that, I mean, I will say, you know, I know you're losing a ton to the portal.
Speaker: But you can kind of keep things rolling as long as you can kind of patch together, you know, a lineup or whatnot.
Speaker: It is kind of interesting to me that they haven't yet hired a head coach.
Speaker: So clearly they're going doing their due diligence on all of these guys.
Speaker: But it feels like everybody else had like a target in mind and they were just totally like.
Speaker: We're not in all that much of a hurry, which is interesting with the early signing day stuff coming up later in December.
Speaker: But, you know, that's neither here nor there.
Speaker: I'll concede.
Speaker: I don't know a ton about Bob Chesney.
Speaker: Super front, never watched a Holy Cross football game in my life.
Speaker: Probably never will.
Speaker: But I trust JMU.
Speaker: Let's say that this ends up being the guy.
Speaker: I don't know where you're really hearing this from, but if he ends up being the guy,
Speaker: I trust JMU to make the right choice here because they played FCS, right?
Speaker: I believe, and I don't think this is a very unpopular opinion, that there's a goldmine of coaches at FCS and D2.
Speaker: But we've seen in the past that it's bigger programs throwing darts saying, this guy's successful, so I want him.
Speaker: James Madison played against this guy at Holy Cross.
Speaker: So they know if he's up to scuff.
Speaker: So if they go here or they go anywhere else at FCS, I'm going to be incredibly optimistic about it because I am certain, I am certain that they've done their homework on these guys at the FCS better than anyone else, maybe than Jacksonville State, the other FCS transition right now.
Speaker: I know they'll have done their homework better than anyone else.
Speaker: So, Matt, tell me if this sounds familiar.
Speaker: So let's hypothetically say Holy Cross loses Bob Chesney to the Dukes.
Speaker: Tell me if this sounds familiar.
Speaker: Holy Cross's quarterback, who I think won Walter Payton Player of the Year in the FCS level, is in the transfer portal.
Speaker: Wouldn't it be interesting if Chesney goes to JMU and says, hey, guess what?
Speaker: I'll bring you up with me.
Speaker: And then we get to go coach and play at JMU together.
Speaker: So then you get like an exact opposite of situation of, or the same situation as what's happening with, you know, Signetti at IU.
Speaker: So that'll be interesting to see how that all plays out.
Speaker: The next thing I wanted to get to transition to coaching news is ULM hired Bryant Vincent to be their next head coach, former UAB interim head coach,
Speaker: uh, now former, uh, offensive coordinator of New Mexico.
Speaker: Matt, you're more connected in the Louisiana sphere than I am.
Speaker: So can you kind of tell me what, what are your thoughts and like, what, what are you hearing from people about, about the hire?
Speaker: You know, me, I, I hate to talk anything good about ULM.
Speaker: Um, um,
Speaker: But look, I've got to give it to him.
Speaker: This is a hell of a hire.
Speaker: I've really been impressed with what Brian Vincent's been able to do at his multiple stops.
Speaker: UAB was really good at running the football while he was there, especially when he was the interim head coach.
Speaker: Then he goes to New Mexico, and they were top 25 in the country in rushing yards.
Speaker: You've got an identity already, right?
Speaker: you know that this guy is going to come into Monroe and they're going to run the football.
Speaker: So if you're a mobile quarterback, if you're a running back, you're looking at ULM like, hmm, okay, that could be interesting.
Speaker: And then here's the other thing.
Speaker: The expectation isn't high, right?
Speaker: This is a first-time head coach, and typically that's incredibly daunting.
Speaker: But what's the expectation?
Speaker: Like, Brian, if you could get us five wins, we'll love you.
Speaker: Like, let's be honest.
Speaker: In the first two years, if he can go five and seven in one of those years, Monroe's probably extending him after what they've had over the last couple of years.
Speaker: So I'm interested to see, again, very similar going back to the Cignetti situation.
Speaker: I've got to see who he's going to bring in.
Speaker: on his staff before I can make a full, like, okay, you know, this was a really good move for you, LM or not, but,
Speaker: Early on, my early indication is that this was a really smart hire by ULM.
Speaker: You give an opportunity to a guy to be a head coach for the first time, kind of put his own stamp on the program, and you already know what you're going to get from an offensive philosophy standpoint.
Speaker: And I think that's important early on to establish what type of team he's going to bring to you.
Speaker: So really interested to see where it goes.
Speaker: And I think it was a smart move.
Speaker: Yeah, so backing up what Matt said, New Mexico finished the 2023 football season as the 20th ranked rushing offense in the country.
Speaker: They averaged 192 rushing yards per game.
Speaker: So get ready to speak ground and pound, buddy, because ULM is going to run the dang football.
Speaker: Oklahoma drill a practice.
Speaker: Full pads, spring practice, day one.
Speaker: January 20th, break out the pads, boys.
Speaker: Get the cowboy collars on.
Speaker: We're hitting somebody today.
Speaker: Zeke, did you have anything to add on this hire?
Speaker: I mean, so I got a good look at what type of offense, at least in theory, Vincent wants to run when Georgia Southern played UAB last year.
Speaker: They had Dwayne McBride, who ended up being a draft pick for the Vikings late season.
Speaker: But man, I mean, they ran the football, they ran the football, they ran the football.
Speaker: They ran this interesting sort of outside zone that you would see kind of run in the NFL, like a West Coast zone run type scheme.
Speaker: And so...
Speaker: Again, if they find themselves an Ismail Mahdi or whoever in the transfer portal like Texas State did or one of these super, super productive running backs, they're going to see, I think, a lot of success as long as the offensive line holds up.
Speaker: But Zeke, did you have anything to add on this?
Speaker: I only have one final little thing to talk about and then we can close out here.
Speaker: Yeah, no real thoughts on the hire, more so an anecdote about Brian Vincent.
Speaker: This is not his first stop in the Sun Belt.
Speaker: He did two stints with South Alabama, actually, when they were making the transition into the Sun Belt from FCS.
Speaker: He was an assistant on that staff, left for a year to go to UAB, and then came back to be co-offensive coordinator for a couple years under Joey Jones.
Speaker: So,
Speaker: He's not unfamiliar with the conference.
Speaker: Obviously, the landscape has changed a lot, but just an anecdote about him.
Speaker: So the last little thing here, and if this guy wasn't so prominent and hadn't come up in so many discussions, I wouldn't even mention it.
Speaker: But Grayson McCall enters the transfer portal for the second consecutive year, this time as a grad transfer.
Speaker: So let's hope his grades are where they need to be because he has struggled with that before.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Where do we think that McCall ends up as a quarterback?
Speaker: He's definitely got a lot of promise.
Speaker: But there are a lot of programs that are seeing their guys transfer out, and we don't know where all of those landing spots are yet.
Speaker: Oklahoma.
Speaker: I'm not saying he's going to end up in any of these places or that he's qualified to, but Oklahoma, Ohio State.
Speaker: Auburn was looking at him last year until the grades thing came up.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: Is there maybe like a fit?
Speaker: Where do you guys see him fitting in?
Speaker: Do you think he ends up at like a big, big P5?
Speaker: Or do you think he ends up at like an Indiana type?
Speaker: Like where do you guys think he ends up as a grand transfer?
Speaker: I think he ends up at like a tier two P5.
Speaker: I mean, I think like an Auburn is a good example of that.
Speaker: I think Michigan State is...
Speaker: Considering what the college football landscape is starting to think about the ACC, Florida State might also be an option there.
Speaker: So I think he's not going to be contending for anything more than those 12 through 16 in the AP poll teams.
Speaker: But he, as you mentioned earlier, Brian, he was, I mean, this close.
Speaker: He was a Jamie Chadwell higher away.
Speaker: from being Auburn's quarterback for this season.
Speaker: So I can't imagine that interest has gone away from, has, you know, Auburn is suddenly disinterested.
Speaker: But it's going to be interesting because for the, I don't know, it feels like a free agency with how many guys are in the portal right now.
Speaker: And, you know, that's a separate conversation about the NIL and how we need to, should that be regulated?
Speaker: I don't know if either of you saw the USC,
Speaker: proposal that came out today um but i there's a ton a ton of quarterbacks in this portal and i can't imagine that he doesn't find a spot like he ended up not finding a spot last season two weeks ago maybe it was maybe it was a week i can't time is just kind of whatever at this point
Speaker: A week or two ago, there were 48 quarterbacks in the transfer portal.
Speaker: And obviously, other names have been added since then.
Speaker: Like I said, Kyle McCord, Dylan Gabriel, all of those sorts of guys.
Speaker: Matt, where do you think, if you took a step back and looked at all of the quarterbacks that are available in the transfer portal, do you think Grayson McCall slots in at the top half of that list?
Speaker: Who do you think should be prioritizing him based on what he has shown in previous seasons?
Speaker: Because this year he didn't put a lot on tape, got injured, etc., etc.
Speaker: First of all, let me just state that Gunnar Watson's... Gunnar Watson.
Speaker: Grayson McCall's... His piss might not be as teal as we thought it was.
Speaker: Let me first state that.
Speaker: But no, look.
Speaker: Obviously, you know, the Cords and the Dylan Gabriels of the world.
Speaker: There's tears, right?
Speaker: Obviously.
Speaker: Um, but no, look, I think Grayson McCall is certainly in the upper half of quarterbacks that are in the transfer portal.
Speaker: I know he, he spent a lot of time injured this year, but what you've seen from him at coastal Carolina, I mean, it's just, it's hard to argue against.
Speaker: Um, the, the guy's done it multiple ways.
Speaker: He knows how to win.
Speaker: Um, and for the most part, he's done it the right way.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: So, yeah, you know, I think if you can find, like Zeke said, a second tier, I hate to use that wording, but, I mean, that's kind of a second tier P5.
Speaker: You know, Jonathan Smith is an offensive mind coming to Michigan State from Oregon State.
Speaker: Grayson McCall feels like a good fit there.
Speaker: You know, one team that I might throw out that's looking for a quarterback, this would be a complete change of scenery for him, UCLA.
Speaker: Could be interesting.
Speaker: Dante Moore just entered the transfer portal, so they could be on the look.
Speaker: There's a couple of programs that are really interesting, but the biggest thing I have to say is for a guy that two years ago said that he would never leave Conway because he pisses Teal, he's entered the transfer portal for the second time.
Speaker: It's kind of interesting.
Speaker: I think he only pisses Teal in that Jamie Chadwell was just feeding him Baja Blast or something under the table.

Speaker: I think if you're looking for like a dark horse school, like if it is musical chairs, right.
Speaker: And everybody else is seated and he's just left kind of standing by himself.
Speaker: I think a school he could end up at,
Speaker: and this wouldn't be ideal because of the situation with realignment, is like Oregon State.
Speaker: Like, they lose DJU to the portal, and they're gonna have to play a Mountain West lineup plus whatever else they can get on the docket in short notice, but...
Speaker: There's an opening at quarterback there, so who knows if he decides to go that route, if he wants to go to one of those two teams, either Washington State or Oregon State.
Speaker: So we'll see how it all plays out.
Speaker: There's still a lot of dominoes left to fall.

Speaker: I thought Florida State got absolutely screwed because

Speaker: Just have a committee get together and just look at the recruiting rankings and say, these are our four.
Speaker: We'll take the top four recruiting classes, and then everybody else can deal with it.
Speaker: I think two things hurt Florida State.
Speaker: Number one, the injury to Jordan Travis.
Speaker: And I think that's a big part of it.
Speaker: But then here's the other thing, because let's be perfectly honest.
Speaker: Florida State was labeled debatable to get into the playoff before Jordan Travis got hurt because their strength of schedule wasn't great.
Speaker: They finished the season with the 55th strength of schedule while Texas and Alabama were at five and six.
Speaker: I think that's part of it as well.
Speaker: Also, I firmly believe that if they would not have struggled to beat Louisville, that they'd be in.
Speaker: Well, we don't have to get into a full-blown debate about this, but just a couple of rebuttal points on that.
Speaker: Number one, you know, when JT Barrett went down and Ohio State had to put Cardale Jones in, nobody knocked them for that, which is funny.
Speaker: I know they won their conference title by a lot more, but nobody immediately looked and went, well, their quarterback's out.
Speaker: We got to get them out.
Speaker: We got to put Baylor or TCU in.
Speaker: Like, just get them in.
Speaker: Um...
Speaker: Yeah, and I mean, I just don't care how much they won by.
Speaker: They won a Power 5 conference.
Speaker: They went undefeated.
Speaker: Again, if the games don't matter, and the scheduling thing, they schedule these things like 10 years out.
Speaker: You can't control what your schedule looks like six months before the season starts.
Speaker: Like, I looked it up the other day.
Speaker: Georgia Southern has their 2032 opponents set up.
Speaker: Like, that's how far out this stuff is scheduled.
Speaker: So...
Speaker: The scheduling thing doesn't mean anything to me because, A, you can't control who's good in ACC, and B, you scheduled LSU, and it's not their fault they didn't get the 2019 LSU Tigers, that they got the 2023 version that only started playing a month into the season.
Speaker: But, again, that's not... I don't hold any of that against him.
Speaker: I feel like all of this is like...
