Speaker: I'm Steve Brown and I'm Mark McBride and welcome to season two of the Yo-Yo Player podcast where a couple of dusty old farts grab some friends and reminisce about the 1999 Fiend Magazine Yo-Yo Tour.

Speaker: In this episode, Meals on Wheels.

Speaker: Jason told us the story about the day off we had outside of Oregon where We went to like Steve and I went into and Lau went in and saw the South Park movie and then bought a bunch of super soakers. Right. And then Jason and I think you went with Jason to so to the motocross, like the river rafting trip yeah and the motocross that turned into a into a food fight. and Do you remember that? I remember that very well.

Speaker: What happened? Okay. Okay.

Speaker: Fun fact, right? So when we were on the tour, we stopped in Oregon. We had a day off before Portland. And we stopped in this small backwater in Southern Oregon called Rogue River.

Speaker: And, uh, it turned out fast forward 10 years in advance. I lived in Southern Oregon and I ended up working like in grants pass, working in rogue river at like the high school there.

Speaker: Um, and so it was really interesting. Like, you know, the yo-yo it's a circle is complete kind of thing. Right. So, yeah so yeah, we were in rogue river and then that day off there was that riverboat trip, uh,

Speaker: I was looking back through your weblog notes and it was kind of described and characterized as a rafting trip. But in fact, it was not a raft. They there were these, you know, super fast, high powered jet boats that skim along the river there. And it's hella fun.

Speaker: um I don't remember this at all. Where was I? Only half of us were there. So who all was with you on the on the trip? You know, I don't really remember who, like, it wasn't a thing where I was, like, with a specific set crew. It was, like, one of those things where the Warped Tour, you know, Kevin Lyman and Warped Tour, they had, like, a sign-up.

Speaker: Hey, do you want to go do the thing? And you just had to be at a certain time, and you'd go and get on the trip, right? So I just, yeah, like, some people weren't going. i just was like, oh, I'm going to go do this river thing and check it out.

Speaker: This place, yeah, we went on a raft. So I thought it was only accessible to this this food establishment. So we were on this raft. Beautiful scenery.

Speaker: Getting there. So is I rolling with Evalee and Ice-T. They was on this raft. And ah Ken, ah the bodyguard. Head of security for the team. head security. So he was there. So the FMX guys was They was kind of fucking with him a little bit.

Speaker: Trying to throw him overboard. And I'm just like, Roush. and So me and him, we just play fighting these guys. just to Anyway.

Speaker: And so it was fun because I was like sitting right in front of, you know, Ice-T was like You know, he was like the charismatic leader of the entire tour, right? Like he was the he was the alpha on in every room that he occupied and every space he walked into.

Speaker: So he was like there in the middle in the back next to the fans of the jet boat. And they had these the like water cannons, you know, that you'd shoot and they were having water fights between the jet boats and stuff. And I remember just sitting like just below Ice-T, like if he was a king on the throne,

Speaker: then I would be like sort of the you know the coresan or you know like the court jester perhaps ah down by his feet. And I just remember always like turning and looking up and he was saying all this funny shit all the time and hitting people with water cannons and everything.

Speaker: um But yeah, it was on the on the boat. There was like two or three boats full of the people from the tour. And you go and you go down the river and you see like wildlife and all the cool nature and everything. And then you get to the end and they have this lodge where they served us lunch. It was like barbecue, like big, like, uh, sort of buffet style barbecue meal.

Speaker: So it wasn't like upscale five star Michelin, five star, nothing like that. But it was nice enough to where you got to take a raft and then the atmosphere was just, it it was cool. It's not cheap. You know, it's like a, it's like a nice place. Like if you're in Southern Oregon, like that's the nice thing.

Speaker: That's like one of the nicest sort of attractions. Um, We're there and we're eating, having our meal. And it was some of the motocross guys like got into something. don't know. they're arguing.

Speaker: I just remember vaguely, very vaguely. Remember just like a table or two over. just People, are there's energy starts building and things start getting loud. You start seeing some shit flying. You know, some shit just gets started and then food just start flying. And then before you know it, it was like a full on fucking food fight with like, ah 60 adults or something fucking throwing plates of beans and potato salad and whatever and bread rolls and shit. It was was there's like an animal house or something. You know, like if you imagine cinematic. All my references, it's all cinematic ah allegory. So it's like animal house food fight, but in real life.

Speaker: Yeah, food just starts flying. Manager comes out from the back. Just like... What are you doing? Stop. You're making a mockery of whatever. you know just You're making a mockery of fine Oregon rural dining. Whitewater rafting. yeah bue Right. was just like, oh my God. So I'm just sitting there in the back. I'm like,

Speaker: oh Fuck. So Ice-T, Mark Live, the other guy that was with them, Evil, Shawnee Sean, they were just sitting in the back. They just like shaking their heads. Like, what the fuck is going on here? What the fuck? And as I recall, like... ah you know, more than but one or two of those motocross guys got yanked from the tour after that, that night, like Kevin Lyman, the producer was pissed, you know, cause this is ps like a fancy, classy establish establishment, you know, and there are these guys on tour and paid thousands of dollars probably right. For all these tickets for everybody to go do this thing. And then they look like, you know, total assholes, like trashing the place and sure the owners and operators were like,

Speaker: fucking charging them. know, there's probably some stuff in the contracts, right? So there's some cleaning fees attached to that whole ordeal, right? So after all said and done, everybody just started helping clean up and shit like that. It was it was the funniest thing. was just like, dude, y'all throwing every damn thing from mashed potatoes to salads to, you know, whatever was eating. It was getting thrown.

Speaker: So was the Jim, John Belushi movie. Animal House. Yeah, Animal House. Yeah, shit just getting thrown left and right. So, but no, they kind of cleaned up the best they could. But I promise your Warped Tour never showed back up there again.

Speaker: Yeah. Well, yeah, Kevin, Kevin was like super pissed off because like, I'm sure it was very much like a, you know, fucking dad can't take these kids anywhere kind of moment for him. yeah

Speaker: Cause we were saying that like, actually it ended up being a pretty good catering year. mean, once they got there, you know, once they got going, I remember being a, I mean, we all remember it being a great year, but you're saying that like, it took them a while to get going.

Speaker: that's what I remember anyway. Like I remember like ah maybe I didn't know about catering early on where I was just like, I didn't know like when they, when they, they, they probably stopped serving breakfast. Like, like after I woke up, right. It was probably like one of those things. um Oh, they did stop serving. Cause I remember, I remember that was one of my things was that I committed myself to getting up and over to catering before breakfast stopped being served.

Speaker: Like, and it was like, it was, And I felt like I was one of the, I was one of us who, I think Lau would get up early. Lau got up early to get the tent set up. And I felt like I was the only one who like jumped out of bed because I was out to get my morning smoothie because there was a cutoff time. The smoothies were so good.

Speaker: Yeah. I, I think I remember eating breakfast on that tour like three times. Like I never, i never. And by the time lunch rolled around, I was just like, give me all the damn food. I was just starving. But yeah, I didn't, I rarely made it out of bed for breakfast.

Speaker: Once I found catering and catering kind of got their act together. Like the reality is you're on Warped Tour, right? So there's a lot of people with, you know very alternative dietary preferences. And so, They actually they actually did do a great job of you offering yeah vegetarian and vegan options even.

Speaker: but ah But like you, Mark, i remember the smoothies. First thing in the morning, i would get off that bus and go go find the the berry smoothies they would make. They were fantastic. Yeah. Dude, I, like that summer, I decided, I was like, okay, um this is gonna be a yes this like a lot of work, crazy, we're really going, going, going. I can't get sick, okay? I'm gonna treat myself well.

Speaker: So I've made a promise, every day i am up for breakfast, I'm eating all the meals and taking a shower. That was my rule, every day. Like all the all meals, shower, boom.

Speaker: I still lost 15 pounds because I was just eating so well. Healthy, organic. like Yeah, it was amazing. yeah

Speaker: With it being our only work tour, we had no frame of reference that, you know, we keep on being told that basically we got the greatest year catering. Ever. because you ah Was it Timmy Chunks? Yeah. Yeah, it was Sherry. Sherry.

Speaker: Like Timmy Chunks' wife, Sherry, was like the caterer who, again, she was like on back in the real world, she catered for celebrities. Yeah. And movies and stuff too, didn't she? or Yeah, exactly. She did like craft services for like big movies and stuff. Sherry Chunks.

Speaker: I don't know if that was her last name, Cherry Chunks, but she made the best food and like craft services on tour was legit.

Speaker: I remember people talking about how like almost every other year was like, here's your can of Chef Boyardee. And the year that we were on it, we had, Sherry, who like in her day job catered for celebrities. Yeah. Like it was the best. Like I remember being like.

Speaker: The food was fantastic and and nobody would shut the fuck up about it. Every single meal we sat down, everybody was like, dude, this is so much better than last year. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit. Hey, God damn. Look at this actual salad. There's fucking lettuce in it and everything. Jesus Christ. For instance, the year 96 ninety six

Speaker: They had, you know, the um like the five-gallon igloo coolers that like yeah yeah like sports games that dump on the coach's head? Yeah. we They had those in catering so you could go up and get – and I'm not even joking.

Speaker: I don't know if it was iced tea or lemonade or what the fuck. It might have been tang. I don't remember what it was. But so they filled the thing with water. They dumped all this powder in. And whoever the whoever it was literally stuck his arm in and was staring at him.

Speaker: I'm not joking. Like, that's not a lie. oh And hence, Flag Wagon was like, fuck this. we are gonna We're going to take care of our crew.

Speaker: And they went to NoFX and said, this is what we're doing. NoFX was like, we're in. Amazing.

Speaker: you but Do you remember any of those other years? Do you remember any of that, Darren? I mean, i do remember some years having good catering and some years just being, oh, I'm eating quinoa, which I didn't know what that shit was back then. So, I mean, I was, you know, redneck Florida, I guess. And they were, you know,

Speaker: bougie LA catering. So who was supposed to know? Um, Lagwagon was the band that the whole barbecue thing yeah started by Lagwagon in, on the 96 Warped Tour because catering was so bad.

Speaker: I was working for NoFX. Um, Lagwagon went to NoFX. They, they got together and they said, this, this catering sucks. This is bullshit. Um, we're going to make our own laminates and we're going fucking, so no effects chipped in money every day. And I get chipped in money every day and they sent the runner out and they would go and they would get all this food to barbecue for the end of the night.

Speaker: So we didn't have to deal with catering. Fucking amazing. Nice. Yeah. Like, so we had, we had our own fuck. I i have it somewhere. You know, like a little said lag wagon had a picture of a barbecue on it and you like, you had to get it punched and stuff.

Speaker: No way. I love it. Yeah. So, so that, and that's what started the whole barbecue band thing. Right. Cause Kevin was like, this is fucking amazing.

Speaker: Kevin was like, saw what was going on. He was like, this is, we should do this regularly. Yeah. Or you should have a decent fucking caterer.

Speaker: Pennywise barbecues after the show, that was the shit. um And it was totally like, you know, they were in their way. They were like the sort of glue, the social, um central social hub, right, for everybody, all these different people from these different bands or, ah you know, walks of life or, so you know, whether you're a BMX person or a skate person or somebody working in production or doing different things. Everybody got together at the barbecues after the show every night.

Speaker: And that was hella fun and people get together and party and eat yummy barbecue. And that was like Pennywise and deviates doing that every night. so thought that was awesome.

Speaker: But you, I mean, you have to, cause there's nothing else around. You can't go anywhere. You can't leave. You don't have any transportation. So before Uber, before cell phones, before any sort of tethered line to, you know, reality.

Speaker: number move yeah We had each other. That's all we had. so yeah Yeah. Peanut butter and jelly from a gas station. Yeah.

Speaker: at At night, when you after you leave and hit the road. I

Speaker: i i didn't have a cell phone at the time. you know I was making calls from a phone booth. even remember. I'm not making calls. i don't remember. probably using... you're probably using the phone that I was supposed to be using to upload. Oh, actually, I forgot. I forgot. Greg gave me, I forgot.

Speaker: Greg gave me a company phone. Okay. Here's a good story. So Greg gave, Greg gave me a company phone. I'd never had a cell phone before. And one day, not very far into the fucking tour. I mean, like within the first couple of weeks, I'm in one of the porta potty, like a trailers taking a shit.

Speaker: no i got I go, yeah, you know it's coming. So I take a shit and I get up and it comes off the clip on my waistband and drops into the fucking toilet. oh Bro, like I grabbed it.

Speaker: I mean, I just grabbed it i don't know what to do I grabbed it. I tried to wash it. And then I made excuses why it didn't work anymore. I didn't tell him what actually happened. I didn't tell what actually happened. i don' This is the first time he finds out what happened to that fucking Nokia. don't know, man. I don't know what happened. He just fucking quit working. It's not working. It's not working. I don't know what happened. Yeah. good i I don't yeah don't think he replaced it. I don't think he replaced it either. If I remember correctly. It takes a lot. I mean, and and this is like this is like the old Nokia soap bars, man. It took a lot to, like, you could go through, like, full nuclear fucking wasteland with one of those things, and it wouldn't even lose charge. so Well, not not waterproof, apparently. Yeah, not port-a-potty approved.

Speaker: Yeah.
