Welcome to Being Bolder, a podcast diving in to our team's adventures creating BOLDer Magazine, a monthly earth science magazine all about where things come from, and why we care.  We like to say that BOLDer is for kids 8-80 and hope that everyone who reads it gets just a little more curious about where the natural resources we use in our everyday lives come from, and why it matters so much.

Introduction to Being Bolder Podcast

00:00:17
beingbolderpodcast
welcome to being bolder.
00:00:19
Bronwyn
Hi, Ruston.
00:00:19
beingbolderpodcast
My name is Russ. ah Yeah. My name is Reston Hamilton. We are starting off good. That's okay. This is Bronwyn Weaver. Bronwyn, how are you today?
00:00:27
Bronwyn
I'm doing great. We are so excited to get started. We're talking all over each other. So anyway, it's an exciting day.
00:00:32
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.

Why Start the Podcast?

00:00:35
beingbolderpodcast
It is an exciting day and and um we're going to tell you why we are here. I think we're going to start with that and um and then we can maybe get into a little bit of our backgrounds and so forth. But this is a podcast that has really come into existence because of a magazine.
00:00:55
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:00:55
beingbolderpodcast
And, um, we are putting out a, uh, a publication that is really meant, we we say for kids eight to 80, uh, specifically it's probably geared towards kids like eight to 12, something like that. But, but this isn't a magazine. This is not, so not something that's also a virtual, not something you're going to see online. It's a real magazine, Bronwyn. So you tell our audience about what we are doing specifically, please.
00:01:23
Bronwyn
Okay. All right.

Purpose and Audience of the Magazine

00:01:24
Bronwyn
Well, and this is, you know, the pressure is on because not only have we been working for more than a year to create this product to debut the magazine, but we've been over the last two or three months really stewing on how we're going to tell the world. So I'll do my best, but I think that's part of the reason why we decided to do a podcast is that there's so much to tell about what we're trying to do.
00:01:52
Bronwyn
what we hope to be with the help of our subscribers, that this is going to be an ongoing conversation. And we are, we're committed to have this conversation regularly, to bring you up to speed, ah to ask for your input, and to really make you part of the family here at Boulder Magazine. So, okay.
00:02:17
Bronwyn
What is our purpose? Our purpose is really clear to our team. Our purpose is to create a monthly magazine where we can have a relationship with our readers and bring to them all the things that we really love about, well, learning where things come from.
00:02:39
Bronwyn
And it's not just a simple discovery. This is, as we have been pulling on these threads and discovering more and more, this is about all of our natural resources that we use every day. And maybe we don't appreciate to the extent that we should or to the extent that we can about where they come from how they came to be discovered, how the processes of using these natural resources continue to get better, more sophisticated, more ah sustainable. And then who are the people that make all of this happen behind the scenes that we don't
00:03:29
Bronwyn
we We maybe aren't exposed to how these resources come to be used or um how the whole thing comes to be, how it makes it easy for us to drive down the road to be able to use things like our cell phones to the common everyday things um that that we're really dependent on. So its it's it's kind of this exciting thing that we want to reveal to our readers.

Magazine Content and Focus Areas

00:04:01
beingbolderpodcast
Well, and I, you know, you've said to me that this is essentially like an earth science publication. We're getting into, to be more specific about it basically.
00:04:13
Bronwyn
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:04:13
beingbolderpodcast
And, and I, and by the way, I think. There are so many things that happen in this publication that ah sometimes it's actually hard to just describe it in like a sentence and so forth.
00:04:23
beingbolderpodcast
But, but, you know, it is really talking about what the earth has to provide in terms of resources and then how those resources are tend turned into things that make life better for us.
00:04:31
Bronwyn
Yes.
00:04:37
beingbolderpodcast
And it could, and and then a lot of indirect stuff as well. And so, so if you're picking up that, well,
00:04:41
Bronwyn
Yes.
00:04:45
beingbolderpodcast
You know, it sounds like there's a lot going on there. That's the truth. There is kind of a lot going on here, but I love what you said earlier when you said it's about how things are made and and then why it matters.
00:04:59
beingbolderpodcast
Why, why does it matter that we use rocks that come from quarries or all around our country?
00:04:59
Bronwyn
yes
00:05:07
beingbolderpodcast
What matters because they help create roads, all the roads that we, that we drive on and ride on and so forth. And so that's just an example.
00:05:14
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:05:16
beingbolderpodcast
Um, give another, give another example or two, you can pull it from the first issue if you want about what people will learn about with bolder publication.
00:05:24
Bronwyn
Well, i ah you know, I think you're right. and And maybe even before I jump into that, and we really talk about the content of the first issue. but there is um write of right away, we realized that yes, there's a targeted young person group, and those are usually fourth graders through seventh graders that are learning earth science in school. And earth science, whereas when I was going to school, would have been a curriculum for an entire year, and maybe even you'd hit it once at the end of elementary school and then into junior high,
00:06:08
Bronwyn
and and go even deeper into geology and geography. But now it's really a hit or miss. And so we want to support that education for that fourth through seventh grade target. But what we found is that almost everybody who has reviewed our first issue of the magazine has said has noted about something fun, cool, that they learned in just passing. And so um werere we put on our are our sub-head after Boulder magazine is that it's for kids from 8 to 80. So keep that in mind as we talk a little bit about our content.
00:06:46
Bronwyn
We really want it to be for everybody. And we're putting the energy into designing it, into the content, even to the length and the the

Engagement and Interactive Elements

00:06:55
Bronwyn
kind of paper we're using so that it makes it this really cool, fun experience no matter how old you are, um no matter what you've been exposed to, whether you are the family of somebody who works in the quarrying or mining industry,
00:07:13
Bronwyn
or whether you are a teacher, maybe you're a homeschooling parent, um or you're that 10-year-old kid who is just discovering being outdoors and all the things that there are to learn about earth science and and nature in general.
00:07:32
Bronwyn
So I'm going to work backwards.
00:07:34
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:07:35
Bronwyn
Ruston, I know you just asked me about some of the content.
00:07:38
beingbolderpodcast
Well, I'm going to just kind of reinforce something you said, Bronwyn, and that is that there is no upper limit to from an age standpoint to this publication.
00:07:40
Bronwyn
OK.
00:07:44
Bronwyn
Right.
00:07:47
beingbolderpodcast
It's very specifically written. You can say there's a lower limit, eight to nine years old and so forth. And that's that that is correct.
00:07:52
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:07:53
beingbolderpodcast
But there is an adult can read this publication and they wouldn't think twice about ah the fact that, you know, um kids could also be reading it as well.
00:08:04
Bronwyn
Yeah, absolutely. And in fact, one of the things you can see if you're listening to this, we have really been working at like, what is our elevator pitch when somebody asks us this magazine and we've landed on. It's about where things come from and why we care.
00:08:23
Bronwyn
And, you know, that is the the the simplest definition that we've landed on. The other thing is that, yeah, it's for kids from 8 to 80 and hopefully that makes you kind of smile, but it's really for the whole family. And so that's our audience is everybody. It's the whole family. We want to reinforce um all of the fun, all of the stuff that we as a team really enjoy about working in and around natural resources. And we'll get into that later more in other podcasts. But for just a taste of the things that are in this magazine,
00:09:04
Bronwyn
Number one, the cover itself was kind of fun. We created a map, and if you look at it, everything in here has some tie back to the content in the magazine. We thought that would be kind of fun and um a visual representation of the way we're approaching some of these subjects. Inside, well, I just turned to a page why we dredge.
00:09:30
Bronwyn
um Maybe you don't even know what a dredge is. This is a huge piece of equipment that is designed to make our waterways navigable.
00:09:41
Bronwyn
um it's it's ah It's a huge machine and actually, Rustin, maybe you can describe being there in person to see this amazing big machine in the Port of New Orleans get um christened and launched and all the things we learned about it.
00:09:57
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:10:00
beingbolderpodcast
Well, so dredges in general are really cool because it's and this is a really good example because this is something that people would not think about. And so that's why we have it in here is we want people to think about this kind of stuff and why things are used and so forth.
00:10:16
beingbolderpodcast
So a dredge, for instance, and we shot this on the Mississippi River, ah the photo photography and the video that that came along with it, which was cool in and of itself.
00:10:24
Bronwyn
Yeah, there's a beautiful picture beautiful picture of the of the dredge and the port of New Orleans right in the background.
00:10:26
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah. Right. Yeah. and there And the whole point of that machine is basically to scoop sediment off off the bottom of rivers and it can do the same thing out in the ocean um to basically make it so there's more room for barges and other boats to be able to, as you as you said, um you know, to make it na navigable, you know, so people so boats can get up and down.
00:10:55
beingbolderpodcast
And which is really important to how our our economy works. A lot of people don't realize just how many goods are shipped up and down the country um using our rivers and so forth.
00:11:04
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:11:06
beingbolderpodcast
So dredges are actually super important, which makes them super interesting.
00:11:11
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:11:11
beingbolderpodcast
And ah anyway, so it's just it's just an example of ah but one example of something that we've done in the publication.
00:11:19
Bronwyn
And you know, even at the end of it, we have some a page that's a little bit interactive. We're hoping that the magazine, the way it's designed, the quality of the paper would, if you're looking at it, we have a prompt for a story and we've even begun it for you. So just to let your imagination take this information and roll with it. And um we're hoping that this is a great little beginning to some storytelling that um a kid will come up with if they read it. It might even be something that you or any reader would be prompted to to write about.
00:11:59
Bronwyn
And you know one of the things ah that that I love about what we're doing um is that it allows us to throw out even vocabulary.
00:12:12
Bronwyn
you know That's a verb, to dredge up something.
00:12:16
Bronwyn
And it's only when you understand that this machine called a dredge is scooping up the the bottom sediment to make it ah deep enough so that a ship or a shipping, ah transportation, boating um canals can be opened up.
00:12:16
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:12:36
Bronwyn
That gives you a whole other layer of meaning behind that verb that people may use and kind of know what it means, but they don't have that visual thing in their head.
00:12:46
Bronwyn
So anyway, it's one of those.
00:12:47
beingbolderpodcast
yeah
00:12:48
Bronwyn
It's a little obscure, but it's one of those things that I loved about ah doing this article. And just to give you.
00:12:53
beingbolderpodcast
What are to some?
00:12:54
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:12:55
beingbolderpodcast
I was just going to say, maybe give them another example of another article that's in there as well that's vastly different from that.
00:12:58
Bronwyn
Sure. Well, this one, yeah, this one, we did a series about the difference between a moth and a butterfly, and people don't often understand butterflies always get all the attention, you know, butterfly gardens and how beautiful butterflies are, but they're actually a subset of moths. And so we did a couple of pages on ah the evolution of moths that they came that that dinosaurs could actually munch on moths and that much later the butterflies evolved as kind of a subset. And so that was kind of fun. We also highlighted some of the most amazing, beautiful moths that only come out at night because that's when moths thrive. Butterflies are during the day, moths are at night.
00:13:49
Bronwyn
And in fact, we even went into a description about what you could do in your own backyard to hang a sheet. There's a specific recipe um that you put on a sheet and throw a black light on it.
00:14:05
Bronwyn
And you can attract moths so that you can do your own moth identification. We thought that might be a fun summertime thing for a family.
00:14:13
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:14:13
Bronwyn
And I want to put this out here, too, so that maybe you can see it. this is you know our Our magazine is only in print because we know how important it is to have something you hold in your hands and to get off technology, especially for kids. But we are not anti-technology as a team. We understand it's an important tool for teaching. And so you'll see QR codes throughout our magazine that lead you to bonus content.
00:14:44
Bronwyn
And this ah QR code right here in the magazine, ah Tina, awesome team member, she is always looking for things that take the teaching kind of to the next level. She found a video of a moth flying in slow motion that she thought would be really important to share, would give a whole nother experience to ah learning about moths.
00:15:10
Bronwyn
So that's what you would see ah in the bonus content. um It actually leads you back to our website. And if you have a magazine and a QR code, then you can get on to the bonus content section. And I know in our next few podcasts, we'll dive into some of the other things in this first issue to give you a real taste But, ah boy, we really appreciate you taking the leap with us, being a part of this podcast, and um we're going to really enjoy talking with you, sharing with you, and maybe even asking for your feedback so you can help make Boulder Magazine a better and better publication.
00:15:52
beingbolderpodcast
Absolutely. Yeah, so we're going to be doing this podcast um pretty much every day, I think a minimum of four days a week anyway. And and so if you want to to to join us, ah you are going to get a taste of how a publication is being put together in this day and age. And and that is something let me just tell you, it's not normal, um but You know, that's part of the reason why

Print vs. Digital Magazines

00:16:23
beingbolderpodcast
we're doing it.
00:16:23
beingbolderpodcast
As Bronwyn said, we just want to get something physical in the hands of kids that where they that they can learn from. And and and so it's that's that's part of the reason why we're doing this.
00:16:30
Bronwyn
Oh, yeah. In fact, I want to jump in on that.
00:16:34
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:16:34
Bronwyn
Yeah, absolutely. weve We have invested in the texture of our cover is actually pretty tactile. There is little bits of silica sand.
00:16:45
Bronwyn
So that that's actually what is in that cover that gives it a feeling of like very fine sandpaper. ah which is kind of awesome and it's perfect bound which means it has a spine and Unlike some of the magazines that you get that by the second time you've read through it the pages start to fall out This is built to last it's built to have um things to do um Projects
00:16:53
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:17:12
Bronwyn
ah This is a keeper so that you can hand it down in your family and it will withstand the test of time and One last thing before we sign off on this first issue. This is a little bit longer than what will likely go um But again, this is our first one and I think the next podcasts are going to be designed to be shorter but at any rate I did want to mention that part of the reason why we were bold enough to do this magazine this way and is that there is such a trend of magazines coming back in print.
00:17:25
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah.
00:17:44
Bronwyn
ah Magazines that ah thought that they were maybe only going to be digital um now are finding new legs back in print. um And so that's kind of a ride.

Closing Remarks and Future Plans

00:17:56
Bronwyn
That's a wave we're riding as a team because we know how important it is to have something that is in the backseat of a car or is on your front porch where you can sit and enjoy and not feel like you are um just part of the white noise that is kind of everything digital.
00:18:18
Bronwyn
So thanks again.
00:18:18
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah, and if you do but and if you do take it to the backseat of a car we have inserted Dramamine a little pack of that in there just so there's no throwing up or anything when Okay, we didn't do that.
00:18:25
Bronwyn
we haven
00:18:29
Bronwyn
Well, there that is true. That is a danger.
00:18:30
beingbolderpodcast
We didn't know that So this is this is gonna be awesome.
00:18:31
Bronwyn
Okay. Yeah. Good point.
00:18:35
beingbolderpodcast
We you know stay with us because we'll be doing a little storytelling along the way and it'll it'll be even more casual as we go on and on with this but and We hope you'll get to know us and then let us know that you're out there.
00:18:40
Bronwyn
Yeah.
00:18:48
beingbolderpodcast
It'll be a lot of fun. So we will sign off.
00:18:50
Bronwyn
And yep, just the last thing, go to boldermagazine.com.
00:18:50
beingbolderpodcast
Yeah, go ahead.
00:18:55
Bronwyn
And anytime you want to get a hold of Rest in our Eye, you can email us at info at boldermagazine.com. We would love to hear from you.
00:19:06
beingbolderpodcast
Absolutely. All right. Signing off.
00:19:08
Bronwyn
Okay, see ya, bye bye.
00:19:08
beingbolderpodcast
I'll talk to you tomorrow.
