Introduction to What The Pod Revamp
00:00:01
Speaker
What's going on, y'all? It's DJ Tracy Treese, and welcome to What The Pod. Man, I am back, back, back, live. With a new version of What The Pod, this is basically What The Pod recap. So all week, I'm going to give you What The Pod, where we go over my podcast recommendations that I got going for you.
00:00:24
Speaker
and where I think you should be focusing on in the podcast industry.
Engagement and Social Media Invitation
00:00:28
Speaker
So a little bit of both of those, and now that I got a bunch more time, because I'm not DJing as much and gigging going around the country and all that, I really want to breathe some life into the show. So thank you all for joining me. The lighting is kind of weird because it's 4 p.m. in LA and the sun is behind me. It was like perfect lighting until five seconds ago. And I'm like, dang, now I look like I'm on the witness protection program.
Spotify Playlists and Discovery Tips
00:00:49
Speaker
So if you're not looking at this and you're listening to this later,
00:00:52
Speaker
you know reference exactly what I'm saying you know I'm talking about so um yeah so I just want to say this is a new format as I'm tweaking and I'm figuring it out I'm gonna keep kind of changing it to see what works for me see what works for my flow and um I hope y'all enjoy it man I really want y'all to help uh support me by getting on YouTube getting on Twitch um and definitely following me on Instagram and TikTok because I'm putting a lot of energy and um into those formats but um
00:01:20
Speaker
Let's jump right into what the pod so Now the problem with this this is really is as I'm as I'm picking what podcast I'm listening to during the week I'm usually writing it out in a huge Google Doc I'm finding that I'm more and more of an author every day. So it's like
00:01:38
Speaker
Now I'm taking the time to actually write, take notes and all of that. And it's after I write it, I got to put it into a podcast form. So I'm really trying to work on being more free flowing and rolling with the punches here. So I've got five podcasts here. I've made a playlist on Spotify. So if you follow me there, you can always be able to see what podcast I'm listening to. But I have a lot of tips and tricks to look through the podcast world and find new shows to listen to. Because if you just go to Apple,
00:02:06
Speaker
Or if you listen in Stitcher or whatever the podcast app is, you know, you can really be restricted because you only sometimes see what they allow you to see, which is not the greatest experience overall. So let's jump in.
HBO's Truest Blood Podcast Insight
00:02:23
Speaker
So the first podcast that we want to talk, I want to talk about is Truest Blood. So HBO actually has a podcast which is new for people in the podcast world. But I saw this one coming.
00:02:36
Speaker
Um, give me a sec. Let me make sure this is loop and see this is little stuff that's supposed to be already here. What's going on.
00:02:44
Speaker
All right, so like I said, HBO. So HBO has a podcast now. So they've taken like movie and show content and they're now creating podcasts based on it. So this one is Truest Blood, which is a cool concept because I don't like really sitting down and watching long TV series and long movies. And most people who really know me know that I'm not that in the TV to follow something so far, except for Blacklist. Blacklist, we've been, we've been rocking with that one for a minute now here recently,
00:03:13
Speaker
But before that was like Burn Notice, like Seinfeld, Golden Girls. It's only a couple of shows that I've seen a bunch of the episodes for. So I love the fact that now they're coming out with these shows in podcast form. So let's pause the music here. Let's listen in on the trailer for this one. Rock with me.
00:03:43
Speaker
If you're here, you're probably a fangbanger. I'm Deborah Ann Wall. And I'm Kristen Bowne. And this is Truest Blood, the only official True Blood podcast. Hit subscribe right now to be notified when we sink our teeth into a new episode every week, starting from the very beginning. We'll be discussing how the show was made with the people that made it, our friends, a cast and crew so wild it woke the dead.
00:04:12
Speaker
Deb, I have a confession. Why? I've never actually seen it. Oh my God, actually me neither. What? We're both True Blood virgins. We'll watch it together for the first time. I love that. So everyone out there, whether you've seen the show or not, join us and watch the HBO original True Blood on HBO Max. We'll cover the true stories from the set, the blood, both fake and real, and all the sexy bites in between. Don't worry, you've been invited in.
00:04:42
Speaker
Oh my God, what would Pam think if she had to do a podcast with Jessica? Oh my gosh. Well, normally Pam wouldn't listen to a damn podcast, but if it's True as Blood and Pam is on, she'd be the first one to subscribe. Me too. So be sure to share with your fellow fangbangers that you can watch all of True Blood right now on HBO Max. And we'll see you and Bon Tom real soon.
00:05:09
Speaker
All right, I think that's pretty dope. Like I said, I think that more and more we're going to start to see TV content, movie content inside of podcasts. So this, you know, is Halloween is coming up. I thought I'd throw a little spooky. That's, that's probably as spooky as I got to be honest, but
00:05:28
Speaker
That's a pretty cool thing. I'm probably going to listen in to one or two episodes. I do feel like you have to be a True Blood fan to kind of pick it up or be willing to start to listen to the episodes. I'm sorry to watch the episodes on TV to kind of follow the podcast along a little bit better. So I'm not that committed, but I am excited because like we're just getting a new format of podcasts. So that's awesome.
00:05:49
Speaker
I can't wait. Y'all check out True Blood and the description will have the link to that one. True is Blood.
Jamel Hill's Podcast Overview
00:05:58
Speaker
All right. The next one that I want to talk about is Jamel Hill is Unbothered. Jamel Hill is Unbothered. Now this show, I haven't listened
00:06:07
Speaker
to a whole bunch of it. And this is my first time actually listening to the show, but she is living my dream, right? She's got this Spotify deal. She's really working with black women in the media to create the narrative and to change the story into our perspective. So I love the fact that, you know, she just has that in her and she's also like employing people in the community. Like she's really
00:06:28
Speaker
making the name for herself in the audio format and I love that, love that, love that as well as spreading it to up and coming people like me. So super inspirational. This specific episode that I'm listening in on had Tiffany Haddish in it and we just recently saw Tiffany Haddish at a pop-up
00:06:45
Speaker
across the street in our building. They had a pop-up comedy show and Tiffany Haddish popped up. It was lit. To be honest, I loved Tiffany Haddish, but I wasn't a true Tiffany Haddish fan until I got to interact with her very closely in a small show because the way that she was doing it was just telling stories. It was super relatable. It was still motivational. I didn't know she was from LA, so this was home for her.
00:07:10
Speaker
It was all phenomenal. So this specific episode, we don't have to listen in on this one, but it's real.
00:07:21
Speaker
You can just, she just spitting from the hip right there. About being sexually assaulted and harassed. Harvey Weinstein never sees one day in jail without Me Too and neither does R. Kelly. To reduce that movement to being quote, stupid was a miss, especially since it came at the expense of undercutting a black woman who had done something awfully courageous and landscape shifting. Again, if Chappelle wanted to make the point about the racism and white feminism, the answer to the question is Tarana Burt, who
00:07:51
Speaker
All right, so as you can see, she opens it up. She's going in about the Dave Chappelle situation, but she has Tiffany Haddish on later in the episode. So definitely check out Jamel Hill is bothered. She's got a nice cadence. I can listen to it a little bit faster. You know, all these people from Chicago who like to listen to podcasts super fast.
00:08:08
Speaker
1.25, 1.5X, that's usually what I listen in on. But this is a good one. It seems like one that you can just add to your mix if you want to stay up to date on all things social justice and pop culture, especially Jamel Hill definitely has a great show that way.
The Read Podcast Recommendation
00:08:26
Speaker
Now, another one that I want to talk about today is the read. The read is a good one. This is one of the ones that's an oldie but goodie, but one that for sure I listened to a little bit faster because it's just a different
00:08:38
Speaker
cadence of show, but let me let you listen in on how I, where I'm at in this episode right here. You all the meetings in my office as my office is the biggest, you know, my office can see six. So I'm leaving every lunch, like, whoa, back to my office girl.
00:09:07
Speaker
Yeah, so they're in the middle of a story right now if somebody wrote in. Definitely check out the read. That one's a little bit longer. So if you've got a little road trip or maybe you want to start listening on your commute in and then finishing on your lunch break, something like that, or if you could listen to podcasts at your job, that is definitely a good one. So check out the read if you haven't ever checked out that one. Now, this next one is a little bit, like I said before, with podcasts, formats changing.
Historic Interviews with Let's Talk to Lucy
00:09:34
Speaker
They actually came out with a podcast
00:09:36
Speaker
from the past. So this one is Lucille Ball, which I thought was so cool. She was actually one of the first women, like first podcasters period. They're saying that she is the first person recorded in history to have had a podcast back in the day, like worked out a business show. So they've actually bought this show back. She did all of these interviews, these awesome interviews with different people in the past. And we get to listen in, even though she's gone on. What an awesome way to catalog history. So this is a little bit of the podcast. Let's talk Lucy.
00:10:06
Speaker
This is Let's Talk to Lucy, starring Lucille Ball. A very warm welcome to you all. I'm Gary Morton, and now, Let's Talk to Lucy.
00:10:18
Speaker
Hi, this is Lucy. And as Gary said, welcome. Welcome to our very first show. This is a very exciting event for me to be back on radio. Now you might ask what's so exciting about a radio show in view of all the television I do. Well, most of my professional life, I have been saying words somebody else wrote for me. Oh, I've had some pretty wonderful writers. But nevertheless, I've been playing a role. And now I just want to be me, Lucille Ball.
00:10:47
Speaker
Come on come on with the podcast. Oh, yeah. Yeah, check out. Let's talk Lucy. I think it's awesome. It sounds so real I love that they've remastered the audio and it just goes to show, you know podcast been around forever, right? Like check out Let's talk Lucy So many good episodes of people from
Halloween Podcasts and Treat Movie
00:11:04
Speaker
the past. All right, Halloween is coming up Halloween is coming up This this podcast is something scary and it's one that I love because I work with it now
00:11:13
Speaker
The podcast, there's a podcast promo in here for a treat. The movie is that it's right at the beginning. She's like introducing us to, to hear it and let's, let's listen in on that. Sorry. Kiernan Shipka, a brand new podcast movie from C 13 features.
00:11:36
Speaker
It's like nothing you've heard before. Literally a podcast movie. One episode, one story, one wild ride. But the story that thrills, chills, and will keep you hooked from start to finish. Listen to this short preview and then go find and listen to treat wherever you get your podcasts.
00:11:55
Speaker
My name is Kiernan Shipka. I play the role of Ally in the new podcast, Treat, a new movie-length podcast from C13 Features. This is Dry Creek, Massachusetts. It's the day before Halloween, so, you know, autumn leaves everywhere, jack-o'-lanterns on every doorstep. It's like a goddamn Norman Rockwell painting.
00:12:24
Speaker
But like everything sweet, there was rot hiding underneath. There's something coming to Ali West's not-so-perfect little town. What the hell is that? It was a bus. As it rattled by, rows of what looked like children turned their heads and stared at us. Their eyes were like dark holes pushed into clay.
00:12:52
Speaker
Every place has its secrets. Did you ever tell anyone that we were the ones that got that letter this time? So spooky. No, I didn't even tell anybody you're still alive. The people of Dry Creek call theirs the Piper. Oh my god, it's the bus. It's out front. It's nice. Get away from the window. Their eyes are empty. They don't have any eyes. Deborah, don't open the door. Don't open the door.
00:13:22
Speaker
Y'all are crazy. Y'all listenin' to stuff like this. This is nuts. These things. They're not kids. They're from him. From C-13 Features, a new kind of listening experience. This is the whole new world. Oh my God. Allie, you just need to take Robbie and find a safe place, okay? It's too late for that, Dad. It's way too late. Kiernan Shipka in.
00:14:07
Speaker
We have to hide. There's no more left to hide.
00:14:12
Speaker
That's crazy. That's crazy. Y'all can't tell me that this level of podcasting that we at is not nuts. They've got podcast movies out and that feels almost real and it has no visual part to it. This is
00:14:29
Speaker
a whole new world. So check out tree. I can't say that I'm a listen. I think that that would, that trailer was enough spook for me for the whole Halloween, but check out tree and then check out something scary. She does scary, um, uh, scary stories, uh, Markia for, um, something scary as well. So check that one out. If you really liked that crime, just scary
Crime Junkie and Gabby Petito Episode
00:14:49
Speaker
kind of thing. And we're going into crime junkie right now. Now this one,
00:14:53
Speaker
I don't understand how y'all listen to Crime Junkie and go to work or listen to Crime Junkie and be going to pick your kids up from school. I don't know what's wrong with y'all, but this show is creepy to me only because they telling these live stories. Now, this one was just that news story that was going on and it was viral and it was all over, you know, the actual FBI was searching and everything. It's Gabby Petito's story.
00:15:17
Speaker
But they actually covered it. Let's listen a little bit here. Morning, her mother and stepfather reported Gabby missing in Suffolk County, New York, where they live. Police seem to have taken the report pretty seriously since the same day they contacted police in Northport where Laundrie's family lived. And they asked them to go down there and basically see what's up, do a welfare check, maybe see if they have been able to get a hold of Brian, who is supposed to be with Gabby.
00:16:02
Speaker
solo. So we've heard this story. Crime Junkie covers it. The music adds to it. I love it. Everybody, when I asked what podcast they were listening to, they was like, you got to talk about you got to talk about crime junkie. I don't listen to this one every single week, but I'll check in on it, even though I probably listen to like two to three podcasts per day, if not more.
00:16:23
Speaker
but in super fast speed, mostly because I work in podcast advertising. So podcasts are literally my life.
Love for Podcasts in Daily Life
00:16:31
Speaker
From the time that I wake up until the time that I go to sleep, there's a podcast situation. Even my meditations are podcasts. Manifestations kind of things are podcasts. It's just all over everything. And I love it so much. I love it here. This life is wonderful.
00:16:48
Speaker
That is all for today, folks. And I suggest you listen to your podcast with me. Let me know which podcast you're listening to on Instagram, Facebook, all those things. This has been What's The Pod.
