Introduction and Recap

00:00:09
Speaker
D20 radio, your game is roll.
00:00:26
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Eberron Renewed, a D&D 5th edition actual play podcast set in the Eberron campaign setting. I am your dungeon master, Eric. And I'm Philip. I'm Randy.
00:00:36
Speaker
I'm Jeff. And welcome to another episode. We would like to start things off by thanking our wonderful show sponsors. This episode is brought to you by the generous donations of Irene Villarito, Laura Pickron, Jessica Smith, Ryan Royce, Darren Katska, Darryl Delaney, Seacomp5950, and Nico Batson. Thank you all so much. Okay, so gentlemen, what happened last time?
00:01:02
Speaker
uh bathtubs and magic kind of the feel of a season finale yeah i can combine that wouldn't you know it lined up with a year of the show going we returned to storm reach we're fought we're attacked by assassins who are using some alternate rule of the scrying spell to track us magically phillip's a little salty apparently
00:01:29
Speaker
Yeah, we I mean, we got back to Stormreach. We found out that the the king has basically declared martial law in Breland. We went to a bathhouse. Each of us had different experiences. One of them was consequential. The other two were silly. But ultimately what we have decided, we made it back to borrowed time and had a discussion. We've decided we're going to stay in Stormreach for a while and just kind of gather information. Anything you would like to add,

Dex's Dilemma

00:01:57
Speaker
Randy?
00:01:59
Speaker
Seems like they covered it pretty well to me Well, we we also met some lycanthropes. Oh we did do that was that I thought that's episode two That was the conversation was episode three. That's right. Yeah. Yeah, it was the beginning of episode. You're right Yeah, we met some lycanthropes and they have a proposition for Dex to become a lycanthrope again They tell him that if he they do it he does it their way. He will be able to have better control When he turns involuntarily
00:02:29
Speaker
Yeah, Barrick is obviously not too pleased with it. And Dex is genuinely on the fence. He knows that he can start learning from them and he can figure things out without making any sort of life oath. So he's figuring things out.

Life in Stormreach

00:02:47
Speaker
Okay, since we ended the last episode, it's been two weeks since you've returned to Stormreach. Your attempts to contact Varen last site were trounced when you were told by the head of his household that he was out of the city on Stormlord business.
00:03:03
Speaker
but that he would gladly deliver any message you desired to him. That's such a, I don't want to, I don't have time for this right now, sort of secretary answer. Um, the past two weeks have been fairly full for each of you as you take some much needed time for yourselves. So now

Barak's Training

00:03:18
Speaker
we'll just go around the table and talk about the past two weeks in whatever your character would like to share. So Barak, what has Barak been up to?
00:03:27
Speaker
Barak has made inquiries in the city with someone looking for someone to essentially help him be better with a sword in general. Barak probably had some lessons at school, but mostly he's been getting by on the fact that the sword he has
00:03:45
Speaker
has something of a mind of its own, and Beric would like to be a little more in charge of the situation. So

Barak's Secret Letter

00:03:52
Speaker
he has been spending some time training with a couple of different swordsmen in the city. One of them is a Stormlord, Lady Paolo O'Marin, that we met at the dinner, who's apparently also a famous duelist.
00:04:12
Speaker
And so she's been training Barak in some new fighting techniques. And then he's also come across in his inquiries a slightly shadier name, a guy named Daedric Benar, who is a renowned sort of street duelist. And in training with him, Barak has found that Benar has a greater understanding of magic than Ammarin and
00:04:42
Speaker
There's something suspicious and familiar about Benar's grasp of magic with with Barak from Barak's perspective, but it's been useful. And so Benar has been training Barak in
00:05:00
Speaker
Eric allowed us in this if we wanted to do any sort of retraining with our characters. Eric has retrained his level of Paladin into a level of Kensei through Benar's instruction since Benar is a Kensei, among other things. So that's the main thing that Barakas spent his days doing. He's been out a lot.
00:05:26
Speaker
he's still traveling to the keep of the silver flame in the temple district in storm reach where he spends some time meditating each morning after his first sword lesson of the day and trying to find a connection again to the silver flame and then
00:05:49
Speaker
absolutely without telling any of his companions. He's also written

Podcast Banter

00:05:54
Speaker
a signed letter to the sharn inquisitive in which he has laid out the following information. Hadith Iruinarn is a terrorist called the red owl and leader of the swords of liberty. This is known to the citadel and to the king. Recent events including the bombing in sharn, their framing and the dissolution of parliament seem to be calculated to bring about the resumption of the war and
00:06:19
Speaker
and ends his letter by making the point that Breland has always believed in representative government and the governments are instituted among men for the support of their natural rights and when government stops fulfilling these purposes, it is the right of the people to change or abolish it. And he signs it, since apparently it doesn't matter, since they can find us wherever we are in Eberron, so hiding is useless.
00:06:41
Speaker
some shady business right there, if I do say so myself. Okay. And I do. And I do as well. Randy, you want to get on this? I would have to agree. Okay. You like DME for us again, Eric? Yeah. Chris, please come back.
00:06:58
Speaker
Yeah, Chris, please I didn't mean it far. We love you. I love Eric. He's one of my dearest friends Which is why we can treat him this and he's a very good DM like 87% I'm gonna I'm gonna cut most of this Okay Don't want to
00:07:25
Speaker
I've noticed that Eric does cut a lot of our heckling of him out. Yeah. I don't want the listeners to think you guys are jerks. Yeah, that's what it is. Although not his own vulgar language. Filthy word. I've never heard it used in that context, honestly. I just want to say one thing.
00:07:43
Speaker
When I looked it up after you sent me that, the secondary definition is somebody acting silly or foolish. And that's just the

Dex's Investigation

00:07:50
Speaker
context I have genuinely heard it in my whole life. I've only ever known it as a ****. No, I've never heard it in that context. I just want to say one thing. I've played D&D since the 70s. OK, off and on. Not nearly as deep into it as a couple of my friends sitting at the table. And it's tough to DM.
00:08:14
Speaker
So, say I'm gonna build you up now. Thank you. Before they tear me back down. Yeah. Or you tear me back down. You're doing something hard, Eric. Well, as somebody who has DMed and knows how much time it takes to put into something, I would say you and Phillip. I'll even add Phillip. You guys go like way above and beyond. Thank you.
00:08:36
Speaker
And it's not easy. Like the typical DM, take what he does, take you two guys, multiply that at least times two.
00:08:45
Speaker
And the last thing I want to say is whether you cut it or not, I have more fun playing with you guys than I think I've had playing with anybody ever. Thank you. Well, if you leave that in, you do have to leave our heckling in to balance the mood of the room. Yeah. Yeah. I don't want a DM. It seems real tough and I have no desire to. So any crap I give you is.
00:09:07
Speaker
I mean, it's still valid, but it's not that hard really to just like to follow it as we're staying off the rails to follow a module or something. But when you start going into the history and the, you know, the world and stuff that these guys do, it's crazy.
00:09:25
Speaker
Okay. Dex was going to tell us what he did before we get to Dex. No, don't care. Beric, probably a week after you send your letter. Also, I think, and Beric, I presume would know this having been sort of at court. Am I wrong? The Brelish consulate in Stormreach is run by Rookin's sister or a close relative of his? Yeah, his sister. So I figured it'd be fairly easy to find someone associated with the Sharn inquisitive and just drop it.
00:09:52
Speaker
Yeah. So

Booyah's New Abilities

00:09:54
Speaker
yeah, a few days after you drop that letter, they print it on the front page and the already rising tensions in the Brielish district of Stormreach have risen even more with kind of battle lines being drawn even in this
00:10:16
Speaker
this district of a city that is not in Corvair. So the tensions starting to bleed over from Greenland. Dex, what did you do with your two weeks?
00:10:27
Speaker
Okay, so Dex, taking advantage of the fact that he can look however he wants and now does not look anything like the Dex in the photograph, goes basically to the Brielish area of Stormreach and just starts asking questions, asking about what's going on at home, questions about the power takeover.
00:10:51
Speaker
Questions about, like, hey, never find those three kidnappers? Like, or, you know, what's the what's the word on those guys? Just to kind of see what the. How big is how big of a story that is now that this other thing has happened? Probably at that point that one of them says, well, one of them put this letter in the paper. Yeah, fair enough. That's how you find out. Yeah, he is keeping an eye out for the fella that had the edict on the road. Not sure what he'll do when he sees him. He may kill him.
00:11:21
Speaker
Oh, wow. Yeah. We have gotten dark.
00:11:26
Speaker
And he does, at one point during those two weeks, make a visit to the Black Dog. He's still not sold on the thing, but he can't pass up the idea of it. He wants to believe that they're telling the truth, that he can control it when he doesn't turn, or when he turns on voluntarily and blah, blah, blah. So he goes to learn more, check it out, talk more with Sigur if Sigur is there.
00:11:55
Speaker
So that's what he is. So you're just through talking with him. You haven't made a commitment or anything, but he's begun through conversations, teaching you their ways and kind of giving you homework is too formal. Just if you want to see the kind of power we can tap into, here are some exercises you can do. And they're very meditative. They're very internal. It's all about introspection and kind of becoming comfortable and aware of
00:12:27
Speaker
your place within the natural order. Obviously, do you transform back into Lyle to talk to Sigur? No, I don't think so. Because you transformed after the Lycanthrope conversation. Right. But I think that I just by going and talking, I answer some questions only Dex could answer kind of thing. Okay. Besides, he has his tracker thing. He knows it's me.
00:12:51
Speaker
Right. You're not a lycanthrope anymore. They use natural tracking. That's right. Anyway, I proved that I am who I am. Maybe I change into Lyle, but in front of him. But no, I'm not risking being in public as Lyle at any point. What's your new name?
00:13:07
Speaker
I don't know. I need to figure that out. Yeah. Do me a generator here. I was told I can't be a chipopotamus. So that is accurate. You cannot be. You don't control me.

Character Updates

00:13:25
Speaker
So yeah, you you do some of these exercises and you begin to become
00:13:32
Speaker
more comfortable with not the animalistic sounds like you're not tapping into any sort of feral rage, but you're just acknowledging your oneness with the world around you and the natural order of things. And that's starting to yield some positive results. When you're walking on the outskirts of Stormreach near where the jungle is kind of starting to encroach on the city, you begin to kind of feel your senses heighten.
00:13:58
Speaker
You you become aware of the animals in the trees and any animals that are encroaching near storm reach. So, yeah, you're beginning to become one with nature kind of thing, real granola kind of stuff. Sure. Cool. His his name is Helico Pater. OK. And Booyah.
00:14:22
Speaker
Booyah being in a place entirely new Huge surroundings would do some exploring Not trying to stick out like a sore thumb, you know, which is one reason he bought the cloak last time Just visiting places, you know just taking taking things in
00:14:42
Speaker
And, of course, he would have spent some time reading his book that he is enamored with, the stories in it, and has probably annoyed Berwick and Dex with telling some of the stories, that they're tired of hearing them. And he's also been tinkering with the stone that we acquired from Selveran. Sevilrin.
00:15:12
Speaker
And probably towards the end of the two weeks when all three are back aboard the ship, Booyah comes and to both of them and his chest is just
00:15:29
Speaker
puffed out, he'd just tell that he's trying hard to conceal his excitement, but he's exceedingly proud of himself as well. And he wants both of you come, come on, come deck. Booyah, show something. Come, come. So I assume you guys are coming on the deck to see what Booyah's hyped up about. What kind of day is it?
00:15:55
Speaker
Um, probably Booyah would probably want to do it about dusk. Okay. And this, this is the end. We're at the end of the two weeks now when Booyah is showing you all this. So all of your stuff has already happened. Okay. So you get up on deck and on one side of the ship.
00:16:15
Speaker
Gerald's a pile of dead bodies. Gerald's at one end and close to the bow and hanging off the side of the ship, like out over the water, you see a wooden target with a bullseye on it. Okay. And we gotta say, watch, watch, watch this. And he pulls plainer justice. For our audio listeners right now, Philip has a very skeptical look over the rim of his glasses.
00:16:43
Speaker
Jeff doesn't have the look but he's feeling the feeling and Booyah looks down at Gerald gives him a big grin and a big thumbs up and Gerald smiling and grinning back and gives his thumbs up two thumbs up and Booyah points plainer justice at the target
00:17:01
Speaker
loads a crossbow bolt and fires his hand crossbow at target. And about halfway to the target, you see the arrow change into a lightning bolt as it smacks into the target. And Booyah says, see, what do you think that? Booyah, he placed on fixed stone. And then he takes out of his pouch his stone.
00:17:29
Speaker
and he puts his stone back in his pouch and he breaks open planar justice and shows you inside is the other stone. My stone. That if you look closely at it, you can see it looks like a storm swirling inside clouds, very stormy looking. And Booyah says, he fixed stone. Gerald help. Gerald get a little hurt, but he okay now. And it worked now.
00:17:59
Speaker
No fool around with. Booyah take out, but take time. Don't go fast. Booyah went too fast one time. Kind of get all Gerald's power. But Gerald, we figure out how Gerald get back. So it take time to take in and out. But only work if in something. No work by self. Have not figured out how make work by self.
00:18:28
Speaker
Take Booyah about two hours, take out, and put in something else. And he looks at that.
00:18:37
Speaker
So essentially what Booyah has wrought is he convinced Gerald to hold the stone and concentrate on it. And the first few times it actually like downgraded Gerald's dragon mark, but they were able to kind of work out a way where Gerald was able to imbue the stone with the power of the storm.
00:19:01
Speaker
And so if, if, I mean, Booyah is going to continue to use planar justice as he has for now. Yes. But you do have this now powered stone at your disposal that Booyah can swap the stone out of either the ribbon weave or the amulet if you wish. But go ahead. No good.

Meeting with Lassite

00:19:23
Speaker
But
00:19:25
Speaker
Um, there's no, like Booyah's crossbow bolt turned into lightning halfway. They're just like your dragon stones are the same in your amulet and your ribbon weave. Um, but they have different abilities because of the vessel. And so there's no.
00:19:48
Speaker
your ribbon weave isn't going to like turn into a bolt of lightning as you swing it. Oh, I think it is. So that's also part of the thing is you don't really know what it's going to do until it's in the vessel. Well, here's my thing. Don't we very specifically need the power of the silver flame?
00:20:15
Speaker
That is how it was expressed to us, but okay, but his name is vern vern What do you mean vern or know what I mean vern? But like booyah, did you really think I was gonna choose one of the high fantasy names when vern was on the list? I just generated names for you. That's all I appreciate it
00:20:34
Speaker
Um, but like Booyock explained, Gerald was able to withdraw the power back out of it. So it's not like it's a permanent thing. So no one's going to believe you're an elf. Risky to take intake out. Have to take time. Can try quick, but chance. Bad thing may happen. Take, take time is okay.
00:21:01
Speaker
So what you can elucidate from Booyah's words into mechanics, it takes two hours to swap stones. It takes two towers for Booyah to swap stones safely. You can do it, Booyah can do it in an hour.
00:21:23
Speaker
and there is a 25% chance that some form of backfire will happen if you try to use the vessel. Any of you can swap out the stones using an action, but then there is a 50% chance that there will be some form of backfire. So, I mean, essentially you have a pretty powerful lightning weapon, but if you have that in and come across something that you need to deal radiant damage to, you can,
00:21:52
Speaker
swap damage types but on the fly it's going to potentially cause some problems. So how does that work for the amulet that doesn't do damage it just heals? I mean there are it would it would take on new properties. Oh sure. Yeah that's the thing is like all of the abilities you get with your ribbon weave like daylight, resistance to necrotic, that stuff is pinged off of the stone. Gotcha. And so like when Booyah
00:22:21
Speaker
And the backfire happened and lightning just kind of exploded out of plainer justice. He didn't take as much damage as he should have because his body was resistant to lightning damage. So that's, that's a property that he kind of discovered what happened when in plainer justice. So, gotcha. So yeah. Um, that's what you all have been up to for the past two weeks. Um, and Booyah will take the time to swap stones back out. Also, um, crashed.
00:22:50
Speaker
Oh yeah. When you returned from, uh, going to try and contact Varen at the end of the last session, Gerald told you that Crass left. He went into the city and he has not been seen for two weeks. Um, and Gerald said he didn't seem great. So, um, yeah.
00:23:16
Speaker
So the so since we did it at dusk and you're going to take a couple hours, it's going to be firmly nighttime. So if you would like to do anything other than sleep, we're going to cut to the next morning. That's fine. Eric probably goes down and continues to work on the walls of madness in his room. OK. Yeah. Have we seen your murder board? Probably not. I don't know. You're going back through. Eric's gone most of the day. I would only go in your room if you were. I'm sure Booyah has seen it.
00:23:43
Speaker
I think Dex would only go in bearish room if Barrick was there and asked to come in. So would Barrick allow him in? I mean, yeah, probably. OK, just setting the table. So that next morning, anybody go up on deck in the morning, you're working on your murder board. I mean, no, Barrick would be like by the time it's dawn, Barrick could be on his way out. OK. Oh, yeah.

Journey to Lassite's Estate

00:24:10
Speaker
I think that Dex
00:24:13
Speaker
every morning goes up because this whole deal is checking to see what Brie-lish thing has come in overnight. You said there's not a special insignia for government versus trading vessels, right? Like they've all got the bear on them if they're Brie-lish.
00:24:30
Speaker
Um, well, I mean, if, if they were really ships would have, you could tell by the type of ship, whether or not it was trading vessel, but sure. Uh, or if it was laden with things might be like a Royal Royal banner, Royal family, some kind of sometimes have like their own banner. Yeah. Yeah. Kings business or something.
00:24:50
Speaker
Yeah, I mean I would imagine like the King Citadel. Yeah I mean there are these weird ships with no markings But just cuz he knows if they're if a new ship that looks official has come in he's gonna be on his grind that day like really trying to find out who it is and what's going on one
00:25:15
Speaker
you don't notice any any ships with royal insignia you you have noticed over the past two weeks they're just like with your brother coming through town you do see reedron ships coming through on a pretty regular basis loading stuff up doing rigging stuff taken off i have a question that might be relevant um
00:25:33
Speaker
and this is, I want to know whether your version of Stormreach features this also. In the version of Stormreach we played with out of the Keith Baker book, there is in fact a rear-drained embassy in Stormreach. And we haven't had any reason to go there. But no, that's why you see reagent ships is because there is a relationship between Stormreach and the reagents.
00:26:00
Speaker
Um, so Booyah, are you staying on the ship working with Gerald? Yeah, he's probably, I figured over the past couple of weeks formed a bit of a camaraderie with Gerald. So.
00:26:12
Speaker
Okay, important question. Have you all shared your daily schedules with each other? Where you go, kind of what you do? I assume that by the time that Barak had been gone all day for a couple days, people probably asked where he had been, and he probably tells them that he's been doing sword lessons with Benar in the morning, then he goes to church, then he goes sword lessons with Paolo, and then in the evening comes back.
00:26:39
Speaker
Okay. Dex has definitely told them about his realish inquisitiveness and not the black dog. Okay, sure. You've noticed
00:26:52
Speaker
You've noticed the tension rising in the British district. The questions that you're asking are getting shorter and more curt responses. It looks like a district about to boil over. And most of the people in the British district are expatriates. They're not people who are. They're not just the traders and that's where they hover. People who have left and gone to storm reach for some reason for the length of time.
00:27:13
Speaker
A lot of war vets, a lot of people that are either too disenfranchised with the monarchy or too angry about the legislation and wish that it was a pure monarchy. I mean, it's a pretty wide berth of people. Sure. Yeah. Okay. Well, about mid-morning, Booyah, you're on the deck with Gerald.
00:27:34
Speaker
talking about God knows what. And you hear a voice from down below borrowed time of somebody calling up to you. He's calling Gerald's name specifically. Captain, Captain Gerald. Does anybody hear? Do I recognize the voice? No.
00:28:05
Speaker
Okay, is Gerald going to investigate? Oh, actually, yes, you do. It's the head of the household that turned you away at Varen's house when you went with them to try and talk to the Storm Lord. Okay, so if Gerald's going to heed the call, then... Yeah, Gerald starts to walk over to the internship. Okay, Booyah would follow. Oh, hello. It's me, Charlie.
00:28:36
Speaker
Are your compatriots here? Why you want to know? Well, Lord Lassite has returned and he's requested that you all come to his estate to meet with him. Oh, okay. They know here right now. Where are they? Lord Lassite was, he sent me personally to collect you all. It's time sensitive.
00:29:02
Speaker
Oh boy. That Booyah think. Can you at least think on your walk down here so I'm not shouting? Is there anybody else with him or is he by

Lassite's Proposal

00:29:17
Speaker
himself? He's by himself. Okay, yeah Booyah will walk down to him.
00:29:22
Speaker
And is Booyah aware of where he would be trained? Berwick would be training. Well, it's about mid morning, so he'd probably be at church. He'd probably be at church at that time, yes. So he would probably explain that, you know, Berwick at church. Which church? The flame, the silver one. Okay. And what about Lyle?
00:29:53
Speaker
Booyan not really sure where he could be just walk around Stormreach. And any particular place in Stormreach that he might be?
00:30:07
Speaker
He hasn't really, Dex hadn't really said to us any particular. He said he's been in the Breelish district. Yeah, no, I told you guys that I've been. Yeah, I'm told you've been at the Black Dog or anything like that, just in the Breelish district. Yeah. Okay. And the Black Dog thing, I mean, I don't know, you tell me, I don't have to go there every day and I've spent hours there. I've really probably been there a couple of times. Okay. So. And Dex, he probably in Breelish district wandering around.
00:30:30
Speaker
Oh, okay. Well, if you'll come with me, we need to collect your compatriots and return to Lord Lassite's estate. We had the opportunity to explain the change in M2.
00:30:45
Speaker
Who do we introduce you as last night to as like when you were last night when we met last night? Oh, I look like Lyle but but were you Lyle or were you like when we introduced you but they knew I was Dex Okay, I couldn't remember with how we introduced. Yeah, they knew my name. Okay. I don't know that they knew I was a changeling but they knew my real name So they're all about to find out didn't assume it was a problem. I just didn't know your real name Remember we got off the ship and he was like he said Lyle
00:31:07
Speaker
Booy. If only I ever listened to the episode. Well, whatever. He's about to find out that I'm a changeling because I'm going to walk in there with my, my new look. So Booyah says, okay, we, we, we go Briely's district first. Beric, he's serious about church. We give him time. No, no interrupt.
00:31:26
Speaker
Oh, okay. Well, let's, let's go. Gerald's like, Booyah, I'm going to stay on the ship because I don't want to go with this guy. I don't like leaving the ship over. You probably were very inquisitive towards Gerald about like his markings and his power. Yeah. And he did his best to explain to you to somebody with zero context of what a dragon marked house is.
00:31:53
Speaker
that his family, if they found out he's the way he is now, would basically make him a prisoner that they would parade around. So Gerald, I mean, he's called to people down in the harbor district to go buy supplies for the ship and stuff when he's needed to get like Gerald does not leave the ship. OK, so beyond understands that and just gives him the gives him the booyah thumbs up.
00:32:20
Speaker
Gerald gives you the double Gerald thumbs up. And... It's as good as four thumbs from a mortal man. So, thanks to the fact that Charlie knows his way around Stormreach really well, you all find the Breelish district without much trouble. I need both of you to give me perception checks. Am I in a natural setting? No, you're in a city. 24.
00:32:49
Speaker
Thirteen. What do you see, boo? Booyah, you spot. It takes you a second because he's he's changed forms fairly recently, but you spot this kind of purple, twin skin elf with what color do we say your hair was in some shade of blue, some shade of blue with blue hair. I mean, very I mean, elves that look like this aren't super common. It's not like he's the only one. But but you spot Dex's new form in the crowd.
00:33:18
Speaker
Oh, question, do elves keep short hair or do they always grow it out? Like how dwarves always have beards, guys. It's however you want it, man. We're going short. We're going short crop on that hair because purple and blue, it's not the best match. You could have made it any color you wanted. I could have. But it's canon now.
00:33:41
Speaker
You still can. It looks great. Right now, it could change colors. Yeah, I can do what I want. Hey, I'm a dwarf. What up? Did you maintain your new elf form when you all went to last night's house to inquire about him?
00:33:56
Speaker
Yeah, here's I changed into that elf after we had the conversation with the lycanthropes and I have and I have not been in public as anything else Or I've not been in public as a Lyle since then I may kick around as different other thing though during those two weeks I may have tried out other yeah other looks but I have been not been Lyle since we finished that fight, okay? Okay, Lyle is dead
00:34:22
Speaker
Okay, so Booyah says, oh, Booyah Si, follow Booyah right over here. And Charlie vaguely recognizes the elf as being somebody that came to inquire about Lord Lassite. I mean, really, the only reason that he was so willing to communicate with Lord Lassite on your behalf is presumably, I mean, would you have told him that you were Beric Rowan coming to call for Varen Lassite?
00:34:52
Speaker
Probably okay, so that I mean because he wouldn't have recognized Dex right and you're a new entity So he's like oh well, but let's let's go fetching and now we need to wait for Jeff You couldn't have gone for Barrett first
00:35:09
Speaker
Hey, we've got to give time. You're good. So so where were we? They are approaching you in the streets of Stormreach. So you recognize Charlie, the head of the household at last site, the state. And he has seen me as this. Yes. And what I was explaining to them is it's really only the fact that Berwick introduced himself to the head of household as Berwick Rowan, that you all had any weight with the household.
00:35:39
Speaker
So, um, you see Booyah and this man that you've met one time approaching you on the streets in the Breelish district. This Charlie Charlie say we invite to place to meet last night.
00:35:53
Speaker
Lord Lassite has returned from his trip and he's sent me out to fetch you. Oh, yeah, great. Well, I don't think we should do anything without all of us being there. Yeah, we go get Eric. Okay, church. Yeah, probably. Yeah.
00:36:14
Speaker
Yeah. All right. I mean, I mean, last night seems like a righteous kind of fella. We're not like righteous like Barry, but you know, like good guy. All right. Is that a word you picked up from Jared from Gerald? Right. Yeah, absolutely. He seems like a real tubular dude.
00:36:30
Speaker
Well, um, we, we need to, luckily the, um, the thronest districts isn't, isn't too far, but, um, come, come. And Charlie begins turn. He turns around and begins headed the other direction. Um, Barrick, you are. Just, just to be, just to be amusing. Can, can we, can we say that church has ended while they're doing this? And by the time they get there, I've actually headed over to where the stormlords already live to seconds for lesson of the day. So they meet you on the church and I'm not there.
00:37:00
Speaker
Okay, well, you all arrive at the Church of the Silver Flame in Barracks, not there. It's too late. Service is over. Um, I... He pray fast today.
00:37:10
Speaker
Well, when where would he be next? He trained sword. We know that, right? But we don't do an aware. Yeah. Well, you know who. Yeah. He's training with that lady whose name I've forgotten. That's the evening one's right. It was called Paolo Marlow. Paolo Marlow. We got to watch back and make sure he no romance.
00:37:33
Speaker
Booyah have memory from ancient time about something. Wonderful. He's probably heading that way, which was, you know, good for us because that's closer to your boss. Walking to birth space. I would hate to interrupt him. And so we're absolutely going to interrupt him. We're taking him away from his plans. Give me perception checks all around.
00:38:03
Speaker
That's a 30. 11. Natural 20. 23.

Mission Details

00:38:08
Speaker
Okay. Do I get to do something for my 20? Yeah. What would you like to introduce? I would like to introduce the fact that Barrick is not a butthole when we tell him he can't go to his training and he has to go to last site. That's not how it works. I know. No, that was all set up for a joke. I don't have anything to introduce.
00:38:28
Speaker
I did get a 20. That's true. But I appreciate you spending a 20 just on that joke. I don't know what I would add. I mean, it's a perception check because we're walking to get fair. Well, it doesn't have to relate to the check. Oh, OK.
00:38:44
Speaker
You guys got anything? Find a nice taco stand on the way. The tacos had to make sense. You know, he's a little guy who can't see very well and he's trying to find Barrick and obviously not being successful. He tries to climb up on top of deck so he can get a better look.
00:39:01
Speaker
Is that what you want to introduce in the narrative because of his 20 is that he gives you a piggyback ride? Not even a little bit. Let's have a vision of Calvin and Hobbs just right. And I just see Dex just, what are you doing? I've had a much more Yoda image in my head. Okay. Well, if there's nothing we would like to introduce. No, no, I just see real good. Let's just move on. Other than the taco stand. I put an end to that.
00:39:24
Speaker
Like the taco stand is good. Okay tacos and is good. You smell delicious tacos No, we eat delicious have some street tacos on the way I am NOT wasting a 20 on smelling a taco Plus you get to make this fancy butler wait while you order street tacos Sounds like something Dex would enjoy. Could you could you hang on for a second?
00:39:42
Speaker
I got a hankering for some Tex-Mex. Some what-what? That's our learning food. It's very popular where my accent is wrong.
00:39:57
Speaker
Oh, yeah, fun. Okay, so. So since they stopped for street. So after you, as you all are walking and eating your delicious street tacos, you spot Berwick.
00:40:13
Speaker
coming around a corner. It's clear that you all took different paths to get here. And Barak, as soon as you're around this corner, you can hear the very distinct voice and cadence and diction of Booyah relaying one of the stories from his book to Charlie, the head of the household of Lord Lassai.
00:40:35
Speaker
And you also just hear crunch crunch crunch really good crunch crunch crunch crunch They don't overdo the onions Man I'm so glad this didn't have cilantro on it. That's crap tastes like soap and I hate it Anyway, it's genetics man
00:40:56
Speaker
I think Barrick probably continues walking towards his appointment. Okay. Well, you have spotted Barrick. Hey, Barrick, come here. Barrick, turn around. Barrick, hey, come on. And then I start to run to catch up.
00:41:12
Speaker
Yes. Listen, I know you got your lesson, but last side's back and he wants to meet with us. Apparently it's urgent enough that he sent his guy, I know Charlie's name, right? Yeah, you know Charlie. It's urgent enough that he sent Charlie all over storm reach to find the three of us. Hello.
00:41:28
Speaker
What does Chuck say it's about? Oh, Chuck. He I'm not even sure that he knows fully what it's about. He just knows that last night needs to talk to us or desperately wants to talk to us. And we've been waiting on him anyway. Can you take one night off or reschedule or something? It's the way I'm going anyway. Appreciate it.
00:41:50
Speaker
All right, so, um, do you all want to ask anything of Charlie while you walk? Um, just the storm Lord want Chuck. It's Charlie. Um, he, he, one thing to learn about Barak is he's very informal.
00:42:08
Speaker
He didn't tell me precisely what he wanted to speak to you about. I obviously sent him the missive that you all wish to meet with him, and he said he would return as soon as he could, and as soon as he arrived back, obviously Prince Orgev and Barash have been staying in his estate, so they were able to
00:42:29
Speaker
gain his ear as soon as he arrived. But, um, before he took their meeting, Lord Lassite requested that I come and retrieve you all immediately, um, for some, uh, important discussions regarding, uh, his trip. But that's all, all he told me. Where did he go? Uh, he, um. On his storm Lord business. Give me, give me some type of social check to get Charlie to tell you this. 18, 18 persuasion, persuasion.
00:43:01
Speaker
Charlie really kind of has the sense that he's only got you all on a very thin thread. And so he wants to make sure that he actually does his job and gets you there. So, well, he's been a British court. That does seem relevant to our interests.
00:43:16
Speaker
King Boerneld requested an audience with these Stormlords, but they decided that Lord Lassite should go alone to hear what the King wishes. Who else is going to be at this meeting, Chuck? Just Lord Lassite. He was very clear. I'm not allowed at the meeting. Orgev and Barash will be dismissed before he meets with you all.
00:43:42
Speaker
Who else is staying at the Storm Lord's estate, Chuck? Just Prince Orgev and Barashia. Obviously Lord Lasset has been gone for the past two weeks and so he hasn't been able to take in new guests. I allowed Orgev and Barashia to stay there simply because they were already guests of the Lord. No one else came back on his ship besides him? He did not return via ship. He was... I feel like that's an odd place to stop your statement. Yeah.
00:44:11
Speaker
He was very urgent to return and speak with you after his time at British court. So he he paid for an orient teleportation circle. I am wary, but this is to this is. And of course, but just since we were right there, Charlie leans into you're going to want to walk away.
00:44:37
Speaker
Wait, let me rephrase that. I want you to walk away. I'm I'm wary of this But if it is on the up and up we can't pass up whatever he has to tell us and if it's not I still stayed a good chance of learning something You almost do an insight check to see what kind of a feeling he's getting from this guy. I actually want to do the same 17
00:45:08
Speaker
Booyah, you get the sense just kind of you glance over your shoulder at Charlie as he's waiting for you all to finish up your private discussion. He is all nerves. Like he's just kind of he's looking around at the people on the street of storm reach. Like he's, he's nervous. Yeah, tells you guys, I don't know about Charlie, Charlie, awfully nervous. I don't know you notice.
00:45:37
Speaker
He seems perfectly fine to you, Dex. Seems like a real chill dude. He's got that taco vibe. He keeps looking round. Feeling good about this meeting. We're in your cloak. Oh yeah, that is also true. I've spoken my piece on it. I think there's no good reason for us not to go... I mean, the odds that... Well, no, I'm not gonna say that because anything can happen. Well.
00:46:08
Speaker
Before we go see Lord Lassite, I need to stop and tell Paolo why I'm not coming. Yeah, I mean, sure. Is Charlie a part of this conversation now or no? OK. Booyah walks up to Charlie and pokes him in his tummy. Why are you so nervous? Why are you worried about? Excuse me, I'm. Normally, Lord Lassite does not send me out on
00:46:38
Speaker
missions in, in the streets of storm reach. I, I tend to stick to the estate and run things there. So, um, I, I just, I'm, I'm a little shaky being out, out here, especially with tensions being what they are. Another insight check. 12. I feel like he's telling the truth. Um,
00:47:07
Speaker
Barrick and I are still separate. I mean, we're going, right? I suppose. All right. Hey, Charlie. Can we make a quick detour so Barrick can tell his tutor, mentor, sensei? They'll kind of live in the same area, right? Yeah. Have their estates kind of nearby. It'd still be a detour to go to her. Sure. So he can say why he's not going to be his lesson day. Let me rephrase. We're going to make a detour. Yes, of course. Very well.
00:47:35
Speaker
And we detour and we return to the path and we get to the best stops, drops his bag off with his kit for fencing. And. Tells Lady Omar and where we're going. OK. A smart move. Give me an insight check.
00:48:08
Speaker
16.

Ethical Debate

00:48:11
Speaker
You get the sense that she knew what you were going to tell her before you did. Like, there's no sense of disappointment surprise. It's just kind of a knowing. Very well. All right, I could mean anything.
00:48:29
Speaker
So, okay. Um, Charlie escorts you in through the front doors of, uh, the last set of state, which you have been to before. Um, except for Booyah. It's a very, very big house. Um, with lots and lots of room.
00:48:46
Speaker
And he escorts you upstairs into a back office area. He says, gentlemen, if you'd be so kind as to wait here, I'm going to go and announce your arrival to Lord Lastside. I believe he's still meeting with Prince Orgev and and Brasha. And Charlie disappears behind the door. Do you all just sit and wait?
00:49:12
Speaker
But y'all looks around these are driving through his yeah, you know if he sees something on a desk or something that he can Be curious about and fiddle with he's gonna pick it up and check it out you see a
00:49:25
Speaker
fairly small console table up against one of the walls that has some pre-cut sheets of parchment next to it with a quill and some ink and what looks like a wood basket, essentially, next to the pile of papers. There's also a decorative vase with some beautiful looking flowers from the Zendrick jungle that you recognize from
00:49:47
Speaker
just your time living there, and a large painted portrait over this console table of somebody that you don't recognize. And they're writing on this parchment? No, they're blank. They're blank pieces of parchment. Okay, I was gonna smell the flowers. They smell like home.
00:50:10
Speaker
Dex is, and I imagine Beric as well. Tell me if I'm wrong, just kind of head on a swivel. Yeah, just waiting. The door opens and you see Orgevin Barascha exit and look to you all and nod and say, gentlemen.
00:50:26
Speaker
It's been a pleasure traveling with you. I'm leaving the city, so I don't imagine we'll see each other for some time. But thank you for everything you did. And if you need me, then feel free to do what you can to reach out. All right, safe travels. OK.
00:51:03
Speaker
You see Lord Lassite behind his large ornate desk, and you see a similar setup as you saw on the console table out in the hallway with some sheets of parchment and quill. And Lord Lassite is finishing writing something, and he looks up and says, oh, good, Yohia. And he drops it in the wood basket, and you see it just disappear in a puff of smoke.
00:51:08
Speaker
I hope your trip back is less eventful than your trip here.
00:51:26
Speaker
Can I do a quick investigation to see if

Episode Conclusion

00:51:29
Speaker
there's anything that looks like I don't know people hiding in cabinets or something I just like sure literally I want to make sure I want to see if there's anything that would portend that we are not alone okay with the just the four five of us is Charlie in there with us no Charlie okay shut the door behind
00:51:48
Speaker
We'll never know. Eighteen. We will. We'll find out. You don't spot anything. OK. Berwick, it's good to see you again. Who are your companions? Right. It's me.
00:52:10
Speaker
Here's something you didn't know about me. I'm a changeling and being wanted. I figured it was best to move. Oh, Lyle. Right. Sorry. That's me, Lyle. And that's Booyah. Booyah Gregor, you call Booyah.
00:52:26
Speaker
Okay, I I've heard about Booyah from Orgevan Barasha. They we spoke about their harrowing journey through the jungle before you all met up with them. And they were more tight-lipped than I would have liked. But anyway, that's neither here nor there. I have just returned to the city from time in Brielish court.
00:52:57
Speaker
It was awful. I would rather play a game of riddles with a mind flayer than go back there. But the Stormlords are about to meet fairly soon and it's regarding you all. And I've petitioned for you all to be able to be there.
00:53:19
Speaker
Um, if, if we can do kind of a walk and talk, um, towards our meeting place, uh, I, I promise to be forthright, answer all your questions. Uh, but, uh, time is kind of of the essence in this situation. I'll, I'll explain everything on the way. And if you want to leave at any point, feel free. I mean, I like Aaron Sorkin as much as the neck guy, but this seems awfully rushed, but also
00:53:49
Speaker
if they're talking about us. I just will be there. I'd like to be there. All right. And last night throws on his his over court over coat and begins to walk out the door and as you all are walking down the stairs and you see Charlie staying in the house.
00:54:09
Speaker
You walk out the front door, he's like, okay, so I was, we were all petitioned by the King of Breeland to come meet with him about the events in Breeland over the past few months. And long story short, guys, he wants you back real bad.
00:54:29
Speaker
He demanded extradition and we obviously don't extradite people. We have exiled a couple people but that's only for killing a Stormlord unless they're also a Stormlord. It's complicated. We're basically meeting to discuss what, as the Council of Stormlords, we intend to do.
00:54:51
Speaker
I've already spoken to Stormlord Omeran and she is ardently against extradition. I am as well. We've never entertained the idea, but some of the Stormlords are calling for a meeting. So, yeah, it's bad. And he's kind of going through the running corners. He's clearly walking with a purpose, knows exactly where he's going.
00:55:19
Speaker
And in this kind of scenario with a walk and talk, feel free to interject and ask questions and things like that, just as he's talking. Orgev told me about the fact that Theradek wasn't with you all anymore. I apologize about that.
00:55:35
Speaker
So really, it comes down to you two and what to do next. Normally, we would just tell the king or queen of any sovereign nation from Corvair to shove their extradition edicts where you can imagine we would tell them to shove it. It's probably in some sort of filing cabinet. Yeah.
00:55:59
Speaker
You know those messenger scroll tubes? Yeah, you're like at the bank. Yeah. Um, Bornell is making threats now. Um, fortunately, he's tied up right now with closing off the Brielish borders, trying to deal with the Sons of Liberty, Storm, Swords of Liberty. And he has some contingencies of his army trying to regain land in Drowam. So we do have some time before he could gather any force great enough to do anything.
00:56:28
Speaker
But he is making threats. And so we're having to approach this with a new angle, I guess, for lack of a better term. Stops and kind of looks around and then points down an alleyway and it's like this way. So anything you all want to... How many storm wars are there? Five. And we know two are for sure against extradition. Yeah. Do you get a sense about the other three?
00:56:51
Speaker
In the decades, generations that the Stormlords have been ruling over Stormreach, nobody, nobody has ever been extradited, period. Right, but how many of those times has there been a direct threat from a king of a nation? A couple. Oh, wow. I mean- Yeah, it's getting to some things down here. We do harbor the best of the best and the worst of the worst. So that's what concerns me about this meeting is we've never entertained the idea. It's just been a foregone conclusion. Now granted,
00:57:20
Speaker
With this particular Council of Stormlords, we've never had this situation. Just historically, there have been times back when the five nations were one nation. Sure. Their king would demand a criminal be sent back. But nothing, nothing ever came to the threats. But my time in Brielish court, it's concerning. And he approaches a door in this alleyway and kind of stops and looks down both sides of the alleyway. And if you all have any last questions about this particular line of thinking, now would be the time.
00:57:49
Speaker
How's his demeanor right now? Does he seem calm? Very with a purpose. Like he is kind of laser focused right now. You don't have any other questions. Yeah, I'm ready. I'm ready to go in and OK. Chips fall and whatnot. So he opens the door into this seems like a really ratty kind of general store storefront. And as he walks in, the the gentleman behind the counter kind of perks up and oh.
00:58:16
Speaker
Lord Lord last site. He's like, hey, how you doing Tico? And he just tosses him a silver piece and Tico catches it and is like, thank you, sir. And he begins to walk into the back room of this store. As you all follow him, he kind of holds the door open for you all and gestures you to walk past him. Oh, sure. You don't have to. I mean, we're pretty bot committed at this point.
00:58:40
Speaker
you all into the room and it's an empty storage room with a single structure covered by a cloth. As he shuts the doors like confession time, there is no meeting with the storm lords. The swords out. Okay.
00:58:56
Speaker
That's because there's way too many ways to magically invade somebody's privacy unless you have warding against it. This room is warded against that. Nobody can hear us, see us, anything. Because I have a job for you. All the things I told you about Borneo are absolutely true.
00:59:15
Speaker
But the Stormlords have been in constant communication since I got the news and almost all of them are against extradition. I mean, the foundation of trust of this conversation has been a bit tarnished. Well, forgive me. I didn't want to risk your life and my life by speaking about this out in the open in my office where people know that I'm going to talk about things like this.
00:59:40
Speaker
And if I told you, hey, follow me to this empty storage room, I doubt you would have come with me because we've met one time. And hey, we need to have a private conversation. I just wanted to do here, but I've got a magically warded room. Then they would have heard that and followed us to the magically warded room. And we know who they are and we'd have killed them by now. If you could kill them. I mean, not to toot my own horn. I will toot the horns of my compatriots.
01:00:08
Speaker
You know, I don't like that expression. They're very diverse. I retract everything. They're very strong. Listen, I know that this was a really shady way to get you here. I apologize. But nobody knows that we are here now. Nobody followed us. Nobody had any reason to follow us. And now we can talk frankly. I'm going to walk toward the thing that's covered.
01:00:32
Speaker
Okay, it's covered in a blanket. Yeah, I'm gonna say, hey, what's under here? And put a hand on the blanket, like grab the blanket. It's probably nothing that you would know anything about. It's an obelisk of some kind. And he reaches over and grabs the blanket, grabs your hand very tenderly. Or goes to the pot at the real moment. You can yank with him if you want and you pull the blanket down. Yeah, we do it together, like unveiling a car.
01:00:59
Speaker
A new car! Beric, this looks like a stone obelisk with some weird markings on it. It's nothing. You too.
01:01:07
Speaker
You immediately recognize it from your childhood slash young adult life as being a tool of the inspired. Getting into some quarry stuff. Basically, this is what cost you your family. One of these devices that intensifies nightmares and especially with direct contact with it. If you were to touch it, it basically blasts your mind. In that case, as soon as I pulled the blanket off, I am on the other side of the room.
01:01:36
Speaker
Booyah, you recognize this thing, not in the same context. You've spotted these things around the jungle. And all you know is whenever you all would make camp near one of these things, crazy nightmares, like just horrible. And occasionally when your brethren would touch it, they would either die or no longer be them. They would kind of go crazy.
01:01:59
Speaker
So your people, actually, through your helping, figured out with the runes that are written around the bottom, you figured out a technique, your people, how and how to destroy the runes with carvings basically at certain angles. It's very risky, very dangerous. But you your people figure out how to disable these things to protect your people. And you would know that it's been disabled. You can see the markings. OK, so knowing the kind of person that Varen is, I turn to say, so how many people you tortured by locking them in here with this thing?
01:02:28
Speaker
No, no, it's OK. Is is is not active. As soon as Dex jumps back, Beric immediately drags his hand down the edge of his sword blade and it catches fire. Well, guys, guys, guys, listen. We found one of these things.
01:02:46
Speaker
in storm reach in the Brielish district. And we, we have some people come in and disable it because some scholars that I know said that these things are dangerous. Whoever constructed these things in the Zendrick jungle, we believe are responsible for the downfall of the giant empire. I mean, the, the history is really sketchy. Obviously there's not a whole lot of writings on it, but just the timing works out. Here's the thing. There was one storm Lord.
01:03:14
Speaker
that has expressed wanting to extradite you. He said, send them back, they're not our problem. Nobody, nobody who has called them still to Stormlord, including this one, has ever said anything like that. So, my job for you, if you want to take it,
01:03:35
Speaker
is to break in to York Amontu's manor, and either in his basement or his bedroom, because those are the two places I've never been allowed to go into, discover if one of these things is residing. And for that job, I will pay you each a thousand gold pieces.
01:03:56
Speaker
Man, can you- I hate work. Can you imagine the baths we could get with that kind of money? Can you imagine making money for adventuring? I know, right? And then... I don't know about this though, because that guy's cousin killed a dragon. He did! Let's go callback!
01:04:12
Speaker
sorry and then really interesting though if you do discover that this is here and you're able to disable it ideally disable it i mean i don't know how to disable this thing yeah i can teach you what yeah i know how it's it's not easy but of course yes can i if you do discover one of these things in yorka montu's
01:04:35
Speaker
I am prepared to pay you an additional 30,000 gold pieces to kill your Kamantu. Here's a quick question. Are we going to get exiled for killing a Stormlord or because it's under your command? Like will you tell the others that this was on you or what the what? You won't get exiled if you're not caught. Any of the other Stormlords know what you intend?
01:05:02
Speaker
They seem to trust you. Um, I'm, I'm wealthy, but I'm not wealthy enough to pay 30,000 gold pieces on a hit job. So, um, yeah. Storm Lord Omerin. You know, I've never really had to budget money until I left Breland with these fellas. So yeah. And I drank those three and miss March. Those numbers are kind of, uh, um, storm Lord Omerin, uh, is also aware of the offer. Now here's the thing.
01:05:30

We know that you're capable. Your fight with the right raven at my estate showed that much. But this conversation, and I'll answer any questions you have, this conversation will be the last time that I speak to you about this job. Unless we are in this room after it's complete. Lady Omeran will not speak to you about this job. Because if it's discovered, whether you succeed or fail, that we were responsible for it,

We won't get exiled, but we'll have a lot of bad things coming our way. Whereas worst case scenario for you all, you have to leave Stormreach, which we enjoy having you here, but we're afraid that one of our Stormlords has been compromised and he has to be eliminated. And his cousin, Merrick's a good person. Like you said, he killed a dragon, so he'd make a fine Stormlord. I met Merrick. He told me it was a wormling. That's ridiculous.

Well, yeah, I say we do this thing dangerous. Can I look at it and find out whether this is something that can be that anything can be done to it with it? I try to find out if it's magical in nature. I understand magic pretty well. So look at it and try to understand if it's magical in nature to basically know whether my competencies will be at all relevant in this job. Knowledge Arcana. Yeah.

That's not good at all. What'd you get? Well, it's 11, I think. Okay. 11. I mean, the the rune markings around it are a language that you can't even begin to comprehend. It's been deactivated. So there's not any real magical energy coming off of it. But based on everything that everybody said about this thing thus far, they are clearly magical in nature.

they be reactivated once they are deactivated? If they can, we haven't figured out a way how to do it, fortunately. But in a week, I'm going to be hosting another gala at my estate. Storm Lord Amontu will be there, which means he will not be home. So if you all want to use that opportunity to verify

that one of these obelisks are in his home, that would be a good opportunity. It's half the reason I decided to have the gala, to welcome myself back to Stormreach, whatever. So, and then if you do discover it, how you go about eliminating Stormlord Amantu is up to you. Buya say we do. These don't kill many buya people. Make go crazy.

I don't like this at all and I'm nobody's hired assassin but if you two think it's important then I suppose I'll go along with it.
