Introduction to Solo Episode and Geopolitical Topics

00:01:42
Speaker
Yeah. Hello and welcome to This Week Explained. The familiar voice your hearing signifies this is a solo episode this week as our co-host Tiana is taking a well-deserved break to spend quality time with her family in Oklahoma. Now, not going to bore you with any details to dive into this week's topics.

Deep Dive: Ukraine's Use of Western Weapons

00:02:12
Speaker
Obviously where we do rush Ukraine, we've got Israel, Hamas, but also Hezbollah is ramping up attacks on Israel and that is changing the geopolitical dynamics within the Middle East.
00:02:23
Speaker
We're also going to do an update on the elections in India and some of the ramifications of the results there. And then we'll end it this week with tensions that are escalating on the Korean Peninsula. I know last week we talked about the poop balloons. ah More things happened this week that could change the geopolitical landscape there. So let's get right into the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a recent turn of events, Russia has rebuffed Ukraine's efforts to engage its former Soviet comrades in an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland. Ukraine has been strategically utilizing weapons supplied by Western nations to target locations within Russia for the first time. This is a move that has carried substantial strategic weight for the Ukrainian military.
00:03:11
Speaker
The weapons such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or HIMARS, despite their limited range, have emerged as pivotal tools in disrupting Russian logistics and troop movements. So by focusing on Russian force concentrations, equipment, and supply depots, Ukraine's strategy right now will be to impede Russian offensives and alter this current conflict's trajectory.

Israel-Hamas Ceasefire: Biden's Proposal

00:03:38
Speaker
Now initially, warring countries, western countries, had imposed constraints on their weapons usage, ensuring they were deployed solely against military targets within Ukraine. Those are Russian military targets within Ukraine, but also included places like Crimea, which had been occupied by Russia, and Russia considers Russian land.
00:04:00
Speaker
and also the occupied territories that Russia has recently taken. Now, the apprehension was that strikes beyond the internationally recognized border could potentially escalate the conflict. However, Russia's recent surge in the Kharkiv region and has prompted a shift in the stance. So since early May, Russia has initiated a significant offensive in that region. ah We've talked about this for the last couple of weeks. They've mobilized over 30,000 soldiers And they've ah achieved probably their most substantial territorial gains in over 18 months. Now the the heavy shelling and and attempts to penetrate Ukrainian defenses around Kharkiv have compelled Ukrainian troops to reposition amidst the intense fire. And this development is the reason that Kiev has been able to persuade its allies for the need to target military assets across the border to restrain Russian advances.
00:04:59
Speaker
Now, shifting our focus to the conflict in Gaza.

Hezbollah's New Strategy Against Israel

00:05:03
Speaker
The Biden administration has unveiled a fresh new ceasefire proposal aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing hostilities within a timeframe of six weeks. Yet, the road to securing approval for this proposal is riddled with complex complexities. The reluctance of both Israeli and Hamas factions to back the ceasefire stems from their doubts regarding the advantages it would offer to each of their respective sides. Israel's undeniable military might grants it a significant strategic advantage, enabling the country to sustain the conflict for an extended duration. And this robust position has sparked criticism within Israeli circles about the necessity of embracing the proposed ceasefire terms. Now conversely, Hamas is treading carefully, apprehensive of the potential repercussions of releasing hostages without a firmly established permanent ceasefire. The fear within Hamas is that
00:05:58
Speaker
Such a move could weaken their bargaining power and pose a direct threat to key figures within the terror group. Its internal discord and reservations, both within the Israeli and Hamas camps, presents substantial obstacles to the prompt approval of the ceasefire agreement. they That's why, as of today, we have not seen the ceasefire be agreed to. And and that's both on Israel and Hamas as neither is willing to cede any flexibility or or leverage within this ceasefire negotiation. Now moving on to our next topic, the Iranian-backed proxy group Hezbollah has been recalibrating its strategy in the enduring conflict with Israel. The group, once known for its barrage of unguided rockets, has now shifted its focus towards a more precise and potentially devastating target.
00:06:51
Speaker
That target is Israel's Iron Dome air defense systems. Now, a recent video released by Hezbollah showcased a drone guided artillery strike on an Iron Dome battery. This footage not only emphasizes the strategic pivot, but also sends a chilling message about the potential vulnerabilities of Israel's defense infrastructure. The destruction of an Iron Dome battery could leave northern Israel exposed to further attacks stressing the fragility of the nation's protective shield. Now, you don't know what the Iron Dome is. ah The Iron Dome is a marvel of me and modern defense technology. It was engineered to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells crossing the border into Israel, and each battery comes with a hefty price tag. They're about $50 million dollars per battery, with interceptor missiles costing between $40,000 and $100,000 piece. Now, despite the steep costs,
00:07:48
Speaker
the system has proven its worth with a success rate exceeding that of 99%. And we saw that happen in real time when Iran launched that barrage of attacks into Israel and 99% of what Iran sent into Israel was ah dealt with. It did not cross the border into Israel. So The Iron Dome, very important to to is so Israel for its safety and security. The IDF um needs the Iron Dome to be working to protect the people there.
00:08:25
Speaker
now how hezbollah and their adoption of these drone-guided artillery ah fire mechanisms, it it signals a shift in modern military tactics. This approach mirrors strategies adopted by the US, Ukraine, and Russian forces, reflecting a broad trend in the evolution of warfare. As development has triggered a potential strategic shift within Israel, the nation is now considering diverting its focus from Gaza to Lebanon, reallocating resources and adjusting defense strategies to counter Hezbollah's new threats. This shift could have far-reaching geopolitical implications. we will continue to update you on

Impact of Modi's Re-Election on India

this

because it does have the potential to escalate regional tensions and reshape the dynamics of the conflict in the Middle East. Now, as we continue to monitor this situation, it is clear that the chessboard of Middle Eastern geopolitics is in flux. And every move carries the potential to dramatically alter the balance of power in that region. But, let's move to India, who had recent elections which resulted in Prime Minister Narendra Modi getting his third term in office. He won that term with his BJP-led National Democratic Alliance retaining a majority in the lower house of India's bicameral parliament.
00:09:48
Speaker
Albeit, they did this with a reduced margin. This outcome will have far-reaching effects on Indian foreign policy over the next few years. Under Modi's leadership, India has boosted its military capabilities, solidifying its position as a potential regional superpower. However, India's relationship with China remains a complex issue. While India has sought stronger diplomatic and economic ties with the United States and other Western countries, it has been very wary of China's increasing assertiveness. Despite the brewing tensions, India and China continue to engage in collaborations through forums like BRICS and BRICS currency.
00:10:29
Speaker
and the shanghai corporation or the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the SCO. India's foreign policy is guided by its long-standing commitment to maintaining strategic autonomy. This approach has mandated that India avoids becoming aligned with any specific global power bloc and refrains from joining any mutual defense pact. The recent election results indicate that India continues to take a balanced approach to its foreign policy. These results, as I've said, could have significant implications and one of those is with the country of Taiwan. So, if a scenario arises,

North Korea's Military Pact Suspension with South Korea

where China invades Taiwan, and that is highly likely where we have expressed within the last three years it is probable that China invades Taiwan. India would need to navigate its close economic ties with China, its strategic partnerships with Western allies, and its commitment to global democratic values. India's foreign policy has remained cautious regarding the Taiwan issue, intending not to provoke China while maintaining its democratic credentials with Western Europe and the United States. and The Indian election results will likely shape the country's foreign policy direction for the coming years, particularly
00:11:47
Speaker
with reference to China and the prickly Taiwan situation. As Modi's government looks to balance its larger strategic interests with its commitment to democratic ideals, we will be on the lookout for how this affects the population within India as well as the ah the continent of Asia as a whole. so Time to ship gears one last time. We're going to go to the Korean Peninsula. Tensions have escalated with North Korea's announcement of the suspension of a military pact with South Korea coupled with the reinforcement of its armed forces and weaponry along that border. This decision comes in the wake of Seoul's decision to suspend a portion of the 2018 military accord following North Korea's launch of a spy satellite. So in response, North Korea's defense ministry
00:12:35
Speaker
affirmed its plans to reinstate all military measures previously halted under the agreement. and On the other hand, South Korea has taken protective measures by stepping up surveillance along the heavily fortified border. The U.S. Department of State has commended South Korea's response as prudent and restrained given North Korea's defiance of the accord. This back-and-forth escalation underscores the delicate and precarious nature of inter-Korean relations highlights the broader geopolitical ramifications within the region. It is something that we all need to be closely monitoring as the Indo-Pacific becomes a hotbed of activity. The unfolding developments on the Korean Peninsula serve as a stark reminder of the complexities and uncertainties that characterize this long-standing conflict, and any long-standing conflict for that matter.
00:13:26
Speaker
The need for strategic maneuvering and diplomatic finesse is more crucial than ever as both North and South Korea navigate the delicate balance of power in the region. We
